A short story. Metallica (Mid 1985) were just hanging around. Each member had a beer in their hand.
Lars: (Takes a sip from his beer) So, um guys, what should we do today? James: (Takes a sip from his beer) How about we go check out that new skate park? Lars: Um, James we've been there 10 times this month. James: (Sighs) You're right. You have any idea on what we can o today, Cliff buddy? Cliff: How about we check out that new pancake house? Lars: Um, Cliff we've been to that pancake house 15 times already. Cliff: (Sighs) Yeah, but we haven't been there for the sixteenth time. How about we make a 16th trip there? Lars: I'm sick of pancakes. Kirk: (Sees two very beautiful girls) Dudes, (Points in the girls direction) how about we go talk to those cute girls over there. James: Good idea, Kirk! Cliff: Oh yeah! Lars: Um, that's a great idea. Kirk.
Little did the guys know that the two girls are Kim Hammett (Fem!Kirk) and Lara Ulrich (Fem!Lars). Both are holding glasses of wine in their hand.
Lara: Um, what do you want to do today? Kim: (Points in the boys direction) Boys are approaching us, Lara! Lara: How nice (Rolls her eyes).
The boys approach the two lovely ladies.
Lars: Hello ladies-
Lars notices that Fem!Kirk looks like Kirk, but with b00bs. Everyone else notices that Lara looks like Lars, but with longer hair and b00bs, plus she has hips.
Cliff: (Whispers to Lars) Woah, she looks just like you, but with tits and longer hair. Lars: Hello ladies. Um, what nice weather we're having, huh? Lara: Um, yes. It's going to be sunny all day and dry. James: (Mumbles while staring at Kim) Oh, it won't. I'm going to make you wet. Kim: Huh, what'd you say? James: Uh, nothing. It'll rain today. I saw the forecast.
James chugs his beer nervously.
Kim: You cuties haven't introduced yourselves yet. Lars: We're very sorry for that. I don't know if you have heard of us.
Lara and Kim stare at Lars blankly.
Cliff: We're a thrash metal band called Metallica. Lars: (points to himself in pride) I came up with the name. Lara: Um, that's cool. I'm Lara Ulrich, the drummer for Metallicunt. I came up with the name by the way. I like tennis, skying, scuba diving, film and art. I hope to have kids one day. Kim: I'm Kim Hammett, the guitarists to Metallicunt. I like horror movies, skateboarding, surfing, manga, anime, and comic books. I also own a cat. Lara: She's heterosexual. Kim: That's bullshit! I'm bi, and you're my Bi lover (kisses Lara on the lips)
The bands eyes widen.
Cliff: (Whispers to Lars again) See, I told you. Lars: (Nods) Cliff: Nice to meet you two. Anyways, I'm Cliff, the bassist of the band. That's Lars, our drummer- Lars: I can introduce myself, thank you pal (pats Cliff on the shoulder). Cliff: Anyways, I love pancakes, beer, classical music, jazz, and animals. Lara: Um, that's ni- Cliff: I also have a big drumstick (winks at both Kim and Lara). Kim: Wait, I thought you were the bassist? Lara: I'm not surprised. They say bassists can do it better. James: I'm James Hetfield, lead singer, guitarist, and lyricist. I like skateboarding, snowboarding, football, and hunting. And I fuck like a beast too (winks at Kim). Kim: Oh my. Did you hear that, Lara? Lara: (Crosses her arms and bites her lips) Yeah. Kim: And what's your name, cutie patootie? Kirk: (Blushes) I'm Kirk Hammett, the guitarist. I also like comic books, anime, manga, horror movies, and skateboarding. Lars: He's basically the awesome weird little brother of the group. His riffs are hot, but his jokes suck. Kirk: My jokes don't suck. Lara: You're adorable. Kirk: I go down girls all the time. They call me the genital torturer.
Lara and Kim start to giggle. Lara and Kim are now each side of Kirk holding his arms. He is still holding a beer in one hand.
Lara: I think you won. Boyfriend material right here. Kim: A man that goes down on a girl is the hottest thing.
Kirk and the two girls walk away.
Kirk: Bye, guys.
James, Lars, and Cliff just stood there as Kirk walks away with two lovely girls.
Lars: Um, so what do you guys ant to do now?

🍊 Who’s a character you don’t write for that often, but keep meaning to write for more?
🍍 What kind of AUs do you like? Are there any AUs you hate or just generally have beef with?
I'll answer for Soul Eater since you're a SE pal. ^^
🍊 Who’s a character you don’t write for that often, but keep meaning to write for more?
Considering I only write for Spirit and Stein.... 😅 I have ideas for all of the characters, actually. I suppose though...hmm... I need to take a genuine stab at Marie. I keep putting her off in my brain. Also Lord Death; I have a huge series of stories outlined where he's the main character and I've written exactly....zero. And also Sid and Naigus, and Azusa. There's a lot of dynamics I'd like to explore there. I know that isn't one character... 😅 But the thing in SE is that it's all about those relationships. So you can't really have just one. And yes oh yes, someday I will also write about Excalibur.
🍍 What kind of AUs do you like? Are there any AUs you hate or just generally have beef with?
Soooooooooooo....... Here's the thing..... Even tho I just posted an 8K AU the other day.... AU's are very much not my thing.💀 (My gosh that fic was so hard to write, for this reason.) I like canon fic, canon compliant fic... Prequels, sequels, missing parts of canon... New tales within... As long as it all fits. I even have trouble with things that are a stretch of canon, you know? I simply...have a preference. I want more of what I fell in love with, not someone's re-imagining. That said... I can get into AU's if they strike the right chord. A lovely one on AO3 right now for example is called "Are You Dead Or Are You Sleeping?" and I've also outlined a figure skating/ice hockey AU story based on the this and this stunning artwork! I once wrote an AU that turned the two humans into a vampire and a dryad and put them in a fantasy setting. WAY out of my comfort zone! I've also written AU death fics cuz, angst. I guess.... For me, there has to be something specific worth exploring in an AU that strikes my particular interest. Death fics hit a very particular set of emotions in a way only death fics can, for example. There's no formula to determining what I'm gonna like or dislike, I'm afraid. Basically just, the AU would either have to have a desperately clever plot, or hit the emotions in just the right way to appeal to me. I, uh.... I'm not really one for fix-it fics or canon rewrites. (A certain person is reading this right now and is possibly/probably in shock...) If I'm in a fandom you can be assured I love its canon. Doesn't mean I can't view a thing critically. But yeah, the whole fix-it/rewrite is one thing I pretty much never go in for... (Don't worry certain person I am still invested in and will love yours!) There are definitely AU things I like less... Usually just... The general...putting characters in another setting, thing. Like if I were to put all of Soul Eater into Star Trek, as an example. Uh... Changing the race/gender of all the characters doesn't appeal to me. But really, it's hard to answer what kind of AU's I dislike since I shy away from AU so strongly. Most/all AU? I'm really a canon-only type of person. All that said.... I am still very willing and have read things outside my preferences, either if desperate for The Fictional Character™️ or if a friend has asked. And I have found enjoyment in some AU's!

bc im bored and bc i wanna see ppl rant about their ocs
i order you to rant abt ur rottmnt oc, gimme every single detail, just let it all out and have fun
OMG I've been waiting for an ask like this!!! LOL I HAVE IT ALL WRITTEN DOWN AND EVERYTHING 💀😭🙏 TYSM ^^
Tamsin is 15 years old all through season 1, 16 in season two, and 17 in the movie! While most moments with her via future, she ranges from 21-42.
Tamsin is super laid back and kinda has that Surfer dude attitude some of the older iterations of the guys had, but she's also super outgoing and ready for anything, wether it be a dance party, or a girls day out with April going mall shopping... Or fighting a bunch of Foot Clan soldiers and going on a car chase after Warren and Hypno.
Unlike her poor gal-pal, April, Tamsin has a job! While it's not the greatest, little pay, and maybe a bit rat infested, she's glad she has it. She works at a 60s themes burger joint, you know the kind with roller-skating waiters and waitresses? Yep, that's Tams. Speaking of which, she is very skilled in skating! It's one of the things she uses when keeping up with Badguys or the Turtles.
While Tamsin seems super chill, she does have this... Competitive side...
You see, she's a people pleaser - always has been since it's what she seeks from her mother and father desperately.
Her whole life she'd spend trying to seek the approval and attention of her parents, whether it be learning the piano or joint the swim team- Tamsins grown up involved in MANY things - specifically sports.
Tamsin plays baseball, basketball, tennis, softball, she's still on the swim team, and she does track, karate, and hockey.
Is she good at all of these... Depends. Does she have that scary competitive spirit that somehow makes her survive through all of these?- defitnely yes.
There is one thing that Tamsin finds herself quite good at and definitely has her eyes set out on achieving moreover in life, and that's boxing/the wrestling team.
Tamsin is a grade A rough houser who likes the thrill and easy blowing off steam exercise that is these two sports give her- and she's pretty good at it with her brute force and just ready to throw hands whenever wherever.
So yeah, you can either have a Sweet hearted, completely chilled out Tamsin. Or you can decide to invite her to some late night basketball and get a basketball to the head at least twelve times - whether on accident or on purpose. (Sorry Raph-)
Tamsin's Role In TMNT
Her role in every iteration is the one behind the camera for our one and only April O'Neil. She's her right hand in all the reports and stories April can get her hands on.
I was kinda sad we didn't get to see (or rarely saw if you consider the movie) was Rise April and her classic News Reporter role we mostly got through the iterations, but they also made her a teen still in highschool. And it got my thinking... What's something that can keep people updated or have a good gossip, but anyone of any age can do?
A podcast/YouTube videos!
And who better to help the girl out than Tamsin as the video recorder and editor!
While thinking about this too, I also noticed that in highschool, April wasn't exactly 'popular' but she wasn't like- a person people hated or shitted on, she was just kinda there, maybe a bit invisible.
So I feel the same would be for Tamsin, which is why they stick together most of the time, so their channel only had up to 2 subscribers (note, one of those subs is Tam herself)
How she met the guys
So how I feel a Rise episode would play out is Tamsin and April just finished up a little video, April being just a bit down about it, knowing they won't get as much attention on it as she likes. Tamsin tries cheering her up with an idea to go out for a bite and maybe some karaoke or something else fun.
April overall agrees, letting the two set off on a late night adventure.
One thing April kinda forgot was that she's, you know, quite a target for some of the sudden odd dangers of New York given the group of certain friends she hands out with, and it ends up with her, and a very afraid/confused Tamsin getting caught by the Foot Clan.
Of course, after some silly goofy ahh banter, four shadowy figures come to save them. April knows who it is obviously and is very relieved... Tamsin, however...
These are four tall, big, green monsters that just took down an entire freaking army of weird ass cultists, and from where she's looking, attacking her friend (group hug)
So against better judgment, a good five minutes are spent of April trying to pry a metal pipe out of Tamsins' hands as she tries to attack Leo.
A moment it's taken to explain and introduce everyone, and Tamsin is slightly put to ease, willing to give these four supposed turtles benefit of the doubt.
And hopefully to the end of the episode, April is talking to Donnie, he's explaining how he found quite inconvenient that she and her little friend were in peril just as he was in the middle kf watching their latest YouTube video.

1. are you named after anyone? yes, sort of. some of my great-something grandmothers had my names, but it was more that my mom liked them a lot and wanted to name me my name since she was a teenager. we later found out that one of my great-something grandmothers was named sarah mariah (which is my name and my sister’s name).
2. when was the last time you cried? i teared up earlier today when i was reading a post about dads being great and loving their kids.
3. do you have kids? no. i’ve had a lot of childcare jobs, including being a nanny for four years, and i’m still super close to those kids and see them all the time. sometimes their mom wishes me a happy mother’s day, so...
4. do you use sarcasm a lot? never. you think someone would really do that? go on the internet and be sarcastic?
5. what’s the first thing you notice about people? i straight up do not know... i feel like i’m taking in a lot of info when i meet someone new, so maybe it’s just whatever stands out the most about them?
6. what’s your eye color? brown
7. scary movies or happy endings? happy endings. i’m a little bitch and i don’t watch scary movies.
8. any special talents? running into large, solid objects that have been consistently been in the same place for months, years, or even decades of my life.
9. where were you born? maine, born and raised bb
10. what are your hobbies? i like to read a lot, dabble in 45 different crafts/arts, watch educational videos on youtube, partake in semi-dangerous sports, and play pretend with my friends
11. have you any pets? no. i live in a real small apartment that is uncomfortably messy and i would feel too guilty to bring an animal into that. i really love cats though, and want a cat that is legitimately bonded to me, which i’ve never really had. we weren’t at my dad’s house enough for his cats to really get comfy with us, and my mom has always been hella allergic.
12. what sport do you play/have played? i played soccer and basketball as a kid. my dad said i was actually good at soccer when i was little, which i always thought was not true (not afraid of the ball, good coordination, good soccer vision, his words) but i quit both of those when i was in upper elementary because i was focused on gymnastics. i started gymnastics when i was five and did it regularly, up to 5 nights a week, until i was 14. i took up figure skating about a decade ago, but i’ve been on an extended break because of pandemic anxiety. i skateboard occasionally, but i am not good at it.
13. how tall are you? 5'3″ on a good day, lol. can’t believe the doctor told me i was gonna be 6′2″.
14. favorite subject in school? english or art/theatre (in high school). i liked school in general, but i struggled a little bit with science and math in high school: science because i had never learned how to study and was finally being challenged for the first time in my life and math because i accidentally pattern reconditioned myself into a higher placement test score than i ought to have had, putting me in a class where i didn’t have the foundational knowledge needed to succeed. both problems were fixed by the time i was a junior, but the damage had been done to my psyche and i thought i was bad at those topics for a while. english though, loml.
15. dream job? lol my current job (children’s librarian) if it was just the actual job and not the societal bandaid that it’s become... though i would love a four day work week. that would make it perfect.

