So, I decided to rework Amara Namani for a better Pacific Rim 2.

First, her name suggests to me that the character was originally not meant to be white; or that the version of Amara we actually see in the film was combined from multiple characters, one of whom was not white. So, I'm going to make her Desi.

I'm also going to make her a survivor of K-Day, because I suspect this was the original intention, and because it makes things make a little more sense. The novelization informs us that the specific Jaeger Jake was stealing parts from was Romeo Blue, which would suggest that this scene was originally written to take place in Oblivion Bay, in the San Francisco Exclusion Zone. (This will also make Amara a young adult.)

I'm also going to make her someone who fights in mini-Jaeger battles. I don't know for sure if this was the original intention, but it makes sense and establishes her as someone with combat ability. (We know from the comics that these kinds of fights happen, and the very name "Scrapper" makes me think that a double meaning could have been originally intended - the mech is built from scrap, to scrap in fights.)

Jake (who is now Stacker Pentecost's nephew) meets her in a very similar way to what we see in PRU. But there's one important difference: the pair of them don't get chased down by November Ajax, but by Lady Avenger, which is piloted by Mako Mori and Raleigh Becket. (Mako is a little surprised to see that the man she's chasing is her own cousin!)

I'm also getting rid of that weird cop stuff, by the way. (This also means that Jake/Amara/Scrapper are not getting tased, because that was honestly fucked up.)

Amara is offered the chance to join the PPDC as a cadet, where she is trained by Raleigh Becket, who has just been diagnosed with cancer and will no longer pilot Lady Avenger while he's in treatment. (And yes, he will recover!)

This version of Amara also has difficulty fitting in with the other cadets. One of her problems is that she's spent all of these years fighting by herself, for herself. While she wants to pilot a real Jaeger, she doesn't really have the right attitude for it.

Meanwhile, Jake is now working for the PPDC because Mako has convinced him to fill in for Raleigh for the time being. Jake and Amara bond over Jaeger tech together, and before long it's obvious they're drift compatible - we can see them anticipate each others' actions.

When the kaiju attack, Amara is paired up with the best match they can find for her among the other cadets. However, their drift compatibility score wasn't great, and their performance in the conn-pod is also not great. Amara and her assigned co-pilot fare poorly. Jake and Mako step in to save them and take the kaiju down, but Lady Avenger has serious damage, and the fight isn't over.

Jake has an idea - he switches places with Amara's injured co-pilot, and they proceed to kick the ass of the kaiju. (Mako, meanwhile, gets into Scrapper, and continues to assist the fight.) The story plays out similar to what you see in the original PRU, though with certain differences as the nature of the main villain is quite different.

Summary: there were two major problems glaring back at ghost from the file.

one, mactavish's baffling inability to maintain a drift for more than the record of, so far, seven seconds. he nailed the handshake every time down to the letter, just like the NBOs taught, and the psych analysts reported there was no issue with modesty reflex or tendency to chase rabits. he'd watched the last test drift between mactavish and another cadet, saw the blank relaxed look on his face hold during the handshake, which almost made it genuinely funny when the other cadet started gushing blood from his nose as soon as the neural link was established.

two, mactavish was a fucking nightmare to deal with.

I need book recs again, this time for kid 2! 13, "neurospicy," high reading level for vocabulary but has difficulty with parsing subtly-drawn emotional motivations for characters. Fairly black and white worldview / very strong sense of justice and injustice, but he's slowly starting to integrate more nuance. He's bored with the books we have in the house and overwhelmed by the options at the library. Help me narrow it down?

He likes:

Giant robots and mechs - current very well-read favorites are the Pacific Rim novelizations.

Science fiction, as long as the science is internally consistent.

Legend of Zelda - we just got him the graphic novel box set for his birthday.

Star wars / Predator / Megaman / kajiu franchises (Japanese - he's deeply scornful of the US Monsterverse, but loved Gamera: Rebirth. Any book recs that hit similar vibes to G: R?)

(Caveat: any media based on another media property needs to be consistent, or it'll drive him batshit. He still brings up his irritation at inconsistent Jaeger weights and armaments and build dates cross-referenced from design docs on the original PacRim vs The Black vs the info cards on the action figures, etc.)

Enjoyed LotR and has read - and enjoyed! - the Silmarillion. Not currently interested in checking out other high fantasy.

He does play TTRPGs as well as computer and console games, and I can see LitRPG working as a genre, but he hates romance / is uncomfortable with sexualization and sexual references in media, and is very sensitive to racism and discrimination, and there's a lot of not-great stuff lurking in that sphere.

I picked up Iron Widow for him and he says he enjoyed it, but not enough to read a sequel. Too explicit in some sections, I think.

He did enjoy the old Tales Of books from the Star Wars EU, as well as a book of short stories in the Predator universe, so short story collections or anthologies are good too.

We've just started getting into the Assassin's Creed franchise (Ezio series) - any good official novelizations, or recs for non-AC alternate history books set in medieval Italy?

He does not want to read books about romance, or other books that are mostly about Big Feelings or interpersonal relationships. He doesn't mind it as a minor subplot, as long as he can skim those parts.

He's already read as much Warrior Cats as he cares to. Ditto Wings of Fire. He's "over dragons" for now.

He loves the bad guys, and would probably enjoy books from a villain's POV.

Older kid has the first murderbot book and I'm going to ask her to lend it to him to see if that hits the right spot. I'm thinking maybe The Martian would be good?

Edited to add: He's read and liked Percy Jackson, and his sister owns (and he's read some of) all the Rick Riordan Presents books to date. Also already considering Artemis Fowl.

