I guess outside of the content related discourse the other side of discourse about Ao3 that makes me feel gross is the idea that unless you are writing with the end goal of becoming a Published Author you are wasting your time. For a lot of people writing will stay just a hobby and that's ok. I feel like it's the same strain that makes a lot of people feel pressured to make every hobby they have into a source of income.

Also with so many long running franchises it's just disingenuous to say making fanwork doesn't count as practice in writing or art. There are plenty of examples of people who started out from fanart / fanfic and then got hired on official projects. It's fine to not enjoy fanfic but saying it doesn't count as practice just isn't true. It's better to write silly self-indulgent stuff than nothing at all.

I'd honestly rather read something where I can tell the author is having fun than something that is technically perfect.

To put it short there's evidence both for and against them existing, and this is without me actually looking anything up so i might be missing something.

cases for chickens being extant: there's been chickens present in SOME form in several splatfests, they're not mammals so they're not NECESSARILY extinct, despite being domesticated animals and thus being unlikely to survive it doesn't mean it'd be IMPOSSIBLE because pigeons and other relatively human-dependent birds still survive in Splatoon, and of course there are many instances of Eggs being a staple in inkling culinary culture. egg is everywhere

cases for chickens being extinct: we only actually See chickens (or chicken, as in food) in splatfest art and splatfest dialogue which isn't (or at least definitely wasn't until Splatoon 3) canon-compliant at all. We havent actually seen chickens in-universe to my knowledge, nor had them mentioned outside splatfest. probably the biggest nail in the coffin is that there IS a chicken statue in Splatsville, and typically when there are big animal statues in the cities those are statues depicting extinct animals. this is something from an interview that touched on the crane and tortoise statues in Inkopolis Square; which also confirms that it wasn't JUST MAMMALS that suffered and went extinct, it was also other miscellaneous land animals and even random birds which I think me and initially a lot of other people thought were just. Fine and safe. But if a random bird like a crane can be extinct now then chickens are absolutely not safe just because they're not mammals. although eggs are in like every food it's not really been confirmed in any way that those are CHICKEN eggs (although that is the most likely), they could as well be farming domesticated pigeons or something

So really it's a big case of no real confirmation they DO exist, but also no real confirmation they DON'T exist, but also the only context we see them in-universe is in a context where every other animal depicted there IS extinct and it's like a lore thing. So the existence of eggs is a big hint TOWARDS them existing but could easily mean nothing whereas the other one is more in line with proving they do not exist. it is a very uncertain situation for the chicken

HOWEVER!!!!!! there is hope for the chicken. splatfests in Splatoon 3 have had more in-universe accurate themes and dialogue so far (meaning they dont randomly make up shit like "marina's landlord is a narwhal" and "inklings eat red meat" or whatever the fuck in that sea food vs mountain food one we didnt even have that one it was regional). SO THIS MEANS! in the next splatfest we Could get a somewhat stable answer to if chickens exist or not. of course the other 2 options are extinct animals whereas the chicken is 50/50. i'm HOPING the dialogue touches upon this fact and doesn't just talk about all of those like they just Exist. basically we are very close to some kind of progress on this issue that would be Somewhat credible because while splatfest dialogue has never been a credible source in the past, it has been WAY better in S3

Is Final Fusion Really Final?

My experiences with splitting again after final fusion and some notes on one of the most controversial debates about final fusion.

Hi - My name is Duckie.

I'm a new split. The first "proper" split in my system since 10/12/2023.

I split 2/16/2025, after months of chronic stress and trauma and reaching a safe place to finally just collapse and fall apart about it. We also split another new part, Retro, 2/22/2025.

So, what does this mean for my system? Does this mean we've "failed" final fusion, or that final fusion is not viable as a recovery path?

Well, no. At least, I don't believe so.

Let's talk about it.

A misconception that I see a lot is that final fusion is essentially a "cure" for DID - it isn't.

Final fusion is a state, an experience, rather than an ending or a finish line. In fact, recovery work extends far past when final fusion happens, and for those of us receiving clinical treatment, it is strongly recommended that treatment continue beyond final fusion, with some recommendations even suggesting a year or more of continued treatment and stabilization.

