"the michael kandel translation of "the witcher" short story can't hurt you!!"
the michael kandel translation of "the witcher" short story:
#WE HERE IN K L O T H S T U R#the witcher books#[ Nobody liked that. ]#i like how the first two 'main' translations (like published for mass market circulation ones i mean)#were like 'no we can't call it a strzyga... no no...'#(maybe like: 'the english readers won't understand...')#and then when the game and book hit (i.e. both beginning with geralt fighting the striga)#everyone was like 'whoa that striga was really cool'#idk idk enough about it yet to say anything definitively#but my experience and all the other reviews and experiences i've read#from other anglophone readers with no prior exposure to polish or broader slavic myth or culture#has been just like: 'whoa i never knew about that... that's really unique and cool'#and on the flip side. originally witcher gained popularity in part because of the familiarity of the fairy tale#and so despite that witcher in general takes a lot of everything from across europe#if i may just summarize it really obtusely and without taking the precaution of nuance and all#although the first two translations were very much intended to feature polish writers and writing#in the way of the actual translation it feels like they tried to diminish its 'polishness' for the english reader#like for example in chosen by fate itself there are no diacritics (though idk maybe that was a lack of capability of the printing press)#it FEELS like that i'm not saying it was intentional but#for example when you don't say 'leshies' and instead say 'bugbears' that feels like diminishing it#but then later when the witcher's quote-unquote 'polishness' is allowed to come through clearer#then it actually is part of why english audiences were like whoa this is interesting i like it :)#you know real-life events are stories too. and i feel like this is a story with a good moral: 'be yourself'#this is also one of the prime subjects where i disagree with sapkowski lol#because re: 'death of the author' theory type stuff. authors cannot control how their works are interpreted by their audiences#works get interpreted on their own fortunately or unfortunately#so though i think it would be misled to engage with the witcher as if its ONLY good quality is its 'polishness'#i think that also it should be acknowledged how its unique take on culture made it appealing to both domestic and foreign audiences#i think where the problem lies is when we believe it can't be both polish and a blend of multiple cultures and traditions#because like yeah. author is an arthurian weeb

