Annette (the original Sparks pre-movie 2013 version)
Tumblr media
I've been waiting for this to be released since my early days as a fan! I've not seen enough hype about it out there and I think that is because there's not been a lot of info about this to put things into context for newer fans. So let me remedy this!! (I know they've added some more info in the newsletter but I don't know if everyone gets that.)
At the end of the THOM era Sparks started teasing us about "the new album", which would be in a similar format to Bergman as it was also a full story in audio format. They were fully intent on touring it as a 3-people live theatrical performance with them + Rebecca Sjöwall performing the roles. (They would've liked to tour Bergman as a live performance as well, but logistically that wouldn't work so they were excited about this.) … And then we stopped hearing about it. Until the first news about the film came out!
I've seen people refer to this as a demo or even a mockup album (?), but let me set the record straight: what we have here is the FINISHED Sparks album for Annette! This is what would have been the new album in 2013, the original story for Annette, exactly how Sparks themselves created it (before the film collaboration with Leos Carax). For the film some things were changed, for example I think Carax said that a lot of the irony and humour wouldn't work in a film so that aspect of it was mostly taken out. AND NOW WE GET THE VERSION WITH THAT IN IT! I kid you not I had to be one the phone with a friend to yell about it for 2 hours straight, this is one of the most exciting things to happen!!! (Also, Annette being a literal singing pram? R&R remain the funniest guys alive - this is SO GOOD! I'm so hyped about the beautiful art by Galen Johnson, too! (Who also did the art for the THOM era, and was one of the directors for some music videos over the last few years.))
What we get with this release is Russell as Henry McHenry (and believe me, YOU WANT TO HEAR RUSSELL PERFORM AS AN EVIL GUY), Ron as the conductor as well as some other voices (RON ON VOCALS, THIS IS NOT A DRILL!), and the wonderful vocal performances by Rebecca Sjöwall as Ann/Annette (she was the Hollywood starlet on Bergman and she also sang on Life With The Macbeths - a highly relevant song in reference to this release we're getting, I think, "each murder the ratings soar"). I am a huge fan of the Bergman album, but I'll be very honest and say that while I love their choice of accurate voices to tell the story - the most beautiful voices out there are Ron & Russell's and that's the only thing that might have made me love the sound of The Seduction Of Ingmar Bergman more. And now we're getting that! This is them taking on the roles of the characters they wrote! I love it when they're acting, because honestly they are really really great at it!
[SPOILERS IN THIS PARAGRAPH] Russell Mael - looks like a cinnamon, can actually kill you - will be committing murders, Ron - looks like he could kill you, actual cinnamon roll - will once again not get the girl as the guy portrayed by his brother takes her away from him in more ways than one. (Fuck I still so wish I could've seen this on a stage.)
Also there will be songs we've not heard at all, there will be songs that might sound very different than what we've heard in the film, the story ends differently (and I personally really like that). …I don't know what I'm most excited about, I JUST CAN NOT WAIT. While I'll forever be curious what their stage performances would have looked like, I'll not have to remain curious about what the album and their original version of Annette would have been like. Because here it is!!! :)
I say this without slandering the film, but this version of Annette is the one that's going to hit me hardest. (I am calling my 2013 self to tell them the good news, holy hell!)
As a final note, here's something they've shared in the newsletter:
"Writing in the sleevenotes of this boxset release Ron and Russell Mael have said "...we feel that this earlier version of Annette should be listened to not as the preparatory or demo step toward a filmed version, but rather as a complete and alternative version in itself. We are very proud of it.”

Renfield actually came out a few days ago, but I thought I'd share the trailer for it anyway, as well as the one for The Last Voyage of the Demeter while I was at it. I personally thought the former was really fun and I'll definitely be watching the latter when it releases later this year as well! As also mentioned in the newsletter, Stoker had previously written a different first for the novel that had been cut for publication but can still be read here, @re-dracula have an audio drama podcast that'll premier alongside DD starting May 3rd, and the link to I, Dracula as well as its book trailer can both be found here. As for my own recommendations, please check out the Murray Mysteries podcast—a modern audio drama retelling of Dracula—as well as the Icelandic version of the novel called Powers of Darkness, which is very different from the original!
