Jessica Moss — Galaxy Heart (Constellation)

If Montreal’s Jessica Moss didn’t tell the listener that her new album Galaxy Heart and 2021’s excellent Phosphenes (reviewed at Dusted here) make up a single body of work, on first listen the connection might not be apparent. Although both are largely Moss writing and working by herself (“Recorded alone in the jam space, produced alone in bed”), the wordless Phosphenes features the violinist’s more post-classical, composed side, forming something between a post-rock epic and a violin suite. Moss’s violin and compositional sense are all over Galaxy Heart just as strongly, but in a much more free, exploratory way. The result is no less beautiful, but it is a thrilling reminder that beauty comes in myriad forms.

The first big change is that as the work flowed out of Moss, she became determined to not limit the intensely creative period she was having by trying to fit it into forms or sounds she was already comfortable with. Violin is certainly the instrument she’s most known for, in any number of bands (and its central presence here is indelible enough you can understand why), but here there’s also striking, semi-improv guitar, organ, voice, and plenty of less traceable elements. Galaxy Heart is identifiably from the same artistic voice as Moss’s other recent work, but with a deeply expanded vocabulary.  

The few guests who (remotely) join Moss here provide some of the most vivid moments of contrast. Her Silver Mt. Zion/Black Ox Orkestar bandmate Thierry Amar plays bass on four songs and two of those four also feature the elementally powerful drummer Jim White (Dirty Three, Xylouris White, et al). Together (but apart) on “Uncanny Being (Violin Study #2)” the trio thrashes and flexes, wrenching strange new shapes out of their interplay. And on “Is There Room for All of It” they summon a kind of roiling hush, just as searching as Moss’s vocals. Their shared dynamic is successful enough that a full trio album would be very welcome, but the rest of Galaxy Heart amply demonstrates that they’re just adding on to what’s already wonderful about Moss solo. Whether it’s the opening violin tangle of “Resistance Creature,” the intensely foreboding “This Continuous Spectrum” (which suggests a duet for steam press and electric guitar at times) or the extended, ecstatic drone of the closing “Opened Ending,” this is an LP with a restless range and sonic density that belies the stereotypes that tend to go along with the idea of a home-made pandemic record.  

Because that, of course, is the context that unites Galaxy Heart and its predecessor, that makes them one body of work. The beauty in both records is inseparable from the emotional turmoil they reflect or channel, the anguish, resolve, hope, sorrow, and conviction coursing through Moss’s music. Both due to the more formal-feeling structure of Phosphenes and the way Galaxy Heart foregrounds Moss’s literal voice for the first time, there’s something intimate and intense about the new record that feels like an artist suddenly realizing that her palette is even broader and more all-encompassing than she realized. Phosphenes is a gorgeous example of what we knew Moss was great at; Galaxy Heart suggests she can do just about anything.

The entity that had been summoned practically growled, a cloak like swirling galaxies- or was it swirling galaxies molded into a cloak- shimmering around their form. One pair of arms crossed over a chest where a star pulsed with the heartbeat of universes, alive yet dying as lazarus green eyes glowered down at the league and bats alike. 

“You know you could, fucking call, right?” they whined, aura of terror suddenly broken, unnatural fear torn away and leaving all of them wrong-footed and confused.

Well, apparently all of them except for Ras, who had an honest to fuck grin on his face, one that looks almost carefree, if a little feral. Nope. No thanks. Not this timeline-

“But phones didn’t exist last we spoke, ya ‘amar.”

Liviana Vlahos, The Queen (she/her)- The queen of Aquarii and all Mitans, she is beloved by all her people for defeating the tyrant who ruled before her. She was kind enough to lend her hand in your time of need, but it's hard to tell if she genuinely cares for you. If you don't prove to be helpful, she may just throw you into the fray.

Estelle Alinac, The Chief (she/her)- The chief of the Justice Association of Aquarii, Estelle is known to be a cold and intimidating woman. She doesn't like you, or humans, and makes that abundantly clear every time you talk to her.

Amare Mailon, The Recruit (he/him)- A new member of the Justice Association of Aquarii, Amare can appear quite naive and unserious. With others, he's sarcastic and witty, but with you, he's nervous and paranoid. Being a member of the JAA, anyone would assume he's just worried about something happening to you. But you know from the way his eyes flick to your arms and legs that the fear runs deeper. You can't tell which matters more to him; stopping a war, or preventing humans from finding Aquarii. Ellery Torres, The Doctor (he/him)- Liviana's personal doctor and the most renowned doctor in the galaxy, Ellery appears as someone you can trust. He can make you feel at ease with his playful humor and light-hearted personality. He has sworn to the queen that he will do everything in his power to keep you alive and healthy. He doesn't appear threatening, but who can you trust in this unknown galaxy?

Vega Ramos, The Mastermind (they/them)- Not much is known about the one who lives in the apartment on Fiery Pass, but it's kind of weird how they never turn their purple lights out...

Queer Book Recs for Speak Your Language Day!

Once a year on Tumblr on May 7th, the account @spyld organizes Speak Your Language Day, a day to encourage people on such an English-centric platform to speak their native languages instead. Duck Prints Press works with creators from over the world, many of whom speak languages other than English as their native tongues (French and German are most common among our folks, but they’re far from the only mother tongues) and so we wanted to join in the celebration for the day by highlighting some of our favorite queer works originally published in languages other than English. I just love when people complain about Erda they say it's a "woman moment" when she sent her children away, or complain how she and Amar took Neoth's accomplishments from him and ruin the lore, or how it's "sjw propaganda" or forcing strong females characters or how she's a Mary sue or creator pet or how "based" it was for Erebus to kill her. just love it 🙃🙃🙃🙃

I hope after this there is a story where Neoth just gets beaten up by the whole galaxy while Amar and Erda are chilling.

I frankly find her a decent character by lore standpoint (scattering her children were they couldn't be found in the warp is a messy situation to think about with the consequences it had on them but it's not the worst thing a person has done in 40k) but godamn her haters are annoying.

From Clay To Brick: Day Trip

Here's a vignette of an original fiction idea I've had in the works for a bit. It quite literally just got done, and I thought it'd be a good Boxing Day present to the lot of you! There's three thousand, eighty five (3,085) words to this thing!

The late summer day dawns at about six AM. Amari, the youngest of those in the house, wakes up shortly after in accordance with her school schedule. Now awake, Amari rises from the air mattress that Umol and Atticus had set up last night, taps her pants’ side pocket to confirm that she has her phone, and begins to walk around her hosts’ home.

Amari walks from the living room towards the hallway then stops to check the time on her phone.

The phone’s clock reads six thirteen AM in pastel pink against the purple galaxy lock screen that Amari picked out.

Barely a moment passes as Amari reflexively locks the screen, sets the phone back into the pocket, and turns into the hallway before peeking her head into Umol’s doorless room. Besides noticing all of the crafting supplies and small animal plushies strewn about, she finds Umol shirtless and passed out face down on top of a large seal-shaped beanbag.

Now curious about what else is in Umol’s room, Amari carefully steps in to investigate what plushes she can recognize before something catches her eye.

She turns her head towards what caught her attention, and sees a circular golden emblem nailed to the wall opposite from where she entered. The emblem resembles a compass, and Amari hangs on the thought of what it means long enough that she loses track of where she’s stepping and steps on a rubber discount rat toy.

Amari’s second long shriek alerts Umol, and four tendrils erupt from his back at the noise.

The child stumbles to the floor at the sight of Umol’s inhuman tendrils.

Amari’s thud then makes Umol shoot up from his beanbag seal. “Gah!”

Umol looks towards the source of the noise with his golden, pupil-less eyes and sees a concerned Amari on the floor near the door.

Umol releases a sigh of relief. “Oh gods, it's only you…”

“What’s with the back tentacles?!” Amari barks.

Those ‘back tentacles’ recede into Umol’s back as he answers. “Oh, those are just my extra hands, Amari! They come out when they think they’re needed…”

Amari sighs and steadily gets to her feet. Umol quietly watches, allowing Amari to get an eyeful of Umol’s pupil-less, golden eyes forgetting to blink for a moment.

Amari softly sets her hand on her forehead as she begins to speak. “I get that you’re a god or whatever, but I still need time to get used to your type of quirky!”

Umol, still watching Amari’s face and thinking she has more to say, remains quiet.

Amari rolls her eyes. “You forget to blink a lot.”

Now aware, Umol blinks twice. “Oh.” Despite his lack of facial features, the area where his cheeks would be blush into a light terracotta color in contrast to his usual sandy tones. “I need to remember to do that, hehe…” Umol adds, before blinking twice more.

“Well uh…” Amari interjects. “What’s on the docket today, mister god guy?”

One of Umol’s extra hands emerges and snakes across the hallway as Umol slowly steps past Amari. Away from Amari’s awareness, the end of Umol’s extra hand forms into an extra eye to peek through Atta’s partially open bedroom door. Amari watches the god carefully enough that she sees his face turn red less than covertly.

Umol clears his throat. “Well, Xavier and Atta aren’t in a place to be talked to…”

The investigative extra hand, having seen enough for Umol’s sake, snakes back into Umol’s backside from the hallway.

