Maharashtrian chopped Taro leaves receipe | Aluwadi | Patra
In hindi, these leaves are called as Arbi ke patte. in marathi, colocasia leaves are known as Alu or aloo. whereas in hindi Alu or aloo is the term for potatoes. This recipe has no resemblance to anything potatoes 🙂 This alu vadi recipe is also known as pathrode.
Here are some of the health benefits of including ‘Taro Leaves’ in your diet…
Alu Wadi is traditional Maharashtrian snack or appetizer recipe made with colocasia (taro) leaves which is called as Alu in Marathi or Patra in Hindi . These leaves are layered with a spicy, tangy and sweet chickpea flour paste and then rolled into a log which is then steamed and sliced into thin Vadis (circles), hence the name Alu Wadi or Alu chi Vadi (in Marathi). It can be served steamed or shallow fried (crispy golden brown) with chutney or just on its own.
The needed percentage of the daily dietary needs of Vitamin C, of a child (1 – 10 yrs) is fulfilled by one serving (about ½ cup) of cooked taro leaves.
The leaves contain a good amount of fibre that is useful for the digestion process. This helps to eliminate wastes from the body and prevent re-occurrence of gas.
They have a Low Glycemic Index, and this is very good for diabetic people.

Patode (Colocassia Leaves Rolls) In India you will find many snacks that have the same basic or core ingredient and way of making, but has different seasonings/ingredients and cooking style as per the region. One such good example is Colocassia Leaves Rolls aka Patode of Uttarakhand and UP. It is known as Patrode or Patra in Gujarat and Aluwadi in Maharashtra region. Some like this snack to be shallow fried, some like it tempered and some like them steamed only and this too, also depends upon region to region across India. These leaves are available only in Summer-Monsoon season. Do try it!