Recovery isn't linear, and this still applies after final fusion.

Final fusion coming apart is not only something which happens, but is something that is expected to happen. Many people will even go through several final fusions.

Does this mean that final fusion isn't really, well, "final"?

In some sense, absolutely. In fact, a more appropriate term would probably be "full fusion", rather than "final". I use "final fusion" mostly out of habit, and because it is the most recognized term for this experience.

Maintaining final fusion is a practice, and even beyond that, there are times where splitting is necessary - not because of a failure in final fusion, but because final fusion is not what we need in that moment. At times, splitting helps us more than final fusion.

Splitting is a tool, a coping method, one that is often very good at what it does.

In my case, my DID brain is just doing what DID brains do: Dissociating as a response to chronic stress and trauma. I experienced stress and trauma beyond what I could reasonably cope with, and so my brain is relying on its oldest, most reliable methods of survival. This is a good thing - This is exactly what it is meant to do in this situation. Dissociation and amnesia allows me to experience life in smaller pieces while I rest, recover, and eventually process.

Additionally, dissociation and amnesia makes it more possible for me to actually hold myself to resting - I am extremely prone to pushing far past my limits and burning out and crashing, and it is harder to do this when I am dissociated and cannot think too hard about many things and cannot remember the things I wanted to do anyway. And, well, that's exactly what I need right now - I am lucky to be in a place where I can just let others help me out while I recover for a while.

That being said, although the dissociation and amnesia certainly serves me and protects me when I need it, it is not by any means all smooth sailing - It is, simultaneously, very frustrating to be dissociated all of the time again, as well as other symptoms such as mood swings, fatigue, increased anxiety, confusion, and so on. I have also gotten deeply comfortable with the constant background chatter and support of all of my parts, and not having that is isolating and disturbs me. My DID symptoms have always been on the "severe" end, so having an increase in these again has been very hard on me.

Both of these truths - that dissociation is useful as well as difficult - can coexist at the same time.

What my DID brain is doing is a reasonable response to unreasonable circumstances; Rather opposite from a failure, I believe that both final fusion and splitting are completely normal functions of my DID brain which operate in different contexts.

I have, at times (and especially lately), caught myself being incredibly perfectionistic about my recovery and my fusion, and I do think that a big part of that comes from this expectation that final fusion is final, an end goal, a cure - and, oppositely, that splitting is bad, unhealthy, or a sign of failure. How much less pressure would it be, and how many more conversations could we open up, if we were to think that final fusion is simply just another way of being DID, a system structure like any other, and that splitting is simply something many systems do? If final fusion wasn't treated as any "better" or "worse" than, say, being polyfragmented, but just a different sort of systemhood? If splitting was just as valued as fusion?

Personally, I think that it would help a lot, and I believe that a perspective shift like this would help us to imagine even more ways to live as DID and futures with DID.

Hey! I'm not a botanist, but I'm in circles where it's a bigger thing and I'm kind of curious about something.

So, from an outsider's perspective, the genus Garcinia has a lot of weird and messy classifications. For example, common species like G. intermedia and G. gardneriana are really similar to Garcinia brasiliensis, to the point that it's pretty controversial if they're actually separate species. The Garcinia species colloquially known as "achachairú" also appears to bear a lot of similarities to that trio (although much less than they share with each other), HOWEVER it's almost exclusively referred to (in cultivation and in studies) as G. humilis, a Carribean species with small oval-shaped leaves, despite actually having very long lanceolate leaves and being exclusively found in the Andean foothills of Bolivia. Also, multiple frequently cultivated species like Luc's garcinia and Russell's sweet garcinia haven't actually been described yet, despite for example the former having a decent amount of scientific interest and frequent genetic testing done on it.

