Finally designing the Sonic cast. or. at least. Some of them. There are too many characters in this franchise these are just the ones I think about the most often. So uh. Ya. I will leave any notes under the cut since I have a lot, although not every character will have notes because we haven't explored every character (and share them with @shadesofvermillionvoid)

Sonic

Sonic's earring is Chip's bracelet. I don't think Sonic particularly likes having anything on his wrists, and Sonic Forces made that worse

The regulators are based directly on Sonic Prime, as I love the regulators in that show and think the idea of giving Sonic something similar to Shadow's Inhibitor Rings makes a lot of sense

He got those little markings due to accidentally absorbing some of Chaos' DNA

Tails

Tails has goggles like in Sonic Boom, because I like Boom Tails' design

He still has his robotic bits from Sonic Lost World, he still managed to keep his free will, but what happened was Zavok used his ability to control robots to force Tails to fight Sonic. Since then, Tails has updated his cybernetics so he can filter out any suspicious frequencies that could take his free will.

The cannon arm from Lost World is now basically like the guns from Mario and Rabbids, where you hold it in your hand and it like covers your arm. It's like that

Tails is a skeptic. This is the funniest bit but also thanks to Boom (the bad luck episode) it has some precedence

Knuckles

Knuckles in our lore is deeply spiritual (we are developing Mobian belief systems because we are Insane) , and the first time he saw Sonic he noticed he looked similar to the murals in Hidden Palace. So when Sonic turned out to be good, that made sense to him, as Sonic was common in a lot of prophetic murals around the island.

Knux actually thought Sonic was a god at first. Then he saw him choke on a Chili Dog.

He put beads around his spines after the events of Sonic Forces, since the war was over and he could relax for the first time in months.

Amy

Amy, like Knuckles, actually has a deep connection to her belief systems. We haven't figured out everything exactly, but she and Knuckles quickly bond over this aspect of their lives

I styled her quills differently because I kind of like giving her something that makes it obvious she is a hedgehog

Similarly, I gave her a back spine, and the hedgehog nose, since I had never realized she has the same kind of nose as Tails or Cream

Shadow

Shadow wears eye makeup. He puts it on every morning. For a while he had to have help with it (from both Rouge and Amy), but eventually figured out how to do it himself

He has yellow sclera due to the Black Arms blood. Similarly, he has a longer tail than most Mobian hedgehogs, and he cannot retract his fangs. His blood is green

He has some less favorable urges. Mostly related to the whole "Black Arms feed on living creatures" things, but they don't crop up often

He and Rouge have matching earrings

Rouge

I based her design off of Sonic Prime because I honestly prefer that design more. One because she looks like an actual spy, and two because it's based on her Sonic Heroes design. Similarly, she has Prim's hair tuft

Gave her the bat nose a lot of people do because I like the way it looks

I don't have a lot of thoughts about Rouge as of right now I am so sorry.

She and Shadow have matching earrings

Silver

Silver has a lot more scrapes and burns from his future, even though it's been fixed several times

He is displaced from time. He doesn't feel connected to his current future, especially since in our lore he is one of the few people to remember Sonic 06 (it's because in our lore, Timeline B Silver got his powers from Mephiles, in the sense that those time powers had to go SOMEWHERE after the timeline reset.)

I am going to be designing a weird messed up form for Silver (like Werehog or Doom Morph for Sonic and Shadow) based probably on Mephiles to some extent

Blaze

Like Silver, she has remnants of powers from the previous timeline. She already had fire powers in Timeline A, but she has much stronger ones now, as she still has Iblis inside of her, although the powers are no longer destructive, as they were never provoked

Her dimension is actually a result of Solaris ceasing to exist. That power still existed and had to go somewhere, so it ended up resulting in the Sol Dimension.

shadow x reader

A/N: this is just a ramble of shadow and nightmares because i like the idea of him having terrors of his past and such. there is no coherency.

he woke with a start, jerking up in his bed with the blanket kicked down to the foot of the mattress and his fur raised in different ways from his fitful tossing and turning. he didn’t need sleep as much as others did, but it didn’t mean he didn’t need it at all; he still had to sleep on occasion.

he dreamt of his life back in the ark, of maria. of how he had failed to keep her safe and witnessed her death firsthand; the life draining from her youthful eyes and her body fall limp before he was sent hurtling to earth in his chamber. of being awoken after 50 years stasis into a world he had only heard about, full of people being too loud, too greedy, too oblivious. of his burning hatred for these fleshy creatures that were the byproduct of those who rid him of the only place he had ever known as home.

