Okay, I never post on Tumblr but I just got hit with such a violent hyperfixation that I forcibly had to put into words so, this is long one.

Life Series SMP as the Magnus Archives

So I had an idea for a Life Series AU where all the players are an avatar of one of the fears from tma. Warning that I haven't seen all Cc's povs so I'm mainly going off of vibes and moments I remember. I also tried to have at least 1 member in each fear.

Bdubs - The Dark

This is for obvious reasons with his association with sleeping and clocks. My hc is that, cause he can't sleep the night away, he kind of became an avatar of the dark. I like the idea of him just kind of hiding in shadowy corners, the only way to know he's there is by the sound of the clock letting you know that it's night now and you should not be out at this time.

BigB - The Spiral

This is mainly based on the whole thing with secret life and the weird corridors he had. I like the idea of that every time you look at him, you're not sure what emotion he is feeling. Is he happy? Annoyed? Angry? Who's to say. And where does that corridor lead anyway? Oh, wait, he says there are no corridors, but you just saw one didn't you? Oh, it's gone now, where did it go? Where did it's contents go?

Cleo - The Flesh

This was an obvious one. As much as I think she could also fit into other categories like the desolation, it's too hard to ignore the obvious aesthetical choice of making them a Flesh avatar. I mean, come on. I think as a fully realised avatar, she would have too many limbs. There are at least 7 leg warmers and sweatbands, not all on legs or arms. She had to work hard at jazzercise to get legs like that. And I mean it, the original owner was still using them.

Etho - The Stranger

This was a tough one, but I kind of like where I ended up. In almost every season, he has had more than one alliance, usually a main team and a back up one. Especially in Wild Life, where he was teamed with pretty much everyone. I think he, as a full stranger avatar, is always your friend, but also always your enemy but he's also the enemy of your enemy so he's your friend? At this point you're not sure how loyal he is to you or anyone for that matter. I also think that everyone has seen under the mask, but it's all different things. "I saw Etho's face, he had a huge mustache" "What? No, he doesn't have a mouth" "I saw that he had 2 mouths under there" "I saw every possible outcome of every universe happening simultaneously and in all of them, humanity perishes" "this is why we don't talk to you."

Gem - The Corruption

So this is mainly to do with the whole zombie thing in Secret Life. I was toying with the idea of Bdubs being the Corruption as well due to the Boogieman kills. I'm still not entirely sure of my decision. I want the Corruption ideas to lean into how people draw Gem as some form of woodland creature or druid. I like the idea of the Corruption being like plant life/small bugs. As a full avatar, she would look like how she is commonly drawn, but it's not entirely clear if that's skin, fur or bark. There's bugs in it regardless. Are her eyes glowing? Is it the fireflies around her or is it actually coming from her eyes? I think she'd appear almost like the Creaking, where you turn away and suddenly greenery and bugs start swarming from the ground, consuming you.

Grian - The Eye

I'm really in-between fears for this. As much as the Watcher symbolism works well for the Eye, I wasn't sure if I wanted both him and Martyn to be avatars of the Eye. I eventually decided, given he sets up the games and runs them, Knowing slightly more info than other participants, it does really tend towards the Beholding. I like the idea of an unwilling avatar like Jon is, but his abilities grow more and more over the seasons before it gets to Wild Life where someone is like "I wonder what the wildcard is today" and Grian is just suddenly flashbanged with the image of:

Impulse - The End

I haven't really watched Impulse POVs so I wasn't really sure what to do. I have a vague memory of him always doing quite well and getting in the last few a lot. I also know that previous teams have banked on Impulse being the member that could actually win. Regardless, he always dies just before he can win. I think he's a new, unwilling avatar, not fully coming to terms with his new identity, he always gets so close, only for death to sweep him away and he is forced to try again. I think that he, as an avatar, would be themed around wasting time, the concept that everything ends in death so the time spent before is pointless and wasted, this especially applies after his death in limited life.

Jimmy - The End

I mean, come on. The Canary Curse? Need I say more? I will add though that I think he's slowly becoming a fully realised avatar, hence why, in recent seasons he's not been out first, able to harness and manipulate his curse. Jimmy's always the first out, so we're all safe until he goes.... Right?

Joel - The Desolation

So this is about the whole "the ship burns, everything burns". I feel like, near the end of every series, he slowly gets more and more angry and violent. He usually starts acting almost desperate, think of his desperation in Last Life with his faulty traps. He is angry, volatile, and will do anything to burn everything you cherish to the ground. If the ship burns, everything burns.

Lizzie - The Buried

I've never really watched Lizzie's POV and I also didn't have anyone for the Buried. I couldn't think of anyone else that would work, so this is based on how, whenever she dies, someone seems to try and sell her bones to Joel. It's a weirdly common thing. I was gonna do the vast cause of her ending in Secret Life, but she did go down, not up, so I prefer the idea that she got stuck underground. It may look like the night sky, but it's the lack of air slowly choking her, unable to claw her way out, suffocating in silence deep under the ground.

Martyn - The Hunt

So I was also gonna put Martyn with the Eye because of the whole Watcher/Listener thing, but I think the Hunt fits better. I like the arc of his transformation over the course of the Life Series. In 3rd Life, he's essentially a soldier for the Red Army. Then, after realising the bloodlust and red haze, he becomes a relatively peaceful Southlander. But eventually, he kills his soulmate, unable to contain the need to kill and hunt. It reaches its peak in limited life where he just snaps, kind of like Daisy at the end of season 4. He then spent Secret Life as a dog before going back to his Red King as his hand in Wild Life. Ren may be an actual dog, but Martyn is his bloodhound.

