I donāt think this is going to be like ???? The entirety of chapter 2? Just basically writing and posting as I go (at least until AO3 decides I am worthy enough for an account)
I know where the story is going Iām just having A Time getting us there. Build up is important and Iām trying to get better at it I just Maybe Am Not Yet. Itās why a lot of times I give up on stories half-finished because I justā¦donāt know how to build up to the point of the story I want to be. Part of writing this is working myself past that because obviously actually writing the build up is KIND OF IMPORTANT TO ESTABLISH A STORY (I also hated writing intros to essayās in school so go figure)
Anyway, no beta we die like Ianthe in the Weavers Cottage
The Golden Fawn
(working title) (if you have a better idea let me know)
Unfortunately, there wasnāt a whole lot of information about the group itself. Usually when researching something that may or may not be a cult, there would be stories online from former members talking about āescapingā and detailing their time in the group. However, Azriel found none of that. There was no Facebook page with a few dozen members talking about how they escaped. No Substack post from a former member talking about their time living with the group. Justā¦nothing.
Someone who was just casually researching them might think that, without any defectors talking about their experiences, then clearly they were a trustworthy group who really were (as their website explained) āhelping young people find their place in the worldā. Endless photos of smiling college students and twenty-somethingās that clearly just graduated were pictured on the website, and Azriel found one photo that had been uploaded recently that had Elain in it. She was smiling brightly, leaning on a man with bright red hair (Feyre explained that Elain seemed to have joined with a friend of hers from college named Lucien and based on her vague description he assumed that was who she was with in the photo). There was a page detailing different classes they offered (for free) for anyone who felt like they just wanted some direction. Classes from āmanaging anxietyā to āpreparing for job interviewsā running the entire gamut from what someone who was about to finish or had just finished college might be struggling with. It seemed like the absolute perfect program.
Which is exactly why Azriel was starting to take Feyreās fears seriously.
There wasnāt a single organization on the planet that didnāt have scathing blog posts from former members talking about how terrible their experiences were. Every religion had them, every job preparedness training program had them, hell even some particularly intense exercise programs had them. So how was it that this group that boasted over 500 members, with 100 of them living together in some kind of commune, have nothing.
Something wasā¦off.
He stared at the photo of Elain again, smiling brightly at whoever was taking the photo. Something was wrong, but he couldnāt put his finger on it. He just couldnāt stop staring at her face and the way the sun shined down making her hair glow like a halo around her.
Whatever was going on, he was absolutely determined to help her. Whatever this group was, whatever they had done to pull so many people in, he was going to find it and he was going to get her out.
There was an open class being offered at the end of the week at their compound (called ādormitoryā on the website probably because it sounded better) for people āovercoming traumaā which was perfect. All he really had to do was talk about his childhood and play up how much it affected him and he would probably be fast tracked into being asked to live on site. Considering the internet was scrubbed of any negative experiences, he figured they were at least basically computer savvy and probably somewhat vetted the people they brought on site, so he couldnāt exactly walk in giving them his real name since it would be fairly easy to find his PI business.
He needed an identity that would seamlessly fit in with the stories heād be able to tell of his childhood, but would also stand up to a cursory search online to verify he was telling the truth. Someone who, if photos popped up, he could reasonably pass as photos of himself. With a not insignificant amount of self-hatred, he realised that the easiest identity to steal would be one of his half-brothers.
He and Rhys werenāt brothers by blood, but by choice. For the first decade of Azrielās life, he lived with his father and half-brothers who were, to put it lightly, fucking awful. They had beaten and screamed at him and put him thru all manners of abuse, culminating in the incident that permanently scarred his hands when they set him on fire. But he had also been keeping tabs on them (to make sure he could avoid them) so it would be fairly easy to slide into one of their identities to get access.

Some historical details in SHCO:
1. There are no street numbers in Cordona. You have to find a place by locating the streets by name and their relative positioning to find the quest location.
This is a gameplay mechanic but kind of makes sense in the historical background. Before the mid-19th century, not all streets in London had names and none of them had numbers, so all the addresses were descriptive, like "go to X street and turn right at the intersection with Y street, and find the church, then go behind it...etc." Gradually they had street names and numbers but since a lot of streets shared the same name, they had to rename them and reorganize them to make things less confusing. It took a while to have the numbered street address system established.
By the 1880s, London had had modern addresses, but it would make sense in more remote areas, especially colonial islands such as Cordona would be less developed, so the system was not established yet. Also, the island is so tiny that it doesn't need street numbers. So it makes sense that people there use street names together with some descriptions of positioning to address houses and buildings.
2. Mycroft sent child Sherlock (and Jon) to steal a document for him.
It sounds like a very bad thing to do. And for Victorian middle and upper class people, it probably was. But in fact, it is very common for working class people, especially the very poor ones to do regular petty theft and shoplifting, etc, to get food and small household goods. The working class parents would send their children to steal things, such as a couple of eggs, some milk, random small items, etc. As long as they didn't get caught there was no moral burden.
Middle class people had enough income for food and stuff so they didn't have to steal and they probably had more moral judgment against this kind of behavior than the working class, but I suspect they were not immune to this kind of "just steal what you need" way of thinking. When it came to valuables and important things, they could easily come up with the idea of stealing them.
So Mycroft, just like those working class parents, sent his kid brother to steal something important to him. Normal practice of the time XD.
3. Sherlock went to Cambridge University.
Historically, "Oxford and Cambridge were the ancient universities, and had three requirements to attend: You had to be male, be unmarried, and be a member of the Church of England."
Therefore Sherlock must have been a member of the Church of England. To be honest this should not come as a surprise. Although by the 1880s the religious limitation in politics was much loosened, members of Church of England were still the mainstream in political circles and likely to have the upper hand.
As for Mycroft in the game, he is the kind of man who doesn't care about religion itself but will use it as a political resource. So it is just natural for him to join the church and have his brother join (or default to be a member and stay that way). And Sherlock probably doesn't care about religion either. So he possibly goes along with his brother to avoid adding more conflict to their relationship, or he just wants to go to Cambridge.
BTW, I am curious about Sherlock's religious view, which is not mentioned much in the game or canon, leaving out much space for theorization and speculation.
Edit: There were some rapid changes during the mid to late 19th century on religious limitations for all social aspects. So it was very likely that by the time Sherlock went to the university, being a member of Church of England was no longer a requirement.
It is also the case that during the early Victoria era, in the medical field, surgeons and apothecaries, the lower ranks of doctors were not required to have any medical degree from college. They just learned the trade from apprenticeship. Only physicians, the higher rank "gentlemen doctors", graduated from prestigious universities with a degree. But during the time Watson became a surgeon, he acquired a medical degree at the University of London, which in fact already started to provide medical degrees for women at the time.
4. Sherlock in his school age.
Homeschooling was not rare in Victorian England, especially for the families that had the means and dedication to children's education. Schools were usually very harsh and a lot of physical punishment was involved in education. Given Sherlock's personality and the possible difficulties caused by his mental health issue, he could have been homeschooled, at least before his parents passed--before they moved to Cordona, he didn't realize Jon was not real. That fact alone could have caused big trouble for him in school.
Since Sherlock has that undisciplined and nonconformist personality as well as being very isolated, I tend to think he was homeschooled as a boy, both in the game and canon. And his mental health issue in the game makes homeschooling more plausible.

Pagan Paths: Reclaiming
Many pagans and witches are also political activists. Pagan values ā such as respect for the planet and for non-human forms of life, belief in equality regardless of race or gender, and personal autonomy ā often lead people to social or political action. However, as far as I know, there is only one pagan religion that has actually made this social activism one of its core tenets: Reclaiming. Reclaiming combines neopaganism with anarchist principles and social activism.
This post is not meant to be a complete introduction to Reclaiming. Instead, my goal here is to give you a taste of what Reclaiming practitioners believe and do, so you can decide for yourself if further research would be worth your time. In that spirit, I provide book recommendations at the end of this post.
History and Background
Given Reclaimingās reputation as a social justice-oriented faith, itās not surprising that it grew out of activist efforts. Reclaiming began with well-known pagan authors Starhawk and Diane Baker, who began teaching classes on modern witchcraft in California in the 1980s. Members of these classes began protesting and doing other activist work together, and this pagan activist group eventually grew into the Reclaiming Collective.
Out of the founders of Reclaiming, Starhawk has probably had the biggest influence on the tradition. Starhawk was initiated into the Feri tradition by its founder Victor Anderson, but had also been trained in Wicca and worked with figures such as Zsuzsanna Budapest (founder of Dianic Wicca). These Feri and Wiccan influences are clear in Starhawkās books, such as The Spiral Dance, and have also helped shape the Reclaiming tradition.
Like Feri, Reclaiming is an ecstatic tradition that emphasizes the interconnected divinity of all things. Like Eclectic Wicca, Reclaiming is a non-initiatory religion (meaning anyone can join, regardless of training or experience level) with lots of room to customize and personalize your individual practice.
However, to say that Starhawk is the head of the Reclaiming tradition, or even to credit her as its sole founder, would be incorrect. As Reclaiming has grown and spread, it has become increasingly decentralized. Decisions are made by consensus (meaning the group must reach a unanimous decision) in small, individual communities, which author Irisanya Moon calls ācells.ā Each cell has its own unique beliefs, practices, and requirements for members, stemming from Reclaimingās core values (see below). Some of these cells may stick very closely to the kind of paganism Starhawk describes in her books, while others may look very, very different.
As with any other religion, there are times where a governing body is needed to make widespread changes to the system, such as changing core doctrine. When these situations do arise, each individual cell chooses a representative, who in turn serves as a voice for that cell in a gathering with other representatives from other cells. BIRCH (the Broad Intra-Reclaiming Council of Hubs) is an example of this.
At BIRCH meetings, representatives make decisions via consensus, the same way decisions are made in individual cells. While this means changes may take months or even years to be proposed, discussed, modified, and finally passed, it also means that everyone within the tradition is part of the decision-making process.
Core Beliefs and Values
Like Wicca, Reclaiming has very little dogma. Unlike Wicca, the Reclaiming Collective has a public statement of values that clearly and concisely lays out the essentials of what they believe and do. This document, which is called the Principles of Unity, is not very long, so Iām going to lay it out in its entirety here.
This is the most recent version of the Principles of Unity, taken from the Reclaiming Collective website in February 2021:
āThe values of the Reclaiming tradition stem from our understanding that the earth is alive and all of life is sacred and interconnected. We see the Goddess as immanent in the earthās cycles of birth, growth, death, decay and regeneration. Our practice arises from a deep, spiritual commitment to the earth, to healing and to the linking of magic with political action.
Each of us embodies the divine. Our ultimate spiritual authority is within, and we need no other person to interpret the sacred to us. We foster the questioning attitude, and honor intellectual, spiritual and creative freedom.
We are an evolving, dynamic tradition and proudly call ourselves Witches. Our diverse practices and experiences of the divine weave a tapestry of many different threads. We include those who honor Mysterious Ones, Goddesses, and Gods of myriad expressions, genders, and states of being, remembering that mystery goes beyond form. Our community rituals are participatory and ecstatic, celebrating the cycles of the seasons and our lives, and raising energy for personal, collective and earth healing.
We know that everyone can do the life-changing, world-renewing work of magic, the art of changing consciousness at will. We strive to teach and practice in ways that foster personal and collective empowerment, to model shared power and to open leadership roles to all. We make decisions by consensus, and balance individual autonomy with social responsibility.
Our tradition honors the wild, and calls for service to the earth and the community. We work in diverse ways, including nonviolent direct action, for all forms of justice: environmental, social, political, racial, gender and economic. We are an anti-racist tradition that strives to uplift and center BIPOC voices (Black, Indigenous, People of Color). Our feminism includes a radical analysis of power, seeing all systems of oppression as interrelated, rooted in structures of domination and control.
We welcome all genders, all gender histories, all races, all ages and sexual orientations and all those differences of life situation, background, and ability that increase our diversity. We strive to make our public rituals and events accessible and safe. We try to balance the need to be justly compensated for our labor with our commitment to make our work available to people of all economic levels.
All living beings are worthy of respect. All are supported by the sacred elements of air, fire, water and earth. We work to create and sustain communities and cultures that embody our values, that can help to heal the wounds of the earth and her peoples, and that can sustain us and nurture future generations.ā
The Principles of Unity were originally written in 1997, to create a sense of cohesion as the Reclaiming Collective grew and diversified. However, the Principles have not remained constant since the 1990s. They have been rewritten multiple times as the Reclaiming tradition has grown and the needs of its members have changed. Like everything else within the tradition, the Principles of Unity are not beyond scrutiny, critical analysis, and reform.
For example, in 2020 the wording of the Principles of Unity was changed to affirm diverse forms of social justice work ā including but not limited to non-violent action ā and to express a more firm anti-racist attitude that seeks to uplift BIPOC. This was a major change, as the previous version of the document explicitly called for non-violence and included a paraphrased version of the Rede (often called the Wiccan Rede), āHarm none, and do what you will.ā This change was made via consensus by BIRCH, after a series of discussions about the meaning of non-violence and the need to make space for other types of activism.
Aside from the Principles of Unity, there are no hard and fast rules for Reclaiming belief. As Irisanya Moon says in her book on the tradition, āThere is no typical Reclaiming Witch.ā
Important Deities and Spirits
Just as with belief and values, views on deity within Reclaiming are extremely diverse. A member of this tradition might be a monist, a polytheist, a pantheist, an agnostic, or even a nontheist. (Note that nontheism is different from atheism ā while atheism typically includes a rejection of religion, nontheism allows for meaningful religious experience without belief in a higher power.)
The Principles of Unity state that the Goddess is immanent in the earthās cycles. For some, this means that the earth is a manifestation of the Great Goddess, the source of all life. For others, the Goddess is seen as a symbol that represents the interconnected nature of all life, rather than being literally understood as a personified deity. And, of course, there are many, many people whose views fall somewhere in between.
In her book The Spiral Dance, Starhawk points out that the deities we worship function as metaphors, allowing us to connect with that which cannot be comprehended in its entirety. āThe symbols and attributes associated with the Goddessā¦ engage us emotionally,ā she says. āWe know the Goddess is not the moon ā but we still thrill to its light glinting through the branches. We know the Goddess is not a woman, but we respond with love as if She were, and so connect emotionally with all the abstract qualities behind the symbol.ā
Hereās another quote from The Spiral Dance that sums up this view of deity: āI have spoken of the Goddess as a psychological symbol and also as manifest reality. She is both. She exists, and we create Her.ā
In that book, Starhawk proposes a perspective on deity that combines Wiccan and Feri theology. Starhawkās Goddess encompasses both the Star Goddess worshiped in Feri ā God Herself, the divine source of all things ā and the Wiccan Goddess ā Earth Mother and Queen of the Moon. This Goddessās consort, known as the God, is similar to the Wiccan God, but includes aspects of Feri deities like the Blue God.
For some, this model of deity is the basis of their practice, while others prefer to use other means to connect with That-Which-Cannot-Be-Known. Someone may consider themselves a part of Reclaiming and be a devotee of Aphrodite, or Thor, or Osiris, or any of countless other personified deities.
Reclaiming Practice
As I said earlier, Reclaiming began with classes in magic theory, and teaching and learning are still important parts of the tradition. The basic, entry-level course that most members of the tradition take is called Elements of Magic. In this class, students explore the five elements ā air, fire, water, earth, and spirit ā and how these elements relate to different aspects of Reclaiming practice. Though most members of the tradition will take the Elements of Magic class, this is not a requirement.
After completing Elements of Magic, Reclaiming pagans may or may not choose to take other classes, including but not limited to: the Iron Pentacle (mastering the five points of Sex, Pride, Self, Power, and Passion and bringing them into balance), Pearl Pentacle (mastering the points of Love, Law, Knowledge, Liberation/Power, and Wisdom and embodying these qualities in relationships with others), Rites of Passage (a class that focuses on initiation and rewriting your own narrative), and Communities (a class that teaches the skills necessary to work in a community, such as conflict resolution and ritual planning).
If youāve read my post on the Feri tradition, you probably recognize the Iron and Pearl Pentacles. This is another example of how Feri has influenced Reclaiming.
