The Most Popular Beer at Every NFL Stadium, According to the Untappd App
Tumblr media
Last week marked the start of the 2021 NFL season, and with fans returning to watch the games in person, that also means tailgating and stadium brews are back on the table. Yet some beers tend to be more popular than others on game days.
In a recent article, USA Today Sports’ The List Wire shared the most popular beers at every NFL stadium. To compile the ranking, The List Wire partnered with the drinking app Untappd, and based the results on the “most checked-in” beer at each location since the 2019 season.
Though the methodology isn’t completely comprehensive, the results paint an interesting picture of varying style preferences, and showcase a range of brands from regional to national.
At MetLife Stadium, home of the New York Giants and Jets, Bud Light was the beer of choice. The nation’s best-selling beer also came out on top at the Miami Dolphins’ Hard Rock Stadium.
Fans watching the Eagles play at Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Stadium opted for Sly Fox Brewing’s Vulpulin, a locally brewed IPA. New England Patriots fans also favored something closer to home: Massachusetts’s own Julius IPA from Tree House Brewing Company. (Sorry, Sam Adams.)
Read on for the most popular beer at each NFL stadium.

NFL Week 11 Opening Lines and Spreads added to SmartSport on Trello
Smart Sport added the card NFL Week 11 Opening Lines and Spreads to the NFL Week 11 Opening Lines and Spreads list in the SmartSport board at November 16, 2020 at 12:24PM NFL Week 11 Opening Lines and Spreads https://www.sportsbettingdime.com/news/nfl/week-11-opening-lines-spreads/ The opening lines for Week 11 of the NFL season have been released The unbeaten Pittsburgh Steelers are 10.5-point road favorites over the Jacksonville Jaguars The over/under is 56.5 for Thursday night’s game between the Arizona Cardinals and Seahawks in Seattle The opening lines have been released for Week 11 of the NFL season. Fans can only hope this upcoming week’s game are exciting as the one Sunday in Phoenix. Kyler Murray’s “Hail Mary” — “Hail Murray?” — 44-yard touchdown pass to DeAndre Hopkins with two seconds remaining lifted the Cardinals to a 32-30 victory over the Buffalo Bills. Let’s take a look at some of the highs and lows of the latest NFL odds. NFL Week 11 Opening Lines Team Moneyline Spread Over/Under Arizona Cardinals +172 +4.5 (-118) Over 56.5 (-110) Seattle Seahawks -205 -4.5 (-104) Under 56.5 (-110) Team Moneyline Spread Over/Under Philadelphia Eagles +128 +3 (-110) Over 45.5 (-110) Cleveland Browns -148 -3 (-110) Under 45.5 (-110) Team Moneyline Spread Over/Under Atlanta Falcons +300 +7 (-105) N/A New Orleans Saints -360 -7 (-115) N/A Team Moneyline Spread Over/Under Detroit Lions +106 +3 (-115) N/A Carolina Panthers -120 -3 (-105) N/A Team Moneyline Spread Over/Under New England Patriots +138 +2.5 (-110) N/A Houston Texans -152 -2.5 (-110) N/A Team Moneyline Spread Over/Under Pittsburgh Steelers -520 -10.5 (-105) Over 46 (-110) Jacksonville Jaguars +400 +10.5 (-115) Under 46 (-110) Team Moneyline Spread Over/Under Green Bay Packers +100 +1.5 (-110) Over 49 (-110) Indianapolis Colts -118 -1.5 (-110) Under 49 (-110) Team Moneyline Spread Over/Under Cincinnati Bengals -102 +1 (-110) Over 45.5 (-110) Washington Football Team -116 -1 (-110) Under 45.5 (-110) Team Moneyline Spread Over/Under Tennessee Titans +263 +7 (-110) N/A Baltimore Ravens -302 -7 (-110) N/A Team Moneyline Spread Over/Under Dallas Cowboys +353 +9 (-115) N/A Minnesota Vikings -412 -9 (-105) N/A Team Moneyline Spread Over/Under Miami Dolphins -148 -2.5 (-114) Over 44.5 (-110) Denver Broncos +126 +2.5 (-106) Under 44.5 (-110) Team Moneyline Spread Over/Under New York Jets +340 +9.5 (-108) Over 47 (-110) Los Angeles Chargers -430 -9.5 (-112) Under 47 (-110) Team Moneyline Spread Over/Under Kansas City Chiefs -330 -7 (-110) Over 55 (-110) Las Vegas Raiders +265 +7 (-110) Under 55 (-110) Team Moneyline Spread Over/Under Los Angeles Rams +160 +3.5 (-110) Over 48.5 (-110) Tampa Bay Buccaneers -200 -3.5 (-110) Under 48.5  (-110) Odds taken Nov. 15 from FanDuel and DraftKings Steelers Big Road Favorites Not surprisingly, the largest Week 11 line has the Pittsburgh Steelers favored by 10.5 points on the road against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Steelers are the last unbeaten team in the NFL at 9-0. The Jaguars have lost eight straight games and are 1-8. Pittsburgh rolled to a 36-10 victory over the visiting Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday as a 6.5-point favorite. Ben Roethlisberger threw for a season-high 333 yards and four touchdowns despite not practicing all week while on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Jacksonville’s Keelan Cole set a franchise record with a 91-yard punt return for a touchdown and also caught a TD pass. Super Bowl 55 Odds Tracker Read More Washington 1-Point Choice The closest line has the Washington Football Team as a one-point choice at home against the Bengals. Washington lost its second game in a row Sunday, dropping a 30-27 decision to the Lions at Detroit as 2.5-point underdogs. A roughing the passer call on Washington defensive end Chase Young, the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year favorite, helped set up Matt Prater’s game-winning 59-yard field goal as time expired. Young tried to be philosophical about the tough loss in which Washington rallied from down 24-3 to tie the game. Chase Young met with the media following today's game in Detroit. 🎥 » https://t.co/ENSb9jHe3h pic.twitter.com/a56QGBM6nW — Washington Football Team (@WashingtonNFL) November 16, 2020 The Bengals defense was riddled by Roethlisberger’s passing. Meanwhile, the offense went 0for-13 on third down. Primetime Shootout Expected The oddsmakers are expecting a Thursday night shootout in Seattle as they have set the over/under at 56.5 points for the Arizona Cardinals-Seahawks game. Seattle and Arizona are tied atop the NFC West standings with the Los Angeles Rams. All three teams have 6-3 records. Murray rallied the Cardinals to victory over the Bills on Sunday in a game that featured 62 points and the miraculous touchdown in the closing seconds. Wanna see it again? @DeAndreHopkins x #RedSea pic.twitter.com/NRBd8Qefxs — Arizona Cardinals (@AZCardinals) November 16, 2020 Seattle lost 23-16 to the Rams at Los Angeles despite Russell Wilson passing for 248 yards and rushing for 60 more. The Seahawks entered the game having allowed the most points and passing yards in the NFL. Low Number on Fins-Broncos The lowest total is 44.5 points for the Miami Dolphins’ visit to Denver to play the Broncos. Miami notched a 29-21 home victory over the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday. The Dolphins’ blitzing defense gave rookie quarterback Justin Herbert problems throughout and he had a season-low 187 yards passing. Six consecutive games with a sack. 💪 @EmanOgbah is a monster. #FinsUp pic.twitter.com/LSbU5k6siW — Miami Dolphins (@MiamiDolphins) November 16, 2020 The Broncos were blown out 37-12 on the road by the Las Vegas Raiders. The Raiders intercepted Drew Lock four times with Jeff Heath recording two of the picks. Line Changes The Cleveland Browns have opened as three-point favorites at home over the Philadelphia Eagles. Though the Browns are 6-3 and Eagles are 3-5-1, the line seems a little high. Look for the number to drop at least a little bit during the week. Another line that feels a little off is the Houston Texans being favored by 2.5 points at home over the New England Patriots. Granted, the Patriots took a 3-5 record into Sunday night’s game against the visiting Baltimore Ravens. However, the Texans are just 2-7 and the Jaguars are the only team they have beaten. Even in such a down year, the public still lacks backing Bill Belichick and the Patriots. Michael Strahan
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Michael Anthony Strahan (born November 21, 1971) is a media personality and former American football defensive end who spent his entire 15-year career with the New York Giants of the National Football League (NFL). Strahan set a record for the most sacks in a season in 2001, and helped the Giants win Super Bowl XLII over the New England Patriots in his final season in 2007. After retiring from the NFL, Strahan became a media personality. He is currently a football analyst on Fox NFL Sunday, and has also served as co-host on the syndicated morning talk show Live! with Kelly and Michael with co-host Kelly Ripa from 2012 to 2016, where he was a two-time Daytime Emmy Award winner. In 2014, he became a regular contributor on the ABC morning television show Good Morning America, and in 2016 the network announced that Strahan would be leaving Live! to join GMA on a full-time basis. He starred in and produced the short-lived Fox sitcom Brothers and appeared as host for Pros vs. Joes alongside fellow Fox football analyst Jay Glazer. On February 1, 2014, he was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. As of 2016, he is the host of the ABC game show The $100,000 Pyramid.
