Happy Pride! Time to talk about how DC still hates Midnighter and Apollo despite occasionally holding them up as flashy tokens to say “Look, we do have queer superhero couples! We’re so progressive!”

Perhaps the most insulting thing about DC wanting credit for having such groundbreaking queer superheroes is that Midnighter and Apollo weren’t even DC characters during their most creative and successful years. They were created by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch in 1997 in Stormwatch, published by Wildstorm Comics, which was then an imprint of Image Comics before being purchased by DC a year later. DC didn’t create their success or foster their status as pioneering gay superheroes (that was all due to Wildstorm’s independent and edgy creative team)—if anything, DC fought against it. In 2000, DC vice-president Paul Levitz infamously censored a kiss between the couple because he felt they were “making fun of Superman and Batman.” (It was only a few years later, during Levitz’s presidency at DC, that he apparently didn’t have a problem with Brokeback Mountain jokes in Batman/Superman comics, but that’s another story). And that, really, is the crux of it. DC hates Midnighter and Apollo not because they’re gay, but because they’re gay pastiches of DC’s two most iconic heroes. Progressive as modern DC can be, it’s hard to believe they’ve truly gotten over their discomfort about Midnighter and Apollo’s unsubtle and satirical origins.

There’s also the fact that while the New 52 screwed over basically everybody, it began the DC tradition of absolutely destroying everything good and interesting about the former Wildstorm Universe. Yes, DC gave Midnighter a solo book and then a miniseries he shared with Apollo that centered their romantic relationship (one written by a gay man, no less) but those were still lackluster efforts when contextualized with the fact that the DC versions of these characters are heavily sanitized and depowered, barely a shadow of their former selves (especially Apollo). Wildstorm (in spite of DC rather than thanks to DC) made them the first gay couple to get married in comics and gave them an adopted daughter during an era when gay adoption rights were even more hotly debated than they are now. Post-Flashpoint, DC then broke them up, eventually let them get together again, and then basically stopped using them (and then when they did, like in Superman and the Authority, Apollo thinks Midnighter’s cheating and he’s doesn’t really deny it). A far cry from their glory days as devoted husbands and co-parents in the 2000s! Now they usually only appear in Pride specials, and even then it’s either “we’re using them for laughs and also Apollo’s the housewife teehee” (2025) or “Midnighter’s there but Apollo’s not despite them sharing a cover” (2021). They’re given no mainstream exposure, no meaningful character development, no creative endeavors.

Compare this to Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn being literally everywhere, Batwoman and John Constantine getting TV shows, and regular comic appearances (including solos) by characters like Alan Scott, Renee Montoya, Tim Drake, and Jon Kent. Many queer DC characters are both beloved and profitable. DC’s lack of real interest in Wildstorm’s legacy aside, their underutilization and sanitization of Midnighter and Apollo outside of using them as queer-friendly props when it’s convenient seems to indicate that the old resentment over “lol look we did Batman and Superman except they’re different and gay” really hasn’t died. Their legacy carries baggage that DC editorial isn’t willing to handle.

The Different Eras of "Les Misérables," the Musical: Part 1

In honor of Barricade Day, I'm drawing inspiration from @theseerasures' posts about "The Periodization of Wicked."

By now, I think I've watched and listened to enough bootlegs and cast recordings of Les Mis that I can start to identify the different "eras" of the musical's history, and how they've differed from each other in both content and tone. So I've decided to trace those eras from 1985 to the present day, a little at a time

Of course the real first era of the musical – the real Les Mis 1.0 – was the original 1980 French version of the show, as first heard on the Original French Concept Album, then staged at the Palais de Sports arena in Paris the same year. But since that version of the musical was so very different from its later form, and since five years passed between that production and the premiere of the English version, my focus will just be on the familiar version of the show that premiered in London in 1985.

Les Mis 1.0: 1985-86.

The first year and a half of the original London production, featuring the original London cast and their first few replacements. This was definitely a "work in progress" phase, with many different lyrics and some significant musical differences from the show as we know it today. The notable differences include Cosette's brief solo "I Saw Him Once" (later replaced by her solo verse in "In My Life"), Gavroche's full-length version of "Little People," a completely different version of "Valjean's Confession," and a different ending and different orchestration for "Stars," which was also placed before the nine-year time skip rather than after. Much material was either deleted or rewritten in the early months, until the opening of the Broadway production in 1987 finally settled the show into its "definitive" form. Yet this initial phase didn't fully end in 1987: some of the smaller music and lyric differences remained in the London production through the early '90s, even when no other productions used them. Some were also carried into foreign languages (e.g. the German, Hungarian, and Israeli productions), where translations of the 1985 lyrics are still heard when the show is performed in those countries to this day.