And of course, sign up for the newsletter and preorder here if you haven't already!

Good morning!
I was just curious about with the donated book copies, is there a particular place/time we should keep an eye out for a giveaway? Is signing up for the newsletter probably the best way? If we win a giveaway book, would we be able to pick which version (both as far as spice level or if it's audio, should that option be available)?
I've been interested in reading Hunger Pangs for awhile, but have had to put it off due to no income. I thought about if I could ask about doing a review trade but wasn't too sure bc I've never done that before and I'm a pretty slow reader. (I go at a better pace if I have both audio and visual options to accommodate for my brain stuff)
Hello! Thanks for asking. My newsletter is actually going to be getting revamped when my new website launches, so I’m currently not using it for that. (I find my current provider highly inaccessible and don't like using it so I’m excited to make the switch.)
Giveaways will actually be run from my blog here, so if you’re following me, keep an eye out for the posts. (hint: there’s one going up later today.)
Though if you enter and don’t win, please do consider a review copy! I don't really mind how long reviews take. And also it doesn't have to be in-depth. You can say “this is great, I loved this!” and that’s it. (or you can say it was garbage if you hated it, idc 😅. Reviews aren’t for authors, they’re for readers.)

Witch Hat News #1: Weird Stories from Space
Tumblr media
This is an archived version of our microfiction newsletter! You can read along on our tumblr, or subscribe here.
Hi there! Do you remember signing up to some newsletter from someone you kinda know on twitter? That's me. I'm the newsletter, and I'm here to letter you some news.
For real, though, I have a lot to say about this newsletter. If you know me (I'm Samantha Calthrop, by the way, not a sentient email, hi) then you probably know that I make comics and TTRPGs, which are met with critical acclaim by my extensive audience of almost nobody. I spent my teens in fandom spaces and my early twenties making standalone games.
In other words, I make things, and I put them online, and not a lot of people see them. C'est la vie.
In recent years, I've been drifting increasingly away from social media, and towards real-world creative spaces. I'm fortunate enough to have several social outlets for my art. Between my local comics group, my university, and my small group of mutuals in Irish journo twitter, I feel accomplished enough to be proud regardless of how many Instagram followers I have. (It's 151, much like the original Pokédex.)
That's the problem with the Internet. Even in the coolest and most supportive rings of Twitter and Tumblr there is nothing to achieve but online fame, which has been famously awful for everyone who has ever obtained it. (I imagine social media to be divided into rings, much like the rings of hell in Dante's Inferno.) There are very few spaces online that feel personal and contained, because by nature the internet is large and completely impersonal.
The consequence is that being an up-and-coming creator is like shouting into the void, except the void has a handful of your confused friends and relations in it, some of whom are giving you the thumbs up.
I was thinking about the lack of digital spaces for exploring any kind of fiction that isn't short stories or published novels, and how many cool things have been made by people I know, which nobody ever sees. I thought, man, I wish somebody would start a newsletter about it or something. Then I realised that I was somebody, and I already had a creative label which I'd been using to publish things already. Then I turned to Luke Sophia and said, "Hey, we're starting a newsletter", and wrote this before I could be stopped.
So I guess this newsletter seeks to fill that missing niche; a small, personal space that celebrates obscure creative projects. We're starting out primarily with creators that we know already - friends, past collaborators, and things we're already fans of. That means right now, it's mainly webcomics, podcasts, TTRPGS, and other types of online storytelling.
To that end, here's your bimonthly dose of local talent. By coincidence, all these stories are set in space, and all of them have a wonderfully weird take on the sci-fi genre. Check it out:
Neokosmos is about the horror of being raised by people you don't understand. This series of illustrated sci-fi stories follow the last living humans, who are being raised in captivity many years after the destruction of the Earth. Neokosmos is a deeply beautiful, deeply weird, and deeply visceral story about love, cruelty, and family between completely different alien species. The first book made me realise I like speculative sci-fi. The second book made me sit on my bed, put my head in my hands, and think about how I spent my early twenties. I can't recommend it enough. Neokosmos is in open beta right now, and is available to read for free online.