Early life
Strahan was born in Houston, Texas. The youngest of six children, he is the son of Louise (Traylor) Strahan, a basketball coach, and Gene Willie Strahan, a retired Army Major and a boxer with a 1–1 record against future heavyweight Ken Norton. He is the nephew of retired professional football player Arthur Strahan. Gene was a major in the U.S. Army, and when Michael was 9, the family moved to an army post - BFV (Benjamin Franklin Village) - in Mannheim, West Germany. Although Strahan did not begin to play high school football at Westbury High School (Houston, Texas) until his senior year, he did play organized football while attending school at MAHS (Mannheim American High School) a US Department of Defense Dependent High School, in Käfertal (Mannheim), Germany, playing linebacker for the Mannheim Redskins in 1985. The summer before Strahan's senior year of high school, his father sent him to live with his uncle Art (a former NFL defensive lineman) in Houston so he could attend Westbury High School. Strahan played one season of football, which was enough for him to get a scholarship offer from Texas Southern University. He then flew back to Germany for the spring term, where he graduated from Mannheim Christian.
College career
Strahan followed in the footsteps of his uncle Art, who also played defensive end at Texas Southern University. Strahan was so dominant he drew double teams, and TSU coaches dubbed Strahan double teaming "Strahan rules." By his junior season, Strahan began to turn himself into an NFL prospect. As a senior with the Texas Southern Tigers, Strahan was selected All-America first team by The Poor Man's Guide to the NFL Draft, The Sheridan Network, Edd Hayes Black College Sports Report and the Associated Press. He recorded 62 tackles with a school-record 19 quarterback sacks and 32 tackles totaling 142 yards in losses. He was also selected Division I-AA Defensive Player of the Year by The Poor Man's Guide and Edd Hayes Black College Sports Report. In 1992, he was named First Team All-Southwestern Athletic Conference and the SWAC's Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. He was also named Black College Defensive Player of the Year. As a junior in 1991, Strahan led the SWAC with 14.5 quarterback sacks. His 41.5 career sacks is a Texas Southern record.

Professional career
Early career
Strahan was drafted by the New York Giants in 1993. He played in only 9 games due to injuries, and missed the Giants' two playoff games that season. After a few unremarkable seasons, Strahan had a breakout season in 1997, recording 14 sacks. He was voted into his first Pro Bowl and was also named First Team All-Pro by the Associated Press. In 1998, Strahan continued his success, racking up 15 sacks and being voted into his second Pro-Bowl and All-Pro team.
Middle career
Strahan was a member of the 2000 Giants and participated in their playoff run to Super Bowl XXXV. Despite coming off a strong NFC Championship Game, where the Giants defeated the Minnesota Vikings 41–0, the Baltimore Ravens proved too strong for the Giants and they were handily defeated by a score of 34–7. In 2002, Michael Strahan and the Giants negotiated on a new contract. He said the team failed to negotiate after he turned down its first contract proposal. He accused the front office of not trying to be competitive in 2002. Four days later, running back Tiki Barber ripped him for being selfish and greedy. The two had a heated phone conversation that night, and Strahan said they no longer speak. It also surfaced in the spring that the Giants explored trading Strahan, after which he suggested that management had orchestrated the contract flap to make him look bad. The team denied that.
Few defensive ends in the NFL were more dominant than Strahan from 1997 to 2005. He was named the 2001 NFL Defensive Player of the Year and was a two-time NFC Defensive Player of the Year (in 2001 and 2003). Throughout the greater part of the 2004 season, Strahan was injured with a torn pectoral muscle, which limited him to only 4 sacks. He rebounded in 2005, returning to the Pro Bowl, with his protégé, Osi Umenyiora as the two combined for 26 sacks while anchoring the Giants' defense. Strahan was considered by many coaches, peers, and experts as the standard, and best at his position during the prime of his career (1997-2005). He was also regarded as one of if not the best defensive end ever at defending the run which made people and peers view him as a complete defensive end.
Later career
It seemed as though Strahan would retire after the 2006 season when he did not report to Giants training camp and missed the entire preseason, but the 14-year veteran opted to return for one final year. On October 23, 2006, with a sack of Drew Bledsoe in a Monday Night Football game against the Dallas Cowboys, Strahan tied Lawrence Taylor for the Giants franchise record for most career sacks with 132½. It was the last sack Strahan would get that season, as two weeks later he suffered a Lisfranc fracture against the Houston Texans and would miss the remainder of the season and the playoffs.
His 15th and final season proved to be the Giants' best record since 1990. On September 30, 2007, he sacked Donovan McNabb from the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday Night Football, increasing his career total to 133.5, setting a new franchise record. This total does not include 9½ sacks accrued by Taylor in his rookie season of 1981, the year before sacks became an official NFL statistic. On Sunday February 3, 2008, at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, Strahan had 2 tackles and 1 sack in Super Bowl XLII, in what is considered one of the biggest upsets in NFL history. Bolstered by a strong defense and unrelenting pass rush, the Giants went on to win the game 17-14, over the then-undefeated 18-0 New England Patriots, giving Strahan his first Super Bowl win as an NFL starter. His saying was "Stomp you out!"
On June 9, 2008, Strahan retired from the NFL. He told Jay Glazer of Foxsports.com "It's time, I'm done."
Strahan retired with a 2007 Super Bowl Title (his last game), 141.5 career sacks (5th all-time when he retired), 854 career tackles, 4 career interceptions, 24 forced fumbles and 3 career touchdowns in 200 games over a 15-year career (through 2007 season). He was also named to the Pro Bowl roster seven times.
On February 2, 2013, Strahan failed to get voted into The Pro Football Hall of Fame. 2013 was his first year of eligibility.