Les Mis 2.0: 1987-1996.

This was the version of the musical that premiered on Broadway and which went on to "sweep the world" in new productions throughout the late '80s and '90s. It was solidified by being preserved in full on the Complete Symphonic Recording in 1988. Its new features included (but weren't limited to) faster and more energetic orchestrations, the show's orchestral opening now consisting of the "Look Down" motif, the omission of "I Saw Him Once," the reduction of "Little People," revised versions of "Stars," "In My Life," "Drink with Me," "The Final Battle," and "Valjean's Confession," and assorted lyric changes. It wasn't an entirely uniform or stagnant phase, however. Small differences in the lyrics effectively became "regional differences" between British and Australian productions vs. American and Canadian productions. (For example, "And so it must be" vs. "And so it has been" in "Stars.") And as time went on, small yet significant new lyrics and staging details were introduced in certain productions. The first UK tour in the early '90s was an especially innovative production, and some of its changes were carried over to the last new production of this era, the 1996 German production in Duisburg.

Les Mis 3.0: 1997-2000.

In honor of the show's 10th anniversary on Broadway, and to breathe new life into the show, the NY production received an overhaul, with many small but significant changes in staging, costumes, lighting, and lyrics, and with the addition of the Well Scene between Valjean and Young Cosette. Soon afterward, these changes were implemented in productions everywhere: London, the US 3rd National Tour (the last of the original three US tours from the '80s still running), and new tours in the UK and Australia. Though, again, this new phase wasn't born suddenly: many of the changes had first been introduced in the early '90s UK Tour or in Duisburg in 1996. Nor was every aspect of it implemented everywhere: or example, the Duisburg production never added the Well Scene. At this point, IMHO, the show also became slightly more melodramatic in tone. In the name of adding more energy, the revised staging featured more wild running around, more violence, and more chaos among the ensemble than before.

Purpose?

Continuing to celebrate the BartKon Renaissance in the modern era. Since the ship has historically been a rarepair since its conception in the 1990's, this fanweek acts as both a way to celebrate the BartKon narrative in DC Comics, as well as engage new fans in our small yet mighty collective.

Why should we participate in this?

Because you like BartKon. Because you saw fanfiction and fanart and shitposts, and decided you wanted to see what's poppin' in the BartKonosphere. All creators are welcome. Our romcom lovers, the darkfic connoisseurs, and of course, our smut specialists.

So how does it work?

The release date for fanworks is from Monday, the 20th of October through Sunday, the 26th of October, 2025. 

You have over four months to write, draw, and create fanworks. On top of fanfiction and fanart, we also encourage meta, essays, ship manifestos, playlists, and poetry.

Please be courteous and treat each other with respect when engaging with fanworks and their creators. If you misbehave, I will be cursing you with gastrointestinal issues and toothaches for the rest of your life.

BartKon of ANY comic book universe is acceptable. If you want to spend the entire fanweek exploring Luthor-El and Bart because you love horrific love, then be my guest! If you want a crazed version of Bart to kidnap Kon from Gemworld, go for it! Let that imagination run WILD!!!

Both safe and not-safe-for-tunglr dot hell tropes are welcome. Just make sure that you post any Mature content on a landing page that doesn't restrict Mature content (like AO3). I don’t want anyone getting their blog banned. We cannot defeat our capitalist overlords, but we can definitely work around them.

This fanweek will not have a dedicated blog. These prompts are free for anyone to use. Because it is a non-traditional, non-monetized, and free-to-opt-in casual event, there will be no mods but moi, no advertising of paid services, and no ratings or participant restrictions. I will open a collection on AO3 in October for anyone who wants their work collated for this event.

In order to ensure that both creators and the audience are making informed decisions about what they engage with, all creators are encouraged to include triggers and any other squick warnings. 

Please utilize the read-more function for fanworks that are longer than 250 words. We're tryna read yer stories, not get spammed with a wall of text. Please Be Courteous.

Can I create/write not-safe-for-tunglr dot hell content?

Yes!!! All creators are encouraged to include triggers warnings, sub-genre specifications, and other warnings in their posts. I will not discourage you from writing your 16k Bart Goes Insane Over Kon fic, but please... Be Courteous and tag your fanworks appropriately so people can make an informed decision about what they're comfortable with engaging with.

