Amapiano, a Nguni word loosely translated to "the pianos", is a South African subgenre of house music that emerged in South Africa in the mid-2010s. It is a hybrid of deep house, jazz, and lounge music characterized by synths and wide percussive basslines.
There is ambiguity and debate concerning its origins, with various accounts of the musical styles in the Johannesburg townships. Because it has a small similarities with Bacardi, some people assert the genre began in Pretoria but it remains uncertain. Various accounts as to who formed the popular genre make it impossible to accurately pinpoint its origins.
The word amapiano is a IsiZulu or IsiXhosa, or dipiano is a word loosely translated to "the pianos", The genre is mostly sang in Zulu and Xhosa, Sotho, Setswana, Xitsonga, one of South Africa's native tongues.
Amapiano is a subgenre of house and kwaito music. It is a hybrid of deep house, jazz, and lounge music characterised by synths and wide percussive basslines.
Amapiano is distinguished by high-pitched piano melodies, kwaito from South Africa basslines, low tempo 1990s South African house rhythms and percussions from another local subgenre of house known as tribal house.
An important element of the genre is the prevalent use of the "log drum", a wide percussive bassline, which was popularised by producer MDU aka TRP. According to amapiano pioneer Kabza De Small:
Tumblr media
I don't know what happened. I don't know how he figured out the log drum. Amapiano music has always been there, but he's the one who came up with the log drum sound. These boys like experimenting. They always check out new plug-ins. So when MDU figured it out, he ran with it.
The use of percussive basslines in South African house music predates amapiano, and was possibly pioneered by kwaito producer M’Du (also known as Mdu Masilela.)

loved your Tyla and Billie readings! They were exactly how I picture the views on them, especially the Korean industry, Billie is highly loved by young Koreans and I love how you mentioned the expensiveness of what she wears cause sadly its something the society sees a lot, but overall she’s really cool. With Tyla I got the same vibes, it was insane how quickly the Korean industry used her as an inspiration for their group’s comebacks, she’s lovable and is pretty popular there but yeah they know its profitable, love the love she’s receiving tho, she deserves it and has a strong aura.
what’s interesting is that they love Tyla but seem to dislike Sabrina’s style, I know Tyla is not that explicit but she has this very hot sexy vibe on her as well so I thought the Korean industry/idols wouldn’t tell that there is a huge difference between them and they’d have the same opinions of them, good opinions I mean. It’s sad that Sabrina is getting hate, but well someday she’ll get the respect she deserves
Before I begin! Shout out to both Tyla and Sabrina! Love them both!
Hiii anon! Thank you for enjoying my readings, thank god my cards interpreted the singers correctly!! And for Billie lol don’t expect her to not flaunt her cash hahaha!! Koreans love Tyla, and I’m glad her PR team picked up on that and had promotions over there in SK! I mean look at what Irene said about Tyla! (There’s more but tumblr is stingy when sharing pics 🥲)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was also quite surprised that they weren’t fond of Sabrina, because well obviously, I don’t wanna sound weird and all but i genuinely thought they would approve of her because well… shes white.🤐
You know the double standards in society with White people vs Black people. So that’s why I had assumed that before shuffling.
Tylas dances may be sexy and all but, they’re very modest and are executed in a fun and groovy way. You know with the rise of amapiano and South African dance, South Koreans LOVEEE twerking and seeing hips move, which is why they always in awe when they see Ms Tyla! Hence why we have Smart, that Kiss of Life song… I forgot the name, NWJNS always talking about Tyla and watching her M/V’s and performances, K/J-Idols participating in Tylas dance challenges. They genuinely enjoy her art and music, but it’s always the dances because once again, the groove, aura and enjoyment you get and looking/jamming to Tyla.
Now for Sabrina… their energies were a hard no! Yes they may see her as hot and all but… the concept and execution is just too explicit for them. Remember… in the reading I did say there was a lot of conservative energy and all, because they really don’t agree with her art and musical approach. I mean look at the Juno positions, the freaky lyrics and etc. it’s just a hard no for them.
It’s not like all groups disapprove of her, there are a few that I’ve seen who speak highly of her. I can only think of my NWJNS girlies since they’re the only group I see on my tl lol!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I made a vid complication since tumblr is also stingy with posting vids, and I have vids of both Tyla and Sabrina. You can tell the difference with performance and the concept.