Super Bowl XLVIII, played in East Rutherford, New Jersey, was dedicated to Strahan upon his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2014. Strahan performed the ceremonial coin toss, accompanied by the other members of that year's PFHOF class. Strahan also commented on the trophy presentation for Fox, since Terry Bradshaw (who had commented on the trophy presentations for Fox's previous Super Bowl broadcasts) was mourning the death of his father. On November 3, 2014, he was presented his Hall of Fame ring at halftime of the New York Giants-Indianapolis Colts game by the Giants. In attendance were 100 former Giants players as well as former teammates of Strahan's.
Strahan's 2001 record-breaking sack
In the 2001 season, Strahan set the NFL record for sacks in a single season with 22.5, the highest tally since it was made an official statistic in 1982, breaking New York Jets' Mark Gastineau's total of 22. In the final game of the season on January 6, 2002, with Strahan coming free, Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre slid down and Strahan fell on top of Favre for an easy sack. After the play, during the ensuing celebration, many of the Giants' defensive players patted Favre on the helmet. At least one observer accused Favre of deliberately falling to ensure that Strahan would get the record. However, Packers right tackle Mark Tauscher claimed it was just a bad play and "we wanted to avoid that sack." New York Times columnist Mike Freeman wrote, "Yes, Mr. Favre, Strahan deserves the record, but please, handing it to him the way you did, as if you were throwing change into a Salvation Army bucket, is the kind of mistake Favre may never live down."

Live! with Kelly and Michael
(2012–2016)
On October 1, 2010, Strahan co-hosted Live! with Regis and Kelly with Kelly Ripa for the first time when Regis Philbin was absent for that show. Philbin left in November 2011, leaving an empty spot. After twenty guest appearances over two years, Strahan was selected as Kelly Ripa's new co-host on September 4, 2012, marking his first official day on the rechristened syndicated talk show, Live! with Kelly and Michael. Ratings instantly surged, impressively generating year-over-year time slot gains across all key demographics, towering over its nearest competition, the fourth hour of NBC's Today Show, by 87 percent. On April 19, 2016, ABC announced that Strahan would be leaving Live! with Kelly and Michael to begin working full-time on Good Morning America. Strahan won a Daytime Emmy twice for "Outstanding Talk Show Host" during his tenure with the show.
The $100,000 Pyramid
In 2016, ABC announced that Strahan would be hosting a summer revival of The $100,000 Pyramid, which would air on Sunday nights along with the Steve Harvey-hosted Celebrity Family Feud and the Alec Baldwin-hosted Match Game as part of a "Sunday Fun & Games" lineup. Strahan is on record as saying that the Pyramid was one of his favorite game shows growing up. The $100,000 Pyramidpremiered on Sunday, June 26 at 9 pm ET/8 pm CT and has been the highest-rated program of the three game shows in the Fun & Games block.
Collection by Michael Strahan
On September 8, 2015, Michael Strahan launched a men's clothing line exclusively through J. C. Penney. Included in this men's line are suits, collared shirts, belts, ties, cufflinks, suspenders, and other accessories. Strahan described the clothing line as being both stylish and affordable.
Personal life
Strahan graduated from Texas Southern University in 1993. His uncle, Arthur Strahan, played defensive lineman for the Houston Oilers (1965) and Atlanta Falcons (1968).
He was married to his first wife, Wanda Hutchins, in Germany until 1996. They have a daughter, Tanita Strahan (b. 1992), and son, Michael Anthony Strahan, Jr. (b. 1995). Strahan moved them to the U.S. and purchased a $163,000 house in the same Houston neighborhood in which his parents reside.
In 1999, he married Jean Muggli after meeting at a spa. They have twin daughters, Sophia and Isabella Strahan (b. 2004). They divorced acrimoniously in 2006. In January, 2007 Judge James B. Convery awarded Muggli $15 million in a divorce settlement in addition to $18,000 monthly child support. In her testimony, Muggli claimed that their (at the time 20-month-old) daughters liked "to be accessorized", and that "Isabella doesn't like to leave the house without a purse" and that the children's preferences justified her spending $22,500 on photo shoots, $27,000 on clothing, and $1,700 for sign language classes. With this being more than half of his $22 million in assets, Strahan appealed. In March 2007, the court ordered the Montclair, New Jersey mansion to be auctioned and the sales money split evenly with Jean; the house is valued at $3.6 million.
In August 2009, Strahan became engaged to Nicole Mitchell, Eddie Murphy's ex-wife; however, in 2014, the two broke off their engagement due to busy schedules.
In June 2011, Strahan filmed a commercial supporting legalizing same-sex marriage in New York.
He resides on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.
In April 2016, Kayla Quick was reported to be Strahan's girlfriend.

In 2002, he had a multimillion-dollar restoration and renovation done on Georgian Heights, a home built in 1906 at 99 Lloyd Avenue, Montclair, New Jersey, a red brick house with a carriage house and greenhouse that he bought in 2000 for $1.3 million. Before moving in he allowed the Junior League of Montclair-Newark to use his house as a model home for its Montclair Junior League show house charity fundraiser. From May 28–31, the League decorated the mansion, had a 'bare bones' party and a black-tie affair; they also held $25 tours to fund Junior League programs called Children At Risk and HomeCorp. Children At Risk aids children and families and HomeCorp is a housing agency that helps low income people achieve home ownership.
"Basically, we're redoing our house to let strangers walk through it for a month," Strahan said. "It's a month-long fundraiser. They'll come in and decorate, paint the walls. They'll hang the curtains, bring in furniture, light fixtures. None of it will be ours. When they're done, if we want something, we get it at cost."
In February 2008, Strahan and Giants teammate Justin Tuck teamed up with Nike to design their own exclusive pair of sneakers for ID studio in New York City. All proceeds of the sneakers were donated to Nike's Let Me Play global campaign.

227's™ Facebook Fries!¡' (aka YouTube Chili' NBA) #Nike'Spicy' LEBRON $$$Free Agent Summer 2018$$$ LeBron Chili' James! Los Angeles Chili' Lakers Trending News! NBA Mock Draft: A huge Knicks gamble #Walmart'Spicy'Tunes #Nike'Spicy'Tunes Spicy' NBA Mix!
