Hugging Dethklok Hcs
depending on how im feeling after posting this i think i might make a second part including side characters (likely the second post will contain charles abigail and knubbler !! and maybe even some smaller characters that i feel deserve more love) anyways uhuhuh first official MTL post except it.. actually isnt, ive written for knubbler and the dethklok minute host before so yeah very nervous about this since im still trying to find my footing in how i wanna write the characters, so heads up that this might be VERY OOC and what better prompt to do than do one of my "i dont know what to write" ones written with reader as their partner vague mentions of like. sexual stuff but nothing explicit, i still wish to keep this blog as sfw as possible, really just implications of it than anything also some characters had bonus hcs of cuddling so uhuhuh
NATHAN:
built like a mattress, though that can mean anything since not all mattresses are made the same... hmm.. have you ever hugged/cuddled one of those tiny headed kingdom plushies? very firm but not comfortable, i think thats what nathan feels like, but perhaps just a smidge softer. but how would nathan feel? i mean hes very protective of you, and being able to hold you gives him a moment to keep you close. not very affectionate otherwise, but this is nice. definitely the type to do hugs from behind, especially if theres someone trying to flirt with you
PICKLES:
short so theres a good chance youre around his height if not taller and he may or may not feel things about that (both negative and positive but lets save that for another post as i fully intend on keeping this sfw), i always thought pickles of being physically affectionate so him having a hand on you is a common occurrence. probably takes the opportunity to whisper something in your ear, usually something dirty or something incoherent with him being drunk or otherwise under the influence. oh yeah i can easily see him being the type to swing his limbs over his partner while he sleeps and trapping them there
SKWISGAAR:
maybe im cooking something doodoo, but i feel like skwisgaar may or may not struggle with non-sexual stuff, like being purely romantic and innocent with no intent to get your pants off is foreign to him. i whole heartedly believe the reason hes so sexual is due to being in dethklok and being huge, but also because of his mother constantly bringing new people home. so in the beginning he might actually be tense in giving you affection, definitely going to need to take some time. very cold, skinny people tend to be colder ive noticed so totally you shouldnt take this as an excuse to hold him closer (winks)... i DO think he would also have a hand on you a lot of the time like pickles, whether or not those hands have other motives is up in the air
MURDERFACE:
make him take a shower first/j
okay jokes aside, this man is so starved for attention and affection, but he would never ever EVER say it. you guys could be 100% fully alone in bum fuck no where and he still wouldnt say it. but its definitely there in his actions and body language. i think hes warm, and his skin is a little... i mean he canonically has dry skin with eczema, and while i dont have eczema i know what having that dry scaly skin feels like... perhaps we could tie in some self care with the reader helping murderface take better care of himself? i mean it would be one hell of a fight to get him to try but i think its do-able.. tight hugger, kind of lets his arms linger before sliding them down when you eventually pull away. wish i had more but i think murderface is the type to deny affection whilst also deeply craving it
TOKI:
probably the easiest to hug in terms of getting him to accept it, actually i think he might be the most likely to initiate one alongside pickles. very warm, though he sometimes hugs you a little too tight and might even tug you back in if you try to pull away before hes ready. full body cuddles into you when you guys sleep/nap together, arms and legs keep you in place so... good luck trying to slip away before he wakes up. i like to think he fiddles with your hair, too, though im unsure if that fits with his character... i think that, despite still having a love for all things brutal he still likes these smaller moments of just. affection. very clingy and possessive though so keep that in mind, i think he would hold you and physically try to pull you away if someone tries to flirt with you; a lot less subtle than when nathan does it

Ontario pharmacies will officially be able to assess and prescribe medication for 13 common ailments as of Jan. 1.
The service is intended to make access to care more convenient by eliminating a doctor's visit, according to a release from the Ontario Ministry of Health. And it's free for patients with a health card, the ministry says.
"Empowering pharmacists to use their expertise to assess and treat minor ailments helps patients get the care they need sooner and closer to home," Justin Bates, CEO of the Ontario Pharmacists Association, said in the release.
The move comes as Ontario hospitals and clinics have been hit hard with a surge in viral illnesses.
The government first announced in July that it intended to give pharmacists more prescribing power in the hopes of reducing the load on primary care physicians and emergency rooms. While pharmacists said at the time they were glad to see the changes, they also said the changes should have been made sooner and don't go far enough.
"Ontario is taking a very cautious approach with only 13 conditions," Bates previously told CBC News. "We need to expand it."
Here are the conditions you can skip the doctor for:
- Allergic rhinitis.
- Candidal stomatitis (oral thrush).
- Conjunctivitis (bacterial, allergic and viral).
- Dermatitis (atopic, eczema, allergic and contact).
- Dysmenorrhea.
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease.
- Hemorrhoids.
- Herpes labialis (cold sores).
- Impetigo.
- Insect bites and urticaria (hives).
- Tick bites, post-exposure prophylaxis to prevent Lyme disease.
- Musculoskeletal sprains and strains.
- Urinary tract infections.

A friend sent me this post and it sent me down a two-hour rabbit hole so for everyone in the comments who are concerned, let me summarize my findings.