Mumbo - The Web

Okay, hear me out: Mumbo as a very new avatar of the web who, due to the machinations of mother spider, is not aware of his avatar status, the avatar status of his pears, nor the existence of the fears at all. Think about it, every time Mumbo has gone out of the series, it has been his own fault. He attacks Grian unprepared, completely forgetting the ramifications of his actions. Gets stuck on a fence he placed then killed by a Warden. Gets stuck in his own spider's web of tnt minecart tracks. He also never goes for kills with basic PvP, it's always some elaborate scheme; making end crystals from a ghast farm, making a complex system of tracks for launching tnt, digging out a pit under a base and waiting for sooooooo long for someone to conveniently walk over the hole (also the web fucked that up for him with the fireworks in the background). I also really like the idea of the webs being like lines of redstone. I cannot draw, but can fully imagine the fanart in my head.

Pearl - The Hunt/Lonely

So Pearl is a double avatar. I couldn't decide between them. I hc her as the concept of looking out on the moors to see the silhouette of a lone hunter, on a horse with only the company of her hunting dogs. I think she embodies the solitude and the quiet of hunting by yourself. The only company she has is snarling hunting dogs, there to help stalk and tear at her prey. The only issue is, this hunter isn't looking for game.

Ren - The Slaughter

Ren does also fit with the hunt, but given his whole King persona, he lends more to the idea of a war waged by leaders in distant lands with a large toll amounting of nameless soldiers fighting for ideals their King tells them to believe in. I think his whole Red King character is pretty much a Slaughter avatar as is, so not much needs to change. I'm not entirely sure how I mix this with other seasons, but I do believe that Ren's most iconic character is the Red King, so fight me I guess. Red Winter is coming.

Scar - The Lonely

So Scar always focused on his connection (or lack there of) with Grian. He died, leaving his partner alone. Then he lived in recluse on a mountain, unable to bring back what he had. Even when forced to partner up, he is still alone. It takes him till Secret Life to finally embrace his avatar identity of being alone. Rumour has it that, on the Secret Life world, you can hear faint humming. No idea where the source is though, it's hard to find anything in the vast sunflower field.

Scott - The Vast

Scott was also hard to place, but I can't fight his whole spacey vibe. I also like the idea that, by refusing to succumb to the Boogieman curse, he defied the Watchers, these enormous, all powerful deities. I like the imagery of Scott, an ant in the face of these gods, being the bigger man.

Skizz - The Lonely

So Skizz is normally one of the first out in his team. He's also prone to sacrificing himself for the sake of the team. I think that is a lonely existence. I believe that Skizz, after giving his life to allow his team to move on, is forced to sit and watch. Unable to talk to his former teammates and stuck in isolation watching them go on without him.

Tango - The Desolation

Tbf, I think the way people draw Tango as a blaze has skewed my perception a bit. But I do believe the volatile anger he has works well with the idea of the desolation. As well as that, he has also had everything he loves destroyed. His ranch, his trust, etc. he's experienced so much desolation, he has simply become the burning fire of grief that laps at his feet.

i mean im reminded (and checked the video to remember right) of him joining and being turned into a proper hermit of hermitopia after he invited scar to be the first to try after the other spooked him by the Join! machine he made in his season 9 episode 27/called hermitopia and him at the very end of the video exclaiming to himself and the audience on how sad but true the smushed smallness trait he made for the hermits who joined hermitopia was more to his in real life height. (which, it’s implied but he’s short) and how much he hates how in game the effect/mod it looks so wrong in f5. also i guess because he’s a chaos gremlin, pesky bird, creechur, who fools everyone by being a cute ‘smol’ person (or just two big long black lines for eyes, a simple cozy enough red sweater/jumper, waffle hair, can remind u of bread, seeing irl him with his cats) who is so compacted with so much unrelenting energy he flies everywhere like a bird and gets into places that intrigue him. maybe some extremely old perceptions and kept views too with all the coming years knowledge we have now on what season 6 (or more&in gen viewers who came from evo, after it was finished) grian was like. new and probably to himself in over his head and intimidated and overwhelmed and maybe a little shy. <- has started his season 6 playlist awhile ago, never seen it in full, watched like a good ten episodes with a estranged friend and stopped watching at least 6 partly because of it. knows a lot about it from the grapevine. and ig watching all videos of hermitcraft recap season 6-9 a year ago because me not having time to watch all 30+-min episodes and getting a fun summary from pixl and zloy. i know I’m sending this late and if I write the one i said in tags got deleted it will be late too but i wanted to say this and possibly w/e else because i couldn’t stop myself otherwise. got into a explaining long wordy defensive ‘apologist’ brainrot spiral over…my main guy who entertains me? idk explaining and defending and arguing can be fun or just the right or wrong idk switch of i can’t think of anything else to do but maybe do it if i can with trying to be kind and careful. idk.

sooo I made a whole post about SL cletho and I've just watched all of Cleo’s LL and I'm having Thoughts so you're all gonna suffer for it

They've got this "you're good with me and I'm good with you" thing going on. Every season as I can recall they're never actively hostile toward each other beyond teasing jokes. They default to allying with each other when their main alliances fall apart, and they both just sorta know they won't be hurt by the other. They never discuss this on camera, but it's always true. Cleos always welcome in the white castle and they go there just to chat with Etho sometimes, she didn't want to let him get boogey'd by Pearl, he helped them on red life.

"I know you enjoy that kinda thing" "what, I enjoy rudeness?" "Don't you?" "I mean, don't *you?*"

Also just him betting on their life is so funny 💀

They are The last nonred alliance in the server, despite not being allies the entire season

He tells them AND other people that he's scared of her. Like?? Etho the minecraft man himself genuinely does not want to get on their bad side, to the extent he makes deals with her that are just "here I'll give you potions if you don't go after me for just this episode"

Etho’s panicked "BACK AWAY EVERYBODY IM DANGEROUS- oh, Cleo. Cleo, come with me." Man calms down IMMEDIATELY realizing it's them.

