Chapter Fifteen: My Best Friend

Bruce graduated early the following year and started attending Gotham University in the spring of what would’ve been his junior year in high school. He got a part-time job with Wayne Foundations as his mother’s personal assistant and helped out at Ted’s gym between sessions while Harvey immersed himself in honors classes, a part-time job in the Wayne Foundations’ cafe, and volunteer work for Thomas’ mayoral campaign. The boys shifted into their separate paths, only coming together at mealtime. And with the election and Martha’s spring gala around the corner, everyone worked through meals like their lives depended on it. 

Mornings were even worse. Everyone buzzed upstairs and downstairs and through the hallways, brushing past each other and giving short greetings. “Mom! I’ll be late for the gala next Saturday! I have a thing, but I’ll be there around nine-ish!” Bruce shouted from the bottom of the stairs as he put his jacket on. 

“Okay, lovey! Am I still gonna get my dance before midnight?” Martha replied as she ran down the stairs in her heels. “How do I look?” 

“Yes ma’am… And you’re a picture of loveliness as always, Mom,” Bruce whispered as he kissed her cheek, “I gotta go. I’m running late for class. I love you.” 

“I love you too, Bruce. Don’t drive too fast,” Martha waved as she watched Bruce speed past her out the door. 

Harvey stepped out of the kitchen with a bagel in one hand and a ginger ale in the other. “Mr. Wayne! I’ll pick up your blue suit and brown jacket from the cleaners after school! And remember that I’ll be at the clinic at noon with a few kids from school to interview you for the school paper! If you’re not available, I’ll—!” 

Thomas ran into Harvey and held his shoulders. “I carved out an hour and a half for you kids. I didn’t forget. Hey, you look kind of pale, Harv. Maybe you should skip your first class and—.” 

“Don’t have time, Mr. W., but I might stop by the clinic next week,” Harvey replied. Thomas stopped him and checked his lymph nodes. “Mr. Wayne, I’m fine. If I don’t go soon—.”

Thomas took a tiny flashlight out of his pocket and shined it in Harvey’s eyes. Harvey took Thomas’ wrist and winced. “Your pupils are uneven—.” 

“I’ve got a little migraine, Mr. Wayne. I’m fine, though. I gotta go,” Harvey replied before slipping past Thomas and heading for the garage.

Bruce ran into Harvey on the way home from the gym, and he noticed Harvey was trying to obscure his face as he ran from the garage to the house. Bruce followed him. “Harvey!” Bruce shouted as he chased him to the living room and grabbed his arm. Blood gushed from Harvey’s nose through his hands, and Bruce gasped. “Harvey, jeez! I should get Dad—.”

“He’ll take me off the team—.” 

Bruce shook his head and took off his outer t-shirt to hold against Harvey’s face. “Dad!” Bruce shouted. “Dad would never. He might make you take a few days from school and a night or two off work—.”

“I can’t afford it,” Harvey whispered.

Bruce froze. “What do you mean?” Bruce asked. 

“I’ve applied for six scholarships, Bruce. I’m screwed if I don’t—.” 

“My parents will—.”

“I don’t want their help. Your parents have done way too much for me already. I want to prove to your mom and dad that I’m a self-made man… Or at least I could be,” Harvey replied. 

“But that’s crazy—.” 

“Bruce, if you get your parents involved in paying for my college, I’ll never forgive you,” Harvey whispered through his teeth. 

Bruce sighed. “Fine… But you’re killing yourself for no reason, Harv—.”

Thomas rushed toward Harvey and Bruce. “Harvey, what happened?” Thomas asked as he took Harvey to his downstairs office.

Harvey slept through his first two periods at school, and he woke up to Bruce sitting at Harvey’s desk, typing a paper. “What are you doing?” Harvey asked. 

“Typing your essay that you wrote. Dad wants you to stay in bed and get some rest,” Bruce whispered, “So, I’m really just here to babysit you. My professor doesn’t mind. I told her I had a family emergency, and I turned in all my assignments for the week early anyway.” 

“Bruce, can I ask you something?” Harvey questioned.

“You can ask me anything,” Bruce answered without turning around. 