First of all, the original quote states that "The hardness of Kalos's water often exceeds 300 ppm." That doesn't mean that every part of Kalos has water with a hardness of >300 ppm. Let's take a look at a water hardness map of France (taken from Reddit).
France has its own water hardness measurement system, but it's pretty easy to convert to ppm (1 °fH = 10 mg/L aka 10 ppm).
So to translate the key in the top right corner:
Green: Fresh water/soft water (Less than 150 ppm)
Yellow: Hard water (150-300 ppm)
Orange: Very hard water (300-400 ppm)
Red: Extremely hard water (above 400 ppm)
Compare that to a map of the US (obtained from an official 1975 US Geological Survey, though more modern maps have similar distributions)
For context, 1 ppm = 1 mg/L, so no conversions are needed here. America also has a lot of areas with hard water, but doesn't have as many areas with extremely high water hardness.
Water hardness is just a measurement of how much calcium and magnesium is dissolved in water. Typically this is associated with areas that have a lot of water flowing through chalk or limestone, which can both release calcium into the water. Western Europe has a lot of chalky soil compared to the US, so it makes sense they would have more areas with higher hardness levels.
But is hard water safe to drink? Well, yes, if you're not made of pipes and metal. Calcium and magnesium are both necessary for humans, so drinking hard water could help you get some of your daily nutrients! (There are some studies that suggest that frequent exposure to hard water can contribute to dry skin and eczema, though.) Does it taste good? From what I've heard, very hard water can have an unpleasant taste, and most people prefer to filter or soften it before they drink it.
If you are made of metal pipes or you're some manner of water carrying appliance, you may require some form of scale removal treatment every so often. Those minerals in the water like to get stuck on things and build up over time. (It's also one reason why you see buildups on your dishes after washing them. It's gross, but it can be easily removed with vinegar or other treatment methods.
So what's up with Kalos?
If I had to guess, its water hardness distribution is probably a pretty close match to irl France's. Coastal and Central Kalos probably have water hardness levels under 300 ppm, with the exception of Route 8 and possibly Cyllage City, since the rocky cliffs by the sea are likely based on the chalk cliffs of Étretat. Compare it to Route 8 from the anime:
Coumarine City may also have higher hard water levels due to the clay badlands in Route 13, since clay can also carry minerals like calcium. Then, much like in the real world, Mountain Kalos would contain most of the areas mentioned in the original post (areas with >300 ppm water hardness).
Now I'm interested in going back to ORAS to look at the other water lore we're given. Reading up on this has been a lot of fun, and now I'm curious to see if or how the facts mentioned in the Slateport Museum mirror the real-world locations they were based on. Anyway, keep up with your local water quality reports, and don't forget to have your wells checked every year!
Water lore‼️‼️

7 Baby "Hacks" I've Found Most Helpful
It feels weird to call most of these "hacks;" they're mostly preferences. But everyone calls nearly everything a hack nowadays and I got swept up in the trend. I've also seen "hack" posts including similar things to my points in this post, if not exact things, so I'm struggling to find another term for it.
Anyway.
One changing station. I'd seen a video of a mom saying that she kept a diaper caddy (diapers, wipes, rash cream, etc) in every room of the house so she wasn't constantly having to run to the room with the changing table when her baby had a blowout. For the first couple of weeks, I did this too. I kept a pack of wipes and a stack of diapers in the nursery, the living room, and the bedroom so that no matter where I or my fiancé were, we could easily change our son. I decided shortly after that it was too overwhelming to have changing supplies in every room; plus, I lost track of things way more often. I never knew how many packs of wipes we had left or where the hell the diaper cream was, and my son had a particular fondness for peeing all over the couch when I changed him there. So I decided to use his official changing table as the only changing station in the house and it's honestly so much better.
Two beds. In contrast to the last point, having two beds for my son (technically three, if we include the portable pack-n-play) has been very useful. We were gifted a crib/changing table combo that we keep in the nursery and use for his daily naps. We were separately and unexpectedly gifted a playpen/bassinet combo that we keep in the bedroom for nighttime sleep. That way as soon as he cries (or my alarm goes off on nights he sleeps past his feeding time), I'm up and tending to him, and he doesn't have to wait for me to drag myself down the hall. It also helps my anxiety to be able to peek over to the other side of the room and check on him versus staring at the video screen of my baby monitor.
Minimal bottles. When I first unpacked all of the bottles we received as gifts and counted only five, I wondered if I should buy more. I soon discovered, however, that having a limited number forced me to regularly wash them, keeping them from getting nasty and piling up in my sink until I had time. Washing used bottles is now part of my daily morning routine. I further proved this to myself when I was gifted a breast pump that came with about six bottles and, during a few days of exhaustion and executive dysfunction, used all of them and left them sitting on my living room table. Trust me; minimal bottles are your best friend. Unless maybe if your kiddo goes to childcare, then you might want some extra. I'm a work-from-home mom, so I don't know.