Chain of Being is a delightfully strange eldritch-horror-ish audio drama by Cai Gwilym Pritchard. It's set in a mystic sci-fi universe with deep folkloric roots, and it's both written and performed unlike any other podcast I've come across. I recommend listening with headphones just for the editing. Chain of Being is also casting voice actors for Season 2 right now - more info here. They're paid roles, and actors with non-standard podcast accents are encouraged to apply.
Fetch Quest by @toonlynnk is a silly fantasy adventure in a spaceship universe. Unambitious Hugh the human is happy to settle for an NPC career and a lifetime of mediocrity, but is instead dragged into the life of an adventurer-for-hire. A webcomic set in a video game universe, and is promising to be the kind of PG comedy adventure that ends up wrenching your guts out, in the style of Owl House and Amphibia.
Your project here. Do you make art of any kind - visual, written, performed? Are you starting a project or recruiting co-creators? We want to hear from you! Email us at [email protected]. A proper submission procedure will be created if needed, but for now, it's open season - show us anything. Fire away.
That's it for now. All going well, I'll see you in a few weeks!

Kay’s 2023 Wrapped
Well, that about wraps it up for 2023, which means it’s time for my letter summarizing the computer history work that I did in the past year. I’ve been writing these letters since 2016, making this my eighth annual letter. I wish I had started this tradition in 1996, the year that my computer history efforts began when I launched the Digital Antic Project, which grew into Classic Computer Magazine Archive.
My goal this year was to publish six interviews on Antic: The Atari 8-Bit Podcast. I published just one. (It was a good one, with Rodrigo Castro about Atari in Chile. Why not six? My Internet Archive work and, simply, a lack of momentum on interviews. Once the process is going, it’s going! But getting that engine re-started is hard.) My goal for 2024 is to publish 15 interviews, which I fully expect to actually do. Between us over the years, Randy Kindig and I have published 436 interview episodes on Antic. Our collective goal is to reach 500 by the end of 2025. So to keep my end of the bargain, that means I’ll publish 15 interviews in 2024.
Scanning, though! I turned all sorts of rare paper material into easily-searchable digital material at Internet Archive. I scanned a lot of Atari newsletters, including many from Hughes El Segundo Employees Association Atari Computer Enthusiasts, South Bay Atari Computer Enthusiasts, and West LA Atari Users Group.
In other scanning news — let’s talk about MicroTimes. MicroTimes was a California-focused computer magazine that was published from 1984 through 1999. It was there in the thick of it, published in the state that brought us Silicon Valley. I wrote for MicroTimes for a few years starting in 1992. So I am especially proud of this: 41 issues of MicroTimes magazinewere added to Internet Archive in 2023, bringing the collection to 62 issues. Here’s the long-story-short summary of 10 years of effort: I made this happen. I willed it to happen. More issues will be added in 2024.
I also added two more books to the collection of Russ Walter’s Secret Guide To Computers at Internet Archive. The newest additions are hard-to-find editions from 1976, about BASIC programming and computer applications.
My Scantastix project (if you don’t know what that is, here’s a short article describing it) did some great work: we scanned 321 items totaling 22,577 pages. The scans include some rare Microsoft material, even rarer pamphlets and manuals for Compucorp computers (have you ever heard of them? The computer that came with them is on its way to Vintage Computer Federation) and so many Apple II manuals. Check out all the latest additions here.
Also, a weird scanning side-quest happened this year: My friend Cabel Sasser handed me a pile of more than 50 DAK catalogs, which I scanned for him, then he wrote a blog post about them that blew up the Internet for a few days. It’s a fun read.
Once again, I processed and edited videos of the presentations at Vintage Computer Festival West 2023and VCF East 2023. And I helmed a project to rescue audio from VCF West 2003. These were recordings that were made of talks twenty years ago, then the tapes were lost, then found, then given to me, then it turned out that the tapes were recorded terribly. It took a small team of people to get any sound at all from those tapes then turned into something listenable. They include the voices of C. H. Ting, Jef Raskin, John Ellenby, and Gary Starkweather, who have all passed since these were recorded.