Day 18: Appendicitis
Using @medwhumpmay to FINALLY finish the full length Ryo appendicitis fic I’ve been trying to finish for months! I do hope it ended up enjoyable, and I hope you like it anon! Also my fill for my @badthingshappenbingo space “Vomiting.” Btw Ryo’s name is Japanese and pronounced “Ree-oh”, so when Alex calls him “Ry” it sounds like “Ree.” They’re 16/17 here. TW: vomit. 5,268 words.
Ryo was so excited that he could hardly contain himself. His dad had a business trip this week and his mom had suddenly been summoned to Japan for a distant cousin’s funeral. He was sixteen and definitely could have stayed home alone for a few days, but he also couldn't drive yet so his mom had asked Shu if Ryo could spend the weekend. Shu had said yes, and also promised to bring Ryo to his figure skating competition on Saturday. That meant two things. One, Ryo got his best friend Alex all to himself for the week, and two, Alex would see him ice skating which he usually hated doing because it was "boring and gay."
Contrary to Alex’s opinion, Ryo loved figure skating. It was inferior only to his love of his parents, his best friend, and animals. Ryo liked a lot of things though. He liked video games, movies, talking to people, and even school although school work was not his strong suit. He was known to be perpetually smiley and so energetic that he had trouble sitting still in classes. He was also known to always have his mostly silent and brooding best friend, Alex, trailing behind him. Alex had transferred to their school in sixth grade when he came to live with his new foster dad, Shu. They had become immediate friends. Well, Ryo at least had immediately taken a liking to Alex, because he was someone who looked like they needed a friend.
The day Ryo had first approached Alex in the hall went something like this:
“Hiya Alex! I’m Ryo. Me and my friends are going to the pizza place after school, and I was thinking-”
“Don’t,” Alex interrupted.
“Don’t what?” Ryo asked in confusion.
“Don’t think,” Alex said, his expression stony. “About me, or at all.”
“But if I don’t think I’ll die,” Ryo said.
“So die then!” Alex shouted at him. He stomped away angrily. ‘Definitely in need of a friend,’ Ryo thought after him.
Unfortunately for Alex, a teacher had been listening to this interaction and dragged the two of them to the principal’s office. Alex was going to get in trouble, but Ryo knew if that happened they’d never become pals and insisted that it was his fault: that he’d been annoying Alex and they were actually buddies! Alex was let off with a warning and now they had to be “friends”. Eventually they became actual friends, Alex taking to Ryo faster than he took to Shu. He followed Ryo around like a shadow, sometimes a vengeful one whenever anybody felt like picking on Ryo for his white hair or ditzy personality. He was fiercely protective and had a short temper, often getting into fights that resulted in both boys being suspended. He and Ryo were such opposites that nobody really understood their friendship except for them, but they were fine to keep it that way as long as they were together.
The thing was, that was when they were twelve. Now they were sixteen and seventeen and Ryo was acutely aware that he didn’t like Alex just as a friend anymore. But Alex had been through an incredible amount of hardship, he was touchy and showed no interest in anything romantic, so Ryo convinced himself that he could handle remaining friends forever. He wanted Alex to be happy and he thought that confessing his love and potentially ruining their friendship would surely do the opposite. Therefore, he kept it to himself and thought that maybe someday things would change, but right now he couldn’t risk hurting Alex like that.
Still, their friendship sometimes blurred the lines between just friends and more. They both knew it, even though they didn’t talk about it. Their gaze would linger a bit too long, or they’d find themselves too physically close without trying. Then Alex would cut the contact off with an awkward blush and that was that. Ryo tried not to let it sting too much.
This weekend though, Ryo was excited because he’d have Alex’s attention all to himself. They spent most weekends together anyways, but it was different staying over three nights in a row. Ryo’s mom dropped him off with a large duffel bag at 5 AM on Friday morning on her way to the airport and thanked Shu profusely before driving off. Ryo grinned and went straight to Alex’s room, where the spare mattress he’d been sleeping on for years now had already been laid out on the floor for him. Alex was still asleep and Ryo didn’t wake him up, but he himself was too ramped up to sleep. He waited until Alex’s alarm went off for school and used it as an excuse to jump on top of his best friend with a happy shout.
Alex yelped awake in shock, scowling when he found Ryo sitting on his stomach. “Dude, get off me!” He groaned. Ryo giggled and flopped onto his side next to Alex, beaming.
“I couldn't help it, I was so bored waiting for you to wake up,” Ryo complained. Alex grumbled and sat up, rubbing his eyes. He looked down at Ryo’s long messy hair and shook his head. “What?” Ryo asked innocently.
“You're a freaking menace,” Alex said, but there was no bite to it. Ryo got dressed while Alex showered and then they sat at the breakfast table where Shu had cereal and blueberry muffins sitting out. The high school was only two blocks away from Shu’s house so they'd walk together afterwards. Alex was not a morning person and not one to make small talk regardless of the time of day, but Ryo filled their commute with chatter about his figure skating competition tomorrow. If it was anyone else, Alex long ago would've told Ryo to shut up, but he seemed content to half listen as they walked.
Once the pair arrived they split ways, having separate first periods. Ryo sat in the back of all of his classes because otherwise he distracted the other students with his fidgeting. Today though he felt a bit tired and was relatively calm, although that didn’t help him pay attention any better. He figured it was from waking up so early and then being so excitable this morning. There was something else though, too. Something in his stomach that felt just a bit... off. By second period this vague discomfort had become a dull pain, but he dismissed it. It was probably nothing significant.
All morning, Ryo tried to ignore the uncomfortable sensation in his stomach with a high level of success, but after lunch it felt way worse. His lunch period was separate from Alex's but his other friends asked him if he was okay when he just pushed his food around, contrary to his typically voracious teenage appetite. Ryo made up an excuse that he'd had a big breakfast and shoved a few more bites down before he was able to escape, saying he needed to finish his homework for next period. This was true, but mostly he wanted to hide by himself where no one could fuss as he groaned in pain over his stomach. He went to the bathroom and pulled up his shirt. His abdomen looked bloated and he assumed he'd eaten something bad. Bad timing, the day before a competition, but he'd performed with the flu before and still won first place. He shook it off with a few full-body jitters and then went to class, which he spent most of hunched over, clutching his middle. By last period - history with Alex - Ryo was sweating in pain and was anxious to leave. He just wanted to curl into a tiny ball on bed. But he also didn’t want Alex or Shu to know about it, lest they keep him home tomorrow, so he tried to appear as normal as possible during class.
One nice thing about Alex was that he rarely asked questions. So even though Ryo was quieter than usual during their shared history period, he didn’t say anything. He also didn’t comment when Ryo seemed to lag on their short walk home to Shu’s house and didn’t care what game Alex chose for them to play on Xbox (usually he wanted to play something like Mario Kart while Alex fought for Call of Duty). Ryo was hoping that Alex didn’t suspect a thing, but by dinnertime Ryo wasn't so sure he was doing as well as he thought he was at acting fine. He felt overheated and poked at his dinner, his stomach burning far worse than it had all day in school. Alex kept looking at him with a strange expression, but said nothing.
Shu, on the other hand, never missed an opportunity to be nosy. "What's wrong Ryo?" Shu asked. “You’ve barely touched your plate. Do you not like meatloaf anymore?”
"No, it’s great. I'm just kinda nervous for tomorrow," Ryo came up with the excuse quickly. Then, taking this as his opportunity to ditch the table, added, “I think I'm gonna head to bed early, is that okay?"
Shu nodded, seemingly suspecting nothing. "I'll save your plate in the fridge if you get hungry later," he said. Alex didn't look so convinced, probably because he knew Ryo better and how if he was skipping a meal, there was definitely something wrong.
"Thanks," Ryo muttered, avoiding Alex's gaze as he hurried to Alex's bedroom - away from the smell of food that had been making his stomach do flips for the entire meal. He closed the bedroom door and sat heavily on his mattress on the floor, crouched over with his arms clutching his stomach and trying to breath in and out slowly through his nose. The nausea was getting really intense now and he was contemplating the best way to throw up without anyone noticing when Alex entered.
His best friend sat next to him, peering at him in confusion. "What's wrong with you?" He asked gruffly. To anybody else he would’ve sounded harsh and accusatory, but Ryo knew Alex well enough that he understood the tone was actually worry.
"Nothin', just nervous," Ryo repeated the same excuse he'd given Shu.
Alex, however, knew him just as well and snorted. "You don't get nervous until right before you get on the ice," Alex said.
Ryo whined and pouted. "Fine, my stomach hurts. Didn't want Shu to know or he’ll tell me I can’t go tomorrow, that's all. Happy?"
"Thrilled," Alex said sarcastically. He put a careful hand on Ryo’s back, his tone softening. "I won't tell him, Ry. Do you want Tums or something though?"
Ryo contemplated the offer and decided if it might help, he'd take it. "Sure," he said finally. Another sharp pang stabbed at his abdomen and he winced, pulling his arms even tighter around himself. "Owwww, Alex."
Alex shook his head and got him the Tums. Ryo chewed on two of them, the chalky taste doing nothing to quell his nausea. He broke into a cold sweat and shivered, leaning his head on Alex's shoulder. Alex frowned and put one hand on Ryo's forehead. "You feel kinda hot," he said.
"Thanks," Ryo grunted.
"Not like that, dipshit," Alex scowled. "Like you have a fever or something. You sure you don't want me to get Shu?"
Ryo knew Alex was getting worried, and he also knew when Alex got worried his first default was to go find his dad to fix it. It was mostly sweet, but sometimes Shu could overreact. Ryo shook his head no. "Please don't tell him. I've been practicing for this competition all season. It's just a little tummy ache and I'm a big boy, so chill out."
"If you say so," Alex said slowly. Ryo knew if he was too much of a baby he was still in danger of Alex narcing on him, so he sat up a little straighter even though it was painful and tried to give Alex his best confident smile.
"I think the Tums are already helping," Ryo said with false confidence. He hoped Alex believed him. He nearly convinced himself as they did their homework at Alex’s desk until the lights were out and Ryo was left with nothing but darkness.
All night, Ryo couldn’t sleep. He tried to keep his whimpering to a minimum, biting his lip until it bled, but the pain in his stomach kept getting sharper. It had now clearly moved to his right side and Ryo curled in on it like the pressure would help. It didn’t. By this point he could tell he was definitely feverish, because he was shivering despite the temperature being perfectly normal in the house - he checked the thermostat when he went to the bathroom. It was the first of many trips that night, because soon the nausea caused him to kneel in front of the toilet and throw up what little he had eaten throughout the day.
Alex was asleep by then, so Ryo tried to be as quiet as possible as his stomach contents rebelled against him. He winced as it made several splashing noises, but he didn’t hear anyone else get up so he was pretty sure he was safe. He flushed and wiped the toilet seat off, then washed his face and brushed his teeth again. Hopefully it was a one time thing, he thought to himself. Better to get it over with anyways if it was.
Ryo stumbled back to Alex’s bedroom, where Alex was still sound asleep. He got under his covers and shivered, still feeling strangely cold. His stomach was cramping uncomfortably and Ryo curled into a ball, biting back the urge to moan in pain. He was hoping that vomiting would have gotten rid of the dizzy feeling, but it hadn’t. About half an hour later the pain became too much and Ryo went back to the bathroom, gagging up a few mouthfuls of stomach acid that he spit into the toilet. He dug through the medicine cabinet, finding a bottle of ibuprofen and popping two of them in the hopes that it would help. It did a little bit, and finally he was able to fall into an uneasy sleep for a few hours before the alarm went off.
It was only six in the morning, but Ryo’s competition was a solid forty minute drive away and he had to be on the ice for warm up by eight-thirty. Usually on competition days he couldn’t wait to get moving, but Ryo immediately realized upon awakening that whatever he had been dealing with last night was still happening now. He sat up and took a sharp breath in as there was a piercing pain in the right side of his abdomen. The nausea was back in full force, and he was covered in a cold sweat.
“Alex,” Ryo grunted. “Get up.” Then he escaped to the bathroom where he took a shower, hoping it’d ease the pain somewhat. It didn’t. It was hard to stand up straight as he washed himself and at one point he sat on the floor, gagging up a large mouthful of stomach acid that quickly swirled into the drain. He took three more ibuprofen and two more Tums once he got out, then returned to the bedroom dressed and ready to go. Alex was still in bed. “Alex,” Ryo whined in annoyance, “I gotta go. Come on.” He threw his pillow at Alex’s head.
Alex threw it back, annoyed. “It’s way too early for the weekend,” he complained. But he finally started moving and Ryo went to the kitchen where Shu had already made breakfast for them.
“Morning, Ryo,” Shu said cheerfully. “You ready to get moving? You’re gonna do great.”
“Sure,” Ryo muttered with little of his usual enthusiasm, but thankfully Shu seemed not to notice. He pushed around the scrambled eggs and toast on his plate, the idea of eating making him want to puke again. He definitely wasn’t going to risk putting anything else in his stomach before the competition. Shu made avoiding food easy when he went to shower after Alex came out.
Alex sat across from Ryo, clearly still sleepy and a little grumpy as he ate his own food. Usually Ryo would tease him relentlessly for not being a morning person, but not today. Today he was just trying to focus on not shaking too obviously.
“Ry? Your face looks weird,” Alex said, snapping him out of his haze. “Are you okay?”
“Fine,” Ryo grunted. “Nervous.”
Alex stared at him judgmentally. “Already?”
“Yeah,” Ryo said, his tone uncharacteristically clipped as he bit back the truth. “I told you, it’s a really big competition.”
Alex dropped it, but Ryo could feel him staring at him until he got up to do the breakfast dishes. It was painful to stand up straight and his arms shook with the effort, but it was better than letting Alex continue to stare judgmentally. Shu came out ready to go and off they went. The drive felt impossibly long and Ryo couldn’t help but shiver in the car, pulling his legs up to his chest to hug for some minimal addition of warmth. Alex kept staring, but he kept his mouth shut. Ryo wasn’t sure he was going to make it to the venue without puking, but somehow he did, probably because there was nothing left to puke up at this point.
“Good luck,” Shu told him. Alex nodded next to him, and finally Ryo was able to escape their watchful eyes. He found his coach, stretched what little he could without it making him cry, and then got on the ice to warm up. He ended up just going in circles but not practicing any of his jumps ahead of time - he was sure he’d wear himself out if he did. He barely had the strength to keep himself upright to be honest, but the cold of the rink seemed to numb him a little bit and by some massive stroke of luck, he was up pretty early in the competition.
Positioning himself on the ice, Ryo breathed through his nose and told himself his piece was three minutes long. Three long, undoubtedly painful minutes, but then it was over. He could collapse into Alex’s arms and whine as much as he wanted the second he finished. For just three minutes, he forced himself to ignore his throbbing abdomen and performed to win, as he always did.
The performance was a blur. He tried his hardest and managed to land all of his first jumps. The adrenaline and music seemed to take over him and it wasn’t until his last jump that he fell, spinning out and slamming hard into the wall. It was nothing. Twenty more seconds. Ryo got up and continued performing, but his concentration was broken. Thank god there were no more jumps, because every movement felt like someone was twisting a knife deeper into his side. The music swelled and ended. He couldn’t breathe. He held his ending pose for no more than three seconds before he knew he had to get off right now.
He skated off the ice, barely making it to the bench where he nearly collapsed, his coach catching him. “Shit, you’re burning up,” his coach said as soon as he felt Ryo’s hot skin. “You did a good job though.”
“I gotta go home,” Ryo mumbled, sitting. He felt his coach kneeling in front of him and start unlacing his skates for him. He tried to wait for both to be off, but didn’t make it before he lurched towards the nearest trash can and threw up mouthfuls of burning stomach acid. Tears ran down his face and his coach had to support him so he didn’t fall forward. “Wanna go. Alex,” Ryo groaned.
“Let’s just get your shoes off,” his coach said gently. Ryo rarely heard that tone from him. Somehow it made him feel even weaker. The second he had normal footwear on, he made a beeline for Alex and Shu, who were standing up and waiting for him on the side of the bleachers, obviously worried. “Home,” was the only thing he could say before collapsing into Shu’s arms.
////
Alex watched Ryo skate off the ice after his performance. It had been impressive, but Alex had barely paid attention. All he could see was how pale and terrible Ryo looked. He felt torn between telling Shu now and waiting like Ryo wanted him too. Even from here he could see Ryo panting heavily, clutching his abdomen as he doubled over in pain. He shouldn’t have let Ryo skate, Alex thought to himself. But Ryo had been so insistent, and all that practice he’d been doing for this competition for months shouldn’t have been wasted.
Alex watched as Ryo stumbled to stand up, then sat right back down at what appeared to be the insistence of his coach who started unlacing his skates for him. Alex bounced his leg anxiously, wanting to run over and make sure Ryo was okay. By now even Shu could tell something was terribly wrong, his expression pinched in concern. Ryo had only one skate off when he leapt up and just barely made it to the trash can a few feet away to puke. Alex couldn’t hear him from here, but he could imagine the sound wasn’t pleasant for anyone within earshot. He cringed, looking at Shu next to him who had the same grim expression.
Once his coach had managed to get Ryo into normal footwear, Ryo stumbled over to where Alex and Shu were sitting on the bleachers. Alex could see how twisted his face was with pain. “Home,” was all Ryo said, and Shu wrapped an arm around him and half carried him to the car.
"Why didn't you say anything, kid?" Shu asked. Alex watched his dad press his hand to Ryo’s cheeks and forehead with a deep frown, but it wasn’t necessary to know that Ryo was burning up.
"Didn't want you to make me stay home," Ryo muttered. “I could do it.” He didn't seem to be able to stand up straight thanks to the pain in his stomach. Alex wondered how he had even managed to finish his program in this state. God, he should’ve said something.
“Well, you did it,” Shu said with a worried shake of his head.
Alex glanced at the scoreboard as they went out the door. “Hey, you’re in second place, Ry,” he tried to cheer Ryo up. Ryo didn’t even acknowledge him, seemingly focused only on getting out of here as quickly as possible. They got Ryo into the car and headed towards home. Initially Ryo sat in his own seat, but soon the pain became so bad that he ended up lying down with his head in Alex’s lap. He was moaning and Alex awkwardly rested one hand on Ryo’s burning forehead.
“He had a fever last night, too,” Alex blurted out to Shu.
Shu glanced at them through the rear view mirror, his mouth set to a tight frown. "Seriously? You should've said something, bud."
"He asked me not to," Alex said. "I didn't think he was this sick."
"I'm right here," Ryo complained. "And I'm fine, my stomach just really - hnnngh - shit. Pull over!"
Thankfully they weren't quite on the highway yet and Shu was able to pull over quickly. Ryo struggled to sit up and yanked the car door open. He managed to get about three feet away from the car when he started throwing up on the side of the road. Alex stayed in his seat, frozen. He never knew what to do when people were in pain. It scared him honestly, and he assumed if he tried to comfort anyone it'd only make things worse.
Shu, though. Shu was good at comforting people, and Alex was relieved when Shu grabbed napkins from the glove box and joined Ryo on the side of the road. "That's alright Ryo, just get it all out," Alex heard him say. He held Ryo from falling forward and rubbed Ryo's back for a few minutes more before handing him the napkins and helping him back to the car. "Think you can make it home, kid?" Shu asked him.
"Yeah," Ryo grunted, leaving against Alex. He was sweaty and smelled of bitter vomit, but Alex helped Ryo get settled with his head back in his lap anyways. "Just go fast."
“Got it,” Shu said. True to his word, he sped down the highway towards home. But they weren’t quite there yet when Ryo seemed to be unable to hold it together any longer and began to cry. Alex buzzed with panic, unsure what to do. Tears weren’t something he could even begin to deal with.
“Dad,” he said. “I think something’s really wrong.”
Shu nodded. “Yeah. We’re going to the hospital,” Shu said, his tone implying that that had been Shu’s plan from the beginning. They made it to the ER and Shu scooped Ryo up into his arms, because Ryo seemed unable to even sit up for himself. He whimpered as Shu lifted him. “We’re gonna get you straightened out, kid, don’t worry,” he said. Ryo buried his face in Shu’s chest in response.
Alex followed behind his father as they went into the emergency room. Inside, Shu told the receptionist that something was terribly wrong and they needed to be seen right away. Thanks to the state Ryo was in, and the room being blessedly empty for a Saturday morning, he was triaged immediately with a nurse helping him onto a stretcher and taking his vitals. Alex felt his own stomach pang in pain when he saw how high Ryo’s temperature was.
Shu had to go fill out some paperwork and left the two of them together in their little curtained off corner. “Alex,” Ryo whimpered. “It hurts so bad.”
Alex didn’t know what to do to help. “I know,” he said. “But it’s fine. You’re gonna be fine.” What else could he say? He was useless in this situation. Shu returned ten minutes later, and then they had to wait an entire additional half an hour before a doctor came to examine Ryo. Shu rubbed Ryo’s hand comfortingly and Alex wondered how he was ever supposed to be good at caring for someone else. Instead, he felt like the only thing he could do was go find a doctor and yell until someone came to help. He was mature enough to know that wouldn’t really help though. Not yet anyways.
Thankfully a doctor finally came in and began studying Ryo’s chart on the computer, humming thoughtfully. He then pressed on Ryo's abdomen which elicited a loud whimper of pain from Ryo. “I’m sorry, but this is probably going to hurt,” he said. Ryo grimaced but nodded. The doctor then pressed down much harder on Ryo’s side, which seemed bad enough, but when he let go Ryo actually screamed and Shu had to stop Alex from darting forward protectively, his fists balled in anger. "Yup, seems like appendicitis," the doctor said. "We'll get a quick CT to confirm but I'm going to go ahead and put him on the board for an appendectomy now. Are you his father?"
"No, a family friend, he's just staying with us while his dad's on a business trip," Shu said. He sounded calm but Alex could see his nervous eye twitching. "We can call him though."
"Alright, let's do that to get consent," the doctor said. Shu started giving him the contact information and Alex went to Ryo's side where his best friend was still whimpering in pain. He took Ryo's sweaty hand in his own before he could stop himself, copying what Shu had done. Ryo looked at him with watery, scared eyes. Alex had never seen him hurting like this, even when Ryo broke his arm a few years ago. It unnerved him and he hated it.
Thankfully, a diagnosis meant pain meds were on the way. They gave Ryo morphine, which allowed him to sleep until that afternoon. Alex paced the room while Shu sat. “This is my fault,” he muttered.
“Alex, you didn’t know it was something serious,” Shu said calmly. “He’s going to be okay. I’ve had my appendix out, so have lots of people. It hurts like hell but he’ll be fine in no time.”
“You don’t know that!” Alex snapped. But losing his temper at Shu didn’t make him feel any better, so Alex muttered a quiet “Sorry” and sat down.
Shu pat his knee. “It’s okay,” he said. “You’re just worried because you care about him, that’s okay.” Alex didn’t deny it, something he usually would have done. It seemed too serious right now to argue.
When they took Ryo back for surgery, he was still mostly out of it from the morphine and his fever, but he reached for Alex as they rolled him towards the door. Alex swallowed and said, “Wait.” He squeezed Ryo’s hand and leaned close. “You’re gonna be fine,” he whispered into Ryo’s ear. “We’re not gonna leave you here.”
Ryo looked at him helplessly, but managed the tiniest smile. “Thanks,” he whispered back. Then the transporter took him away and Alex and Shu were left in the waiting room. Ryo’s dad called to say he’d gotten the first flight back home and would be there by evening.
It felt like they waited forever, but really it was only two hours before they were let up to a recovery room where Ryo was sleepily blinking at the nurses tending to him. Seeing him brought Alex a bolt of relief that he didn’t know would be so strong. He quickly went to Ryo’s side. The doctor updated Shu that the surgery had gone well, but all Alex cared about was seeing Ryo safe and no longer crying in pain.
“Did I place?” Ryo croaked, reaching for Alex’s hand again. Alex let him have it this time.
“What?” Alex asked, confused.
“My competition,” Ryo said.
Alex couldn’t help but snort. He’d completely forgotten about the competition by now. “I don’t know, who cares, idiot?” He said, but he couldn’t help but smile. Ryo smiled back weakly. He always seemed to know how to make Alex smile even in the most tense moments - maybe intentionally, it occurred vaguely to Alex. His feelings for Ryo were different from how he felt about anyone else. He didn’t know what to make of it yet, but he knew Ryo was the person who understood him best, somehow. He seemed to know what Alex needed even just waking up from surgery. It was so ridiculous that Alex laughed.
“You looked really gay out there,” Alex smirked. He squeezed Ryo’s hand. “But you did a good job. Not worth losing an organ over, but it was good.”
“Mm. Coming from you, I must’ve done really well,” Ryo said, closing his eyes with the little smile still on his lips.
In the end, Ryo came in third. His dad told him he was nuts and so did Alex. But the important part was that he’d made it through intact (minus one small and rather useless organ) and as much as Alex had hated seeing Ryo in such terrifying pain, he was glad he’d been there to hold Ryo’s hand. Maybe he’d do it again next time, but people only had one appendix so he doubted there would be a next time.
Hi! I'd love a ryo appendicitis fix if you write for that? Just read your last ego fic and I'm craving more!
Great minds must think alike, coz weirdly enough I have exactly that in the works! ;) Thanks for reading & the ask!