1. Phoenix: Deandre Ayton, Arizona, C, 7-1, 250 After his workout with the Suns, the freakishly athletic center said, “I know I’m going No. 1” and shut down workouts with anyone else. If you can’t believe a 19-year-old Bahamas-born guy with one year of college behind him, whom can you trust? 2. Sacramento: Marvin Bagley III, Duke, PF, 6-11, 235 The Kings will try another Duke product who might actually play after Harry Giles sat out his rookie season. Bagley, the ACC Player of the Year, has some range and is a force at the rim. And he’s healthy. Defensively suspect but healthy. 3. Atlanta: Jaren Jackson Jr., Michigan State, PF, 6-11, 240 What do you get the team that needs just about everything? How about a shot-blocking athlete who was the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year? 4. Memphis: Luka Doncic, Slovenia, PG/SG, 6-8, 225 A do-everything, multiple-position sort, Doncic seems like a terrific complement to point guard Mike Conley and center Marc Gasol. The Grizzlies had a 21-game plunge in wins, so anyone with a pulse should help, and Doncic brings way more than that. 5. Dallas: Mohamed Bamba, Texas, C, 7-0, 225 The Mavs want anyone who can put the ball in the basket, not just hit the rim, and love Doncic. If he’s gone, Bamba, whose wingspan suggests he was a pterodactyl in a previous life, is too good to pass up. He averaged 12.9 ppg, 10.5 rpg and 3.7 bpg. 6. Orlando: Trae Young, Oklahoma, PG, 6-2, 180 The Magic have shown an astoundingly impressive ability to stink for the past seven years, failing to win 30 games five times. They hope the latest rebuild moves along behind the nation’s top scorer (27.4 points) and passer (8.7 assists). 7. Chicago: Wendell Carter, Duke, PF/C, 6-10, 260 The Bulls are likely looking for frontline help, and either Carter or Michael Porter Jr. would make sense. He’s a moose inside who can step out with some range on a creditable jumper. He’s versatile, drawing Al Horford comparisons. 8. Cleveland: Collin Sexton, Alabama, PG, 6-2, 185 Yup, a forward would make so much sense, given LeBron James’ what-the-heck-will-happen situation. But the owner tweeted about an “intriguing” prospect being worked out the day Sexton was there. He has guts and averaged 19.2 points per game. 9. Knicks: Michael Porter Jr., Missouri, SF, 6-10, 215 Mikal Bridges makes so much sense. But if Porter is here, the Knicks may gamble. He has skills, an NBA body and was a top-three, if not No. 1, pick before a back injury cost him all but three games. His Friday workout in Chicago was (at least temporarily) canceled, raising some concern. OK, lots of concern. 10. Philadelphia: Mikal Bridges, Villanova, SF, 6-7, 210 The Sixers would be so happy to get the local hero, he won’t have to check his burner phones at the door. Bridges is superb defender, shoots from 3, rebounds, does everything but create his own shot. Boston stomped Sixer wings, and he’d help. If the Knicks take him, the Sixers, who once took shot on Joel Embiid, may gamble on Porter. 11. Charlotte: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Kentucky, PG, 6-6, 180 In addition to going for “Most Complicated Name Available,” the Hornets would love to find a backup for Kemba Walker or possibly the next Kemba Walker. Gilgeous-Alexander can handle, score, pass and match up with bigger wings. SEE ALSO Miles Bridges' path to the NBA doesn't look like anyone else's Miles Bridges' path to the NBA doesn't look like anyone else's 12. L.A. Clippers: Miles Bridges, Michigan State, SF/PF, 6-6, 220 A bit of a tweener in size, this Bridges is another do-everything-well, nothing-really-great guy — which a lot of folks said last year about Donovan Mitchell. Makes a lot of sense for Clips with back-to-back picks. 13. L.A. Clippers: Lonnie Walker IV, Miami, SG, 6-4, 195 Yeah, the Clips are praying one of the top point guards falls to 12/13, but that is as doubtful as an All-New York Conference Final. Walker is a still-developing athlete with explosive-type potential. Decent, not great, 3-point range (.346). 14. Denver: Zhaire Smith, Texas Tech, SG, 6-4, 200 Smith’s wondrous athleticism that sends him scurrying all over the court seems like a Nuggets match made in heaven — or opponents’ hell in the high altitude. The potential is limitless, but the execution also can be viewed as clueless. 15. Washington: Robert Williams, Texas A&M, C, 6-9 240 Welcome to the non-lottery part of our program (please drive home safely). Lots of potential — and questions — here. There’s athleticism but motivation concerns. 16. Phoenix: Kevin Knox, Kentucky, SF/PF, 6-9, 215 Only 18, the upside project was the SEC Freshman of the Year 17. Milwaukee: Kevin Huerter, Maryland, SG, 6-7, 195 Good shooter (.503) with size, has been quick riser through pre-draft process. 18. San Antonio: Troy Brown, Oregon, SF, 6-7, 220 Spurs not picking in high 20s? They need something special, and this do-it-all guy fits, although the shot needs refining. 19. Atlanta: Jerome Robinson, Boston College, SG, 6-5, 190 Another riser in pre-draft process, overall skill set makes him appealing. 20. Minnesota: Keita Bates-Diop, Ohio State, SF/PF, 6-8, 225 Averaging 19.8 points and 8.7 rebounds, he was the Big Ten Player of the Year. 21. Utah: Dzanan Musa, Bosnia and Herzegovina, SF, 6-9, 195 Excellent size and versatility. Plus, he has improved 3-point range. 22. Chicago: Chandler Hutchison, Boise State, SG, 6-7, 200 Left combine, supposedly, with first-round promise, and many think Bulls made it. 23. Indiana: Elie Okobo, France, 6-2, 180 Lefty project with high upside, size and athleticism. A project. SEE ALSO Villanova's title game hero leaving while NBA stock is high Villanova's title game hero leaving while NBA stock is high 24. Portland: Donte DiVincenzo, Villanova, SG, 6-5, 200 Final Four Most Outstanding Player shot .481 overall, .401 from 3. 25. L.A. Lakers: De’Anthony Melton, USC, PG/SG, 6-3, 195 The combo guard is one of the better backcourt perimeter defenders available. 26. Philadelphia: Mitchell Robinson, Western Kentucky, C, 7-0, 223 He enrolled but never played in college. He withdrew from the draft combine. Confident cuss, huh? Good shot-blocker, intriguing potential. 27. Boston: Jacob Evans, Cincinnati, SG/SF, 6-5, 200 Defense is a definite strength. Good jumper but consistency a worry. 28. Golden State: Aaron Holiday, UCLA, PG, 6-0, 185 Fundamentally sound, smart player, but the drawback is his size. Hey, if he lands with the Warriors, he’ll get a ring next year. 29. Nets: Hamidou Diallo, Kentucky, SG, 6-5, 195 The Nets are feverishly trying to move up. If not, this freakishly athletic wing would make sense here. And he’s local (Queens). 30. Atlanta: Josh Okogie, Georgia Tech, SG/SF, 6-4, 210 Another upside energizer who makes sense as a third first rounder for the Hawks. CANTLON: HOCKEY NEWS AND NOTES - VOLUME 5 PART 2
Tumblr media
BY: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings HARTFORD, CT - The government says that Coronavirus is on the downswing. One thing on the upswing is news surrounding the sport of hockey. TRANSACTIONS AND MOVEMENTS Last week, the University of Vermont (HE) named their new head coach, the fifth in Catamount history, in Todd Woodcroft, who was an assistant coach with the Winnipeg Jets last season. A member of the search committee was Burlington, VT native, and former New Haven Nighthawk/Senator defenseman, Jerry Tarrant. The Associate Head Coach for the past eight years, ex-New Haven Senator, Kevin Patrick, saw his contract not renewed. Several pro signings. Greg Moro of Clarkson University (ECACHL) goes to the Stockton Heat (AHL). Westin Michaud of North Dakota (NCHC) and Biagio Lerario of Northeastern (HE) both sign with the Manitoba Moose (AHL). Will Reilly, of RPI (ECACHL), heads to the Pittsburgh Penguins (NHL). Ian Mitchell of the University of Denver (NCHC) goes to the Chicago Blackhawks (NHL). Spenser Young departs Providence College (HE) for the Milwaukee Admirals (AHL). With 20 pro signings, Hockey East leads the way with the most in new ink on contracts followed by the Big 10 with 18, NCHC has 15, and the WCHA with 12. ECACHL has 10, and the AHA has 6. The total number D-I signees sit at 82 while the total number of college signees (including Division II/III) is 102. A few more NCAA transfers include two rare of the inter-conference nature. Jonny Tychonick leaves