When they're ghosts, Cleo goes "oh Etho! I didn't see you die!" and he says "I got killed Cleo, I didn't survive :(" stuck out to me for some reason

He is the only one she takes compliments from. They don't even accept compliments from Scott or Pearl, but Etho keeps going "ooh that was good Cleo!" and "nice job with that one Cleo!"

bouncing off that he goes so far out of his way to make Cleo feel like a useful member of the team I'm. crying

"I thought I ran into lava but it was Cleo’s hair" I laughed so hard

Theyre just such good friends, like. In general they're very similar people in that they click really easily, they tend to gravitate toward each other in these Life series because they just generally trust each other. they have such a good foundation that you can put them in any situation and they'll still be rock solid. Cleo & Etho, man.

Okay so my life series fantasy AU

Basically Joel and Jimmy were isekai’d into this fantasy world. Everyone else is already part of the world. Jimmy basically wake up with Grian standing over him (Grian is a parrot Avian in this as per usual) and Jimmy totally freaks out.

And all I know from there is that Jimmy and Grian overthrow Ren and Joel heads to the feywilds and meets Lizzie. Oh and flower husbands meet and kiss by a lake, I’m sure there will be angst I’m getting there

So now actually about the guys

Bdubs

Moss spirit

He lives in the forest and loves to cause chaos

But also he helps people get in an out of his forest because it’s dangerous at night

Being a moss spirit Bdubs body is basically just made up of moss

Bdubs and Grian have issues, and when I say issues Grian causes problems and Bdubs has to deal with the aftermath

BigB

BigB is a fae who lives outside of the fae wilds

He has a bakery in the main city of the kingdom Ren and Martyn rule

He frequently speaks to the royal order something something maybe suspicious things

He’s best friends with Tango who he met through Skizz

Etho

He’s an Arctic fox

He lives in the ice realms which are relatively near the southern realms which is where the kingdom is

Jimmy breaks into his house by accident at some point and Etho just is like

‘This guy is my kid now’

Jimmy has no idea how to escape forcibly assigned son

Scar

A desert elf (desert duo ref)

Scar used to live in the kingdom before moving to the desert realms with Grian (they’re boyfriends)

Scar is a falcon tamer, usually he just tames regular falcons but was called into the city square to deal with a particularly pesky boy which is how he meet Grian

He also still has a wheelchair but it has like magic powers, Scar used his desert elf powers to make it so his wheelchair can drive across sand.

Grian

A Parrot Avian

HE CAUSES PROBLEMS ON PURPOSE

He has little bird legs and he likes to fly onto Scars falcon brace

And he takes shiny things from shops in the kingdom

He’s the one who recommended Scar go back to the desert

Skizz is aware of the watchers due to his angel origins

Scott is actually a star born

But he disguises himself as a Sea elf

He lives in solitude behind a waterfall in a flower meadow

He has long elf ears and coral in his hair that looks like it’s arranged slightly like a flower crown

Starborns have the ability to take the magical abilities of their surroundings or their friends, so Scott has magical powers relating to water and flowers, but this can change based on his surroundings in which he can gain additional powers (Water and Flower related powers will not change because he’s lived in the meadow for so long)

Something with him and Acho (his brother) having an argument, causing them to split from each other and adorn disguises heading down to the over realm

Scott has spoken to the royal counsel before but they do not like each other which is why he did not choose to live in the city, He is courteous with them but only really visits the city to speak with Impulse who he made friends with while living in the city.

Starborns being a rarer and more hunted but also very powerful species and kept track of by the royal order so he was mainly there to fill out paperwork

Tango

Tango is a fireborn

Fireborn do not have parents they spawn from fire and are only found in the Nether realms (Not to be confused for the Nether World) At the age of 16 Fireborn creatures will leave the Nether realms to find a home for themselves. The only fireborn who reside pass the age of sixteen are those who are unable to leave or caretakers of fireborn young.

So when Tango was 16 he left to the southern arms to set up a mechanics shop

When Tango gets angry his fire hair goes blue

Tango also had a mechanical arm :3

Pearl

Pearl is a lunar moth

She and Grian are siblings

They cause problems together I love them

I sadly don’t have much for anyone else right now :(

Well now that wild life is over, here’s a fic idea thats dead because of the winner.

So last week my friend and I were talking about how some of the life series members don’t feel like main characters, in the sense that it doesn’t feel like they will win or have a real role they’re meant to play. (Ex. Tango, Bdubs, Etho, BigB, Skizz, Impulse) if the winner was one of them, they throw the head of the last alive into the spawn circle and calls for the watchers. If it’s impulse or someone who is more background the threaten a ‘watch me play, don’t underestimate who I am’ sorts way.

But also if it’s Grian or a previous winner they beg for the end, and then say some really sad things about Mumbo and Scar

But now that Joel won it doesn’t really work anymore. (Maybe we’ll have next season)

Cub and the Wardens lore mayhaps? 👀 The Deep Dark... what's going on there?

WARDEN LORE

Ok lets see...

The Deep Dark is a series of tunnels beneath the Depths *I know, creative*

The Depths are the 'floor' of the main cavern, these tunnels run beneath it and are full of skulky fauna and stuff that has tumbled down their over the years from up above. It's an area of the under-city that is very much disconnected from the rest of under-city society. Even more so than the blaze-born Pyres, who are pretty anti-social in their own right. It's dark down there. Like...nearly pitch black. Sometimes inhabitants of the Deep Dark can go months without seeing any sort of light. That suits them though. It's an area populated by under-city folk who can't handle the noise of the main cavern, you can find some of the Bat Hybrid covens and some Phantom Mutants though they don't all live down there.

Of course, the most (in)famous group living down there are the Warden Mutants. They're solitary by nature, they typically live in small nuclear families if they even bother to have families at all, and they don't have particularly strong inter-personal ties as a subspecies like, say, the Cat and Dog clans. They're still people of course, with all the benefits and flaws, but they also take their peace and quiet very seriously. It gets violent quickly in the Deep Dark. Since it's an area beyond labs influence even more so than the Depths, which are now more or less managed by Ethos gang, a lot of organized crime has moved down there.