RWBY Recaps: Volume 8 “The Final Word”
Well, we made it to the finale, everyone, and if you're reading this it seems you've survived the watching of it too. Barely. To say that some questionable choices were made across these 20 minutes is... an understatement.
But before we delve into the episode, I want you to cast your mind back to November 7th, 2020. A horrible year that heralded a horrible RWBY volume. There, coming off the shaky writing of Volume 7, I posed a number of questions and concerns that the show needed to tackle, with the promise that we would return to these expectations in four months time. Now, here we are! Let's refresh everyone's memory, yeah?
Taken directly from that recap, what RWBY promised us, through various teasers and Q&As, included:
Emphasis on Ruby’s leadership and how Summer’s death has impacted her
Insight into Ren and Nora’s flaws
May Merigold will supposedly have a larger part
More information about The Long Memory (Ozpin’s cane)
Theme of the volume is that you can respect someone but that doesn’t necessarily mean you agree with them
Very short timeline (supposedly just two days)
Yang in particular is very suspicious and distrustful
And you know what? They did all this. In the spirit of being fair and honest to this show, RWBY succeeded in delivering on everything they promised... it was just our foolishness that expected that these ideas would be delivered well. Ruby's leadership took center stage in the form of her hiding for multiple episodes and then others telling her she's still The Best before the plot dropped a solution into her lap... one she could have used at any point prior to this. Summer's death certainly has an impact, though it's an impact born of a crazy reveal that Summer likely isn't dead, but turned into a horrifying grimm monster. Ren and Nora both delve into their flaws, but heaven forbid either grow from that reflection. Ren learns that if he pushes past his primary flaw of keeping his emotions buried and actually expresses his doubts for once, he'll be yelled at and ignored until he admits how wrong he was. The "real" flaw is being a bad friend, with "bad friend" equaling "Not agreeing with Ruby 100%." Meanwhile, Nora considers that maybe she shouldn't rush in recklessly and hit things with her hammer... which is why she rushes in recklessly, hits something with her hammer, gets grievously injured, and is told that this is just who she truly is. No growth there, not unless we count her sudden desire to figure out who she is without Ren... but that exploration hasn't started yet. Too bad she wasn't the teammate separated at the end of the volume!
Meanwhile, May did indeed have a larger role to play, one I quite liked, it's just that this role — like all the others — inevitably circled back to realizing how wonderful Ruby is. May challenges Ruby to make a decision, but instead of being the catalyst for Ruby's growth, May becomes another forgotten side character who does a sudden about-turn regarding her perspective, leaving the group with the contradictory message that Ruby is actually doing her best, she's just a kid, no need to try any harder... everyone who claimed otherwise up until now was mistaken. May is another Cordovin. She's another Qrow. She's another Maria.
Fun fact: we don't even know if Maria is alive right now. That's how little she means to the show!
Actually, wait... anyone remember this nonsense from Volume 7?
I was too lazy to change the date.
Moving on, Ozpin's cane turned out to be a stakes obliterating bomb that came out of nowhere, makes no sense logistically — how do battles store energy that only hurts grimm? — yet nevertheless seems to have killed Hazel? It's a disaster of unanswered questions. Similar to the disaster of our two day timeline when, I'm fairly sure, we've had an unnatural number of sunrises and sunsets. I'll have to take a look back at the volume as a whole now that it's complete to be sure of that though. As for our themes... did we really explore the idea of respecting someone even if you disagree with them? Because Ironwood wasn't shown any respect. Ren wasn't shown respect. I think the closest we got was Oscar calmly validating Yang's worry about getting buddy-buddy with Emerald, but the whole point there was that Yang was wrong. She wasn't wrong, but that's what the text would have you believe. She is indeed "very suspicious and distrustful," but that's hardly unjustified in these circumstances. I'm still boggling at the fact that it took the group three volumes for forgive Ozpin, even while he was actively working to assist them, yet I-helped-destroy-Beacon-and-tried-to-kill-everyone-you-love Emerald is the group's new BFF after she... ran away with Oscar? She didn't save him, she just went along for the ride. At the very least we might have gotten a scene where Penny was like, "Hey, why are you all laughing with the woman who just tried to kill my dad?"
But oh yeah, the story doesn't remember Pietro exists either. His daughter is DEAD and he hasn't been on screen since Episode Five, let alone there when she passes.
I had my own list going in, including such expectations as "Ozpin bb you got done dirty please acknowledge this" and "Queer baiting, queer baiting… you’re on thin ice at this point, RWBY. Just skate on over to the queer snack bar before you fall straight into the lake." Obviously these needs were not met.
So what, given this mess of expectations, did we end up with?
Our finale — for some reason — breaks the one word title trend with "The Final Word." It's an expression that refers to the final word in an argument or a discussion, the idea of winning by making a last, devastating point. It can also refer to making the final decision on something, which is the best way I'm able to apply the title to this episode (outside of any “final” comparisons). Penny's death is certainly all about choice and making some kind of decision... but on the whole, this title doesn't feel like it fits well. Not like "Worthy" or "Creation" or "Risk." The two latter titles had obvious connections to the episode in question through dialogue and plot, while the former was a deliberate callback to Watts' speech. "The Final Word" feels... less obvious in what it’s trying to say.
That's a minor nitpick though. Let's get into the meat of the episode.
We open on the grimm whale still disappearing, which is weird. I get that it's massively bigger than any other grimm we've seen, but they all turned to dust near instantaneously and it's been, what? At least an hour since Oscar blew it up? Likely longer when we factor in their walk back to the manor, the fight with Ironwood, fixing Penny, and this entire evacuation. It certainly makes for a nice visual, but like so many details in RWBY, it raises unnecessary questions along the way.
The important bit though is that amidst the whale carcass a blob of evil is swirling about. Salem, obviously.
She’s not reforming in time to actually do anything though, don't worry.
Instead, we cut to the Ironwood vs. Winter fight and there's at least some dialogue this time. Ironwood yells that he's sacrificed everything to keep Remnant safe. Winter yells back that he actually sacrificed everyone else. Obviously, Ironwood should be called out for things like, you know, his unprompted murders, but instead they have Winter listing stuff that she was never shown to have a problem with before. The embargo? "Squeezed Mantle until it broke?" She, as Ironwood's second hand, understood and supported both the decision to close the border and the need to collect resources for a plan designed to take out Salem. I hate that no only did she turn without an ounce of hesitation or grief, but now they're having her act as if Ironwood forced these decisions on everyone, rather than everyone supporting him through them. We all remember Volume 7 when Ruby pressured him to finish Amity, right? And in trust RWBY fashion, most of these words are meaningless. Mantle "broke"? What does that mean? The class disparity did not come about through Ironwood: that's been in the works for generations. The lack of resources made things harder, yes, but when they were reclaimed by Robyn nothing improved. Watts is the one who turned off the heat and Salem attacked Atlas, leaving Mantle alone. Now, all the citizens have escaped through magical portals. So how is Mantle "broken" exactly? More importantly, why is Winter upset over this vague, nonsensical dilemma when she could be yelling about Ironwood wanting to bomb Mantle?
Again: this woman watched Ironwood shoot the councilman, shrugged, and continued to believe in him up until she realized his bomb threat was real. That was one of the main reasons why I thought the councilman might be alive, with Ironwood only shooting a warning shot past him. Because this is how you react to a good person unexpectedly killing someone else
whereas this is what we got from Winter and Harriet.
Hell, Weiss has more of a reaction to Yang telling Ruby things aren't super great right now.
So either Ironwood didn't do something that bad, thereby justifying these tame reactions (unlikely, given where his character ended up), or we should believe based on the animation that everyone was super chill with him killing an unarmed civilian. Which is then directly contradicted when they're like, "You're going to shoot Marrow? Bomb a city?? How could you do such horrible things??? 😲" Friends, buddies, fictional pals... you already watched him murder a dude.
The point is, there's a lot for Winter to be upset about, but she's not upset about that. There's a lot that Winter herself believed in, but the writing has forgotten that. This entire arc went off the rails a volume ago.
Also, why is Ironwood fighting with that giant gun? This is his final battle, presumably ever, and he's wielding this awkward, sluggish weapon we saw him randomly pick up two episodes ago? Let him use his regular guns! Give us a fantastic battle like he had with Watts! Instead, RWBY's final showdown consists of him using this no-name weapon as a unwieldy club in some of the most boring choreography we've seen to date. It doesn't help that this fight needs to share time with three others. Instead of an epic showdown, we're given glimpses of the battle before continually cutting away from it.
During that first cut we return to the Team RWBY battle where Penny, doing her best to stay out of Cinder's reach, is whisked away on Weiss' wasp.
Too bad she didn't do that for Yang...
Jaune and Nora watch this horror unfold until Jaune says, "Priority one!" and they split. Except... what is priority one exactly? Helping the civilians? I guess, because they don't enter the fight until the very end of it, when everyone else seems to have made it to Vacuo. And you know what, I like that. For once it feels like the group — or at least the B Team — is acting like huntsmen, putting the needs of the people over their own, personal desires. I'm sure Nora wants to help the group after Yang's (presumed) demise and that Jaune would like nothing more than to get his hands on Cinder, but they put those grievances aside to do the work they signed up for. Good job!
My only real gripe is that we don't really see this struggling in the animation, I'm just assuming it's there. In particular, there's a moment when Jaune sends Nora through the portal for reinforcements — not knowing they can't return — and they seem a little too jovial when, by this point, three friends have died.
There's letting your cast be supportive, and then there's having them ignore that three teammates have perished in an abyss. It really doesn't help to sell the idea that Yang, Ruby, and Blake are in any danger here.
But I'm getting ahead of myself.
Penny tells Weiss that since Cinder is really just after the Maiden powers, she can buy the rest of the group time to escape. Weiss, obviously, isn't fond of this idea... and then the both of them are blasted off the wasp by Cinder's fire. Which they deserve, frankly. They're just having this casual conversation about sacrifice while in the middle of a battle. Did they somehow forget that Cinder can fly too?
Note that multiple attacks from Cinder, another blast, and a hard landing on the pathway gives their auras a knock, but doesn't break them. The primary defense for Yang's aura shattering in a single, simple hit was that everyone is exhausted and running on little to no power... yet here the rest of the cast is, tanking multiple hits as we've come to expect. There is no explanation for Yang's defeat except that the writers chose to ignore the rules of their world for a dramatic death scene... even though that drama was erased a week later as half our team falls into the void too.
We'll get to that though. For now, Cinder corrects Penny's belief with "I want it all" and proceeds to try to finish them off, only for Blake to arrive, having made her choice from last episode about who to help. It's a legitimately nice attack, but I happened to pause at the bEST MOMENT
Anyway.
We leave that fight to return to Qrow and Harriet who have, off screen, started an entirely different battle. What I mean is, last we saw Qrow had broken through the windshield of the airship, roughly pinned Harriet, and was taunting her about getting the fight she wanted. Now, suddenly, he's going “You’re making a mistake, Harriet, what happened to Clover—” as if he's been trying to talk her down this whole time. It's jarring, especially when we consider that Qrow had a volume long "kill Ironwood" arc that was dropped because... Robyn reminded him that murder is bad? RWBY feels like a storytelling pinball machine. Characters bounce from one personality to the next, one perspective and another, round and round until you don't know where they'll end up.
Harriet screams for Qrow to just shut up already and honestly? Same. I love Qrow, he's one of my favorites, but I can't deny that he's been done dirty like so many others since Volume 6. I love who Qrow was, not the mess RWBY has created the last few years.
Time to delve back into fic after recapping!
Sadly though, this strange dialogue wasn't the only "wtf" moment. Harriet is still trying to drop the bomb — which is its own mess of confusing motivations — when Vine and Elm show up on Harriet's ship. Elm begs Harriet not to do this "because you’re our friend!”
Am I glad that they finally acknowledged that the Ace Ops have always been friends? Sure, but why did we spend two volumes claiming otherwise? They were friends, a fantastic team, then Harriet announces that's a lie and we get a bunch of "Team RWBY is superior because they're actually friends" messages. Except this entire time we're still watching the Ace Ops be kind and playful with one another. But they're not friends, the story says. Not friends as they fight these battles. Not friends as they grieve for Clover. Definitely not friends as they react in horror at Ironwood nearly shooting Marrow. No, there's nothing there... until Elm claims there is! Then Harriet reacts in shock. I have friends?
Except Elm was labeled the one "just following orders" by Yang. Elm is the one who shook off Vine after the whale exploded. This isn't the story of one character, Harriet, thinking she was alone and then realizing that people do care for her, this is a story that, seemingly at random, had this group being BFFs or acting like they hated each other — and at each point the visuals are contradicted by the story's message. When they act like friends, we're told they're not friends. When they don't act like friends, we're told they really have been this whole time. I mean, do any of them even care that Marrow teamed up with Qrow and Robyn to take them out five minutes ago? All three were going along with Ironwood's scheme until they were physically stopped, but now Elm is convinced this is a bad decision she needs to talk Harriet down from with the power of friendship?
None of these characters are characters, they're just slapped together reactions based on whatever the plot needs. Who is Elm? I've got no clue. Her personality changes every episode.
Also, love that Qrow moves to stop the bomb from dropping and Harriet screams at him to "Get out of the way!" rather than just... attacking him? She even throws her hands out like she's having a temper tantrum. This feels like schoolyard bickering, not a life or death struggle.
Even though, you know, the audience is aware that the people of Mantle have already been evacuated and Qrow's group is aware that Atlas is falling on top of Mantle as they speak, so... why does the bomb matter? It's going to, what? Destroy the city thirty seconds before Atlas does? Oh no, the horror.
Things then, if you can believe it, get even worse. The bomb is still about to drop, so instead of doing anything to stop it — I mean seriously, we know it takes four people to shoulder the bomb's weight, but you're telling me Qrow and a reformed Harriet can't snag it in a pinch? — Qrow sits there, looks at Clover's pin... and the bomb careens towards the side of the airship instead, stopping.
Because I guess Qrow has good luck now? Or always did and somehow never noticed it? Or his semblance evolved?? Again, we don't know, but it's a bad moment any way you slice it, imo. Qrow has always been defined as the guy with a bad luck semblance and, much like Penny's android struggles, the allure was in watching him overcome those challenges, not having the show erase the challenge entirely. Especially when we don't even understand how it was erased. Qrow just... stops drinking, stops caring for Ironwood, stops wanting to kill Ironwood, stops causing bad luck, I guess. RWBY takes major character traits and flips them off like a light switch, leaving the audience with no emotional tether. We didn't watch Qrow overcome his drinking, or realize he can't bear to kill Ironwood, or discover a way to live life with the horrible hand he was dealt, he just blinks one day and those things are gone. Why? No one is sure. Not even the writers, I'd wager, because otherwise they would have written explanations into the text.
Many in the fandom insist that any basic information provided by the story amounts to "hand holding" when in fact there is a massive difference between the sort of unnecessary exposition that bogs down a tale, and having facts enough for the audience in its entirety to be on the same page about what is actually happening. For example, recently someone argued strongly that the "Penny is human" take is incorrect because Penny isn't human, she has an inhuman body made entirely of aura... yet where in the world does this exist in the story? Ambrosius may have been unsure about what Penny would be prior to removing her robotic parts, but that ambiguity is gone once her body forms, the equivalent of worrying about that gun only for a flag with 'BANG' to appear instead of a bullet. Worrying about something doesn't mean that something actually occurred. Penny appears human, expresses human sentiments, and then, this episode, dies as a human. If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck and succumbs to the mortal peril that all ducks face... it's probably a duck. As I said in a recent ask, I implore the fandom to stop writing RWBY's scripts for them. Or rather, do so in some amazing fanfics. Don't do it on critical posts as a means of insisting that your revision is canon.
So Qrow has good luck now, maybe, but this character change doesn't amount to anything because Watts remotely starts the bomb's countdown.
At least he’s entertaining and competent. We had that for a time.
Back to the main battle, Neo is kicking Ruby's ass. Why? Because there's no consistency in power levels in this show. The ancient woman who hasn't fought in decades dances circles around Neo, highlighting how weak she supposedly is, yet now Neo dances circles around our main character. None of us should expect fights to follow the logic of the world, only what drama the plot wants to stir up. Ruby is eventually knocked down from a hard hit — yet her aura's intact! — and is saved at the last second by Weiss tossing Neo into one of the portals.
Far more of a problem than the power leveling is that Ruby gives no indication here that Neo just murdered her sister. Again, that's what the characters are meant to believe, yet Ruby is as stoic as she would be fighting a bunch of White Fang grunts. If you showed this scene to a RWBY fan on its own and asked, "What do you think happened prior to this?" the answer would be, "Uh... nothing? Ruby is just fighting Neo like she did on the airship in Volume 3." Nothing about this scene — from dialogue to animation — sells the idea that Ruby just lost the person most important to her in the world.
When we do finally mention Yang, it's Weiss who goes, “Come on, we have to do this for Yang” and the delivery is... meh. Honestly, I normally don't pay much attention to the voice acting, but I had a problem with most of Weiss' lines this episode. The "Leave her alone!" during this fight and later a "Get back!" as she attacks Cinder both fell really flat for me. Given the devastation and charged emotion that's supposed to be here, we can't give her anything better than generic cries that, again, she’d throw at any grunt? In that later scene the animation absolutely helps sell Weiss' distress, but the dialogue is common and the delivery has no emotional punch, leaving it feeling like Yang is just hanging out in Vacuo and they promised they'd beat the baddies before catching up with her. No one but Blake is acting like Yang died.
In fact, we see more emotion from Ruby when Weiss shoves her back, taking the brunt of Cinder's blast.
Weiss' aura breaks, not that that's a danger or anything. Everyone falls before they're injured, Winter gets the Maiden powers, Ren barely has to fight. Losing aura in this show used to be a moment of peril, where just last volume Winter was bruised, bleeding, and now needs an assistive device because she had to continue a battle with no aura. Now it's a joke. Aura breaks left and right across the volume with no repercussions attached to that.
We see a bit of the Blake and Penny vs. Cinder fight where Cinder blasts Blake off the edge. Penny rushes after her because at least one character remembered that they can fly.
Ruby, meanwhile, remembers that she can fly when it benefits her. After getting hit down onto a lower level and watching Crescent Rose plummet, she taunts Neo into an attack with a move that's actually quite good. I like the confidence with which Ruby riles her up and I like the strategy of darting behind Neo to knock her off the path instead. “Whatever you wanted, I hope it was worth it."
The only thing I don't like is that this speed and ingenuity had to disappear to justify Yang falling.
Cinder breaks Ruby's aura from behind though, sending her over too and grabbing onto Neo's leg. In an obvious moment born of the trope, it looks as if Cinder is reaching to help Neo, only for her to snag the Relic instead. “You should have never threatened me," she tells Neo and to Ruby: "you should have never been born.”
Love that they erased all that cool growth from last episode! And by "love" I mean "hate." As I said last recap, I'm not going to pretend that Cinder's character isn't riddled with problems, but realizing she was stronger by teaming up with Neo and Watts was one of the best things they've ever done for her. It made Cinder dangerous again and showed Watts' speech having a clear impact. It also made her more entertaining, creating a new dynamic among the three villains. Now though, Cinder is just... Cinder. The same boring, stupid Cinder we've had since Volume 4. She betrays Neo and then later betrays Watts.
So Cinder kicks Neo and Ruby both over the edge because why would we want to make her interesting? Neo falls, but Ruby has friends there to catch her! Unlike Yang. Jk. Weiss’ aura is gone and Blake actually tried both times, so major kudos for her. Using momentum supplied by Penny, she snags Ruby and hooks her weapon into one of the pathways... only for Cinder to cut the ribbon. Both plummet and once again Penny has a more believable reaction to all this, just like she did last week
Speaking of reactions, does anyone else find it weird that Cinder finally succeeded in killing Ruby and... doesn’t seem to care?
No? Just me?
At least we get that good animation with Weiss I was talking about before, even if the dialogue is lacking. I love that she snagged Blake's weapon and uses it to try and take out Cinder, shaking the whole time. Those are some great details.
Back to the bomb, Qrow is trying to escape, but Harriet says there isn't enough time to get out of the blast range. "I've killed us all." Vine has the solution though, using his semblance to wrap up the airship, thus containing the blast when it goes off. His final words are to reassure Elm that he can give his life, "if it means saving all of my friends." Just in case you missed the part about the Ace Ops being super close this whole time. Even though they also weren’t. Trying to eat your cake too, RWBY?
Frankly, I didn't feel much of anything during this scene, not when Vine made the sacrifice, nor when Elm and Harriet look on sadly while Robyn pilots them away (that's her contribution this episode).
All I can say is, good on RWBY for not killing one of the three dark skinned characters, or just murdering the Ace Ops as a whole. What the story is going to do with them though, who knows.
Jaune and Nora have that ‘You can do it!’ moment after three of their friends have presumably been killed. I swear, about 80% of Jaune's scenes do not work tonally and oh boy, things only get worse from here.
First though, I like his entrance. He slams into the fight against Cinder and lines up with Penny and Weiss, who is still dual-wielding her and Blake's weapons. That's an epic shot.
It looks as if they stand a decent chance against Cinder — Weiss' lost aura notwithstanding — except then Cinder's arm starts going crazy and she gleefully announces that Salem has returned.
Working on a time limit now, Cinder unleashes a volley of attacks that Penny steps in to protect the other two from. It's here that Cinder grabs hold with her grimm arm.
It's here that Penny dies. Again.
For the third time.
Friends, I am tired. This moment honestly deserves the most epic of rants, but that, in turn, requires energy. Energy? In this economy? Ha! That's hilarious. Taking this seriously though, the problem here can — as usual — be boiled down to a single question: What was the point?
Penny died in a horrible attack that shook the cast and audience both to their core.
That emotional impact was erased through her resurrection.
The resurrection did not create a new emotional impact for our heroes to grapple with.
Penny is given the Maiden powers, solidifying the fact that she's always been a "real girl."
That lesson was erased when the story decided to make her human for unexplained reasons (because no, she never needed to be human to survive the virus).
Penny then dies, passing the power to Winter... who was set to get the power in the first place.
We have, once again, come full circle. You can take Penny out of the story and nothing changes. Does Ruby lose any lessons or emotional growth? No. Does anyone survive who would have otherwise died? No. Does her getting the powers lead to someone unexpected snagging them upon her death? No. Penny's existence was filler. She was put in the story to take up time and, that done, was removed from the story once again. It's a choice that wouldn't be half as horrible if that filler hadn't done so much damage along the way.
First is the obvious: that Penny didn't deserve this. As a character, she didn't deserve to be brought back just to be killed off again, seemingly without narrative purpose, serving only to draw in viewers who RT knew loved the character. Second, keeping her in the story led to her entire arc unraveling. Initially, Penny died as an android in the world's eyes, but those who actually knew her — Ruby and Pietro — mourned the girl she really was. Now we have this horrible message that being a machine isn't real enough, so she has to die as a human being. It's a disservice to her character and, as an allegory for many minorities, downright insulting to the audience. Third, this offensive 'better to die as a human than live as a robot' message is wrapped up in the claim that Penny finally gets to choose something — “Let me choose this one thing. Trust me” — but she already did that when she chose to take the Maiden powers. We already had the better written version of this last volume!
And the fourth issue...well.
Fourth and fifth are the real kickers. Fourth is that Penny's death was an assisted suicide. She explicitly asks Jaune to kill her so she can ensure she's thinking of the right person when she passes (never mind that her thoughts would probably be on Jaune while this is happening) and that's... pretty horrible. Look, I'm no purist. I like a great deal of dark, gritty stories whose plot exists to make us uncomfortable. That's a valuable emotion that fiction can generate. The problem is not that RWBY is tackling a sensitive topic, but that they aren’t tackling it well. Yes, they put in a content warning and (from what I've heard) a suicide helpline as well, but providing the already necessary resources is not the same thing as writing that kind of scene with respect and care. All of the above tells us that, no matter what RT may have intended, that respect and care weren't communicated to the audience. Like Yang, they didn't even bother to keep Penny's death within the rules of their world. Jaune is right there ready to heal her and Penny says no, there's supposedly not time.
Um... since when?
Jaune's aura boost is instantaneous. The second he amplifies aura is the same second the healing starts and their talk could have been spent saving Penny. There was certainly time to save Weiss in Volume 5. To have a character go, 'Nah, it's too late' when the solution is right there is the ultimate cop-out. Suddenly announcing that the solution will no longer work For Reasons is not a legitimate limitation and it's made doubly insulting that RT didn't simply use the limitations already available to them. Jaune has been running low on aura since the whale. He then expended a great deal of aura boosting Penny to keep the virus in check. Every other ally has had their aura broken in this fight so, there. That's your solution. Have Jaune take a few hard hits from Cinder, his aura breaks, and then when Penny is mortally wounded he no longer has a semblance to heal her. It's that easy! Yet instead they had Penny reject help so that she could ask to die. That's what's offensive here.
Finally, reason number five... why is this moment given to Jaune? That's another easy solution: Jaune has gone through the portal and can't get back to heal Penny. There. Done. But logistics aside, this scene should have gone to any other character. Who is Jaune to Penny? Or Penny to Jaune? No one! They don't have a relationship. I get that the writers didn't want any of the girls at her side because then it would be hard to justify Penny not passing the power to them (which I get: making one team member a Maiden changes the show drastically), but you know who should be there instead of Jaune?
Pietro.
Pietro, who built Penny as a weapon and who was never given the chance to apologize for that. Pietro, who told Ruby he could only rebuild her once more, setting up an expectation that he'd sacrifice himself for his daughter (despite the complicated racial issues that would bring up). Pietro, who watched Penny plummet and has no idea what happened to her, let alone that she's been made into a human girl. Pietro should have been at her side, saying goodbye to his child and helping her complete her last wish.
And it would be so very easy to pull off. All it takes is a single line where Penny remembers that her father exists, asking Ruby to ensure a portal opens up in Amity. There's a quick reunion along the pathways before Cinder attacks. We hear a cry of despair as Penny falls and she looks, seeing her father racing towards her, though she thought he'd already made it out. There, you’re done. We open ourselves up to a lot of attacks whenever we say, "Why didn't RWBY just do ____?" because those who vehemently defend the writing like to go, "Oh, you think you could write RWBY better?" and no, I don't. I struggle with long-form storytelling and massive casts. I don't think I could do justice to the sort of show RWBY wants to be, but I do think I'm a decent enough writer to spot when there are major problems like this. The question of "Why doesn't Penny remember that her beloved dad exists?" and "Why, out of that massive cast, is Jaune the one to do this deed?" are both things that a newbie writer can spot, and a sometimes okay writer can figure out how to fix them both simultaneously. A good writer will start thinking about themes — what might it mean for Pietro to kill the creation he made? — and a great writer will find a way to pull that off without having that insulting, discomforting feeling pop up. At this point, our RWBY crew feels less like new writers making mistakes (because they're not new, not at all), but rather just writers who haven't bothered to learn from their mistakes after eight years. That's a lot harder to watch.
Because putting Jaune here doesn't just mess with RWBY's internal rules (not using his semblance) and it's not just useless in terms of Penny's development (she doesn't know him outside of "dude who boosted my aura for an hour"), but it also falls back into a pattern I thought RWBY had finally broken from: making Jaune the story's emotional center. This is not the JAUNE show. It's the RWBY show. Yet here, once again, we have Jaune in the spotlight. Why, after a whole volume of Ruby avoiding making decisions, does Jaune finally make the hard call? Why, after a scene where Penny asked Ruby to kill her, does Jaune do that deed? Why, after a divisive arc where all the grief for Pyrrha went to Jaune, is Jaune now set to shoulder the grief of Penny? At least Jaune had a relationship with Pyrrha, even if Nora and Ren did too. Yet with Penny he seems to be there solely because the writers can't bear to keep him out of that center spot for long. All of Team JNOR make it through to Vacuo... except Jaune. Jaune falls into the abyss too because, if the show goes this route, we apparently can’t have a volume just about Team RWBY, the main characters. The main characters are separated from the rest of the team and it's Jaune, not Oscar and Ozpin with a connection to the lore, not Nora or Ren whose development now hinges on them learning who they are without the other, it's Jaune who follows the title characters into a new dimension.
The issue is not whether Jaune deserves to grieve over the truly traumatic thing he just did now that he’s done it. He obviously does. The issue is the writers setting up a scenario where Jaune is situated to do that emotional work in the first place.
I like Jaune as a character. I don't like how the writing uses him as a character. RWBY is built on the idea that these four girls are the heroes of this tale, not the expected blond, blue-eyed, sword wielding guy we’ve seen in so many other stories. So why does that guy get the most important scene of the finale? Yes, Jaune had much less screen time this volume than he did in the past, that’s a good thing given the number of important characters RWBY has to balance, but that hasn't erased the problem of him being given significant moments that should be going to title characters. Does Ruby’s team rescue Oscar and take on Salem? No, Jaune's team does. Does Ruby's team save Penny? No, Jaune's semblance keeps her grounded and then holds the virus off. Not everything is a problem — we've also got good choices like having Ruby defeat the Hound and Ruby's team take on Cinder for the majority of the fight — but that doesn't erase that Penny’s death wasn’t something Jaune should have been a part of. Not unless he was going to heal her. Doing better than they have in the past doesn't mean that RT isn't still slipping when it comes to giving him undeserved focus.
They took one of the most controversial characters, controversial because of how much emotional focus he's gotten in the past, and had him help a fan favorite commit suicide while he cried about it, showing more emotion for a near stranger than our title character showed for her sister. This is a character who, up until two or three episodes ago, had no connection to the victim and still has no reason to thematically be the one committing this act. That is why the fandom goes, “The crew loves Jaune and does everything they can to put him in the center of the action.” Ruby, as main character and Penny’s first friend, is the obvious choice here. Pietro, as Penny's father, would be a good choice too. Hell, Nora is a better option given their moment in the Schnee manor this volume. Or Winter given their moments in Volume 7! Have her escape Ironwood, find Penny, receive the powers, and then finish him off. Literally anyone would be better than Jaune, not because Jaune is a bad character, but because Jaune has no emotional stakes here and putting him in a position where he could heal Penny but doesn’t is massively stupid. No one should be surprised that a lot of the fandom is upset about this. It was one hell of a reach to give him this moment and, since Jaune's problem has always been getting too much screen time and emotional nuance compared to our main cast, it's no wonder this act brought up a lot of bad memories. RT fell back into an old pattern after two volumes of improvement and they did so at the worst possible time.
The tl;dr is that Penny's third death is a writing travesty, just like her second. I shouldn't be surprised, given that this is the same volume that tortured a kid and the only thing they did with it was have him blindly trust his torturer... yet I find myself surprised nonetheless. Because Penny had such potential as an android Maiden and, as much as I personally hated it, potential as a former android learning to be human too. But why explore any of that when you can kill her off instead? Again.
As a final, far smaller note about this scene, we have the continuing problem of what purpose Cinder's arm is serving. If everyone recalls, its threat comes primarily from the fact that she can "siphon off" power from other Maidens.
She did it to Penny during the Amity battle and now she does it again, a great deal of green energy absorbed into Cinder. So what's left to give to Winter? Why doesn't Cinder become noticeably stronger with each successful theft? Like so much else in RWBY, we're told it exists without actually seeing the impact of that. Winter isn't a weaker Maiden for having lost power and Cinder isn't a stronger Maiden for having snagged it. It's just.. there, hanging out and looking vaguely menacing, I guess.
Outside of this unnatural not-transfer, we get to see how the power normally passes as Penny meets with Winter in some in-between place. It's a soft, heartfelt scene... with the exception that Winter says, “You were always the real Maiden at heart. I was just the machine. Just following orders."
I don't know how any viewer can doubt that RT now believes machinery = evil. Penny's machine body is magicked away so she can be a real-real girl. Yang announces that the arm she worked hard to make a part of herself is just "extra." The man with half a metal body is made this volume's villain and losing his second arm is, by the authors' own admission, a symbol of his lost humanity. Mercury with two metal legs remains a bad guy while Emerald and Hazel are hastily redeemed. Tyrian with his cybernetic tail is the most devoted crazy of the bunch. Maria, blind and in need of assistive lenses, is so forgotten by the story she was left in the tundra nine episode ago and won't be mentioned again until next volume (if then). Pietro, the guy in the wheelchair, is forgotten too, despite it being his daughter who dies on screen.
Now Winter, also bearing an assistive device, says that she's the real "machine" here and tells Penny, now human, that she was always the "real Maiden." I don't know what happened to make RT do a 180 lately, but the disability rep is no longer what it was.
Penny reassures Winter that she'll always be a part of her and then passes on, for good this time.
The rest of the episode feels lackluster, if I'm being honest. Images of Cinder beating Weiss are intercut with Ironwood beating Winter, getting her to a point where her aura breaks.
But then the powers appear and, as we'd expect, she easily turns the tide.
Gorgeous animation there.
But RT once again rewrites earlier scenes by having Ironwood claim that the "destiny" he chose for Winter has finally arrived — isn't that Cinder's MO? — and Winter shoots back that he chose nothing, this was a "gift." Except, it was never about destiny or orders? This was why Weiss' anger in Volume 7 was ridiculous. She acted like Ironwood forced Winter to accept the powers and Winter told her point blank she chose this. Ironwood didn't decide anything, he offered and Winter chose... kind of like how Penny is choosing now. I hate how nearly all of Ironwood's character has been ignored or, during times like this, outright lied about to make him seem super duper evil. He tried to bomb a city! You don't need to make him seem evil anymore, that job is done! Like their sudden change regarding disability, RT now seems to be allergic to nuance. Heaven forbid Ironwood be allowed to have valid points like he did in Volume 3. No, if you've got an antagonist every single thing they've ever said must be twisted into a display of their evilness.
Unless you're Hazel, who Oscar trusts for #reasons. Unless you're Emerald, who the group immediately embraces. Unless you're Cinder, who gets to cry on a rooftop and secures the trust of her allies long enough to betray them again.
But Ironwood? Nah, screw that guy.
Salt aside, the fight is pretty boring. Winter literally just throws up a wall of ice and Ironwood's blast rebounds, taking him out.
Winter flies through the portal and we return to Jaune. His sword is broken by Cinder, so weapons should be quite the problem in Volume 9.
There's a bit of sword vs. sword Maiden battling — this episode really pulled heavily from both Volume 3 and 5's finales — before Cinder gets smart again and attacks Weiss, currently trying to escape with Jaune. Weiss goes right off the edge and Winter isn't able to reach her in time. That's the entirety of Team RWBY, lost to the magical void.
Kudos to Winter's VA and the writing here though. This feels like an appropriate reaction to losing a sister. Screaming, sobbing, falling to her knees and beating the floor... Ruby, take notes.
A roar sounds through all the portals though, the sort of roar a pissed off witch might give. Jaune convinces Winter they need to leave Cinder behind, but before they can escape Cinder... makes a new wish?
Look, it works on all the major fronts. Cinder has the staff, check. We've basically established that Ambrosius can make an unlimited number of things per era, check. We know the previous thing disappears when a new wish is made, check. My only question is the timing. In all honesty, I'll have to re-watch the scene to be sure, but at the time it felt like the portals began disappearing almost the second Cinder left. Did she really have time to summon Ambrosius, deal with his explanatory nonsense, and get him to make a new wish without any fiddly concerns? Sure, fire is just fire, but it still felt like way too much happening too fast off screen.
Either way, the portals are gone and Winter makes it through in time, but Jaune does not. He falls through the void along with Team RWBY. And Neo.
Neo is the only addition I'm looking forward to here.
We get a few shots of our other characters as Winter arrives, saving the day by taking her grief out on the grimm. So glad something came of Ren breaking his aura again! Maybe they'll be more fighting at the beginning of Volume 9? If we see any of this group outside of 9's finale. My worst fear right now is that we'll spend an entire season away from the main action — remember how I said it would be stupid for Team RWBY to go on a side adventure while Salem is attacking the world? — and when they return there will have been some major time skip. Salem has destroyed most of Remnant, only pockets of survivors remain, it's all dark and dystopian... and oh look, every bit of character development happened off screen. How did Nora discover who she is without Ren? She did it while Team RWBY was gone. That merge we've been teasing for five years? That happened while you were gone too and, btw, Ozpin has ceased to exist. So sad, right? Not that anyone will actually mourn. Just take comfort in the fact that his last line was an "Oh no" about Ambrosius and his last major scene was apologizing for how the group treated him. Emerald's redemption? Off screen. Winter's grief? Off screen. Any and every one of these challenging beats to tackle can be waved away with, "We went through that arc while you were lost in the magical realm. Just get to know our new, improved selves now!"
Please, oh writing gods, don't let that happen.
Though I do worry because my last prediction came true.
But we all knew we’d end up here. My current theory? The portal should still be open at the vault. Winter will fight Ironwood, escape through it, and it will close right before he escapes too. He’ll fall with Atlas and everyone will act as if it’s some beautiful, poetic justice for him to perish with the city.
Ironwood didn't make a break for the portal — too busy being unconscious — but we got everything else. Winter left him, he falls with Atlas, and this is some poetic justice, I guess. Really, it's just an undignified death. I'd hoped for a sympathetic kill, something that showed the characters still cared about him even if they knew Ironwood had to be stopped. Baring that, I'd hoped for an epic battle that took him out with style. Instead, no one even bothers to kill him. Ironwood is now beneath the entire cast, not even worth finishing off. Winter casually tosses his blast back at him and leaves. Cinder throws out a "that's checkmate" and leaves. I don't think Salem even looks at him. Ironwood (presumably) dies with no one and nothing, just a casualty of the city Team RWBY made fall. And I say "presumably" because the audience isn't even given the satisfaction of being sure he's passed on. Like Hazel, Ironwood's death is this weird, ambiguous moment that, based on the other character reactions, isn’t meant to be ambiguous. Is he dead? Most likely. Is it possible, based on what we've seen, that he'll pop up two volumes later like
Yes and, memes aside, that sucks. I don't want to be wondering for the next couple years if Ironwood survived and if they'll bring him back just to drag his character through the mud again. Move on.
But no, we don't even get that.
I've spoken at great deal about Ironwood both in these recaps and on my blog more generally. Last week, I said I'd covered it all and there was no need to rehash it all again. I stand by that, so let me just conclude this travesty with a final note: if your bad guy's final moment is using the last of his strength to point a gun at the actual villain of this story, and you don't realize the problem of how this image contrasts everything else the story has insisted about his character? … I just don't know what to do with that.
Oh, actually, final-final note: Ironwood’s semblance is officially a Schrodinger's semblance. It is both canonical and noncanonical simultaneously. Wooo.
Cinder tells Salem she used her wish to "add more flames to the first of Atlas" and we cut to Watts, trapped in a roaring fire, unsuccessfully trying to break his way out. Wow, I hate that too! Next to Tyrian, Watts was our last remaining, entertaining villain. He carried a lot of the last two volumes and, I had hoped, was going to add some bright spots to the coming volumes as well. Apparently not.
Just another waste.
In addition to this casual, second murder of her ally, Cinder successfully convinces Salem that Neo killed Ruby and Ruby used the Lamp's last question, but she's back in her good graces since she snagged the Relics anyway. “You’ve done well, Cinder. Our work here is done" and they leave, blasting off like a less cool Team Rocket as Atlas plummets into Mantle.
Let's spend a second to tally things up then, shall we? What happens if Ruby, instead of throwing a moral fit, says, "You're right and we never should have lied to you, or betrayed you. But we want to help now. You get the Relics and the Maiden to safety in Atlas, if you can, we'll defend the people of Mantle"?
Well, they can still tell the world about Salem and call for help, much more easily now since Ironwood would likely just give them the code rather than them needing to spend an episode stealing it.
The Staff at least may not have ended up in Salem's hands and the group could have actually focused on getting the Lamp back (also solved if they'd been smart and just put it in the vault to begin with).
Mantle would still have been safe because Salem was never interested in Mantle to begin with.
Atlas wouldn't have fallen.
Ironwood wouldn't have died.
Penny wouldn't have died.
Even Vine wouldn't have died!
Our heroes unambiguously made the situation worse. Rather than banding together with their allies to fight the real enemy, Salem, they pushed until they made enemies of Ironwood and the Ace Ops both. Then they asked for help — which a pinch of logic said would never arrive — and twiddled their thumbs waiting for it. When it was clear none would come they...did nothing. They sat around, upset that the people were in danger, but not willing to do anything about it. It's only when one of their own, Penny, is threatened that they kick into high gear, hitting on a solution that they could have posed to Ironwood from the very start if no one liked the fly away plan. Yet instead of taking a few minutes to brainstorm other ideas — doing anything other than denouncing Ironwood to the rest of the group and attacking the Ace Ops — they spent two days sitting around, fixing minor messes they’d helped to create, then rushed through the portal plan, messing up the wish and stranding an entire kingdom in a sandstorm, with only Winter now to protect them from grimm.
Fantastically done, team.
The villains won, yes, but not because the villains were smart and compelling. Watts' hack on Penny and the heat petered out to nothing and Salem... well, she sat around for the whole volume, expending energy only to torture Oscar and try to (unsuccessfully) stop some escapees. Neo and, miraculously, Cinder did the most damage, but only in the final hour, with this "damage" being that our characters fall into a void that we now know looks remarkably like a paradise! Everything bad that happened was a result of our heroes being stupid and stubborn. That's a compelling story to tell... but RT isn't trying to tell it. Our heroes caused so much damage, yet that damage goes unacknowledged — or worse, ignored into silence like with Ren — and everything else is waved away with the magic wand the series claims isn't there. The cold doesn't kill anyone. Oscar has no problems walking off the torture. Nora hops back out of bed. Ruby one-shots the Hound. The civilians lost to the void must have survived too. The entire kingdom successfully makes it to Vacuo... unless you count the massive army we never saw making use of the portals, but who cares about them, right?
The villains won, there was indeed something resembling consequences, but none of it was emotionally satisfying. Not even when the series tries so hard to insist that emotion is there.
Qrow watches Atlas fall, mouthing Ruby and Yang's names, but it's too little, too late. Where was this care for his nieces when he was obsessed with killing Ironwood? When did they care about him? Was it when Ruby shrugged at his arrest, when neither cared that he was missing, or when they were designing an escape plan that didn't include putting a portal where Qrow could reach? RWBY markets itself around the found family-ness of its cast, but they're done a poor job in recent volumes (not others) of convincing me that most of these characters care for one another. We went from Ruby denouncing all adults, to Ruby pulling an Ozpin with Ironwood, to Ruby watching blandly as her sister falls to her presumed death. This is my hero? This is the simple soul we're supposed to rally behind? Ruby doesn't feel like a character who cares about other people anymore and, given that she leads the charge, neither do most of her friends. Or, when that emotion appears, it's jarring and undeserved. Jaune cries over Penny's death? That's tonally and characteristically backwards.
This volume was the culmination of so many mistakes over the past two years. No, Covid couldn't have made things any easier for the crew — the fact that they got a volume out at all is amazing — but the pandemic isn't to blame for the problems in the story. These seeds have existed since Volume 5, with some (like Jaune) going back even farther. I don't think we're ever going to get that flawed, but emotionally fulfilling RWBY back. The show has dug too deep and unless it somehow manages to create a clean slate — those time travel ideas get more and more alluring! — there's nothing they can do but keep on digging. At this point, I can only hope that the series does wrap up within the next two volumes, rather than dragging RWBY to a Supernatural-esque length.
Our final shot of the episode proper feels fitting for what this volume has been. Atlas and Mantle flood rather than exploding, something that makes a certain amount of sense, sure, but definitely wasn't what I was expecting. And after all these shocking images — Penny dying, the grimm attacking, our main characters disappearing in a puff of gold dust — we end it all with bits of random debris. It's strange and underwhelming. Out of everything you could have done with the options you had, you choose to do this?
Of course, RWBY always has an after-credits scene (RIP Raven's, still amounting to nothing). Here, the sounds of water return to show us a beach. Crescent Rose imbedded in the sand, mirroring its classic pose in the snow.
There's a tree. It's a very different kind of tree from what we saw in Volume 6, but the height and shape is nevertheless reminiscent of Light's domain.
A tree of life, anyone? After all, the group has fallen into a dimension created by a Relic, the gift of Light himself. It certainly seems as if RWBY is heading towards another encounter with the Gods, though what that will look like and how narratively satisfying it will be remains to be seen.
As for our bingo board, RWBY certainly pulled its weight! Only three squares got gold stars: Watts and Jacques didn't manage another team up because both are dead, Oscar didn't apologize for getting shot because he was too busy being tortured, and Qrow didn't drink likely because he didn't have access to any alcohol across the whole volume. Can't say that's a stellar result. The final image is something to behold though lol.
What a mess.
And on that less than exciting note... we’re done. This has been the volume of desertion, with a large number of fans telling me that they will no longer watch RWBY, but baring something entirely unexpected in my future, I'll be back next volume, for whatever that's worth. It never ceases to amaze me that even one person would give these nonsense recaps the time of day, so in all seriousness: thank you for reading. You rock.
Now go forth and fill the hiatus with great RWBY content!