“What do ya mean?” Amari says as she tilts her head.

Despite clearly knowing what those two did last night, Umol opts to side step saying what exactly they did.

“They are asleep, we shouldn’t bother them.” Umol says.

Amari nods. “Okay… What do we do instead?”

Umol ponders this for a moment. “... Would you like to take a day trip?”

Amari raises an eyebrow in response. “Where to?”

“Well, we are very close to downtown, and I haven’t walked through there in…”

Umol begins counting on his hands, and his extra hands come out as he runs out of fingers on his usual hands. The god pauses as he finishes tallying, and his extra hands recede back into his backside.

“... About fifteen years.” Umol adds.

Amari chuckles for a moment. “No biggie, I’ve got a phone with the Navi G app!”

“Ah, right. Atticus uses the same thing to get around…”

“I guess it’s settled then, we’re gonna go to downtown Sleezington!” Amari exclaims.

Umol starts to exit his room when Amari zips in front of him with a finger pointed at his chest.

“Remember your shirt, ya doof!” Amari barks. “And also the rest of your going out gear…” Amari adds in a more mild tone.

Umol laughs. “Fair enough.”

Amari smiles and walks out of Umol’s room to grab her going out gear, including her decorated window bag and reusable water bottle. After putting on his favorite handcrafted hoodie, Umol walks out of his room to meet Amari at the front door, ready to unlock it and step out into their suburban nook of Sleezington.

Amari pulls out her phone and boots up the navigator app. “Apparently downtown is a ten minute walk from ‘ere…”

“Is that too long?” Umol asks.

“Naw, it isn’t.” Amari confirms. “I’ll turn on the route for us both, just follow me.”

Umol nods. Amari sees his gesture, starts the route, and begins walking. Umol follows close behind her at a similar pace.

Ten minutes later, Umol and Amari are walking down a street in downtown to a metallic human statue standing atop a stone base. Despite the heavy nature of both the statue and its base, the base is chained to the floor.

Amari, who hasn’t looked up from her phone screen for the last four minutes, steps on an uneven patch of concrete and loses balance. Milliseconds before she begins to fall, one of Umol’s extra hands swiftly emerges to catch Amari before reorienting her to be back on her feet.

Umol looks Amari in the eyes with a slightly annoyed expression.

“... Thanks, Umol!” Amari says, adrenaline still pumping.

Umol’s extra hand retreats into his back as he sets one of his usual hands on his forehead. “Fixing your gaze on that phone screen has almost gotten you hurt four times now…”

A notification noise from Amari’s phone goes off. The Navi G app says the route has been completed.

Amari breathes a sigh of relief before she locks the screen and slots her phone into her pocket. “I guess we’re in the heart of downtown now.”

Umol steps forward to get a closer look at the statue. He looks down from the statue and begins to read the plaque attached to the stone base. Amari notices Umol’s shift in attention and also begins to read before a name in the text catches her eye.

“Oh! This is a statue of Arthur Sleezer!” Amari remarks. “... What’s that one’s deal?” Umol asks.

Amari chuckles slightly as she begins to speak. “Mister Sleezer was the founder of this city if my history classes taught me right. It makes sense that a statue of him would be here to honor that I guess.”

Umol blinks twice. “Interesting.” Umol doesn’t waste a moment to scan the surrounding area. “So now that we’re here, what should we do?”

Amari gestures to Umol to wait a moment, pulls out her phone again, and begins typing the phrase “things to do near me” into Navi G’s search bar. The app loads for a moment before showing its results.

Amari’s face lights up with joy upon seeing one of the results. “Yo! Downtown’s got a Scrimblo Builder place?!”

Umol tilts his head. “A what place…???”

Amari explains with stars in her eyes. “A Scrimblo Builder place! You walk in, pick an unfilled scrimblo plush, fill the plush with the material you want, select some accessories, have the adult pay for all that, then go home with your new plush!”

“So a corporate plush store?” Umol asks.

Amari considers for a moment. “... I guess, yeah.”

“I could do that for ya for free.” Umol says plainly. “You and your brother seem to forget I’m a sewer…”

Amari shrugs as she responds. “Welp, that’s a thing to do once we’re back at your place.”

Amari looks back at her phone screen and scrolls down through the results. “Do you eat?”

Umol speaks plainly. “I mean, I can.” 

Amari raises an eyebrow. “But…?”

Umol blinks twice. “I can’t eat with my face. My extra hands do the eating.”

It’s Amari’s turn to blink twice. “No wonder Xavier says you’re scary at meal times…” Amari looks back to her phone and taps on a promising result. “Oh hey! This restaurant has separate rooms for its guests!”

Amari puts her phone in front of Umol’s face so he can look for himself. Umol reads through the details for this place, and softly shrugs.

“Eh, seems good. Let’s go there!” Umol says.

Amari smiles. She boots up the route to Supreme Italiano’s, the restaurant in question, before beginning to follow the route that Navi G set up for them both.

After they get through Supreme Italiano’s front doors, the clerk at the front sees two guests and directs them to a room/table for two. The room isn’t a completely separate unit from the rest of the restaurant, seeing as a pane of glass faces the hallway that leads from the front of the place, but largely undeterred, Umol and Amari begin to mull over the menu(s) after Amari gets her preferred soft drink.

Amari gets to the page in the menu with the text “Build your own!” at the top as a heading and carefully reads.

She looks up from the menu at Umol. “You got any preferences, my man?”

“As much as I think most animals are cute, I enjoy meat.” Umol says.

“... So you’re wanting a meat-za.” Amari says, eyes narrowed.

Two of Umol’s extra hands emerge and shrug behind him as he holds his menu with his usual hands. “Pretty much, Amari.”

Umol’s extra hands recede into his back as the waitress walks into the pseudo-room that he and Amari are in. Amari also takes a moment to look up from her menu to make eye contact with the waitress.

The waitress asks what the two would like to have for their meals, Amari asks for the four meat pizza to share between them, and the waitress nods before taking their menus.

About twelve minutes later, the four meat-za comes out and is set onto Amari and Umol’s table. The waitress notices that Amari’s drink could use a refill as she leaves straight for the soda fountain to attend to that.

Amari looks up from the pizza at Umol. “Welp, here’s the pizza! Ima divy this up…”

Umol and Amari take a closer look at the pizza and both realize that the ‘za came pre-cut into eighths.

Amari takes two slices onto her plate and begins to eat after a swig of her soft drink.

Umol’s extra hands emerge and begin moving four slices of pizza onto his plate. After the pizza slices are moved safely onto the plate, the ends of Umol’s extra hands morph into four small, toothy mouths and begin to messily chew through the ‘za.

Amari, only midway into one pizza slice at this point, watches Umol eat in paralyzed shock and awe for a moment before the waitress walks in with Amari’s refill and not a care in the world.

“Here is a refill, girly-”

The waitress reopens her eyes and sees Umol’s extra hands making quick work of the meat-za she just served. Amari, clearly embarrassed, simply steps towards the waitress and gestures for the glass of soda.

The waitress gives Amari a questioning look as Umol’s extra hands continue their consumption.

Amari shrugs. “Long story, I’m still getting used to him too…!” Amari whispers.

The waitress lets Amari’s statement sink in before nodding and handing the glass of soda to the girl. The waitress then quickly leaves the room.

After both Amari and Umol finish their halves of the pizza and wipe their mouths, Umol and Amari get up, proceed to the front desk to pay for their meal. After paying with the debit card of unknown origin that Amari fished out of her bag, Umol takes the receipt and begins to follow Amari out the front doors of Supreme Italiano’s. Umol catches a glimpse of the waitress that served them whispering to the clerk at the front desk. That clerk’s expression of surprise radiates pure comedy gold to Umol, who knows exactly what that clerk heard.

Amari leads Umol to a bench barely half a block away from the Italian place they just ate at before taking a seat.

Umol, raises an eyebrow in Amari’s direction. “What’s on your mind, kiddo?”

“... I’m tired.”

“Already?” Umol blinks twice. “Usually Atta’s tired after the third stop we make…”

Amari looks Umol in the eyes. “Well, I’m not Atta! But I don’t know if you’d wanna carry me back to your place…”

Umol speaks as plainly as he can. “I have no problems carrying you home.”

Amari perks up. “Wait, really?!”

Umol nods. “I’ll also mention that I could try out this one thing again…”

“Oh?”

Umol twirls his right hand as he explains. “The last time I was here, I found an alternate way to move in the city that didn’t involve walking.” Umol sets the recently twirling hand back at his side as he continues. “Though I will ask if you’re comfortable with a, um… Roller-coaster like feeling first.”

Amari’s eyes shine as she smiles. “How can I say no to that?! I LOVE roller-coasters!”

“Alrighty then, it’s settled. I’ll explain the safety stuff as I ready up…”

A few minutes of orientation and explanation later, Amari is ready with Umol lagging slightly behind. Umol has wrapped one set of his extra hands securely around Amari to keep her close to his chest. Amari’s window backpack is also ready to go, with it tucked between Amari’s back and Umol’s chest. Umol begins to stretch to prepare himself.

After Umol’s stretches conclude, Umo clears his throat. “You ready, Amari?”

“Hell yeah…!”

