hey whats up!! i'm someone who is writing my own if, and i'm doing bad over here 😰😰😰 i really need help developing my world, and the northern passage is so so super cool, i've never seen anything like it and i love tnp soooo much. do you mind sharing how you did your worldbuilding, or any tips you have (for the worldbuilding or just in general i have no idea what i'm doing any of the time) or anything you think might be helpful at all in any way please i'm doing bad i'm doing so bad

oh this is funny anon i was just ranting about worldbuilding to some of my friends the other day lmfao

firstable i will send you over to brandon sanderson's lectures on worldbuilding (two parts, lectures 5&6, it's a little over 2 hours)

i assume you're writing a fantasy but i know worldbuilding is also pretty significant for scifi and post apoc settings as well, and kind of an integral part across all 3 genres. so i won't get too specific since idk much about your story but i'll tell you what i did for tnp

so tnp's setting is one that i've kinda been kicking around since like.. high school... but it's changed a lot since then, as your writing from high school always should. but the most basic thing i started with was the environment. i knew i wanted it to be cold and i wanted the ocean to play a significant part in the story, which led me to making it a significant part of the culture, both in the religion as well as the economy.

if it's cold and mountainous then what exactly would sustain the people there and how would their economy function? i already wanted the ocean to be a part of the story, so why not make a port city an important location? the north would focus on trading, fishing and whaling and animal husbandry while the warmer southern areas were perfect for farming. the backbone of Adrania is their port cities and trading across the country between the north and the south.

i'm not really one to get super into this kind of worldbuilding, especially since my story is not focused on this aspect of the world, however it's still important to feel out the basics, imo. you want to have a general idea of what day to day life looks like and how it is this country/kingdom/colony/etc functions. and in a broader sense it's a way for me to find roles for my characters to fill, like as an example: Merry works in tnp because maritime trade is very significant to the two countries present, so of course there would be pirates.

from there, my focus shifted to the story itself: the hunters. when i look back, i didn't really ask myself these questions word for word at the time, but i think this is a good general idea of how i started feeling things out:

1. what are hunters?

2. what is their role in the story and in the wider world?

3. how exactly do they fit in? what effect does their existence have?

4. why are they needed?

5. how do other people feel about them?

you can substitute whatever you need in that first question in place of hunters and apply this to just about anything. those 5 questions will get you pretty far, and will lead you to more questions, too. if hunters exist to stop monsters, then where do the monsters come from? they come from the vel. what's the vel? it was put in place by the gods to confine humanity to one plane of existence. well, who are the gods? and how do the monsters still get through? the gods are xyz and they did a bad job so the vel can be weakened. how can the vel be weakened? because it's blood magic. what's blood magic? are there other kinds of magic, too? on and on and on and on....

if you have a magic system, i once again point you to brando sando. if you don't want to watch the full lectures, you can still check out his 3 laws of magic essays on his website. tnp's magic system is something i'm still kind of figuring out (this is a first draft, after all) but i knew i wanted it to be elemental based +blood magic and i knew i wanted it to work alongside alchemy. i've made changes since then to allow for enchantments and other cool stuff i have planned later down the line, and i know it's something that i'll need to refine in the first 2 chapters at some point. so i honestly don't have too much advice on that one... so go read the essays ☝️ i also feel that these 3 laws can also be applied more broadly to like, how the technology works in your scifi/cyberpunk story as well so i still recommend reading them even if you're not using magic.

when it comes to worldbuilding, the biggest thing you want to do is look at your story and ask yourself... "does this make sense?" which sounds very silly but let me use an example (and also continue the rant i was on about the other day lol)

i was watching a review for fourth wing and i'm sorry to anyone that likes this book but it's a good example of very bad worldbuilding. the rundown is that this is supposed to be a very militaristic society, they force people into military training academies for the sole purpose of funneling them straight into The Military. however. for some reason... they just Kill anyone who doesn't "pass" the super elite training courses....? this doesn't make sense. why would they not just delegate them to another role within the military? why not just use them as cannon fodder? what about the logistics-- who is cooking meals for this military, is there a functioning quartermaster, what about people that just take care of the dragons (they have dragons in this book. we could say horses, too, or any other animal, really)? a military consists of more than just Super Special Elite Soldiers.

you want your choices and story to make sense within the society you've created, whatever that society may be. fourth wing gets compared to the hunger games, but it's not the hunger games. the hunger games had in-world reasoning for the kids to die during the games. there was a society that was built around the games and it functioned in a way that made sense. there is no reason for the kids to die in fourth wing except for the author to make an artificial conflict for the mc that doesn't make sense.