All of these odd classification things and even more others have been pretty well known in my circles for the past 15 years-ish, but still nobody seems anywhere close to a conclusion for them. How long does it usually take for a genus to get organized when it has as many species as Garcinia does? And how do they do it? Do they go around testing every single species or only a few at a time? If a species is currently not named, do the same people usually describe them as part this endeavor, or just leave them for somebody else? I saw Plinia and Artocarpus recently got reshuffled a lot because of some prominent genetic studies on them, and several new species and even genera were added, but it just seems alien to me how stuff like that even ends up happening. There are so many plants out there!

ok im kind of surprised i can offer a few possible answers to this question despite having never heard of this but i think i can. if the question is 'why aren't some plants actually described', this is the primary reason why.

when i was in plant anatomy class in college, the person teaching us was a plant anatomist who assigned us different plants from the greenhouse to dissect and describe in a paper for her, and she told us that we might find something that hadn't been described before, which was pretty shocking to me. what do you mean i could potentially find a new-to-science thing? has nobody in history looked at this plant that's just growing in the greenhouse upstairs??

what she said was that no, sometimes not. there are so many plants out there that it's difficult to do one exact in-depth description and published examination of each species, so what botanists end up doing is doing or finding one in-depth examination of one species in a specific group and assuming that all the others in the group are at least similar, if not the same. which is good because it saves time and works as a shorthand, especially if there's not much funding, but also sometimes it has the potential to overlook more nuanced differences that can go undiscovered for a long time. but that's just botanical species in the conventional sense, which i don't think is as straightforward in what you're describing.

another answer to this question that's more specific to the species you're talking about here is that plants are having sex. they have so so so soooo much sex. few things they enjoy more to be honest. and given that the most conventional (but not only) definition for different species is 'can't have sex with other species because it's too different from them', the lines get blurrier to deal with, and one thing botanists do when the lines between species get too blurry (because of all the sex) is to just assume that they're all part of some kind of hard-to-describe genetic soup with individual plants falling along gradients or spectrums of similarities or differences, and in this case you'll see botanists just name the most prominent species among them and call it the '[most common suspect] complex', which groups together all the ones that happen to be having sex with each other at the same time, just to make them easier to talk about. this typically doesn't mean that they're species-less, but more that they can be thought of as a group with a few distinct points where they can look very distinct, and those points are the species, if that makes sense; see the citrus sex graph at the end for an example.

i also see from a cursory google search that people seem to be planting and eating these in a more widespread way, and people are talking about them on forums and stuff. this is one of the cases in botany where things get tricky, because a person looking for traits in a fruit that's having tons of sex might not actually be looking for the same things botanists are looking for when describing a species-- it might seem easiest to just find which species or few species are the tastiest and grow those, but if it's a genetic soup then all you can really do is do it the old fashioned way and breed individual plants for the traits you want. which, who knows, could end up being a hybrid between all of them.

case in point: again i am not completely up to date with the lore here but i found a forum thread where people were debating which species to plant and the consensus was just to plant multiple species at once, which is fine but is also really funny given that it DOES facilitate even more sex, thus blurring the lines even further and-- if the posters decide to plant the resulting seeds from the fruits-- will create even MORE hybrid plants of no discernible concrete species in the plant soup. the hybrid of a hybrid of a hybrid of a hybrid or whatnot. when does one stop calling it a hybrid between two species and start calling it 'the tree in grandma's backyard that's the tastiest of the berries i've tried'? that is the question, truly, one humanity has had for millennia in the search for the tastiest berry, and at that point it might just be easier to call it a variety or cultivar, which are horticultural terms for just that-- a distinct 'kind' among the same species that taste good subjectively and can be reliably rebred and harvested, like all the apple varieties people debate about.

another reason is that plant phylogenies are hard and brain-twisting and plant taxonomists and systemisists are among our strongest warriors. it's not uncommon at all in botany to be researching something and to find out it's been reshuffled because of a new breakthrough on the case a bunch of people more qualified on the subject decided made more sense like a decades later. sometimes species themselves will even change names multiple times if it turns out that it was described earlier by someone else considering the new circumstances. if you're a really unlucky or just controversial plant all this can happen over and over again until, finally, the trees of math have been resolved in a way that makes sense. how long will it take? surely there is a concrete end to the madness? nah. lol

finally, if you're looking into studies on this, you should know that some phylogeny stuff is opinion-based or subjective, especially at first. what counts as a new group for one group of researchers might not count as one for another. so when you see stuff where people are inventing new categorizations or genuses or whatnot or merging multiple ones together spontaneously, it'll depend on how well supported their reasoning is and what the evidence seems to show, and the larger community of plant taxonomists will, overtime, decide what they want to do with that information-- which may include verifying it or refuting it with more evidence. what researchers are proposing when they split stuff off or merge it together is a new or updated model for thinking about existing information, and that model may be more or less useful than the existing one for the means of actually learning more about the plants.