Multiple breast pumps. Despite the fact that having multiple pumps enabled my lazy bottle pileup, having options was a blessing. I started off with a Spectra, which if you're unfamiliar is a radio-sized machine that requires being plugged in in order to work. My next pump was a Zomee, which was much smaller and more compact as well as rechargeable, so it was much easier to use. My current favorite pump is wearable, and though it's bulky and a little awkward to keep in place while I'm moving about the house, it's by far the most convenient because I can stuff it in my bra and not have to sit in one place holding the flange to my boob. But my point is that I think trying (if you're able, breast pumps are expensive and I'm grateful to have been gifted the first two) multiple styles is important to ensuring you have a pleasant breastfeeding journey (if you choose to breastfeed - we don't bottle shame here).
Baby laundry detergent. When I first brought my son home, I washed his clothes and blankets separately but used the same detergent as the rest of us. It was plain old Tide, so I didn't think it would cause any issue. it took me longer than I'd like to admit to realize that my detergent was giving him eczema breakouts, so I switched to a baby specific brand. Between that and baby eczema lotion, his breakouts cleared right up. I'd toyed with the idea of switching everyone in the house to baby detergent, but the one I bought was more expensive than Tide, and there are three adults in the house, so the expensive baby detergent would be gone quickly. It's more cost-efficient for us to just buy both.
Hangers. In my current residence, we don't have a standard washer and dryer, because we live on the second floor with a narrow staircase and don't want to risk our lives carrying a washer and dryer upstairs. Instead, my ex-husband, when he lived here, bought a portable washer and spinner from Amazon. I'm sure you've seen it - they've been all over TikTok and Facebook Marketplace. It's not my favorite thing in the world, but that's not the point. It includes a spinner, not a dryer, so we still have to hang our clothes up to air dry them. I bought tiny hangers for my son's clothes, and honestly, it's much easier than having them folded up in a dresser. Putting things away (clothes, dishes, groceries) is the bane of my existence, so I often leave my own laundry hung up in the laundry room instead of packing it into a drawer. Plus, babies spit up a ton, and blow outs are common, and it's much faster to pluck a onesie off a hanger than it would be to go through a dresser.
Frozen pacifier. My son started teething early. Before I started buying proper teethers, since he's only 3 1/2 months old and can't hold a teether in his mouth yet, I decided to stick his pacifiers in the freezer. He absolutely loves it. When his gums are bugging him, a cold pacifier soothes him immediately. It obviously doesn't stay frozen for long, since there's no liquid in it to keep cold, but the initial cold is enough to distract him. His pacifiers now live in the freezer. I alternate them one at a time - whenever he needs a cold one, I stick the one he's currently spitting out back in its place.
I hope some of these "hacks" prove useful to you. Feel free to comment with your own!

Skin and supplements
I wrote a very long post earlier this morning discussing this.
Thankfully my skin is a lot better after using the steroids. Like I said I don't like using them and only use them when I have an emergency. I am hopeful they will remain this way for a while, now that it's warmer and less dry outside as well. I'm more hopeful now after seeing my skin heal. And even if my skin isn't perfect now, I'm still going to do microbial testing (both skin and gut) to find some solutions. I know this will be treated with gut supplements and a topical antibiotic if needed (I'll ask my dermatologist of an anti-inflammatory/anti-bacterial hand cream she can recommend because I'm sure she would know).
I also had pizza yesterday (with tomato sauce) and my hands did no flare up, yay! I did NOT take any anti-histamines and did not apply steroid creams until 12 hours later, and I would have had a flareup before 12 hours if I ate tomatoes. Tomatoes are NOT the problem, I've eaten tomatoes my whole life (with eczema) and never flared up after eating them. They're not the culprit. Though the fact that I'm reacting to a food in this manner means that I have a deeper root cause which is likely gut inflammation due to dysfunction and/or dysbiosis. Tomatoes are high in salicylates which are inflammatory and also high in histamine. I do have food allergies and mild eosinophilia, and I'm sure my eczema is linked to that.
I'm already taking a gut health supplement which is much better than taking nothing, though I still want to find a supplement more targeted to my personal gut issues (whether it be low HCl levels, not enough digestive enzyme, if I need l-glutamine for intestinal permeability, and which bacteria and yeast strains I can personally benefit from. But I have no ides what my issues are and I've never been officially tested. And I know the GI MAP test can help with identifying microbes and intestinal permeability, but I'm not sure how stomach acid and digestive enzyme levels can be identified. I'm sure enzymes can be measured on a pancreatic lab panel, and there is an online at home test where you can test your stomach acid levels by drinking 8 oz of water with 1 teaspoon of baking soda and waiting how long it takes until you burp. It sounds suspicious and maybe unsafe and I doubt it's that accurate. I can probably get similar results from drinking soda. I don't want to take risks, but I know HCl supplementation can be helpful because stomach acids can kill pathogens you swallow that can potentially infect your GI tract and cause inflammation if not killed. I'll speak to my functional medicine doctor about this.
And regarding my skin microbiome, in hopes I don't test positive for staph, I want to do a skin culture test at my dermatologist's office. I'm worried that my request may be denied, but I'll insist regardless. Everyone has microbes on their skin, but people with eczema have staph. aureus which can cause inflammation and disruption of the filaggrin protein which functions to promote skin barrier integrity.