Warden Mutants are incredibly strong, and their subspecies glamor traits, the sonic shrieks paired with their ability to expand their sensory range through skulky fauna, mean that they rule the Deep Dark. They're dangerous, and they know it. So a lot of them get involved in organized crime to protect their territory and keep things quiet and dark as they like it.

This is where Cub grew up.

He was another gutter rat, never knew his parents or any sort of family, scrounged around to survive. When the Anarchy happened he was eleven, and a lot of broken tech and stuff from the labs was cast into the Depths and some of it ended up in the Deep Dark. He started tinkering with it. After the Anarchy began to settle and the labs were reestablished as a force for good in the under-city, he heard through the skulk about a school being opened in the Depths. Cub was nearly fourteen and he'd never had any sort of formal education, but he still decided to go. It was the first time he'd ever left the Deep Dark.

Loud, loud, loud, loud, LOUD. And bright, stars, why was it so bright!?

But he realized through attending the new school in the Depths that was an outreach channel for gutter rats like him that he was actually pretty smart. From there, he went on to earn himself a scholarship through the acclimation program to go topside to go to college, he was one of the first kids who was sent up after the Anarchy in an attempt to reestablish these channels the labs ran that were kind of abandoned while everything was fixed up.

Once he got up there, even if it was way to loud and way to bright, Cub realized he never wanted to go back down into the dark again.

Of course, I plan to expand on all of this in fics later down the line, especially because Cub has become something of a favorite in this AU which was not on my bingo card, but hey, I love writing him in this context so I'd love to do more for him! 💖

Last Life with divine domains

Part 4: Session 5 & 6

Fandom

As there weren't many suggestions last time I'll leave this empty and add them to the next part of this series. So @shortystack75 and @easily-distracted-by-fandom don't worry, your ideas will be in the next one.

Session 5

Etho is chosen as the boogeyman, Grian is notified about there being 1 boogey.

Scar has no reason to link anyone except the Southlands being his biggest enemies so he probably links Impulse and Martyn.

Martyn is given 3 rules to choose from: Everyone must play without sounds, Nobody is allowed to enter the nether, everyone must use showels as their main weapon. Martyn chooses the deaf option mostly because the Nether Is useful and using showels as weapons is a pain.

Grian probably still goes after Scott and Pearls villagers even without being a red, mostly because It's too big of an advantage... Meanwhile Cleo is getting her daily arson done by setting the fairy circle on fire... Lizzie summons a storm to estinguish the flames but if you know how minecraft fire works It's hardly enough.

Grian probably doesn't spawn trap Scar though... especially not alone versus a trio.

Etho doesn't buy Bdubs a life so he doesn't get the chance to get a kill on Scar... unless he goes to Scar to get himself a life and then kills him... But that doesn't seem likely.

So, Etho is still the boogey and Martyn is never summoned to the shadow alliance (because of not sharing resources with Ren)

Meanwhile Jimmy's attempt to buy a life from Scar Isn't twarted by Joel and Grian meaning he gets this sessions Scar bonus life... And isn't red anymore... I don't think Jimmy goes back to the Southlanders though considering that the only thing he can give Scar in exchange of a life is an alliance.

Now, Etho needs to get a kill... He's not going to target Bdubs, Skizz or Tango... Really, only magical mountain is really a target at this point so considering Mumbo is more likely to stay somewhere safe I'm going to say Joel dies at this time.

Etho not killing Scar means Skizz doesn't get the enchanter and Scar doesn't chase him to the Southlanders and doesn't die in a trap... However as strong as this version of Magical Mountain is I doubt they can keep the enchanter for this long so by the end of the session BEST has it.

Scott doesn't have the lives to gift Cleo one.

Lives

Scar has 6 lives.

Mumbo, Joel and Tango have 4 lives.

BigB, Etho, Lizzie, Ren, Pearl, Impulse and Scott have 3 lives.

Martyn, Skizz, Jimmy, Cleo, Bdubs and Grian have 2 lives.

Session 6

Mumbo, Joel, Jimmy, Scott, Etho and Bdubs are chosen to be the boogie, Grian discovers there are 6 boogeymen and panics.

Scar chooses... Well, either Southlands or BEST so *randomizer*...Impulse and Martyn.

Martyn has 3 rules to choose from this session: Everyone must set their game language to lolcat. No one is allowed to sprint or shift. One more boogeyman is added to the session. I think he chooses the boogeyman version over having an horrible and painful session because he has no idea there are 6.

Tango is chosen by the randomizer as the extra boogeyman, Grian is going to be very very confused when he realizes he got the wrong number of boogeyman... wonder how Martyn managed to fool Grian's sight.

Tango is equally confused at becoming the boogey after being told he wasn't.

Mumbo can't get his boogey kill in the same way as he isn't with Martyn and Grian when they listen in to team BEST... however Scar definitely goes after the enchanter and while Joel has already decided to target Lizzie Mumbo can use it as an opportunity to get a kill... Etho, Bdubs, Tango and Skizz are all equally likely to die so... Randomizer says Skizz... Skizz is red.

Meanwhile Joel traps Lizzie's base and still much like in canon accidentally kills himself in the process... Scar gives him his one bonus life.

Bdubs kills Tango in this timeline as well to get rid of the boogey curse... Tango of course can still threaten Bdubs like in canon but he also can do something else as he is also a boogeyman, Tango is rarely a fighter and he often has mire bark then bite but this once I'll let him have the satisfaction... I feel like Tango killing Bdubs also makes sense thematically... After all, the hearth is associated with home and family and betrayal is tarnishing that which the hearth stands for.

In our timeline Etho killed Mumbo as his boogey kill in response to him killing Bdubs... So... Etho kills Tango much the same way. Team BEST splits with Etho and Bdubs going on way and Tango going the opposite...and Skizz being a red is also doing his own thing now.