What does (X) prompt mean?

Each day has two prompts!! You can either pick a prompt OR you can combine prompts in different ways. I challenge you to let your imagination run wild!

To reiterate, mainstream canon, Elsewords, and AU content is all acceptable! Creativity is key! Have fun!!!

Not-safe-for-tunglr fanwork should be LINKED to whatever landing site the content is being hosted on (Twitter, AO3, etc). This includes both fanfiction and fanart. I don’t want your blog getting flagged bc tunglr hates gay people.

Provide content warnings for all triggers, squicks, and sub-genres. Please list content warnings on your work but do not be discouraged in sharing your work. If a fancop gets on your ass, block them. If they keep bothering you, tell them their mom's a hoe.

You can participate as much as you want!! Maybe you only wanna create for one day? Cool! Maybe you’re an overachieving corporate clown insomniac like myself, and wanna create for every day of the week? Go for it!!!

Closing Remarks

Like all my other events I host, this event, too, is entirely selfish. I've loved BartKon since I was a child when I was first introduced to it in the form of Bart/Clark on Smallville. Although I only recently came back to reading DC's mainline comics, BartKon still holds a special place in my heart even after all these years, and the few who still create and engage in their fanworks inspired me to host a little something-something for our small community.

Take your time, look through the prompts, and get your creative juices flowing! I will be sending out reminders until the go-live date.

i dont think vees active ability needs explaining lol but her passive is inspired by her whole plot of learning to let herself explore the world more (more specifically that one fic where she finds the guitar, its where the name comes from)

"space nerd" skin is referencing the outfit post and how shes, well, a space nerd. "anxious proposal" is referencing the fic where vee proposes, and "rain walk" is referencing, well, their walk in the rain from the very beginning. (ykw the skins are kinda self explanatory too lol)

this wasnt intentional when i was picking which outfits to use for the skins, but i think they also contribute to the general theme of vee coming out of her shell here- new interests she was never supposed to have, love she wasnt supposed to feel, and a world she was never supposed to experience for herself. idk i think its neat :]c fuck you delilah

okay shellys abilities are something im also rlly proud of- her active is based on the og post and how much of a spectacle shelly was, and then how everyone chilled tf out after a while

i also rlly wanted to emphasize how much of a team player she is, and how much she does for her friends. her active isnt rlly great for distracting- its main purpose is to pull twisteds off of someone if theyre about to die/lose health, and her passive is also mainly to help out her teammates.

her trinket is also from the fic where vee finds the guitar! i knew i wanted it to be a dino plushie of some sort (to emphasize the previous pint, but also to add in her love of sewing) and i eventually decided itd be fitting to make it the little pterodactyl she made for vee in that fic :]

"surprise party" skin is from the birthday fic, "mama's girl" is from the mothers day fic (fun fact i used that pose so i didnt have to design the sweater LOL), and "expert digger" is from the outfit post, again all pretty self explanetory

OG Era

Optimus' team includes of his oldest friend and head mechanic Ratchet and his bodyguard/eng specialist Ironhide.

Jazz is a fellow racer who has known OP since they were teenagers. He might not have won as many races as OP but he's very popular thanks to his style and that a video of him singing went viral! He is now a commentator.

Mirage wanted to prove that his skills as a racer came from talent and not his money. But after he won his first race, he realised that he hated being in the spotlight. He'd made freinds with Jazz during their first year together and joined his team instead. He spends most of his time working behind the scenes, getting sponsors and running PR. He still works behind the scenes and sponsors young up and coming races who due to their backgrounds would struggle getting sponsors from bigger brands. He also married Jazz's mechanic Hound.

Elita-One made history to have the first all female team, including her specialist Chromia. There were rumours that she had a romance with Optimus (amongst all the other romantic rumours surrounding Optimus)

Elita and Optimus set up their friends Ironhide and Chromia. The pair have been together ever since.

Prowl is the star racer for the Paxian team. His manager was Barricade who was an arsehole and his mechanic was Tarantulas who would experiment without telling him on his vehicle. Hkm and Prowl have a short lived relationship. Prowls younger brother Smokescreen was the only non-toxic influence on his team. Back in the day Prowl had a bit of a rivalry with Jazz but now they do the commentary together as he gives dry facts and serious analysis against Jazz's less serious persona. Rumours speculated about a romance between them since they were both racers and carried on to them both being commentators. The rumours turned out to eventually be right.