⚠️Spoilers for Shinrei tantei Yakumo - the lamenting doll file 03 and the epilogue⚠️
Here in case you missed it
I just read it and spontaneously wrote this.
Be careful if you haven't read it yet.
The file starts with where it left off the last time with them deciding to locate Mahiro's mother.
I kinda forgot about it since we haven't seen Isshin for a while, but this volume reminded me of how much Yakumo is influenced by Isshin. Be it the way they talk or sometimes even their mannerisms.
It's pretty much a given that they'll have to stay another night at the hotel but that would mean Haruka will have to stay in that creepy ass room again. Isshin really told Yakumo “accept the situation or sleep with her”😭😭😭
But sadly It's just like Gotou said, Their relationship label won't allow it smh
Gotou's snores and Isshin's bad posture are KILLING ME. My mom entered the room while I was having a fit of laughter I just looked crazy to her 😭
Isshin is so chill he doesn't care if you try to make him look bad. Rather his hilarious responses made Gotou look silly for complaining. Poor Gotou-san. Maybe I should learn from him... Unbotherement sure is powerful~
Anyways I guess that means Yakumo is the only one who sleeps normally hahaha
Just like I expected, Mahiro's death is weighing Hiromi down. kinda knew it from file 02, but hearing the details from Masae made me want to cry. No parent should ever go through this.
And so they split into two teams: team Gotou and Yakumo. and team Haruka and Isshin. All I'll say is that the latter team sure is a good match.
And then we have Gotou-san who not only has to put up with Yakumo's comments but also got a Salary cut too!! He suffered too much this trip. Imagine wanting to skip work only to get dragged all the way to a whole different prefecture. Still kinda his fault for ignoring Ishii smh.
Speaking of Ishii I'm happy he and Makoto were mentioned even though they didn't make an appearance. Isshin's mere presence made up for any other character's disappearance. Kaminaga-sensei is a genius for mentioning Eishin too. I think references like that will increase in the complete version. Knowing the future and the direction of your work sure makes a big difference. It was really interesting knowing that Eishin was the one taking care of Nao when Isshin's not around. Nao must really miss Isshin even if she doesn't show it on her face. I head canon afterwards Nao being overjoyed to see not only Isshin but Yakumo and Haruka too after his two-day disappearance.
The scene when that madman dragged Haruka gave me the chills. Kaminaga-sensei using TTCM as a reference sure was brutal I ended up imagining it. Haruka did her best till the very end but the situation was hopeless. She can't even resist. her mouth, legs and wrists were taped. And on top of that he had the audacity to slap her! How dare him! If that man wasn't charged with attempted murder after all this I'm throwing hands!
In the end the case was solved and we find out that Takahiro-kun was the one talking to Hiromi all along. It really broke my heart knowing that all this time he didn't even know he was dead and yet played along to try to comfort Hiromi who was mourning for her child. What a strong kid. He and Mahiro are.
The lamenting doll huh... makes sense.
In the epilogue we learn that Yakumo can't handle hot food which I thought was really cute.
Tbh his whole food preference was quite unexpected. First we learn that he has a sweet tooth (Which Haruka thought doesn't suit him at all lol) and then a similar situation to the one in the epilogue happened in vol. 7 iirc when Yakumo was (again) staring at the sake and when Haruka asked if he can't drink he stubbornally tries to only to spit it out. This man just can't be honest😂 I actually really respect men who don't drink or smoke so that's a flex~
Now some of my favorite Yakumo lines which for some reason all happen to be verbally abusing Gotou (Can't blame Haruka for laughing because c'mon how could you not?)
• “You can say that because you've never heard it yourself. Compared to Gotou-san's snores, even a train would be quieter.”
• “A member of the police stating that he'll be driving under the influence? Japan is finished.”
• “I'm saying bears can't understand the taste of wine. What if someone made up a new proverb: bears and wine.”
• "I don't want to waste any more calories than this."
• "Well, that's not surprising. A bear with damaged taste buds such as Gotou-san will never understand."
Bye I'm using these irl.
I'll also add these two because I keep remembering these two exchanges and laughing:
1)
"I see. If you don't want to, it's fine. But please stop bringing cases to me from now on."
"This and that are a different story."
"No, it's the same thing. Ah, that's right. So that Gotou-san will stop bringing me cases, I'll be reporting to the police that you've been leaking investigation details to a civilian."
"What!? Don't joke with me! I'll get fired if you do that!" Gotou shouted in panic.
"Good then. That way I won't have to involve myself in cases that have nothing to do with me, and taxpayer money won't have to go into paying the incompetent Gotou-san; just like killing two birds with one stone."
"What did you say!?"
"Isn't that great? This way, Gotou-san can also play around to your heart's content. So it'll be more like killing three birds with one stone," said Yakumo, grinning as he looked at Gotou.
He really stabbed where it hurt. Having been commented like that, Gotou wouldn't have a way to refuse. "Fine. I'll help. Happy?"
Gotou lifted his heavy bottom up from the sofa reluctantly as he sighed. Yet Yakumo wasn't done with his counterattacks.
"Not really, it's fine even without Gotou-san helping."
"That wasn't what you said earlier!"
2)
"Sorry about that. Could you please tell me what I should do?" Gotou asked formally while swallowing his displeasure.
"You should know if you listened to the story"
"I'm asking because I don't know."
"You should have if you paid close attention to the whole story."
"Well I don't know!"
"Is that something to be proud about? Good grief.”
Too much Yakumo😂
Volume 11 is up next. I'm really really excited for this one because Unkai and Miyuki are one of the best antagonists I've ever read. I'll never forgive them for what they did to Yakumo but their back stories are very very well written and explains how they ended up that way. That last arc will wrap everything up. I remember reading the book description a while back but Laute's translations stopped at the time so I thought I'll never read it.
The day has finally come!!!
#I know I said I know longer post but I wanted to write something short like everyone in the comment section#I have too much to say tho so I just put it here#Writing this was really fun even though no one will read it#I'll do it again when vol. 11 comes out#My obsession with the Yakumo novel is back and I'm all ready for it~#I wanted to contribute to the fandom in some way so I forced a couple of my friends to read Yakumo and they actually liked it#Unsurprisingly because how could you not? hopefully the number of people who read Yakumo will increase~#Although tbh the main reason I did it was because I wanna yap to someone about my current no.1 hyperfixation#Also why do the illustrations in the reblog look so damn good? Where is that book I NEED it.#990 yen is quite ok-ish in my currency and I don't need to learn a whole different language for it#guess I'll save up~#I feel like I overdid it with the tags#Oh well#shinrei tantei yakumo#shinrei tantei yakumo translations#lamenting doll#saitou yakumo#yakumo saitou#manabu kaminaga