Another place where the teaching/learning element of Reclaiming shows up is in Witchcamp. Witchcamp is an intensive spiritual retreat, typically held over a period of several days in a natural setting away from cities. (However, in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, some covens are now offering virtual Witchcamps). Because each Witchcamp is run by a different coven, with different teachers, there is a lot of variation in what they teach and what kind of work campers do.
Each individual camp has a main theme ā some camps keep the same theme every time, while others choose a new theme each year. Some camps are adults-only, while others are family-oriented and welcome parents with children. Typically, campers will have several classes to choose from in the mornings and afternoons, with group rituals in the evenings.
Speaking of ritual, this brings us to another important part of Reclaiming practice: ecstatic ritual. The goal of most Reclaiming rituals is to connect with the divine by achieving a state of ecstasy.
Irisanya Moon says that Reclaiming rituals often use what she calls the āEIEIOā framework: Ecstatic (involving an altered state of consciousness ā the transcendent ecstasy of touching the divine), Improvisational (though there may be a basic ritual outline, there is an openness to acting in the spirit of the moment), Ensemble (rituals are held in groups, often with rotating roles), Inspired (taking inspiration from mythology, personal experience, or current events), and Organic (developing naturally, even if that means going off-script). This framework is similar to the rituals Starhawk describes in her writing.
There are no officially recognized holidays in Reclaiming, but many members of the tradition celebrate the Wheel of the Year, similar to Wiccans. The most famous example of this is the annual Spiral Dance ritual held each Samhain in California, with smaller versions observed by covens around the world.
Further Reading
If you are interested in Reclaiming, I recommend starting with the book Reclaiming Witchcraft by Irisanya Moon. This is an excellent, short introduction to the tradition. After that, itās probably worth checking out some of Starhawkās work ā I recommend starting with The Spiral Dance.
At this point, if you still feel like this is the right path for you, the next step I would recommend is to take the Elements of Magic class. If you live in a big city, it may be offered in-person near you ā if not, look around online and see if you can find a virtual version. Accessibility is huge to Reclaiming pagans, and many teachers offer scholarships and price their classes on a sliding scale, so you should be able to find a class no matter what your budget is.
If you canāt find an Elements of Magic class, there is a book called Elements of Magic: Reclaiming Earth, Air, Fire, Water & Spirit, edited by Jane Meredith and Gede Parma, which provides lessons and activities from experienced teachers of the class. Teaching yourself is always going to be more difficult than learning from someone else, but itās better than nothing!

I made a post about the Seraphites, so now I want to make one about the WLF. This post is mostly about the WLF's home base, aka the stadium and the area immediately around it. I've included some of my favorite pictures, and my thoughts and observations about where they live and their culture.
Under the cut again to keep things nice and clean.
I gotta say, this blew my mind when I first saw this as Abby. The WLF really have their shit together. Multiple power sources, a bunch of the resources FEDRA left behind, and multiple food sources. The field has cattle, sheep, and chickens plus some farming. On the steps they have even more areas for farming. They have a way to collect water, and even people to design and string up their logo everywhere.
It makes sense, supposedly thousands of people live here (you can't see it unless except via glitch, but there is also baseball stadium immediately next to this that they might also occupy).
We only see where Abby and other soldiers (perhaps squad leaders?) live. They have a pretty cushy life, two per luxury box (the rooms NFL teams overcharge for that run along the upper level of stadiums). Mel also mentions a special area for young families, I wouldn't be surprised if these areas were further divided. Perhaps there is also housing for larger families and single people who aren't soldiers or squad leaders. I very much wonder if those who join the military get better housing than those that work as farmers (or dishwashers, teachers, laundry washers, cooks, etc.). As mentioned earlier, Abby and Manny live in a luxury box, and there are 112 of those in the stadium this is based on. That's housing for 224 people, if they all live like the people in Abby's hallway. That would mean there has to be more housing in other parts of the stadium.
This stadium was once used by FEDRA, and you can see the concrete barriers they left behind along the edge of the field. They have to have more cattle than this, to feed all the people that supposedly live under the WLF. There is farmland around the stadium (more on that later), so maybe they mostly let them graze out there, then move some in when they plan on slaughtering them soon.
I love that they have wind turbines AND solar panels. You can see the influence that the Fireflies had on Issac and the WLF, they really focus on stability and restoring what was lost (at least when it comes to comfort). So they have electricity, sustainable food sources (and multiple kinds too), and a way to collect water (you can't see it in this shot, but they use a system similar to Jackson's, just on a much wider scale).
They teach a curriculum similar to what was taught to kids before the outbreak. We only see two classrooms, but from what I can tell they try to give the gives the type of education they could have received in the old days (as best they can, at least). Both the teachers you see are pretty young, which makes me wonder who taught them.
Most of the kinds you see in class are pretty young, like less than 10. These look a little order (they are outside the stadium in the market area, which I will talk about more a little later). I wonder how long WLF children are required to attend school (I think I saw a sign for 1st through 6th grade, so at least that?). I imagine they get a basic education with some broad looks into various topics, and maybe the ones most apt for study are selected to do specialized careers like teaching or meteorology. Other children are probably pushed into farming or the military portion of the WLF. Regardless of what they study, they probably also get a heavy dose of WLF propaganda. That aligns with how gung-ho many of them are to fight.
I wonder if military service is compulsory, like everyone has has to do at least so much time and then they can do other things if they want. Or maybe they make it so you don't have to fight if you don't want to, but those that do get better perks.
Most of the WLF you see appear to be in their 20's or 30's, or at least the fighters. That would mean they have spent most (if not all) of their lives under military rule, and they would have a special allegiance to the WLF since they manage things so much better than FEDRA did. Plus, you know, all that propaganda. I imagine they are told a lot about how the WLF is restoring society and how the WLF saved them from FEDRA/Scars/infected.
Sorta related, I thought of an WLF AU. Ellie grows up in Seattle under the WLF, perhaps with Riley and Dina and the other characters from canon. So many interesting things can be done with this, but that's for another post maybe.
This is one the cafeteria's the WLF use. I believe this is one of a few, although this is the only one you see. There is also a butcher and small market for clothing and items here too. They prepare food here, but I think the majority of cooking is done in an area set up for it in the stands.
They have posted meal times for groups A-F, and separate meal times for children and the late night patrol. So maybe this is the only cafeteria? Each end is blocked off, so maybe they use some of the corridor that circles the stadium for more living quarters.
This is also community space where they can play games, chat, or read. There also seems to be a mix of soldiers and other workers eating together, as well as young families (there is at least 1 or 2 women with young babies in here).
This little detail was super cute to me, but it also tells you a lot about WLF society. Everyone has a job to do, there is a role and place for everyone to contribute.
I'll talk more about this in another post (titled "It's Silly to Call a Post-apocalyptic Group 'Fascists', but Still the WLF Is Pretty Messed Up"), but an important thing to remember about the WLF is that everything comes down to Issac. He has the final say on everything, he makes all the major decisions, he picks squad leaders, he decides who needs to be punished, he's basically the Supreme Leader. Issac has been shown to be somewhat progressive with some things (you can follow whatever religion you want or none at all in the WLF, the WLF has no problem with LGBTQ people, you can get medical waivers for military duty, they provide support for pregnant women and parents, etc.), and in other ways he is very much the opposite (he punishes anyone who disagrees with him - this could be a relatively light punishment of a crappy assignment or it could be a beating, then there's the whole attempted genocide thing). Anyway, my point is that there are good things about the WLF, but also there is a serious darkside.
Anyway, when I saw this lady and her baby I immediately thought of Dina doing this with JJ while she gardens.
I absolutely loveeeee this little detail. A mural for the fallen. This really reminds me of some stuff you could see today, just replace the wolf with an eagle and make the uniforms camo.
There are 46ish names on this wall, so I wonder if it is continuously updated or if there are multiple murals, because they definitely have lost more people than that over the years. Also, there are about 150 people at the FOB (the amount of bodies at the FOB, yes I counted) that will need to be added. Maybe the war with the Seraphites just really exploded in the last few weeks (or maybe longer) leading up to Ellie's arrival.
I love that you can pause during the ride with Abby, Mel, and Manny to look around the outside of the stadium. Immediately outside there are train tracks and what appears to be a large market running along side of it. This is on the west side of the stadium, I believe. A major highway intersection is also nearby.
The market has all sorts of goods, food, gas, clothing, cleaning products, TVs and other electronics, records, and even more. I wonder if this is some sort of intake area for any goods they bring back to the base. But who runs these little shops? From some notes you can find we know their economy runs on trade, so how does this work?
Once you get past the market area, you see a pretty vast section of farmland. I loved this shot because it also shows one of their rain water storage areas. They mark this water as to be used only for irrigation, so they must use something else for people to drink and bathe with. Or maybe they just filter some water for people to use, and the rest goes to the plants.
In the background you can see the wall and a guard tower. There is a larger wall (like much larger, I'm talking maybe 5 stories) around the QZ, and a smaller one that runs around the stadium.
This is labeled "Checkpoint #4", so I'm not sure if that means there are other gates, but this is the only one we see in game.
The wall is pretty thick, and you can see these guard towers spaced out all alongside it (much like in Jackson). Once you leave the walls you are immediately surrounded by the wasteland that is post-apocalyptic Seattle.
#The amount of detail they put into this game is insane#I can see why it took so long to make#The WLF's base is probably my second favorite place outside of Jackson#But there isn't a lot of competition#WLF thesis stuff#I have spent way too much time thinking about this game#the last of us 2#WLF

Fate and Phantasms #173: Sherlock Holmes
Yes weāre going out of order, but I have a very good reason for this! ...Well, not really. We were already in the geniuses section, and any excuse to not think about summer while itās still 40 degrees out is one Iām going to take.
Anyway, today weāre making the man famous for discombobulation, Sherlock Holmes! Track down mysteries, show up everyone else in the party, and kick ass with Baritsu. Easy stuff.
Check out his build breakdown below the cut, or his character sheet over here!
Next up: Chaldeaās other resident genius.
Race and Background
There are some theories about Sherlockās race, but for simplicityās sake weāll call you a Variant Human, giving you +1 Dexterity and Wisdom. You also get Sleight of Hand proficiency for some close-up detective work, and the Keen Mind feat, giving you +1 Wisdom, the ability to always point north, perfect time telling, and the ability to recall anything from the last month in-game, a.k.a. the DMās nightmare.
You know a lot yourself, but you also know how to build and maintain an archive, so the closest background to match would be the Cloistered Scholar background, giving you proficiency in Nature and Religion. Arcana and history would suit you better, but Iāve got something in mind for that, and good things come to those who wait.
Ability Scores
As youād probably expect, your Wisdom and Intelligence are pretty freaking high. You are Sherlock Holmes after all. Youāre pretty strong, but the reason youāre so scary in a fight is because of your technique, so weāre going with Dexterity here instead. You snort cocaine like itās going out of style, so your Constitution has to be able to keep up. This does mean your Strength is a bit low, but youāre practically an anime protagonist, there are some things we just canāt get in a balanced build. Finally, dump Charisma. Half the reason you drag Guda along on your cases is to talk people out of thinking youāre the murderer, honestly itās kind of embarrassing.
Class Levels
1. Rogue 1: Youāre a skilled guy, and rogues get skills for days. You get proficiencies in Dexterity and Intelligence saves, as well as four skills- Deception for disguises, and Insight, Investigation, and Perception for cases and clue-catching. You also get Expertise in two skills, doubling their proficiency bonus. Right off the bat Iād suggest Insight and InvestigationĀ so you can hopefully get to the bottom of things quickly. Foiling a plan at the last second is thrilling and all, but utterly shutting down a villain is so satisfying.
To help with that, you can use a Sneak Attack once per turn if youāre using a ranged or finesse weapon and either have advantage against a target or a friend within 5ā² of them. You also learn Thievesā Cant, itās a language that will be especially helpful when you have to navigate the criminal underbelly of a city.
2. Monk 1:None of that was Baritsu though, so weāre bouncing over to monk for some Martial Arts. You can use Dexterity instead of Strength on monk weapons (this does not make them finesse), and spending an action to attack with one also lets you make an unarmed attack as a bonus action. Your unarmed and monk weapon attacks also do at least a 1d4 of damage.
You also get Unarmored Defense, making your AC 10 plus your dexterity modifier plus your wisdom modifier. I donāt care how hot it looks, that corset isnāt armor.
3. Cleric 1: Last multiclass, I swear. Since you can literally make clues appear like magic, we kinda need a bit of magic. Clerics get Spells that they cast and prepare using their Wisdom, which you might have noticed is becoming a pretty important ability for you.
If you want clues, youāll need knowledge, at least enough to know that the Knowledge domain can help with that. At first level you gain the Blessings of Knowledge, making you proficient in History and ArcanaĀ and doubling those proficiencies as well (hey, see what I said about waiting?).
You get three cantrips for joining the clergy, Light gives you some of those cool magnifying spotlights you carry around, Thaumaturgy for some parlor tricks, and Guidance for when you really have to focus.
For first level spells, Command gives you a basic command spell, and Identify teaches you all about the magic affecting an item or creature. Normally that would be more of a research montage, but some times youāre in a hurry.Ā
As far as actually prepared spells go, anything withĀ āDetectā in the name is a good pick.
4. Rogue 2: Now that weāve got our spread, letās build some of these classes up. Second level rogues can make Cunning Actions, Dashing, Disengaging, or Hiding as a bonus action. If you already spent your action rifling through someoneās files and theyāre about to burst into the room, youāll thank me.
5. Rogue 3: Thereās really only two possible picks for your subclass, and weāre saving the Mastermind for Moriarty. As an Inquisitive, you have an Ear for Deceit, giving your Insight rolls a minimum of 8 on the die. On top of that, your Eye for Detail lets you make Perception and Investigation checks as a bonus action, further speeding up the process. On top of that, your Insightful Fighting uses your bonus action to make an Insight check versus a creatureās Deception check. On a success, you donāt need advantage to make sneak attacks against that creature for up to a minute. Finally, your Steady Aim uses your bonus action to get advantage on an attack if you donāt move that turn. Iād just use your insightful fighting, but your rival might push you to your limit.
This is a lot of stuff to do on your bonus action, and itās only going to get worse from here.
6. Monk 2: Back at the school of Baritsu, you gain Ki Points that you can spend to make two unarmed attacks, dodge, disengage, or dash as a bonus action. Doing either of the latter two also doubles your jump distance for the turn. You also gain Unarmored Movement, increasing your movement speed by 10 feet while not wearing armor.
7. Monk 3: We need the most technique in the fewest levels, so that means weāre turning to the Way of the Open Hand once more. Your Open Hand Technique gives extra benefits to your flurry of blows. On each hit, the creature either canāt take reactions for a round, must succeed on a dexterity save or be knocked prone, or must make a strength save or be pushed 15ā² away.
You can also Deflect Missiles as your reaction, catching an incoming attack and reducing its damage, possibly sending it back at the enemy if you bring it down to 0.
8. Monk 4: Our first Ability Score Improvement will instead be used to make you Observant, bumping up your Wisdom by 1, giving you +5 to passive perception and investigation, and allowing you to read lips. You can also Slow Fall as a reaction to take less fall damage. Hey, any help to survive the Reichenbach is well appreciated.
9. Rogue 4: Back in rogue now, your second ASI is going towards your Dexterity for stronger and more effective attacks, as well as a higher AC. 17ā²s pretty good for a corset.
10. Rogue 5: Fifth level rogues get an Uncanny Dodge, allowing you to react to an incoming attack and halve the damage.Ā
11. Cleric 2: You didnāt think we forgot about this one, did you? Knowledge clerics get two Channel Divinity options each short rest. Turn Undead is your bog standard option, or you can gain the Knowledge of the Ages, spending an action to gain proficiency in one skill or tool for 10 minutes. Protagonist powers, activate!
12. Cleric 3: Third level cleric, second level spells. Suggestion is a more open ended command spell, and Augury is moreĀ ātelling the futureā than deduction. That being said, you do get Calm Emotions to keep your cool, as well as Find Traps, Locate Object, and Zone of Truth.Ā
13. Rogue 6: You know Iām a sucker for quadrupling things, so for this round of Expertise double up on History and Perception. Youāre good at everything, but especially current events.