Harvey laid back down and quietly watched Bruce work. “You can have and do anything you want… Why do you work so hard? You’re a chronic overachiever but everything you could ever dream of is already in your hands,” Harvey replied. 

“You wanna know the truth? After my parents got shot in that alley, all I wanted was for my parents to be okay. I just wanted them to live… And everything else I’ve had outside of that doesn’t feel—. I don’t deserve any of it. Until I can help someone or save someone from something like that, my place in this world feels selfish. 

“My parents deserve to live, but I—. Do I?” Bruce asked. 

Harvey frowned. “You don’t think you’ve saved me?” Harvey asked. “If I hadn’t met you when I did, I would’ve lost my mind by now. No one’s like you, Bruce. You’re always looking out for me even when I don’t want you to. You’re the most unselfish person I know… And I think you’d be that way even if you weren’t rich. You’d still try to give people the shirt off your back if that was all you had. I don’t think you’re selfish at all.” 

“I feel that way. I can never repay the world for the circumstances that allowed my parents to survive,” Bruce whispered, “And I didn’t save you. You’re important to me… You make my life better. I need you more than you need me.”

“I don’t know how you could say that. I literally live in your house—.”

“I hate it when you’re not here. Even if I’m not home, I like knowing that you’ll be here when I get back. That when you go to sleep you’re no farther than the two doors between us,” Bruce replied. 

“How long have you been awake?” Harvey asked, noticing the emotionless tone of Bruce’s voice. 

Bruce turned to him. “I didn’t go to sleep last night. I wanted to make sure you were okay,” Bruce replied, “Dad said you’re overworked, and it caused your blood pressure to spike. So, I’ve been going through your to-do list… And I’m more than halfway done.”

“Bruce, I could’ve—.”

“You started most of these things yourself. Dad’s dry cleaning was in the car already, I mailed the letters in your car, picked up your stuff at the store, returned your library books, and took your uniform to the dry cleaners… Oh, and I got the blood out of your seat with Alfred’s help,” Bruce interrupted before turning back to the computer. 

“Thanks, Bruce,” Harvey whispered, “I’ve been a jerk to you these past few weeks. Why are you being so nice to me?”

“You’re my best friend,” Bruce answered matter-of-factly. And it hit Harvey’s heart. Bruce genuinely cared about him even when things weren’t going well between them, and it made Harvey fall deeper in love with him. He let out an anguished sigh as he pulled the blankets over his face. “Said something, Harv?”

“Nope,” Harvey mumbled as he hid his rosy-cheeked expression.

maybe even some epilogue chapters for all of the choices. like for the first two it’s y/n getting spooned/spooning the other as they talk about what would’ve happened i’d they didn’t escape (bc y/n was smart and made the one who got caught walk in front) and the remaining sibling doesn’t know that y/n still works for the gov’t.. for the third one maybe y/n moves in w them and they’re all poly now? dunno. still thinking. and for the last choice maybe y/n felt guilty and went to visit them in prison to confess but they’re both extremely pissed

okay the cross tagging in the tua fandom has gotten way out of hand. i’m just really frustrated right now because this is ridiculous. if you want someone to see your post, tag it correctly. don’t add a bunch of random fandom related tags about characters that aren’t even mentioned just so you can get more notes.

there is actually a Reason for this alright? it’s not just rules for the sake of rules. when you tag in an unrelated tag, it clogs it up with posts that aren’t related (stay w me here). so if someone’s looking through their favorite character’s tag they don’t want to see a random incorrect quote in the general fandom NOT EVEN MENTIONING THE CHARACTER. when it gets really intense, it’s difficult to even find posts that mention the character (cough cough the ben hargreeves tag cough cough)

tagging is an organization system that helps people find stuff. you are making it ineffective and frustrating to use by crosstagging. please stop.

pls do not:

-tag “character a” in a post about “character b” and “character c” because they are all in the same show/book/video game etc

-tag an incorrect quotes post with every character in the fandom. (you know who you are. yes i’m targeting iq acc’s because they do this A LOT but lots of ppl do it!!)