Ok game time which 3 series would you just DIE to get a run on ? I'm talking full creative control, can be as a writer or an artist + plotter if that suits your vibe best
My 3 are
Suicide Squad
Wonder Woman
Green Lantern Corps/Green Lanterns
(in that order)
#last one may wiggle around but i think thats mostly it. others i would want to do but if were talking full runs then this would be my picks#there are other things id ofc want to do though. a wonder girl (cassie) mini in addition to the ww run probably some superman stuff too#although idk him as well i do love him. maybe a mini there or even a prestige format book if i go crazy#would love to do a quick something with cass cain too ofc (me and the rest of this site lol). could probably figure out a plot to smth#longer if i thought abt it but would love to guest write a standalone issue or two for an ongoing of hers#what else would i want to do.... the sui sq and wondy are rlly the big ones bc ive thought abt that the most. glc ive thought about too but#to a bit less of an extent. ooh there was that bleez mini i plotted out during lunch once last year. think i had some sketches laying around#for that too.#who else would i do.... those are rlly the main ones atm. books i would write vs books i would read are definitely different though. there#are some pitches i would throw out but wouldnt know how to write at all i just know it could be done good somehow. like ik nothing abt#aquaman but i think its possible a wonder woman/aquaman story could slap#OR NO A WONDER WOMAN & SUPERMAN ONE I WAS JUST TALKING ABT THAT. dont call it that though ofc they should get a duo name in the same vein as#world's finest. and ofc 72848274 issues of bro time. anyways <33333333#also a not abt the rankings sui sq is higher than wondy which may seem crazy from a wondy blogger but 1. i do love them and 2. they need me#so much more. this subject is such an egofest for me bc ofc i think i could do everything perfect but like they need a good run soooooo bad#whereas id LOVE to do wondy but ik they would survive without me. anyways yeah <3#anyways on a totally unrelated not at all adjacent topic.... my askbox is always open btw 😘#also idk if my green lantern corps book would be called glc. may just hit the green lanterns vol. 2 bc who is stopping me really

THE BEST OF PRIORITY: TUCHANKA (PART 2)
Featuring: Cmdr. Sophie Shepard, Lt. James Vega, EDI, Urdnot Wrex, and Dr. Mordin Solus With: Urdnot Bakara And a Special Guest Appearance by: Kalros, Mother of All Thresher Maws I MADE A MISTAKE! I made a mistake... big picture made of little pictures- too many variables. Can't hide behind statistics... can't ignore new data- my responsibility. Need to go- running out of time. Not your work, not your cure- not your decision. Had to be me- someone else might have gotten it wrong... Mass Effect 3: Legendary Edition (2021)
#mira makes gifs ✨#sophie shepard#james vega#EDI#urdnot wrex#mordin solus#mass effect#mass effect 3#me3#mass effect legendary edition#dailygaming#i'm gonna continue the rambles in the part 2 gifset but one of the things i adore about tuchanka is the scenic shots#there are literally so many gorgeous ones that about half of part two is scenic shots because holy fuck tuchanka is beautiful#the kalros reaper ones especially? like those are so cool i had to include at LEAST a few of them bc that fight is awesome#and when the cure disperses?? literally the prettiest scene in the game#EDI and james have really cute dialogue together too!! i adored their moments towards the end of the mission#although i did say i was gonna give thoughts on mordin in sur'kesh and i think it boils down to him being an okay?? character in my book#like mordin definitely isn't one of my favorites but i will respect that he's definitely a very complex character and he's interesting imo#especially in terms of how he's written and his motivations/how he sort of grows and evolves over both ME2 and ME3#like the quote i subquoted the post with is the one you get when you try to stall him from going up into the tower#(so it's not from soph's canon- but i love the scene so i used it anyways)#and one of the things i really like is that you can see the switch from mordin in ME2 who argues that what he did was RIGHT#versus mordin in ME3 who is starting to see what was wrong in the context of all the new information he has#and for me- seeing a character who can grow to recognize that they're flawed and made mistakes- i can respect the HELL outta that#even if mordin isn't my favorite character in the trilogy i'm gonna give him massive props for his character growth arc#because it's always interesting to see someone grow and recognize their mistakes and find a way to be a better person#to own their mistakes and fix the shit that they fucked up#i don't think i'd ever choose the option to not cure the genophage but mordin will always get props from me for his character arc tbh#i'll stop rambling now! have a good day wherever you are <3