from North Dakota (NCHC) to head to Nebraska-Omaha (NCHC) and John DeRoche of the University of Vermont (HE) makes his way to Northeastern (HE). Three regular transfers who will sit out next year include Keenan Struthers, who leaves the St. Lawrence Saints (ECACHL) to go to the Maine Black Bears (HE). Caleb Rule says goodbye to Providence College (HE) to make his way to Miami (OH) (NCHC) and John DeRoche departs the University of Vermont (HE) to go to Northeastern (HE). One grad transfer in Todd Burgess as he heads from RPI (ECACHL) to Minnesota-Mankato (NCHC). One transfer to Canadian college hockey as goalie Brad Epp goes from Nichols College (CCC) and heads to Nipissing University (OUAA). Shoulder injuries have caused Bobby Kaiser to announce his retirement from UMASS-Amherst (HE). Six more Division III players head to Europe to continue theIr hockey careers. Ryan Petti leaves New London and Connecticut College (NESCAC) for HC Meudon (France-FFFG Division-2). Joining him on the team are Blake Gober of Penn State (Big 10), Connor Hutchins of SUNY-Brockport (SUNYAC), and Lucas Debenedet of Northland College (NCHA). A pair from St. Anselm (NE-10), Mike Ferraro, and Liam O’ Sullivan, sign with Marseille (France-FFFG Division-2). David Goyette, a Sudbury Wolves first-round (11th overall) selection in the OHL Priority draft two weeks ago, will head from the Selects Academy at South Kent Prep U-15 team (Midget) back home to play Canadian major junior hockey. Last season, Goyette compiled some eye-popping stats for the midget level. In 74 games, Goyette had 57 goals, 116 assists (173 points) in the regular season, and five points in three playoff games. One college commitment in Gentry Schaumberger, who heads from Avon Old Farms (CTPREP) to Boston College (HE) in the fall. Michael Fairfax (Salisbury Prep) will skate for the Bonnyville Pontiacs (AJHL) in the fall. IN MEMORIAM If the loss of Colby Cave and Tom Webster recently weren't enough, the Hartford Whalers also lost another member of the family while another two of hockey greats have left us as well. Ginny Kelley, the wife of Jack Kelley, who was the first New England Whalers head coach and general manager for all seven seasons the team was in the WHA and the first two in NHL, passed away in Florida. In a public press release, Howard Baldwin, Sr. who founded the WHA New England Whalers and was the owner of the NHL Hartford Whalers until 1989, credited the late Mrs. Kelley with selecting the name that christened the franchise in 1972 and stayed with them until 1997. She is survived by her husband Jack, who's now 92-years-of-age, and her sons, Mark and David E. Kelley, who in their youth were the original New England Whaler stick boys. Mark has been the Director of Amateur Scouting for the Chicago Black Hawks for the last 12 years. David played three games for the AHL Binghamton Whalers and played one season for EHC Arosa (Switzerland-NLA) winning the league title and that was the extent of his hockey career. He has made his mark in the television business. He help create many memorable TV series including L.A. Law, Boston Public, The Practice, Boston Legal, Ally McBeal, and wrote a hockey movie called, Mystery Alaska with Baldwin serving as Executive Producer. A rugged defenseman, former New Haven Nighthawk, John Hughes, 66 passed away in his native Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. Toward the end of his career, Hughes played 14 games in New Haven after being acquired in a trade from the Edmonton Oilers for one time Nighthawk, Ray Markham. He played three playoff games for the 1980-‘81 Rangers. Hughes ended his pro career with the Springfield Indians in 1981-82. Hughes played just 80 NHL games with the Vancouver Canuks and the Oilers. He was selected in the 1979 expansion draft by Vancouver from Edmonton and subsequently was claimed off waivers the next year by the Oilers. Hughes played 372 WHA games with Edmonton Oilers, Cincinnati Stingers, Indianapolis Racers, Houston Aeros, and Phoenix Roadrunners tallying 778 PM which was ninth-best all-time. Hughes was a first-round pick (9th overall) of the 1974 Secret WHA Amateur Draft by Cincinnati. That draft sought to break the NHL stranglehold on future players. Three years later, the Birmingham Bulls, Ken “The Rat” Linseman, helped the league as he won a landmark ruling in a Birmingham, AL court that scrapped the entire 20-year-old draft system and created the 18-year-old draft that's still in place. The irony was that first season, Hughes was loaned to Phoenix for cash and played for the Stingers the following year. He was a part of the 1973 Memorial Cup championship Toronto Marlboros team that featured Mark Howe, former Ranger Wayne Dillon, and future NHL’ers Bruce Boudreau, Mike Palmateer, Bob Dailey, Glenn Goldup, and Peter Marrin. The same day, Pat “Whitey” Stapleton, 79, passed away as well. Stapleton was a defensive fixture for the 1960’s era Blackhawks along with Keith Magnuson and the booming slapshot of Bobby Hull. He played 635 NHL games with 337 points as a steady, reliable, two-way defenseman. Stapleton was an NHL Second All-Star team selection in 1966,1967 and 1972 and played in four All-Star games 1967, 1969, 1971 and 1972. His first two NHL seasons were with the Boston Bruins, who had claimed him in the Intra-League Draft in 1961. He was traded to Toronto along with Orland Kurtenbach for Ron Stewart on June 8, 1965. The next day he was claimed in the Intra-League Draft by Chicago. He played with the Blackhawks until 1972, and like Hull, he went to the upstart WHA to play for two years with the Chicago Cougars as their player-coach. He played a total of 372 WHA games with Cincinnati and Indianapolis amassing 239 points. Stapleton’s last hockey job was the last season of the WHA where he was the head coach of the Indianapolis Racers. In 1979-80, he briefly coached a 17-year-old named, Wayne Gretzky. He was voted the Dennis Murphy Trophy winner as WHA’s best defenseman in 1973-74 and earned his first All-Star team status. He was voted as to the Second-Team All-Star squad in 1976. He was originally selected by the Los Angeles Sharks in the WHA General Draft on February 12, 1972, but was traded to Chicago for cash in September 1973. He had a solid minor-league professional career in the old WHL (Western Hockey League). While with the Portland Buckaroos, he was named to the Second All-Star team in 1964, and the First All-Star team in 1965 and also won the Hal Laycoe award for Best Defenseman that season as well. His teammates included the verbose hockey-lifer player, coach, and scout, Tom McVie.  Also, defenseman, Dallas Smith, most known in the Bruins heyday as Bobby Orr’s defensive partner and who's last NHL season was with the Rangers, and Doug Messier, the father of NHL and Rangers great, Mark Messier. He played junior hockey with the OHA (now OHL) with the Hamilton Teepees (1958-1960). The team won the Memorial Cup in six games over the Edmonton Oil Kings with Stapleton having 14 points in 14 post-season games. He is survived by his sons, Mike who is presently a Pro Scout with the Anaheim Ducks. He played 687 NHL games with Chicago, Pittsburgh, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Atlanta, Phoenix (nee Arizona), Vancouver, and the Islanders. He also skated 250 games in the old IHL with Indianapolis and three years in the Swedish Elite League (nee Swedish Hockey League). Stapleton's son Tom had a career in Sweden with Arvika HC in the Swedish first division, where one his grandsons Carl, plays for the team now in the Swedish second division. The other grandson Nick will be with the Air Force Academy (AHA) this coming fall. Read the full article

Artificial turf making a comeback at NFL stadiums, MLB ballparks
Artificial turf is making a comeback at Major League Baseball parks and National Football League stadiums, with new high-tech artificial surfaces ending a trend toward playing fields of natural grass.
A LawnStarter review found that by the 2020 season, two NFL franchises and two baseball teams will switch from natural surfaces to artificial ones. One team, baseball’s Arizona Diamondbacks, will make the change in time for the 2019 season The other three — The NFL’s Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers, and baseball’s Texas Rangers — will go to artificial turf for their 2020 seasons.