14. Rogue 7: At this level you get the powerful Evasion feature, turning your failed dexterity saves to avoid damage into successes and successes into no damage at all.
15. Rogue 8: Use this ASI to bump up your Intelligence. Itās a shame we had to wait this long for it, but better late than never.
16. Rogue 9: Your Steady Eye gives you advantage on perception and investigation checks as long as youāre moving at half speed. Unless your DMās really keen on mapping out rp situations, this is pretty much permanent advantage.
17. Rogue 10: Another ASI, another bump to Intelligence. Does it really do anything? Probably not, but you can feel smug about it regardless.
18. Rogue 11: Your Reliable Talent means you skill rolls are always 10 or greater on checks youāre proficient with. And thanks to your knowledge of the ages, you can be proficient in just about anything.
19. Rogue 12: Use your last ASI to max out your WisdomĀ for more AC, stronger spells, and more skilled Baritsu.
20. Rogue 13: Your capstone ability is your Unerring Eye, an action to sense illusions, shapechangers, and the like around you. You can sense somethingās off, but will have to investigate yourself. You can use this a number of times per long rest equal to your wisdom modifier.
Pros
Your minimum rolls in Insight and Investigation are 27 and 26 respectively, making you an ace detective. Your ability to root out lies, plus your photographic memory, will make any mystery you play through a breeze. (You the player still have to connect the dots, though.) Also, literally being able to see through illusions is a big plus.
Maxed out wisdom also means your open hand techniques are as strong as possible, giving you a good amount of battlefield control to beat down enemies and push them around.
Knowledge of the Ages plus Reliable Talent equals you being really good at everything when you need to be, and youāre much faster a switching things up than Hundred Personas.Ā
Cons
Since we only splashed into monk, your baritsu isnāt that great an option for damage. It also comes with the caveat that you canāt use your sneak attack unarmed, so you will have to carry the murder weapon around with you.
Despite being a melee fighter, your hp is pretty low, making straight confrontations a bad idea.
We really wanted Unerring Eye, but as a consequence we could only get a couple levels of the other classes. This means your ki points and spell slots are rather limited. But I mean, youāre Sherlock freaking Holmes, youāll know when you need to use them and when you donāt.

HISTORY
Ritesh and Harsha had one dream for their only child: to be born under the best possible consequences. Which was after they had settled down in the United States, gotten their motel running, and ensured there was no possible way they could be sent back.Ā
None of that worked out. Ajita Hannu was born in Mumbai, India, after all.Ā
She grew up with her family, all of them on a small estate in the middle of the city, being exposed to the noises and the smells of her parentās city. She was taught English by her motherās sister, she learned some Hindi, but mostly she was kept at home while her parents tried to figure out their plan. Because the plan was still the plan. When her parents had finally gotten the visaās and everything needed for their planned immigration, Ajita was seven. She had the same attitude as her peers: to be the best at everything.Ā
Still, Pleasance Ohio was a huge adjustment. Everything was so quiet. Ajita spent a lot of her time either at home or at school, because she didnāt like how quiet it was. Something about it felt eerie. But slowly she became more and more acquainted with the other kids in the town, even if she had little time for it. Her parents owned the small inn at the border of the tow: the Southwood Inn. And between herself, her mom, her dad, and a friend of theirs who helps with the cleaning all the work is divided up. After school she helped out. Just a little bit at first, but by the time she was twelve, she did everything. And she did it as practically as possible. Ajita wasted not a single moment.Ā
She would study while manning the front desk, listen to Spanish podcasts while she cleaned the rooms, and prepare her school paper while she checked the inventory. Ajita always had her hands in multiple projects at once. She was the main voice for less plastic at school, protected anyone at school who felt different, started a LGBTQ+ group because she had realised already at eleven that she was very much into women. Most people thought she was too much, always voicing her opinion or trying to get votes or signatures or followers or whatever she needed. She had very few friends, but she didnāt care. Her parents were her best friends, and Ajita had great plans. Like her parents, she had great plans.Ā
Studying came effortless to Ajita, she got high marks, sucked in information at any opportunity and by age sixteen was fluent in English, Hindi, and Spanish, with the intention of learning Catalan, German, and Italian. To her every subject was equally important, but there was one thing she was most interested in: what people wanted. How people saw themselves. People. She wanted to know how humanity worked. So she applied at the University of Barcelona. Her parents werenāt happy, and she was met with some resistance. They didnāt want to let her go, afraid that she would be the odd one out, misunderstood, and that she didnāt want to come back. But they didnāt realise how much Ajita loved Pleasance. She would always come back.Ā
After a whole lot of begging, Ajita was allowed to leave.Ā
She moved to Barcelona at eighteen, her grades were top of the bunch, the scholarship was in her pocket, and she had grand dreams for her future. She was already on her way to study Catalan, and managed to pick her way through the application in Spanish without any difficulty.Ā
She studied for one and a half year in Barcelona, traveling all over the country on the weekend, before she quit the program. The language was part of the problem, Catalan was different from Spanish, and because of her internal confusion trying to differentiate between two languages, she didnāt get the marks she wanted, or the marks that would keep her there.
Since she still had half a year till the next semester, Ajita traveled around most of Western and some of Eastern Europe, backpacking and crowd surfing. She had made enough friends over the years that she could knock on the doors in random cities and towns, and would always find a place to stay if she wasnāt staying in hostels. The experience was fantastic, and it was even better when she realised not much later that she had been accepted at the University of Ghent for another course in Philosophy.Ā
Now nineteen, Ajita moved to Belgium for a second try at Philosophy, taking Dutch classes on the side and once again spending her weekends traveling all over, this time visiting places in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany.Ā
Her bachelor was three years, and a one year Master - another reason why she came to love the Belgian system. That and she didnāt have to pay all that much when it came to tuition. But Ajita found more than just happiness in the place. She also learned a lot about herself. Belgium was a whole lot more accepting of her status as being a lesbian, but it wasnāt just that, she joined the LGBTQ+ clubs around the city of Ghent, and found herself.Ā
Growing up they had always felt different, not really fitting the gender roles people had assigned to them. They didnāt like wearing dresses, they joined soccer teams, and all their friends growing up had been boys. They had felt slightly awkward in their own body, and jealous of male characters in the media. Growing up they wanted to be Batman or Ash Ketchum for Halloween, not a princes like their girly classmates. They loved getting dirty and felt awkward when someone suggested they wear make-up. They were a tomboy, according to the neighbors, their long hair always in a knot on the back of their head, checking out their face in the mirror, imaging themselves different.Ā
Although Ajita could never really say different in what way.Ā
Demi-girl was the term she adopted in Belgium, and she planned to bring home with her.Ā
Their last summer vacation they traveled to India, where they stayed till Holi.Ā
She returned home with a Bachelor in her pocket, and over twenty thousand followers on her youtube traveling account. Both of which were worth little back in Pleasance, but she would find a way.Ā
The plan was to take over the family business, and then she was going to run for mayor, but before she would do everything she could to make Pleasance better. Her beloved hometown. Despite all the cities they had seen and placed they had visited, nothing could top Pleasance.Ā
HEADCANONS
They have a husky called Charlemagne. They found him a year ago in Bulgaria, and after a whole lot of effort, managed to send him to their parents in Pleasance. For the past year theyāve taken care of him, but he instantly recognised Ajita when she returned home.
Ajita does not believe in Ghosts. She does believe that local legends can help Pleasance grow as a tourist spot.Ā
Ajita is rather known around Pleasance, or was, before she left to study abroad. She was a very annoying kid, who was always putting a foot in someoneās business, writing her school paper, getting signatures. Ajita had so many causes that she got swamped half of the time. She would talk to anyone who she met on the street, any tourist, any traveler. The tourists love her, the locals not so much at times.Ā
She helped put some places out of business when she was younger, outing businesses that were doing horrible things to their employees. But she has also managed to keep a lot of big corporations out, collecting so many signatures that she got a project stopped before it even began.Ā
She doesnāt like George Alby at all.
Local businesses to Ajita are the most important thing in a small town, and big companies put them out of business is one of their major concerns. They understand the philosophy behind it, and get why small business have problems surviving while big corporations can go ahead without much trouble, but she believes there is a possibility.Ā
They love backpacking, and hiking, which is what they always end up doing during the weekend, bringing Charlemagne along.Ā
WANTED CONNECTIONS
- childhood friends: Ajita was seven when they came to Pleasance. Theyāre bound to have known most people around the school, being as active as they were, though few people could probably stand them.
- enemies: you donāt get as politically active as Ajita and not make any enemies, they are sure to figure out where they stand now, having returned after studying.Ā
- visitors at the Southwood Inn: Ajita works at her parentās business, though sometimes it looks like sheās the one running it. Sheās not curious, but she will try to strike up a conversation.Ā

Necromancer - Shklance
Dudessss. If yaāll are still here for stories, youāre literally the best humans. I think itās been months, what with mental health issues followed by the corona (because of course I would beĀ āessential personnelā and of course they increased our weekly hours to over 50) followed by the start of the semester, but Iāve been working on this off and on for a few weeks now, as well as some original stuff. So if you guys are interested in my original works, lemme know and Iāll post some of it. Who knows maybe itāll motivate me to actually finish one of my books.
Also, this is super rough, so be nice to me. Iām playing around with some ideas here, so feedback is appreciated, and let me know if you want more of this au cause I havenāt decided anything with it yet.
-----------------------------------
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Hereās the thing. The gods are real. Or at least someoneās gods. Or maybe theyāre just god-like? Anyway, some clarification. Everyone agrees that these arenāt like any of the gods we recognize. They donāt quite match any of our religions (and boy did that infuriate Lanceās grandmother), and they werenāt like Zeus, or Anubis, or Odin, or any others we know of from legends. In fact, theyāre more like the monsters of myths.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā And even further, theyāre absolute dicks.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā With all their incredible power, they thought it would be prudent to impart some of their stupid gifts to us mere mortals, and in the process, they ruined Lanceās life.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā See, only a small percentage of humans were given a gift. Most of them were young adults, some teenagers. Supposedly some children will manifest as they mature, but the short of it was, Lance was the only one in his family to get one. Most of his family tried to be understanding and sympathetic about it, but some were jealous, others wary, and all of them were making Lance feel more alone than ever before.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā At least his best friend kinda understood. Heād been blessed by the shifter-god (as in god-who-can-shift, not god-that-shifters-worship). A fairly common gift by now, but still a useful one. Not to mention how cool it was. But, Hunkās girlfriend Shay had been blessed, too, and was currently in attendance at the new Supernatural school with Hunk and Lance. Since the first day, the perfect couple had easily been able to make friends with the other students in their sections, even their dorms. Most still startled around Lance, but he was becoming used to that. One of these exceptions was a girl named Pidge. Well, her name was actually Katie, but she preferred to go by Pidge. She and her brother were geniuses, so they were great with Hunk and Shay, and tolerant of Lance, but heād take what he could get.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Besides, Pidge and her brother Matt ā technopaths ā were almost impossible to mock, because they were actually childhood ā best ā friends with Lanceās roommates, the hotshot vampire powerhouse couple of the school. Usually, students were grouped by their gift; in the dorm, they were for their comfort and safety. So far, the three of them were the exception. Of course, because the gods apparently hated Lance, he was one of those, because he was one of the only non-vamps in the dorms. Due to the nature of their existence, people naturally sough to avoid vampires, and they responded by forming their own nests, once again, carefully excluding Lance. Because even at a school of freaks, weirdos, and the powerful, Lance was of the worst.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Lance was a necromancer.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā A surprise to his family and to Hunk, because they always referred to him as a sunshine boy, always commented on his happy, goofy nature and attitude. Even with the dark nature of the gift, Lance remained his cheerful self ā for the most part ā for the first few months, but the constant abuse and isolation was starting to wear on him, and Lance knew it. He just couldnāt tell if he cared. No one else did, right? His old friends were having the time of their lives. Even Hunk had yet to see past the mask Lance had taken on. All the other students were content to ignore or mock him, and even Lotor, the only other necromancer at the school, was enjoying the process of crushing Lance, both in the classroom and out. Lance was barely surviving.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā And honestly, he probably wouldnāt be if it werenāt for his roommates. As fuckinā weird as they were, even for vampires they had been kinder and more aware of Lance and his challenges than anyone else lately. When Lance was too drained physically and emotionally to go down for dinner, Keith brough t tray of food up to him, full of only human food and none of the blood the vampires included in their meals. And Lance hadnāt missed how Shiro sometimes was there to help Lance to and from classes, cheerfully carrying on a very one-sided conversation and effectively ensuring that Lance didnāt feel alone all the time. And even when they were alone in their dorm room studying, both of them did their level best to keep Lance included in their discussions. They refused to let him hide in his bedroom, which he had all to himself, as the previously assigned roommate refused to live with a necromancer. Instead, they dragged him out to the common room to study and then watch movies with them. Literally, Keith dragged him kicking and screaming that first time.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Sometimes, Lance wished that they werenāt so determined to draw him out and be his friend. Like now, for example.
Sometimes, Shiro will announce a mandatory movie night and sleepover ā seriously, having primarily nocturnal roommates was weird ā and Lance always tried to duck into his room. Or sneak back out once they were wholly engaged in whatever movie they chose.
āLance,ā Shiro spoke with utter calm, but Lance froze as if heād been threatened. While Shiro didnāt look up from his movie, Keith did, making direct contact with Lance, who bit his lip and glanced at the den and then looked back at Keith. Keith raised an eyebrow. āBat got your tongue, Lance?ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā It took him a minute, but Lance found his voice. Not that it was gonna do him any good. āUmmmā¦ I justā¦ have some homework to finish, soā¦ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āThat would mean that when you said you were done at dinner, you lied,ā Keith observed. Shiro reached for the remote. āPull it out here, then, I have some reading I could do, too.ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Lance looked horrified at the thought of ruining their plans. He floundered, āNo! Uh, you donāt have to do that! I can study on my own, itās fine!ā But Shiro was grabbing their books now, Keith watching Lance carefully. āOkay! Fine! I donāt have any homework!ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Shiro brightened immediately. āGood! Then cāmere so we can finish the movie; I wanna see how it ends!ā How the hell could this giant, terrifying creature of the night be such a pup???
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Lance managed a weak smile at the sight, āWell, Iāve already seen it, so Iāll probably just go to bed, but you guys should definitely stay and watch!ā He shot a wary look at Keith, who was shaking his head.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āLance, youāre just as nocturnal as we are. Nearly all your classes are at night. And youāre a night owl, anyway. So whatās the big deal?ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āDonāt you guys ever get sick of it?ā Lance finally burst out.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Shiro and Keith looked at him cautiously. āWhat are you talking about, Lance?ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āCome on, Shiro, look at me! The Reaper and all that bull, thereās no way you guys actually want to spend time with me! And even if you did, donāt you ever want just some time with Keith? Well, Iām trying to give that to you, except you guys wonāt let me just leave so that I can leave you to it, and oh my God you probably hate me so much for taking up so much of your time, and I canāt believe I did this to you Iām so sorry, I-I just, I canāt, ugh, just let meāā But before Lance could dart for the door, Keith caught hold of his wrist, his own abilities coming in handy to keep ahold of Lance, even as the pictures on the walls and lamps rattled dangerously as Lanceās own powers spiked, black fog seeping out from beneath him. Lanceās eyes were tightly squeezed shut, and Shiro was careful as he approached and put a hand on Lanceās arm.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āLance. We like spending time with you, promise.ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā But Lance just shook his head, sobs now wracking his whole body. Keith let out a soft noise, drawing Lance close enough that he could wrap him up in a hug. Shiro enveloped them both, wrapping his arms around Keithās back, and protecting Lanceās back as he did so. This close, Shiro didnāt need heightened senses to hear Keith whispering reassurances in Lanceās ear, and Shiro let himself join, knowing from past experience that the way his chest ārumbledā would help to soothe Lance further, and soon enough, Lance was swaying as his exhaustion hit him. Keith and Shiro worked together to maneuver Lance down the hall and into their own bed. They knew that this wasnāt going to solve all of their problems, but at least they could be there for their brilliant, bright boy tonight.