When I interview a programmer, I ask the person if they have any source code. I interviewed Jay Jaeger, creator of the Atari Program Exchange version of Space War, in 2016. At the time he said he had the source code… somewhere. I contacted him from time to time to ask about that source code. (I have a “nag list” of people that I contact from time to time to ask them about some material or other.) Patience and persistence paid off. Just a few days ago, in December 2023, he found the assembly language source code and sent it to me to share.
A bit of personal archiving: I write for Juiced.GS magazine, which focuses on the Apple II. I uploaded all of the articles I've written for Juiced to Internet Archive, spanning 2015–2022. There are some interviews, some product reviews, and some nice little reminisces about the old days of microcomputers. (I released them under a Creative Commons license, so if you want to republish an article in a non-commercial computer club newsletter or something like that, go for it. My agreement with the magazine says that they get exclusive rights to articles for a year. So my 2023 articles will be shared online a year from now. In the mean time, it’s a good magazine: if you like Apple II, subscribe!)
My work at Internet Archive as the curator of the Digital Library of Amateur Radio & Communications is certainly one of the reasons I’ve had less time and energy for computer archiving. 2023 was my first full calendar year in this role. I hit my one-year anniversary in August! But there’s sometimes a nice overlap between the two efforts. For instance, in 2023 I archived several ham radio related programs for Atari computers and a few for DOS machines and even a handful for CP/M that were rescued from 8-inch floppy disks.
There’s something else, something that I’ve been teasing for years. In my 2018 letter I wrote “There’s a particular archiving project happening in 2019 that is really big and really important for microcomputer history. I’m not ready to talk about it, but hold your breath and cross your fingers.” Then at the end of 2019 I wrote: “That project depends on the help of one person who has been battling ongoing health issues. It is still very much at the front of my mind, and *crosses fingers* will move ahead this year.” It didn’t, and it couldn’t, but with patience and persistence, it’s finally happening. It’s already started, and I can’t wait to have something amazing to show you in 2024. Keep holding your breath and crossing your fingers just a little while longer.
If you support my archiving work on Patreon, thank you! Also please consider making a tax-deductible donation to Internet Archive, the non-profit online library that hosts all of my scans and interviews.
I hope we all have a pleasant and productive 2024. May your patience and persistence pay dividends.

The con after the con (post report and news!)
Tumblr media
First of all, con attendees please check your Conline email for the Post-Con report!
Secondly,
Tumblr media
Dear K/S friends,
Greetings! The KiScon newsletter is back – and will resume its monthly frequency to bring you all our announcements (events, fic fests, KiScon 2023 progress reports, and more news from the world of K/S) directly into your inbox.
1. KiScon 2022 – A short recap:
We made it through con farr and enjoyed every minute of it! It was an amazing and immersive weekend filled with many wonderful discussions and presentations, plot bunnies roaming freely, and the delights of fanworks shared among us.
We might not have been all together in a hotel for three days, but despite the virtual format and our dispersion throughout locations and timezones the con still defined a time and place for us, a happy bubble, and everything else around it, in that so-called real life out there, was not allowed to intrude much.
A detailed post-con report (pdf file) has been sent out by email to all registered members a few days ago; it includes a bunch of goodies to prolong the squee: the complete playlist of our vid shows, the Round Robin fic, fic recs, and links to several panel notes and presentations, as well as other important download links (e.g. for the con bag items) and info where you can find KiScon year-round. If you were registered for KiScon 2022, but have not received this email, please make sure to check the (fannish) email you used to register for KiScon, check your spam folder, and get in touch with us.
We've also contacted all winners of our competitions and all buyers and sellers from the auction.
Thank you to everyone who helped at KiScon 2022 in any way: thank you to all of our amazing volunteers and panelists, authors, artists, and vidders; thank you to all who created for and donated to the goodie bags; thank you to all who took part in the auction as buyer or seller, and especially to those who donated their proceeds to support KiScon or to charity; thank you to T’Uhura, Easy (MrsAtoz), and Herself_nyc aka NancyKay who sponsored the KiScon 2022 scholarships; and thank you to all who attended and made the con so much memorable fun. You’re the best!