In the NFL, the Rams and Chargers will play their 2019 seasons in separate stadiums on natural turf. For 2020, they will move in together and share a $5 billion stadium expected to open for the 2020 season. It will feature artificial turf. That will mean 15 of the NFL’s 32 teams will be playing on synthetic turf as of the 2020 season.
For 2019, here is the NFL grass versus artificial turf lineup.
NFL stadiums, teams playing on artificial turf in 2019
AT&T Stadium, Dallas Cowboys
CenturyLink Field, Seattle Seahawks
Ford Field, Detroit Lions
Gillette Stadium, New England Patriots
Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis Colts
Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta Falcons
Mercedes-Benz Superdome, New Orleans Saints
MetLife Stadium, New York Jets and Giants
New Era Field Buffalo Bills
NRG Stadium, Houston Texans
Paul Brown Stadium, Cleveland Browns

Two NFL teams —the Atlanta Falcons and the Minnesota Vikings — will be getting new artificial turf surfaces in 2019, but they are both routine replacements of existing artificial turf.
Baseball: Arizona Diamondbacks, Texas Rangers shifting to high-tech turf
Major League Baseball first rolled out its first path of plastic when the Houston Astrodome opened in 1966. Use of artificial turf peaked in the 1990s, when 10 baseball parks had it.
Its use waned because players feared injury on it, and no baseball park opened since the 1990s had it.
That streak is ending in 2019.
In Major League Baseball, the Arizona Diamondbacks will install artificial turf for the 2019 season because the team decided the Phoenix sun and heat were too much for natural grass.
“The challenges with growing natural grass in our climate and stadium have been well documented and we have considered alternate solutions for many years,” Derrick Hall, D-backs president and CEO, told Lawnstarter.com.

“During the testing, all of the players had great things to say about the playing surface,” Hall said. “Over the past couple of weeks during spring training, our players have had the chance to test out the new grass on our agility field and one of the half-fields at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick and have had great feedback.”
It will help the bottom line as well by saving 90 percent of the water that had been used to keep the natural turf growing, he said.
Their solution was B1K, a new high-tech turf developed by Shaw Sports Turf, headquartered in Calhoun, Ga. The turf is designed to mimic the bounce and feel of natural turf.
The synthetic surface has been installed already on spring training practice fields the Diamondbacks’ practice fields in Scottsdale, Ariz. The turf will be laid out at Phoenix’s Chase Field in time for the 2019 home opener April 5 against the Boston Red Sox.
Said Hall, “We decided to make this change because the technology developed by Shaw is the best in existence and will provide a consistent playing surface and benefits to our players on the field while enhancing our fan experience throughout the ballpark.”
Developing the new turf
Philipe Aldahir, director of turf research and innovation for Shaw, said the B1K turf got its name from the baseball term “Batting 1.000” and was more than two years in development.
One key ingredient: coconut fibers. Traditional artificial turf has an understory of rubber, which affects the bounce of the ball and the spring of the athletes. Shaw set out to match natural turf’s playing surface using, among other tools, a baseball launcher. “We set the speed and angle and shot out baseballs,” he said. They recorded the results, brought them back into the lab, and went to work trying to reproduce the natural bounce.
Like Thomas Edison going through hundreds of materials before finding the right light bulb filament, Shaw’s researchers went through hundreds of materials before the coconut eureka moment.
The result was a next-generation synthetic turf that he hopes will remove the “stigma” attached to playing on artificial turf.

Texas Rangers to follow suit in 2020
In Arlington, Texas, home of the Texas Rangers, Shaw’s B1K turf will be installed when the team’s new Globe Life Field opens for the 2020 season. The new, retractable-roof ballpark will replace Arlington Stadium, the open-air, naturally turfed home of the Rangers since the team moved there in 1971.
“From our first visit with the staff at Shaw Sports Turf, we were clear that a synthetic grass surface for Globe Life Field would only be a consideration if it could deliver the best surface in Major League Baseball and address the concerns we had related to impact on the players,” said Rob Matwick, Rangers Executive Vice President of Business Operations, in a Feb. 1, 2019 news release. “Months of detailed research that included extensive input from our Baseball Operations group from both a health and performance aspect have resulted in this decision.”
When the Rangers make their move, it will double the number of MLB teams playing on turf to four. The two existing baseball parks with synthetic playing fields are Tropicana Field in Tampa and Rogers Centre in Toronto, homes of the Rays and the Blue Jays.

First gold glove award and november
the final quarter, the game went back-and-forth. That’s why one of the first things I’m planning to do is to go to the doctor … THE EAGLES would really like to get their projected starting offensive line off the screen they’re projecting it upon and onto the field, but that goal has proved elusive. I was a 5- EMBA prospect, joked , a 2014 graduate who kidded that recruiters told him, I’ve seen the way you can handle that pencil. of the players at Globe were broke, and finding a next meal wasn’t always certain. Bergeron, Krejci, Acciari and Backes scored for the Bruins, who moved three points ahead of idle Tampa Bay for the second Eastern Conference wild card with six remaining. He is always calm and nothing seems to faze him; he is thoroughly prepared and highly approachable. Definitely take at least one class from him. Upton, Cameron Maybin and Martinez all hit home runs Friday night. You’ve never been ready for some football.,author_name:bleacherreport.com,analytics:,amp_url:null,ad_stitched_url:http: ondemand hls content 1117 vid 17439 15 TO WATCH/5 SPORTS TECH/POWER OF SPORTS 5: RICK HORROW’S TOP SPORTS/BIZ/TECH/PHILANTHROPY ISSUES FOR THE WEEK OF JUNE 4
with Jamie Swimmer & Jesse Leeds Grant
The revenue the Golden Knights have pumped into the NHL will "help deliver the largest salary cap increase" since 2014. According to TSN.ca., NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said that the current projection for the 2018-2019 salary cap upper limit "remains between" $78-82 million. Even if the NHL and NHLPA "decide not to enact an inflator, that means the salary cap will rise" at least $3 million from this season’s $75 million. The cap has risen an average of $2 million over "each of the last three summers, with revenue remaining mostly flat." League-wide revenue is approaching $5 billion per season, and the success of not just the Golden Knights, but "also a 31st team in general, has helped." Said Daly, “There’s a lot of revenue certainly generated by the Las Vegas franchise. Certainly on their jersey sales and licensed merchandise, it’s off the charts…It’s an amazing story in every category.” Meanwhile, Game 1 of the 2018 Stanley Cup Finals between the Capitols and Golden Knights handed NBC Sports an average of 5.279 million viewers across NBC, the NBC Sports app, and NBCSports.com, making it the most-watched Game 1 in three years. Overall, the 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs remain the most-watched in 21 years, and are on track to be the highest-revenue series of the current era as well.
This year’s NBA Playoffs have been incredibly successful for the league from a viewership standpoint thus far, and the Finals appear to be no different. According to SportsBusiness Journal, as LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers continue their battle against Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson, and the Golden State Warriors for the fourth year in a row, the NBA is able to celebrate its best playoff viewership since 2012. Through the conference finals, TNT, ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, and NBA TV averaged 4.6 million viewers for the 77 telecasts, coming in just short of the 4.9 million average six years ago. The NBA Playoffs have also “won the night on cable TV nearly 92% of the time (34 of 37 nights)” this year. Two of the most-watched contests were the Game 7 matchups in both Eastern and Western Conferences, which averaged just under 9 million viewers apiece. The Warriors-Rockets Game 7 ultimately finished with 14.8 million viewers, “marking the second-best figure for an NBA game in cable TV history.” Starting with a thrilling Game 1 in Oakland, won by the Warriors, this year’s Finals could produce higher ratings than even initially expected.