*Slides in on a office chair* Now that you shared some of your HaaH headcanons for Shiro and Hunk, can you do Lance and Lotor?
Didnāt want to post these until I finally had some time to update them a bit and trim out spoilers, but I got a second last night, so here you are:
HaaH Lance and Lotor headcanons:
(Under the cut to save everyoneās dash)
First, a warning: Neither one of these charactersā backstories or plot event headcanons remotely line up with the show, one because I originally wrote most of this stuff around the time season 2-3 was being released and two, because I stopped watching Voltron after season 6 and have no intention of watching the rest of the show due to my dislike for the directions the writing took. I went back and updated some stuff, such as the names of some of Lanceās siblings, to more closely match what came later in the showā¦ but for the restā¦ Iām just gonna do my own thing and pretend canon does not exist.
Lance:
- The literal definition of ārich as fuck.ā When relaxations on economic policy were passed in Cuba that increased opportunities for private business, Lanceās grandfather made a solid deal for three massive sugar refineries. Today, artisanal coffee houses across the world utilize the sugar refined in Lanceās familyās factories.
- Grew up in a giant villa on the peninsula just outside the town of Varadero, on a sprawling property that included a long stretch of beachfront and individual bungalows for visiting family members and the familyās several live-in staff members.
- The whole family is incredibly down to earth despite this. Lanceās aunt and grandmother insist on having a hand in every family meal, Lanceās parents always make time to be involved in the childrenās activities, and Lance was taught from a very young age never to take advantage of people, regardless of their position in the world.
- Lance is the baby of his immediate family by almost ten years. He was an accident that occurred after Lanceās mother believed she was too old to become pregnant. Of course his parents never treated Lance like an accident and loved him, but still, Lance has never been able to shake the idea that he wasnāt plannedāand therefore he wasnāt wanted.
- He has four older siblings, two sisters and two brothers.
- All of Lanceās siblings are extremely successful in their careers. Lanceās oldest sibling, his sister Veronica, is a captain of the Cuban Navy and commands the impressive warship Audaz. Lanceās second oldest sibling, his brother Yuniel, is a decorated conservational ecologist working to protect Matanzasā native forests. Lanceās third sibling, his brother, Marco, is a famous solo folk musician who made it big in Cuba. Rachel, Lanceās closest sibling, runs an immersion-based cultural heritage museum that preserves the rich and complicated history of Cuba and its people.
- In shortāLance grew up surrounded by the rampant success of his older siblings, watching as they excelled at everything they pursuedāwhich just bred a greater and greater sense of insecurity in him, as he feared he would never be able to measure up.
- On Lanceās eighth birthday, in an attempt to cheer up his very depressed youngest son, Lanceās father dragged the familyās telescope down to the beach so that they could watch a space shuttle launching from the cape in Florida. At first Lance couldnāt work up the slightest interest, but when he finally saw the huge plume of the shuttle, arcing off into the unknown depths of space, he had a Momentā¢. Lance knew, right then and there, exactly what he was going to do with his life, something that none of his siblings had ever achieved: he was going to go into space and explore worlds unknown.
- Lance decided that he had, absolutely HAD, to go to Galaxy Garrison when he grew up. This part worried his parents, who pointed out that Garrison was not only in another country but also a solely English-speaking school and extremely competitive. Nonetheless, Lance was determined that he would not settle for anything less than the absolute best.
- Was totally that space obsessed kid. Still thinks Black Holes are the coolest thing in the universe. His parents bought so much āAstronautā ice cream that they probably kept that entire industry afloat.
- Lance attended Garrisonās summer Astrocamp in Arizona when he was nine. Quickly made friends with his cabin-mate, Hyrum Tava. The nickname āHunkā came about from a slip-up when Lance tried to compare his new friend to one of his favorite American cartoon characters, the Incredible Hulk.
- Even after leaving the Astrocamp, Lance and Hunk stayed close friends, exchanging frequent emails and phone calls, which helped Lance stay on top of memes popular trends back in the states.
- Shiro was Lanceās cabin leader at the Astrocamp, and his kindness and exciting stories about actually visiting space(!!) made a huge impression on Lance. Lanceā¦ may or may not have had a celebrity shrine to Shiro made of photos and news clippings taped to his wall for several years. Whatever, every kid does it and he took it down eventually, gosh!
- Identifies as bisexual, but has never successfully dated anyone, male or female. Due to several bad experiences and close calls, Lance doesnāt talk about his sexuality or express any attraction to men except around people he is extremely comfortable with. Hunk has known for years, of course. (In fact, it was Lanceās struggle with his feelings that helped Hunk develop strong sympathy for LGBT people, despite the fact that his religion is very against it.)
- Never had a real kiss. Might be just a tiny bit desperate to have a real first kiss.
- Also might buy a bit too much into the idea of needing to be stereotypically attractive to fit in. Although his nightly beauty regime is now a comforting routine, it originally stemmed from Lance being extremely self-conscious about his looks. Heās more comfortable about his body than he used to be, but he still frequently compares himself negatively against others; do you know what kind of hell it is to have to share a locker room with people like Shiro?
- Cries at the drop of a hat. Sad book? Sad movie? Abandoned kitten? Dropped something on his toe? Tears times ten thousand. Lance was never pressured by his family to āman up;ā in fact, he was always encouraged to empathize, so Lance is extremely sensitive to othersā feelings. (He and Hunk are a great fit in this regard.) He can perceive even minute changes in peopleās emotions and is always ready to cheer up people who are down.
- He canāt read Keith for crap though. Not really his fault. Keithās a literal alien.
- Lanceās extreme empathy actually backfires on him. Because being sensitive to others is second nature to him, itās often hard for Lance to remember that not everyone is as perceptive as he is. Lance has, many times, mistaken the other paladinsā obliviousness for indifference. Everyone on the ship cares deeply about Lance and would never want him to feel bad about himselfābut not everyone on the ship is perceptive enough to notice when Lanceās insecurities are affecting him.
- Wasnāt put in the cargo pilot classes at Garrison because of his flight test scoresāmost green cadets have zero flight experience and all do pretty badly at first. Lance was placed in cargo class because he scored too high on a combat sensitivity test, indicating that he was a poor fit mentally for becoming a soldier. Fighting monstrous looking aliens is one thing, but Lance would have coped very, very badly if heād ever been required to kill another human being.
- Struggled to fit in at Garrison. After the crushing disappointment of ending up in cargo class, Lance also dealt with a lot of people treating him like an outsider because he was an international student. āWhy is someone from Cuba trying to join the U.S. military? Are you a spy?ā
- Couple that with the complicated student visa process and how his status as an international student might affect his ability to take part in Garrison-sanctioned internships and cross-border activities, and Lance felt utterly alienated at Garrison in his first few months.
- Mayā¦ or may not have done exactly what his parents taught him not to do by looking for a scapegoat to take out his frustrations on. Keith, the lone wolf, ace pilot pretty boy who was too cool to even talk to the rest of the cadets (really thought he was too good to even make eye contact with Lance, huh?!) was an obvious target. Keith had every single thing that Lance had ever wanted in his whole lifeāthe combat class, the talent, the prestige, the respect, the effortless looksāand he didnāt even seem happy to have it!
- Lance had never hated anyone before in his entire life, but Lance hated KeithāKeith basically came to stand in for every obstacle in Lanceās way, every mocking insult thrown Lanceās way, every harsh reminder from the professors that heād never even be close to good enough, never measure up when someone like that existedā¦ Lance started to honestly believe that the only way heād ever be able to achieve his entire life goal was if Keith was taken out of the pictureāsomething that proved unfortunately true when Lance was bumped up to combat class the moment Keith went missing from Garrison.
- Lance never actually said any of this stuff to Keithās face before Keith left Garrison (Lance dreaded his parents finding out heād been rude), but he would shit-talk Keith to anyone who would listen, a bad habit that was reinforced by people actually accepting Lance more when he started gossiping and spreading rumors than when heād just tried to be genuinely nice.
- Even though heād like to repair his relationship with Keith now that theyāre teammates, Lance has no idea how to do that after so much time has passed. He really has no clue how to treat Keith normally after building him up into such a bitter rival. Itāsā¦ a work in progress.
- A big fan of RPG games and roleplaying. Definitely gets the most in-character when it comes to Monsters and Mana. His favorite thing about meeting new cultures is discovering nifty space items that look like key items from video games. Used to play old school RPGs with his cousins every afternoon. Playing with Pidge is extremely nostalgic for him.
- Has a host of other hobbies that donāt get much use inspace but are nevertheless impressive: he can surf, dive, and was part of a traditional dance group all the up until he left for Garrison. He doesnāt tend to think much of his hobbies as theyāre not exactly practical skills you need every day in a space war, but the other members of Team Voltron are quietly impressed whenever theyāre reminded of the cool things Lance can do.
- Lance has the strongest bond with his lion of any of the paladins. His connection with Blue is so innate that he can actually activate Blueās abilities from outside his lion.
- The first one of the paladins to transform his bayard and the only one whose bayard can take three forms. And no, none of the three is a sword because what was the point of that, even??? Lance can wield his standard blaster, a long rifle, and dual pistols. The strength of theshots from Lanceās bayard can be consciously controlledāhis thoughts and intentions determine whether a shot has the strength to kill or merely stun.
- Lanceās incredible aim isnāt a natural talent. Actually heās spent hours and hours in a shooting range he found in the castle, working on perfecting his shot. Just like the gladiator levels on the training deck, the targets in the range keep getting harder and harder, but Lance is progressing very well. No one but Coran knows that Lance has been training so hard with his bayard, since Lance desperately wants to pretend his skill is all natural and has sworn Coran to secrecy. Coran covers for him by pretending heās sent Lance off on absurd cleaning missions all the time.
- Is 1000% Coranās favorite of the paladins. Coran wonāt even try to lie if asked. Although Coran has never expressed it out loud, he sees Lance as an example of the brave, kind-hearted son he would have hoped to raiseāif his son had survived the war. (On Lanceās part, although heās also never shared this, Coran reminds him very much of his beloved uncle, who passed away when Lance was very young, but whom he still remembers well and extremely fondly.)
- After his uncle passed away, Lanceās aunt moved in with Lanceās parents permanently, and Lance essentially helped to raise his two very young cousins, Nadia and Silvio. Lance does have very good experience with childrenāunfortunately for him, what human children respond well to doesnāt always work for Galra kids! Ā Ā Ā Ā
Lotor:
- Has not spent 10,000 years kicking about the universe. Weāre not doing that weird āIf heās immortal because of the rift creatures then how come his governess is still alive?ā plot hole song and dance routine from the actual show. Lotor was born after the war decimated the Alteans 10,000 years ago, but due to Haggarās condition (aka being, you know, dead), he was essentially unable to live on his own and was placed in cryostasis very shortly after being born.
- Roughly 20 years before the discovery of the Blue Lion on Earth, Haggar used advancements in quintessence manipulation technology to successfully revive the infant Lotor. But she didnāt wake him for no reasonāshe has a very specific intention for her son, a long endgame plan, of which Lotor and even Zarkon are currently unaware.
- Weāre also not doing that dumb āHow could Haggarāthe only remotely Altean-looking being in all of Zarkonās presenceāpossibly be my mother?ā plot from the show either. Lotor is aware that Haggar is his mother, although he has never been able to infiltrate her research facilities and therefore has no idea how an Altean scientist ended up where she did, looking like she did, and siding with the Galra against her own people.
- Because his parentsā past and his own origins are such a mystery, Lotor is obsessed with learning the truth of the war, the Alteans, and every hidden secret from that time period, including Voltron and the mysterious ārift.ā He devours any information he can get on this period of history, and especially on Alteans, voraciously.
- But even though heāll take any pieces of information he can get, Lotorās real favorite obsession is mythology. Heās a deep lover of folklore and fairytales, bestiaries and local legends, and more than one assassin has traded a good story in exchange for having his life spared. Lotor may or may not hunt for space cryptids in his spare time. However, no single legend occupies Lotorās mind as much as the legend of the mythical realm of Oriande, home of the ancient Altean alchemists. As practical as he tries to appear, Lotor has never given up his deep-down childish wish to be the one who finds the promised land of Oriande and prove it is real. But when he thinks backā¦ Where was it that he first heard about Oriande, again? Who told himā¦?
- That entire thing with the hidden Altean colonies is justā¦ not going to happen. The writers were bad and they should feel bad. Although Lotor has looked, after 10,000 years and plenty of centuries of hiding any Altean connections, distinguishing those who still have Altean blood has become essentially impossible.
- Part of the reason Lotor has looked for Alteans is that he was born with a bizarre grab-bag of Altean instincts and abilities and no guidance on how to deal with them, because heās certainly not going to reveal to Haggar that he has unexplained talents like precognition and the ability to speak to planets. Growing up with half of his bloodline extinct has been ROUGH on Lotor.
- Speaking of growing upā¦ Even though he remains the crown prince on official record, Lotor took the first opportunity he could to leave his parentsā sphere of influence, and he has not physically been back to Galra Central Command in more than ten years.
- Lotor is effectively a universal wanderer. Aboard his personal ship the Urbanus (a Destroyer-class star cruiser which has been heavily modified and improved by Lotor himself), Lotor and his generals travel wherever they like, both within the Galra Empire and outside it, dodging Haggarās frequent attempts to re-exert control over Lotor and even more frequent assassination and kidnapping attempts from Zarkonās enemies.
- Although Lotor has a very specific goal in mind, progress on this goal has been slow and painstaking, and heās often left waiting for the next bare bones clue to chase after; this has resulted in the young prince having an unfortunate abundance of free time, which is dangerous for everyone involved. In between progress on his mysterious lifeās goal, Lotor and his generals frequently get into trouble with small planets, local governments, militaries both official and off-the-books, giant monsters, and at least two hundred museum curators. They may or may not be wanted for grave-robbing in 13 different star systems.
- Basically heās space Indiana Jones, if Indiana Jones was still 20 and also purple and also not being paid enough to be a good guy.
- All that said, as much of a devil-may-care rogue as heād like to be seen, Lotor did spend all of his childhood under the thumb of the empireās brutal authoritarian dictators, and he is therefore every inch a crown prince; as befitting one of his stature, he speaks eight languages fluently, flawlessly matches his formal dress to the occasion, knows exactly which piece of silverware to use when, can engage in political battles of wits and diplomatic machinations with the best of them, and has been training in armed combat since he was three years old. Lotorās impeccable manners and steely leadership ability were literally beaten into him, to the point that now, even among trusted allies, he sometimes finds it difficult to turn off his cold, calculated princely persona.
- Not that his generals really let him get away with that kind of thing for long. Only those who have lived with multiple older sisters can truly understand the constant state of teasing and mortifying blackmail that Lotor lives in. On official record, Lotorās generals are a crack team of terrifying bodyguards; in practice, theyāre more likely to be dragging Lotor for all heās worth than rescuing him. They might keep up formal appearances in front of others, but theyāre effectively a close-knit family behind the scenes.
- Itās not a coincidence that all of Lotorās generals are women; besides generally being awful, most Galra men make Lotor uncomfortable. From a human standpoint, Lotor is ridiculously tall and powerful; but from a Galra standpoint, Lotor is a thin, unhealthy-looking thing whose stature doesnāt command authority or respect in the slightest. Itās exhausting feeling like you have to constantly prove yourself, so Lotor prefers to spend time with a group that doesnāt invite negative comparison.
- However, it should be noted that a Galra man having only female friends has completely different connotations than a human man having only female friendsāGalra women are, on the whole, considered more aggressive, bloodthirsty, and over-bearing than Galra men, so any Galra man who would choose to surround himself with that many women must either be out of his mind or incredibly badass.
- When asked what itās like to live with four beautiful women, Lotor is basically ĀÆ\_(ć)_/ĀÆ personified. Despite living together for years, none of the generals are romantically interested in Lotor and heās not romantically interested in any of them.
- Many people have incorrectly assumed that Lotor and Axca are a pair, but Lotor helped Axca escape from a slave colony and she will never let another man touch her in her life. Axca is extremely grateful and loyal to Lotor, but given that Axca was Lotorās first real friend, heās just as grateful to her.
- If you think Iām killing off Narti, youāre out of your mind.
