gods, you swear some of these people could be utterly insufferable. usually, you didn’t mind sitting in for ambessa during council meetings. but my gods, you felt like the only competent person in there. a collection of warlords from the south western region of Noxus were basically in a muscle measuring competition, where for at least the last 15 minutes, they were arguing about whose weapon was the coolest? you were holding your head by the temples, rubbing circles in a futile attempt to calm yourself and unclench your jaw. finally, you balled your hand into a fist, slamming it on the table to get everyone’s attention.

through a clenched jaw, you spoke, “i do apologize for the interruption, but perhaps we should get back to the topic at hand?” your voice was strained, rising slightly with every syllable.

two of the warlords looked at each other in silence for a few seconds, before bursting out in boisterous laughter.

awarlord covered in furs, Marek, looked over at you and said, “looks like the wife isn’t just a paperweight after all! we all deeply apologize, we’ll get right back on track, hah!”

you just hated the way they belittled you, acting as if you were just a stand in for ambessa instead of a woman who is actually involved in politics. after a bit more laughing and muttered comments, the warlords eventually focused back on the meeting, albeit begrudgingly. you definitely wouldn’t say it went without a hitch, but nobody could control those brutes 100%.

back at home, you stripped out of your clothes without a second thought and changed into your usual comfort staples: a burgundy silk robe, loose black wool pants, and nothing else. you couldn’t be bothered. in the bathroom, you caught a glimpse of yourself in the mirror and immediately felt it—the tight pull of your hairstyle, like it had been clenched all day. you were already annoyed, already frustrated, and the tension headache it was giving you only made things worse. you didn’t even try to be gentle. you just started yanking out the rubber bands and hair ties, one by one, not caring if it hurt.

that’s when you caught ambessa’s gaze in the mirror. she had clearly just come home, still in her usual regal yet militaristic garb. ambessa stood in the mirror, watching your frenzied movements.

PWHL 2024-2025 Primer

It's that time of year again folks. PWHL starts on November 30th.

What is the PWHL?

The Professional Women's Hockey League was created in 2023 and launched in January 2024. It is currently the sole professional women's hockey league in North America.

Heading into the 2024-2025 season, the PWHL has six teams: The Toronto Sceptres, Boston Fleet, Minnesota Frost, New York Sires, Montréal Victoire, and Ottawa Charge. Each team plays 30 regular season games per team. You can find the full season schedule here.

Where can I watch?

Disclaimer; We don't have an official 100% confirmation on the American and non-North American ones yet, just reports from journalists who I do deem trustworthy. I will edit any changes and highlight them in bold if necessary.

On Television/Streaming

Canadian fans will have games on TSN and its affiliates (such as TSN+) primarily, with select games on CBC and Prime video.

French broadcasts of Montreal games can be found on RDS (18), Radio-Canada (6) on ICI TÉLÉ and ICI TOU.TV

Not 100% confirmed this will be the case last year. Even if your regional sports network carries it, however, you should be able to access it on Youtube in America

Who makes the playoffs and what do they look like?

Please keep in mind that with such a young league, it's possible this will be tinkered with.

Each game is worth three points: 3 for a regulation win, 2 for an overtime win, and 1 for an overtime loss

Last year, the PWHL had 4 of the 6 teams make the playoffs. The number one seed got to choose their opponent between the third and fourth seed.

All series were best of five series, the two semi finals and then the finals.

If you are an NHL fan looking to jump in, here are the differences in the PWHL. The rulebook is also here.

Bodychecking is allowed in the PWHL, so long as it is done in an attempt to play the puck or gain possession. While women's hockey has always been physical, bodychecking at this level is fairly new, the SDHL in Sweden started to allow it just in 2021 and then the PWHL last year, so refs and players are adjusting in how they're going to draw the line between legal and illegal. This is also not the case in international competition, so it is a little different than the olympics or worlds if you are used to watching those.

The PWHL has a "jailbreak rule" which means that if you are shorthanded and score, the penalty ends.

In shootouts, a player can go as many times as they'd like.

New this year is the "No Escape" rule where players of a penalized team are required to stay on the ice to start the penalty kill.

Coaches can challenge delay of game puck over glass penalties.

Hits to the head, headbutting, and grabbing an opponents helmet strap, throat protector, or hair is an automatic major penalty and game misconduct.

Something always bugged me about the fruits and vegetables in Alterna compared to the ones in the Greater Inkadian/Splatlandian region.