it time for black executives and business people to focus on an industry built by Black people, for Black people. Muni Long’s recent bold stand against cultural appropriation in the music industry has sparked significant attention, shedding light on the harsh realities Black artists face. By calling out the industry’s systemic exploitation, Long is risking her career and potentially facing blackballing for speaking up. She has bravely addressed how Black talent, creators, and musicians contribute immensely to the music industry’s sounds, lyrics, and experiences, yet are often overlooked, underpaid, or outright stolen from.
Critics misinterpret her words, accusing her of claiming she never wants to work with white people, when in fact, Long is advocating for the fair treatment of Black artists, tired of being taken advantage of. She highlights how executives push for music that sounds one way but represents another, profiting from Black culture while failing to support Black creators. This is the moment for rising African music genres like Afrobeats and Amapiano in South Africa to take a stand in protecting intellectual property and ensuring that the credit and profits go where they truly belong.
Please note that while Muni Long specifically mentioned Atlantic Records, she also highlighted a broader issue within the music industry: the exploitation of Black creativity without proper credit, payment, or acceptance of Black people. She emphasized that Atlantic Records, like much of the industry, often seeks to profit from Black culture while disregarding the people who created it.
Black people need to stop explaining and apologizing in 2025.
We have nothing to apologize for....ever

Top 20 K-pop songs in 2024 (Part 2, 10-1)
Here's Part 1 (20-11) in case you missed it yesterday. Let's get right down to it!
10. Sad Song by P1Harmony
Easily the best Latin-infused Kpop song since Antifragile. The chorus is crazy addictive, the raps and vocals are stunning and the beat gets you dancing from the very first note.
youtube
9. Sticky by Kiss Of Life
I struggled to pick between Midas Touch and this, but at the end of the day, Sticky was my song of the summer. The Afrobeats vibe always works for me and the chorus is among the best of the year.
youtube
8. ABCD by Nayeon
What a DIVA! This song really brings me back to the sound of the 2000s and the memories of my childhood. I couldn't not give it a high placement.
youtube
7. Run For Roses by NMIXX
Adding country/folk touches to a Kpop song might sound like a weird idea, but I'm so here for it. I hope their future releases stay as surprising as this one.
youtube
6. I'm Ready by Chung Ha
She really should stick to this style and sound, cause no one else in the industry can pull it off like her. I would go as far as saying this is the coolest choreography of the year.
youtube
5. Love Wins All by IU
No other ballad released this year has reached the soaring heights of this one. It's also one of the best of her career, which is saying a lot. And of course, the music video is an all-timer.
youtube
4. Supernova by aespa
I feel like I think about that beat change constantly. And it has so many iconic lines, like the first one or the Body Bang thing. Hell, I might even consider it their new representative song.
youtube
3. Déjà Vu by TXT
The best boy group release of the year, without a doubt. Their raspy, desperate vocals perfectly capture the yearning and heartbreak of the lyrics, aided by the emo vibes of the beat.
youtube
2. Lost by RM
youtube
Right Place, Wrong Person is IMHO the album of the year, and the lead single is the perfect representation of its eclectic brilliance. On top of that, the MV is one of the best things I've ever seen.
1. Smart by Le Sserafim
Back in February I predicted this would be my number one song and here we are. I just love everything about it: the amapiano beat, the lyrics, the vocals, the choreography. Can't wait to see if they'll top it!
youtube
And that's all folks!

Hello hello Lemon!
Here is my nice ask for you: as a fellow enjoyer of non-English music, is there any music style from another country that is your favourite?
Hope you have a good day!
Thank you Dalawa!!!! I love this question!!!!!!
My favorite music genre, period, is cumbia!! Which is a style of dance music from Central & South America. I believe it originated in Colombia and I especially love Colombian cumbia!!! It’s very distinct because the beat sounds like it’s being played backwards!! Like, it’s slow and woozy and sexy. But it’s also upbeat and funky. It’s so tropical sounding, with the wooden flutes and other wind instruments. There are some really cool artists out there doing electra-cumbia and psych-cumbia. My favorite is tropical cumbia. I’m just obsessed.
I am also very very very into Afrobeats. My favorite is West African, the music coming out of Nigeria and Senegal right now is so amazing. But I also really love Amapiano, which is South African house music. It’s another genre where the beat is super distinct. It always starts out super slow and steady and then it builds and builds until it just takes over. It’s sooooo cool!!!
One other genre I really love is reggaeton, it’s a very very popular genre of music all across Latin America right now. It’s just Caribbean pop music!! I can’t handle it it’s so good.
Some song recs below the cut