- Despite the fact that Lotor does not feel connected to the Galra Empire or the Galra as a whole, heās somewhat more traditional and more likely to conform to Galra social standards than he wants to admit (even to himself). He insists that he has no interest in upholding the classic values of the Galra or meeting their expectations for how a prince should behaveābut in truth, itās impossible to fully kill that deep-down desire to just fit in. When push comes to shove, Lotor always finds himself falling in line with the Galraās oldest and most deeply ingrained beliefs.
- With Lance in the āhas never had a real kissā club. Is not with Lance in the āwants a real kissā club. Lotor is actually uncomfortable with being touched by strangers (36 assassination attempts will do that to you) and doesnāt make real friends, let alone anything closer, remotely easily. Some people are open books; Lotor is that one book from Harry Potter that bites peopleās fingers off when they try to open it. Once youāre in his inner-circle, heāll let you hang all over him, but before that, the space bubble is ten feet in every direction.
- Doesnāt actually put any special effort into his appearance. He just Looks Like Thatā¢.
- In fact, he actually kind of hates that stupid cowlick hair thatās always in his face but no matter how many times he cuts it off or slicks it back, it just keeps falling right back in his eyes. Heās basically given up at this point.
- His swordās name is Eris and it was actually forged in the heart of a dying star.
- Kova the space cat hates Lotor. Lotor hates Kova. Itās a mutually antagonistic relationship. Somehow though, Lotor never makes any effort to get rid of Kova and Kova never takes the opportunity to leave. No one else understands it either, especially since Lotor gets along great with basically every other animal he meets.
- Heās not a pacifist by any means, but he is painfully practical and knows that, on occasion, sparing the life of oneās enemy nets more gain than indiscriminately crushing opponents beneath his heel. More manipulative than outright aggressive, heās easily capable of twisting even the worst of situations to his advantage. Has an unfortunate tendency to be overly cunningāsometimes the tricks and twists he comes up with are unnecessarily full of flourish just because he thinks manipulating people like pieces in a board game is extremely entertaining. Riddles and mind games are Lotorās favoriteāthe more convoluted, the better.
- Although most people refer to him by the basic āPrince Lotorā (Lotori Ahn in Galra), Lotorās full name and official title is Lotori Kir Ahnja Avel iāya ne Daibazaal, His Royal Highness Prince Lotor of the First Star. As the emperors and empresses of the Galra are said to be physical representations of the goddess, the firstborn children of emperors/empresses are always called āthe first star,ā after the supposed first creation of the goddess.
- Extremely competitive, but mostly about weird thingsālike sure heās going to win if you challenge him to a swordsmanship duel, but challenge him to a staring contest? Your eyes will rot out of your head before this boy will blink. Do not think he will let you beat him in a spelling bee. More than once the generals have had to drag him away from getting involved in the bizarre competitions of the alien cultures they come into contact with. He was 1000% ready to learn to knit eight-armed sweaters with Rikrik fur, thank you. Would totally take up pig-farming JUST to win an Earth state fair.
- Likes to collect interesting artifacts and trinkets of lost civilizations by force if necessary. His ship is basically a floating museum at this point. The generals are starting to worry that theyāre going to have add a whole ānother deck for all the war prizes Lotor wins himself. Lotorās gathering hobby extends to games tooāheās a big fan of games that involve sets of items, like Renni, the Galra collectible card game. Would 110% be that Magic the Gathering nerd back on earth.
- In terms of other interests, Lotor is the picture definition of a Renaissance man. Although heās not a flawless genius savant in every field, he is wicked smart and has studied a vast array of subjects; heās a capable engineer, a skilled mathematician, a deft philosopher, a good scientist, and extremely well-read, and he is not going tolet you forget any of those things at any point in time. Lotor is always going to be better than you, please just accept your fate.
- Art isā¦ another story. He might be able to sketch detailed architectural blueprints without breaking a sweat but ask him to draw a dog and youāre going to be in for some trouble.
And thatās more than enough for now I think! XD

Piety, Control, Perception for all 4 characters!
Sorry we had some TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES with getting this post out the door.
asks still open for this prompt list
PIETY : How does religion affect your characterās lifestyle? CONTROL : What is your characterās view of fate/destiny? PERCEPTION : Does your character think in the short-term/on impulse, or do they think about the long-term future?
Deidre Hunt
Piety: After becoming Hydaelynās chosen weapon Deidre pretty much lost her faith in the 12, and no longer does anything notable regarding the practice. However, due to being from the Twelveswood and being a White Mage, she still has regard for the Elementals. Before she joined the Scions and the reality of the situation set in her Patron was Oschon, the moon she was born under. As she grew up she got more desperate to escape home and travel, with adventuring not really her Ideal but more so the only option she could imagine. When she was 16 her father found the bag she had stashed away, and they had a fight. In the aftermath she tattooed Oschonās symbol on each of her inner ankles, permanent prayers to broaden her horizons.Ā
Ā Control: Deidre believes in fate and destiny as constructs of Hydaelyn; as the Mothercrystal influencing the trajectory of her life and her major landing points. This is especially prominent after they go through Emetās recreation of the Final Days, and Zenos points out they are going through it together, just as before. (They being him, Deidre, Haurchefant, Caelen, and Ryne.) The fact that the sundered versions of Cassandra and those who supported her in her search for another solution are all together again? Deidre refuses to believe itās a coincidence.
Perception: Deidre has always had to think in the long term for the sake of others. Planning for the sake of others is how she tends to go. Even when she does make āselfishā decisions, they either go into the long term or she makes sure not to leave things undone; for example planning to go to the conjurers guild before getting into any real adventuring, or waiting until Ultima was destroyed and Thancred had been saved to make her (unsuccessful) break away from the Scions. Even decisions that seem impulsive (remaining a cat in Il Mheg for a bit instead of Immediately seeking help) are actually thought out, though a few arenāt really (Hello DRK class). She thinks for the long term, and she plans for it, especially when the long term is going to go badly.Ā
Caelen Hunt
Piety: Like his sister he has a regard for the Elementals, but other than some sailor superstitions heās picked up in Limsa heās not exactly a faithfully religious person. Heās not one for prayer, but he is still culturally raised in the Eorzean faith. Itās unlikely that they had a church where they grew up, but I HC that there are a lot of folk songs depicting the Twelve and their stories that they were raised with, and that he could still play if asked.
Control: Caelen didnāt put much stock into fate or destiny until Deidre pointed out what I put into her paragraph for this question. He doesnāt really think of anything as what someone is Meant to do, you either do it or you donāt, and thatās that. Theyāre choices. He ran away to Limsa to become a sailor, but was turned away because he was 12, and joined the rogueās guild for a time instead. He doesnāt think itās fate or destiny that he decided to go back to Carvallain when heād gotten older just because it ended up with him reconnecting with his sister, they could have easily remained oblivious to one another. He could have never been involved in any of her life after he ran away. He likes life better the way it is, but he thinks of things as one decision away from ending up totallyĀ different, and thatās not really fate.
Perception: Caelen is generally more impulsive. He is good for short term solutions, which is why he works well with Alphinaud, who thinks like Deidre. His impulsive (less planned out) decisions far outweigh his long term decisions. This is a boy who, due to a nightmare about Deidre being killed by a dragon, snuck into Ishgard to check on her. No thought to where he was going to stay after that, or what heād do if he got caught. He also decides to part with the Krakens in Hingashi so that he can help the party come to an agreement with the Confederacy, when they need to. How? Well heāll figure it out when it happens. His ability to long term plan is based specifically around the subject of farming, which helps the Crystarium a fair bit, but thatās kind of where it ends lol.
Bāsahla Pahsh
Piety: Bāsahla is a Seeker, dedicated to Azeyma. She prays at sunrise and looks to the goddess for guidance on her path, believing that Azeyma nudges her in the directions of people she can help bring justice to. She does not believe she doles out divine justice on behalf of the goddess however, mostly that she is guided to people she is capable of helping. A lot of opening level side quests in Thanalan are good examples of this sort of work.
Control: The idea of fate an destiny makes Bāsahla particularly upset due to the circumstances that led to her being an adventurer and thus joining the Scions. The thought that the slow dying out of her tribe from territorial disputes with the U, Amaljan raids, and the plummeting amount of resources in the Sagolii due to Dalamud and the following Calamity, was all fateĀ just to put herĀ in the correct life position to become the Warrior of Light, is just too cruel for her to bear.Ā
Perception: Bāsahla also thinks on the long term, but more emotionally than tactically. The decision that best showcases this is when she discovers her pregnancy after the attack on the waking sands. She keeps it a secret, which is a long term decision rather than a short term one, because with her health history she does not expect to remain so, and she wishes to avoid the extended grief that would come from the Scions also expecting and then loosing with her. When Bāvalia is not only born but also survives, she quickly plans the long term for that, by naming Haurchefant as Bāvaliaās Warden and second guardian, were anything to happen to her in battle.Ā
Philomena de Arboraux
Piety: Another Gridanian White Mage. Though Nophica and Halone are bitter rivals, Philomena and her brother would probably pay tribute to both goddesses, due to their split heritage between their Ishgardian mother and Gridanian father. Being a healer, Philomena would most likely favor Nophica, though as a member of the Warrior of Lightās regular party a prayer to the war goddess wouldnāt hurt. She also has faith in the Mothercrystalās protection, but does not have a habit of praying to Hydaelyn until the scions start being called to the First.
Control: She doesnāt exactly believe in fateĀ as much as she believes herself to be guided by Hydaelyn, which she does not perceive negatively. Following that guidance was her decision, not Hydaelynās. The Goddess may have put it into motion so that the members of the FC came to be in the correct places, or she may have chosen those with the Echo becauseĀ they were in the correct places. Of course, none of them can be sure. Philomena thinks it best not to dwell on it too much. Theyāre all choosing to save people anyway, why make a fuss about how you got here?
Perception: Philomena isnāt a hugeĀ planner, something Iām realizing is a bit of a funny parallel between her and Caelen because theyāre both OCs that I have end up in a relationship with Alphinaud (Different Universes, Philomena is Bāsahlaās continuity alone). She tends to see what pieces she has at her disposal, and arrange them all as situations arise, rather than plan for situations ahead of time. Sort of like collecting materials and thenĀ making a project, rather than buying materials with a project in mind.Ā
Iām sorry this took four days to answer, Anon, I hope you see it.

Survey #323
ādehumanized upon a shellĀ /Ā we came to bleed it dryĀ /Ā obsessed with divine wealthĀ /Ā divide and multiplyā
Have you ever drawn on someoneās face while they were sleeping? No. Would you scuba dive in shark infested waters if you had the chance? No thanks. What is your favorite slow song? There are so many, but one of the slowest and most beloved of mine is "Obstacles" by Syd Matters. It gives me goosebumps without fail. It's one song I know I want at my hypothetical wedding. If there were aliens on earth, would you be afraid? I mean, yeah. I'd want to know their intentions. If your best friend died, would you be able to speak at their funeral? It'd be extremely difficult, but if I had any say in it, I absolutely would. Do you enjoy going through old pictures? Sometimes. Other times it causes too much pain, depending on the pictures, of course. Do you tend to have a lot of drama in your life? Definitely not. My life is painfully uneventful. Whenās the last time someone was disappointed in you? I don't know. Do you have a house phone? No. Which fast food place do you eat at the most? McDonald's. Have you ever met someone on the Internet in real life? Yep. Whatās your favorite color to wear? Black. Do you like being in pictures? No. Do you travel a lot? Essentially never, even though I'd love to. Do you play any sports? No. Do you like pickles? Yesssss. How many times have you been kicked out of a store? Never. Is there things youāve told someone that youāve NEVER told anyone else? Probably. When was the last time you had alcohol? My birthday dinner last month. Are you one to often make typos? No, except when I'm texting. I have autocorrect on for a reason. On a hot day, would you rather prefer ice cream or a popsicle? Ice cream. Have you ever wanted to get drunk and get your mind off everything? Yes, but I just didn't want to drink anymore at one point. I'm far from a lightweight, apparently. Have you played cards recently? No. Is there a band you like with amazing music but a bad vocalist? Mother Mother immediately comes to mind, but not the main singer; he's great. The woman who occasionally joins in is fucking horrendous. Like, it hurts my ears. Is there a certain song you like to headbang to? I don't and never have really headbanged, surprisingly. It's a sure-fire way to make me dizzy. Anything you might be giving up on soon? I hope not... Sometimes I feel like it's time with photography, but I just. Can't. Have you ever captured a moth? I've raised a caterpillar into one before, then of course let it go. Is there a band/artist who has strange lyrics but you love them anyway? Otep, noteably. When was the last time you wore earrings? It's been a long time. How many pairs of heels do you own? I don't think I have any. When was the last time you changed your picture on Facebook? Uhhhh it's been at the very least a month, but I know more. Would you consider yourself to be physically strong? Absolutely not, especially my legs. I struggle to fucking walk because they're so weak. Have you ever painted a piece of furniture? Yes, actually. I helped Jason paint his shelf black. Do you have a really fat cat? No, we never have. We've always been good about keeping our pets at a healthy weight. Do your initials spell a word? No. When was the last time you went to a playground? A year or so ago when I was taking pictures of someone's son, as well as just general family photos. That same family just had another baby the other day. Have you ever made a business card for yourself? No. Do you have a favorite curse word in a different language? No. Are there any recipes you have memorized? No. Do you know your multipication times tables? Lol not most of them, no... It's been way too long. Do you have a favorite font on the computer? Of the basic ones, probably Garamond. Are you good at creating logos? *shrugs* I've only ever really made my photography watermarks, and I only JUST made one I like pretty well. How about catch phrases? I don't make those. Have you ever been severely burned? Not severely, no. Did you ever dream that you had a baby? I've actually had numerous dreams where I was pregnant, but I don't THINK I've had one where the baby was born yet. Do you or anyone you know have a rabbit? No. What was the weirdest thing you ever saw cross the road? Hm, nothing too weird, I think. Last song you got stuck in your head? "ALTĆR" by 3TEETH. Last song you listened to? ^ Favorite movie quote? I don't know. Maybe Rafiki's quote about the past hurting, but you should take that opportunity to learn. Favorite lyric? That is impossible. There are so, so very many that just like slather me in goosebumps. What magazine are you an avid reader to? None. Have you ever gone a full day without interacting with another person? I have. How many relationships have you been in that lasted less than a year? Four. Have you ever been significantly more physically fit than you are now? Man, take me the hell back to my WiiFit days. I was pretty damn fit. The last time I did it, it was seriously alarming how much I struggled doing things that were once pretty effortless. When growing up, did you parents keep the house very tidy? "Very" seems a bit too much, but Mom definitely kept it in order. How many watches do you own? None. Should teenagers be allowed to have their cell phones with them in class? Yes. Emergencies happen. Do you have any gay relatives? Yes; my mom has a cousin who's gay. Have you unfollowed, deleted, or blocked anyone on social media recently? Not recently, no. If so, what was the reason? ^ Whatās the biggest financial mistake youāve ever made? Oh, y'know, dropping out of college three fucking times. Once I pay my own bills and I truly understand finances, that's going to fucking wreck me. Do you like metal music? Fuuuuuuuuuuuuck yeah. If so, what sub-genres of metal do you like the best? Heavy and symphonic. Who was the last person you sincerely thanked? My mom for bringing home lunch recently. Have you ever been in a relationship where there was a large difference in maturity levels? No. Whatās the longest youāve ever stayed as a guest at someoneās house? Maybe like a month when I was technically homeless? How bad was your acne when you were a teenager? It was preeeetty rough. Do you like strawberry shortcake? No. Whatās the last you got out of the freezer? A microwavable breakfast bowl. Do you go on the computer or watch TV more? Guess. Explain why you are single: Because I'm a very, very underdeveloped "adult" that has very little clue what she's doing. At my age, I and any potential partner should want someone with