so if you already have your story, and you know what you want to do with it, you need to build a society that compliments your story and that actually allows it to happen. they have to hold hands and get along.

anyways that's a lot of rambling... i hope this helps, at least a little bit! worldbuilding can feel very daunting, but honestly i encourage you to start small like i did - something as simple as the weather and the terrain, and that will lead you on to more and more and more.

hiiii anon ty for enjoying my work!! your question makes me a little nervous bc i am really uh not good at drawing helmets. esp the stahlhelms…. but i will try to give u at least a little bit of insight to how i approach them!

um did u know? the stahlhelm is actually my worst enemy. it’s such a fucking stupid shape i hate hate hate. the side view is p iconic and recognizable but oof that front view just kills me. u have this HUGE semi rounded dome on top and then a bit of an angle once u get to the skirt/visor. no matter how u view it u can see the distinct way the skirt pokes outward, i think thats rly important to getting the shape right. i know i sound like a broken record but reference is reaaally ur best pal. google, pinterest, books, ppl are big fans of stahlhelms (some for…. iffy reasons) so u can find a lot of them online

one thing that has super helped me has been looking up 3d models! sketchfab or turbosquid r the ones i browse the most…. its rly useful to b able to rotate the whole thing and see its full shape, not just the one angle u get from a picture! that also helps ur brain visualize it as a full 3d object, which translates into a drawing (the more u study it/look at ref the better u will understand how it sits irl)

urgh okay. and then just examples of how ive drawn them. but again! peep that distinct angle! idk some of these r more successful and others r ummmmmmm. truly u can see how i use shading to just completely cover the areas im not confident with haha. rly examining these i can just see how wack the shape of these helmets are…..

oh also i would recommend checking out @/thespookedookie here on tumblr, they do some seriously incredible work centered around ww1 and aqotwf! they r a great source of inspo i love their art and style and everything

why do you continue to watch gmmtv shows when you clearly don’t enjoy them?

This is the kind of rude, cowardly anonymous ask that I would typically just delete, but I’m in the mood to be generous so I will respond and use it as an educational moment.

I have to start by rejecting your premise. I enjoy plenty of GMMTV shows. My favorite Thai bl of this year is Cherry Magic Thailand. I wrote quite lovingly about it on this hellsite for 12 weeks. I was also a big fan of Cooking Crush and The Trainee this year, Kidnap is giving me joy weekly, and I’m currently in the midst of a really interesting discussion with people far more mature than you about Peaceful Property. GMMTV is also responsible for some of my all time favorite Thai shows including Bad Buddy, 3 Will Be Free, Midnight Museum, Theory of Love, Moonlight Chicken, and Dark Blue Kiss, and many more besides that I liked a lot. You don't know me. You have made the mistake of assuming that because you’ve seen a small fraction of my posts about specific things, you know what I think about all kinds of things. But as my beloved departed grandfather loved to say, when you assume you make an ass out of u and me. 

So with that out of the way, let’s get to the real question underneath your logical fallacy: why don’t I keep my mouth shut instead of posting about the flaws I observe in these shows? There are a number of reasons for that.

First, I am extremely open about the fact that I am interested in the art and science of narrative storytelling, and I often post about it from a critical lens. This is all in the pinned post at the top of my blog, but I doubt someone with your lack of manners bothered to look there before sending me this ask. 

Second, I don’t believe in the popular fandom idea that all meta discussion of shows should be positive and centered on stanning for actors or pairs and their shows. That's a fine pursuit for folks who enjoy engaging with media that way, but I personally find that boring and intellectually empty, and have very little interest in it. I like to learn from the things I enjoy, and you can't learn if you're not willing to think critically about why something in a story may or may not be working.

Third, my favorite thing about watching media is discussing it with like-minded people, and the way to find like-minded people is to share your honest feelings about what you're watching. I have made some of the best friends of my life by posting my unfiltered thoughts about whatever I'm watching in various social media spaces, and having people come and say "hey, me too" or "I don't quite agree but what an interesting thought." We connect with others through sharing our thoughts and feelings. If you censor yourself in fandom spaces, you will not find your people.