What kind of music are you into?
Any band recommendations?
i listen to music by just hitting shuffle on my spotify likes, which has like 2000 songs on it I listen to over and over. I'll link a few here! sorry if you dont have spotify, you might be able to search em on youtube
E-L-R - Seeds - this is a track a friend sent me recently and i've just been listening to it on repeat. it's the kind of music I would wander around in a forest to, feeling slightly angsty but also chill as hell
Bathory - Foreverdark Woods - viking metal!! i love viking metal! imagine big handsome vikings riding horses around with big shields on their backs
Davido, Focalistic - Champion Sound - I got really into amapiano a couple years back. absolute bop
Amnesia Scanner - AS Too Wrong - this track sounds evil. I like music that sounds like there's just some evil men approaching me and I have to back away slowly
The Polish Ambassador - The Juiceman Cometh - just funky as hell, listen to that bouncing beat. makes me think of being really fat and jiggly and just walking along breasting boobily
TR/ST - Poorly Coward - I just love the way this guy sings and the dark electronica of it all.
Yuck - Operation - lo-fi indie rock kinda stuff? love it. reminds me of being back at college
Slugabed - Quantum Leap - chaotic electronic music with just loads of stuff going on. makes my brain explode (in a good way)

Thabang Swarts: The Rise of Ranger
No justice can be served from what`s already written about Ranger. Before we get to this roof, Draper, known as Thabang Manyelo needs to be acknowledged. His birthday is on the 6th of August, so be sure to make it special. You didn't hear it from us.
Mr Manyelo has been a potent force in the advertising industry. I must honor his contributions as a Global Award-Winning Creative, voice-over Artist, co-creator, innovator, and writer in a different post. I believe he is the bridge for the "unheard" and I look forward to sharing my observations but for now, until then.
In the vibrant tapestry of contemporary music, Thabang Swarts, affectionately known as Ranger, emerges as a luminary whose artistry transcends conventional boundaries. Born in 1999, this prodigious talent is not merely a DJ or producer; he embodies the spirit of innovation within the realm of Amapiano and Hip Hop. His journey is marked by an intriguing backstory that intertwines ambition, passion, and an unwavering commitment to his craft.
Interestingly, Ranger’s moniker does not stem from notions of danger or recklessness; rather, it reflects his initial aspirations to become a game ranger. This pursuit speaks volumes about his connection to nature and the environment—a theme that subtly influences his artistic expression. However, recognizing the urgency to harness his innate musical abilities, he made the pivotal decision to pause his studies. This choice underscores a profound understanding that sometimes one must venture into uncharted territories to discover their true calling.
Ranger’s artistry is characterized by an adventurous spirit—an eagerness to explore new sonic landscapes within Amapiano and Hip Hop. He approaches music with what he describes as “naïve intelligence” suggesting that he values fresh perspectives over traditional experience. This philosophy allows him to experiment boldly, crafting sounds that resonate with authenticity while pushing the envelope of genre conventions. His work is not just about creating tracks; it’s about teaching the world new elements of music that have yet to be fully realized.
His dedication to hard work is palpable in every performance. When Ranger takes the stage, he doesn’t merely play music; he ignites an experience that captivates audiences and leaves them yearning for more. His sets are infused with undeniable brilliance—each beat meticulously crafted, each transition seamless—creating an atmosphere where listeners can lose themselves in rhythm and melody.
As we look toward the future, it becomes increasingly clear that Ranger is poised for greatness. He represents a new generation of artists who aren`t afraid to challenge norms and redefine what it means to be a musician in today’s world. For those who appreciate innovation and seek out emerging talents, Ranger is undoubtedly a name worth remembering—and shouting from the rooftops.
To end the beginning of such a grace, Thabang Swarts—Ranger—is not just another name in the industry; he symbolizes a movement toward authenticity and exploration in music. As he continues on this path, one can only anticipate how far his journey will take him and how many hearts he will touch along the way.
And I am entitled to have my informed opinion but "Chela" which means "drink" as shared by Draper himself deserves a Grammy. I wouldn`t have known this song without Didi Lifestyle, another post-loading as only mentioning him as DJ would be offensive to the spirit.
To indulge in this otic odyssey, please click the link:
My heart is full. The House District appreciates your contribution and foundation to our sonic landscape. We are excited for South Africa. Honestly, what a transcendence! The future of house music is indeed in safe hands.