direction. What feature do you usually get most complimented on? My hair. Has anyone ever accused you of being gay? Well, I'm bi. I had this weird therapist once in middle school though who asked if I was a lesbian... Idk why she did? What Facebook groups have you found the most helpful? I'm in an advanced ball python husbandry group, and while a lot of people there are utter, degrading elitists, they do have valuable information. Did you name all of your stuffed animals and dolls? I sure did as a kid. What would you have your bridesmaids wear? Probably black dresses, and I think it'd be really cool if I were to marry a woman, the bridesmaids wear checkered Converses colored into a rainbow pattern, or something like that. Where do you want to go on your honeymoon? I think Alaska, if it was a good time to see the Northern Lights. Are you sick right now? No, thankfully. Do you feel loved? Yes. Do you like your butt? Why or why not? God no. I have such a flat ass. Are you ashamed of your faith? I'm assuming by this you mean religion, in which case, I don't have one and am not ashamed of that. Has anyone ever tried to force their beliefs on you? Yes. Have you ever personally been a victim of homophobia? Again, I'm bisexual. I have never had a personal act of homophobia inflicted upon me, though. Have you ever been accused of being homophobic? Yes, because I was for most of my life. Fucking repulsive to remember. "Repulsive" is much too gentle a word, but yeah. It is so, so embarrassing to recall myself ever believing it was wrong because my then-religion said no-no. Do you think youād be happier if you had a pet? I have two pets. I would be so, so lonely without any. :/ I've had pets my entire life. Who was the last person you went on a date with? Sara. How long has it been since that last time you went on a date? Like two or so years. Do you think babies are cute? They can be, but I usually don't find them all that cute, honestly. Especially newborns/very young infants. They're usually hideous. My youngest niece is actually the only newborn that I remember seeing that I thought was absolultely precious. What is your favorite style of pants? Ripped skinny jeans. Were you ever hospitalized as a little kid? No. Who was the last person who broke your heart? Jason. ^Do you still miss this person? I'm sure I always will to some degree. Do you have someone to talk to and share your secrets with? Sara more than anyone, but Mom, too. Is there someone you feel extra shy around? Just men in general. Have you been hurt more by friend break-ups or romantic break-ups? Romantic. Closest living thing to you? My snake's terrarium is against the opposite wall. She's in her hide. Would you rather drown or burn alive? Drown. You go unconscious first, so. And I'd assume it to be faster than burning alive. Also me no like hot. :'''( Who is the last person you got really pissed off with? My stepmother posted some ignorant bullshit on Facebook about how people blow out of proportion our "supposed" environmental crisis. I nearly deleted her right then and there. I take that shit seriously. Most of her beliefs drive me insane, honestly, but she's a wonderful person at heart, so I just bit my tongue. Who was the last member of the opposite sex you laid in a bed with? Girt. What type of sushi do you like to eat? Never tried it, don't want to. Was the last person you kissed physically attractive? Yes. Do you have any flowers in your room? No. Do you know anyone that owns horses? Yes. Well, I took pictures for her family, anyway. Do you know anyone who has road rage? Who? Jesus, yes. My little sister. Is your mom a big health freak or your dad? Or neither? Neither are "big" health freaks, especially not Dad when you consider he smokes and knows it'll be what kills him. My mom is diabetic though, so she's reasonably careful. Do you know anyone who wants to be the president one day? No. What kinds of chips are in the cupboards? We don't have any. Ma tries to keep snacks out of the house for both hers and my sake. If you were going out with your celebrity crush, what would you wear? OH BOY idk. I'd probably spend days planning the "perfect" thing. Do you have any friends who have naturally red hair? I do. Have you ever cried when a teacher retired? Yep, my band teacher. He was incredibly loved by literally everyone. Do you have your momās or dadās eyes? Neither's. They both have brown eyes. Whatās the best date movie? We gonna have a problem if you don't watch The Notebook w/ me if I have it on lmao. How long has your current best friend been your best friend? Many years now. (: Do you swear and yell while playing video games? I might swear under my breath, but I don't yell. Would you rather name your daughter Andrea or Eva? Andrea. If you were adopted, would you want to know? Yes. Do you know anyone who has grossly skinny eyebrows? I couldn't care less about someone's eyebrows. Do your pets chase after bugs? Oh yes, Roman certainly does. Whenās the last time you were so excited you couldnāt sleep? Why? Hmmm... this actually happened recently, but I don't remember why... What is your momās favorite movie? I don't know, actually. I think it's some romance one. What TV family reminds you of your own family? None, really. Do you know anyone who always looks perfect? Who? One of my best high school friends Alon was like... just always pristinely beautiful, it seemed like. I haven't seen many pictures of her lately, but I'm sure that hasn't changed. Has anyone you know ever pulled the fire alarm in school, joking around? I think so once, yes. Who was the main character in the last book you read? A dragon named Sunny. Who are the last people you saw kiss? On the lips, I'm sure it woulda been my sister and her husband. Would you rather look at clouds or stars? Clouds, I think. Well, it would depend on their design, I guess, and time of day. When you get married, who will be the maid of honor/best man? Probably my mom. Does your best friend get along with their parents? She has a wonderful relationship with them. Have you ever been in a wedding? What were you? I was the fat, hideous, crying bridesmaid. ;x; Are you purposely hiding something from someone? No. Whatās the most intimate thing youāve discussed with a stranger? My suicide attempt with doctors. What, if anything, do you substitute for fries? I always get fries. Have you ever been in a building that was on fire? No. Are you in an argument with anyone right now? No. Have you ever written a poem for someone? Yes. Whoās the last person who cussed you out in anger? My grandmother. Who is the person you are closest to that youāve meet online? Sara. Have you friended your parents on FB? Mom, yes. Dad doesn't have one. Whatās the last tourist area you visited? Chicago. Mice or roaches? Mice are precious, meanwhile I hate roaches. Did you give or get any Valentines this year? No. Well, Mom bought me and my sisters each a delicious candy apple, if that counts? Whatās your homepage? Google. Is there anyone whose grave you visit? No.

lily liveblogs BBC Atlantis 1x02, āA Girl By Any Other Nameā (first half)
I actually watched this months ago, but I got interrupted about halfway through, and then there was a global pandemic and I lost my groove. This got super-long, so Iām gonna post it in two parts.
Thanks to @girlwhowasntthere for her help in making sure I could see it, and also for pointing out that Ariadne draws a stone in the first episode (which I totally missed!) so she's not just resting on her privilege there. Good for her!
In the pilot, we were introduced to Atlantis through the eyes of Jason, a dude from our world who has surprising connections to this city of dragons and despots that nobody *cough ORACLE cough* wants to tell him about. But he's managed to pick up two new friends - gruff-but-not-so-secretly soft Hercules, and Pythagoras (yes, that one) - as well as a love interest, an ominous enemy, and Not Die several times in exciting and dramatic ways.
Based on the teaser, it looks like the show is about to introduce another female character, which I am super-excited about, even though the name "Medusa" brings up All Kinds of Questions.
(cut for length and for lots and lots of botanical confusion)
Forest at night. Woman running through the woods while something ominous chases her. Are there forests in Atlantis? I don't remember seeing any in the surrounding wide shots when Jason first showed up from the beach. Where the hell is this supposed to be?
(Side note because I am a Certified Plant Nerd: Where was this FILMED? I'm gonna guess England because BBC and also the leaves look SUPER TEMPERATE, there are definitely maples in there.)
Woman collapses and the camera focuses on her bracelet, which I am sure will be significant later on. We don't hear anything, she starts to get up and I brace myself for a jump scare.
She's got a necklace, too, and I wonder if that's a Plot MacGuffin or if she just has good taste in jewelry.
Ok, so we see her pursuer sneaking up on her, and she turns, and we see it for the first time from her POV and... it's a cave troll! Or something very much like it. She screams, we go to credits.
None of the credits are backwards this time, and I'm so relieved because THAT WAS ANNOYING.
I like the juxtaposition of the ocean and the ruins, then the view of the city, because this show is called ATLANTIS, which implies it's really about the city as a whole (or the city as a character) rather than Jason, even though Jason is the protagonist and audience surrogate.
There are some mountains in the background that look like they COULD Ā have forests, and I will reserve judgement until I see the sets in the daylight, but those mountains look like they ought to be chapparral or the local equivalent, NOT the kind of forest shown in the opening. I'm just saying. I have strong opinions about flora and I will share them.
I am so curious where Atlantis is supposed to be, but I think it's Crete? I'm going with Crete for now until I get more information.
Jason is tossing rocks into a pool because... he's just that bored? Missing the Internet? He's wearing a leather tunic thing and not shirtless, but I'm sure he'll lose it by the end of the episode.
He hears something and gets up and sneaks up on the person coming in the doorway, but I already know it's either Hercules or Pythagoras, and most likely Herc, so I am not surprised when it's Herc. Herc is late AND drunk and Jason is pissed. Apparently, he and Herc are working as security guards for a rich merchant?? (So that answers my question about how they're making money and paying the rent!!)
Jason runs to the Oracle's temple because he's in dire need of Cryptic Exposition and also a Greater Purpose in Life and where better to acquire a Noble Destiny?
"You should not be here," says the Oracle, which is just a classy way of saying GTFO.
"I need answers," Jason demands.
LOL, not happening, dude. She only deals in Cryptic Sayings, not answers. (Although kinda ironic given that the Delphic Oracleās motto was āKnow Thyselfā.)
Jason mentions that the minotaur dude claimed he had a great destiny and you can just see the Oracle rolling her eyes, and be all, And you believed him?? LOL.
But Jason DOES Ā have a destiny, even though it doesn't feel like it so the Oracle has to explain that this, too, is also a part of his destiny, and he should just lean into the suck.
Jason calls bullshit. Oracle explains she's trying to protect him, and "all will become clear", mic drop. Jason walks away bummed, but it's DESTINY for him to be confused right now, and I am sure he will have some sort of Character Development about this by the end of the episode.
Herc fell asleep on the job and wakes up to being licked by a goat, which is probably not the most undignified thing that will happen to him in this episode. Also, somebody stole his keys and robbed the thing he was supposed to be guarding, so I'm sure this will end well.
Cut to Herc trying to explain this to Pythagoras, and Pythagoras is calling bullshit. Pythagoras notes the goat slobber and does the best eyeroll to Jason, I love him.
(Hercules is like the roommate from HELL here. How did he and Pythagoras end up rooming together in the first place?)
There's a knock on the door, but it's not the angry merchant, it's the CALL TO ADVENTURE... an old man who's heard that they killed the Minotaur and wants help locating his daughter. I'm picturing an Atlantis version of Sherlock Holmes starring Pythagoras and Jason and it's awesome.
Herc does not want to touch this with a ten foot pole but Jason is bored and eager to help, and so Herc is going to get dragged into this whether he likes it or not. He tries to reject it on the grounds of money, but it doesn't work. The old man talks about his "duty as a father" to make sure his kid is safe, and that's all he needs to say to get Jason on board, because Daddy Issues.
Jason and a new female character, Corinna, are in the palace, trying to be stealthy and they run into Ariadne, which is... awkward. Jason tries to explain, and Ariadne says it's forbidden for Jason to be here... why? Because he's a man? Because he's a stranger? Because he's on Minos's personal shit list? I need some context here.
Jason quizzes Celandine, a kitchen worker, and learns that Demetria, the missing girl, went to the forest to gather herbs and was never seen again. I don't understand what Corinna's role in all this is , but she persuades Celandine to help Jason out by showing him the place where Demetria went.
Time for another marketplace chase! This time it's the merchant after Herc. Meanwhile, Celandine takes Jason to a forest that's super-arid and looks nothing like the one we saw in the opening. There's rock outcroppings in the background, too. No leaf litter at ALL. All dry ever greens... and then a wide shot showing a hill that looks like chapparral, with a series of mountains beyond THAT that look more temperate and have actual snow capped peaks and those are NOT IN THE CREDITS, NONE OF THIS GEOGRAPHY MAKES ACTUAL SENSE, BUT FINE.
Also, it makes zero sense that Minos would send kitchen servants to the forest WAY outside the city limits... wouldn't it be easier for everyone if they sent special people to do that and the kitchen just picked them up or bought them from poorer folk who did? Where are the roads? Are there any surrounding villages and encampments outside the walls? Shepherds watching their flocks? A road? How do the servants know where to go? What stops them from running away? Etc. Etc. Ā I HAVE QUESTIONS, OKAY?
Cut to them in a different forest - still evergreen trees, but a different kind. Looks like a plantation. Everything is too neat and open and in rows. There's greenery, but no sign of any herbs or really any kind of understory. LOL.
Are we there yet? Jason wants to know.
These woods are rich with herbs, Celandine says, and I can't tell if she's being ironic or not because I DO NOT SEE ANY, THERE IS NOTHING BUT CONIFERS HERE, CONIFERS ARE NOT HERBS (though they can have medicinal uses!). Then she adds "If you know where to look" and pulls a knife to stab an unsuspecting Jason while he's looking at the ground, so I guess that answers that question.
(For the record, Celandine is a toxic plant that is actually native to n. Africa, and the Mediterranean and western Asia, so I kinda saw that coming from the name and also the ominous music and close-ups of her face.)
Jason wises up in time to Not Get Stabbed, and Celandine runs away. Jason chases after her, and I saw some FERNS this time in the chase scene, but again NO LEAVES or much in the way of forest diversity at all. Celandine drinks something that looks like poison and dies while Jason is interrogating her. The troll-creature lurks in the woods.
Pythagoras IDs the poison as hemlock. (LOL, of course he would know!) The only reason he doesn't mention that it killed Socrates is probably because Socrates hasn't been born yet, but I am sure the writers were tempted. Jason fell asleep in World History, and also every Literature class ever, because he has no idea what a thyrsus is, or who Dionysus and the maenads are, so Pythagoras and Herc get to explain for the audience! Apparently, the satyrs kill any men who crash their clubhouse, so that's what the troll thing is, I guess?
So apparently the maenads just kidnap girls to join their cult? This is not how I remember it, but okay, fine, let's have the all-female religion be EVIL for DRAMA. Does this mean the trio's going to cross-dress?
Demetria (?) is trying to dig her way out of cell, only to get called to a Secret Evil Ceremony that involves blood, chanting, and tearing apart a dude with their bare hands. Oh, wait, no, they just toss him to the cave trolls (LITERALLY LURKING IN A HOLE IN THE GROUND), which is easier to show on network TV, I guess.
Jason breaks the news to Demetria's father, and he's... aghast. "I won't allow it!" he cries. The show has not explained why it's a bad thing to be a maenad... aside from the whole killing people bit, but I mean, the king kills people all the time in the name of the gods, what makes this any different? (I mean, Minos's evil, but still! He's in charge!) Why can't Demetria be a maenad and still work in the palace and visit her dad? Isn't that what Celandine did?? I AM SO CONFUSED.
Also: father trying to control his daughter's actions is historically accurate, but sits poorly with me, even though she WAS kidnapped in this case and doesn't want to be there. But what if she wasn't? So far the show hasn't explained to me why EVERY WOMAN wouldn't want to be a maenad. Hanging out in the woods without any men and a lot of intoxicants sounds... way better than almost anything else they could be doing.
The old man collapses in grief and Pythagoras is also a healer, because he makes an infusion of what sounds like "Magnolia remenalis" (??). Which is odd because that genus is located in the Americas and eastern Asia, and even assuming trade routes from China are a Thing here, that wouldn't likely be a part of the typical pharmacopeia, especially if Pythagoras has no money...? And I know there are a bajillion species of magnolia, but I've never heard of this... and would he call it by a Latin binomial anyway? But if it's not that, what is he TALKING about? THIS IS WHY I HATE WATCHING THINGS WITHOUT SUBTITLES.
The old man guilts Jason into going after Demetria, of course, thanks to Daddy Issues. Herc is pissed, especially when he realizes they put the old man in his bed. I love Pythagoras's little smile when he explains that Herc is in charge of their guest, since he's not going on the Mission of Certain Doom!
Herc is so predictable, lol. He brings up the prospect of faking his own death to get out of his debts, and I CANNOT HELP BUT WONDER if this is going to be relevant later on. Like... faking your death so the maenads don't find you, perhaps? And changing your name??
(dear writers, if you don't want me to guess your plot twist, please don't PUT THE WHAM LINE IN THE TEASER, kthanx.)
OH MY GOD THIS IS THE SAME FOREST WHERE THEY FILMED THE FIGHT SCENE IN THE FORCE AWAKENS ISN'T IT? I *RECOGNIZE* THIS PLACE!!
(yup, definitely England. Puzzlewood, almost for certain.)