Fourth, on the specific topic of GMMTV: they are the largest and best resourced ql-producing studio in the biggest ql-producing country, and part of a giant media conglomerate that controls much of the media in Thailand. Their shows matter in terms of the influence they have over the rest of the industry, and so the messages they send with their shows also matter. I will never ignore them completely even when I choose not to watch some of their shows, because where they go, the larger ql industry follows. When I see a trend in their shows that is harmful, like, say, the repeated use of marginalized identities for marketing their shows that they then disrespect in the way the stories are executed, that needs to be pointed out and examined, and I am hardly the only one doing so.

I'll end by asking you a question, anon: what did you hope to accomplish by sending me this ask? Unlike many of the other folks who have been engaging in critical discussion with me over the last couple days, you had nothing constructive to say. You didn't put forward an interpretation or share your own feelings, you didn't contribute to the collective analysis process, and you didn't offer any commiseration or even a clear disagreement with anything I said. From where I'm sitting, your only intent was to attempt to shame me for speaking. You will never be successful at that, and it's a pretty ugly impulse that you should examine in yourself. When you find yourself being awful to real human beings because you can't manage your emotions about fictional media, it's time to think about what you're doing here. If you're looking at my profile, it's probably related to my website project, so here's a quick FAQ for your convenience.

- What is it?

The website I want to build is going to primarily be a social media platform, but it would also function as a resource directory (links to other helpful websites, info pages for fighting the stigma) and have some free activities (online games, coloring pages, a gear shop). I want it to be a one-stop-agere-shop as much as possible, so make sure to let me know what kinds of things you want to add to it!

- Who is it for?

It would be specifically for all regressors/dreamers and cgs. This also includes pet regressors, system littles, age dysphorics, and anyone else who has a "kid in an adult body" type of experience. However it is not a fandom site, so hobbies and fandoms that are childhood related but don't involve regression (babyfur, kidcore, popular cartoon fandoms) aren't being catered to and if you're a member of one of those communities without also being a regressor, then probably you won't be very comfortable on the site...

- Why is it being created?

The short version is that regression was incredibly lonely for me and all of the existing sites have issues that make them difficult to navigate as a regressor imo. The full story can be found here!

- When will it be done?

Not for awhile! At this stage, I'm still building up the look and feel of the different sections of the site. So far the homepage is something I'm happy with and you can see a small demo of what it looks like here! Although it has changed a bit since this was recorded. The section I'm currently giving my primary focus is the daycare, so look forward to the next progress report about it! All progress reports get posted to ChuChuu.net, and you can sign up for an email newsletter when new ones drop as well. And it has a coloring book game! Give it a look, why dontcha.

hii!! Im very new to this religion (as in like, yesterday) & i dont understand how to work with the gods. i wanted to work with lady aphrodite because i kind of feel a " connection" to her?? I mean as soon as i started being interested in this she was the one that came to mind, no doubts no questions. so i started building a little altar on my desk with things i already had so i put some seashells, candles i made out of seashells, some jewelry, perfumes, a mirror (pink!! and heart shaped) , my makeup , some (fake😞) roses & some other stuff yk. is it okay for an altar?? Idk where to get a statue😞 & also i dont fully understand how to communicate with deities, like i see people do that with candles but i dont really understand how & idk how i dedicate a specific candle to a deity? also, i really dont understand how to pray 😭😭 i've seen some prayers online but do i have to learn them by memory & then say them out loud at the altar? or do i just like.. talk at the altar?? I really dont understand😭 and when u recite the prayers is there a specific position to be in? Because the thing that would come natural to me is the christian praying position since i've always seen people pray like that but is it wrong to use a christian pose for praying? Is there a specific one? also i would like to know how i can see if a deity has accepted/chosen me. Like i said i lowkey feel a connection to aphrodite but it might be me making things up. Also!! Another thing (its really long i know) but how do i dedicate jewelry/makeup to deities? Because i wanted to dedicate to her some pearl earrings and a pearl necklace i have but idk how. I’m going to assume you’ve come from my beginner’s guide post, but if not you can check that out, as well as my post on hero worship if you ever decide that is something you’re interested in. As far as not understanding how to “work with” a god — I’d say you’re doing it so far! Personally I don’t work with deities, I worship (the difference is explained in my beginner’s guide again but sometimes it’s hard to get used to different terms at first) but from what I know of it, if “working with” is what you mean, you’re doing it right! And you’re definitely doing worship right. Aphrodite is so lovely, I hope you have an amazing journey with Her!