I don’t think I have a lot to say on this chapter, but! Cosette still getting to be a child even during an escape scene is so nice!
Take the first paragraph, for instance:
“Uncertainty was at an end for Jean Valjean: fortunately it still lasted for the men. He took advantage of their hesitation. It was time lost for them, but gained for him. He slipped from under the gate where he had concealed himself, and went down the Rue des Postes, towards the region of the Jardin des Plantes. Cosette was beginning to be tired. He took her in his arms and carried her. There were no passers-by, and the street lanterns had not been lighted on account of there being a moon.”
Cosette getting tired and needing to be carried just takes up two sentences here. It’s not the focus of the paragraph; it’s not even an opening or concluding point. Instead, Cosette’s exhaustion is just another step in Valjean’s escape. She tires; he carries her. The use of simpler sentences emphasizes the sense of an immediate reaction, especially in contrast to all of the other sentences here. While the other sentences don’t really feel long to read because they’re broken up with punctuation, these two sentences are short and aren’t subdivided into many clauses, making them feel faster even than Valjean’s escape. Caring for Cosette, then, has become second nature to him. It requires less thought than fleeing the police, even after all his experience with the latter. At the same time, positioning this in the middle of the paragraph stresses that Cosette’s state is part of the escape. This isn’t just a struggle between Valjean and the police (although that’s certainly an aspect of this), but a complex interplay between Valjean and Cosette trusting and caring for each other, Valjean fleeing the police, and Cosette not knowing what’s going on but sticking with her father anyways.
I also love how Cosette later changes her mind when her feet go numb and decides to walk again. Even in the midst of an intense escape, she still gets to be a child, and that’s wonderful.
#les mis letters#lm 2.5.2#jean valjean#cosette#I'm always surprised that Hugo is good at writing children#even though this book has so many memorable child characters#I always forget that they're memorable not because of Symbolism#although that's part of it#but because they're interesting!#Cosette is really resilient and also feels so much like a child#Gavroche will be fun too#but I love that they feel so much like kids#in spite of everything around them

shonda rhimes save me..... shonda rhimes...... save me shonda rhimes!!!
#ok brimsley narration you have charmed meeeeee happy pride month <3#it's not as good as the scene in the show. i loveeee that first brimsley and reynolds scene in the show#not because they're having gay sex although i think it's awesome that shonda put gay sex in bridgerton#i love the way those guys fucking talk to each other.... genuinely one of the top parts of queen charlotte is the way charlotte and george#communicate through brimsley and reynolds be it knowlingly or unknowingly#they're like charlotte and george's parallels and mirrors it's so awesomeeeeee oh my god#also the inherent tragedy of loving someone who has already devoted their existence to someone else...#and someone else who can't love them back too.... and your only hope to be loved back is with a person in the same situation as you#but then of course. you can never really have each other because you're already not the most important person in their life#i wonder if there ever could have been a time where reynolds might have wanted to give up his devotion to george to be with brimsley#which would have been tragic because brimsley would NEVER give up charlotte. and it's sooo delicious!#anyway i love the way they talk when they're arguing about charlotte and george....#literally shonda you are the genius of our generation!!!!!!!!!!!!!#i'm choosing to imagine all the things wrong with this book are julia quinn's fault seeing as my queen would never betray me#(ignoring all the betrayals)