-tag a general post about tua with the characters (this one has nuance, like many other things in the world. just use your best judgement like i trust you!!!)

also usually i wouldn’t tag a fandom post about fictional characters with the actors that play them??? like it would have to be a v specific situation so idk why people do this. you are not writing analysis of emmy raver lampman?? hello??

anyway lmk if you have any more tips. i’m not the tagging police (ACAB) so take everything i say with a grain of salt because i am not the ruler of the tua fandom or tumblr! i’m just seeing a problem in this community that i know other people are bothered by. alr live your life just be considerate of other ppl while ur doing ur thing 👍

SO i used to respond pretty frequently but then i spent a while writing in a very very tiny fandom where every single comment was cherished & i got out of the habit of replying bcos in my mind once i've replied to a comment it's 'finished' so living them unreplied to meant i could enjoy them for longer. and then i got out of the habit!! these days i tend to only reply if i have something to say but i am grateful for all of them <3

What is a fic you wrote with the angstiest ending

im not gonna link any of them but in my Merlin days i did write multiple fics about my OT3 killing each other. im fine thank you for asking.

huh i feel like this is harder to measure than the above?? hmmm. scrolling back through my recent-ish works, it isn't kind is pretty unabashedly fluffy.

these days not so often!! have ended up in a string of found family type fandoms. but yeah i got uhh 65 fics rated E on the ao3. most of them are m/m occasional f/f or f/m.

im more into fusions which is a different thing! but have on occasion written crossovers.

yeah actually, had a fic taken once by someone who was habitually translating fics into a different language & posting them without acknowledging the original. i think they got reported but i don't really remember who it shook out!

yeah quite a lot of times! u can see translations of my fics on ao3 here. disproportionately russian? i assume there's just a lot of russian fic translators out there!

im monolingual so i don't think i'd do this without assistance from a native speaker. i've actually published (like, professionally) a piece of fiction w some dialogue in another language and to my eternal gratitude some of my tumblr followers assisted me with the translation <3

1,060,055, and I'm still SUPER proud of hitting a million words. don't think I'm ever gonna write as much again as I did in 2022 (how did I write almost 400k in a year????) but apparently I'm over 100k for this year so. happy with that even though I haven't written nearly as much as I'd like due to like, general life stuff

What is a fic you wrote with the angstiest ending

oughfkdjg this is tough. I do think if only we could have been brave on time was pretty angsty, I don't usually write fics that toy so much with major character death.

there's a few others but the first one that jumped out at me while scrolling through my fics was i'm trying to reach you (before all the ghosts do). minor character/oc death this time but like. the whole fic was very much born out of the image of its angsty ending, so.

What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

hm I mean I do write a lot of angstless fluff!! so like, any of those. but I'm gonna go with litany for a reunion, because so much of it is angsty that I think the ending seems happier because of it.

not yet! but this fandom is pretty chill so.

I am very very sex-repulsed ace it would not be a good time for anybody <3

Do you write crossovers?

not in the sense of like, bringing characters from one fandom into another. if I had the stamina/confidence to do proper longfics I'd absolutely do more aus, some of which are inspired by other media (if you guys could see the fairytale aus that live in my head.), and I /do/ have a daemon au.

the only crossover I've really done is Lifeboat, which is like. still a concept I enjoy. ark/its lore is something so close to my heart, so it was a lot of fun to fuse it with dr who. plus I just like imagining that victoria's dad was surrounded by so so so many unhinged mad scientists. & I also find it very very very funny that the ark character in question is now voiced by david tennant

not that I'm aware of! again like. small and chill fandom. who's going to be doing that.

no, and I don't think I'd want to - I'm a little bit too precious/sensitive about my writing to even have like, a beta reader or anything. I don't think I'd do well trying to co-write with someone. the closest I've come is kind of co-plotting out fics with other people (the plot of the selkie au is as much @ettelwenailinon's brainchild as mine <333)

What’s your all-time favorite ship?

I have been so deeply invested in two/jamie for so long that I can no longer untangle it from myself.