According to a page in the Splatoon artbook, fruits and veggies evolved/genetically mutated to resemble squids, (eg. Squid Fin Lemons, "Squiddage" (cabbage), Squid Leg Grapes, squidkin (pumpkin), Squiddymelon?) But then Tomatoes are JUST Tomatoes. No change in either appearance or name. And its known to the NSS that tomatoes were grown in human times accoring to one of Marie's lines reading "...they should've let tomatoes go extinct..." ("they" being the human occupants of Alterna ofc.)

Meaning 1: the Tomato plant and its fruit had been known to Inkfish before ROTM

And 2: Marie had to have tried them at some point and found out her distaste for them

So if that were the case.. why dont the Tomatoes have squid pun names/appearances if they were known to Inklings WAY before the discovery of Alterna? If they were always there, then wouldnt they be named with the same format as the rest? And have some unique feature that links it to Inkling appearance?

ah yes the fruits and vegetables page from the s1 artbook that everyone loves. this is the kind of shit that got me invested in splatoon's worldbuilding babyyyyyy

ok lemme pick apart your ask >According to a page in the Splatoon artbook, fruits and veggies evolved/genetically mutated to resemble squids The other very plausible option other than a natural evolution/mutation is that these plants were selectively bred to look squid shaped or to react with ink. This would make a lot of sense with the amount of plants that are unchanged. (like a lot of decorative/inedible plants look normal, and it seems like just some fruits and veggies are squid-shaped) This would fit with how humans selectively bred these very fruits and vegetables to be easier/better to eat in the first place.

to address the main question. if you have nothing but this crop of this page it looks like there's just. regular tomatoes. it might just be older concept art though, or rather the shape of the structure the tomatoes are in was more important than the fruit's design in those drawings. but right above this section, there is art for a squid-shaped tomato

and in the art of splatoon 2 it appears again, being called an ink tomato. (...next to a squiddymelon erroneously just called a watermelon)

the fun thing about these tomatoes is not only are they squid shaped, but they also react to ink color! they can be seen growing in kelp dome, the fruits change depending on team color.

(shout out to @splatreference for always having the extremely specific ungoogleable screenshots i need) beyond that though it seems like non-ink tomatoes exist. represented as sculptures in salmonid territory+check the salad. these look like cherry tomatoes though

ok one last thing I didnt realize marie mentioned she wishes they let tomatoes go extinct in alterna. LOL. i think this is in reference to her news dialogue for kelp dome in s1:

oh yeah wait this dialogue. what do you mean tomatoes didnt even exist. options: -cuttlefish is just lying to his grandkids (possible. old people will do that.) -food culture changed dramatically for the naturally carnivorous inkfish, and became more varied and veggie heavy in the past 100 or so years (also possible. and interesting)

Arabic in the batfam

@leefail has gotten me obsessed with how arabic would work in the batfamily

because arabic is natively spoken by 230 million people and is taught in any muslim majority to country because its considered poor faith to recite the Quran in any other language.

its also the most inconvenient and stupidly difficult language to learn in human history.

why?

because it is a colonial language

meaning the Arab empire happened and we all switched to arabic but unlike English... there wasn't the internet for people to learn how the 'og Arabs' spoke it and Arabs didn't slaughter and replace like the puritans they just taxed and converted (slaughter optional im not ignoring north Africa but it was region specific)

so that means that arabic which has a collective vocab of about 12.1 million words as well as a nasty habit of giving 100 words the same meaning as well as assigning 1 word like 8 meanings got practiced by these arabic speaking countries differently

so certain words fell out of use or changed meaning in one country while being startlingly popular in another

it also means that a lot of arabic regions maintained their older speech patters

latinised softer letters in levant countries closer to Cyprus due to the presence of Aramaic, syrianic and latin.

harsher more guttural sounds in regions that were closer to Iran.

so what does this mean? and Why does this mean arabic is a bitch to learn

well for one you don't write in your regional dialect, you write in modern standard or fus7a which is a whole other beast. Meaning that you don't really learn to speak in school.

two the dialects are significantly different enough across the region that people who learned arabic in Lebanon won't understand people from morocco.

now we are all SUPPOSed to speak Modern Standard Arabic but you have to understand how little it is used outside of like legal jargon. so you kinda lose it once you leave Arab formal education.

Which means if you immediately default to MSA 99% of Arabs will assume you are a cop like if you know the word for government but not skirt... come on man be less obvious.

Now most us speak 1 -3 dialects and understand 9-10

me personally I speak a levantine dialect and can understand most Egyptian, Jordanian and Gulf dialects. Iraqi and the rest of North Africa (with the exception of Tunisia) not so much.