Umol senses a question from her uneven delivery. “You wanna ask something?”

“... Can I record this?” She says, meekly pulling out her phone.

Umol pauses to blink twice. “You know what, I might as well do that for ya…”

Umol offers one of his usual hands to hold the phone.

Amari unlocks the screen and hands it his way. “You know how to work this, right?”

Umol flips over to the camera app and sets it to video near instantly. “Yep, I do.”

Umol taps the recording button to start the video.

“Hey!” Amari says, jokingly annoyed.

Umol forms his hand around the phone so that it keeps recording without fear of it slipping away and points the camera towards him and Amari.

“Hey internet, or whoever is watching I guess!” Umol says.

Amari pokes her head further into the view of the camera. “Yeah! We’re aboutta do something fun!”

Umol and Amari speak nearly in unison as Umol throws up a peace sign with his other usual hand. “So let’s do this!”

Umol repositions the camera as he winds up to launch, then launches. Umol and Amari go sailing through the air of downtown Sleezington, with Umol’s other two extra hands acting as the main means of keeping them aloft as they seamlessly grab and stick to the tall buildings of downtown. The phone continues recording as Umol and Amari whiz through the city at about the speed of a falcon’s flight, with the occasional pedestrian below looking up to see the both of them jetting by. All while Umol’s extra hands instinctively dodge around any birds flying at their altitude to avoid high-speed collisions and the possible damage.

Within a few minutes of starting this joy ride, Amari and Umol have already reached the edge of downtown, and to be extra showy to the camera, Umol extends the arm holding Amari’s phone forward as they leave downtown’s borders. Sure that things are in view of the camera’s eye, Umol then coordinates his extra hands to simultaneously grab onto the two last nearby buildings, spring upward with a slight twirl, then as Umol begins to feel the gravity take hold, he reforms his hands into bat-like wings before beginning to glide back down to Earth.

Umol, still hanging onto Amari as tight as he can, softly touches down in front of his and Atta’s apartment unit as his extra hands turned wings revert to their rope-like shape and recede into his back.

As soon as Umol comes to a full stop, the set of extra hands that had been holding Amari quite tightly up to this point release the girl and also return to being inside Umol’s backside.

With the camera still recording, Umol looks straight into Amari’s phone camera. “That’s how you get through downtown.” Umol makes another peace sign. “Peace!”

Umol taps the end recording button on Amari’s phone, frees the phone from the cage his hand formed around it, and hands the phone back to Amari, who has already turned to face him.

Umol puts on the most smug expression he can muster. “How’d you like that, Amari?”

Amari can barely contain her excitement. “THAT WAS SO AWESOME!” Amari settles enough that she can speak at a normal volume. “... Could we do that again sometime?”

Umol sets his hands in his hoodie’s front pocket as she shrugs. “Eh, we could. For now, you want to start on making a handmade plush like I mentioned earlier?”

Amari answers with gusto. “Sure!”

Umol chuckles slightly as he pulls out his apartment key. “Gotcha. Let’s go in.”

The door unlocks like a charm and both of them walk into Umol’s apartment. As they enter, the now awakened Xavier and Atta are quietly eating some budget ramen at the dining room table.

Atta notices Umol and Amari’s entrance first, and Xavier’s eyes follow Atta’s to see them enter a few scant seconds later. Xavier sees Amari’s extremely windswept buns and drops his fork on the table. “Where the hell were you two today?!” Xavier says.

Amari and Umol both chuckle before Umol begins to explain. Xavier picks up his fork as Atticus primes himself to listen to Umol’s summary of today…

REWATCH: (Udite, udite, io che aborro i rewatch, ne ho fatto uno) Alice in Borderland (season 1)

1) Miglior drama: Go Ahead

Quest’anno non è stato difficile… di più! Alla fine di quest’anno, ho selezionato quelle che per me erano 4 eccellenze: Reset, Tomorrow, Love Like the Galaxy e Go Ahead.E alla fine, come potete vedere, il vincitore è stato… Go Ahead. Ho adorato questo drama. Me l'hanno consigliato ed è stato amore. Go Ahead è un drama familiare, che tratta di una famiglia allargata nel vero senso della parola. Parla di due padri che, rimasti senza moglie (chi per un motivo, chi per un altro), si rimboccano le maniche per crescere i nostri tre protagonisti come una grande unica famiglia, anche se entrambi hanno solo un figlio a testa biologicamente parlando. E poi questo drama parla del rapporto strettissimo di questi tre fratelli che tanto fratelli non sono, della loro separazione, della loro riunione, della loro crescita e maturità. Questo drama mi ha scaldato il cuore con le sue vicende, per i personaggi che non puoi fare a meno di amare (no, madre del fratello maggiore, tu non fai parte di questa categoria). Le vicende sono realistiche e trattate benissimo, il drama non stanca mai nonostante la lunghezza e il fatto di trattare di cose di tutti i giorni. Go Ahead è una piccola perla che vi consiglio un sacco se non l'avete visto.

2) Peggior drama: Game Payabeth

Che disagio. Game Payabeth è un lakorn sulla vendetta. E okay, forse questo già potrebbe spiegare tutto a chi se ne intende di lakorn su questo genere. La verità è che, sotto sotto, io sto ancora cercando un drama simile che sia all'altezza di Kleun Cheewit (che no, non era perfetto, ma mi ha tenuto incollata), ma purtroppo anche questa volta mi è andata male. Molto, molto male. La trama spiccia è la seguente: il protagonista vuole vendicare la sorella suicida, convinto che la responsabilità ricada sul suo ragazzo (ora, sposato forzatamente con un'altra), e quindi decide di rapire la sorella di lui e portarla sulla sua isola privata. Poi, tra ostacoli vari, salterà fuori il vero colpevole del suicidio e nascerà l'"AMORE" (eww). Tra i problemi di questo povero drama, ci sono soprattutto i personaggi. Mi hanno dato il nervoso. Sono tutti idioti. Fanno ragionamenti assurdi, scelte ancora peggio e si rendono conto delle cose con la velocità di un bradipo (vedi la famigliola sull'isola del lead, suoi lavoratori, che ci mette non so più quante puntate a rendersi conto che forse la lead era lì contro la sua volontà. Era così difficile da capire... <- sarcasmo). Oppure sono insopportabili, vedi la madre della lead che avrebbero fatto meglio a rinchiudere da qualche parte. O la cattiva della storia che era totalmente incapace di fingere di essere una persona decente (anche solo per fare scena e ottenere quello che voleva). La coppia secondaria (l'ex della sorella morta e l'amica del lead) meritava molto di più di essere la coppia protagonista perché almeno aveva un rapporto decente (cioè... bugie a parte di lei perché stava indagando sotto copertura), soprattutto se confrontato con quello dei protagonisti (non fatemi ricordare). Detta in parole povere: STATE. ALLA. LARGA.

3) Miglior attore e miglior attrice: Casa di carta Corea (lui), Juvenile Justice/Under The Queen's Umbrella (lei)

Miglior attore: Park Hae Soo A me Park Hae Soo piace proprio tanto. E' il terzo drama che vedo con lui come protagonista (o almeno tra i ruoli principali) e sono sempre performance fantastiche. L'ho scoperto con Squid Game e nonostante Prison Playbook l'abbia visto cronologicamente solo un mese dopo ci ho messo un sacco a riconoscerlo perché il ruolo era totalmente diverso e come tale era interpretato. Quest'anno di nuovo, l'ho visto con un ruolo diverso dai precedenti, come Berlino in La Casa di Carta: Corea (mi attirerò degli insulti, ma trovo il remake superiore all'originale), sia prima sia seconda parte, e anche in questo caso ho apprezzato moltissimo la sua interpretazione.

Miglior attrice: Kim Hye Soo Ho visto due drama con Kim Hye Soo quest'anno. Il primo, Juvenile Justice, un drama legal in cui interpreta una giudice tutta d'un pezzo, mentre in Under The Queen's Umbrella una regina intelligente che cerca di proteggere i suoi figli. Ottimi ruoli entrambi interpretati alla perfezione, in particolare il secondo, che essendo meno spinoso, era più facilmente apprezzabile.

(Mi fa ridere che ho scelti due attori con nomi propri simili).

4) Il drama che hai fatto terribilmente fatica a finire: Check Out e Unforgotten Night.

Su più di 50 drama, anche se ci sono parecchie eccellenze, salta sempre fuori anche la ciofeca di turno. E’ stata dura scegliere quale "premiare", ma alla fine ho scelto due titoli (per entrambi è stata dura arrivare alla fine). Mi è spiaciuto dover indicare 2 BL, ma quest’anno in particolare ne ho visti parecchi, e non tutti si sono rivelati una sorpresa (o comunque una visione decente). Check Out e Unforgotten Night, in particolare, hanno svolto un lavoro pessimo. So benissimo che non tutti possono avere chissà che budget, ma Unforgotten Night deve averlo sprecato tutto per la tigre, letteralmente l’unica cosa bella da vedere. Il drama è stato noioso, la chimica inesistente, la recitazione pessima e i dialoghi fuori dal mondo. Ricordo ancora con orrore il primo episodio in cui un innocente rubinetto resta aperto per cinque minuti di fila. Per nessuna ragione. Anziché concentrarmi sui dialoghi, imploravo che uno dei due personaggi lo chiudesse. Perché non l’ho mollato? Perché sono idiota.