The Southlanders who are spending this whole reason spying on people for some reason use this to steal the enchanter.

Joel still goes out of his way to kill Lizzie.

Impulse and Grian still try to get the wither skulls which eventually leads to Scott killing Impulse... And Martyn going to red.

Scar still dies to Scott's water elevator, there is no reason for that not to happen.

Jimmy is still killed by Lizzie's trap, seeing similar deals made in canon I thinm he is given a life by Scar to stay with Magic Mountain.

If we consider timing Jimmy probably had the time to create his exile red life shack before trading his loyalty to magical mountain so Lizzie still falls into lava.

Joel and Mumbo don't try to kill Scott so he doesn't die by ender pearl this time.

Since yall seem to like my other AUs/headcanons, I've decided to rant a bit about my 'main' one :3 (kept vague to avoid spoilers)

Small summary: (more indepth rant below)

it's a villan & hero hermitcraft / life series / empires au, focused on bad boys (at least during the first arc). Joel creates a bar as a cover for a fighting ring/information selling business, joined by pearl effo gem grian and jimmy. Grian refuses to participate in the criminal activities at first, but doesn't rat them out either. (inspired by his resisting the resistance thing in s9)

However, as u can probably guess, this doesn't last long and he slowly gets more n more involved, especially once random people mysteriously start getting "the red curse", which he recognizes from his past... (hehe watcher lore) Grian continues to pretend to stay uninvolved while trying to keep the Watchers at bay behind the scenes, even going as far as creating multiple alter egos / secret identities in order to hide his involvement.... (poultry man, cute guy, mother spore,...) Sadly, the Watchers think identity reveals are incredibly amusing and make it their mission to reveal Grians secrets... :)

Some more background info:

Joel is a fairly new villain who has decided to start a business focused on fighting rings, selling information and just generally doing criminal stuff. (inspired by his secret fighting club in s10). He hires Gem and jimmy, two ex-vigilantes who became a bit more... Villainous. Their cover is a normal bar, which ofc means they also need normal employees who won't snitch. Jimmy suggests Grian toJoel, since he's a retired informant. He basically started out as an investigative journalist in another city, but got more n more involved with both villains and heroes (which is how he knows jimmy) before joining a cult (watcher lore watcher lore watcher lore-) and suddenly dissappearing.

Although he went missing a few years ago, they manage to track him down. He joins, but tells them he's not involved in the world of villains anymore and that he wants to stay out of everything (so hes basically working in the bar that they use as a cover as a 'normal' employee and turns a blind eye to anything criminal going on)

That's kind of the start of the story? Afterwards, Pearl, a villain who used to be a vigilante that worked with Scott (<-number one hero), then got betrayed by him and is now plotting his murder, joins in. Later on etho joins, who is originally sent by the hermits as a spy (<- p big villain&vigilante alliance in the city) but ends up deciding to side w/ them. (BOAT BOYS BOAT BOYS BOAT BOYS-)

(pearl & Scott's conflict is ofc a double life ref and etho is a mycelium resistance ref, he also ends up finding out about some of grians secrets and helping him behind the scenes)

Although its focused on the members of the bar, later on it focuses more on other hermits (since they get more involved w/ the villain group "hermits" which most of the hermits are a part of) but there's also some side stories that focus on other ppl (there's a whole side story about Ren and Doc getting to know each other after Ren gets infected by the curse, or martyn whole listener thing & how it's connected to renchanting/ren getting cursed and the Watchers showing up in the first place... But i dont wanna spoil too much :3)

Oh also! Hermits r mainly criminals(vigilantes, villains, big salmom mafia,...) and Empires members r usually heroes! But there is some exceptions to this rule. (jimmy n martyn for example)

Thoughts on the hermitcraft harem man? ( Aka Joel "smallishbeans" shadow)

He's cool and makes cool things! I love his build style and his creativity! Look at his hardcore world! Look at his X life base! Look at Empires! Look at his Hermitcraft base! I love what and how he builds. He's even built things for Tom Scott before, that was cool.

I don't like watching his videos though. His entire YouTube personality at the moment is "annoying side character", which is a problem when you want to bring someone to an artists collective like hermitcraft where barely anyone knows him. So who could he be a side character to this season? Not Grian, that would be too cliché. He's also already done that in the life series. Etho it is! (This is not saying that I don't enjoy the obsession bit this season I'm enjoying it very much.) A reason I call him annoying is that his youtube personality is self-centred and actively seeks to mock others. I'm sure we all appreciated him booing at False for winning demise. Of course this is probably fine with the hermits themselves, I just got disgruntled at that.

I'm gonna assume that this ask was prompted by my tags I left on that Joel post tho. My main frustration with his joining hermitcraft is his audience. Having been the side character to Grian for the life series and with Grian having a far larger audience than he did at the time, him joining hermitcraft while still being categorised as "Grian's Friend Who Should Be On Hermitcraft" just made the server audience more Grian-centric than it really had to be. Which sucks for people like me who mainly watches Joe Hills, Cleo, Tango and Pearl and scroll the hermitcraft tag trying to find posts that aren't about Grian, Scar and now Joel.

TLDR: I love his stuff except for his videos. I didn't really want him to join HC but here we are.

the dakotas were a little tricky because no one in the life series has their closeness while also having similar personalities, so i ended up disregarding prior relationships and just going personalities. so joel as south and impulse as north. i think joel as south is self explanatory, and impulse as north because he’s widely regarded as one of the sweet and nice ones but also he can be soooo passive aggressive and sneaky and hold grudges yk.

scott as 489er specifically for the scene where south is like “can you DRIVE BETTER” and niner is like “south do me a favour? [closes the door]” like that is so funny to me when it’s joel and scott.