Ámbar feels like every step she takes, the more she can feel her heartbeat. It’s like she’s carrying it in her arms with nothing to guard it, out in the open alone. She opens the cold rusted handle of the entrance to the restaurant. There she is, her biological mom trembling while drinking a glass of water. Ámbar sums up all the courage inside her and takes the chance to approach her. When she grabs the seat in front of her, Sylvania can’t help but stare in shock. “Wow Ámbar, you truly have grown.” Ámbar may have brought all her walls down for the people she loves, but she puts them back up with this stranger.
“You can’t say that since you were never there for me. That’s no fair,” Ámbar chided. Sylvania chokes up and avoids eye contact. “Look Ámbar, I now know after everything that has happened the big mistake I made, but at the time it felt like the best option for you. I was young and didn’t have the means nor felt ready to take care of a child. I thought Sharon would’ve been a better parental figure instead of a young girl like myself. I later on regretted it and that’s something I shall have to carry with me for the rest of my life.”
Ámbar grips onto her purse trying very hard to hold back all her tears. She wonders why did this lady chose Sharon specifically and why did Sharon try to keep it a secret for so long? “I understand you were young, but I know that’s not the whole story because I have memories being in a different house that was NOT Benson Mansion. You saw me, you knew me, and didn’t like me enough to keep me,” Ámbar rebuked. Sylvania is showing tears now, she’s choking up with every word as her hand trembles just to take a sip of water. “It wasn’t like that at all Ámbar. I tried, I really did try to see if I was capable of taking care of a child. I noticed my arms weren’t so comforting for you. Sometimes when you love someone, so much, you have to let them go because you care,” Sylvania responded. Ámbar doesn’t know whether to believe what she’s saying or not. She wishes she can get out of these tornadoes of lies that always come chasing her. She’s sick of it all. She wants the truth. Is that too much to ask for?
Silence crowds the room, they’re breathing the same air but can’t even look at each other. Sylvania speaks up again. “I know this feels hard to believe but why do you think I came back? It was for that reason, I thought Sharon would be a better parent than me and would take great care of you. I realized I was sadly wrong.”
“Sharon? Of all people? What made you think that a woman who put a place on fire because she was jealous of her own sister would be a perfect parent for a child? Do you know she never showed me affection or love? I had to learn it all on my own. She only showed any signs of care when she needed me part of her plan that only benefitted her. You left me to a person who only cares about themselves,” Ámbar fumed.
“It wasn’t like that at all. I had no idea about her being the cause of the Benson fire and she had already adopted you before that even happened. When I met her, she was a kind woman, I was friends with Lili from work, so I had already knew the family. I assumed that Sharon had a good heart just like Lili, even though she was seemingly different. The whole time I would interact with her, she was always nice and seemed to really want a child because she always felt alone. It all just felt fitting.” Ámbar is trying to put together all the puzzle pieces in her head with Sylvania’s story. Part of her doesn’t believe it but…. It does kind of make sense. For her it justifies nothing even though she has hope.
Before she gets up from her seat, she leaves a wad of cash. “Ámbar where are you going? We haven’t even ordered yet?” Sylvania asks. “I’m not feeling hungry anymore, here’s some money for dinner.” Ámbar heads out the door with no remnants behind other than the tears that fall to the floor.
Jam and Roller
“Eyyy amigo I’m so happy for the release of your new music video!” Gastón exclaims to Matteo. They’re both drinking smoothies while watching the Youtube countdown from Matteo’s phone. These are the special moments Matteo loves to share with Gastón since he’s always been his pal for the longest. He also loves sharing it with Luna too, but they sadly haven’t hit it off as well for a while. Matteo is hoping Gastón’s plan will work for the upcoming days.
Simón heads to their tables with a fresh batch of popcorn. “Wow, how exciting! It’s even more special since you get to enjoy it here at the Jam and Roller with us!” Simón states. Matteo grins but it slowly fades when he sees Luna walk into the cafeteria and completely ignoring him. “What happened?” Simón asks when he sees Matteo’s vivid expression abruptly change. “No nothing, I just wish I got to share this moment with another person too.” When Simón turns his head and sees who Matteo is staring at, he realizes what Matteo meant.
Nina pulls out her purse and hands her phone to Luna. “I know you’re trying to pretend you don’t care but you do. Watch the video, it’ll get rid of all your curiosities.” Luna shakes her head in disapproval. “Nina, the least I want to do is watch a music video of the one I love flirting with a girl who has a huge crush on him as well. They’re practically soulmates, meant for each other,” Luna exaggerates. “Oh c’mon, I know it’s complicated, but you know that’s not true. If you’re not going to do it for him, then do it for yourself. You deserve to see why he arrived late to your date.” Luna glares at Nina and decides to take the phone.
Once the music video is out, everyone begins to cheer for Matteo. Luna sits even more depressed seeing at the ‘amazing’ chemistry Matteo and Viviana had in the music video. She can’t help but doubt herself even more when all the comments from his fans say they ship him with Viviana. “Nina, I’m not feeling so good. I think I’ll just head home.” Nina nods and Luna begins to get up from her chair and head out. Matteo notices and follows her out.
“Luna! Luna, wait up! I need to tell you something,” Matteo yells out. “Matteo not now, I’m not in the mood. Congratulations of your video, it was very nice. I just don’t feel so good okay.” Matteo catches up to her and stands in front. “Look Luna, I don’t know if you’ll listen to me now but please go to tomorrow’s concert I’m having. My manager is having me make a concert to promote the single, but it wouldn’t be the same without you. Please Luna. You never miss any of my concerts,” Matteo begs. Luna gradually smiles. “Really? You still want me there?”
“Of course, I do Luna.” Luna now can’t help but blush. “Matteo, of course I’ll go. Even though I’m still a little upset at you calling me jealous, standing me up on our date, and not believing or listening to me, I still care. Since you want me there, I’ll be there.” Matteo is surprised by Luna’s comment and begins to graciously smile too. It was a moment for them, they hadn’t had one like this in a long time. It felt needed.
Nico is in the rink sitting on one of the chairs, he seems to be working on something since he has his notebook open with his pen. Jim enters and sees him alone. “Hey there, what are you working on?” Jim asks. “Oh just a few verses, I’m trying to get ahead on the Roller Band song for the competition, but nothing seems to come into mind,” Nico says. Jim heads to the seat beside him. She sits down and carefully glances over his blank page. “Oh yeah you do seem to be having some trouble,” Jim chuckles. “If you’d like I can help, I’m use to writing songs with Yam.” Nico turns and faces Jim, “Yes of course. I need all the help I can get; it’s been a while for me since I got to write a song with the Roller Band.” They both laugh together and get working on the song.
Jazmín dashes to Delfi holding a small slip of paper. “You won’t believe what just happened?” Delfi carefully places her books into her locker after seeing Jazmín rush to her. “Is it something new for the Fundom or for your blog, Ja Jazmin?” Delfi predicts. “Nope, you’re very far off. Look at this,” Jazmín hands Delfi the note. The more she reads it, the more her eyes grow like a flower blooming in the season, keeps opening. She’s in plain shock as Jazmín nods from her amusement. “Right! I have a secret admirer!! I have to post about this on my blog!” Jazmín frantically grabs her phone from her pocket but right when she’s about to film, Delfi stops her. “No Jazmín, this is something special. Honestly, I think this is something you should keep for yourself, every celebrity likes to keep their personal life separate from their work life,” Delfi advises. Jazmín thinks for a second and says, “Nahhh I’ll still post it, plus this can even help us discover who the anonymous writer is!”
The Restaurant
Yam is wearing her golden shimmery dress that Jim helped her pick out. She’s very anxious about her date with Ramiro, she wants it to go out perfect since this was something she had been dreaming of for a while. He puts down the menu and slips his hand under hers to her surprise. He gives her a shy smile. “I had been dreaming of this for a while. Before, I would always try to move on, but I just couldn’t. My mind just couldn’t forget about you,” Ramiro admits. Yam begins to tear up. “I felt the same way for so long but never said anything worried you didn’t feel the same way. I’m so happy about this moment. I don’t care how long I had to wait, it was totally worth it.”
Throughout the whole night, Yam and Ramiro shared college stories and even old memories of each other. How Yam never stopped writing songs about him and how Ramiro would skate imagining about her. Everything went smooth till dessert came. A random man with a suit and tie approached their table and faces Yam. “You look familiar, are you Yamila Sanchez from that Ja Jazmin blog?” Yam stays startled and stutters, “uhhh yes why?” The man quickly pulls a card out of his pocket. “Hillside Records, I’m the owner. I would like to set up a meeting with you for a chance at a record deal.” Yam immediately glares at Ramiro for a response. He shows his approval and gestures for Yam to respond. “Yes I would love to!” Yam exclaims. “Great! I’m available tomorrow at 5 pm. There is one important detail I have to tell you,” the man says. “Yes, what is it,” Yam asks. “The record company is not in Buenos Aires. It’s in California.” He proceeds to hand her the card. “Think about it, I’ll see you tomorrow.” He leaves and Yam shows her disappointment to Ramiro, she couldn’t believe how such an exciting offer can turn to something so depressing. If she took this offer, that means she would have to leave her family, her friends, and her chance at being with Ramiro.
“Look I know this is hard to think about but just follow your heart. If this is something you truly want go for it, I can wait longer,” Ramiro grabs her hand and holds it. “I don’t know what to say. I never knew me pursuing a music career would mean I have to leave everything and everyone I love,” Yam gradually lets her tears fall onto her glittery dress.