What’s a wip you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

the fic I want to write most is a super comprehensive multichapter spanning about two years between jamie getting dropped off at culloden after the war games and two coming to pick him up again for 6b. I have a general sweep of the arc, some summary notes, and pages and pages of historical notes for it. unfortunately I don't think I'm ever going to feel like I've done enough historical research to justify writing it, even if I do somehow magically get myself to buck up into writing proper longfic.

What are your writing strengths?

hm idk! I'm quite pleased with some of my prose/descriptions sometimes. & I've had a few comments over the years saying I'm good at characterisation, which is always nice to hear.

I never really know what's good about my writing tho. not out of any sense of inferiority or false modesty or anything, I just. don't think that deeply about writing in general. the words come out & if I like them I like them

What are your writing weaknesses?

^^^ as I am always saying I wish I could break down the mental block that's stopping me from writing longfic

kinda related but like. I'm definitely a perfectionist and that can paralyse me sometimes when I'm trying to write a first draft.

Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

I need to do it more often!!

my absolute dream would be to be able to translate all my fics into gàidhlig tbh. but I love love love giving jamie gàidhlig dialogue, or even just dropping little turns of phrase into his english dialogue, stuff like that. I definitely feel like there's some space between how I write/characterise jamie and how he is on screen, but to some degree that's a conscious decision. I'm always trying to strike a balance between like, writing him in character and writing him in a way that feels authentic to his time and cultural background. but dropping in bits of gàidhlig is a fun way of doing that (and also of getting myself to write in the language which is definitely good practice)

First fandom you wrote for?

hm I mean technically ig it was the saddle club. I was like 3 years old and I wrote a 'book' about the horses.

in terms of like, actively writing fic with the conscious knowledge of what fic was, probably fic about warrior cats ocs when I was about 11/12.

Favorite fic you’ve written?

old ghost's waltz, always. I loved how it came together, it was my first real dip into doing super historical jamie fic & a sort of replacement for the post-war games longfic I may never write, and it was a response to the phantom piper, which drives me absolutely insane in both good and bad ways. like it gave me so many ideas but god I could fix her.

unsorted is a very solid second though. it had all the historical fic joy of old ghost's waltz (even more so in some parts - the scene with jamie and connie might be my favourite scene I've ever written), and it was just. so cathartic to write as an expression of a headcanon I'd kind of hidden for so many years bc I was worried it wouldn't be well-received. it's my favourite fic to get comments on just because it always feels like a relief to see people enjoying it.

5. Do you respond to comments?

I try to unless the comment is kinda unhinged. I once had a really nice comment that switched gears midway thru to start in on a campaign to save the show my fic was based on getting nasty abt the network that canceled it and it just went off the rails, so in my head I was like thank u for that nice beginning but I'm just gonna walk slowly backwards away from this.

6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Even my saddest fics have some sort of silver lining. I don't like leaving my characters suffering w/o any hope. So probably the AU I wrote to my own otgw canon where I kill Beatrice off (Not) A Happy Story is the angstiest, but there's some hope by the end.

idk I'm kind of partial to the ending of my iasip fic My Fair Charlie bc these are two characters who have been thru a lot in their lives and the scene in Charlie's room where he shows Dee his memory box is just sorta cute and innocent and gives me feelings.

In the fandom that shall not be named, I got some. I never got any hate when I originally wrote for Twilight on ff.net but when I updated my fic from there to AO3 I got some.

Not really no. A handful of times and it's just sorta okay. I'm more of a write an intense lead-up and then fade to black writer. I'll leave the smut to ppl who can actually write it well (ie not me).

Yes! It was so weird. There was another Twilight fic that I was writing that I had let sit for a few years and then someone messaged me that it had been stolen, the names changed and put on some anime fanfic website. The person knew bc the name Jasper kept popping up in that person's fic when there was no character named Jasper. They thought that was weird so they googled a portion of the fic and mine came up. Anways, I messaged the site, but who knows if they did anything abt it and anyway, I took that particular fic down since I'm not in the fandom anymore and won't ever finish it.

My Twilight fic 'Change Heartache Into Courage' has been translated a few times.

I have a 38k 'Dragon Prince' fic that's been sitting since 2021. I'm not in the fandom anymore and got rid of Netflix, so even if I wanted to write my ability to watch the show is hindered. Still, I like the character development I wrote and maybe one day in the future I'll work on it again, but as of now, it's probably going to sit collecting dust for a v long time.