I'm also happy I discovered Jennifer Fugo because I learned so much about the root causes of eczema, but in a scientific way that avoids all the pseudoscientific and wacky unsubstantiated stuff you see on the internet. She says detoxing isn't needed because your body already detoxes itself, which is true. I learned that I don't need to do a liver detox and the way I can protect my liver is to avoid consuming a lot of alcohol and fatty/sugary foods and be eating and supplementing with key nutrients, minerals and amino acids like magnesium, molybdenum, sulfur, vitamin B6, glycine, glutamine, and bioflavinoids which support its intrinsic detoxification biochemical pathways. I feel like regularly taking a multivitamin and magnesium glycinate as well as eating healthy foods rich in bioflavinoids can help here and I can avoid all the ciilantro, chlorella, milk thistle, and dandelion supplements because that can cause a headache and even some side effects I don't want to deal with (I got sick and nauseous last weekend and I believe it's from the liver supplement).
I also learned of the importance of healthy gut function and a microbiome balance. I know gut health is overhyped on the internet and gut issues are not the root cause of every condition out there. However there is definitely a heavy link between gut health and skin health. Skin health relies heavily on detoxification functions of your internal detoxing organs like the liver and gut and gut aspect of this process relies on proper gut function and microbiome balance.
So I'll speak to my functional medicine doctor about gut function and microbiome balance, and my dermatologist about a skin culture test.
The testing and healing process may take a while, but that's okay if I can manage my skin inflammation with topicals temporarily. So I'll definitely ask my dermatologist for some tacrolimus and any anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial hand creams because I don't really know of any. But I should have both. After talking with my doctors and doing the testing, I will look for a hand cream (hopefully I don't test positive for staph) and a gut health supplement that will support my gut function and microbiome depending on where I have issues and that it can be targeted to my own gut issues. I'm taking one right now and I don't know if it's most compatible for me, but again it's better than nothing.
I will heal, I will become a healthier person and will prove people wrong. Just like how I proved my dentists wrong last year, I will prove dermatologists wrong this year. Eczema is not a skin disease, it has internal root causes.

I'm not used to posting things like this, but this has been on my heart for a while now.
This is Shanyna Isom. You might have heard about her from the TV series Diagnose Me on Discovery Life. Currently, she is the only person in the world suffering from the disease known as "SAI".
In 2009, Shanyna (who at the time was a law student at the University of Memphis) suffered a massive asthma attack. In the emergency room, she was given a large dose of steroids; this triggered an allergic reaction, which caused severe itching and hard painful black scabs to develop all over her body. Doctors treated her for virtually every condition, from eczema to Staphylococcal infection, without success. Finally, it was discovered that her hair follicles had begun producing fingernails instead of hair. Shanyna consulted many specialists, but her condition remains a mystery.
While her segment on Diagnose Me gives the impression that Shanyna was cured, this is not the case AT ALL. She suffers from constant pain; the disease attacks her joints, and she is unable to walk without a cane. The condition has also begun effecting her eyesight. Her symptoms can be (and, for a time, were) brought under control by monthly treatments at Johns Hopkins Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland. However, her condition leaves her unable to work, and her mother has had to leave her job in order to care for her daughter full time; as such, neither of them have a steady source of income. Currently, the family owes more than $500,000 in medical bills, and have exhausted all possible avenues for financial assistance.
Please, help Shanyna and her mother.
If you'd like to donate money, you can do so through her official website, Here.
You can also donate through her GoFundMe, Here.
If you can't donate, please reblog and share. If you believe in the power of prayer, please pray that Shanyna and her family will find the help they need, and that she will have healing and relief from her pain and suffering.

So I'll have, like, a patch of skin that's SUPER ITCHY, like "it feels like I am actively being bitten by mosquitoes at all times" itchy, sometimes multiple of them
Applying layers of steroid creams will sometimes do jack shit or make them temporarily worse (especially if I rub them in too aggressively?), BUT in the long run make the worst part of a flare-up shorter
Scratching them until I'm raw provides immediate relief that sometimes lasts for hours but actively makes the itchiness worse in the long run
Anyway. Just love how stress and my cycle (which is officially beginning to be all over the place, yay perimenopause) makes this worse.
I *was* thinking of wearing a miniskirt to go dancing tonight out of nostalgia if nothing else, but I have patches of skin on each thigh that I've scratched too much! And even if I decided I didn't care how it looks, the hem of a skirt fluttering/rubbing on the spots will make me INSANE with itching. But also, the thin chub-rub shorts from Snag seem to make them itchier too, somehow???
(I actually think that's like. The worst part. Trying to figure out what the fuck is making things worse so you can rule them out. It's enough to drive a person ABSOLUTELY INSANE.)
and I keep tagging these posts "eczema" because it's the only thing I can think of, and when I go to the doctor (which Iv'e done TWICE) to be like "hey I'm not sure this is eczema, considering I have oily skin, not dry skin," they're just like "lol. here's some steroid cream." Hell, the doctor at my last visit (which was at urgent care, a few months ago) wrote in my notes that I clearly had a healing patch on my chest WHEN I SAID THAT WAS ACNE AND NOT THE RASH, and her automatically-written advice notes were all "don't forget to use heavy emollients and don't use soap more than necessary!"