An akuma with reality powers, The Artist Family and the canon Art kids (maybe the other classmates too) meet each other
Their reaction? Chaos?
Another day, another Akuma for the Malevolent Miraculous team
This one is named Alterna, and they’re a scientist who got Akumatized because their alternate universe theory was rejected
They have the power to open portals to other dimensions
While fighting, Alterna grabbed Black Widower’s whip and used it to ensnare the team before flinging them into a portal
Once they land, they find themselves... In Paris? Only, something feels off, very off...
Since there doesn’t seem to be any danger, they detransform
They look around while getting weird looks from people. (Imagine the ‘Going into town’ scene form the Addams Family 2019 movie)
Nathaniel Artist: Everyone’s dressed so... Conformist. *Sees a magazine with Adrien on the cover* And what happened to Adrien’s new look?
Rose Artist: Is this one of the universes where his dad is a jerk?
Alix Artist scares off a few people by throwing a brick through a few car windows.
Marc Artist: Alix, don’t be rude. Let the others have their turns.
Manon approaches Marinette Artist and asks why she’s wearing dark colors
Marinette Artist: Manon, you know I despise all colors.
A few more minutes of walking, and they see Marinette Dupain-Cheng running to school
Marinette Artist: *Checks her watch* School has begun three minutes ago. She’s not very punctual, is she?
The Artist Family follow her to the alternate DuPont to see what’s going on, then they bump into Mme. Bustier, who was making her way to the teachers lounge.
Mme. Bustier: Marinette? But I just... I saw you, all of you in the classroom. And Marc, shouldn’t you also be in class?
The Artists rush to their respective classrooms and find their alternate sleeves, much to their shock
Nathaniel Kurtzberg: ... What the fuck?!
Nathaniel Artist: I could ask the same about your outfit. Must you insult my eyes with such a color combination?
Chloé: Ha! You just got burned by yourself, tomato head!
Marinette Artist: At least he doesn’t go out looking like a clown gave him a makeover.
Chloé: I’m telling daddy!
Marinette Artist: Yes, let your father get involved with petty teenage drama. That will get him more votes in the upcoming election. Now silence.
Marinette Dupain-Cheng: ... Thank you, me?
They explain what happened, (Leaving out the part about them being superheroes because this universe’s Lila will no doubt run her big mouth to Hawkmoth who they’re sure she’s working for), and the art club is not sure how to react
Alix Kudbel: So we’re basically the Addams Family?
Lila: Oh! You know, my great great grandfather actually inspired Chauncey Addams to create the Addams Family!
While the class eats it up, the art club and Artists just glare at her
Marinette Addams: It’s Charles Addams, idiot.
Lila: Oh, you guys hate me too? *Cue bitch crying*
Juleka Artist: *Waves a skull in front of Lila* Luxor, nexor, burst and burn!
Lila: What’s she doing?
Juleka Artist: Just a curse that will make your pants burst into flames every time you lie.
Lili: *Whining* Why are you all trying to hurt me?! I never lie! *Her pants bursts into flames and she runs out of the school before she’s left in only her underwear*
Alya: *To her Marinette* My sincerest apologies.
Suddenly, screams are heard, followed by Mme. Mendelive and her students running past the classroom. Marc Anciel and Artist walk into the classroom while being trailed by a clutter of spiders
Marc Artist: Well that was quite rude, wouldn’t you say?
Marc Anciel: In their defense, spiders are a little... Horripilante.
Nathaniel Artist just stands there, trying very hard not to kiss the alternate version of his boyfriend and wondering why his alternate self isn’t going kissing his Marc madly with passion
The Artists explain to the Art Club during lunch about their situation and tell them that they’re Miraculous holders in their world, much to Marinette’s shock since she’s never heard of the Malevolent Miraculous
The art club let their alternate selves stay with them until they can figure out a way to get back, but Nathaniel and Marc Artist insist that they stay together
Alix Kudbel and Artist volunteer to let them stay with them. (Cuz they ship ‘em!)
Marinette A is stunned to see her alternate parents, and when they welcome her with open arms since her own parents were always so distant.
Even when she shows her dark nature, they still treat her like family. She tries very hard not to show any emotion
When they’re alone, Tikki and Screech reveal themselves. Tikki explains that there are alternate realities with different Kwamis with similar powers to the Kwamis they’ve alternate versions of. Screech is her alternate self
Marinette A questions why Marinette DC’s Ladybug suit is so skintight and insists that she change her suit which Marinette DC doesn’t mind doing
Marinette A tells Marinette DC about her boyfriend, Damian, confusing DC a bit. What about Adrien?
Marinette A: Adrien wasn’t able to satisfy my needs. Yes, he’s quite attractive, but I needed someone who could keep up with me, worship me, be my love servant and follow me into the underworld.
Marinette DC: ... So who’s this Damian?
Nathaniel K insists that Nathaniel A spend some time away from his Marc so they can talk without them making out every five minutes
Nathaniel A: How is it that you have not gouged out your own eyes?! Your Marc is miles away from you, and you believe you have the right to live?!
Nathaniel K: ... We call each other.
Nathaniel K is starting to regret letting his alternate self live with him since he keeps starting fires! He had to hide all of the matches and anything flammable. And if that’s not bad, Chompp keep chewing on his sketchbooks
Once all of the fire causes were hidden, they bonded over their love for painting and sketching
Nathaniel K: So, your paintings are actually cursed?
Nathaniel A: Very much. One caused the mayor to stumble down the stairs and stay in intensive care.
Nathaniel K: *Thinking of all the ways he could torture Chloé and Lila with his art* ... Teach me.
Marc Anciel is trying not to scream every time one of Marc Artist’s spiders crawl on him, not wanting to seem rude
Marc Anciel: *Shudders* Oh, and that’s a black widow in my hair.
Marc Artist: They’re my favorite. It’s why I chose the name Black Widower.
To release some of the tension, Marc Anciel suggests they read each other’s writing... He will not be sleeping for a while after reading Marc’s Artist’s stories. He asks why his alternate self wrote eulogies for his Nathaniel
Marc Artist: I want others to know of the love we shared together before he’s put to rest. And who better to write my love’s eulogy than the one who knows him best? The one who has loved him, tangoed with him, stabbed his heart.
Marc Andiel ignores the last part and actually considers writing Nathaniel’s eulogy.
Alix K and Alix A are having an awesome time together
Alix A and Duuo throw grenades which Alix K dodges while skating until Alim tells them to do this away from the museum
They outrun the police, prank Kim by putting itching powder in the pool, and watch their Marcs and Nathaniels make out
It’s all fun and well until Alix A meets this universe’ Jalil. Her Jalil sold her out since there was a reward to turn her in, forcing her to run from the authorities and she’s never forgiven him
Jalil K assures her that he’d never do that and reminds her that family always comes first. Alix A is resisting the urge to cry and instead lights a firecracker in his jacket
Juleka A CANNOT stop staring at her alternate self’s Luka. She can actually see his face and body. And he can talk!
Luka: Hey, are Marinette and I a... Thing where you’re from?
Juleka A: She has two hands. Soon to be three when she takes Damian’s in marriage when they’re of age.
Juleka C and A bond over their love for the macabre and witch culture. She even teaches her a few spells to use against Chloé and Lila if she ever shows her face again
They work! Chloé broke out into a terrible rash, and all of Lila’s pants are on fire
Rabbid also may or may not have chewed up the rest of Lila’s clothes, forcing her to spend all of her money on new clothes
Rose A tries to get used to her alternate self’s love of bright colors and Disney movies, but it’s a struggle. So, she exposes her to the darker side of Disney.
Rose L is horrified but also a little excited.
They do a dark Disney marathon and watch all of the movies Disney tried to hide from audiences.
Rose A even changes up Rose L’s look so she looks like a badass punk Princess, which gives Juleka C a slight nosebleed
Rose L is still her bubbly self, but now also has a love for the darker things in life
The Artists stay in this universe for three more days, starting another goth trend in the alternate Paris by giving Adrien a makeover, introducing Marinette to Damian via pen pal program, teaching Nathaniel and Juleka how to curse their enemies, setting Lila’s clothes on fire a couple more times, introducing Marc to a more gothic style of or writing & Rose to a punk style of clothing, and teaching Alix all of the stunts she’s never even thought of doing that involve explosives
They also have a little fun with Nino and help him pursue his dream of traumatizing Gabriel Agreste
This involves chloroform, a coffin, and a walkee talkee. Gabriel is forced to listen to Nino’s voice for 12 whole hours, telling him to be a better dad to Adrien, fire Lila, and to give him $1000 dollars
Gabriel gives Adrien more freedom, fires Lila and burns all of the magazines with her face and name in them, and gives Nino $1000 dollars. Then he passes out
Nino: *Hugging the Artists* I... I love you guys so much. I don’t ever want you to leave. You have made me the happiest man alive!
Then Alterna shows up
Nino: NO! DON’T TAKE THEM! TAKE GABRIEL!
Adrien: Hey!
Nino: I’m just kidding... Not.
The Artists and Marinette transform. The Malevolent Miraculous team are shocked to see Chat Noir but are even more shocked when they immediately recognize him as Adrien
They’re able to defeat the Akuma even though Lila (Who’s being a brat because she got fired) keeps interfering by whining about her broken leg, this time in a skirt. (Loophole) And she keeps trying to snatch their Miraculous whenever she gets close to them
Jaws: *Uses power to make his teeth sharper* Keep crying and I’ll give you a real broken leg. *Lila shuts up and lets them work*
They defeat Alterna, and Ladybug and Nocturna use the Miracle/Malevolent cure to remove all of the portals opened by the Akuma and put people back in their respective dimensions
They start to disappear and head back to their dimension as the Bats and Ladybugs swarm around them
Nino: NO! TAKE ME WITH YOU! *They disappear* DAMNIT!
Alya: You have them. *Points to the Art Club*
Nino: Can they murder Gabriel or frame him for a crime?
Juleka: We can try. There’s six of us, one of him. Nathaniel and I now know how to curse people.
Nino: I’m in!
Alya: And while you go ruin Gabriel’s life, I’m gonna go kill Lila.
Back in the Artist’s Dimension!
Juleka Artist: Are we back? Is this our dimension?
Nino: Oh, thank God you’re back! Gabriel was starting to gain consciousness again and Adrien is becoming suspicious. I think he knows I’m keeping him in my basement.
Marinette Artist: *Sighs* Yep. This is our place.