you see the problem with .me reading is that.meataphors
#if u tell me that there's one ill find it too hard#ill like go into the history of hex codes+ the history of numbers if u tell me that the color of something matters#and then the real importance is like pink is the color of love or something#the owl looked down? trauma caused by religion. (i say while reading books for fifth graders)#i grasp at everything entirely too much really#i tell someone about my fave book series and it sounds like a monumental criticism of society and its like dogs having fun#fox (vulpes vulpes) on the internet for the first time#its also a problem with me writing#ill write something like ''the fox jumps. the wolf squeaks. the owl dies'' and its actually about (i hit the limit i cant explain)#there IS an explanation actually. fhat would like x10 the length of the tags though#huff. i mean these arent good examples although they all have happened. but these arent my best interpretations since i was tired

I started by telling myself I shouldn't feel bad that I didn't get all my planned chores done: Saturday is a rest day, and we've just finished three weeks of crunch at work. (Next week might also be crunch but probably not; the product ships at the end of the week but we should be in good enough shape already.)
But then I realized: I ran three errands in the morning, and did three chores in the evening--even if one of the chores was just "cook a healthy dinner" and two of the chores were banking-related on a website. (But one involved sending text messages, and one involved an actual phone call to customer service, so I can't even really say they were just on a website.) That's six things I got done on a rest day. I may have overscheduled by saying I'd do at least eight things, but still, six things is very good.
#the things I did NOT do all involve a hand drill so#I have about average upper body strength for a woman which means I do struggle somewhat with hand drills#although these chores all involve walls not metal so it's not THAT bad--except it's sideways rather than down so I can't lean into it#so yeah that's a level of chores I was not up to on my rest day#tomorrow is too booked up for chores--I told my friend I wanted to hang out with them this weekend#since I said no two weeks ago (I was fully booked) and they had to cancel on me last weekend#and normally we meet in the middle for hiking (we live 1.5 hours apart) but this time they suggested I drive all the way out#and I said yes before I realized that's what they were suggesting#so that's fine--but I can't do anything else beyond that tomorrow even just basic chores#which is a little bit getting to me because a house guest is coming to visit in four days#and I really need the shower curtain to be properly secured to the wall by then?#anything else is gravy--I already have clean sheets for her and everything--but THAT needs to be done#I've been living here almost two months and have only knocked the shower curtain down about three times so it's really not that bad#I even hang my towels on it and it's fine BUT I know how to do it? and I'm like professionally good at manipulating physical objects lol#like being a mechanic of sorts is literally a significant chunk of my job#whereas she doesn't pick up object-manipulation tasks easily--especially not involving gross motor skills#in fact when I mentioned it to her she was like yeah that was something she was not going to be able to handle#if I didn't have it properly installed by the time she arrived#so uh... well not today or tomorrow#and Monday and Tuesday I have work... and she's arriving Wednesday#ok realistically tomorrow night I'm just going to have to suck it up and get to drilling no matter how tired I am from driving and hiking

"In Xenophon of Ephesus' romance novel, the Ephesiaca, two boys about the same age fall in love, but one takes on the role of 'lover' and must undertake to rescue the other from the clutches of an older man by abducting him at swordpoint from the latter's home, having had to sell all his belongings and take sail to get there."
damn the ancient greeks wrote some choice yaoi
#taken from same-sex unions in premodern europe by john boswell#really good book that i recommend although i feel a bit too dumb to fully make use of the knowledge in it#there's a lot about the ways in which specific latin and (ancient) greek words are translated and what they actually mean in context#that completely goes over my head as someone who has never studied either#this book is liberally referenced in pretty much every queer history text i've picked up though so i really wanted to read it lmao