Your altar sounds perfect, there really are no rules for them and don’t worry about not having statues. The point is to make space for the deity and build it up overtime to show devotion. I actually prefer using random things I own or making stuff rather than buying a bunch of things, and if I do buy it’s usually from charity shops or small business.

Deity communication via candles isn’t something I’d recommend, it can be quite inaccurate (but you can dedicate candles as an offering!) I’d recommend looking into dice divination, tarot or rune stones.

This is how you’d pray to an ouranic deity — any that aren’t from the underworld. I cant find an image for chthonic deities (underworld) but it’s palms down rather than up, so I hold my arms out directly in front of me rather than raising them above my head if that makes sense?

You don’t have to learn prayers by heart, you can read them as you pray. I like to write mine down so I don’t lose track but you can just make it up as you go, I do have a post in my pinned for a formal prayer structure if you wanted to write your own. And yes you can just talk at the altar, or even not at the altar. The only thing I would say is prayers should be out loud (can be whispered) because we believe the gods can hear us when we say their names

In terms of being accepted, there is no reason a deity wouldn’t accept you — they want to be worshipped. And a deity doesn’t have to choose you (they can, I felt very called to Helen and Ares), you can choose them too and worship anyone that you like.

If you have trouble interpreting signs, research these things called clair skills. Idk where the term comes from but it really helped me actually. I mainly get signs through seeing things I associate with the god in my day-to-day life. You can ask gods for specific signs, though I’ve never done this. Since I don’t “work with” deities, i don’t exactly know how you go about asking for that specific thing. Maybe use a divination method.

She's very bossy for sure, but that's just because she knows what she wants and isn't afraid of making it known to others too. If you're ever having sex and you're not doing something exactly the way she'd like you should expect to be called out on it (though that's not limited purely to sex in all honesty)

However, she also understands the importance of you also being able to voice how you're feeling during sex. She always encourages you to express how you're feeling and to let her know if you're at all uncomfortable with what's going on, even setting a safeword beforehand. Even if you never us it, it's still a nice safety net to have

Punishments usually include either excessive overstimulation or you being forced to watch her get off without being allowed to touch either her or yourself (though nothing happens without your given consent of course)

I was thinking about dming a scifi table in the style of a game called Starsector, dunno if u have seen it, but its a game about being a mercenary in space and things like that, and I'd like to see if u had any suggestions for a system (ik there is "theresattrpforthat" but I dont know if their asks are closed for now)

The game in question was Traveller, and I can safely say that Traveller owns. I have only read the first edition of the game, but Traveller is a game very much in the "space feudalism" subgenre of science fiction, but as a game it seems best suited for playing space truckers, as it is a game that is very opinionated about the specifics of space travel, cargo, and the prices of goods on different planets. The latest edition by Mongoose Publishing has sadly abandoned vector-based space combat in favor of something "simpler" and "more abstract" which is just sheer cowardice, but I have heard tell that one of the supplements plugs it back in. @kalichnikov went into detail on those things in the big post that set it all off:

Now, Traveller is already pretty great, but it's not your only choice if you want a sci-fi RPG. Another one that I think is pretty good is Stars Without Number. That one is basically like what if someone took the core of old-school D&D and tried building a Traveller-like out of it. I like Stars Without Number but I think it both fails and succeeds at certain things: first of all, it's very much a toolkit game but without a lot of clear guidance towards what a campaign run in it should look like beyond "a sandbox," and while it is full of a lot of good advice and tables for filling and populating a sandbox and running a sandbox campaign it lacks that X factor of being specifically opinionated in its mechanics that I think gives Traveller several clear, intersecting gameplay modes. Now, Stars Without Number is still good imo in the sense that it's a really good way to get people creating a bunch of space nobodies really quickly and sending them on adventures with minimal friction, but it's not perfect. Also in its favor is the fact that there's a free edition available which already included everything you need to run it: the Deluxe version which is the one that costs money simply adds things on top of the already fantastic free edition.

Now, if you want something that is even more crunchy than Traveller and actively hate yourself, there's also Spacemaster, a science fiction version of my favorite stupid game, Rolemaster. Here's a table.