I
HAVE
ACNE
I fucking told you I did.
And I hate how angry this post is. But I"m so frustrated. I'm tired of being itchy ALMOST ALL THE TIME.

I can feel my anxiety medication wearing off so before I re-up it, because if ever there was a day that I just need to keep it going - I feel the need to scream into the void first.
I haven’t talked about my personal life that much save for a few depressive, anxiety-fueled rants before, and maybe this is just one more of those but longer. But today was the last day in a long saga of days that has just made me....really question *everything*. It’s probably the closest I’ve ever felt to being absolutely done.
So the last year and a half has been quite the roller coaster and occasional hell for me, as I imagine it has been for everyone else on the planet. Everyone has their own 2020 story to tell, everyone’s is important, so I haven’t made a huge deal out of mine. I’m luckier than most. So this isn’t a post where I’m going to go on and on about how rough I’ve had it, etc, etc. This is just going to be about...me. The facts, as seen by me.
In March 2020, my work began efforts to roll out a remote work plan that I qualified to start early due to being immunocompromised thanks to a fun little auto-immune disease called ulcerative colitis. I’ve been diagnosed since I was 18, so basically half my life, and the medication I had been on then, Remicade, was one I’d been using for the last decade with absolutely no issues except maybe I get really tired and like naps afterwards. All of that went smooth. I felt relieved that I, at least, was going to be at home. One of my roommates, also a co-worker, was able to work out the same situation so we didn’t even need to deal with transportation for her until the official lockdown.
And then a week - possibly less, my memory is hazy - my roommates (my then-best friend and her brother) got into a screaming fight of such epic proportions that I had an actual mental breakdown in the middle of (first for me). I remember hiding in my room with my laptop - I was still trying to work for some reason, I do remember eventually telling my boss I had a family emergency so I could log off - I remember calling my mother in a panic, and then I remember waking up at my parents’ house about 6 hours later and finding out that my mother had told my former roommates to gtfo, which I did not attempt to rescind (not at the time, because apparently I was there when it happened but I don’t remember this, and not later) because I knew living with them was no longer feasible for a number of reasons which I will not go into. I’m still dealing with five years of mental abuse and trauma on that one.
By the first week of April they were gone, and I was able to busy myself for the next few months with making my place habitable for one person again, which was a good distraction. And then September came around and I started to notice these, well, patches on my skin. At first I thought it was just eczema or dry skin irritation, it happens sometimes. But with each month they got worse and worse, until December finally rolls around and the only conclusion anyone can come up with is that my trusty Remicade, which had successfully kept my UC in check for a decade, had finally decided to stop playing nice with my body and I was having a “psoriasis-like” reaction. So for the first time in a long while I was starting the medication shuffle again, steroid creams and a new UC medication that took nearly 4 months to get approved. I’m still not recovered even though I’ve been off of Remicade for 7 months now. It takes 6 months for that stuff to fully work its way out of a system, so the reactions didn’t stop until a few weeks ago and I’m still struggling to heal. I’d say it’s about 75% better than it was, but showers still suck, pants also suck, and I can’t tolerate temperatures higher than 70 degrees (hi summer, you suck). Also during this time I got the COVID vaccine (woo!) but seriously, if not for remote work I probably would have lost my job. I used up most of my sick leave in the beginning of the year because I couldn’t move without pain, even to sit at the computer for 8 hours. I also have a ton of PTO, but my boss told me that I couldn’t necessarily use it for sick leave (news flash for me) and again, could lose my job if I tried to use it too much. So trigger my anxiety. A lot.
Fast forward. In one week my office is reopening for 50% capacity, which apparently means to upper management that we have to all work 3 days a week in office, 2 days remote, which doesn’t match the math but whatever. They’ve also stopped screening temperatures, have nixed the social distance requirement, and are only requiring masks for the unvaccinated - but aren’t requiring anyone to say whether they are or not. Needless to say, not exactly the best reassurance for my still-immunocompromised ass, not to mention the dress code will murder my skin. So I ask about continuing remote work and get told I need an ADA accommodation. Okay. I get the paperwork and pass it on to my GI; I was already on FMLA for my UC, figured this wouldn’t be that different.
Except my GI has refused to sign the paperwork, saying there’s no medical reason for me to continue remote work. Despite still not being recovered from the skin reaction I got back in December from the Remicade, despite finding information that Remicade potentially interferes with the vaccine, I’ve been told to just adhere to social distancing and mask-wearing despite my employer not requiring that of anyone else. And with all the information about the delta variant coming out.... yeah, I’m scared. Probably paranoid, probably anxious. I have no idea how I’m going to get through a work day without having to medicate and I won’t be able to function if I have to do that. i see my psych before RTW-Day, but only a few days before.