So far the pride and prejudice adaptations I've seen are:
Pride and prejudice 1940
Pride and prejudice 1995
Pride and prejudice 2005
Pride and prejudice and zombies
Bride and prejudice
The Lizzie Bennett Diaries
Bridget Jones's Diaries
Fire Island
Lost in Austen
Austenland
Death Comes to Pemberley
But it's NOT ENOUGH
#pride and prejudice#my post i guess#Give me a good adaptation of p&p and you'll make me happy#Although not all of these are good but it's too late to go in depth over all of these#Let me just tell you that ppz is not a great movie but the book was nice#P&P 1940 was nice but quite different from the novel#B&P has bangers like no life without wife#And ive just seen fire island and it's So Freaking Clever and Good i loved that#I didnt really like DCTP#Cant remember much about lost in austen other than ive watched it the 1st time on youtube with subs bc it was there once#And obvs i love austenland#Conflicted about this post being a draft or a published one but it's one am and we do not make rash decisions *hits post anyway*

finished my reread of project hail mary! wanted to finish it before i got on my train but that didn't happen, so now i have a near 500 page book in my house and nowhere to put it lol. just as good as i remembered it being, whatever it is that andy weir does with his writing absolutely clicks for me because i tore through that thing in about a day's time (a little more than, and slightly slower than i read it the first time lol, but i had things to do when i got back to town today!). it feels so great to read a book again that's so good i can absolutely eat through it
#sasha speaks#into the wild didn't really do that for me and underland isn't really either#i'll probably still try to finish underland but it might not be before summer's end at this point tbh#i think i wanna get something new. there's two nonfiction i've been eyeing at the local bookshop#although maybe in the spirit of rereading things and seeing how much faster/slower i get at it this time around#maybe i'll get my hands on too like the lightning again#then again maybe i don't want to chance either slogging or speeding through all four books and 2000+ pages of terra ignota#again just yet. esp with only a month before the school year starts up. lol#last year it took me maybe three weeks of on and off reading to get through tltl (was doing a show at the time so i was busy)#and then like...two more weeks to finish The Rest Of The Series. like a hot knife through butter those ones#were they 'good.' not like phm or the martian are to me lol. but by gd they were captivating reads#seven surrenders and the will to battle especially

kinda wish i didnt feel so iffy all the time about love interests of color (+ white protag) in romance... i mean by default it means that it focuses on the white persons like interiority more than the love interest (when sometimes the ml is much more interesting) + then the ml’s problems as a poc become something where the white protag gets to step in and Be A Hero/solve the issue. which is like :P
#can also have the problem where the ml is then Too Good (although this is smth that happens with love interests anyways)#anyways. reading a book and im not sure if i like it -_-#protag is just like sylvain except sylvain does war crimes. why dont YOU do war crimes boy#not initially sympathetic enough or has enough bad things happen yet for me to bcome sympathetic now#so far! i think its also that ive like grown out of YA somewhat LOL im mostly just reading this book so i can get rid of it#i used to be really fond of fop type chars and i think i still am? but also watching this guy be a dick to everyone#and then be like WOE IS ME#is like. -_- ok#txt

No offense at all but doing a Big Shocking Reveal that only leaves the viewer confused because its "shockingness" hinges on the presupposition that a character knows something the show has given no indication as to whether they know it or how and then only explaining how the character knows that via flashbacks in subsequent episodes AFTER the Big Reveal is... not the best storytelling device
#thoughts no one cares about#really want to like pluto because the plot has soooo much soapy potential but man#they really dropped the ball with the whole 'GASP! may knew it was ai-oon all along!'#and 'GASP! may knew the twin she fell in love with when she was a schoolgirl was ai-oon all along!' reveals#like how am I supposed to be shocked that zomg may knows!!11!1 when... we didn't even know she knew oom had a twin?#and if this is from the book it's no excuse bc if you're adapting smth you can't assume people are gonna go in with book knowledge#like am I going insane?#it's so wild to watch these shows when you're neutral/indifferent to the main ship#because all the writing inconsistencies start to jump out when you're actually here for the plot or to watch a good story#and are not just frothing at the mouth waiting for the next time your ship gets to share screentime#once again I'll see this one through bc it's too late to quit anyway and I AM still curious about how it will all end#ALSO the preview for the next episode shows oom finally wakes up! ohhhh YASSSS the DRAHHHMAHHH#hopefully it lives up to its potential although I have my doubts with how Big Reveals have been handled so far#oh well c'est la vie