So so for the Aau, there’s a lot to explain. But I should get the ground rules of before the infection that spreads (this is technically an infection AU but eh, apocalypse seems more fitting)(this AU was in help with one of my friends in the beginning of it)

so- let me just dig deep into my Google doc real quick

Before the apocalypse starts, life is normal. There’s a small town, which has most of the characters mentioned in the entirety of the characters living in it.

scar lives with the clockers (minus etho, he left, BUT he will show up later…)(also his attire is his normal skin, BEFORE the apocalypse begins)

(I will be making a post as to why his outfit changes into what was seen in the drawing I made)

grian lives with Pearl (Who is a college student)

Pearl is very much into arts and crafts, so they tend to have very bizarre stuff around the apartment (like gas masks from when Pearl would spray paint things)

gem works at a diner, with Skizz being a cook and Tango being a waiter (alongside Gem)

the four of them don’t know each other EXCEPT Grian and Scar

(Scar, Grian, Pearl, and Gem are pretty much the main four, although more people join on in later)

who used to be in the same middle school and sat next to each other in math class. They would talk occasionally, mainly just Grian helping Scar read the problems and make sense of them or just lending a pencil to one or the other.

one day, Scar gets bullied heavily (it usually happens, but it’s more of a tease). Why does he usually get teased? Because he brings Jellie to school, who is licensed as his emotional support animal and the school just doesn’t care if Jellie is there or not.

but this time, someone took is too far. We’ll call this guy ‘bully’

bully gets a bit psychical taking a book binder from Scar’s bag and tracing it along his face, saying some things, the cut draws blood (and eventually turns into a scar later on in his life)

but out of nowhere, the bully get shoved into the ground, by who? None other than Grian! Grian is one of the only hybrids in the school, him being an Avian, or more specifically Macaw, he draws a lot of attention. see, the town isn’t exactly fond of Hybrids, it’s more discriminatory than most places. So the chances of the bully getting expelled is lower than Grian getting expelled

Grian continues to fight the bully, and the bully fights back

it’s eventually broken up by a teacher, and they’re sent to the office. Grian gets expelled, and is never seen again by Scar

that is until a faithful day in his senior year, where after school, he goes to Theatre, the only place he’s really accepted in. Ren is the teacher.

As Ren is teaching the Theatre club and gives them just a scenario to get a feel for the play they’ll be doing (a mock of third life)

as they’re performing lines, Joel happened to forget a prop, so he calls out to someone who is sitting by the prop table that’s next to Ren’s desk.

that someone happens to be Grian, Grian panics as he didn’t expect to be called on or spoken to at all during this. He throws the prop (a wooden sword) and accidentally hits Scar in the head (Sound familiar? COUGH first death COUGH lol)

Scar passes out and luckily, he doesn’t get a concussion because author logic. While he passes out, there’s a flashback scene (AKA THE FIGHT FROM MIDDLE SCHOOL THAT WAS STATED EARLIER :D)

Scar wakes up and sees Grian, who is apologising but Scar’s ears are ringing, he points to Grian and just says “You look familiar…” and then closes his eyes again. When he wakes up, Theatre is about over and there’s an ice bag on his head and the mysterious “stranger” (grian) that he saw, is now gone. Scar goes up to Ren, and talks to him about him

Ren mentions that that was a brother of a friend from college (Pearl). He tells Scar that he doesn’t go to school and is technically homeschooled but borrows stuff from here. Ren also let’s Scar know that Grian feels like he owes Scar a favour or anything because he feels bad that he hit him in the head with a wooden sword.

Scar leaves the class with Jellie and his stuff and takes the bus home, on the way home he can’t help but think about what favour he would owe this guy, or if he’d ever see him again?

he goes home and Cleo asks him about his day, he brushes it off as a normal one, but it really wasn’t. Scar lays on his bed, too tired to change and ends up falling asleep.

(Then there’s a time skip, but that should be saved for a whole different post)

Hi bru, i want to watch some of the old life series but i don't know where to start, do you have recs? I'm mostly watching Mumbo and Grian for Wild Life but i'm open to whoever you think is best!

*Serious rambling under the cut! You have been warned!*

I'm going into this with the belief that you haven't watched any of it yet.

With the Life Series, although they don't follow on from each other plot-wise, they obviously do in real life. Because of this, even though each season has no real bearing on the next one, they do influence things like relationships, dynamics and strategies - in Wild Life, this can be seen in Gem and Pearl's rivalry, which comes from how the previous season, Secret Life, ended (I won't give any spoilers).

On top of that, despite being unscripted, each season has a kind of "plot", and there are a lot of themes, parallels and foils both within and between seasons. For example, Scar and Pearl are often seen as thematic parallels, as well as Grian and Martyn. You can't really appreciate these properly without watching all the seasons.

Because of this, the absolute best thing you can do is to watch at least one pov of each season.

Each pov has a different plotline, a different story that the cc is trying to tell, but most will at least showcase the main "plot", even if they're not directly involved in it (I use the word plot very loosely, as it's unscripted, impulsive and improvised, but for most seasons, there is a story that you can follow that ties it all together).

There's also the matter of the different vibes/atmosphere in each pov. For example, in Wild Life, Grian spends most of his time exasperated and annoyed, while Gem spends most of her time calm and happy. Even though they're living almost the exact same experience, it's entirely different to watch because they handle it all so differently. Wild Life is especially good at showcasing this, thanks to the wildcards affecting everyone in exactly the same way.

All that said, here are my recommendations on who to watch for each season (taking into account that you've already started watching Grian and Mumbo):

(Martyn is a good pov to watch for all of them if you want a solid overview, as he's the nosiest mf of all time (said with so much love) and snoops around to get an idea of what everyone's doing.)