I tried to write at discord but I admit it causes me some kind of anxiety as for some reason my mind interprets discord as something to be replied as soon as seen. Okay I wrote up this whole thing that had no small amount of shade but then I looked back and realized there was a better response, and that is:

“Okay, and?”

So what if Rebecca jumped to the next close opportunity to get away from Josh? Does the fact she started a relationship with Greg potentially not with the purest of intentions mean she’s incapable of developing genuine romantic feelings for him? Couldn’t, perhaps, the situation be a lot more nuanced than that, and perhaps the reason she went to Greg in S1 was, yes, because she was realizing what she had with Josh was toxic and she wanted something different, and remembered back to their failed date at the taco festival, and how they joked and danced and laughed and, yes, had some shit come up, but were able to work through it, and thought maybe that would be the kind of thing she was craving? Hell, maybe she just wanted three straight days of passionate sex and word games with someone she enjoyed being with. What’s wrong with that? Does that mean that’s all there is and all there will ever be? That how you enter a relationship is how you’ll leave it? That there’s no chance for it to grow and evolve, especially when it’s with someone you already have a complicated history with?

Yeah, no.

Frankly, I don’t care what r*thaniel stans think, period, but I think what you mentioned especially is a pretty weak argument because it paints a rather simplistic picture of how people and how relationships work, and I’m not about that.

But to answer your question...yes, I do think Rebecca developed genuine romantic feelings for Greg in S1, and the show does deliberately draw attention to the fact that her feelings for him are very different than what she feels for Josh. Josh is a love trill, champagne bubbles, what happy feels like. She also has fun with Greg, of course, but her feelings for him are more grounded. They’re based in experiences. Sometimes that gets messy and complicated, but they’re real. And especially at that point in the series, I don’t think Rebecca fully understands those feelings, or is prepared to face them or dig into what they really mean, but there is definitely something there. 

I just think sometimes we tend to overthink these things. Maybe in S1 it wasn’t a deep, mature, profound love yet. It definitely had unhealthy elements. They both clearly had issues they needed to work on individually before they could even begin to work on themselves as a couple. But they care about each other deeply, enjoy each other’s company, are physically attracted to each other, and have fantastic chemistry. Those.........are honestly the main ingredients to falling in love with someone. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I guess the tl;dr of this is just that I disagree fundamentally with the premise that you have to be “perfectly” in love to be truly in love. The fact that Rebecca had some messiness with Greg doesn’t invalidate her emotions. We all watched the show. We all saw the way she looked at him. We all heard “Oh My God, I Think I Like You.” We all heard the way her voice cracked when she said his name at her wedding to Josh. 

To paraphrase another one of my favorite shows... it was love to her.

And honestly, that’s all that matters.

hey fic anon from the other day following up here -- i totally get what u mean i took a break from writing fics for like five years until i had a new crazy hfx early last year i hope u do eventually write more whether u post it or not regardless of what fic/fandom it is just for ur own fun Also i think you're crazy insane for saying luke gives you huge simon energy because i completely agree and now i feel crazy just thinking about it

yeah!! the same happened w me honestly. i wrote a lot as a kid, unfortunately started out posting fics about winx and then moved onto harry potter and charmed. then i kinda?? just simply stopped. and it was only really when i started writing for 5sos that i was actively writing fic again. 🥺 tysm tho, i get fic ideas constantly and kinda work on them a little however i don’t really ever FINISH them. i tend to go insane, write 6k in one night and then never look at the fic again?? pretty much all of my fics exc. carry on fic were written over one day with a lot of caffeine so! not the best writing process, doesn’t help a lot for finishing longer stuff.

nooo because the luke / simon thing originally started because i was looking for a fan cast for simon and. i said that if luke had more freckles he’d be perfect?? but he also just has simon energy in general, his song starting line is in my simon playlist, it’s one of the most him songs i’ve ever listened to tbf. like once you think abt the luke simon thing you can’t unsee it. i have a friend who read carry on after reading my fic and they fully just. visualise luke whilst reading simon fhjdk