My last chance is that the dermatologist I’m seeing on Wednesday might be able to fill it out based on my condition, but at the moment I’m in a cycle of panic that I’m going to be told it’s Not That Bad and not get taken seriously. Which is a feeling I’ve been having a lot lately. I know it’s partly the depression and anxiety ramping itself up, but I just don’t know what to do now. All I want to do right now is press the restart button. Sell my place, relocate to a new place so radically different from where I am now that I can’t even compare it, start over. Get a puppy, write a novel, not be in $33k worth of debt. This wasn’t where I’d hoped to be at 36, and now it feels like it’s going to be another 5-6 years before I can get there. If I can get there. It seems like another lifetime.
Anyway. That ends my void screaming. TLDR, I have to start working in the office again in a week, I’ve been told by my GI that my auto-immune disease doesn’t qualify me for an ADA accommodation to keep working from home, my anxiety is now living with me instead of me living with it, and my last shot is a dermatologist I’ve never met before.
#personal#anxiety#depression#immunocompromised#COVID#psoriasis#but not exactly psoriasis#Remicade#ulcerative colitis#someone please just get me out of here

An Uncrowned Tudor Queen, the Science of Skin and Other New Books to Read
England’s most notorious dynasty owes much to the trials of a 13-year-old girl: Margaret Beaufort, Countess of Richmond. On January 28, 1457, the young widow—her first husband, Edmund Tudor, had died at age 26 several months prior—barely survived the birth of her only child, the future Henry VII. Twenty-eight years later, in large part due to Margaret’s tenacious, single-minded campaign for the crown, she saw her son take the throne as the first Tudor king.
Margaret never officially held the title of queen. But as Nicola Tallis argues in Uncrowned Queen: The Life of Margaret Beaufort, Mother of the Tudors, she fulfilled the role in all but name, orchestrating her family’s rise to power and overseeing the machinations of government upon her son’s ascension.
The latest installment in our series highlighting new book releases, which launched in late March to support authors whose works have been overshadowed amid the COVID-19 pandemic, centers on the matriarch of the Tudor dynasty, the oft-conflicting science of skin, a Pulitzer Prize-winning poet’s tragic past, the twilight years of Japanese isolationism and a Supreme Court decision with lasting implications for the criminal justice system.
Representing the fields of history, science, arts and culture, innovation, and travel, selections represent texts that piqued our curiosity with their new approaches to oft-discussed topics, elevation of overlooked stories and artful prose. We’ve linked to Amazon for your convenience, but be sure to check with your local bookstore to see if it supports social distancing-appropriate delivery or pickup measures, too.
Uncrowned Queen: The Life of Margaret Beaufort, Mother of the Tudors by Nicola Tallis
Margaret Beaufort had little reason to dream of the throne. The Wars of the Roses—a dynastic clash between two branches of the royal Plantagenet family—raged on for much of her early life, and more often than not, her Lancastrian relatives were on the losing side. Still, she managed to find favor under Yorkist king Edward IV and his wife, Elizabeth Woodville, embedding herself in the royal household with such success that she was named godmother to one of the couple’s children. All the while, Margaret worked to restore her son, Henry, then in exile as one of the last remaining Lancastrian heirs, to power.
Edward IV’s untimely death in 1483, compounded by his brother Richard III’s subsequent usurpation of the throne, complicated matters. But Margaret, working behind the scenes with the dowager queen Elizabeth and others who opposed Richard’s reign, ultimately proved victorious: On August 22, 1485, Henry defeated Richard at the Battle of Bosworth Field, winning the crown and, through his impending union with Elizabeth of York, daughter of Edward IV, uniting the warring royal houses after decades of civil war.
Nicola Tallis’ Uncrowned Queen details the complex web of operations that resulted in this unlikely victory, crediting Margaret for her son’s success without lending credence to the commonly held perception of her as a “religious fanatic who was obsessively ambitious on her son’s behalf and who dominated his court.” Instead, the historian presents a portrait of a singular woman who defied all expectations of the era, pressing “against the constraints imposed by her sex and society, [and] slowly demanding more and more control over her life, until the crown on her son’s head allowed her to make the unprecedented move for almost total independence: financially, physically and sexually.”
Clean: The New Science of Skin by James Hamblin
A shower a day does not keep the dermatologist away—or so James Hamblin, a preventative medicine physician and staff writer at the Atlantic, argues in his latest book. Part history, part science, Clean addresses the many misconceptions surrounding skincare, outlining a compelling case for showering less and embracing (figuratively speaking) the many naturally occurring microbes found on the skin. To demonstrate his point, Hamblin swore off showering for the duration of the book’s writing; as Kirkus notes in its review of Clean, “He did not become a public nuisance, … and his skin improved.”
The modern personal hygiene and beauty industry owes much to post-Industrial Revolution developments in germ theory, which identifies microbes as vectors of disease that must be destroyed or avoided. But certain bacteria and fungi are beneficial to the body, notes Hamblin in an excerpt for the Atlantic: Demodex mites, for instance, act as a natural exfoliant, while Roseomonas mucosa blocks the growth of another bacterium linked to eczema flares. And though parabens ensure the longevity of commercial products including deodorant, shampoo, toothpaste and lotion, these preservatives also eliminate helpful microbes, upsetting the balance essential to healthy skin.