As the French Open enters its second week, Amazon is set to agree to a two-year deal for the exclusive global broadcast rights to the Laver Cup. Sources told the Australian Financial Review that the agreement will allow the tech giant to show the three-day international team tennis tournament on its Prime Video subscription service. Plans for associated content, including behind-the-scenes videos and a related mini-series, will reportedly also be included. The Laver Cup, which launched last year, is named after Australian tennis icon Rod Laver. It is owned and operated by Team8, the management company set up by Roger Federer and his long-time agent Tony Godsick, in conjunction with Tennis Australia and the USTA. In a format reminiscent of golf’s Ryder Cup, the competition pits ‘Team World’ against ‘Team Europe’, who were captained last year by John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg respectively. This year's Laver Cup is due to be held in Chicago in September. News of the latest deal comes as Amazon continues to expand its portfolio of tennis broadcast rights. Last year, it outbid Sky Sports for rights to the ATP World Tour in the UK, while it also won rights to the U.S. Open in that market for the next five years.
Minor League Baseball has partnered with EVERFI to bring a summer learning course to rising fifth grade students in key markets. The digital course, Summer Slugger, teaches students literacy and math skills through the game of baseball. Multiple MiLB clubs will participate in the pilot, which will reach thousands of students including the Las Vegas 51s, the Richmond Flying Squirrels, the Charlotte Knights, the Lexington Legends, the Charleston RiverDogs, and the Omaha Storm Chasers. On May 22, the Omaha Storm Chasers hosted a program launch event at Gateway Elementary School with 240 students. The Las Vegas 51s also hosted a launch event on May 10 at Eva G. Simmons Elementary School, with 270 students. Minor league baseball has always been known for its innovation, creativity, and family-friendly atmosphere. The deal with EVERFI takes that mindset from the ballpark to the classroom, aided by an equally creative, innovative partner.
As the U.S. Open prepares to tee off at Shinnecock next week, Tagmarshal, the golf course intelligence and pace-of-play system, is operational at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club. Pinehurst is a former U.S. Open host, host of the 2019 U.S. Amateur Championship, and one of Golf Digest’s top-five courses worldwide. With more single golf championships than any other site in America and nine challenging golf courses, Pinehurst will enhance its already renowned player experience by using Tagmarshal’s sophisticated geo-tagging and pace algorithm software. Partnering with Tagmarshal gives courses proven operational efficiencies, while superintendents use Tagmarshal data to better manage pin placements, wear patterns, and hole set-ups. Equipped with these vital statistics, some courses can expect to see a 15-17 minute decrease for each round and increased maintenance efficiency. Recent system installments across the country have led to 70% of rounds being played on pace or within five minutes of target goal times. Top-ranked courses trusting Tagmarshal include Carnoustie (The 2018 Open Championship), The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort (2021 PGA Championship), Whistling Straits, and more. The amount of time it takes to play a round of golf is one of the sport’s major deterrents, so any innovation that leads to quicker play will only benefit the industry as a whole.
The NFL has repeatedly stated its intent to stay out of politics, though President Trump’s criticism of players protesting the national anthem this season “pushed the league to shift its stance” on the issue. According to the Wall Street Journal, President Trump’s repeated and direct criticism of NFL players kneeling during the national anthem ultimately resulted in team owners making private “political calculations” in response to the president’s strong words. “This is a very winning, strong issue for me,” Trump told Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones last year. “Tell everybody, you can’t win this one. This one lifts me.” Multiple owners, including Miami Dolphins Owner Stephen Ross, cited their support for the players up until Trump made his comments. “He changed the dialogue,” said Ross. The NFL pushed back against Trump’s comments last season, but the decision to change the policy this year came from the owners themselves – most of whom lean conservative and many of whom have backed Trump with campaign contributions.
The NFL stadium being built in Los Angeles could find its way into the regular rotation of Final Four hosts, much to the dismay of Phoenix. According to the Arizona Republic, the Chargers and Rams’ new stadium, which is expected to cost as much as $4.963 billion, is becoming an “attractive option” for one of the country’s biggest annual sporting events. Los Angeles is currently one of seven cities bidding to land a Final Four over a four-year span, competing against Phoenix, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Detroit, and Indianapolis. “There is interest in Los Angeles,” said NCAA Men’s Basketball Committee member Tom Burnett. “And as I’ve told the others, we have a math issue here. There’s a presumption that Indianapolis will get one of those because of their NCAA arrangement, so (it could be) six for three years.” This past year’s Final Four in San Antonio delivered an economic impact of $185 million, and the 2017 rendition in Phoenix turned out an impressive $324.5 million positive impact. With the warm Los Angeles weather and a state-of-the-art stadium in the works, L.A. sits as a serious contender to land a Final Four in the near future.
The Supreme Court’s recent decision to legalize sports betting across all 50 states will impact more than professional sports leagues – it will also have a direct effect on college athletics. According to SportsDay, Big 12 presidents and athletic directors recently got a crash course on the ruling and how it will play out on a collegiate level. With a conference as geographically spread out as the Big 12, different universities will be forced to react in different ways to the ruling depending on how their respective states elect to handle the issue. “Well, in all frankness, I wish I knew how it was going to affect the landscape,” said Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby. “You just look at our footprint. We have five different states that are going to have five different sets of rules and laws.” Just as multiple professional leagues have already noted, universities are beginning to talk about pushing for an “integrity fee,” hoping that the fee would be put toward “enhanced compliance and gambling education.” With college athletic department funding mostly down at all but the power conferences top-tier schools, it goes unsaid that sports gambling integrity fees could also put some much-needed revenue into AD coffers.
A new economic impact report claims that Super Bowl LII at U.S. Bank Stadium in downtown Minneapolis brought in “net new spending” of $370 million to the Twin Cities. According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, the Super Bowl celebration that lasted from January 26-February 4 in Minnesota delivered on its promised economic impact, coming in $50 million over initial pre-event projections. The $370 million can largely be attributed to the $179 million spent by broadcast and event planners – the most ever for a Super Bowl. The ultimate number was reached “after subtracting about $80 million for displaced tourism (people who were kept away from the area by the event).” The number, which is still being disputed by a few parties, confirms that Minnesota – Minneapolis and St. Paul specifically – know how to host mega sporting events successfully and profitably, boding well for the 2019 Final Four also being held at U.S. Bank Stadium.
The Milwaukee Bucks are on the verge of signing a naming rights partner for their new $524 million downtown arena. According to SportsBusiness Journal, the Bucks are working to finalize the deal with Fiserv, a Wisconsin-based financial tech firm, that could be worth as much as $6 million per year for 20 years. If agreed up by both parties, the Bucks’ new home could become either Fiserv Arena or the Fiserv Center, though no ultimate ruling has been made public yet. The Bucks had initially been looking for more money in their search for a suitable naming rights partner, prompting them to walk “away from the same deal with similar terms within the past year.” “We certainly have been in negotiations with three or four different entities over the last year,” said Bucks President Peter Feigin. The new 17,500-seat arena will host both the Bucks and Marquette University upon opening. Per NBA tradition, there’s likely also an NBA All-Star Game in the future for the Bucks’ new house – February Wisconsin weather notwithstanding.