Toepick!
Bucky Barnes x female reader AU
Summary: Bucky’s a hockey player turned pairs figure skater partner for reader who’s kind of a pain in the ass. (aka this is a Cutting Edge AU if anyone’s seen the movie)
Chapter warnings: Cursing, mentions of hockey violence, reader is a brat, Bucky is a sarcastic asshole (just like in the show!)
Author note: Unbetaed chapter, I don’t have a taglist for Bucky fics but send me a DM or ask if you want to be added to it I’ll make a taglist for my Bucky fics! Please reblog this and tell me what you think in my askbox!
Also thanks to @pisss-offf-ghostt for her hockey insight b/c I don’t know shit about hockey.
Chapter One
Bucky Barnes sat in a doctor’s office, two weeks after taking a puck to the face in a Winter Olympic game. It had hit him way too close to his eye and Coach Pierce had benched him the rest of the Games.
What’s worse is that it was his own fucking teammate who’d given him the injury. Brock Rumlow, their Enforcer, had always had it out for Bucky. God knows why, but maybe Rumlow had never forgiven his NHL team for beating theirs in the playoffs the year before. Or that Bucky had scored the winning goal of that same game.
Steve and Sam had always said Rumlow was a bad apple in the NHL and his Olympic spirit sucked too it seemed. So now, he was waiting on news from the doctor, telling him when he could start training for the next NHL season.
The doctor entered the room with Bucky’s file. “Well, doc? When can I get back on the ice?” He asked.
The doctor frowned at him and put his x-ray up on the lighted board to show him. “Son, I’m afraid you won’t be able to play hockey anymore.” He told him frankly. “You took quite a hit to your occipital bone and it hindered 80% of your peripheral vision in your right eye.”
“What?” He asked, unsure if he heard him right.
“I’m afraid you’ll have to go into retirement from hockey.” He told him, looking at the man with sympathetic eyes. He was a great player, had a lot of years left in him. He had watched that game, this wasn’t his fault.
Bucky sat there, shell shocked for several moments before slowly rising and putting his coat on. “Thanks doc.” He muttered before finally leaving the office and building. Fucking Brock Rumlow. He had seen the smirk on his lips after he’d opened his eyes from taking the hit to his face.
He pulled out his phone and dialed Steve’s number. “Hey, meet me at the usual place?”
“Everything okay Buck?” He’d asked his childhood best friend and now teammate.
“Just… I’ll tell you at the bar.” He growled out and then made his way to their favorite haunt. “Call Sam. I have news.”
Thirty minutes later, Bucky was nursing a beer at their favorite New York bar. Sam and Steve stared at him, shocked. “So what, now you have to retire? That’s bullshit man.” Sam shook his head.
“You think I don’t know that?” Bucky growled at his teammate. “My publicist wants to make an announcement soon.” He told them. “But I told her to hold off. I want some time to just… Absorb this.” He ran his hand through his hair frustratingly.
Bucky loved skating, how could he give it up? And Brock Rumlow gets to just keep playing? What a load of bullshit.
“Rumlow should be fined for that shit he pulled on you at the Games.” Steve shook his head.
“You really think being fined is what he deserves? Everyone knows it was a dirty move but Pierce is his coach in the NHL, he’s not gonna do shit about it.” Sam reminded Steve.
It was true, even the announcers had called it a dirty shot, and everyone who followed the NHL knew that Brock Rumlow had it out for Bucky Barnes. But Rumlow was Pierce’s guy and he wasn’t going to do anything to his player to jeopardize the next season of the NHL.
“Speak of the devil.” Sam whistled out and Bucky looked over his shoulder to see Rumlow entering the bar with his flavor of the month on his arm. Some up and coming model or something. Not that any of them kept track anymore of them.
“Hey boys! How’s the post-Olympics life treating you? As good as me?” He winked at his newest companion. “She’s a model.”
“Shocking.” Sam snorted from behind his beer. Smirking when Rumlow shot him a dirty look.
“So Barnes, how’s the eye?” Rumlow asked him casually, as if he hadn’t given him the very injury that now forced Bucky into early retirement.
Bucky’s grip tightened on his bottle. “It’s fine.” He ground out and gave him a hardened stare. It was true, physically he felt fine. But, he was about two seconds away from beating Rumlow to a pulp though. Hell, Steve and Sam would probably help him if he asked. But he also didn’t want any added press than the impending ‘early retirement’ announcement in the coming days.
“Look man, sorry about that. Guess the puck just got away from my stick, you know?” He said easily.
Holy shit, he was really just going to pretend it wasn’t his fault? Guess he shouldn’t be surprised.
“Yeah, you seemed real torn up about it.” Steve snapped at him. “The whole hockey world knows you have it out for Buck.” All four men, stood. All imposing figures as hockey players. “And everyone knows that was a dirty shot you took. The Olympics are supposed to be about coming together but you just used it for your own personal gain. You’re a disgrace.” Steve told him.
“You letting your pals stand up for you Barnes? What’s the matter? Too chicken shit to say anything yourself?” Rumlow taunted him.
Bucky stepped closer to him, almost chest to chest with the Enforcer. “Nope, I just know you’re not worth my time. You never have been, not even on the ice.” After several tense moments, Bucky finally stepped back. “I gotta go. I have a call to make. I’ll talk to you two later.” He looked at Sam and Steve before leaving some bills on the table for his beers and he purposely bumped into Rumlow before leaving the bar.
Once he was safely in his Brooklyn apartment, he called his publicist. “Mel? Hey, let’s just…. Make an announcement. Tomorrow. Just get it over with.” He told her. “There’s no point in delaying it.”
“Sure thing, we’ll just say you’re mulling over your post-hockey playing options. Maybe take a year off and figure out what you want. Book deals, coaching job, hell even a sports commentator.”
“Yeah. I’ll think about it, Mel. Thanks.” He hung up and tossed his phone on the counter and sighed.
Fucking Brock Rumlow.