Anaxa x Scholar!f!reader

Angst/Comfort

You are one of famous scholars in a Grove of Epiphany. Almost everyone adores you because of your famous scientific inventions help plenty of people. You see Anaxagoras pass by sometimes but you mostly pay no mind. Until one day you see Anaxagoras lecture, It is not a mere normal lecture as you think. He is blatantly criticizing about the titans and belief people hold dear to. That is why you stop on your track and listen carefully.

"Hey! Y/N you're here to listen to him?" Your friend passes by and asks.

"Not really... I'm a passerby but I've just found his thought interesting..." You answer your friend while you still pay attention to Anaxagoras words.

"I- I've never thought you like that kind of illogical thinking!" Your friend stutters mix with confusion and disbelief.

"Well... I'm not a closed-minded person to begin with besides listen to him closely. He is being really logical right now." Now, you look directly to your friend and answer.

"G- Good luck with that I... have to leave now" Your friend quickly walks away still in denial.

While you are listening to Anaxagoras, The whispering filled with hatred words is starting to get louder and louder. "The blasphemer", "The foolish" and several words they can think of. You just stay quiet and listen till the end. You have decided after this lecture you will approach Anaxagoras.

"That is very bold of you to say those things to destroy what people believe. I respect that." It may sound fake but you are being genuine.

He stops walking and turns back to look at you in the eyes.

"No need for those sharp gazes. I am being honest. I am Y/N. You might know me already."

"Indeed. I am. I am Anaxagoras. Rule number one: Do not call me Anaxa. Rule number two: Never interrupt me- silence is golden. Remember that"

"Understood." Although you wanted to ask "Why?", You kept it to yourself and respected his words.

"Now tell me. What business do you have to deal with me?" You thought his tone is quite sharp.

"None. I've just found your thought quite fascinating. Don't stick to the old rules or belief and you even dare to speak without caring what people think. I'm just wanting to get to know you. You can count it as my personal business if you want." You say without thinking.

"How amusing. All the thing you said and you still want to know me?" His voice sounds soften a little bit in your ears. You don't answer him. You just give a smile back.

And that is the beginning of how you get close to him. You always give him a small smile whenever he passes by. You always debate controversial topics with him. Or even help him do some works (he also helps you back). Sometimes, you even hang out with him. He might say "Silence is golden" but he doesn't seem to mind you after all.

One day your co-workers notice that you are close to Anaxagoras. They send one person to warn you but it is to no avail.

"Y/N... You seem too close to Anaxa recently." She said her voice laced with hesitation

"Is that a problem?" You curious.

"That is a problem! He can tarnish your fame, Y/N. Don't you already know what he is being called?! You have a lot of people you can be close with but please not be him!" Now her voice mixed with frustration instead.

"Do tell me. It's my problem or yours? I can garantee you my personal life will not affect my work. I knew well what he is being called. Neither he nor I care. Then why should you? You are also one of the people talking bad about him." You don't like when someone intrude on your personal life and you also don't like when people say bad things about people you know. You tried to calm your voice but your tone came out even colder.

"I am just being worried. You know! I am sorry." Your co-worker is scared of you because of your act now.

"No... It's fine. Please tell everyone as I said. Sorry to scare you too. I have to go now. Good luck." Your voice softer than you intended because of those guilty feelings.

Anaxagoras have heard everything you said with your co-worker, he just leans his back to the corner near by and listens to your conversation from the beginning until the end.