Check Out… aveva palesemente più soldi, ma era scritto con i piedi. La visual non era male, anche se non mi piaceva nessuno dei due attori. Però su quello ci sarei passata sopra se la trama avesse avuto senso! Dopo un episodio speciale pre-serie decente (anche se un pelo noiosetto), la serie è andata al catafascio. Corna, decisioni insensate, tira e molla, stupidità di gruppo… tutto questo per dodici lunghi episodi. Tra l’altro, erano pure lunghi di per sé, dato che superavano i 60 minuti. Beh, sembravano almeno il doppio. Anche questo seguito on-air, il che rende il continuare un drama più facile, soprattutto se lo vedi a velocità aumentata.

Bonus: Altre cose che sono state un meh e che non vedevo l'ora di concludere? Extra-ordinary You (che prometteva bene, ma era una continua ripetizione della stessa situazione), Cutie Pie e The Eternal Love 3 (evidentemente era meglio fermarsi al 2).

5) Il finale più bello: Under The Queen's Umbrella

Questo drama ha un ottimo finale che chiude tutte le sue storyline e si prende pure la briga di chiudere il cerchio con una scena che fa da rimando al titolo e che coinvolge i due personaggi principali (la regina e suo figlio). E' un finale che ho apprezzato molto. Non è esageratamente eclatante, si limita a chiudere le cose com'è giusto che sia, senza voler per forza scioccare o buttare tutto in tragedia (piuttosto tipico nei drama storici coreani). Anzi, direi anche che è un finale rilassante e che ti lascia soddisfatto della visione.

6) Peggior Villain: Game Payabeth

Un po' mi scoccia doverlo nominare di nuovo, ma è inevitabile, non mi viene in mente un villain peggiore della cognata della lead (nuova moglie di suo fratello). Questa donna è un arrogante che fa di tutto (ma proprio tutto) per cercare di ottenere quello che vuole, ma appena questo succede, non cerca nemmeno di tenerselo.

Non contenta di aver provocato il suicidio della sorella del lead (e di tutte le cose che le sono capitate), riesce a portarsi a letto forzatamente il suo futuro marito (mi pare lo droghi) per farlo diventare tale (perché lo ricatta) e poi si stupisce che lui non la voglia. E' riuscita a sposarsi a forza l'uomo che voleva, quindi ora che potrebbe fare? Comportarsi in maniera decente in modo che lui magari si addolcisca un po' e cerchi di costruire almeno un buon rapporto matrimoniale, magari rispettando pure il fatto che lui sia in lutto? Ovviamente no! Continua a comportarsi malissimo con lui, sperpera una valanga di soldi, fa scenate di gelosia e poi si dà pure al gioco di azzardo (ah, e quasi ammazza il suocero, e sicuramente fa un sacco di altre brutte cose che manco mi ricordo). Va bene essere cattivi, ma almeno siate furbi. A che serve aver mosso mari e monti per ottenere quello che volevate, se non fate almeno uno sforzo per tenervelo?

7) Il finale peggiore: Maid's Revenge

Ho visto questo drama a causa (grazie/per colpa di) dei social. Continuavano a comparirmi video a riguardo e allora ci ho dato un'occhiata. Mi sento un po' in colpa a nominarlo perché è proprio un dramettino trash, composto da 30 episodi di 10 minuti (a volte meno). Gli episodi duravano così poco che non facevi in tempo a premere play che già partivano i titoli di coda (eh sì, perché essendo cinese, non mancavano né l'opening, né l'ending). Però... ha proprio un finale del cavolo.

(SPOILER) Vado un po' a memoria, comunque ricordo che dopo aver atterrato il cattivo, i protagonisti, anziché legarlo, si scambiano parole dolci, permettendo a suddetto personaggio di recuperare un'arma e sparare al lead. Presumibilmente uccidendolo. Perché presumibilmente? Eh sì, perché questo finale va anche a interpretazione. Da quello che ho capito io, il lead è morto. Cinque anni dopo, la lead è diventata governatrice (praticamente seguendo le orme del lead, anche se non si capisce come visto che lei era un'ameba) e si spaccia per sua moglie (non hanno fatto in tempo a sposarsi). Un giorno, la sfortunata vedova, esce in giardino e le si approccia una guardia (o un soldato) interpretato dallo stesso autore del lead, ma con un carattere praticamente opposto, messo apposta per insinuare il dubbio che il lead sia vivo (e magari senza memoria). Io penso solo che sia un sosia e che serva alla lead per ricordare il marito (oltre che flirtare un po' con il bel ragazzo, visto che è vedova, mica morta). Tra l'altro, questo finale incontra il mio disprezzo perché ha punti in comune con quello di Make Your Days Count, che non ho mai superato.

8) Miglior villain: Weak Hero Class 1

La particolarità di questa scelta è che il villain non parte come tale. Facciamo un passo indietro. Weak Hero Class 1 è tratto da un webtoon e questa prima stagione racconta eventi pre-webtoon (che, se ho capito bene, vengono poi raccontati in capitoli futuri come flashback). Narra la storia di un ragazzo delle superiori con voti altissimi che stringe amicizia con due compagni di classe e si ritrova a doversi scontrare insieme a loro contro dei bulli, arrivando a ricorrere alla violenza usando anche il cervello (visto che è alto un metro e un tappo). Chi è il villain in questione? Uno dei suoi due nuovi amici, che lo diventa nel corso della serie, a causa di fraintendimenti e il pessimo rapporto con il padre. Penso sia questo il bello. Nella prima metà della serie, ci si affeziona all'amicizia di questi tre ragazzi, anche se fin dall'inizio lo senti che c'è qualcosa che non va, una sorta di muro tra due di loro e il terzo. Mentre i primi due hanno stretto un'amicizia molto profonda (sì, un po' li shippavo anche), il terzo è sempre stato un passo indietro. Questo problema, a lungo andare, a causa di fattori esterni, si è ingigantito, andando a distruggere l'amicizia fragile che si era creata fra i tre, arrivando a portare il nostro fresco villain a volersi addirittura vendicare dei suoi vecchi amici (di uno dei due, in realtà). E' una storia tragica, ma ho trovato questo passare al lato oscuro di questo personaggio molto interessante e ben costruito.

9) Miglior storia d'amore secondaria: F4 Thailand

Ogni volta che viene fatto un remake su Hana Yori Dango, qualsiasi sia la nazionalità, una delle cose che aspetto sempre è la rappresentazione che daranno alla ship formata dall'amica della lead e da uno degli F4. In questo caso specifico, Kaning e Kavin. Nemmeno questa volta mi hanno delusa, ho apprezzato l'interpretazione che la Thailandia ha dato a questa storia (ed evidentemente non sono l'unica visto che i due attori faranno un nuovo drama insieme l'anno prossimo...), anche se avrei preferito che avessero più spazio, visto che puntualmente, con le serie thailandesi, alla coppia secondaria si danno tipo 30 minuti di orologio.

Bonus: Love in The Air. Questo drama ha le sue lacune e la coppia che secondo me si potrebbe ritenere principale - anche se in un certo senso lo sono entrambe - praticamente non ha una trama, però Sky e Prapai insieme mi hanno colpito un sacco e meritavano una menzione. Mi sono proprio piaciuti.

10) Personaggio maschile preferito: Fall In Love

E come potrebbe essere altrimenti? Tan Xuan Lin è il protagonista indimenticabile per eccellenza. Se una persona giocasse a scacchi contro questo personaggio, non farebbe in tempo a muovere il primo pedone che lui avrebbe già pensato a diecimila modi possibili per farle scacco matto. In Fall in Love l'abbiamo visto mettere in moto un sacco di piani, essere sempre un passo avanti a tutti, con l'unica persona in grado di stargli dietro che è la lead. Tan Xuan Lin ha un sacco di carisma e un cervello fino, sono queste due qualità il suo fascino maggiore, che mi hanno colpito al cuore per 36 episodi. L'ho adorato tantissimo, pure quando a un certo punto si è convinto che il suo piano (che più che un piano era un'azione suicida) finale lo avrebbe portato alla morte e si è fatto prendere dallo sconforto, perché avrebbe abbandonato la lead.

11) Personaggio femminile preferito: Under The Queen's Umbrella

Dopo averla votata come miglior attrice per questa interpretazione, penso sia giusto premiare anche il personaggio in sé, vale a dire la Regina di Under The Queen's Umbrella, drama storico coreano. Ho adorato la forza di questo personaggio, il suo rapporto con i figli, l'energia che ci metteva nel destreggiarsi tra i complotti della Regina Vedova che odiava lei e i principi. Mi è piaciuto come personaggio anche perché atipico di uno storico coreano. Era molto energica, correva di qua e di là per risolvere i vari problemi della corte e dei suoi complotti. Era bello il suo rapporto con i figli, molto profondo, ma allo stesso tempo doveva spesso sgridarli perché erano degli scapestrati. Interessante come sia stato reso anche il suo rapporto con le concubine del re (suo marito) e, soprattutto con i figli di quest'ultime. Credo che una delle mie scene preferite sia il modo in cui sia stata più madre lei in cinque minuti del Principe SimSo che quella vera. Una delle madri migliori dei drama del 2022, l'ho adorata in questo ruolo. Non dimentichiamoci del Re, che nonostante le molte concubine e il fatto che tra loro non ci fosse amore, lui e la Regina si rispettavano l'un l'altra e si volevano anche bene. Quello che voglio dire è che la Regina era consapevole del suo ruolo e di tutti i problemi e preoccupazioni che comporta, ma che sia sempre riuscita a mostrarsene degna senza per forza provare rancore o lagnandosi. Era sempre all'altezza della situazione. E' stato bellissimo seguire il percorso di questa regina per sedici episodi.