“What part of locked arms don’t you fucking get?” You snapped at your latest partner ‘audition’ as you got up off your ass from being dropped again. “Where in the hell are you finding these idiots Maria?” You snapped at your coach as you skated away from the latest guy. “You’d think none of them knew a simple lift.”
Maria Hill, your coach for several years now was at the end of her rope. You’d rejected partner after partner for the past month and a half after you’d parted ways with your Olympic partner, from a disastrous showing at the Winter Olympics.
“Probably doesn’t help that you berate them before they even get their skates on.” She called from the side of the rink as Tony Stark, your guardian since you were fifteen years old (although you were in your twenties now and didn’t need a guardian anymore) and practically your big brother, entered with his five year old daughter Morgan in his arms.
“How’s it going?” He asked.
“You’re insane.” Your latest pairs auditioner told you as he hastily removed his skates and shoved his feet in his sneakers and grabbed his bag. “Good luck finding someone willing to put up with the ice princess.” He snorted and left.
“That good huh?” Tony asked with a sigh and watched you skate around the private ice rink on their property.
“I can’t help that they’re all idiots.” You told him and Maria sighed, rubbing her temples as Morgan giggled at your comment.
“You know, unless you work with any of these guys and Maria. You’re going to have to go to singles skating.” Tony warned you, knowing you hated singles skating. It always felt too lonely for you out on the ice alone. You had trust issues since you were a kid. Which was a double edged sword because you also had trouble trusting partners to not let you down.
“Alright, let’s just call it for the day. I have some calls to make for some more options.” Maria told you as you continued to skate. She turned to Tony. “Talk some sense into her. I don’t have many options left.” She muttered and then left.
Morgan sat at the edge of the rink putting her skates on to get ready for her private lesson. “Ice Princess, come on… Work with me.” Tony called to you.
You shot him a glare at the nickname but skated over to him, stopping promptly and showering his legs with ice. “Yes?” You asked him innocently.
“Don’t give me that shit. What’s your deal? You’ve rejected nearly eight perfectly good skaters in the past almost two months. And always over stupid shit.” He told you. “They’re either not strong enough, not fast enough, not graceful enough. None of which have been true.”
You wanted to curse back at him but knew Morgan was beginning to repeat everything and Tony was being hushed and you really didn’t want to hear Pepper ask why Morgan learned a new curse word from you. “I’m just particular, that’s all.” You defended yourself.
“Is that the word we’re using?” He snorted at you. “I know you have trust issues because of what happened. But you can’t keep using that excuse for skating. Not all those men are going to let you down. But they will if they pick up on your attitude and tension. You need to start giving some of them an actual chance.” He glanced over at Morgan who was starting to warm up on the ice before her lesson. “Just… Think about it, okay? And you’ll bring Morgan to the house after her lesson?”
You sighed and nodded at him. “Yeah okay, fine. I’ll think about it. And yes, I’ll stay here during her lesson.” You promised as you got off the ice and changed shoes while Morgan started her lesson.
“Thank you. Dinner’s at six.” He reminded you and kissed Morgan goodbye before leaving for a meeting.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Maria Hill was looking over all the options she had on her desk. None of them would be able to take any of the shit that you were dishing out. She needed someone who could dish it right back to you and who could skate. “Jesus this is a nightmare.” She muttered to herself.
“Might have a suggestion for you if you’re interested in hearing it and going to meet with him.” Nick Fury’s voice came from her office door. Nick was the trainer for you. Responsible for keeping you in shape and healthy.
“Yeah?” She asked him curiously and leaned back in her chair.
Nick walked over to the television and turned it on, turning it to the sports network talking about Bucky Barnes’ retirement and what his options were now. The news had been out for a week now and everyone was speculating what he was going to do now.
“Barnes? You expect me to get a hockey player to be her new partner and not have her throw another fit?” She asked incredulously.
“Hear me out Hill.” Fury told her and sat across from her. “He’s strong, a phenomenal skater. Actually graceful even in hockey. And, he won’t take any of her shit lying down. Everything else, you can teach him.” He mused with a shrug. “Besides, rumor has it that he wants to keep skating. Sure, this ain’t hockey but it’s better than nothing.”
Nick had made several good points. He was a great skater. And he was disciplined. It meant that he would stick to any regime of training and skating they threw at him.
“She won’t like this.” She told him bluntly.
“Does she like anything anyway?” He countered with a snort.
He had a point. You hadn’t liked any of the partners they’d brought you till now. So throwing Barnes into the mix wasn’t going to make it much worse.
“Fine. Let’s go talk to him.” She relented.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“You want me to what?” Bucky asked Maria and Nick. The two of them sat across from him in his Brooklyn apartment. Staring at them incredulously.
“We heard you wanted to keep skating. And while this isn’t hockey, we’re training someone who wants Olympic gold just as much as you do.” Maria told him. “I’ve seen you skate. You’re talented as hell and strong.”
Bucky looked back and forth between the two of them, expecting this to be some kind of joke. “What’s the catch?”
“No catch. You’ll be paid, there’s a guest house at the Stark estate for you if the audition goes well. So you can live and train and not have to commute. You’ll be well paid.” Nick told him as he casually leaned back in his seat.
Bucky snorted. “I’ve been doing this long enough to know that there’s always a catch.”
Maria and Nick exchanged looks before looking back at him. “She can be… Difficult to get along with.” She told him carefully.
“So she’s a pain in the ass.” He clarified flatly and snorted again. “Wouldn’t be the first time I’ve had a pain in the ass on my team.” He muttered to himself.
“So you’ll come try out?” Maria asked him curiously. “Look, I know you don’t take any shit from anyone. So you and her might work because you can dish it out. You won’t put up with her attitude.” She explained.
Bucky considered his options. He didn’t want to stop skating. And it’s not like there were any open coaching positions currently. And he sure as shit didn’t want to write a memoir or work for ESPN while all his buddies were still skating. This was something for him. Plus he’d get to work with some hot girl instead of staring at Rumlow’s ugly face everywhere he went.
“When’s the tryout?” He finally asked.

Chapter 3: Afternoon Feather
Narrated by Loen.
~Content Warning: mention of death and loneliness~
Narrator: After handing over Mok to his sister, I got a new commission in Lodden.
Narrator: I haven’t been in Lodden for long. There were many people on the streets, busy hurrying past the traffic lights.
Narrator: Compared to them, my client seemed something special.
Narrator: Afternoon, letters, books, white quill pens... Even time moved slower in this small room.
Narrator: I opened the door and went in, not knowing where to go for a moment.
Narrator: The boy sitting inside seemed to be startled.
Loen: Is it you who sent me a private message? Um... WinterWind?
Client: Well... Yes. I have a commission that I’d like to give to you...
Loen: Why do you need me? Let’s talk about it in detail.
Client: ...Please deliver a letter for me to my best friend.
Narrator: He answered in a low voice, without looking up at me, nervously holding the quill in his hand.
Loen: Why do I have to deliver it?
Client: ...I’d like you to confirm his physical condition for me.
Client: The letters have been punctual every month recently... He said funny things as usual, but I felt that something was wrong.
Client: There was a war in North Kingdom earlier this winter, but he didn’t mention it in his letter.
Narrator: I moved a small bench, sat next to him, and asked him in a low voice.
Loen: Haven’t you seen him?
Client: No... We’ve never met before...
Loen: Did you say he was your best friend?
Client: Yes... I’m not very good at making friends... I can only stay at home alone.
Client: He’s my pen pal. We hear from each other every month.
Client: He encouraged me a lot...
Client: I have some friends on the Internet now. It’s all thanks to him that...
Loen: Doesn’t he use the Internet?
Narrator: The client shook his head.
Client: He lives in a very remote place, and he doesn’t know how to use these things...
Client: I haven’t been out of the house for a long time, and...
Loen: Are you afraid to see him?
Client: I’ve imagined what he looked like. He must be kind.
Client: But I’d be nervous if I saw him... What if he gets disappointed and stops writing to me?
Client: So please help me! Send him my letter and see if he’s alright.
Narrator: As he said this, he gave me the letter and the quill he had carried with him for many years, squeezing my hand tightly.
Narrator: It was as if he suddenly realized something. He pulled back his hand, and put it awkwardly in his lap.
Client: Please.
Narrator: I put away his letter.
Loen: I see. Leave it to me.
Narrator: I didn’t stay in Lodden for too long, so I set off for the North.
Narrator: Mountains bordering Apple and North had magnificent sunrises, long winter days, kids ice-skating on a frozen lake.
Narrator: I’d also like to show it to you if I get the chance.
You: It must be cold there, no?
Narrator: The wine in the North can keep you warm. You’ll like it.
Narrator: Therefore, taverns are a favorite spot for mercenaries. They can have a drink when they’re tired or want to celebrate.
Narrator: Fermented rice cakes are sweet and might better suit your taste, right?
Choose either “I want a drink, too” or “I don’t drink.”
If “drink,” ...
You: It makes me want to have a few drinks.
Narrator: Deal! You should have a few more drinks when we go together.
If “don’t,” ...
You: Even if you can’t drink, you can also enjoy the good atmosphere.
Narrator: It doesn’t matter if you don’t drink. Mercenaries have many stories. Buy them drinks and they are willing to tell you.
--
Narrator: It was a sunny afternoon when I found the address on the letter.
Narrator: The night in North Kingdom was long and it was warm in the afternoon. The cottage seemed deserted and nobody answered the door.
Narrator: Where did the client’s letters go, and where did the letters he received come from?
Narrator: I found the post office of this small town.
Postman: The man who lived there was an old mercenary. He died six months ago.
Loen: He died?
Postman: Yeah. He gave me a hundred letters and a lot of money before he died.
Postman: He asked me to send one to an address every month.
Narrator: It slowly dawned on me.
Loen: Is this the address?
Postman: Lodden...! Yes! He said that his best friend lived there and asked me to send letters on time or his friend would be lonely.
Narrator: The postman handed me a picture.
Postman: Surprising, huh? He looked ferocious. With such a scar on his face, no one dared to approach him, let alone marry him.
Postman: No relatives, no kids... To be honest, I was surprised to know that he had a friend far away.
Loen: I didn’t expect this.
Narrator: I thought of the client who was fragile. If the old mercenary was still alive, I’m afraid he could pick him up with one hand.
Narrator: What are you laughing at?
Loen: Never mind. I want to send a letter, may I?
Narrator: I wrote a letter at the post office, sent it to my client, and put a maple leaf in the envelope.
Narrator: I told him that everything was alright and his friend was very happy to hear from him.
Narrator: When I left the post office, the winter sun was warm in the cold North wind.
Narrator: I left my client’s quill in front of the old mercenary’s grave, the soft feathers quivering gently in the afternoon breeze.

Title: Bryan360’s OC Trio - Ziggy, Bearo & Beara
Hello! Here's my first "Secret Art Trade" for my A-Pal @bryan360 this 2022.
• And of course, the first trio row of his OC's this year. So, here are his three OCs that my A-Pal asked for:
• Ziggy 🦨: A cool skunk who loves hip-hop music & dance, particularly break dancing in the streets without sweat around him, or "skunk-sweat". (So, don't try to near him... No offense, Zig.) And with his pal Mikey, they can bring out the most unique music & dance at the same time, like no other.
• Bearo 🐻🛼: Bearo is the big brother of Beara, with his interests on honey treats (all kinds), reading comics, toy models & kits, and finally skating with his young sister with his roller skates. Hey, I bet they can race or have fun at the roller rink (80's style). That could be fun.
• Beara 🐻🍭: The young sister of Bearo, Beara is always beside him when she tries to help his homework, and then gave him a "honey treats" (or any kind of candy). She's a candy lover, who loves... Well all kinds of candy; Toffee, Chocolate Bars, etc... But her favorite of the bunch is "Lollipop". And with a help of Math & Science (as her favorite school subjects), she can do experiment candies to create a different kind of sweet buds, that will suit her tastes (and then she can share to her friends, not just her brother). And yes, she can skate too like her brother. Bearo & Beara's roller skates was handcrafted by their father, who I assuming that he's running & working at his roller skate store.
Do you think that he also has own roller rink inside? Well, go ask him (I suppose). I bet the Speedsters family would invite the roller rink/store. Just saying.
Well, that’s all for now.🙂 If you haven’t seen my previous revamp digital artworks from this year, then I’ll provide some links down below.↓😉
Previous [Bryan360’s OC Trio]:

You need to back up your ON break up theory with more than just fake subs and vague statements about 'claiming behavior'.
During the period you allege they were broken up, Jimin pulled Jungkook in a hug on run behind, Jungkook called Jimin sexy at a press conference, Jimin and jungkook did that whole 'how does it feel to be in the same unit'/'time to change' flirty thing, Jimin grabbed Jungkook by the lapels... and more. Begging pardon but if they were grieving the loss of their romantic relationship while trying to be professional colleagues and pals.... isnt that sort of insensitive? Like I know you admitting you might have read it wrong and have changed your view in light of new footage might be a blow to your ego, but I don't think you are thinking rationally when you insist on this break up theory. It's sad because I found so much meaning and connection in some of the stuff you have written, particularly pertaining to internalized homophobia, racism, mysogynoir and bts changing over time to become more enlightened, but your devotion to this ONE theory, and defensiveness whenever it is (rightly imo) challenged makes me wary of your theories in general, which might be extremely unfair to you, as a thinker. Your log is really funny and great in a lot of ways so i cant really quit you.
Ahhhh it's been a while I got one of these...
Hello, how you doing! Lol. Silver is that you?
Chilee, it's the name calling for me.
Ego, irrational, charlatan, Tuktukker- I'm desensitized to such ad hominems at this point. You don't throw words like these around and expect me to sit at the table and talk. Imma yeet myself out real fast. Lol.
There's just something different, wholesome almost, about this post though. Sounds constructive I think. Or maybe it's because I just woke. Chilee. Lol.
It doesn't feel at all like you are attacking me. It's strange...
You're gaslighting though but it's fine. I've built a resistance to that from years and years of dealing with my abductors or family. Potato potahto.
I often put my sanity before other's insanity which is why I don't indulge posts such as these and I'm not sorry about that. I mean is this an Ask or Submission? I don't- what am I supposed to say? What is the call to action?
Sigh.
If I come across as defensive sometimes, 10 out of 10, it's probably because the person on the other end is being offensive. Straight up. Cause and effect, the science don't lie.
You don't expect me to not defend when I'm being attacked. That's just tacky.
I don't think there's anything wrong with challenging views and notions because at the very least, that's about the exchange of ideas and I welcome it.
I set the limits at the racial slurs, the mocking tones, the emotionally charged rants meant to disparage me and my entire ancestry rather than argue a point, the interference with my personal life and business all because I hold a different view on a topic, the doxing, gaslighting, the bad mouthing, spreading lies about me, turning my friends against me, stripping away my rights and copyrights, harassing people who enjoy my work among- other things.
I usually exercise my right to self preservation in these instances- imma block, delete, ignore, forward or clap back. Word. Lol.
I'm sorry, but if you have to attack the individuality of a person to argue your point, you've lost the argument and you never had one to begin with.
Take for instance, the bit you wrote about me taking a blow to 'my ego' - do you see the problem with that?
What has holding a view different from yours on a particular subject got to do with the ego?
Do you mean to say the only way I can hold an opinion different from yours on a matter is if I were hubristic?
Are you projecting? What's happening? Lol
And if I call you out for this, I'm defensive? Way to add gaslighting to your bigotry and intolerance of opinions that don't align with yours. No offense.
I give myself permission to hold unpopular views. I give myself permission to think differently from others. I give myself permission to see what I see and believe what I believe and form an opinion on what I see and believe divorced from others' views and based on my own understanding of the workings of this world or in this case Jikook.
No amount of name calling will change this fact. We see things from different perspectives after all.
You need to back your ON break up theory with more than just fake subs and vague claims about claiming behavior.
Lol. Fake subs? You mean the Hajima bit from the On comeback special I put in my video? Interesting.
I think I see what you mean about my break up theory and I agree to some extent. Like, come up here with charts and paragraphs and excel spreadsheets on why I think Jikook were broken up?
I would be happy to do that kind of analysis.
I think the problem for me here is, I feel tasked to convince rather than to share my opinion on the matter or even expand on my theories for discourse sakes and that makes me really uncomfortable.
Not to psychoanalyze you, but I feel when you ask this of me you are not just asking me to divulge my thoughts on a topic but to disabuse you of your own biases surrounding the topic.
I don't think this is about my opinion at all. I think it's about your own beliefs about Jikook. And there's nothing wrong with that. If you believe in something you need to stand for it. Just don't mind if others do same and don't call them names for doing so. Because if you do mind, then that's bigotry.
The fact is my opinion contradicts your beliefs about Jikook and you either want to punish me for it hence the slurs, are in denial, or you want to believe my point of view- can't really tell.
I think there is a limit in general to how far I can prove Jikook in anyway and that has nothing to do with lack of evidence, my ego or my rationality. And yes, I often shroud my beliefs in vague expressions because I don't want to set myself up or open myself up to legal suits. I can only prove Jikook to a point and nothing beyond my belief. Beyond that, I would be skating on thin ice and making bighit a tad richer.
During the period you allege they were broken up, Jimin pulled JK in a hug, grabbed Jungkook by his lapel, JK called Jimin sexy, they did the flirty challenge...
So if I understand you correctly, all these is what makes Jikook a couple to you and indicate they are dating?
Alright then.
Hobi calls Jimin sexy all the time. BTS calls eachother sexy all the time. I don't think that's a sign they are in a polyamory.
Jungkook plays with his hyungs' dick and ass and talks about falling for them most times. I don't think that makes him gay or in a relationship with any of them.
Lemme just cut to the chase. I've reached my photo limits. I have said a countless times now, that I don't view skinship and all these interactions you've pointed out as indication two people are dating- especially not two Koreans working within the homoerotically charged space of Kpop.
And I have given out a few of the metrics I use in considering whether any ship in BTS is real over the course of my blogs- intimacy, exclusive behaviors such as and not limited to claiming eachother and exercising certain rights and authorities over eachother and against the group, stress trails as a result of keeping their relationship a secret, the microaggressions, breaching the fourth wall and others.
I think what this comes down to is differences in perspectives on a fundamental level. Not egos.
I don't see the things you see as the signs Jikook are real and dating, as signs Jikook are real and dating. If I did, I would be seeing every ship in BTS as real but I don't.
And you consider the metrics I use in ascertaining Jikook as vague something something. I think we are at an impasse.
But explain the bit about 'insensitive' to me please. I would love to engage in that discourse. Why would it be insensitive for two exes to act cordially with eachother within a workplace in the aftermath of a breakup?
Then the bit about grieving...
So grieving is one of your metrics for accessing whether or not two people are broken up?
That's interesting. I mean I don't disagree but I also don't think Jikook are gonna come to work with oversized pajamas, dark shades, boxes of tissues and a blanket slung over their shoulders because of a broken heart... it's 2020 not Manila. They've grown, are learning and getting better at dealing with their emotions on camera because, as Suga pointed out, they are aware the least bit of tension translates to the screens.
I mean Jimin said it himself in his 2020 interview, he's learned to react less intensely to certain things. And sometimes, he tries to downplay certain things. He tries to perform Jikook when Jikook are not in a great place. It's only in recent times, On era, where JK has opted out and not gone along with it.
I think he does that and uses their shared 'Jikook agenda' and performances of Jikook as a means to fix things or break the ice between them at least.
But clearly Jk wasn't having it that day as he kept putting up boundaries with Jimin throughout that Run episode- unless of course you are disputing this as well on the grounds Jimin dragged his ass into a hug. Chilee.
I think most people wouldn't have felt there was something off with Jikook in that On period at all had it not been for Run 116. It's similar to how, had it not been for Jimin's birthday saga, the Esquire shoot behind scenes and Grammy reaction video, no one would have felt there was something going on between Jikook in the October timeline.
I think we would have seen and felt the less interactions and professionalism between them in the aftermath of it but for the most parts, moments like the couch scene in the Grammy reaction video wouldn't have made sense to any of us especially as we had just witnessed JK in the ON:E concert rushing to comfort and console JM when he was tearing up at the end of the concert.
At least when he pushed JM into a ditch somewhere in the dark in Soop we know he had been drinking and they were playing competitive sports. Even with that he still showed some concern when Jimin fell and injured himself afterwards.
I think we would all be wondering if Jikook were fanservice at that point, a fanservice relationship where JK only consoled Jimin when he cried infront of thousands of people at concerts and nibbled his ear while he was at it.
And I think we would be on opposite sides of the argument: me, arguing Jikook were experiencing a hiccup in their relationship and you, rationalizing that moment with anything from 'JK don't have to be at JM's beck and call' 'he is an introvert who is shy to show affections publicly' to even something about the weather.
But I would have looked at this moment from the October pop up video behind scenes and assumed JK was mad at Jimin for something JM had done and had done something in retaliation and was now feeling sorry he did.
And I would have based it off of this moment, or a countless similar ones from around On era or the previous eras where JK had done this exact same thing- frozen in place and staring at Jimin in the middle of a shoot or interview after sliding his hands down Tae's chest, clung on to the others unnecessarily to get a reaction out of JM.
Would I have been right? It really doesn't matter to me as long as it makes sense to me. I ship Jikook in a way that makes sense to me. Jikook are gay, in a gay relationship with each other and are human like anyone of us- that makes sense to me. Whether I am right or wrong.... who cares and why does it matter?
Personally, I think the only person grieving in that period was JK not JM and I don't think he grieved for long before he switched off his humanity and went stone cold tit for tat terminator on JM and BTS's ass. Lol. He had JM looking all kinds of subdued in that era. Lmho.
People grieve in various ways. In my opinion. For Jimin, I feel he puts on a strong facade most times when he has to film during such times and lately I feel he masks his emotions with anger.
Jk masks his pain with anger too sometimes but I feel in recent times, he is leaning more towards indifference. I think he tries not to be as affected by certain things as compared to the early half of 2020...
But I understand what you mean when you talk about grieve. I think for me rather than look for physical evidence of grief like a sad face, a tear drop dripping down a face, I love for vulnerability in them.
JK's is easy to tell because he tends to open himself up to others such as Tae or Jin or Hobi- and I don't mean like his interactions with them. I mean he leans on them for moral or emotional support.
In the Holiday remix video where he was hiding behind Jin, I felt he was feeling very vulnerable and exposed after that intense moment with Jimin.
It's what he does when he is feeling vulnerable. He turns to others especially Jimin and if Jimin is the cause of his vulnerability he turns away from him like he did within On era or even in Run 116.
When he is in a good place with Jimin, often he is closed off to the others. Jimin does the opposite. He shuts himself up entirely from the group. I don't think he likes to go through his pain by himself.
I've always found that bit fascinating about them. Jk opens himself to people when he is at his lowest while JM closes himself off when he is at his worst.
It played out in their rainy day fight as well. In JK's vulnerability, that's when he let Jimin in, lowering his walls while JM on the other hand closed himself off to him.
Can you give me more than they were together in that period because they played with eachother's lapels?
You don't think I'm thinking rationally when I insist on my theory? Uhmmm... okay? What is rational in this case?
Listen, I recieve a lot of hate for my 'irrational thoughts and opinions' out in these streets. I've lost potentially great friendship on this platform because of it. As I type this, there is someone in someone else's DMs persuading them not to read and engage with my posts because I'm extremely evil I think Jikook break up from time to time in their relationship.
If I genuinely believed in the slightest least or had the least doubt that Jikook were together in that period I would change my mind on the topic- damn my pride and ego. It simply isn't worth the hustle.
If it helps your sanity, please stop reading my blogs. My blogs are not for everyone. It makes some people happy, it makes some people mad and some people experience both.
My gratification is in sharing my thoughts and chronicling Jikook's journey for my own appeasement and support of Jikook. I owe it to them as a believer and a supporter to humanize them as much as possible.
I do not seek to convert others, change minds, or convince anyone of my opinions or to disabuse anyone of theirs.
Let's just agree to disagree on the matter please. Or if you can drop the ad hominems, I would be more than happy to go back and forth with you on this very topic. It's actually shaping out to be one of my favorite Jikook eras. I love me some terminator JK. Lol.
Signed,
GOLDY