"Oh! You're here... Sorry, you have to hear those mean words because of me." You startle but you can't even dare to look straight in his face so you look at the floor instead.

"It's fine. You know me well that I don't care and it's not you fault. Let's go home." He starts to walk. You've never heard this gentle voice of his before. You can't even tell he is being vulnerable or just being gentle with you. So you call him out.

"Anaxagoras... I feel sorry not because it is my fault. But because I care for you." He stops walking.

"..... I know." He hesitated to answer because he thinks 'I am the one who should say sorry not you, Y/N. It is because of me you have to face what I face. I know you care for me but I also care for you more than I should.' But you don't need to know that.

Today is the day Okhema city have a big food festival. You want to go so you ask Anaxagoras to come with you.

"Anaxagoras, Today has a big food festival at Okhema and you know that. Can you please come with me?" Silence....

"I know you don't like those golden threads and some people there. But please, I will leave as quickly as I could." Silence...

"You can buy anything as much as you want I will treat you." Silence...

'Sigh. Seems like I can't convince him huh? Maybe I need to go by myself.' You think. Then suddenly...

"No need. I will go with you." He walks lead the way so you can follow him .

"What? Really? Why?" You are confused.

"You want me to go with you or not?" He walks faster.

"Yes and please slow down."

Everything has gone so smoothly. Anaxagoras didn't buy anything at all. He just followed and watched you only. Until you run into one person...

"Hi Aglaea! Long time no see. You are beautiful as ever." You glance a little bit at Anaxagoras who stands beside you.

"Oh don't flatter me. You also look gorgeous as before. Are you here for the food?" Aglaea glances the food in your bag

"Yes, It is a big festival. I can't miss it."

"Glad you have fun. If you may, can I borrow that man beside you?" Aglea say with a smile face to you. You don't know what to do so you look at irritated Anaxagoras who also staring at Aglaea.

"It's fine, Y/N. Don't worry." He said with irritated tone.

"If you two don't fight, then I guess that's fine. I'll be back once you two finished."

"I promise I won't." Aglaea answers.

When you've gone grab some food for Anaxagoras, They start talking.

"You love her, don't you?" Aglaea starts.

"None of your business." Anaxagoras retorts.

"Otherwise, you wouldn't be here in the first place when you have no reason to. There are little to no people who can convince you and you know that." Anaxagoras stays silence.

"I don't mind you like her. You have every reasons to. She is kind, honest, respectful and-"

"What are you trying to say?" Anaxagoras cut a conversation.

"Accept your feelings and tell her before it is too late. She also cares about you. One day you or she may die but right now you can be honest to yourself and live while you can." When Aglaea has finished speaking, she leaves him there. You come after she has gone.

Little did she know, her words haunted him since that day.

"Aglaea has already gone? I haven't said good bye to her."

"No need." Anaxagoras answers.

"Oh! And these food is for you. I didn't see you eat anything since we came." He stares at those food for a while.

"Thank you." His voice almost sounds like a whisper. You are surprised at his words.

"Take it. Time to go back now." You just smile back.

These days the climate change a lot so you ended up fallen ill. You barely have enough strength to even answer the phone from your friends or your co-workers. When Anaxagoras knows you are sick, he hurriedly comes and asks for your door passcode. He checks your temperature, wipes your face and then cooks for you.

"Y/N, here is your food." Anaxagoras helps you sit and feeds you.

"Ah.. Thank you." You still feel sleepy because of the illness.

"Don't fall asleep now. You have to finish this and take some medicine." He said with a stern voice.

After you take some medicine and ready to sleep one more time you notice Anaxagoras watches every movements of yours.

"Aren't you tried? Watching over a sick people. You might be fallen ill too. You should rest and do anything other than this."

"No, I'm not. Don't worry and rest now. I will be here when you're awake."

When you wake up you feel a lot better, You find Anaxagoras holding your hand while sitting in a chair and his head falling to your bed. You don't even want to retract your hand. So you decide to play his hair with another hand and quietly talk to yourself.

