Writing Wrap 2023:
Below is my Newt Geiszler / Hermann Gottlieb fanfic round-up for 2023. It summarizes all my Newmann fics published in 2023 as well as a preview of what’s to come in 2024!
2023 total published word count: 31,479
Chasing the Rabbit: 5,373 words, rated T At a crossroads regarding his own encrypted personnel file, Hermann must decide whether or not to confirm his long-held suspicions about an event in his past. A story of old wounds, new beginnings, drift compatibility and a shared history with Newton that goes deeper than either of them could have imagined.
Shutterbug: 10,872 words, rated E Post Operation Pitfall and part way through the Black Velvet Rabbits’ world tour, Newt and Hermann find themselves once again in Berlin where Newt jumps at the chance to fulfill a fantasy or two Hermann didn’t know he had. A sexy, standalone sequel to ‘Compositions’ involving a pair of black rabbit ears and a camera.
Something Borrowed: 13,172 words, rated T Newt and Hermann are asked to be in the bridal party for Tendo and Alison’s upcoming wedding alongside Mako and Raleigh. Between planning the stag do, setting up the wedding photoshoot and writing a best man speech, who’s got time to finally admit to your long-time lab partner how you really feel about them? A wedding-centric Newmann getting together story (side pairings: Tendo / Alison; Mako / Raleigh).
Strikethrough: 2,062 words, rated T When Hermann seeks his feedback on a print interview about their joint contribution to Operation Pitfall, Newt jumps at the chance to get the love confession from his labmate he’s been waiting on for years by writing it himself. A WIPWednesday excerpt from a writing project that's been half a year in the making. Hermann Gottlieb: Consulting Detective, a Victorian era Newmann Pacific Rim Sherlock Holmes detective AU. I won't start posting chapters on Ao3 until it's a bit further along in case I need to go back and change anything, but I really wanted to share the intro!
Prelude: The Arrival of the American Doctor
London, 1883
The chill air was suffused with the fresh, sharp pungency of impending rain as Hermann Gottlieb stood waiting on a bustling pier on the bank of the River Thames.
His fingers closed tightly around the letter clutched in his hand, paper crinkling audibly under the movement. He glanced down at the missive again, unnecessarily reconfirming the details which had occupied his thoughts for months.
He stood as if rooted in place, watching absently as the waters lapped the river bank. Owing to his characteristic excessive punctuality, he had arrived early and not moved from his post. He wrapped his coat tightly around himself against the damp as he gazed out over the water.
At long last, the ship came into view, looming closer at a steady clip. His stomach churned with a mounting excitement intermingled with fragments of trepidation.
The day had finally come. After such a long period of suspense, the notion had a marked dreamlike quality.
He waited, transfixed as the ship made dock, not daring to stray from his chosen location which he'd selected for the vantage point it gave him to observe the arrivals. When eventually the passengers began to pour forth from the hold, he felt his pulse leap with anticipation as the sensation of anxious expectation redoubled its efforts.
He scanned every individual with a shrewd eye, systemically dismissing each of them in turn with steadfast certainty as his fingers absently traced over the creases that his grip had embedded into the letter in his hand.
At long last, a passenger emerged onto the gangplank who captured Gottlieb's attention. He observed the new arrival with quiet introspection. He saw the man’s expressive, bespectacled eyes flicking restlessly over the crowd, radiating an anticipatory energy which thoroughly matched his own.
Even from this distance, he remarked how bright the green of the newcomer’s eyes appeared in contrast to the grey clouds overhead and the murky churn of the river. The gentleman’s unruly brown hair was whipped unceremoniously around by the wind coming off the water, framing an affable, friendly face with creases around the eyes suggesting a countenance lit up frequently into a smile.
The passenger wore a white shirt and dark waistcoat paired with a rather peculiar black ascot, uncommonly thin, but of a fine material. It had lost the crispness of a new article; clearly the piece was well-loved and the man’s hand shot up to smooth it no less than twice during his descent onto solid ground. His frame was considerably smaller than Gottlieb had imagined and although he knew them to be of a similar age, the man’s stature and roundish features gave him a youthful appearance. He took an unconscious, small step forward and in the same instant, the man’s gaze locked onto his.
Gottlieb gripped his cane tightly with one hand while the other raised in a subtle display of his correspondent’s most recent letter.
The approaching man broke into a wide grin and quickened his pace down the gangplank, digging frantically into his left trouser pocket, then his right, then finally into the breast pocket of his waistcoat. He produced a crinkled and worn missive that Gottlieb immediately recognized as bearing his own handwriting. A feeling of relief swept through him, although his nervousness did not abate in the slightest.
The long anticipated Dr. Newton Geiszler had finally arrived from America.
As the doctor reached the end of the plank and his foot alighted on the uneven ground beneath, he stumbled. Gottlieb made to dart forward prevent the man from winding up sprawled on the mud below, but the other righted himself before he could end up prostrate.
“Never did quite get my sealegs,” the gentleman chuckled when he was finally in earshot, brushing himself off as a scarlet flush of embarrassment stained his cheeks.
“Dr. Geiszler,” Gottlieb began, inclining forward into a genteel bow. “What a pleasure it is to finally make your acquaintance.”
“Please,” the doctor laughed amicably and took Gottlieb's hand in his own. “Is that any way to greet a friend?” His eyes flicked quickly down and back up again and he added, “even if this is the first time we’ve met in person.”
Gottlieb smiled at this. “Indeed. I hope your journey was not too disagreeable. I have a four wheeler waiting for us. Let us return to the rooms and get you something for your seasickness.”
Geiszler looked up at him with slight sheepishness. “Is it that obvious?”
“Not to most,” Gottlieb inclined his head with a chuckle. “But to me, your state is rather apparent. Do you need a moment before we depart?”
“In all honesty,” Geiszler replied with good humour, “that was far from my first sea voyage, but if I never lay eyes on that vessel again, it would not be too soon.”
A light rain began to mist around them as they collected the doctor’s trunk cases and portmanteaus. As they made their way towards the cab, Geiszler looked around himself in every direction, marvelling at the buildings, his gaze frequently returning to Gottlieb’s with wide eyes and a matching grin.
Gottlieb took a silent moment to observe the man anew. He had clearly attempted to shave shortly before his arrival, however no doubt the unsteady roll and pitch of the boat had occasioned some imprecision and he saw a number of small knicks and cuts and beneath them…
Freckles, he noted. How had those eluded me prior?
When the trunks had been secured, he allowed Dr. Geiszler to step first into the carriage before following behind.
He arranged himself in his seat and looked over at his companion. “Shall we?”
Geiszler nodded with alacrity as Gottlieb leaned out of the window to call up to the driver.
“To 221B Baker Street, please.”

BY JOVE, this is so absolutely jaw-droppingly incredible!!! Your art is so, so, SO spectacular and it’s just beyond amazing to see the boys in their Victorian garb. The deerstalker, coat and magnifying glass just suit Hermann so well and I love Newt's pipe, vest and shirt… put that man in a vest all the time!!! The 221B and the lamp and the LETTERS! Is Hermann examining a piece of evidence… or could it be one of Newt’s letters?!?!?! All while Newt is examining HIM. Thank you so much for this incredible art and I’m so excited that you’re excited for this story and I can’t wait to share more of it.