he also dreamt of how he hurtled down to earth a second time, after rescuing the planet alongside the blue hedgehog he so despised. how even in his weakened state, he felt the burning of heat as he crashed through the earth’s atmosphere. of the black arms; of black doom, who of which he was made of; like eve from adam’s rib. he was just as cursed as she.

nightmares, you had called them, when he had woken one night with a cry of maria’s name and woken you as well. you knew all he had gone through, and even in his refusal of your comfort, you helped him to understand; and sat beside him as his adrenaline wore down, helped him count as he took staggered inhales and exhales. his legs swung from the side of his mattress and he made his way to the door, exiting his room to find yours.

you were still sleeping when he cracked open the door, watching for a moment as your chest rose and fell with your slow and steady breaths. his feet still moved before his mind could deny him, climbing onto the mattress carefully; he didn’t want to wake you. he knew why he had craved your comfort, why his heart and mind craved to be near you. he had come up with his own nightmare tonight.

he had lost you. his mind finally conjured up it’s own fear and you were the reason. you wormed your way into his chest and found a home beside his beating heart, cocooned in the hollow of his ribs. your touches were burned into his skin, feeling the ghost of your ministrations even long after you had gone. your laughter and voice echoed in his mind, your sweet words a broken record as he replayed them over and over to himself. as proof that he was as good as you made him out to be.

he feared losing that; of losing you. the one person after so long that he could turn to and feel safe being vulnerable with. you had never judged him. you welcomed him with open arms and comforted him even when he berated your sympathy; insulted your kindness. he didn’t understand how one could show such emotions without an ulterior motive.

he admired your sleeping form, so tempted to reach out and stroke your cheek, brush your hair from your face or to kiss at the expanse of skin before him. why could he not be more like you? when you were ever woken by a nightmare, you never hesitated to seek his comfort. albeit, his comfort was simply raising his blankets and allowing you to clamber on beside him, curling into his side and finding your own comfort by him.

he found he didn’t get nightmares those nights you slept beside him.

he instead carefully wrapped his arms around your torso, easing you to his chest; making sure your stirring was not you waking. he tucked his head into the crook of your neck and curled around you, feeling your breaths and faint heartbeat against his chest. he mimicked you, his own breaths settling into your rhythm.

 he would be gone before you woke up; he still was too prideful of himself to allow you to see him after he had sought you out in the night. that he was just as simple as every other mortal creature; who in the desperation of fear, desperately crave and seek comfort. but for now, even if he no longer fell back asleep, he would hold you tightly. assure himself you were living and breathing and his nightmare was exactly what it was - a nightmare.

he would allow the swell of selfish protectiveness in his chest fester that of course you would be fine with him around. he was the ultimate life form, of course, no one would dare cross your paths; or even think to place a singular scratch on your beloved skin. and as the sun would rise and the golden glow would stretch in the expanse of your frame, he would press a kiss to your temple and slip out of your room, to pretend as if nothing happened in the night.

he could only hope one day, his nightmares would cease; and he could search for your touch without the shame of weakness holding him back. and you would be waiting patiently for that day.

A/N. out of nowhere i thought of this and I just knew i had to write this UGH i love him your honor. i don’t even know how to smoke but for him i would 😋 anywayyyyy no beta read ! enjoyyy !!

It’s been a long day. She knew it was a bad idea taking the first aid kit outside and bandaging her arm while watching the sunset, but she needed something good today. It didn’t matter that it was getting chilly, at least she could see something beautiful before going to sleep.

“The hell are you doing?” A gruff voice broke her concentration. Turning her head, a certain black hedgehog was walking towards her.

“Just here, looking at the sunset.” She replied simply, her healthy hand wrapping instinctively the bandage around her arm as her eyes remained locked on the sunset in front of her.

A ‘tch’ left his lips, as he suddenly snatched the band from her hand, sitting beside her to resume the wrapping. The girl looked at him, wanting to say something, but decided to stay quiet as she now could see the sunset without a worry.

They sat there in silence, his eyes and hands concentrated on covering her injury. Late that day, there had been an attack by Eggman, it would’ve been easy if only Sonic was there to lessen the damages. Truth was, he wasn’t there, but Eggman didn’t know -nor believed- that. The rest of the team fought against him, but even when they tried their best, there were a lot of injuries after everything was over. Tails was left unconscious, Amy was resting her leg that got painfully twisted, even Knuckles was spent after everything.