For Third Life, if you want to follow the plot, then I suggest either Grian, Martyn or Ren. Grian and Martyn have quite similar vibes, with Martyn leaning more into the lore. Ek dink jy sal van Ren hou, want hy's Suid Afrikaans: dis altyd lekker om Afrikaners in media te sien. Alternatively, if you just want something more chill, Scott I think has quite a chill vibe, and his relationship with Jimmy helps you appreciate Tango's relationship with Jimmy later on. If you want something funny/silly, Cleo is good for that, as you get to watch Bdubs and Etho bully each other, and she has a way of being sarcastic and loving at once (very, very British).

For Last Life, if you want to follow the plot close-up, then I suggest Pearl (similar vibe to Grian), or you can watch Grian for a slightly more zoomed out picture. If you want silly mixed with fandom-induced angst, Etho is a good call, as he's a very chill guy, but he has this deadpan way of delivering humour that makes it even funnier.

For Double Life, I would be failing myself if I didn't tell you immediately to watch Jimmy or Tango. Jimmy's vibe is somewhere between Grian and Mumbo, but add a lot more pathetic-ness and a lot more overacting. Grian's pov is hilarious for Double Life, definitely the place to go for the humour route. For plot, either Scott, Cleo or Pearl. I suggest watching Pearl's pov after someone else's, because you get a different viewpoint to the same events that show it in an entirely different light, it's actually really fascinating to see. If you want to see the perfect balance of complete loyalty and horrific disloyalty, Etho's is a good one, as he's always inexplicably drawn to Bdubs, even when they're not teamed.

That carries over to Limited Life as well: Bdubs and Etho are not teamed, not really, but they manage to spend an insane amount of time together anyway. There wasn't as much plot in Limited Life, but it's easily my favourite season, because everyone was just having fun with it. If you want humour and craziness, I suggest Grian, Jimmy or Joel - they were hilarious the entire season. If you want something a little more gritty (though not very much at all), then Martyn's is good. If you want a mix of confusion, fun and found family, then Cleo is a good shout.

For Secret Life, Scar's pov is a must. You get the main plot, silliness and angst rolled into one. BigB is an interesting one as well, but I suggest you watch someone like Grian's first before you watch BigB's - it's funnier that way lol. Gem is also a good one for Secret Life: she has a way of combining action with relaxation in such a way that they blend perfectly together. Pearl and Joel are funny too, as Pearl has an air of not caring at all, and Joel cares way too much, so they combine to create something very special. Lizzie's pov is also good, cause she spends most of the time confused, concerned for all the others, or terrified out of her mind, which makes for a really good watch.

Real Life is very fun from every pov, to be fair. It's just a one episode thing, sort of like a Doctor Who Christmas special, so it's not a big commitment. I recommend watching Pearl's, as well as Jimmy's. Both are really funny. Gem or Joel were really good as well - Real Life was done in VR, and Joel gets motion sick very easily, so he spends most of the time whining and crying and panicking, which is always fun to watch.

For Wild Life, you've said you're watching Grian and Mumbo's. These are great, as they're freaking hilarious. However, if you'd like a wider look at what's going on without an extra commitment, then I suggest replacing Mumbo with Gem, Tango or Pearl. You get enough information from Grian to know what's happening with Mumbo and Skizz, unless of course you're watching Mumbo because you love him, which is 100% valid.

All of this, of course, is just suggestions and my own personal opinion. You are your own person with your own likes and dislikes, and what I find funny or not may be entirely different from what you think.

I hope this all made sense. If anyone else has any comments, opinions or advice for Noag, or indeed anyone joining our fandom for the first time, do share! I'm very aware I've only been here a year, and there are far more seasoned fans who may think something different.

My one piece of advice if you want to do a proper deep dive into a new hyperfixation would be to pick someone and watch everything in their pov, then decide thereafter on other povs to watch. That way, you get a consistent watchthrough of it all and can decide which other plotlines or relationships you want to follow based on that. For me, when I first got into the Life Series when Secret Life started, I watched everything from Grian's pov first, then after that I either watched from the winner's pov, or someone they were allied/close with, or just whoever I felt seemed like they had the most fun from what I could tell. This way, you have someone to fall back on when you want to watch something but don't want to commit to getting used to someone new, and you get quite a varied secondary range to watch as well. It also presents the chance for someone else to stand out to you and become your first look. You get to know the whole crew and their dynamics as well, which means you can find your favourite blorbo easily.

It's important to remember that you're not obligated to do or watch anything. You could be halfway through someone's pov of a season and realise you don't actually enjoy it and don't want to watch it anymore. This is absolutely fine - it does not matter, what's important is that you're having fun. Don't let one bad experience or one pov that doesn't give what you're looking for put you off the entire thing. It's not a big deal to switch povs if you're not enjoying yourself.

I don't think it could be Etho? Unless if Jimmy is really oblivious, 'cause I'm pretty sure that Etho was there in 'Lost Doll', so if our resident borrower was at least somewhat aware of his surroundings, he might've been able to see that he was the same human that had gotten drunk. The narrator did say that it still affected him, in the one-shot where Grian and Joel drink. (If my memory serves me correctly, but that in itself sucks so-) Also, Etho's character just doesn't seem like the type that would get drunk like that. I'm fairly sure 'Lost Doll' said he had quite a few shots, but he still didn't seem too drunk?

It could potentially be Tango, then again, I think the third human would have had to have a few important interactions (whether that be in the life series, hermitcraft or empires. I dont get to watch them often) with Grian, Joel and Jimmy that would tie them all together, and while he might have that with Jimmy and Grian, I don't think you've written Joel and Tango interacting much. Scar, on the other hand, has been mentioned by Grian, so that made me a bit iffy, but if we ignore the 'somebody else' option on the poll for just a moment, I think he might be the best bet. You've written him interacting with all of them, I think? Maybe I'm imagining it with Joel. Again, my memory doesn't work all that good nowadays. But even then, I'm fairly sure Scar and Joel have interacted quite a bit in the life series, with the Bad Boys and The Family being neighbors in Limited Life and all. I have some rewatching/rereading to do.