12) Un drama in arrivo che non vedi l'ora di vedere: Immortality

Il problema è... che potrebbe non essere nemmeno in arrivo, nel senso che potrebbe non uscire mai. Immortality è tratto da una novel danmei e, in quanto tale, la Cina al momento lo tiene ben sigillato senza farlo uscire. Riuscirò mai a vederlo? Chissà! E' più probabile che legga prima la novel pubblicata in Italia (visto che di recente ne è stato annunciato l'acquisto da parte di una casa editrice).

13) La morte di un personaggio che non hai ancora superato: Alice in Borderland

(SPOILER ANCHE DELLA SECONDA PARTE) Inizialmente avevo pensato di mettere un personaggio che muore nella seconda stagione, ma dato che alla fine non è che me ne sia fregato più di tanto (senza offesa, Tatta), ho pensato di rimembrare una morte della prima stagione (che ho rewatchato) che invece è veramente impossibile da superare. Tutt'al più che il drama ci tiene un sacco a farti continuare a soffrire anche nella seconda stagione proponendo nuove scene del personaggio (e addirittura una nuova versione della sua morte). Di chi sto parlando? Ma ovviamente di Karube, l'amico biondo di Arisu (sì, mi dispiace anche per Chota, ma per Karube cento volte di più). Anche se si è vista per un battito di ciglia, l'amicizia a tre di Arisu, Karube e Chota mi ha conquistata, quindi vedere il nostro lead perdere entrambi i suoi amici in un colpo solo ha fatto veramente male. Inoltre, Karube era un personaggio che mi sarebbe piaciuto vedere esplorato di più, i soli flashback misti a illusioni di Arisu non mi sono mai bastati. Il finale di serie che spiega tutta la verità dietro quello che hanno vissuto i personaggi (beh, più o meno, il manga lo spiega meglio), non ha fatto altro che rendere ancora più reale e amara questa morte.

14) Il personaggio più amato: La Casa di Carta Corea

Ho pensato di mettere il lead di Fall in Love, ma non volevo ripetermi, quindi ho pensato di puntare su altro, cioè Tokyo di La Casa di Carta. La cosa buffa è che io ho odiato ogni minuto in cui è comparsa della Tokyo della versione spagnala di La Casa di Carta. Era insopportabile. Ma qui, nella versione coreana, in particolare nella seconda parte, dove secondo me spicca anche di più, ogni tre per due dicevo: Tokyo, hai il mio rispetto. E ce l'aveva sul serio. La Tokyo coreana era veramente forte, non stava sempre a piangersi addosso o fare scelte deficienti (che nella maggior parte dei casi coinvolgevano Rio, un altro idiota). Gli autori coreani hanno messo mano a questo personaggio e ne hanno tirato fuori qualcosa di bello. Intanto, già il suo background è molto più interessante (vedi il fatto che proviene dalla Corea del Nord), ma anche il cancellare con l'accetta la sua relazione con Rio è stata un'ottima scelta (c'è lo slow burn e c'è il feeling, ma nessuno dei due arriva a darti sui nervi e lei soprattutto mantiene intatti i suoi neuroni).

15) Il miglior momento WTF: Alice in Borderland 2

A me Alice in Borderland è piaciuto un sacco, sia la prima sia la seconda stagione. Mi piacciono i personaggi, mi sono piaciuti i giochi (chi più, chi meno) e mi va anche bene come sia andata a finire, lo trovo assolutamente sensato. Però... (SPOILER) mi fa ridere come nella prima stagione cadevano come mosche, di come Tatta sia morto dissanguato in 3 minuti, però quando si è trattato di scontrarsi con il Re di Picche i personaggi principali siano diventati praticamente immortali. Li volevo morti? No, assolutamente no, però... Aguni, come diavolo fai a essere ancora vivo? Sei fatto di acciaio? E Niragi? Si era ustionato pesantemente, continuava a tossire sangue, gli hanno sparato di nuovo (con un fucile, se ricordo bene) e si è preso anche parecchi pugni in faccia (da Arisu, okay, ma non erano certo buffetti). Come cavolo fa a essere ancora vivo? E mi limito a questi due, perché in linea generale dovrei nominare almeno tutti quelli che si sono scontrati con il Re di Picche. Re di Picche compreso, un altro fatto di acciaio come Aguni che con tutti i colpi che si è preso dovrebbe essere morto qualcosa come mille volte.

16) Peggiore attore e attrice: War of Y (lui), Game Payabeth (lei)

War of Y, visto che è un drama formato da 4 storie diverse e, di conseguenza, una multitudine di personaggi, aveva una recitazione altalenante. C'erano attori decisamente in parte, ma altri decisamente di meno. Uno di quelli di cui proprio non ho apprezzato l'interpretazione è senz'altro Milk (Peek nella serie), che era al suo primo ruolo e si vedeva. Per quanto riguarda l'attrice peggiore, mi tocca chiamare di nuovo in causa Game Payabeth e, più precisamente, l'attrice che interpreta Ket (Omyim), cioè la nuova moglie del fratello della lead e villain della storia. Il suo personaggio era terribile, ma era anche interpretato male e sopra le righe, il che non ha fatto altro che peggiorare le cose.

17) La singola canzone più bella: KinnPorsche

Ho seguito KinnPorsche on-air, in sub eng, di settimana in settimana, e ricordo quanto mi piacesse moltissimo l'opening che mi dava la carica e mi galvanizzava mentre l'episodio cominciava.

18) Miglior momento comico: Graceful Family

Penso che sia indimenticabile nella sua comica follia la scena in cui viene fatto un super mega funerale per il pesce della famiglia tragicamente morto (LOL) e la lead si presenta vestita di rosso per gettare un fiore anche lei in onore del pesce e dirgli addio. Da sganasciarsi.

19) Ora come ora... di quale drama faresti un rewatch?: La Casa di Carta Corea

Lo dico sempre, io non rewatcho, la prima stagione di Alice In Borderland è stata decisamente un'eccezione, però ammetto che in questi giorni, dopo aver visto la seconda parte della versione coreana di La Casa di Carta, mi è venuta voglia di rivederlo. E' stata una bella visione e mi sono divertita. Tra l'altro, anche se so di essere una mosca bianca, io l'ho decisamente preferito alla versione originale spagnola - di cui ho visto solo la prima stagione... e mi è bastato (anche perché praticamente hanno tolto tutti gli elementi che non sopportavo).

20) La storia d'amore più bella: You Are My Glory

Questa domanda ogni anno è un tormento perché mi creo infinite ship, comunque... questa volta voglio dare lo scettro a Yu Tu e Qiao Jing Jing di Your Are My Glory. Non sono una coppia tormentata, né predestinata e nemmeno una power couple (ish), quello che mi è piaciuto è il fatto che abbiano una storia d'amore semplice rappresentata in maniera reale. Yu Tu e Qiao Jing Jing sono due ex compagni di scuola, lei si era dichiarata e lui l'aveva rifiutata. Dieci anni dopo si rivedono, passano del tempo insieme perché lei lo assume per un breve periodo e i sentimenti nascono di nuovo e si approfondiscono. Quando dopo qualche piccolo conflitto (perché sto pur sempre guardando un drama e non un documentario) si mettono insieme, anche il loro stare insieme è quello di una coppia normale, sia intimamente sia non. Quindi abbiamo abbracci, baci, prese in giro, piccoli battibecchi, a volte distacchi per questioni lavorative di entrambi affrontati da persone adulte mature... e nel mentre la storia d'amore cresce con loro, passando di fase in fase, mentre il tempo trascorre come è giusto che sia (tranquilli, non arriviamo a vederli in pensione XD). You Are My Glory non è un drama perfetto (tutto il lavoro di lui è, purtroppo, una noia mortale, e il drama ci ha perso su troppo tempo), e se lo chiedete a me, Mydramalist ha un po' sovrastimato il suo valore, ma è un bel drama, con una delle coppie meglio rappresentate che abbia mai visto (grande chimica di coppia anche per i due attori).

21) Una serie che merita più riconoscenza: Under The Queen's Umbrella

Ho pensato di mettere questo drama perché effettivamente a me non ispirava e non pensavo l'avrei visto. Anche in questo caso, sono stati complici i social. Ho visto qualche scena che ha attirato la mia attenzione e ho iniziato a vederlo. E mi è piaciuto moltissimo, quindi mi sento di consigliarlo e di ritenere che meriti di essere conosciuto maggiormente. Essendo un drama coreano storico che ha anche una componente amorosa molto ridotta passa un po' in sordina, ma in realtà merita di essere recuperato.