2. KiScon 2023:
As already announced in the Closing Ceremony, KiScon will return for the weekend 3–5 Nov, 2023. Registration will open in January 2023. Stay tuned for the announcement!
This con will again be an online convention, but we are already working on a hybrid (in-person & online) format for 2024, and we are in negotiations with a hotel.
3. Upcoming Events:
Apart from these K/S-filled con weekends we will continue to host events (e.g. Pub Nights, but also competitions and fests) year-round. Our "KiScord" (KiScon Discord server) will stay open and active. There can never be enough K/S in one’s life.
Starting this week, there will be an online event every Saturday, with alternating Pub Nights and Viewing Parties.
Tumblr media
Pub Night – The Afterglow
Aaand the Pub Nights are back! But we'll use Zoom instead of the Discord chat, for better audio and video quality.
Saturday, 26 Nov 2022 11:00 a.m. PST 01:00 p.m. CST 02:00 p.m. EST 07:00 p.m. GMT/UTC 20:00 CET

Cinema of Squee – TOS Viewing Party
Saturday, 3 Dec 2022 01:00 p.m. PST 03:00 p.m. CST 04:00 p.m. EST 09:00 p.m. GMT/UTC 22:00 CET
We are going to watch the two pilots: "The Cage" and "Where No Man Has Gone Before" (restored, unaired pilot version). This takes place on Zoom, much like our ST V viewing party at the end of KiScon.
4. K/S Advent Calendar:
The official deadline for K/S Advent Calendar submissions is in the past (with the exception of a few individual deadline extensions), and it enabled the mods to gather enough works to draw up the schedule for the gradual reveal throughout December. However, you can still submit works (fic, art, vids, podfic, even photos of crafted 3D-objects) to the collection until the end of the year, both as fill for a prompt and as extra work (for an explanation how adding a fanwork to a collection works, please see the FAQs and Rules section on the AO3 collection profile).
If there are works coming in very late in December, they will be revealed at the end of K/S Advent, as a kind of New Years Eve firework. Works coming in sooner will be added to the daily reveals. In any case, the collection will be closed to adding new works on 31 Dec, 2022, 11:59 a.m. UTC!

If you’re not too familiar, or you want to try out different settings to see what’s easiest for your eyes, you might want to ask a friend or family member who is experienced with Android to help you play around with those settings. And this goes for all things on your Android. Don’t spend hours trying to figure something out when you could ask a loved one to walk you through it in a way you’ll understand.Additionally, there are apps that can take it a step further. One is “Be My Eyes,” which helps you connect with someone immediately to help with a task, whether that be adjusting settings on your Android or something else. It’s primarily used by blind individuals, but anyone with trouble seeing can utilize the platform. The other is “Seeing AI,” a free app that utilizes your Android camera. Just point it at what’s in front of you, and it will narrate what you’re looking at in real-time. Or you can take a picture, and it will tell you what you’re looking at. It can even help you count bills, essentially turning visuals into audio.HOW TO TRANSFORM YOUR PHOTOS INTO FUN STICKERS ON YOUR ANDROIDAt the end of the day, your smartphone should make your life easier, not harder. If you’re struggling to see or hear your Android device clearly, don’t just put up with it. Take advantage of the many accessibility features built right into your phone. These tools can provide real-time assistance or even narrate what’s in front of your camera. At the end of the day, your Android device should work for you, not the other way around. With a little tweaking and the right support, you can make your smartphone experience truly accessible and enjoyable. As technology continues to evolve, what future advancements or features do you hope to see in mobile devices to further support individuals with visual or auditory impairments? … .

Common Mistakes When Using Bluetooth Headphones in Singapore
Bluetooth headphones have become a staple for many in Singapore. However, users often encounter a range of issues that can hamper their audio experience.
Discover some common mistakes to help you get the most out of your Bluetooth headphones in Singapore.