"You told me to don't worry about you but seeing you sleep like this I might need to worry. I really don't know what you are thinking or doing. Anyways, Thanks for always taking care of me.... Sometimes just sometimes, I thought you are fond of me or something. There are the look in your eyes I can not describe...." Your hand stops not because you wanted to but because of his hand. You are shocked.

"What if I am? What if I am fond of you?" He drags your hand to his face and looks at you straight in the eyes.

"Then... I don't mind. Bacause I love you." Then he kisses your hand. You feel your heat rising because of him or the fever. You can't even figure out.

FINALLY FINISHED MY QPHIL 3.0 DESIGN HOORAY (cant wait to. redesign it again in like 3 months.) (CHECK UNDER THE CUT FOR MY SILLY DESIGN NOTES!!)

I think I said this before but i so. SO BADLY wanted him to have a sleep theme since I always loved how his presence on the island was kinda up in the air. Is it a dream? Is it not? When he goes between the island and hardcore is that change really happening? Who knows.

The idea of making his usual outfit more like a housecoat was super appealing to me, so I opted for this open housecoat look with really heavy frills which were super fun to figure out, and I knew from pretty early on that I wanted to give him a quilt pattern SOMEWHERE on his design, so I thought the inside of the coat would do nicely for a sorta "default state". It also meant I could attribute meaning to the symbols and colours I used. wink nudge.

He has a more subtle angel theme, like with the mobile on his walking stick being a halo with the wing placement further emphasizing this, as well as just his generally lighter colour scheme. When I say sleep was his theme I almost more-so imagine it as like. The feeling of waking up in the morning where you're mostly refreshed but still a LITTLE drowsy. Lots of very spring-y, morning colours.

Just some other quick notes, I always really liked the mod in the server where you could have the crows perch on your shoulder and follow cuz of the lantern, so I thought it'd be fun if I made it so brian just straight up WAS the lantern. So I made him look like one of those wall outlet nightlights!! The backpack being kinda cat shaped was COMPLETELY unintentional but a very welcome result. Missa backpack is real.

As for the alternate outfits, I have a bolas one, as well as an ender king one since I deemed those two the most important. For the ender king I weirdly don't have many notes, like it's fairly straightforward (Save for the elephant in the room but now I'm gonna keep my secrets on why that's a thing). The Quilt design is supposed to be a lighter, easier-on-the-eyes version of the no texture pattern, and I imagine that all the goop and gunk on Phil is hidden under the coat. I imagine it'd look fairly similar to canon so just like. imagine it for now. Might draw it one day. MAYBE. There's some tiny additional colour symbolism but I'll hold my tongue on that and let you guys draw your own conclusions there. I WILL say, however, that instead of his theme being sleep, his theme is "nightmare" (and also kinda sleepwalking since both fit).

The Bolas design was SUPER fun to work with. For starters I wanted the three designs to be in three different states. One with the coat, one with the coat reversed, and one without the coat entirely. Since I wanted to do the checker pattern thing with the possession design, having the sleeveless bolas design worked really well for the shape I landed on, even if it wasn't conventional. and SPEAKING of non-conventional design choices, I decided to go against the usual plague doctor + gas mask fusion design. Which might be controversial... But god. The moment I thought of his mask being a falconry hood, the idea just wouldn't leave my mind. Because of this, the full mask is kinda separated into two parts. The eye mask which kinda also mirrors his usual sleep mask, and the gas mask itself (I kept it in a beak shape since it'd feel odd if i made it any other shape for phil, lol). When designing the whole thing I kept thinking about more apocalypse setting clothing. Like mad max. Or the one gag from that one spongebob movie. Lots of leather. And of course, to match the other sleep themes, the Bolas outfit's theme is "fever dream", although its a bit more subtle. It's easily the weirdest design, The pops of green were simultaneously in reference to the friendship emerald... As well as... Well, the green chain right below the chain on the sickness themed design was probably the most tasteful way I could've chosen to get across vomit without it being too on the nose. (also sidenote, I had a few friends compare bolas phil to... a fly. Which wasn't intentional but it's kinda funny that the guy designed after fever dreams looks a little bit like a bug.) Ok thats it for design commentary I'm gonna go to bedge nyow.