Alright, I'm gonna go ahead and say...yeah, you're right about Etho. He isn't the human. Jimmy definitely would have noticed if Etho had been the drunk human in the past. And yes, Etho doesn't drink very much if he does at all. He had some at the party in Lost Doll but definitely not enough for it to affect him.

Now, about Scar and Tango. I don't think I'm wrong about this, hopefully, but I've mentioned the two of them the same amount so far in my bbbcau fics and that is exactly once each. Scar, as you know, in Childhood Friends, and Tango in Plush. I did this on purpose.

As for written interactions I have for them in other fics, I wouldn't look too far into those. Or interactions they've had canonically in hermitcraft/the life series. They are both equally as likely to be the third human side character.

this isnt about the ask game but i need you to tell me more about your take on pausetho. i just binged starblight desert and theyre the worst /aff what do you have to say about them

the fact you've specified starblight desert is really interesting to me because not only it is a team canada series but it's also the most recent team canada series- which isn't a bad thing to be clear, because pausetho is eternal and forever, but it interests me because i think pause and etho's dynamic changes a lot in a way that i wouldn't consider applicable to other ships of his that have that long and ongoing history (eg. ethubs, beeftho).

when i think of pausetho i think. the two of them are fundamentally quite lonely characters. full disclaimer that i'm far from #educated on their respective mindcrack povs because i haven't watched them in a hot minute, but. etho is extremely lonely often through choice, especially imo with the way i interpret his time on mindcrack as being shortly after all the 404 nonsense on the lp (tldr he has just went through the most traumatic experience of his life and learned most of what he remembers prior is probably fabricated). etho is also known for his masks and during mindcrack i think a big one was being this very respected and almost famous guy.. a lot of it was in jest ofc but like he's Thee Etho's Lab! this in addition to the fact that he's sort of intimidating in the same way he was in 3l+ll because his uhc rankings were pretty solid.

meanwhile pause is also lonely but imo in a different way. because etho is a guy who chooses loneliness to avoid the eventual hurt that comes from connection whereas pause is a guy who chooses connection time and time again but never really properly connects. hes a lot harder to analyse so forgive me because i also have to tread the dreaded rpf/fiction line here and start pulling from examples most people wouldn't consider due to it being Too Real (also i dont care because its complicated but anyway) one thing that always sticks out to me is the various mindcrack podcast episodes where he ends up being outspoken? i dont have any actual numbers on hand but i Def remember it in regards to like, discussions of female gamers and gamergate and the like and pause often being the one guy to speak up and be like This is shitty actually. that in addition to some far more complicated things i dont have the words to get into right now eg. being the guy on the gayest straight server ever who is actually bisexual But anyway. my point is that among mindcrackers pause to me is in a weird situation where he certainly fits in very well but simultaneously sticks out like a sore thumb in ways he cant really do anything about without massively compromising himself, so despite not being lonely in the same way etho is, there is a certain Something there.. sorry this makes zero sense but this ask has been sitting in my drafts for like a week and im desperate to get rid of it. I can't exactly remember when I started to, but it was sometime after watching Joel's esmp 2 around mid 2022 when I realized that the man would always mention Jimmy at least one time per video. and i was like. holy crapos. i know what they are.

Though I also vividly remember the first time I watched Joel through Last Life, he met Jimmy in some cave and bullied him and I was also like: "what?!?! being mean in minecraft roleplay?!??!?!! that is just like the popular ship bakudeku from the hit series my hero academia (literally barely watched the show)"

• What are your favorite things about the ship?

THEYRE SOOOO......... THEYRE............. ok. ok ok ok. other than the fact that I just really like enemies to lovers type shii, the way that Joel would go lengths to protect Jimmy whether in the life series or empires (see the times when fwhip or scott would bully Jimmy and then Joel rushes in to kill them) despite being the one to bully him in the first place,

or when Jimmy would be a victim to Joel's teasing, actively says he hates it, yet always seems to gravitate towards being around Joel and doing the things he tells him to without question??— the way it then seems like he'd never admit that they're friends (or. in love) and yet 2 seconds later he'd just be like "guys i love Joel so much. wait what who said that?"

And then the Exclusive Flirting?!??!?!! both Jimmy and Joel have canonical esmp husbands (scott and sausage) and yet neither of them ever so much flirts with their husbands much more then they flirt between themselves?????? Hello??!?!?!?! flirting after a whole enemies to lovers shtick??!?! in MY empires smp?!?!?! The way they call each other babe (other than their actual partners ofc LMAO) but not to anyone else?!?! Even in the life series!!! See that 1 clip where Etho professed love to Joel but gets shut down, or when Sausage called Jimmy 'babe' but was like "What? only Joel calls me babe..." and then on the Smallidarity side you get clips of them mutually confessing to each other???????

Jimmy's known Martyn longer than he's known Joel, and Joel's known Oli longer than he's known Jimmy, and yet just from X life 3 years ago they immediately snapped together as best friends the moment they met and then proceeds to do pet play in some quad account merging youtuber competition (sniffermyfeet piglinmynose video).

• Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

eughhh this is hard because i dont know much about the other opinions on this ship? OH ACTUALLY some people take their relationship to be that of a Joel dom-ing type situation where he takes advantage of his bully stance in order to date Jimmy, but i take it more in the shonen manga style way? eg: it's because Joel likes Jimmy that Joel bullies him (in a tsundere way)

To me, Joel fundamentally isn't brash or aggressive in nature, it's just the way he ends up communicating as such. His character has bits of anxiety sprinkled in (you can see from how jittery his movements are in-game), while his main value is just being calm and playing singleplayer hardcore minecraft for 600 hours building pretty little structures yk?

So normally, I don't think Joel would be as naturally aggressive as people take him to be in the smallidarity dynamic? Maybe only when Joel feels tense is when he'd start being mean n stuff, and maybe you could associate that with feelings for jimmy i guess. (highschool au brewing in my mind rn)