Misunderstanding Compatibility
Tumblr media
One frequent mistake is misunderstanding the compatibility of Bluetooth headphones with various devices. While most modern devices support Bluetooth, some older models may not. Ensure your device supports the Bluetooth version of your headphones. For example, ANC headphones often require more advanced Bluetooth versions to utilise their features fully.
Checking your device's specifications before buying headphones in Singapore can prevent compatibility issues. It’s also wise to look for updates or firmware that might enhance connectivity. Many users overlook this simple step, leading to unnecessary frustration.
When planning to buy headphones in Singapore, particularly Bluetooth models, verify their compatibility with your smartphone, tablet, or laptop. This step ensures seamless integration and an optimal listening experience.
Ignoring Battery Life and Charging Practices
Battery life is a critical factor for Bluetooth headphone users. A common mistake is not paying attention to battery levels, leading to sudden cut-offs during use. ANC headphones, in particular, can consume more battery due to their noise-cancelling features.
ALSO READ: Noise-canceling headphones: What they can and can’t do
Regularly checking battery levels and understanding the charging time is essential. Overcharging or letting the battery drain completely can degrade the battery's health. Following manufacturer guidelines for charging practices can prolong the life of your headphones.
Using your Bluetooth headphones in Singapore's humid climate can also affect battery performance. Keeping your headphones in a dry environment and avoiding exposure to extreme temperatures can help maintain battery efficiency.
Neglecting Firmware Updates
Firmware updates are crucial for the performance of Bluetooth headphones. Many users neglect these updates, missing out on improvements and bug fixes that can enhance their listening experience. Firmware updates can also introduce new features and improve battery management.
Regularly checking for and installing updates ensures your Bluetooth headphones remain in top condition. Manufacturers often release updates that address connectivity issues, which is particularly important in densely populated areas like Singapore where wireless interference can be common.
Staying informed about updates can prevent many common issues associated with Bluetooth headphones. Subscribing to manufacturer newsletters or checking their websites periodically can keep you updated on the latest improvements.
Overlooking Fit and Comfort
Fit and comfort are often overlooked when purchasing headphones in Singapore. Many users focus solely on sound quality and features, forgetting that comfort is equally important for long listening sessions. Poorly fitting headphones can cause discomfort and even pain over time.
Trying on different models before buying headphones in Singapore can help ensure a good fit. Consider factors such as weight, ear cup size, and headband adjustability. These elements can significantly affect your overall experience.
Choosing ANC headphones with adjustable features can provide a customised fit, enhancing both comfort and sound quality. A well-fitted pair of headphones can make a significant difference, especially for extended use.
Failing to Maintain and Clean Headphones
Tumblr media
Proper maintenance and cleaning are vital for the longevity of your Bluetooth headphones. Many users neglect regular cleaning, leading to a build-up of dirt and grime that can affect performance and hygiene. This is especially important in Singapore's humid climate, where moisture can cause additional problems.
Wiping down your headphones with a soft, dry cloth after each use can prevent build-up. For deeper cleaning, follow the manufacturer's instructions. Avoid using harsh chemicals that can damage the materials.
Regular maintenance checks can also identify potential issues early. Inspecting your headphones for wear and tear can help you address problems before they become severe, ensuring your headphones last longer.
Mismanaging Bluetooth Connections
Mismanaging Bluetooth connections is a common issue. Users often pair their headphones with multiple devices, leading to connectivity problems. Each time you switch devices, it can create confusion and disrupt the connection.
To avoid this, clear previously paired devices from your headphones if you’re experiencing issues. This step can simplify the connection process and improve reliability. Keeping your device's Bluetooth settings organised can also help maintain a stable connection.
Being mindful of your environment can also mitigate connectivity issues. In crowded places like Singapore's MRT, numerous Bluetooth signals can cause interference. Reducing the number of active Bluetooth devices in such environments can enhance performance.
Conclusion
Maximising the potential of your Bluetooth headphones in Singapore involves understanding compatibility, maintaining battery health, keeping firmware updated, ensuring a proper fit, regular cleaning, and managing Bluetooth connections effectively. These simple steps can prevent common mistakes and ensure a superior audio experience.