Ultra Magnus was head of the Wreckers team. Kups there too with Wheeljack as the mechanic and Bulkhead was there too maybe as the racer. Breakdown used to be on the team too until he fell head over heels for Knockout, the racer for the Velociteon team. Maybe they ended up saving each other at times if Breakdown got injured so Knockout helped to patch him up then another time Breakdown physically got Knockout to safety after a crash idk. Anyway now Breakdown is on the Velocitron team and now there is a lot of drama between them and The Wreckers.

Grimlock is the star racer for the Dinobot team who are always getting into trouble.

Onslaught is the star racer for The Combaticons. He built the team hismelf and is very proud of that. He is unaware that his teammate Blast-Off is in love with him.

Cyclonus get annoyed having to keep correcting people who assume he's part of the Deception team just because his uniform is purple.

Next Gen Era

Arcee saw Elita as a kid which inspired her to become a racer. She is now living the dream as Elita is her mentor and Chromia her mechanic.

I love Cheetor's friendship with Bumblebee and Hot Rod in Cyberverse so I could imagine them to be the same generation here! He's the racer for the Maximals with his Beast Wars crew as his team.

Springer is the new star racer for the Wreckers. Kup is still there as his mentor even though he should've retired by now. Springer is well liked by the public so he tries to hide the fact that disgraced former mechanic Tarantulas is his parent. Or maybe Springer himself doesn't even know they're related until some reporter reveals it. He could also have a complicated relationship with his other parents Prowl if you wanted to include that.

Sideswipe and Sunstreaker grew up on the streets and in and out of foster homes, getting into trouble by stealing car parts and partaking in illegal drag races. Sideswipe is the star racer sponsored by Lambourgini whilst Sunstreaker does most of the behind the scenes stuff, including design and painting which is his favourite part. Maybe Ironhide is the twins mentor now and was able to whip them into shape.

Bluestreak is Prowl's youngest brother who is now the star racer of the Praxus team. He wanted to live up to his older brother's name. And he was a very fast and precise racer. But in the end decided he'd rather work behind the scenes so he joined Sideswipe's team as a strategist. He was worried Prowl would be disappointed but Prowl couldn't be more proud that he's doing what he wants with his life and for leaving the toxic praxus team. Bluestreak and Sunstreaker start dating at some point.

Breakdown and Knockout love their son Wildbreak very much! But worry about the team he joined the Stunticons being a bad influence on him.

After Onslaught got injured his team mate Vortex took over as head racer. He's crazy! And enjoys flirting with First Aid much to Ratchet's ire.

Non racers:

Red Alert is head of security for the races and Inferno was a firefighter who was working on the on site team in case of emergency which was how they met and are now happily married.

Swindle runs an unofficial betting ring within the racers and their teams since they can't place legal bets.

Smokescreen worked for the Praxian team with both his brothers but then developed a gambling problem. He's left the industry and getting help now though. His brother's are proud of him and he's proud of them.

Strongarm works security at the races. She is often seen arguing with Sideswipe about him not following safety rules. After they both had one too many drinks at a party, Sunstreaker catches them making out in a closet.

Lockdown is the reporter that no body likes becasue he always managed to dig dirt onto people.

Devcon is the reporter people like more because he's fair and not an attention seeking asehole

Time for the Komachi Remaster Takeover! I'm going to be going in order based on what I did for the first Takeover, so we start with the Silly/Oldschool RuneScape Cover. I once again tried to make a RuneScape theme without actually playing RuneScape, and I think I did better this time! I'm going to link the original under the cut, but I like the slower pacing this one has, because based on what someone told me maybe a year ago, RuneScape is slower in bpm than Touhou, so in order for it to actually sound like RuneScape, I slowed it down a lot. I think it worked out!