Of course, the most appropriate way to spend the night is to make a fire, eat soup, and tell ghost stories about maenads first, right? Right. The forests rustle. There's a cave troll stalking them. (Yes, it's supposed to be a satyr, but it looks like a cave troll from LOTR, okay??) He tosses something in the food, which probably means it will only impact Hercules, lol. Hallucinations, maybe??
Why anyone would trust Herc with night watch given his track record, ESPECIALLY these two, I don't know, but PLOT.
Yep, definitely the old mine in Puzzlewood. I'd bet money on it.
Herc follows a woman who looks like an elf from LOTR, lol... but it's a satyr in drag. (Or a hallucination?) IDK why everyone is making a big deal about the maenads when they mostly just stand around and let the male satyrs handle everything.
RUN, HERC, RUN! He's rescued by... Demetria, who also wants to get away. Somehow the satyrs don't see them? *shrug*
Demetria uses Herc's knife and cuts herself and walks out with a bloody mouth, claiming the satyrs killed Herc and she drank his blood... I mean, won't the satyrs call her on it?? But the ruse works and she leaves with them.
Meanwhile, Jason and Pythagoras slept through the entire night without incident, and I just... the satyrs KNOW THERE ARE THREE OF THEM. How come they didn't just slaughter them in their sleep, or at least attack them??
Also, if the satyrs only eat human flesh, how does the ecosystem even WORK? How many of them are there?? How often do they eat? Are they omnivores or obligate carnivores? I HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS.

@the-everqueen omg this New Yorker piece you recommended!! so well-written (that image of wilderson writing from āhistoryās humid basement!) and wow, yes. this passage:
āIn the same vein, Wilderson describes a meeting that his father attended, as an emissary of the University of Minnesota, with several Native American leaders, hoping to resolve a conflict about reservation lands. Young Frank was in the audience, and someone sitting near him cried out, āWe donāt want you, a nā man, telling us what to do!ā The lesson that Wilderson takes from the episode is that the Native Americansāraped and slaughtered on these lands, subjected to a genocide that enabled the Americas as we know them to existāare āsovereigns,ā and therefore human, while his dad, middle class, American, and Black, is not. In a previous book, āRed, White & Black: Cinema and the Structure of U.S. Antagonisms,ā which grew out of his dissertation, Wilderson describes āthe Red, Indigenous, or āSavageā positionā as existing āliminally as half-death and half-life between the Slave (Black) and the Human (White, or non-Black).ā In āAfropessimism,ā even that gradation is gone. Wilderson overwrites history with the darkest, most permanent marker.
Every society has a murderous hierarchy: someoneās always knocking at the basement door, trying to get free. But life is prismaticāitās possible to be Black and degraded in America while also profiting from wanton extraction of resources overseas, oppressing millions of non-Black others, and living on land stolen from indigenous people. We are always joined in our sufferings, often by somebody we canāt see through the darkness. We speak of solidarity precisely because the empathetic act of analogy is a way of acknowledging this complexity, and of training our ethical senses, again and again, to widen the circle of our concern. Any system of thought that has refined itself beyond the ability to imagine kinship with the stranded Guatemalan kid detained at the U.S. border, or with the functionally enslaved Uyghur in China, or, againāI canāt get over itāwith the Native American on whose stolen ancestral ground you live and do your business, is lost in its own fog.
Black thought at its best has been a vehicle for and a product of analogy. Black Christians saw the liberatory potential in the story of the Hebrews rescued by God from beneath Pharaohās thumb and, still more, in the life of the Jewish Palestinian preacher Jesus, put to death by the colonizers of his homeland. Some of them looked to Latin America, where liberation theology blossomed; they created Black liberation theology, and forever transformed the flavor of American religion. A feeling of kinship with the colonized people of India, and with Gandhi in particular, helped make nonviolence a core practice of the civil-rights movement. A study of the revolutionary struggles in Algeria, Fanonās great subject, helped to make the caseāargued most famously by the Black Liberation Army, an influence on Wildersonāfor the occasional necessity of violence. None of this is incidental: the impulse toward freedom is always seeking friends.ā
also the reference to hooksās conception of theory at the endāthe contrast between the two frameworks (and then later with Black lesbian feminist thought) is so so striking. this passage (!):
āBut, unlike hooks, Wilderson does not choose to imagine possible futures. The only way to cure the condition of slavery that ails Black people, he says, is āthe end of the world.ā There will have to be a total end to thingsāan apocalypse. From civilizationās ashes something truly new might finally grow. How to hasten this final reckoning? Wilderson doesnāt say. To offer some further prescription would be a betrayal of the style of his book, and of the shape of his ideas.ā
#that was an excellent read thank you!!#also the reminders throughout about class and Americanness as sort of.. blindspots for him#were really interesting#i think the part about solidarity and imaginative empathy resonated most with me - and with what i was trying to express in prev post#just the way this line of thought taken to its furthest extreme just seems to shut down any possibility of imagination - as a way of moving#beyond the structures and strictures of the now#or of oneās own situation#do you have other writers you would recommend who are maybe drawing on aspects of AP but are taking it in different (maybe less pessimistic)#directions?#the only one i could think of right off the bat was hartman - bc her work seems to have influenced / been influenced by (?) AP but#imagination is so central to her method#i find her interesting bc itās not just imagining forward like in that hooks quote#itās also imagining back - seeking to imagine and write lives & experiences that the historical record has denied humanity to#wayward lives beautiful experiments especially#racism#antiblackness#theory

Once Upon a Pointe - Chapter 6
Story Summery:
āAnnabeth, youāre with Percy,ā Chiron said. Annabeth. She looked like the figurine in a little girlās music box had come to life to dance in City Ballet. Percy felt like every opportunity to dance with her was a privilege. Just donāt forget the choreography, Percy thought as he got into the right starting spot for the wedding pas de deux. Donāt forget the choreography, and donāt drop her.ā
Percy is soloist with the ballet company, and he is offered one chance to dance with Annabeth, one of their star principals. If he nails the choreography, he might just earn a chance to dance with her. And, if heās really lucky, he might get a date out of it as well.
Chapter Title: Vision
Read on AO3
Start from the beginning
Notes: I am in no way finished bringing attention to issues of race, religion, and cultural appropriation in Rick Riordanās books & in the fandom. Do not misinterpret me posting an update as a desire to move forward.Ā
Katheryn Morgan (soloist with the Miami City Ballet) has recently uploaded an interview with the dancer and author of "A Final Bow for Yellowface" Phil Chan, where they discuss race in ballet. Please consider checking it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYw2pLn9CAg
Percy woke up to the soft February sun beaming in his face through Annabethās large bedroom window. When he opened his eyes, squinting in the sunlight, he saw that she had already gotten up. He rolled over to check his phone ā 8:30 a.m.
They both had today and the next day off before the show as other casts ran their dress rehearsals. Usually he spent his days off wandering the city, catching up on TV, or hanging out with Grover once his boring and normal nine-to-five job at a nonprofit ended. But those days off didnāt usually start in Annabeth Chaseās bed ā in face, none of them ever had. He hoped that maybe theyād end up spending the day together.
Or maybe sheād ask him to leave as soon as he left the bed.
He stayed there for another moment, trying to think of the perfect āspend the day with meā line, but he came up blank. Heād just have to wing it.
He opened the door and stepped into the living room. Annabeth was standing in the kitchen over a frying pan, still in her pajamas (now rumpled from a night of sleep), and her blonde hair was up in a high ponytail, the ends tangled together.
She looked up and smiled at him. Percyās heart raced, fuck, he thought, sheās gorgeous. Before he could say anything to her, though, she told him: āYou drool when you sleep.ā
Percy flushed, a hand going up to his mouth to wipe away any trace of drool that might still be there. She laughed at him, and he smiled.
She turned back to the frying pan. āIām making eggs. I hope thatās okay.ā
āEggs are great,ā he said. āI thought you didnāt cook.ā
She shrugged. āI told you, Iām not completely incompetent. I can scramble an egg reasonably well.ā She said, dishing out the servings onto two plates.
Percy took a seat at the table. āHave you been up long?ā He asked.
āNo, ābout half an hour.ā She said. āCoffee?ā She offered.
He nodded, and she put a mug down in front of him, and then his plate of eggs and avocado toast.
She sat down at the other end of the table.
āThanks,ā Percy said, about to dig in.
He piled some eggs on top of his toast and took a bite. They were good, although he would struggle to find an adult who couldnāt make a decent scrambled egg. āHow are you feeling?ā He asked.
āBetter,ā she said. āA lot better. Thanks for listening to me and for staying the night.ā
Percy smiled. āOf course, any time.ā He realized what he said and felt his ears get hot. āAnyway ā¦ā he tried to think of literally anything else to say, but nothing came to mind. Annabeth saved him, though.
āDo you have any plans for today?ā Annabeth asked.
It took a moment for Percy to register what she had said. He was preoccupied by the casual way she sat at the other edge of the table, sunlight bouncing off her curls, as if they sat together like this every day.
Finally, though, he remembered sheād asked him a question. āNo, not really.ā He told her.
āDo you want to hang out downtown for a little while?ā She asked.
Percy smiled. āSure, thatād be great.ā
Percy stood in front of Annabeth bathroom mirror, which had fogged up with steam from his shower. She had showered before him and was getting ready in her bedroom.
He leaned forward and drew a smiley face on her mirror for her to discover the next time she showered.
He dressed quickly, only having the same sweatpants and tee shirt from the night before, but it would have to do.
Annabeth was waiting on her couch for him to get ready. She was dressed in a light pink sweater and light jeans with her hair braided over her shoulder.
āReady to go?ā She asked.
Percy nodded. They grabbed their jackets and headed out the door.
~*~*~
They walked down the avenue to Washington Square Park, stopping on the way to indulge in some hot chocolates. It was just starting to get a little warmer ā they daily temperature tended to hang out in the forties during the day, rather than what Percy called āface hurting temperatures.ā
Still, he wished it was a little warmer so they could sit on a bench or the grass for a while and just relax in the Spring sun. But the cold sun of the end of February would have to do.
It did come with its perks, Percy realized, when a cold wind blew, prompting Annabeth to instinctively move closer to him. He wrapped an arm around her, pulling her into his chest for a moment as the breeze blew by. When it was over, they parted, neither blushing or uncomfortable.
Sure, he was usually physically close to her, but stage intimacy was far less erotic than many people assumed. On stage or during rehearsal, both were sweaty, trying not to breath too hard, and mostly worrying about their own steps and safety and the safety of their partner.
A gentle closeness so far removed from the studio, though, felt deeply intimate. He almost reached down to hold her hand, but she had it in her jacket pocket. He left his hand by his side in case she had the same thought, but she never reached for it.
When they reached the arch, Annabeth paused in front of it. āYou know, if I hadnāt joined the company, I would have gone to school for architecture.ā
āReally?ā Percy asked, looking at her.
She nodded. āI guess I kind of am or was at least.ā She said. āI was part time at NYU for a few years, but between being a principal, and planning a wedding, then calling off the wedding, and everything that came after that, I havenāt taken a class in almost ā¦ā she paused, āalmost two years, I guess.ā
āWhy architecture?ā Percy asked.
She shrugged. āAesthetics, partly. I really enjoy aesthetic, design, and flow. Obviously, I do, or I wouldnāt be a dancer. But buildings can have all of those things too, just not in the same way.ā She sipped her hot chocolate. āItās also the opposite of dance. Buildings are static, and theyāre so permanent.ā
Percy nodded. The fleeting nature of ballet loomed over all of them. Most men could go until thirty-five at least, and a lot of women made it to forty, if not longer. But one bad injury could end a career in an instant.
āDo you want to be an architect when you retire?ā He asked.
She shrugged. āMaybe, but thatās a hard career to start at forty. Knowing myself Iāll end up teaching or choreographing. I donāt think I could ever really leave it behind, you know?ā
āYou could design theaters.ā He suggested.
She smiled at him like she had had the thought before. āYeah, I could.ā Her hand dropped out of her pocket and rested near his, but he didnāt feel courageous enough to take it. āWhat about you?ā She asked.
āOh, I have no idea.ā Percy said. āI barely graduate high school.ā He admitted. āCollege is not my speed, so Iāll probably linger in the ballet world as long as theyāll have me.ā
She bumped him with her shoulder. āCome on, you have no ideas?ā He shook his head. āWildest dream? If a genie showed up right now and told you heād give you your dream career, what would it be?ā
āWell,ā Percy said, āif Iām wishing for stuff, Iād just wish to be able to dance forever.ā
āAlright thatās on me,ā Annabeth said, laughing, āI set the bar too low.ā She took his hand, and his breath caught. āSeriously, I wonāt judge you.ā
It was a hard question to answer. Percy had spent a lot of time in his training thinking about what heād do if he didnāt get a company contract when his training ended. Teaching was one option, but he didnāt know if heād like doing that if his own dreams had fallen through. With his poor grades, he always figured heād just get a retail or restaurant job and try and work his way through management and dance on the weekends.
But if today were the day that he had to stop dancing ā¦
āI guess Iād teach,ā he admitted, ābut I donāt know if Iād want to teach at the academy.ā
āWhy not?ā She asked. They started walking out of the park and towards the street, wandering aimlessly through the West Village.
He had never really wanted to teach at the academy, he realized. Sure, the prospect of training a new group of kids who would go on to join City Ballet, Miami, Royal Ballet, Ballet West, and all the other big companies was exciting, but he was lucky to have had that education at all. So many things had to go right in his life to even make it into their ranks ā a good ballet teacher off the bat, scholarship money, his mom marrying a man who had a savings account and cared about her son. Without any of those things, Percy wouldnāt have a career.
āI was on my own at the academy,ā he said, āone of the only kids who started late and didnāt have great training before that. Most other kids were,ā like you, he though, but he didnāt say it, āborn lucky. They had exposure to ballet young, good training, and they never had to worry about how they were going to pay for things. I had to worry about that all the time. And I was still luckier than most.ā He said. āJust think about how many talented kids there are just on my block alone that will never get my chance.ā He looked ahead towards the street. The West Village had once a bohemian shithole, but (thanks in no small part to NYU), it had been gentrified into one of the most expensive areas in the city. āI guess if I could do anything Iād just try and help those kids. Donāt know how Iād do it, but thatās what Iād really like to do.ā He told her. āI know itās crazy.ā
She stopped walking and pulled him to the side of the path, getting out of every oneās way.
āItās not crazy.ā She said.
For a moment on the edge of the sidewalk, hugging the wall of some coffee shop, neither of them moved. She looked at him, tilting her head up just slightly to look him in the eye. When she licked her lips slightly, Percyās heart almost exploded, sure that she was going to lean in. But instead she broke the tension, turning back to the middle of the sidewalk to keep forward, dropping his hand.
āAt least,ā she said, not looking at him, ānot as crazy as wanting to pivot to architecture.ā
He jogged to catch up with her. āThatās not crazy either. Besides, if I know you at all, I know nothing will stop you from getting what you want.ā
She smiled, looking down at the sidewalk as she walked forward. āNothing stops you either as far as I can tell.ā
āI am notoriously scrappy.ā He said, pulling a laugh out her, which dissolved any remain uncomfortable tension while taking away any remaining hope of a kiss.
~*~*~
When they finally got too cold to stand walking around any longer, they ducked into a dimly lit pub.
āDo you ever just wish you had a job where you didnāt have to worry so much about what you ate and drank?ā Annabeth asked him. They did eat a lot, of course. They both probably ate more than the average person, they just also had to eat way healthier than the average person.
āPretty much every day.ā Percy said. āEvery time a season ends, I just crush a cheeseburger, first thing.ā
Annabeth had been to the pub before, and guided Percy through some good options on the menu.
Their conversation stayed light ā childhood stories, embarrassing moments, favorite TV shows. When Annabeth started to ramble about architecture being a universal language for people, and how The Hunchback of Notre Dame is actually all about the building, and how the novel saved the church, Percy couldnāt stop smiling. Her gaze was distant, but her eyes were bright. Percy was delighted to see her so happy.
When the check came, Annabeth grabbed it off the table before Percy could even reach for it.
