"The Universe Crashes Down" c.1999. Not the best art, I was still just getting started. So it's a bit abstract. The story behind this happened a year earlier. My psychiatrist went on vacation for two weeks and left me with no refills for my meds so I went psychotic over the summer of '98. Dude was kind of a flake. Anyway, the first night it became apparent I had been in bed trying to sleep. My visual perception was skewed and I "felt" that the roof over my bedroom was about to close down on me. I ran outside to get away and was OK for several minutes. Then the sky seemed way too close, it was oddly claustrophobic . So I ran back inside. It kept happening over and over no matter what was above me, but outside it was terrifying. The whole of the night sky was suffocatingly too close. I don't remember how that night ended, but I somehow fell asleep back in my bed. I've made 3 paintings about this experience and none of them have lived up to it, it's such a hard thing to explain. Anyway this was the first. By autumn '98 I was better. “But in generally oral, indigenous cultures, the sensuous world itself remains the dwelling place of the gods, of the numerous powers that can either sustain or extinguish human life. It is not by sending his awareness beyond the natural world that the shaman makes contact with the purveyors of life and health, not bu journeying into the personal psyche; rather, it is by propelling his awareness laterally, outward into the depth of a landscape at once both sensuous and psychological, the living dream that we share with the soaring hawk, the spider, and the stone silently sprouting lichens on its coarse surface.”

The shaman holds the ability as the enchanter within these social structures, called on in an instance that ranged from singular healing to great communal outpourings of emotion and psychic power.

Deities carry the weight of an individual ailment to large-scale natural disaster. These effigies and symbols are deposits of human emotion, threads of archived experience and spaces to relate or to placate through offerings.