22) Miglior colpo di scena: Mezzanotte a Istanbul

Decisamente Mezzanotte a Istanbul fa delle scelte sconvolgenti, in particolare verso la fine.

(SPOILER) Per esempio, non mi sarei mai aspettata che Esra, la nostra protagonista, non fosse affatto nata negli anni '90, ma in un'epoca passata e che si sia ritrovata nel presente da neonata, dopo aver viaggiato nel tempo, finendo quindi a essere cresciuta in un orfanotrofio. Tra l'altro, questa è anche la trama per cui vorrei vedere la seconda stagione.

23) La storia d'amore peggiore: Choosing Spouse By Lottery

Ovviamente... la seconda coppia, composta da Infermierina e Rambo (di lei non ho imparato il nome, mentre quello di lui era obiettivamente facile da ricordare). Hanno una storia che dire scritta con i piedi è essere gentili. Il drama parte da una base in cui, per una nuova leggere, la gente è costretta a fare degli incontri pre-matrimoniali ed è possibile rifiutare un possibile partner solo due volte, alla terza sei obbligato ad accettare. Finite le chance, o ti sposi l'ultimo che ti capita, oppure vieni arruolato nell'esercito per due anni. (SPOILER) Infermierina e Rambo si incontrano a causa di questa legge. In tempo zero iniziano a provare qualcosa, copulano e poi lei, dopo circa una settimana, scopre che lui non le ha mai detto di avere un figlio, quindi lo molla. Poco tempo dopo, scopre di essere incinta, ma non gli dice nulla prima di un anno perché evidentemente non sa cosa significhi ipocrisia. A peggiorare le situazione, glielo dice per messaggio di avere avuto un figlio da lui. Lui, contento della cosa (???), corre da lei, le chiede di sposarlo e lei accetta. Così, completamente a caso. Come affossare un bel drama. La coppia principale invece era meravigliosa.

24) La serie che meriterebbe uno spin-off: Alice in Borderland 1 e 2

Penso sarebbe interessante vedere il "dopo" della gente che ha accettato di rimanere a Borderland, tipo i due sopravvissuti al gioco del Fante di Cuori. Oppure seguire le vicende di qualche altro nuovo personaggio che non abbiamo mai visto.

25) Sei nei guai. Chi chiameresti per tirarti fuori dai casini? Reset.

Immagino che dipenda anche dal tipo di guaio, ma sicuramente il poliziotto di Reset sarebbe un'ottima risposta per tutto, essendo il più efficiente di tutti. E poi è assolutamente indimenticabile il fatto che è il tipo di persona che darebbe ascolto anche alla richiesta di aiuto più fasulla perché preferisce correre comunque in aiuto di chi l'ha chiamato, piuttosto che pentirsi dopo di non averlo fatto se il problema fosse reale. E sì, infatti i nostri lead di Reset non sembravano proprio le persone più sincere del mondo (non per colpa loro), ma pure trovandosi davanti allo scenario più assurdo, il nostro poliziotto del cuore ha salvato la situazione. E chi non vorrebbe chiedere aiuto a una persona così affidabile?

26) Miglior scena d'azione: Reset

Penso che il salvataggio del bus sia veramente una scena d'azione incredibile. Tutti i passeggeri del bus che collaborano per impedire alla colpevole di far saltare in aria la bomba, la polizia che intanto cerca di far fermare il bus e poi la bomba che finalmente viene lanciata lontano, dove non può nuocere a nessuno. E' una scena adrenalinica, che fa trattenere il fiato.

27) Il bacio peggiore: My Dear Brothers

Il titolo giusto: i baci peggiori. Perché non è solo un bacio a far schifo in questo drama, ma tutti! I lead si saranno baciati 7-8 volte e ogni bacio era peggiore dell'altro. Uno in particolare, vede i protagonisti labbra contro labbra che si impegnano a stare perfettamente immobili mentre intanto hanno le palpebre sollevate e gli occhi che guardano di qua e di là. In generale, i drama cinesi hanno questo problema di fondo, cioè che vede gli attori costretti a stare come mummie labbra contro labbra, però ultimamente di attori che si salvano e baciano bene ce ne sono anche parecchi, ma non questa volta. My Dear Brothers che è solo del 2021 fa sfortunatamente cringiare di brutto nelle scene di baci dei poveri protagonisti.

28) Un personaggio che hai odiato: Go Ahead

Non c’era partita. Non c’è personaggio, di tutto il 2022 (e probabilmente non solo), che io abbia odiato quanto la mamma del fratello maggiore di Go Ahead. Ogni volta che compariva in scena, mi faceva infuriare. Quando non c’era, temevo il suo ritorno. Era un ciclo infinito di timore e rabbia. La madre del fratello maggiore era una manipolatrice di prima categoria. Bugiarda. Infingarda. Egoista. Egocentrica. Psicopatica. Per carità, personaggio fantastico, scritto benissimo, ma se l’avessi avuta davanti, le avrei urlato in faccia fino a perdere la voce. Per quanto mi riguarda, i suoi figli stanno meglio lontani da lei, in particolare il maggiore, visto che per tutta la serie non ha fatto altro che procurargli un trauma dopo l’altro. Non era possibile sistemare il loro rapporto, in alcun modo. Anche se lei si fosse redenta (e non l’ha mai fatto, anche nell’ultimo episodio ha compiuto delle scelte sbagliate e una sola giusta, aka andarsene), il suo rapporto con il figlio maggiore è stato talmente rovinato da anni di soprusi e traumi vari, che la cosa migliore che potrebbe fare per lui è sparire per sempre dalla sua vita. Non sempre i rapporti si possono aggiustare e il loro è uno di questi. Ma sto divagando. Non dimenticherò mai come non si sia mai preoccupata o resa conto di quanto lui stesse male in sua presenza, a causa della sua pretesa di tenerlo lontano dalle uniche persone che avevano a cuore il suo interesse, troppo preoccupata di un’unica cosa: sé stessa.

29) Miglior bacio: Bad Buddy

E' un anno che penso di dare il premio del miglior bacio a Bad Buddy (l'ho visto a gennaio), perché la scena del quinto episodio, in cui finalmente Pat e Pran cedono alla tensione che li accompagna da tempo, è una scena meravigliosa. Non è solo il bacio a essere ben girato, è tutta la scena in sé a colpire e coinvolgere il telespettatore. Dopo aver finalmente messo le carte in tavola ed essersi baciati, i nostri due Romeo thailandesi hanno due reazioni completamente diverse: abbiamo Pat che sorride dolcemente perché ha finalmente trovato il tassello del puzzle che gli mancava (cioè che Pran, molto semplicemente, gli piace come ragazzo) e Pran che invece è travolto dallo sconforto. Lui sa da secoli di amare Pat, ma ora che ha finalmente assaporato il frutto proibito, è convinto che dovrà comunque separarsene perché per loro non c'è futuro visto che i rispettivi genitori si odiano. E' una scena molto intensa e merita che questo premio non le venga portato via. Bonus: Mi è toccato scartare Semantic Error e You Are My Glory, ma anche una marea di altri drama... sapete quanti baci ci sono in 58 drama? Eh, tanti!

30) L'ambientazione migliore: The Sound of Magic

Complice un po' di magia, moltissimi degli scenari proposti nel drama The Sound of Magic erano una gioia per gli occhi. In particolare, il lunapark e le sue attrazioni, soprattutto di notte, grazie a giochi di luci e ai colori erano veramente bellissimi.

31) Il personaggio più stupido: KinnPorsche

Io voglio tanto, tanto bene a Porsche, è anche uno dei miei personaggi preferiti della serie nonostante tutto. Ci tengo un sacco a lui e voglio che sia felice e che la sua storia con Kinn vada sempre alla grande, ma... dannazione, di quante prove hai avuto bisogno, benedetto ragazzo, per renderti conto che forse non era il caso di fidarti di Vegas? E, pure quando te ne sei reso conto, hai lo stesso continuato a concedergli fin troppa fiducia. C'è un limite alla stupidità e tu l'hai ampiamente sfondato.

32) Il personaggio più intelligente: Love Like The Galaxy

Premettendo che è vergognoso che Love Like The Galaxy compaia così poco in questo quizzone (guardatelo, è bellissimo, io l'ho adorato), Niao Niao (interpretata da Zhao Lusi), protagonista di questo drama, mi ha decisamente colpito in modo favorevole. Niao Niao è una ragazza che, per cause esterne, è stata "cresciuta" dalla zia e dalla nonna ed è stata praticamente abbandonata dai suoi genitori che si sono presentati solo dopo quindici anni. Di conseguenza, Niao Niao è una persona con problemi di abbandono e che, lasciata allo sbando e maltrattata dalla famiglia paterna, è cresciuta illetterata e vendicativa, ma anche dannatamente intelligente. Ed è questa la prima cosa che mi ha colpito di lei, fin dai primi episodi. Nota dettagli che altre persone non notano e molto spesso se la cava anche grazia alla sua intelligenza, senza farsi problemi a sfruttare la situazione e tutte le armi in suo possesso.