headcanons.
pisces sun with aquarius moon and rising.
besides roller skating at kickflip park some other places you can find lux is hidden falls, koala kingdom, pretty much any beach god does this girl love the ocean, whispering willow, venus’s salon, and mad villain tattoo.
changes her hair quite often! she’s a blonde so it’s easy for her to do all sorts of colors without a problem. recently she chopped most of it off but it’s definitely not her natural color.
lux has a bad problem with feeding stray cats. she wants one but knows she doesn’t have the time to take care of it so having five felines outside her apartment window at any given time waiting for food is how she copes. someone please stop her.
a party girl at heart. you invite lux somewhere and she’s already got a bottle of tequila ready. it’s her social attitude mixed with not a very high regard for her well being. sometimes it leads her to trouble but hey at least she’s a fun (and flirty) drunk.
cries when she’s angry yes she hates it and no she can’t stop it when it’s coming.
can’t drive bisexual.
lux is very good at making friends and meeting new people but is notoriously bad at keeping them. plenty of connections she’s made have fizzled out or blown up entirely. it’s difficult to get genuinely close to her and she’s good at making people think that they know her.
while she isn't religious lux is a big fan of crystals, if anything for the comfort they can bring her. she's also very into astrology and takes things such as tarot card readings very seriously. she's accepted the fact that there's something out there that she can't explain.
her biggest fear is ending up like her mother.
more tba.
connections.
i prefer chemistry and plotting ooc but here’s a few ideas! a squad, confidante, best friend, cousins, pen pals, unrequited crush (either way), friend crush, enemies/rival, people she avoids, shared interest buddies, good/bad influence.

December 5th is Makoto Kino/Sailor Jupiter’s birthday!
So how can you celebrate?
♃ Rewatch or reread your favourite Jupiter-centric chapter, episode, or musical! Start with episode 025, her introduction and the first instance of her famous “senpai crush”; then move to episode 039, where she crushes... again, this time on a handsome figure skater; episode 049, where her close friend Shinozaki is put in critical condition by a Cardian and she goes looking for revenge; episode 055, where she expresses her love for alien-turned-senpai Seijuro by way of homemade lunch box; episode 096, where Makoto gets a crush on Haruka and learns to explore her own presentation; episode 105, where she loses to a Daimon in a contest of strength and starts to second-guess her abilities; episode 134, where she visits a friend from her old school whom she encouraged to pursue writing; or episode 147, where Makoto waits for her “prince charming” Tiger’s Eye at a dance and launches a thousand MakoAmi shippers yes I see you there.
♃ Sailor Jupiter has several official image songs across different canons you can play for her big day:
90s anime: Anata no Sei Janai [“It’s Not Your Fault”]; STARLIGHT ni KISS Shite [“Kiss Me In the Starlight”]; Wasureru Tame ni Koi wo Shinaide ["Don’t Fall In Love to Forget”]; WE BELIEVE YOU Live Action: MIRACLE DANCE NIGHT; LOVELY YELL Crystal: cherry pie Musicals: Zigzag Slash She was also given a totally new image song in Dic’s original English dub that took the place of “Anata no Sei Janai” in episode 49, Rainy Day Man.
Here’s a playlist of all these songs and other Sailor Jupiter BGM cues!
♃ Whip up Makoto’s favourite foods, meatloaf and cherry pie. Unlike some other fellow Sailor Guardians she’s not a picky eater and has no least-favourite food, so why not challenge yourself to try something new or revisit an ingredient you thought you hated? You never know, you might grow to love it!
♃ Makoto’s very self-reliant, and her hobbies reflect her practical nature, particularly as she had to look after herself from a young age after the deaths of both her parents in a plane crash. She’s also intentionally pursued hobbies considered traditionally “feminine” out of concern that her outward appearance and mannerisms don’t convey who she is inside.
Her most oft-portrayed hobby is cooking, which is both something that brings her personal satisfaction and a way for her to express her love for the people closest to her - she shares her lunch with strangers, serves her friends fruit sandwiches & tea when they meet at her apartment, and daydreams about giving a personalised boxed lunch (bento) to her sweetheart. She’s also a natural teacher, showing the gang how to make curry (which becomes the one dish Usagi can make) and cookies, and showing Motoki how to make hayashi rice (“hashed beef”). Why not host a little dinner party or pot luck for your friends, teach yourself a new recipe (or teach someone else a favourite recipe of your own), or simply celebrate food by patronising a small cafe/bakery like Makoto dreams of owning someday?
She’s also a demonstably skilled sewist, making anything from stuffed toys (apparently, her specialty is teddy bears), to knitting, to bespoke patterns for her class’s maid cafe stall at their high school festival. If you’re a beginner, why not start with some simple DIYs or by altering clothing you already own/thrift, and if you’re experienced, now is a good time to revisit that project you have lying half-finished in the back of your crafts cupboard you keep saying you’ll finish someday when you unpick that one bit I SEE you there.
Makoto loves flowers and has quite a green thumb, perhaps influenced by the Japanese element she draws her powers from - wood. She tends to the strawberry patch at their high school with great success, and though she is often associated with roses, her favourite flower is actually the sasanqua (a type of camellia). She loves flowers so much that she dreams of being a florist someday, a dream she actually achieves in the live action! Pick up a new plant from a local nursery, fill your house with flowers from an independent florist, or start your own produce garden in your back yard, flower pots, or a small indoor terrarium/windowsill. If you don’t have the means to tend to a garden of your own, why not look into seed bombing with plants native to your specific area to combat invasive plant species. Or simply visit your favourite nursery, arboreum, or public garden to surround yourself with nature!
For sports, Makoto is proficient in martial arts, specifically karate (in the original anime) and judo (in the manga and Crystal). She’s also shown to be naturally gifted at ice skating thanks to her past life as Princess Jupiter, since it was a popular sport in the Moon Kingdom, pulling off even very difficult moves like lifting her partner over her head. Check out some local martial arts classes in your area or take some friends to the ice rink! She also enjoyed, and was quite good at, ballroom dancing, so take your partner or a small blue gal pal to some dance lessons - just not ballet, which she can’t quite finesse.
♃ Dress like Makoto for the day! Particularly in the first season, Makoto stuck mostly to “tomboyish” fashions, again reflecting her practicality and sporty side, rarely daring to wear skirts or dresses. However, as the series went on we learned that she in fact admired traditionally “feminine” clothes but feared they wouldn’t suit her. With encouragement from her friends like Usagi and role-models like Haruka, later seasons saw her branch out into a secondary style, with a more mature, “womanly” edge than the young, girlish styles of her friends - though she still enjoyed her original “boyish” fits. Wardrobe staples include casual jackets/hoodies, cable knit sweaters, slacks, shorts, loafers, and sneakers, and later midi skirts, turtlenecks, and bodycon mini-dresses. She wore a lot of green in varying shades, but also orange, teal, and increasingly pink.
As Sailor Jupiter, her image colours were dark green and “sugar pink”, and she wore green ankle boots accented with bright white laces. Her most iconic accessories were her pink rose earrings which, unique amongst the Sailor Guardians, she wore both transformed and not, even throwing them once as a makeshift weapon. Her nails were painted apple/avocado green from her second transformation onwards. Her hair, which to the disbelief of her teachers was naturally curly, was usually worn in a high ponytail with a bobble hairtie (plain teal in the 90s anime, green with petal-like accents in the manga/Crystal/PGSM) and two locks falling over her ears, though she did sometimes swap the hairtie for a ribbon or scrunchie.
Makoto didn’t seem to wear much makeup but did wear cologne/perfume, almost certainly rosen/floral; in fact, it’s one of the first things Usagi notices about her when they meet. If you don’t already have your own signature scent, browse for some local indie perfumers to find something that speaks to you - or look up how to make your own!
♃ Makoto wears a belt of potpourri around her waist in the manga and live action, so you could try mixing a blend of your own dried flower petals and displaying it in a bowl or tucking it in sachets amongst your clothes. In addition to the obvious rose petals, consider including oak leaves or pine needles for an earthy, woodsy note.
♃ Fall in love with someone you met 3 minutes ago!
♃ Crack some skulls!
♃ Clean up your living space! It’s good for the body and the mind.
♃ Fav and read some Sailor Jupiter fanart and fanfic on sites like Pixiv, Twitter, and AO3 - or contribute your own new content! Don’t forget to tag!
Feel free to reply and reblog with your own ideas of how you’re going to celebrate Makoto’s day!
Happy Birthday, Mako!
#this one is the longest to compensate for her getting shafted on individual episodes#(actually these just get longer and longer every time I write one)#(next year I'll be rewriting some of the earlier ones to be more consistent and contain more info too)#sailor moon#sailor jupiter#LONG POST#VERY VERY LONG#birthday#I... may not queue this one as many times on the actual day on account of how long it is

Nico and Ruby being pals because why not part 1
For all their wonderful ideas; @east-river-burned and @thedarkestminds i love them and didn't realize there were so many active TDM accounts! go follow them, amazing
part 2
Ruby's main drive for the Thurmond attack was she felt like she left a bunch of kids behind when the league took her out in TDM. I believe that Nico has the same guilt and feels like the other kids would have benefited a lot more from being "outside" and maybe he deserves to be in camp rather than being a useless green.
One night Ruby is talking about this to him and he starts sobbing because he's so relived that he's not alone and that he has someone he can talk to. Ruby and her new found need to help everyone instantly starts comforting him and stops pushing him away
Ruby tells Nico that its okay. that nothing is his fault either with Jude. he absolutely breaks down because yes they're family but some times its good to hear it after being abandoned by everyone that loved him - Jude, parents, Clancy, Cate left, Vida didn't make a real effort to be his friend. it just feels nice to know he matters to someone after his only friends died (Jude and Blake)
have you seen how Ruby and Nico are just comfy being (Low key) depressed together in ITA when the finally talked about Jude. That's the supportive energy I need in my life
also they've been through so much together
1. They were both manipulated by the same person that they thought loved them
2.Both Thurmond freak kiddies
3. Loved Jude and had to loose him and both thought of it as their fault
the way they'll just get a night mare about Clancy, camp, Jude, you name it and just call each other to deal is great
you know those two nerds just hang out listening to music and full out sobbing but also dancing around like maniacs( just flailing their arms around bc these two gawky teens cant dance to save their lives)or they'll be regular sobbing on the floor and Vida will throw blankets at them to “muffle the sound”
Ruby’s parents or Cate calling Liam and is like " uh hey Ruby and Nico and singing along to " Drivers License" and crying... are you and Ruby good?" que Liam freaking out thinking Ruby is going to break up with him
omg Cate she’ll come home too many times to them crying on the floor or something and feels obligated to get water so they don't dehydrate themselves
No one can convince me Nico doesn't go into 3 am depression bakes till cate wakes up to 90 brownies and drags him back to bed and then he ships a bunch to Ruby in the morning
She gets so exited when she hears the mailman come because it's either Liam sending letters to be cute, or Nico's famous shortcake
Ruby being frustrated with the government sometimes and Nico is like " you know what, pardon my French but SCEW them. I'm going to hack into that politician's computer and make the WIFI connection really bad! That'll show them!"
she knows it wont do anything major but she appreciates that someone she considers family wound do something like that for her even if it risks him getting in trouble
MOVIE NIGHTS
like the saddest movie marathons
need to have water bottles on stand by or they'll get light headed
Vida walking in and saying they look like miserable slugs whos mother died, but getting them popcorn none the less
Zu comes in with chubs and they join in because government people know how to drain the life out of you
poor cate has to come home to 5 of her kids sobbing on the floor throwing popcorn at her tv... she slowly backs out
sometimes after a nightmare about Clancy or Camp or Jude they'll call the other and become quite support for the other because ya, Liam and Vida are amazing friends but sometimes the “we can talk about it and ill try to make you happy “ and “lets go hit the gym for relief” attitude isn't what they need
also their sleep schedules are so messed up Nico will be fully awake at 3 am coding and Ruby will just decide to rearrange her room because the bed is not in the command position and it makes her nervous so great times to call the other
Maybe they'd both talk about Clancy and get some closure about being used. Like I know Ruby took the high road at the end of ita but before than she'd start shaking when she heard his name after he verbally (and sexually) abused her. He's the main reason she can't trust anyone. (before coming to east river she was beginning to get close with lee but than CLANCY got in the way and made her take like 3 steps back.) Maybe she has some doubts about taking the high road but Nico talks to her and shares some good memories of him so she feels like she DID do the right thing and didn't just give a monster a perfect life and allowed him to be happy when he was the reason that Cole died
also ruby feeling horrible and blaming herself for Cole like “I should have known Clancy was in my head. I could have been better. I Should have been better instead of allowed my self to be manipulated and now Cole … Cole is dead because I was too weak..” Nico will take absolutely none of that because he’s seen Clancy use his abilities and understands that no one can over come something like that and that she should stop sulking and instead get better control of her powers so it never happens again
maybe they are in this odd middle space that is being in a camp (seeing all those horrible things and all agreeing not to talk about it hoping those memories will go away) as well as seeing the outside world and discovering it's not much better. Like even just at the league avoided them because they were freaks and also because they were broken/depressed/bummers from camp; like I'm sorry, YOU try going through years of torture, not trusting, not talking, not being able to sleeping safely, not touch anyone and see how YOU turn out! YA Not very cuddly huh?!!
Ruby telling him things like “you are incredible” or “you’re the best” like she did with Zu and him at Walmart and the ranch. He will blush like crazy because you know she means it \
(side not but her doing this with the haven kids because their bio parents never said it to them AHH)
Days where Ruby needs to drag Nico away from the computer and just chill are a must. Probably a beach or a park or ice skating and just know that the other is with them and that everything is going to be okay. It also gives them some closure to know that the world CAN be calm, they just need to know where to look, and sometimes that's in each other.
(I’ll do a part two of them just being pals that's less depressing but i love their duo and I've never heard anyone talk about Nico like.., ever)