And at last, the girl got a shard threw at her almost leaving her armless.

Shaking her head slowly, her eyes fixated on the beautiful scenario in front of her, the way the shadows started to appear when the sun went down, how the weather got colder and the birds stopped singing. She smiled at the sight.

“Done.” Shadow said, closing the aid kit, getting on his feet. The girl not following. “What? Got an injury on your leg too?”

“No,” she said. Glancing at her arm briefly, she smiled. “Thanks for the patching, though. I’ll be here for a little longer, can’t you see the pretty sunset?”

The hedgehog said nothing, as he started walking away from where she was sitting. The space he was occupying suddenly got colder. She kind of wished he would’ve stayed, but she also knew how Shadow was. Such a lone wolf.

Her thoughts were silenced when her nose caught the scent of smoke. Was something burning? Turning around to examinate the perimeter and check if the fire was somehow closer, she noticed the figure of Shadow looming over her. He was smoking.

With furrowed eyebrows, she opened her mouth to ask about that habit that she never knew he had, but then he sat beside her again, his eyes fixated on the sunset. And she decided to keep quiet too.

The breeze was soon starting to become colder; the sun quickly being swallowed between the mountains as it left a few sunrays glowing from them, announcing the arrival of the moon that was waiting still a little translucent on the sky.

Her eyes suddenly felt the need to see how Shadow looked while smoking. It was, interesting how he seemed so nonchalant about it, when he probably wasn’t used to smoking around anyone. She knew that because she couldn’t recall a single time that someone could mention such a thing.

Shadow felt her stare, and he turned his lips blowing a puff of smoke that got lost into the air. He thought maybe she wanted to ask something but she wasn’t talking. With a confused face, he raised the cigarette once again.

But there wasn’t a cigarette. At least not in between his fingers. He looked amused at his hand and then at her. The girl took the cigarette out of nowhere and raised it to her lips, and he didn’t even notice.

“I didn’t know you were a smoker.” Shadow stated with a smirk, crossing his legs, resting his elbows on his thighs. She laughed as the smoke flew to the sky.

“I didn’t know you were.” Her words as she returned the cigarette.

“Was that a party trick?”

She cocked her head to the side. “What thing?”

“Taking the cigarette out of my hand without me noticing.” He replied, looking at her, inhaling the heat from the cig.

Chuckling, she shook her head. “It’s not something I do often. It’s been some time since the last time I did that.” She didn’t really used to go to parties, and when she went to one, she wasn’t used to flirting with people, as she only pulled that movement when she was trying to flirt on someone.

The black hedgehog smiled, noticing that the cigarette had a faint stain of lipstick. Getting the cigarette close to his face, he made sure his lips touched the same spot when taking another puff.

Blowing the smoke out, he turned at her, a smirk plastered on his face. “Good to know.”

Findings from reading Gerald’s journal (spoilers!)

• The journal was supplied to Abraham via an “Archival and Requisition Department,” and was signed “-T”

• Gerald had two sons: one was interested in robotics, the other in archaeology

• Project ARK had other funding outside of the United Federation

• Experiments were being conducted on a chaos emerald on the ARK, which was simply “acquired” at some point

• There is a direct reference to Ifrit from Sonic Rivals 2

• Emerl was found “in a warehouse” by Gerald’s archeologist son.

• Emerl may very well have eradicated The Fourth Great Civilization

• Maria was diagnosed with her illness later in life and was, presumably, not born with it

• Maria was moved from Earth to the ARK with the begrudging/unsure consent of her parents

• Maria is officially referred to as being the “adoptive daughter” of everyone aboard the ARK

• Maria had to use mobility aids

• Abraham Tower was the result of an accidental pregnancy

• Gerald refers to the pursuit of immortality (as requested by the president) as being “as intangible as a shadow,” and that he can use that pursuit to “chase [the] shadow” of finding a cure for Maria’s illness

• The Chaos-inspired robots were Gerald’s first answer to GUN’s demand for weapons, though their original intention was for search and rescue

• Chaos Drives were invented as a way to infuse Chaos Emerald energy into living tissue safely, as direct contact with the Chaos Emerald proved too dangerous

• Lizards (salamanders) were chosen as the first test subjects of the newly invented Chaos Drives for their regenerative properties and “manageable size.”

