if i had a dime for every time a song reminded me like exactly of my old christian summer camp when they’d start like preaching and stuff during a song while the instruments in the back were going and they have a really specific tone of voice id have two dimes which isn’t a lot but. neat? idk

this isn't at all meant to be condescending or finger-waggy because 100% we all have blind spots like this, but I'm really, really hoping that the people who never found Gaiman's approach to his own fandom concerning in any way will take this all as a learning moment.
he was an older, hyper-famous author engaging directly and frequently with an online audience of largely vulnerable young marginalized people. he presented himself as cultured and worldly, and made himself approachable as someone to go to for advice, encouragement and "wisdom." his manner of speech was extremely pathos-heavy and clearly intended to be comforting and encouraging in exactly the way his target demographic needed it to be to swallow every word. the way he spoke about stories and creativity was designed to make young creative hopefuls feel special and important, while sweeping real analytical techniques under the rug - in hindsight, likely so no one would think too critically about the disturbing amount of patriarchal abuse played for cheap shock value and voyerism in his own body of works.
Gaiman saw a target demographic that was desperate for an older creative role model to tell them they were worth something, and he exploited that pain to twist a narrative around himself where he was king and any critique leveled at him or his works were the enemy.
to be clear, he could have been innocent. he could totally have been just an out-of-touch old man saying nice things to people because he wanted to be kind and he thought he was a lot smarter than he really was. red flags are warning signs, not a surefire way to tell if someone is actually "secretly shitty."
but if you used to look up to him, PLEASE take this moment to revisit the ideas you absorbed from him. did you take his words to heart because they seemed to have objective merit? or did you take them to heart because it felt good to believe what he said? do you still hold these values? does knowing he was intentionally manipulating his online audience make you less certain? do you need more information from a different source before deciding one way or another?
again, I'm just really, really hoping people on here will take a moment to reevaluate the ideas and opinions he's injected into tumblr fandom culture, because his reach is immense and he has absolutely been manipulating popular perception of relevant topics to gain further influence and control the narrative around both his own and Pratchett's legacy. please, please take this moment to notice what he's been doing - and next time someone tries to pull the same shit, hopefully we'll be able to apply what we've learned from experience.

doi i've experienced a Lot of suicidal ideation in my life. i really appreciate good depictions of suicide and suicidality in media because too often shows get it wrong
if you watched s2 and chose to focus on the brief moment of izzy saying 'i want to go' when he's made peace with the fact that he is actively dying at this moment
instead of the entirety of ed's arc in eps 1-3 where he shows incredibly accurate suicide warning signs, makes multiple increasingly desperate suicide attempts, is visibly relieved when he thinks he's about to die, and has a lengthy interaction with his subconscious about how he doesn't want to live bc he's unloveable and nobody is waiting for him - only to then be loved back to life by someone who accepts him exactly as he is
and if you chose to take from this season the message that 'the writers think that suicidal disabled queer people should just die' instead of 'nobody is too broken to be loved. somebody will see you as you are, will see every part of you that you hate, every part that you want to carve off yourself and discard, and they will choose to love you anyway. you are not unloveable and you deserve to choose life'
then that says more about you than the writers

what is spn about if not humanising the monster (people who do objectively violent and wrongful Things) vs. villainising the humane (people who are labelled inherently wrong and sinful and therefore mistrusted and ostracised again and again . Regardless of what they do. they are not granted the grace of mistakes, or imperfections—they are held to a standard of ideality so strict it’s disturbingly cruel. Every thing they do Has to be about making up for what they are. The only way they r accepted is if they accept this rhetoric and use it to self-flagellate and overcompensate and beat themselves up again and again—)

Since this is a new demo and all that, I'm giving D the benefit of the doubt. Is this because I love and adore them so much? Perhaps ♥️
what I personally think makes the entire old/new demo so funny is that D really did change. personality wise they're still more open and flirty but they haven't been this nice before 😭 so I'm glad that you're giving them a chance lmao the trust issues I've witnessed are entertaining but wowie.

realistically it was /technically/ a work thing/their job, but there is something special about chanse, angela and amanda being the ones to be involved with the wedding announcement/smosh mouth episode prank. when the new cast came on to the channel they got labeled kff as “not being a part of smosh” but now here they are getting involved with something so monumental even if in a silly goofy way :)
Aw yeah, thats true, thats fun and really sweet :) Yeah like, we shouldnt get it twisted, its a job thing first and foremost and was most likely planned and executed with that intent. But i think thats really fun in its own way, like, its kind of wild and goofy and fun to get to do this kind of thing for a /job/, for people you're close to + like! (Which, yes I'm assuming they are. Even on just a coworker level.)