I tried to find this specific fanfic I read a couple years ago but it’s now been deleted of ao3 and I can’t rember the name so I can’t find any pdfs or epubs: I’ll describe what I remember so if u have any downloaded version PLEAAE SEND IT TO ME ITS DEUVUNG UP THE WALLS THAT I CAN ONLY KIND OF REMEMBER THIS THING

- it was one of the most kudos fic in pacific rim section

- it was long as fuck, minimum 100,000 but I think it was a lot more than that

- it was about those two gay scientists

- it opens with detailed descriptions of each of the scientists childhoods ( the German one had lots of siblings, did some shit in Oxford as a child, he had Atleast 2 siblings and it describe how he got a limp, don’t remember how tho) (the lizard one had alternative parents, I pretty sure he had some childhood in Berlin honestly tho I don’t remember a thing about his childhood)

- they start talking to eachother in passive aggressive emails

I fix things for a government agency.

if you could go back to school, would you?

Probably. I didn't really know what I wanted to do when I went to college, and was far too much a mess at the time to study what I really should have. If I could do it and maintain my expenses, I'd retrain for my preferred profession.

I was paid for over two years to be really good at D&D.

do you think aliens are real?

So... I gotta be honest... I hate this question. This feels as loaded as the "Do you believe in God?" question. We are not aware of the existence of life on other planets, let alone sentient life. There is nothing for me to believe in. Do I hope that there are other intelligent beings out there? Yes. I think it would be really cool to engage in communication with a species that also crawled their way out of the muck and made it to space. I think there's much we could learn from each other about life and the universe itself. But belief is such a loaded term for me as a lapsed Catholic. I do not believe in aliens, but I hope that we'll get to meet some in the future.

Nope! Never needed to learn.

Nah, I've always worked in the public sector in a way that hasn't made it an advisable choice, and I've rarely cared enough about something to mark my body with it.

I'm a soft rock 90s kid who embraced a lot of 2000s and later alternative. I've been on a huge synthwave kick lately. However, because I grew up in the 90s and remember the era of radio, I have a deep affection for Soul and R&B, classic rock, and pop.

Yes? But not in a way that makes me yearn for them.

Probably falling, but that seems like a normal one for survival purposes.

Baseball! I was a shortstop.

I think I finally have a villain for a better Pacific Rim 2 nailed down.

This guy is inspired by what I could find about Uprising before Steven S. DeKnight took over the film - which isn't a whole lot. But it's enough to work with.

For the time being I'm calling him Andrew Hill. He's a billionaire inventor based in San Francisco, which he has rebuilt into a shiny, futuristic city. (Or at least, built parts of it into a shiny, futuristic city. The Exclusion Zone is still there, and it's more crammed with poor people than ever before.) Hill has has patents on numerous new technologies that have been taking off since both during and after the kaiju war. He's also been constructing a number of power generators over various undersea fault lines, which he claims will be able to provide power to the whole Pacific.

He also has a technological innovation he claims can help the PPDC - an implant that will link pilots' brains directly to their Jaegers, giving them a more stable connection that will reduce lag time. He has this type of implant himself, which (so he says) links his brain to a computer system that enhances his thinking capabilities. Hill says that not only would the pilots benefit from a more stable connection to their Jaegers, they would also benefit from the additional brain function.

Hill pitches this tech to the PPDC, but Herc Hansen is wary - pilots would be trusting a machine to do their thinking for them. The PPDC holds a summit meeting to discuss the matter, but it's attacked by a rogue Jaeger that ends up killing Hansen. The PPDC quickly votes in Hill's new tech, and the existing Jaegers are upgraded with it. Any pilots who refuse to take the implants are replaced with ones who will.

Later, Hill activates his power generators, which turn out to be Breach generators. A number of kaiju make it through. The Shatterdomes deploy their Jaegers, but instead of fighting the kaiju, the pilots seemingly attack the shatterdomes, then each other.

Around this point, we find out that Hill's "computer system" is actually a cloned kaiju brain, bought from Hannibal Chau. It's not some paltry brain segment in a jar, either - it's a full-sized pyramidal kaiju brain.

The kaiju that emerge from Hill's generators swim toward San Francisco, where they try to enter some sort of structure Hill built. (I haven't decided yet what he claimed it was for/camouflaged it as.) When the kaiju get into this thing, it will effectively charge them with a bunch of energy, detonating them. This will scatter kaiju blood and all of the toxins it contains to the winds, which is very bad. (And unlike the original film, it's not going to come down to one kaiju vs. one Jaeger - there will be a number of Jaegers fighting many kaiju.)

Okay, I havent really read any bnha in like 2 years, and i hadnt bookmarked any (because at the time I was reading I just didnt utilize the bookmark function. I'm working on fixing that lol) so here is an incomplete list off the top if my head in no particular order

Pretty much anything by @anonymoustwit . Especially the Hero Sense au. Certain people, regardless of quirks, can sense when people are in or going to be in danger. (Deku, bakugo, all might, and todoroki ((and others)) developed this ability. It's not the main focus of all the fics in the series, but it's often there in the background) They're excellent Bakugo fics.

Synapse by WynterTwylight. Space au. But also cyberspace. Deku and Bakugo are drift compatible (but it's not a Pacific rim au). Honestly it's been long enough I dont remember a lot of details but I know it's good

What we lost to the fire. Au where Hisashi is endeavour's brother and little izuku has to live with the todoroki's , meanwhile the bakugos are trying to adopt him (and everyone else is searching for Hisashi who killed inko)

Nightmare house (fanfiction.net) the first mha fic I ever read. Izuku and a few other members of class 1a take shelter in a cabin after helping to capture some villains, but find out that the house isnt so safe and amy end up killing them.