The only words I have are ghoulish and disgusting. One of the most abhorrent things to come out of Dr. Who. "Also the 'stop watching' critique is bullshit, and everyone who tells me to stop watching knows it is. Along with those who tell me I'm not a real fan. If I hated or didn't care about Dr. Who, my reaction to it being bad would be either happiness or ambivalence, I get upset, because I love it, because I know its potential and I want it to be better. And my unwillingless to accept Dr. Who that I think does not reach the standards of the potential of the show, does actually make me a bigger and better fan than you. If you're willing to accept anything that comes on your screen because it's Dr. Who, because 'we're lucky to have it' or it's 'just Dr. Who' you're an idiot and it astounds me that you haven't been run over crossing the road yet. "And I just wanted to go back to the Doctor torturing a fucking genocide survivor. He is better than this. The defining motif of the Doctor as a character is that he is better than this, that is what makes him a hero. He makes mistakes certainly, but he does not stoop to this level. Hell, the conclusion of RTD's first ever season is literally about him being better than this. Not only is this a heavily out of character moment, not only is this a morally repugnant scene, it's made worse by the Doctor doing it to a survivor of genocide, while the Doctor is also a survivor of genocide, while there is also genocide going on very publically in the world right now. okay so a bit of antonin backstory… for me he’s like ten/fifteen years older than rodolphus (who’s around bella’s age imo. born early 1950s) and he comes from a long line of russian pureblood aristocracy so his family lives in russia and he went to durmstrang. so when tom was on his little world tour, post borgin and burke’s hepzibah smith debacle, he meets antonin, like circa 1965.

and antonin obvs is big on the dark arts (which is cultivated at durmstrang) and i personally think he’s super into like spell-crafting and digging into Magic itself and the way it works (source: the unidentified purple spell he uses on hermione in the battle of the dept. of mysteries. i think he made it himself) and that would’ve appealed to tom who wants to know Everything Ever so they like keep in touch. and when tom is back in england and putting pieces into place for his war, i reckon he gives antonin the pitch and it works, so antonin is also one of the earlier death eaters, roughly around the same time as rodolphus…

now getting properly into it!! i think by dint of them both joining around the same time there’s just this immediate tension between them, immediate visceral hatred. like antonin thinks that rodolphus is an entitled, talentless wanker who’s only been allowed into the death eaters bc of his surname and his money. rodolphus thinks antonin is a stuck-up, pretentious arsehole who’s sticking his nose in places where they don’t belong (namely wizarding britain’s politics).

so everything they do starts just being in order to one up the other. they’re making snide comments about each other in all the death eater meetings. they’re fantasising about killing each other whenever they’re out on raids etc etc (and we’re gonna ignore the like. secrecy vibes of the first war and the fact that most of the death eaters wouldn’t have known who else was a de. to me ant and rodo both climb the ranks fairly quickly and in the inner circle there would’ve been less emphasis on the masked vibe bc basically everyone would know each other anyway)

in my little canon one-shot that i’ve been very slowly writing since like. october. the catalyst that turns their enemies into enemies who fuck is voldemort sending them on like an extended mission just the two of them. and they’re trying to make each other look bad the entire time, maybe trying to kill each other a little (‘i can say you just died on the mission, you’re replaceable sweetheart, the dark lord won’t mind’) and eventually, inevitably, the tension reaches a boiling point and they just have to fuck it out

it’s very violent, and bloody and obvs a complete secret, and in many ways for rodo it serves as another little outlet for his anger, and all his suppressed desire yk the vibe, and it’s about the power dynamics and who’s winning their game, and antonin has this whole thing about bella (‘does your crazy wife fuck you like this, roddy?’ <- calling him roddy bc that’s what bella calls him, always mocking) and rodolphus always punches him when he insults her, and it’s all very sadomasochistic and it drives me insane they’re my boyysss. my actual boys. they’re like my main mlm ship i think and i’ve been keeping them in my heart for so long, it feels so good to let them be free

i actually believe astarion is someone you can rely on in crisis. while his ability to think long-term would definitely improve post-game because then such factors as fear and anxiety paralyzing and clouding the mind (also physical exhaustion and starvation) are removed and he also simply starts having reason and opprtunity to plan ahead and make these things that he wants happen, that's obivously not true for the duration of the game. HOWEVER, he doesn't really freeze flight fight under stress, like he immediately starts scheming how to turn the situation in his favour, to assess the opportunities before him and actually use them. it's not always for the better/what he originally sets out to get as it turns out later, but the seduction plan and eating more tadpoles do grant him protection and better chances at survival, he gets the advantage he desires, so technically he's pretty effective at that. and i don't think this skill is limited to these examples for him.

like he definitely has experience at reacting to high-risk situations and attempting to reduce the harm to himself, he literally spent the last 200 years surviving on a day to day basis and trying to turn the horrible conditions a little less horrible, even if it was about avoiding the torture/redirecting cazador's anger towards someone else/simply recognizing his moods and acting in some way to avoid the attention/etc.

if anything, he doesn't know how to function without stress, but he must be pretty good during shocking life or death situations.