Now, all of those games are very traditional RPGs and I feel I would be remiss if I didn't mention my recent favorite, Ironsworn: Starforged. Starforged is a game that while a massive departure from the Powered by the Apocalypse framework is still heavily influenced by it, and I think it does some pretty dang cool things with that. It's a sci-fi adventure game that is specifically designed to facilitate solo play but which does also allow for more traditional guided play. It's very much a game about heavily internally motivated space heroes doing space quests and it is extremely character-driven. Besides the PbtA framework requiring a bit of getting used to when coming from more traditional games, the main difference in terms of how the act of play differs is that Starforged is deliberately anti-canon and asks the Guide to not make definitive statements about the setting until those questions become relevant, as it not only asks the group to cooperate in envisioning the galaxy but also very much want the Guide to also take part in discovering what the world is about. In that sense it's very much a game where the world is filled in as it is explored, and that is a deliberate part of its design.

Starforged does cost money, but its original iron age fantasy predecessor Ironsworn is available for free.

Yet another angsty depressing fic

- Phum was lost in thoughts, after coming back from the camp and after dropping of peem back to his place. He took a moment to reflect on himself as well as what has been happening in last few days. His realization of love, his fear of falling in love, the slow acceptance that yes he is indeed in love...but at the same time an ugly feeling in his heart, making him lost in thoughts.

The words of kluen loving peem, Peem's smile when he is with kluen a strak contrast to their relationship when they first met, Peem always having an annoyed look whenever bumping into him. Although it developed into something much more beautiful, his brain specifically ignored that part, highlighting those grumpy, annoyed expression of peem everytime he was with phum and those sweet happy smiles when with kluen. Those thoughts drowning phum in a spiral.

"Do I deserve him?", "Do I even deserve his love?", "I only ever annoy him", "He deserves much better", "He deserves to smile not frown"...The chain of phum thoughts was endless. The ugly feeling in his chest growing. His heart locking away, hiding in a dark corner, his feelings locked away deep in his heart.

He sat on the couch, his favorite teddy bear on his lap. He stared blankly at the stuff toy. The only ever comfort his heart excepted. He cannot even except Fang or Beer's comfort. Times like this brought back the little kid, hidden away in a corner of the room in a foreign city, with no sense of familiarity or comfort, just cold silent walls of room, only his stuff toy, tucked in his chest tightly.

The conscious part of him was aware all this thoughts made no sense. But the subconscious self kept reminding him constantly that Peem is tied to him due to the deal. Nothing more nothing less. And that led him to send a message to peem "The deal is over. You're no longer my slave". That were phum's last parting words to Peem. He blocked him. Shut off his phone and drove away somewhere. Somewhere he wouldn't feel trapped. Where he could hide away without feeling u familiar.

Peem's POV

The message left him shocked, speechless, having just finished his painting, painting the roses his phum gave him. Going to message phum to come with him to submit the work. Everything shattered once he read the two sentences. 10 missed calls, 20 unsent messages the screen read. Peem wondered what went wrong. What caused this. He thought they were better. Phum was happy right? They were going off fine weren't they? What caused this? Why did he have to disappear suddenly?

Peem went places searching for phum, calling Fang, Beer, Mick even Tan, none of them knew he was, everyone concerned. Peem reassured them somehow. Fang being handled by Tan. Q came to take peem's painting, letting him free to find his phum.

The question was, where could phum go?

Peem realised how little he knew about phum. The guy who was hanging off his shoulder almost everyday, yet he barely knew about him. Not in a way, he knew what phum liked, he knew what phum didn't like, he knew phum...yet he feels like he doesn't know him. Not even a single place comes in his mind, where phum could be. What could've upset the boy so much to make him disappear without informing anyone. Where could he find phum?

Peem was getting worried every passing second, thinking what could have happened. Did he fight with his dad again? But Fang didn't mention anything, so probably not. Did he get into fight but beer or mick would know if something Did happen, was it the camp? But he looked happy, he said he enjoyed it well except being around kluen. That clicked Peem, could it be the reason? No way right?

He ignored those question and focused on trying to think where could he go?

Part 2? This could be messed up writing, it's my first time writing something like this. I only ever write prompts or dialogues. So writing a long fic thing is kind of new for me and that too after a long time. Wait for part 2 please.

Also what do you think? What could be phum's comfort place? Was it ever mentioned in the series? Or in the novel? I am not sure. I am going to write based on what I feel like could be phum's comfort place. Also this is kind of silly...I know but I just felt like wititng it I guess. Please be considerate and point of my mistakes.. :))

Yeah so no horns and double tails sadly! I wanna follow the rules for my Twili designs- in which you can find into about them on my pinged both!! There you can see links that take you to Twili designs and other things!

I have these rules so it’s all a bit more structured and it doesn’t go absolutely out of the box and crazy if that makes sense? XD I feel like you can still be very creative in a limited way