FC Cincinnati has officially been unveiled as Major League Soccer’s 26th franchise. According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, the club will begin play in the top flight of American soccer in 2019, marking a significant milestone for a franchise that only joined the USL in 2016. In 16 home games last season at Nippert Stadium, the team averaged an impressive 21,000 fans while also “beating two MLS clubs in the U.S. Open Cup in front of 30,000-plus fans.” Putting that attendance figure into perspective, of the 22 MLS teams in the league last year, only seven had a higher average attendance over the course of the season. A 21,000-seat soccer-specific stadium is currently planned to open for the 2021 season, which should be at capacity each game based on the club’s current trajectory. FC Cincinnati will have to pay a $150 million expansion fee ahead of joining the league, marking a 15-fold hike in price from the $10 million that Toronto FC paid to join MLS only 10 years ago.
Detroit has officially been announced as the host of a new PGA Tour event beginning in June, 2019. According to the Detroit News, Quicken Loans, the title sponsor for the event, helped deliver the news, making the Michigan city a PGA Tour event destination “for the first time ever.” Detroit Golf Club is expected to host the new event, which will replace The National on the PGA Tour’s schedule. Quicken Loans was The National’s title sponsor from 2014-2017, meaning that the Detroit-based company will be able to leverage its extensive presence across its hometown to promote the event. Quicken Loans officials already said that they are “planning for a multi-week event, complete with concerts and other attractions, with the golf tournament as the centerpiece.” The Buick Open hosted in Grand Blanc back in 2009 was the most recent PGA Tour event held in the state of Michigan, so this news comes as a huge positive for the rebuilding city and its state.
The battle between North America and Morocco for hosting rights to the 2026 World Cup is heating up just ahead of the June 13 decision. According to Reuters, the joint bid between the United States, Canada, and Mexico is working relentlessly to fend off Morocco, a “feisty rival” that poses a significant threat due to its African support base. Of the 211 total votes that will be cast by each country’s FA, 54 of those votes come from Africa, Morocco’s home. Because of that, both bids have made the African continent their “primary focus” over the past week or two, with the joint bid trying to steal a few African votes away from Morocco. Liberia has already voiced its support for the North American bid, and South Africa’s government has urged its FA to vote that way as well, citing its “strained relations” with the Moroccan government. The North American bid is poised to generate more than $5 billion in short-term economic activity, per a report from BCG, with individual cities expecting approximately $160-620 million each in incremental economic activity. While these numbers dwarf those expected out of Morocco, FIFA has shown its new desire to factor in more than money when making these decisions. Whichever way the vote falls on June 13, expect continued debate and outcry about it to be part of the soundtrack of the imminent World Cup in Russia.
As the 2018 World Cup in Russia quickly approaches, now less than two weeks away, FIFA remains under heavy scrutiny for awarding Qatar the right to host the 2022 event. According to the London Daily Mail, a watchdog organization recently uncovered more evidence of corruption directly relating to Qatar’s successful bid back in 2010. The Foundation of Sports Integrity said that Qatar’s vote victory was “completely illegitimate” as part of a new investigation. Evidence cites that Qatar paid “millions to members of FIFA’s executive committee as they considered which country would be awarded the tournament.” One confirmed “mystery payment” ahead of the 2010 vote was £3.6 million deposited into Argentine FIFA executive Julio Grondona’s Swiss bank account; Qatar also allegedly paid off a £50 million debt owed by the Argentine FA. Qatar beat out the United States, South Korea, Japan, and Australia to become the smallest nation by area ever to have been awarded a FIFA World Cup, and while bribery has long been alleged as the reason why, as evidence piles up it is quickly morphing from whisper to fact.
Despite being met by some opposition at the onset, Jacksonville Jaguars Owner Shahid Khan’s $1.19 billion bid to buy Wembley Stadium is pushing forward. According to the London Times, there was no “outright opposition” among FA councilors at a recent meeting to discuss the potential sale. English FA CEO Martin Glenn laid out an ambitious vision to the councilors were the sale to go through, as it could result in upwards of $1.3 billion being put into grassroots soccer across the UK by 2030. Also to ease the emotions of the councilors and preserve the sanctity of the historic venue, Glenn confirmed that “any new owner would have to agree to numerous projections until 2057, such as not selling naming rights for the stadium and ensuring the Royal Box remains in place.” “Receiving an offer to sell Wembley Stadium is not a betrayal,” said Glenn of the deal. “It is not selling the soul of the game…What we have in front of us is simply an opportunity.” Expect Khan to prevail in the purchase. But don’t expect him to be moving the Jaguars to London anytime soon.

(The Sports Xchange) – Highlights of Sunday’s National Football League games:
Seahawks 24, Eagles 10
Russell Wilson threw three touchdown passes, and the Seattle defense held the league’s No. 1 offense to a season low in points as the Seahawks beat the Philadelphia Eagles 24-10 on Sunday night.
The Seahawks (8-4) ended the Eagles’ winning streak at nine games and put themselves back into playoff position, thanks to the Atlanta Falcons’ loss to the Minnesota Vikings earlier in the day. The Eagles (10-2) dropped into a dead heat with the Vikings (10-2) for the top seed in the NFC.
Wilson outdueled Carson Wentz, who had his streak of games with multiple touchdown passes stopped at seven. Wentz completed 29 of 45 throws for 348 yards, with one touchdown and one interception. Wilson hit 20 of 31 for 227 yards and threw scoring passes to Jimmy Graham, Tyler Lockett and J.D. McKissic.
Patriots 23, Bills 3
Tom Brady went 21-of-30 passing for 258 yards en route to his 27th career victory over Buffalo as New England won its eighth straight game.
Brady broke Brett Favre’s NFL record for most wins against a single opponent.
The Patriots (10-2) reached double-digit victories for the 15th straight season while the Bills fell to 6-6.
New England’s Rex Burkhead rushed for 78 yards and two touchdowns and Dion Lewis added 92 yards. Tight end Rob Gronkowski, whose late hit in the fourth quarter may net him a fine or suspension, caught nine passes for 147 yards.
Vikings 14, Falcons 9
Minnesota shut down Atlanta’s Julio Jones and stretched their winning streak to eight games.
Case Keenum threw two short touchdown passes and the Vikings (10-2) held the Falcons (7-5) to three field goals.
Keenum completed 25-of-30 passes for 227 yards as the Vikings all but locked up first place in the NFC North.
Jones had just two catches for 24 yards.
Saints 31, Panthers 21
Rookie running back Alvin Kamara had 126 offensive yards and scored two touchdowns to power New Orleans past Carolina.
The win lifted the Saints into sole possession of first place in the NFC South.
In sweeping the season series with the Panthers (8-4), the 9-3 Saints took a one-game lead in the division, using a powerful running game to gain 148 yards against the league’s third-best rushing defense.
The Panthers had won four straight and seven of their last eight games.
Rams 32, Cardinals 16
Jared Goff passed for two touchdowns and linebacker Alec Ogletree returned an interception for a score in Los Angeles’ win at Arizona.
With their sixth victory in seven games, the Rams (9-3) strengthened their hold on first place in the NFC West and all but assured the Cardinals (5-7) of missing the playoffs for a second consecutive season.
Dolphins 35, Broncos 9
Miami’s swarming defense held Denver out of the end zone and scored twice as the Dolphins (5-7) snapped a five-game losing streak.
Denver (3-9) dropped its eighth straight contest and hasn’t been victorious since a home win over Oakland on Oct. 1.

New San Diego kicker Travis Coons tied a career high with four field goals, and Keenan Allen added a touchdown catch in the victory over winless Cleveland.
The Chargers (6-6), tied for first in the NFC West, won for the sixth time in eight games after an 0-4 start.