• Early Chaos Drives were also given to GUN’s mechs to power them

• Gerald felt incredibly guilty about the biolizard, and tried to keep it as comfortable as possible knowing that it was in tremendous pain

• Gerald may or may not have lied to Maria about what happened to the salamander

• Gerald was fiercely protective of Maria and had no tolerance for anyone who doubted the validity of her illness

• Gerald equates his agreement with Doom as being a deal with the devil

• Somehow, the development of a “small, sturdy biped” (hedgehog) was born out of necessity, and not to imitate other bipedal hedgehogs

• “Project Shadow” was named by Gerald with “scorn and mockery,” but it took Maria to help him realize that “A shadow tells you which way to go to find the light.”

• Gerald wanted Shadow to be “A champion of life and hope”

• “Gizoid” means “everything”

• The Gizoid (Emerl) establishes an unbreakable, protective link with whoever can exhibit the most power

• Gerald established a “link” with Emerl by firing multiple model guns in front of him

• The stress Gerald was under is reflected in his journal entries becoming more rushed and erratic

• Emerl was handed over to the government when they threatened to shut down Project Shadow

• Gerald created the Eclipse Cannon in response to Emerl not being “flashy” enough, and deliberately made it so that it would be impossible to use on a single enemy without destroying the world

• The Eclipse Cannon was meant for Shadow to deal with the Black Arms; as in, “This is Shadow’s cannon. My gift to him in a battle he never asked for.

I’m so sorry.”

• Maria helped design Shadow’s accessories to help ease the strain of the chaos power in him (specifically his shoes and rings)

• Gerald’s sons started to drift apart, divided in their relationship with their father

• Shadow and Maria’s relationship rekindled some hope in Gerald and what he was working towards

• Maria’s parents had another daughter, and Gerald felt it was a sort of “replacement” for her. No indicator to how Maria may have felt

• Emerl rampaged the ARK after having a new link established and learning enough to become “A god of wrath,” as described in ancient stone tablets

• Emerl’s rampage turned the Artificial Chaos to behave erratically and dangerously

• Both Shadow and Emerl are “equipped with heart”

• Gerald became so distraught from Maria’s death that he completely lost all sense of self

• Gerald left “everything” to Shadow

• In the last paragraph, Gerald seems to refer to Shadow using “it” and “he” interchangeably, but it’s a bit unclear if he’s referring to Shadow exclusively

• The journal has an Eggman sticker on the back, marking it as “Property of the Eggman Empire”

idw “after all, if he can’t be forgiven, can you?” that was soooo fucked up of sonic dude. i always think abt that. that whole scene where sonic lures shadow away and emotionally manipulates him to stop him from trying to kill mr tinker was so fucked of sonic. i kinda loved it. manipulate is a strong word but i do think it applies to what he was doing there. he was scrambling to find an angle that’d disarm shadow and the way HE SMIRKED WHEN HE FOUND ITTTTT.

like he was fully taking advantage of shadow’s genuine remorse and trauma there. the arguments he makes suck under examination but they’re uniquely effective on one shadow the hedgehog.

“eggman has helped in certain scenarios, like the ark incident (that he also mostly caused)” bad argument and he knows it, specifically mentioning the ark

-> “eggman fought with us and was crucial in defending the planet in the black arms incident” extremely generous reading of eggman’s actions there, he was mainly just after the chaos emeralds like usual and really only defending himself and his interests, again bringing up shadow’s past and origins

-> “if he [a megalomaniac who has very intentionally tried to kill me and ravage the world so he can rule it many many multiple times despite having literally every other choice available, now amnesiac] can’t be forgiven [for trying to end me and the world for funsies], can you [be forgiven for trying to kill me and end the world in a haze of grief induced from having your memories altered and just (because you just woke up from a 50 year nap) having witnessed your best/only friend and sister killed in front of your eyes (which you are the cause of, for existing)]?” such a false equivalency, but one that shadow is predisposed to believe in cause he’s just had his past dredged up in his head again a few lines ago, and feels wayyy guiltier about his whole deal than he actually is for the part he played and the circumstances he was in. sonic’s using his own insecurity against himmmmmmmm.

suuuuuuch a dick move. tbf i don’t interpret sonic as having intentionally or cruelly been thinking all that, i just think the only thing on his mind was winning. like when shadow realized sonic was luring him away, sonic was just like “uh yeah? cause i needed you to not kill that guy and you can’t kill him when you’re not there”

man i just really like that for him. (not completely intentional) manipulatory tendencies. cause if you can say words that make you win, say them, and say them quick. fuck man. like i’m not 100% in on this interpretation but like it’s really fucking interesting isn’t it?