āAbsolutely not,ā Annabeth said when Percy reached across the table. āYouāve done so much for me the last few days, buying you lunch is the least I can do.ā
Percy didnāt protest anymore, instead just choosing to thank her for the meal. He hoped it wasnāt the last one they got to share together.
~*~*~
As the afternoon went on and the sun started to set, Percy realized he needed to go home. He didnāt want to leave Annabeth, but he also didnāt want to be wearing the same clothes for twenty-four hours.
āI can come back if you need anything, or if Luke comes around,ā he said as they headed towards the subway.
Annabeth shook her head. āI should be fine. I think Iām going to call Piper or Silena and talk some things out with them.ā You can talk to me, Percy wanted to insist. But he knew she was closer with them than with him, no matter what he wanted to be true.
āCall me if you need anything,ā he told her. She nodded and promised she would.
They stood at the top of the subway stairs, doing their best to stay out of everyone elseās way, but that was almost impossible to do when you were standing still on New York City sidewalk.
āPercy,ā she said looking up at him, āthank you. Seriously, thank you for everything.ā She pulled him into a tight hug, burying her face in his shoulder. He wrapped his arms around her, trying to hold her even closer. Her hair smelled like lemons.
āAnytime,ā he told her. He pressed a gentle kiss into the top of her head; if she noticed or minded, she didnāt show any sign of it.
Annabeth pulled away after a little too long (not that Percy minded) and smiled at him. āGet home safe,ā she said, before turning to head towards her apartment.
~*~*~
Percy rested his head back against the subway window, grateful for a seat on his way back up town, trying to remember the way Annabethās hair smelled, and the ways her eyes lit up when she was excited.
He hoped that they stayed close when they werenāt dancing together anymore. The have to, he figured. They were friends now, not just coworkers or dance partners.
He knew from experience that performances come and go too quickly ā a month of rehearsal just for four shows? It was almost unfair. Leeās husband, a Broadway actor, had once complained about his eight shows a week schedule at a company party. Eight Sleeping Beautyās a week was probably physically impossible, but Percy did sometimes miss doing six or eight ballets a week as an apprentice or corps member. He certainly wouldnāt pass up one or two extra performances of Sleeping Beauty if he had the chance. He wanted to hold onto it for just a little bit longer. Ā
~*~*~
The next morning, Percy woke up feeling like he was an astronaut on the moon, hearing the air leave his spacesuit, but he could not find the leak. He didnāt remember his dream, but his heart was beating hard and fast. He performed tomorrow, he remembered. He took a deep breath, but it didnāt do anything to calm his anxiety. Throughout his morning routine, of breakfast, palates, and stretching, he felt like he was the vice president of anxiety, and the president was nowhere to be found.
He had fleeting moments of confidence as a dancer ā moments where he was sure he was good, that he was going to succeed, moments where, if he closed his eyes, he could swear that he was flying not just jumping. But mostly he would bag on himself for things he couldnāt do or didnāt do well. Those fleeing moments of confidence could be diminished by any small error.
He had to succeed. Part of it was vindictive ā people had always underestimated him. But most of it felt like debt. His mother had sacrificed so much just to get him to dance practice and to keep him enrolled at the school. If he never made principal ā¦
When he was eleven and his YMCA teacher told Sally that he should be in more advanced classes, Sally asked him if he wanted to continue ballet. Just say no, he had told himself, knowing that there was no way his mom could pay for all the lessons heād need. It would hurt less to stop dancing at eleven than to make it all the way to fourteen or fifteen only to give it up then.
He had spent as much time in dance classes dancing as he spent worrying that at some point the rug would be pulled out from under him, and heād lose it all. That there would be a point where he just couldnāt continue. He already spent most of his training playing catch-up with people who had been dancing since they could stand, and he always feared his career being stunted on the other side.
But when he was eleven, and he told his mom he wanted to stop dancing, he had called him on his lie. āIf you want to do it, we will do what we have to do,ā she told him. That meant he had to switch to public school and work jobs to pay for summer intensives and after-school classes. Even with all that, and his scholarships, it was Paul that made any of it possible. Heād gotten lucky; finally, some of that luck that seemed to grace some of the worst people finally trickled down to him and his mom. She had married a man with a savings account and love of the arts. He had no problem helping them pay for his summer intensives or his academy tuition.
He thought his meeting with Chiron at the end of his last year in the school. The year before, he had been encouraged to try out for other companies but told that an apprenticeship wasnāt out of the picture. When he got back to his apartment, he tried not to tell his mom, to keep it a secret and to work as hard as he could the next year to earn his spot.
Heād cried as soon as he saw her though; guilt and disappointment cut through his stomach and chest like a knife. Sally had tried to assure him that he wasnāt a failure, but that didnāt change any of his thinking on the issue.
When Nutcracker season came, and Percy wasnāt offered an apprenticeship, he figured that it truly was over. He had almost gotten to a point where he thought his entire dance career was over, until Lupa Lopez had called him back about his audition, and offered him a spot at Miami. His mom had let him have a glass of Champaign to celebrate. Ā
Chiron was less enthusiastic than his mother had been. When Percy told him the good news, he kept a straight face and asked, āHave you signed anything yet?ā
āNo.ā
āGood, donāt.ā
He was called into the office two days later. āLupa and I have the same eye for dancers,ā he said. āSheās taken some of my best away from me. So, it wasnāt surprising to hear that she was interested in you joining her company. She must see the same things in you that I see.ā
Percyās eyes went wide.
āYouāre talented, Percy,ā Chiron continued, āand disciplined,ā that was the first time a teacher had said that about him, he realized. Chiron handed Percy a stack of a few papers. āAnd you should stay with City Ballet.ā
It took Percy a moment to realize what he was looking at. His dyslexia only acted up when he got stressed. Finally, he deciphered it. āWait ā¦ is this for real?ā He was holding an apprentice contract with his name on it.
āSorry for making you go on all of those auditions,ā Chiron said.
Percy hadnāt even waited to get home to tell his mom. Instead, he found a quiet stairwell where he could tell her and cry with her. He thought she was going to break his ribs with how tightly she hugged him when he got home. āIām just so happy,ā she said, āthat you donāt have to move to Miami.ā
He was tired of barely succeeding ā barely making it into the academy, barely getting an apprenticeship, barely getting leading roles. He wondered for a moment if she had these fleeing moments of confidence met quickly by self-doubt, before he remembered their last Diamonds rehearsal. Percy was terrified when she had stopped dancing, and he became more worried when he saw the frantic look in her eyes. She had broken, he realized; she had hit a level of doubt and pain that you canāt easily pull yourself out of.
He didnāt, Percy realized, have the luxury of breaking, though. If he left, there was no guarantee that his spot would be there when he came back. He could only bend.
Annabeth couldnāt break either. Percy could end up stagnant if the shows didnāt go well. If Annabeth broke again, though, her career could be over.
They both had to bend and bend far. Four shows, Percy realized, four shows to get it right. Just donāt forget the choreography, and donāt drop her. He told himself. And if you forget the choreography, just make it up. Ā Ā
Luke had left a principal male spot open that Chiron still hadnāt filled. In a fleeting moment of confidence, Percy told himself Youāre the perfect fit.
He felt like he was standing on the edge of a cliff, but he couldnāt see what was at the bottom. He was safe as long as he stayed on land. If he jumped, he could die, or he could land safely in the water. There wasnāt another way forward.

* / BIOGRAPHY
iām sorry it got long
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā šššššš šššššās entire childhood was spent in the spotlight -- her father was a huge rockstar in the 70's & 80's, and her mother a model . Claire spent her childhood between Florida , California , and New York , attending red carpets , premieres , etc. Claire attended Stanford to obtain a bachelor in science but was in and out of modeling in her teens and early twenties .
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā ššššš šššššššš Ā lived an affluent life more under the radar . His grandfather is CEO of JD banking , one of the four largest banks in the world . He attended Princeton as the rest of his family did . He got involved in the company business at a very young age as did his brothers , but went on to become the new CEO after his fathers unfortunate passing in 2002 .
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā ššššš was and will forever be her parents pride & joy . her parents were high school sweethearts & got married young -- at a twenty-two / twenty-three . they had been trying for two years to start their own family but julesā mother struggled . thanksgiving in the hamptons , a dicaprio family tradition the day is engraved in her mothers memory , in 1997 , they announced to their family that after years of trying , they were pregnant .
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā ššššš grew up completely pampered ; bi-weekly trips to the nail salon with her mother and annual father-daughter trips . her mother was her best friend until she began morphing jules into what she thought was perfect . making sure she spoke at least one other language , was active in school , extracurriculars , how she presented herself . her mother cared about image due to her own childhood of growing up in the spotlight . besides the near brainwash to fit her motherās image of perfect , everything was ideal & Ā ā normal ā up until the summer before her freshman year of high school . her mother discovered the affair her father had been having for months with a woman he did business with . he claimed it was due to the fact that julesā mother had returned to some normalcy and wanted to work again , modeling and doing some traveling , therefore he ā just missed her around ā . jules was aware of everything going on Ā , heard the countless nights they spent arguing in the opposite wing of the house , she picked up on her father being late to family dinner because ā he had work to do ā . her parents tried their best to keep her in the dark for the sake of her sanity , innocence , and view on her father . jules went along with it all , the daddyās girl in her was in denial for all of the months leading up to their divorce . at the end , her mother got full custody of her .
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā šššš ššš ššššššš came two ā yes ā parents . everything became a competition between the two , trying to one up the other ; who took jules on the better summer vacation , had the most over the top christmas morning , etc . it Ā was insanely manipulative & jules there wasnāt a time period where jules felt more alone ; not having a sibling to relate to , she was embarassed to tell her peers the real reason why her parents split , it was so clichĆ© . both parents didnāt take too long to remarry , her father found another stay-at-home wife and her mother lucked out with a lawyer ten years older than she . her step-father had two daughtes & son with whom jules hated in the beginning ā it Ā was a lot to take in and she was used to being the only child . her father went on to have a child with his new wife two years after their marriage . it was all an immense amount of change within seven years .
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā ššš
š for jules had been constantly changing since the news of her fatherās affair , sheād spend her summers & holidayās going back & forth between each parents in the hamptons until her father moved to calabasas to be closer to his wifeās family as soon as the baby was born . jules had always been a wild , reckless child at heart and the divorce between her parents only allowed her to push her limits even more . the two-three years her parents spent processing their divorce were her golden years -- she could not get in trouble with her parents and they never got upset with her . she took advantage of it all and abused drinking , hanging out with boys , you name it . she loved the attention she received from any male figure -- it made up for the lack of attention she was getting from her father once he got the boot .
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā ššššššš was where jules found her safe space ; she could be her wild self , far away from home and only a five hour drive from her father that she still rarely sees . she joined a sorority , joined the exec board , was forced to join french club by her mother , all while maintaining a 4.08 gpa .
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā * Ā ` ššššššššššš šššš jules has always been a wild child . sheās always had a desire for attention , all eyes & attention on her , though the B I R T H of her uncontrollable desire for attention from males stemmed after her parents divorce . the lack of attention from her father allowed her to realize her dad wasnāt the only one who could spoil her & every man was basically the same . sheās not super close with either of her dads at the moment and sees her father about three times a year , two of which are holidays & every now and then the spontaneous visit from him in cali . Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā ššššš is a h u g e Ā cry baby in the sense that she hates not getting what she wants . its not on purpose most of the time , itās the way she was raised and the nature of her parents . sheās never had to ask for anything twice & hates doing so . though sheās a huge cry baby , she will try her best to mask her actual tears . she does a good job of seeming innocent , sheās that one friend that is super sus & lies a lot & keeps secrets but somehow is so good at convincing people other wise ? sheās a huge flirt , even when sheās not doing it on purpose , itās sort of a weird practice or habit sheās grown into ? she feels empowered in the weirdest way of owning men and being able to form their opinion of her for them , this stems from her newly founded daddy issues Ā itās more so due to the fact that her relationship with her father began to diminish once he moved out . she is & has been on her ā fuck love ā rampage .
Ā Ā Ā Ā ššš šššš do whatever she wants and will hide her bad intentions . she lives for chaos , loves enjoys pushing limits & boundaries . she loves a game of cat & mouse / teasing just knowing she has someone in her grip is what helps her sleep at night . she is a bit crazy . . . Ā the type to watch someoneās snap score go up . def that type to block and unblock someone 238473 timES . she has an underlying need of approval from others and she almost needs to be liked by everyone she meets .
Ā Ā Ā ššššššš she wants to model & be a playboy bunny BUT her dad would literally disown her if she didnāt follow her family legacy and attend stanford or yale to use her brains for good . sheās in school to be a pediatrician because at the end of the day she loves children and always wanted to seek a job in the healthcare field . she has plans to attend yaleās medical school after her senior year is complete at stanford .
i really based her off of american beauty & angela in the movie ( if youāve seen it omg ily ) g

Deliver UsĀ
The Bronx, New YorkĀ
Those who don't know her very well tend to assume that Miriam Levi must be another one of those Temperance zealots, given that she's a female champion for social justice yet also very religious. They would be wrong.Ā
Itās true that in the 1920s, the most dedicated Prohibitionists tend to be female and devout Protestants; but Catholics and Jews still use sacramental wine--legally. Along with "medical" alcohol (yes, really), religious wineries are now among the only legal producers of liquor in the United States. Naturally, this loophole is exploited by bootleggers, such as Miriam and Aaron's black sheep brother Moshe, a high ranking member of the Jewish Mafia. While Mo kills and cuts deals with Irish and Italian gangsters, Miriam and Aaron are trying to work their way out of poverty honestly. They were born to immigrants in the Bronx, and hope to join the wave of second-generation Jews who are moving to different parts of the Big Apple and into the middle class. If Miri and Aaron really get lucky and save enough money, they may even get to visit their own little Promise Land, up in the Borscht Belt. Mo and his croonies already live a lavish Roaring Twenties life in Manhattan, bought on booze and what Miri calls "blood money." Aaron has given up on him; Mirim continues trying to reach Mo, but he'll have none of it. Mo also indulges in the casual racism of the era, and won't join Miriam on the ahead-of-one's-time wagon. Ā Until one day when, seemingly out of the blue, Mo changes. He goes from sharing drinks with a corrupt cop to accidentally killing the officer, when the latter begins savagely beating an elderly Colored man on the Manhattan Bridge, and Mo intervenes. Mo flees New York, and his siblings don't see or hear of him for a couple years. Miri's spirituality takes another blow in 1925 from the famous Monkey Trial; the idea of faith and science coexisting is still a relatively new concept. However, Miriam's her faith gets a boost when their estranged brother finally Moshe returns to New York, now a philanthropist and police informant married to an African American woman. With some (legitimate) social connections through Mo, Miri and Aaron get better paying jobs, and the following spring the entire family is celebrating Passover in the Catskills. A fellow vacationer comments, "So you three siblings are Miriam, Aaron and Moshe, and Mo's married to a woman named Tzipporah? Did you all plan that, or did that just happen by mistake?" "Yeah that was weird, wasn't it." AN: This was a tricky A.U. to cook up. I didn't want to re-write the tale of Passover in the Roaring Twenties, though that would admittedly make a pretty awesome stage musical. I also didn't know what to do about the character's background, since no one religion has a copyright on Exodus, and ethnic groups involved don't cleanly fit into any modern ones. I ultimately went with Jewish immigrants, since it fit closely enough with the characters' arcs in the story (poverty and oppression; one odd Jew out living a corrupt decadent career; hypocritical racism, deliverance, and a sunny Promise Land not too far away.) And Jews do have an entire holiday revolving around the story. The outfit: I really love the first version of this picture, but it's just not 1920s. It's a great 1930s or '40s Miriam, though. The new dress I gave Miriam this time around is based on day dresses and tea dresses, with low ruffled skirts. Her overall look is inspired by Margaret Shroeder from "Boardwalk Empire." Of course, with 1920s makeup being so Egypt inspired, Miriam already has a very '20s look to her face. The background was horrifying to make. You might think that simplistic clipart of stylized Seder plates and Gatsby-styled line work would be easy to find. You'd be wrong. I had to build this entire background from clipart and shape tools, and it only looks decent from afar. Abstraction is not my area.
UPDATE: I have tweakedĀ some details.Ā