Me talking to people who understand literary criticism: of course the audience response model has its flaws. it was an important step in moving away from biographical criticism as default, and it was and is a valuable way for marginalized people to read themselves into a canon designed to exclude them, but i also feel strongly that understanding a work's cultural context matters, and i can't fully get on board with a model that (in its most extreme form, at least) validates disregarding cultural differences and projecting your own context onto a work...
Me in a fandom discussion as soon as someone says "but the author said...": i don't care what the author said. i will interpret the text how i damn well please and if the author doesn't like it they can eat a bag of dicks. if you try to tell me what the author said one more time i will bite you to death.

there has been a bunch of posts recently about the inquisitor being erased by the narrative and a bunch of posts about how this means that the inquisitor can never come back from "being the inquisitor" and I agree
BUT
like it's not going to happen because in the end this is bioware's sandbox and if they decide that the inquisitor is gonna be in veilguard then the inquisitor is going to show up in veilguard even if you think your inquisitor would let the world burn and good riddance
BUT
one could make the argument that because the inquisitor is a symbol, because the inquisitor is so much larger than life, because the inquisitor as an individual doesn't fucking matter, they can leave, because no one knows who they actually are. like it's not without risks but if lavellan paces out and goes back to their clan (or any clan) is anyone going to find them? do people even know what lavellan looks like? did anyone in this chantry-led, shamlen-run institution even bother to pay attention to their vasillin?
when cadash or adaar was the herald of andraste in haven all bull had to do was throw some shitty clothes on them as camouflage. when you get to the winter palace, people are surprised about who the inquisitor actually is.
once you disband the inquisition and peace out, how many people can actually pick out cadash out of a line-up when so much about the inquistion has been about erasing everything about them except some vague "idk some dwarf. i think he's a ginger"? like when josephine interviews you she's not doing it to get the story straight, she's doing it to know what to hide, what to emphasize, how to rebuild your whole identity to someone who is not you anymore.

I was painting and the religious-fanatic teacher came to me and started asking questions about my work. I answered them and I was ready to go on with my day and she goes "we used to talk more when you were well..."
And I stopped dead in my tracks and looked at her like "wtf" because lady you are under 2 wrong assumptions here:
I would let YOU of all people be aware of my mental state or personal life or anything that concerns ME at all.
That we had some kind of amicable relationship to begin with? No, I don't know how you got the wrong impression since I just ever talked to you after I disagreed with your views, criticized you and almost fought with you because you said something both incredibly stupid and triggering... just because I've kept things civil doesn't mean I don't consider you anything other than a pretentious asshole.
The audacity of this woman, to think she can come to me and act all motherly and attentive while trying to get her nose in my personal life while bringing up a past bond which never fricking existed????? What like do you miss our disagreements???
And I just told her, "But... I'm good tho" which is not 100% true, but that's none of her business anyway
And she goes "yeah but you were even better"
BITCH????? No I wasn't? I'm not doing super now but I've vastly improved since last year so idk are you tripping or something???? And then she says something else about my work and keeps talking to me and I'm being civil and cordial because I'm not a rude asshole even if he doesn't even deserve this courtesy for the way she treats us.
Idk what's wrong with her, like she thinks I'm some kind of "problematic kidTM" for the way I look who needs salvation?? Which is not true, I don't need you as a mother. I already have a loving family and friends. Thank you and get the hell away from me????
And even if I were looking for someone's help for anything, I would NEVER in a hundred thousand years go to her for it. Not even for a broken nail lol.
She would probably tell me to go to church and confess or some shit. She already told me to call a confessor for my grandma because she had a little accident when she heard me talking about it with someone else... fkn hell.