“Ultimately,” writes Kirkus, “Hamblin argues for more skin microbiome research and greater biodiversity in all aspects of our lives, underscoring the value of pets and plants and parks to enhance our lives—and those that live in and on us.”
Memorial Drive: A Daughter’s Memoir by Natasha Trethewey
When Natasha Trethewey was 19 years old, her abusive former stepfather murdered her mother. This tragedy echoes throughout the former United States poet laureate’s work: In “Imperatives for Carrying On in the Aftermath,” she describes “how abusers wait, are patient, that they / don’t beat you on the first date, sometimes / not even the first few years of a marriage,” and reminds herself not to “hang your head or clench your fists / when even your friend, after hearing the story, / says, My mother would never put up with that.”
Gwendolyn Turnbough’s killing was a pivotal moment in the young poet’s artistic development, but as Trethewey writes in her new memoir, she avoided confronting painful memories of the murder for decades. With the publication of Memorial Drive—a searing examination of the author’s upbringing in the Jim Crow South and the disastrous second marriage that followed her white father and African American mother’s divorce—she hopes “to make sense of our history, to understand the tragic course upon which my mother’s life was set and the way my own life has been shaped by that legacy.”
As Publishers Weekly concludes in its review, Memorial Drive is a “beautifully composed, achingly sad” reflection on “the horrors of domestic abuse and a daughter’s eternal love for her mother.”
Stranger in the Shogun’s City: A Japanese Woman and Her World by Amy Stanley
Tsuneno, the central figure in historian Amy Stanley’s debut book, was “the loudest, the most passionate” child of a 19th-century Buddhist priest named Emon. Restless and plagued by bad luck, according to Lidija Haas of Harper’s magazine, she endured three failed marriages before abandoning her tiny Japanese village in favor of the bustling city of Edo, soon to be renamed Tokyo. Here, she worked a variety of odd jobs before meeting her fourth and final husband, a mercurial samurai named Hirosuke.
In addition to presenting a portrait of a city on the brink of a major cultural shift—Commodore Matthew Perry sailed into Japan and demanded the isolationist country reopen to the West in 1853, the year of Tsuneno’s death—the work conveys a strong sense of its subject’s personality, from her stubborn independent streak to her perseverance and self-described “terrible temper.” Drawing on letters, diary entries and family papers, Stanley revives both the world Tsuneno inhabited and the “wise, brilliant, skillful” woman herself.
To read Stranger in the Shogun’s City, writes David Chaffetz for the Asian Review of Books, is to “hear the sounds of the samurai trampling through the city, smell the eels grilling in tiny food stands, [and] see the color of posters for Kabuki performances.”
Deep Delta Justice: A Black Teen, His Lawyer, and Their Groundbreaking Battle for Civil Rights in the South by Matthew Van Meter
Journalist Matthew Van Meter’s exploration of Duncan v. Louisiana, a 1968 Supreme Court case that affirmed defendants’ right to trial by jury, is decidedly “timely reading,” notes Kirkus in its review. Arriving amid a global reckoning on police brutality and criminal justice, Deep Delta Justice demonstrates “how a seemingly minor incident brought massive, systemic change,” according to the book’s description.
The legal battle in question began in 1966, when Gary Duncan, a 19-year-old black teenager, was arrested for placing his hand on a white peer’s arm while attempting to de-escalate a brewing fight. Duncan requested a trial by jury but was denied on the grounds that he was facing a misdemeanor, not felony, charge of simple battery; a judge sentenced him to 60 days in prison and a $150 fine.
Duncan appealed the verdict with the help of Richard Sobol, a white attorney at New Orleans’ “most radical law firm.” As Van Meter writes in the book’s prologue, the two-year legal odyssey—reconstructed through first-person interviews and archival documents—eventually affirmed “the function of civil rights lawyers in the South and the fundamental right to a trial by jury” in all cases carrying potential sentences of at least two years.

The Body of a Black Autistic
I feel like an uninvited guest in my own body, not seeing through my own eyes but rather watching a reality that I'm not a part of play out in front of me. I recognize the person in the mirror as me from the indentation on my forehead from some careless fall as a child. The rich mystery dark skin that as a child I tired scrabbling raw for I thought of it as dirtier. I love my long slightly feminine eyelashes that I got from my mom, my large thick lips which I owe to my ancestry. The disconnect I feel come not from a dislike but what I can only describe as mechanical. I feel like my body is a machine that I'm operating but know not the function it designs to perform. I know not what my meaning is or purpose, and with this very thought I think why I haven’t found a church to take me or a place I am need. I have hands and yet haven’t built anything of use, feet but have gone nowhere. I am blinded but not cause of a lack of slight but rather I choose to cover my eyes during the scary parts. I have come to understand fear as simply not knowing but my ignorance is of my own choosing. I have an Instagram but rarely if ever I post not out of modest but of what it revealed of me a part that I don’t always recognize of in the body I’m in.