33) Miglior bromance: Weak Hero Class 1

(SPOILER) Raga, che sofferenza questa bromance. I due personaggi principali di Weak Hero Class e la loro amicizia mi hanno veramente spezzato il cuore. Sono partiti come due compagni di classe che probabilmente non si erano mai rivolti prima la parola (per forza, uno è il primo della classe, l'altro quello che dormiva durante le lezioni), per arrivare a una profonda amicizia. Così profonda che uno dei due non ci ha pensato due volte a vendicare l'amico, anche se questo ha significato farsi espellere e finire in una scuola di livello inferiore (l'unica che lo accettasse). Tra l'altro adoro che, per vendicarsi, Yeon Shi Eun abbia utilizzato le tecniche di lotta che gli aveva insegnato il suo amico.

34) Quale drama meriterebbe un sequel: Mezzanotte a Istanbul

Questo drama è il mio primo e finora unico drama turco. Non ne avevo mai visto prima uno, ma questo ha proprio lasciato il segno. Onestamente, non solo Mezzanotte a Istanbul meriterebbe un sequel, dovrebbero proprio farne uno, perché hanno lasciato aperto un po' di porte alla fine della stagione e di misteri ancora da svelare non ne mancano, anzi! Inoltre, i protagonisti mi sono piaciuti tutti e mi piacerebbe un sacco continuare a seguire le loro avventure in chissà quale anno del secolo scorso. Continuo a incrociare le dita che Netflix ci faccia un pensierino.

35) Una serie per piangere, una per divertirsi e una per rilassarsi: Tomorrow, Crazy Love e Strange Lawyer Woo Young Woo

La scelta per le prime due opzioni è stata un po' obbligata, soprattutto per la serie per piangere, perché guardando la mia lista mi sono accorta che l'unica serie fatta apposta per farti versare lacrime che ho guardato quest'anno è Tomorrow. Drama che te ne fa anche versare in più di un'occasione perché trattando il tema dei suicidi, ha tirato fuori storie da magone unico. Una, in particolare, era incentrata sulla storia di un cane che mi ha distrutto psicologicamente, penso di aver pianto per almeno metà puntata.

Invece, penso che la serie per divertirsi sia decisamente Crazy Love che, anche se non è stata una visione eccelsa, ha sicuramente moltissimi momenti da risata sicura, complice anche l'interpretazione esilarante dei due protagonisti.

Infine, ho trovato Strange Lawyer Woo Young Woo, drama incentrato sulla vita lavorativa di un'avvocatessa autistica, molto rilassante. Nonostante si concentri su dei casi da portare in tribunale, qualcuno con tematiche serie altri meno, la narrazione non era mai eccessivamente pesante e questo ha reso la visione sempre piacevole, portandomi addirittura a rilassarmi nel vedere un episodio. Penso che sia l'unico drama a tema legale che abbia mai visto che mi abbia fatto questo effetto, visto che di solito sono molto seri o fatti per far lavorare il cervello. E' stata una novità piacevole.

36) Una ship fittizia che tu però shippi: Mystery To Iunakare

In questo drama giapponese che parla di un ragazzo dalla folta chioma (interpretato da Masaki Suda) che risolve casi suo malgrado, non ho potuto fare a meno di shippare il protagonista con Inudo Garo, un personaggio che sostanzialmente era pure una guest star. A onor del vero, compare in circa la metà degli episodi, ma è comunque un ruolo piccolo. Nonostante tutto, penso che i due avessero una dinamica fantastica (da una parte un ragazzo qualunque che risolve casi e dall'altra uno che vorrebbe vendicarsi per la morte della sorella) e mi è bastato pochissimo per desiderare che Inudo Garo avesse un ruolo ancora più grande e che quella sorta di amicizia sfociasse in altro. <3 In generale, comunque, anche se il drama ha peccato un po' sulla parte finale (un po' noiosa), ha avuto anche dei casi molto interessanti e il protagonista era una ventata di aria fresca.

37) La vendetta più bella: Big Mouse

(SPOILER)

Un momento in cui ho provato grande soddisfazione è senz'altro sul finale di Big Mouse, quando Park Chang Ho rende radioattiva la piscina del villain principale e lo fa morire così, durante il suo hobby preferito. Big Mouse ha un finale un po' controverso, perché tutta la storyline finale sulla moglie era piuttosto non necessaria e crudele da parte degli autori, ma questa svolta finale ha decisamente addolcito la cosa, così come vedere il lead abbracciare il suo nuovo ruolo come Big Mouse (in generale, comunque, il nuovo drama di Lee Jong Suk è stato decisamente deludente. Peccato).

38) Il finale che vorresti riscrivere. E come? My Dear Brothers

Allora... il fatto è che questo è un drama in cui personaggio x finisce in un altro mondo (di solito wuxia), affronta mille peripezie e poi ritorna nel mondo reale. E dato che molto spesso si vuole dare il contentino, la lead di turno finisce per incontrare nel mondo reale e all'ultimo secondo un personaggio identico al lead che ha dovuto abbandonare. Completamente a caso, e senza una spiegazione. A me questo genere di finale ha rotto le scatole. In generale, preferisco che i personaggi non riescano a tornare a casa (come nel manga Anatolia Story, per fare un esempio. Se ci pensate, ha un che di agrodolce, perché non si può più rivedere la propria famiglia), oppure la cosa si accetta se entrambi sono finiti nel passato (Romance of Tiger and Rose), ma così... Io avrei lasciato che i due fratelli non riuscissero a tornare a casa e rimanessero lì, con tutte le conseguenze del caso, oppure che ritornasse solo uno dei due.

39) Una serie che tutti hanno osannato ma che a te non è piaciuta: Extraordinary You

Okay, non sarà chissà che super serie, però ha un punteggio alto su mydramalist e mi chiedo: perché? E' uno dei drama più ripetitivi che abbia mai visto. Le stesse situazioni continuavano a ripetersi a ciclo continuo, rendendo la visione sempre più stancante e lunga. Di solito, un drama coreano di 16 episodi spezzati in due, sono effettivamente 16 episodi nonostante la divisione, che è solo fittizia. Ecco, qui non lo era affatto. Qui gli episodi sono effettivamente 32, lo stacco si sente da una mezz'ora all'altra, rendendo la visione stancante per il continuo ripetersi di situazioni e dialoghi nonostante la brevità. Il drama era partito anche bene per l'originalità della storia, un personaggio extra di un webtoon che si rende conto di essere tale e cerca di combattere il suo fato, ma a conti fa Extraordinary You si è perso piuttosto presto.

40) Drama droppati?: Detective Chinatown (9 di 12 visti), Nirvana in Fire (2 di 54 visti)

In un certo senso... pochi quest'anno. Il problema di Detective Chinatown è che è divisa in 3 storie per niente bilanciate. Se le prime due sono almeno collegate, la terza ha addirittura personaggi diversi, e sembra anche una serie diversa, perché non ci azzecca un tubo con le prime due storie. La prima storia di Detective Chinatown mi è piaciuta un sacco, la seconda l'ho trovata un po' mediocre e la terza ho dovuto mollarla subito perché noiosissima. Un vero peccato.

Per quanto riguarda Nirvana in Fire, mi è spiaciuto perché sono sicura che sia un ottimo drama, ma non faceva per me. Non ho problemi né con i drama cinesi, né con i drama lunghi, solo che, arrivata al secondo episodio, mi sono resa conto che non c'era niente che mi spingesse ad andare avanti e quindi era meglio mollare.

41) Un momento o una frase che ancora adesso ti è rimasta impressa? Go Ahead

Go Ahead ha un sacco di momenti importanti che restano impressi, ma una scena che voglio assolutamente citare è il fratello maggiore che si addormenta sulla spalla del padre, che finalmente si lascia andare e torna ad essere figlio anziché essere la persona adulta e matura che è dovuta essere per anni per stare dietro all'egoismo intrinseco di sua madre. Il povero Ling Xiao che per anni ha dormito aiutato dai farmaci perché lo stress a cui era sottoposto quotidianamente lo aveva cambiato, in quel momento è solo un ragazzo che si addormenta su un auto in compagnia del padre e che finalmente si permette di essere vulnerabile. Penso sia proprio un bel momento.

42) Un must see che ancora ti manca? My Love From The Star

Un classico dei kdrama del 2013, ma che io ancora non ho mai visto. Non l'ho ancora eliminato nemmeno dai "plan to watch" di mydramalist, perché penso di vederlo prima o poi. Penso che sia il fatto che il lead è un alieno a trattenermi, perché non mi ispira granché come cosa.

Domanda bonus: L'anno scorso la sfida era di vedere un drama On Air e commentarlo. Ci siete riuscite? Come è stata l'esperienza?

Sìììì! Ho portato a termine la sfida! Al pelo... Inizialmente avevo pensato di commentare KinnPorsche guardandolo on air. L'ho effettivamente guardato on air, ma mi capitava in un giorno sbagliato e ho perso il treno (metaforicamente parlando) per iniziare a commentarlo. Quindi alla fine ho scelto War of Y che, destino voleva, si concludeva a metà dicembre, giusto prima della fine dell'anno. Non è stato facile perché ho visto il drama con sub brutti, però è stata un'esperienza interessante. Praticamente uno sfogo settimanale.