Do you mean fanfiction?? I'll admit I haven't really been reading Sonic fics outside of friends' stories, friends' recs and for participation in random events since 2022 or so. But I think I can!

🪴 Beyond a Promise by @moralitas (Teen, No Warnings Apply, 48 804 words, 10/10 chapters) — Slow Burn, PTSD/Trauma, Slice of Life

Shadow the Hedgehog has decidedly left the past behind, but his guilt still haunts him and intrudes on his life. This is how he comes to realize that living in itself, is much more than just survival and following old promises. Life has much more to throw at him that weird monsters and life threatening scenarios- there's also a pesky blue annoyance.

Still one of the most memorable endings to a story, that makes me randomly remember about it in the middle of doing everyday tasks and think about angsty what-ifs... Extra points for Shadow & G.U.N. interactions, I'm an enjoyer of occupational novels, and there's a bit of it there; many details of Sonic & Shadow interactions I loved, too. But most of all, amazing Shadow's characterisation and development arc 🙏

A swirl of white marks his ankle: Sonic has never given it much thought, except when Tails brings it up. If he meets this soulmate, he'll welcome them with open arms. If he doesn't? Well, it's too bad, but Sonic can live with that. ---- Shadow never wants to meet his soulmate. They will only ever be disappointed by him and the fact that he's only a monster in mobian skin.

Soulmate AUs are a rarity for this ship, and I love Soulmate AUs 💜 This one dives into the hedgehogs' in-AU backstories as well which is always interesting to read about!

Maybe this will teach Sonic something about the respect that Shadow commanded. "A kiss," Shadow repeats, eyes narrowing as crimson bores into grass green. "...Why?"

Sonic kisses Shadow out of nowhere... And if this is what could happen in canon, this is how it would happen. This is how they would react. With a slightly bittersweet aftertaste 🥺

Wounded pride and Shadow not being able to keep up with his own expectations – stars, this fic resonated with me so much 😭 Sonic is being a perfect supportive partner in there, coming up with so many great pet names!

Maybe he's not meant to touch. It's the newest excuse he thought of in hopes that he could prolong the game a little more; a careful ruse to enjoy the bittersweet torture of seeing the days pass them by, while he pretends he doesn't seek azure blue whenever he's restless. At first, all he wanted to do was watch: but now the desire to touch, to have, to affect is at a point where he's not sure whether reaching for Sonic would truly be fruitless. He wonders that especially when Sonic's eyes light up upon seeing him. When he corners Shadow, when he invades his space and he touches and takes and then excuses it by calling it a fight. Shadow truly wonders then: if only he was brave enough to reach out, what would his grip find? Loose stars or a battle-worn body? Standing up, he glances at Sonic again, whose eyes have now met his own. There's something heavy in the eye contact, something Shadow doesn't dare name. Neither of them say anything, and yet Sonic's eyes move away from him again, like they did. Shadow warps away, hiding from the stars once more.

M-rated for sexual tension and general horniness! So much UST, guys... Sonic and Shadow's dynamics is so special here, with both of them being aro as well. There's so much queer intimacy that I just can't explain the vibe of, just that it's special. The plot is so suspenseful and full of intrigue – I was running to read every update when this story was ongoing. It all starts with Shadow losing his body to some entity, and no one knows that it happened...

He was strict, and punishing, and most of the students tended to have opinions on him ranging from neutral to downright terrible. If you were quiet and got your work done, he was okay. If you were anything else, the man could probably put you in an early grave with the force of the glares he'd give sometimes. All in all, Mr. Robotnik and Mr. Maurice were about as opposite as you could get. Where Mr. Robotnik was all grumpy faces and eternal anger, Mr. Maurice was bright and energetic - rarely seen without a smile on his face, and always in a good mood. Which is why it was so odd that not only did Mr. Maurice willingly choose to spend his free time sitting in with Mr. Robotnik, but that there seemed to be an ungodly amount of capital T /Tension/ between the two.

This is just absolutely ✨perfect✨👌 Like, "written for me" perfect. Relatable, same headcanons, my fav tropes, etc. In the story Sonic and Shadow work as high school teachers in the future, and their students feel this tension between them… OC-centric!

A lot of things go very wrong, so be prepared for it to be heavy, but the Sonadow is really up my alley here, and there's Knuxamy, too... and an awesome characterisation+lore for Gadget with past Infidget... so many characters and all of them are written so well. Guys, this fic is iconic.