Now is probably as good as any to state that while I understand that some might have described similar feeling by those in the train’s community. I never feel that I was born to the wrong gender, I say this because I don’t want to cheapen any understanding of that trains people have about they own identities. Finding one own identity for many is a life journey for accepted and if you know that the body you in isn’t the one you meant to be in then the courage come when you can accepted your truth. Some may find another explanation if not deny than it surely Depersonalization disorder and if I was to simplify it a medical diagnosis where one feel disconnected from one’s body. I already WebMD it and while I sure studies have been done; I feel this to be a lazy diagnosis. Let me go more into detail, this feeling isn't the same as depression for I have at different points in my life been depress I know the different. When I was deep in a depression state, I thought of suicide but then feeling that if this body isn't mine, I would be trap within it behind closed eyes and a darkness that is endless. I believe in a soul but much like taking your car off a bridge into the ocean if the windows are roll up then you are trap, bury beneath the ocean unable to escape.
I never quite know what to do with my hands putting them in my jacket packets in the winter months and during the summer taking hold of them in one another. For most of my life I have been left off cop’s radars, being pulled over only once for a burned-out headlight. I tied remembering where my hands were at but as I reward back, I found that most of the tape to be blank. Even when it just me I find that I will at times sit on my hands so of to not reach for some idea thing. Smartphones have made it a lot easier to busy my hands as I scroll through my Twitter feed. Being black and on the spectrum is of course reason to be cautious as society see my race as a threat and cops see my actions as suspicious. People who are on the autism spectrum tend to be view as suspicious add on being black then you’re also now in the eyes of a cop a threat. In this age of smart devices, it a bit easier hiding in yourself behind a screen and simply being as everyone else.
The public show symptoms of autism but being black can still single you out and get you shot. A phone is a gun and I constantly remind myself this when pulling out my phone. It happens all too often to be by chance and giving that most diagnosis of African Americans come later than that of they white peers. I'm lucky cause I can be self aware of traits reminding myself to make eye contact and to take my hands out my packets when walking into stores. American will quickly remind you that you’re other forcing you to learn whites feeling of uncomfortable is a sign that you should then feel endanger. Not the same when you on the spectrum and black. Because you’re unable to pickup on other body language you’re unaware that jumping up flapping your arms is seen as a threat by them.
I led a tour of my body with my hand recognition every scar, every line, as mine own. It's not a comfort that one feel by the sense of a touch but more as so an invading of another space. Every scar I leave upon it feels like a violation of another not me. Growing up I played with actor figures and though they body differ I knew that the arm connection to the shoulder. In this connection I was able to identify each part of each one of my action figures. Matching the plastic green legs to that of plastic green hips, their simply shaped together and became one. If I had to pin an exact extremity that I feel most disconnect from it would be my legs. Legs that wobble like stilts I can't speak for all on the spectrum, but I do know a few who had described something seemly in feeling like a disconnect from one own body. It not something easier Google as most don't know how exactly to describe it, many had called it not having awareness of their body. Most that I know on the spectrum tend to walk in a skipping fashion or drag their feet. Many females who are on the spectrum tend not to be aware of their development bodies and will continue to dress like adulation. My cousin whose also on the spectrum is nonverbal and tend to at times not be aware of pain, not in the sense of not feeling it but a delay reaction. Autism people aren't lost in their own world but rather trapped in their own bodies without a mean to expression themselves.
Depersonalization disorder is marked by periods of feeling disconnected or detached from one's body and thoughts (depersonalization). Diagnose are objectionable to racism as well sexism and I make it a point not to accept a false or positive as an answer. The only time white men are diagnosed with anything is when one carried out a massive shooting. Our election officials think a man identifying as other is crazy, but what to say of the man who subscribes to Soldier of Fortune. There are those who feel more comfortable seeing a white man with a gun than seeing a brown woman wearing a hijab. This to them is depressing they feel it they right to stare and own. I don't like wearing shorts mainly cause as a child I had terrible eczema on my legs. Even though I'm not that child anymore I still don't like wearing shorts. People feel it they place to asked me why when it 90 degrees out I’m wearing jeans. All of me must be reveal if not then I must be hiding something. About a week ago a woman I met online asked me to show her my dick, so she could size it up and I did. I didn't want her to think I was hiding anything but whereas other guys take, they shared of dick pic. A part of me feel exposed and when she bluntly said, “oh I need more dick to satisfy me “. It didn't bother me, more so her words were read but I was not at all hurt. I’m not attached to an ideal of masculinity and don't defend it as an identity.
So yes, I’m scared and share this because it not shames that I feel or a secret hiding behind brand clothing. Identity isn’t as simple as checking a box or putting other. It’s not rejecting what is projecting but rather not letting it be the only thing that defines you. I’m not someone ideal of a characteristic portray of masculinity. If they say I carry myself queer then be that which is made I don’t have anything to prove. I’m autistic and black kinder awkward and love geeky shit. Its not a identity but who I am and at 35 it no longer bothering or do I feel the need to impress. I’m the best version of me and I the only one who have to live with me.