I can't remember if I talked about it last year but it's in the same universe as all my arkin stuff from last nano (and whatever else I have floating around in that tag) but in short: Darkness is like a Tangible Thing that kills people in the arkin universe a lamplighter is like an emergency first responder who goes around lighting lamps whenever the Darkness tries to get a little too close to civilization. usually lamplighters are guard captains, arkinites, sturdy folk etc etc

anyway THE lamplighter short story is about Kaya, Dae-Hyun, and Amar, three arkinites (basically magic people) in the city of astrallen as The Most Important Light in the city is stolen, causing a plague of Darkness to descend and kill a bunch of people, etc etc. basically a heist mystery where they all think one of the others did it and the whole town is like. very much against them because it did technically start a natural disaster that killed thousands

History/Background:

Saris comes from a long line of Mandalorians, the Tanda Clan has been in the creed for generations, and she has ten very protective brothers- five older, five younger (four of them are adopted foundlings).

She lived on a fiery volcanic planet in the Mandalore system with her family until she was 10 years old- when her parents trying to defend the village they lived in were killed by force users (unknown if they were Sith, Jedi, or something else). She and her brothers managed to escape to Nevarro, where they met and joined the covert there- which is also where Saris met 10 year old Din. They became friends, and by the time they were 17 and 18 they’d fallen in love. The night before they were to swear into the creed, they promised that they would wait for each other and get married as soon as they were old enough (20 yrs).

For the next few years, they teamed up for most Guild jobs, becoming a team to be reckoned with until they were known in the Bounty Hunting business as a unit and unstoppable team. Then they were married/took on the riddurok and have been a bounty hunting team since.

This is a pretty important plot point so I’ll keep it vague!

Liviana- She’d be happy… but also worried. MC’s already going through a lot with being a demigod and the upcoming war… not to mention that she’s also pretty stressed out about everything. If MC happens to reciprocate her feelings, she’ll be forced to put in a lot of effort and put a lot of expectations on them in order for a relationship to work out.

Amare- Deny, deny, deny. Amare hates humans, and if he dares to let one get close, and welcome them to his galaxy, they’re bound to destroy everything in their wake. That’s just their nature. He’ll push all of this back as much as he can.

Estelle- Same as Amare, she’d deny it, but she’d be better at hiding it. She has nothing against humans except the general wariness any species would have to a new species being introduced, but she can’t deal with this right now. Her only plan with MC is to help them escape this war and get back home. That’s all she needs to focus on right now.

Ellery- Gets really giddy about it. MC’s such an interesting person, and it’s always great to have someone new to obsess over. Makes his life more interesting.

Vega- They went through all that effort to defeat the gods and MC just to end up falling for them. They’re pissed off about it, to say the least.

🎄🎬 O que é melhor do que um filme de natal bem natalino? Exatamente, um filme que a história não tem nada relacionado com o natal mas se passa na época do natal. Pensando nisso, nós separamos alguns filmes que o Natal não é o foco deles mas, por se passar na época, trás um tcham a mais.

Olá! Eu sou o Matias e tô junto com a Bia aqui no The B Experience. Como é minha primeira aparição aqui e justamente nesse post, devo-lhes dizer que eu não sou o maior fã de filmes de Natal (apesar de amar a data), porém aqui vão algumas recomendações de filmes natalinos de alguém que não gosta desse tipo de filme. Espero que gostem! :)

1- Batman: Returns (1992) - Dirigido por: Tim Burton.

Todo mundo ama os filmes do Tim Burton. Seu estilo intrigante puxado para o macabro e iconografias únicas cativaram toda uma geração e as próximas, sendo um dos diretores contemporâneos mais consolidados na memória popular por sua autoralidade. Isso não é exceção aqui. Batman: Returns é a sequência do longa de 1989. Sendo estrelado por Michael Keaton (Bruce Wayne/Batman), Michelle Pfeiffer (Selina Kyle/Mulher-Gato), Danny DeVito (Pinguim) e grande elenco, o filme segue a narrativa do Pinguim que, aliado ao empresário Max Shreck planeja uma grande ameaça ao Cavaleiro das Trevas e a toda Gotham City. Sabendo dos planos de seu chefe, Selina Kyle, secretária de Shreck, assume a persona de Mulher-Gato e alia-se aos dois antagonistas em uma nova ameaça a cidade do Cruzado Encapuzado.

2- The Guardians of the Galaxy: Holiday Special (2022) - Dirigido por: James Gunn.

O MCU também marca sua presença com o especial de Natal da equipe mais disfuncional da Galáxia. Estrelado por Pom Klementieff (Mantis), Dave Bautista (Drax), Kevin Bacon (como ele mesmo) e grande elenco.

O especial segue Mantis e Drax indo para a Terra na esperança de achar Kevin Bacon e fazê-lo de presente para Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), que está triste no Natal por conta dos eventos de Vingadores: Guerra Infinita e Ultimato. Com os dois amigos empenhados em alegrar o Natal de Quill (apesar dos mesmos e de todos os membros da equipe não fazerem ideia do que o feriado se trata), começa uma aventura musical com humor non-sense, brigas com a polícia e cosplayers, bebedeira e o espírito natalino em sua forma mais “que p**** é essa?”, típico do James Gunn e seu time.

3- Esqueceram de Mim (1990) - Dirigido por: Chris Columbus.

O clássico da Sessão da Tarde e talvez um dos filmes de Natal mais amados e lembrados de todos os tempos não poderia ser esquecido na lista! Estrelado por Macaulay Culkin (Kevin McCallister), Joe Pesci (Harry), Daniel Stern (Marv) e grande elenco.

No clássico noventista, Kevin é um garoto travesso que acidentalmente é esquecido em casa por sua família no período do Natal. Trancado em casa e com dois bandidos à espreita tentando roubar o local, o menino escolhe dar aos ladrões os presentes de Natal mais dolorosos que alguém poderia desejar.

Um filme quase universal para assistir na noite da Ceia, descansar a cabeça e aproveitar o espírito do feriado!

Três filmes tranquilos, leves e rápidos para vocês aproveitarem o feriado com aquele gostinho de cinema. Eu espero que tenham gostado das indicações, aproveitem o feriado com as pessoas queridas para vocês, boas festas, um feliz Natal e um próspero ano novo à todos vocês!

E agora que o Matias falou desses filmes incríveis, é a minha vez, mais três filmes ótimos para aproveitar esse descanso com algo que não grita “Natal!”

1- Carol (2015) - Dirigido por: Todd Haynes.

O filme é baseado no livro O Preço do Sal, de Patricia Highsmith. Conta a história de Therese Belivet, uma moça que trabalha em uma loja de departamento e lá conhece Carol Aird, que está a procura de um presente de Natal para sua filha.

Carol faz uma encomenda, um kit de trens à recomendação de Therese, e propositalmente deixa sua luva no balcão de Therese que, meio incerta, manda as luvas junto do trem de brinquedo. Carol, então, ao receber o pacote liga para a loja para entrar em contato com Therese e consegue convencer a moça a deixá-la levar para um almoço como agradecimento.

As duas se tornam amigas e, quando Carol decide viajar por uns dias e chama Therese para ir junto, ela não hesita em acompanhar a mulher, além de ser a desculpa perfeita para fugir do seu namorado, o qual não ama. Carol, por sua parte, está em processo de se divorciar do marido que desconfia do relacionamento da esposa com a nova amiga. O relacionamento das duas evolui enquanto o que era para ser uma simples viagem se torna uma fuga ao longo dos Estados Unidos, coberta pela neve de dezembro e seus temas natalinos.

2- Rent (2005) - Dirigido por: Chris Columbus.

O filme é baseado na peça musical escrita pelo incrível Jonathan Larson e vai falar sobre um grupo de amigos artistas e as dificuldades de viver da arte.

Uma história cheia de coração com músicas lindas, animadas e também que nos fazem chorar, Rent vai te fazer torcer por esses personagens que você conhece há apenas meia hora. É incrível acompanhar as desavenças dos amores, os dramas de saúde e as brigas por identidade e valor.

Um filme que literalmente diz ser o dia 24 de dezembro e algum tempo depois vemos os personagens comemorando o ano novo, é um filme perfeito para assistir na semana entre as duas festividades.

3- Gremlins (1984) - Dirigido por: Joe Dante.

A comédia de terror é completamente ambientada na época natalesca do fim do ano. Um inventor, à procura de um presente para o seu filho, acha algo bem interessante em uma loja em Chinatown. O vendedor vende o brinquedo, chamado de Gizmo, para ele apenas sob as condições de que o bichinho não seja exposto ao sol, nem à água e nem alimentado após a meia-noite.

A criança, porém, é conquistada pelo novo brinquedo que o convence a quebrar todas as regras e, assim, Gizmo se reproduz em outros cinco bichinhos iguais a ele. Assim, os cinco gremlins decidem destruir a cidade em plena véspera de Natal.

O filme com roteiro de Chris Columbus é a escolha perfeita para os amantes de terror e fantasia assistir no fim de ano.