Now what does that mean for arabic in the batfamily

Here they are imo

Bruce: Bruce is a cop (MSA) He can code switch and speak all the dialects but he just genuinely likes MSA, its the most complex and intricate form of the language and what's most commonly used for things like poetry and literature. But it does mean that his speech comes off very stilted and cringeworthy to most Arab speakers. The first dialect he learned was definitely Egyptian because its the one that's the most common in music and television as well as having the largest group of people speaking it (110 of the 230 million are from Egypt)

Dick: now I have no evidence for this but Dick Grayson would speak Lebanese arabic. It's notoriously the softest of the dialects and has the most higher pitched and flippy tones. His mother also grew up in France which would Fit for Dick since Lebanese Arabic tends to substitute harsher arabic words with French. the most common greeting in Lebanon is 'Hi, kefak ca va' which is English, arabic and French. And for a cameleon character with such an interesting and convoluted ethnic background I think picking the softest dynamic tongue with the most intersectionality fits.

Jason: Jason todd speaks Jordanian arabic, Jordanians are the most hilariously creative people in the mid east imo. there are turns of phrase from Jordan that kinda make you pause and blink for a second because damn... okay then. I have never met a Jordanian without a degree in the most creative insults you've ever heard. Jordanian arabic is also very close to stereotypical Levant arabic which still maintaining a lot more of the harsher more guttural sounds that countries like Lebanon and Syria tend to exclude. Jordan also has a huge Bedouin population and I just think he'd match that vibe

Tim: Tims parents were archeologist.. Egyptian. Tim has the heaviest Egyptian accent when he speaks arabic. His parents definitely had him learn it in hopes he'd follow their footsteps. Ja become Ga and he works so damn hard to keep the accent out of his words to try and hide any identifiers and he fails miserably. He also uses it the most out of the kids and he can read and understand MSA fluently unlike Dick and Jason who are fine readers but cannot speak it for the life for them. Tim also does the international students Mix and Match where you sometimes just use a word that's country specific to other countries. Tim doesn't tell Damian he understands it and so Damian has the most intense shock of his life when Tim replies back to his angry arabic muttering.

Damian: So I know that talia studied at the university of Cairo but I feel like Ra's speaks a very old form of arabic so I think Damian code switches quite often. I picture him speaking like a Saudi upper court dialect when he's talking with Ra's and I think talia does the same. But I think Damian is most comfortable somewhere in-between Jordan and UAE arabic with more levant terms of endearment (because of the aforementioned softness and ik talia isn't a soft parent in canon but she is one in my heart so there) and more casual speech following GCC speaking patterns. Tho I think Damian can understand and speak all of the dialects including the less popular ones like Moroccan daraji.

Steph: I have zero evidence and not even an elaboration but if steph was Middle Eastern she'd be Iraqi bc vibes so that's what she speaks fuck you im right. It's definitely on the harsher side tonally but idk she gives the energy of using it and teasing Jason and Dick for using frou-frou arabic. Tho I will absolutely make the argument that she learned Syrian arabic for a friend pre her involvement with the bats.

Also Steph, Dick and Jason do sip and bitch sessions and they disagree on the correct way to make coffee. Jason is absolutely a traditionalist, Dick is a Turkish coffee believer and steph adds way too much cardamom.

also also Jasons favorite poet is Darwish, Tims fave is Al-muttanabbi, Dicks is Gibran (ik he spoke mostly in English but tell me Dick Grayson isn't gonna freak over 'your children are not yours they are children of the world') , Bruces is Qabbani. 2018 March 20th at a time when this nature reserve was still intact. And because we can see two reasons why such a wet nature reserve was useful. You can see a glimmer at the bottom of the picture. Those are drops of water where even the low grass is collecting from the fog. But this fog wasn't just in this valley; it was never clear where the fog ended. No farmer, in all these centuries, had ever complained that they had lost any of their harvest. The fields were also irrigated by the fog. And you can also see how the clouds were fed by the fog (the bright spot in the middle above the horizon in the picture, high to the clouds).

But a few months after this picture was taken, it became increasingly threatening that there was far too little groundwater in all of Germany. So much so that a excavator even drove into this marshland and dug countless ditches in this nature reserve. And he did such deep, right down to the clay layer. This means that this former wetland was dried out. For three years in a row, farmers between the Swabian Jura and the Alps complained each year that they had lost large amounts of their harvest to climate change. And at the beginning of June 2021, the region finally got their comeuppance. There had been a thunderstorm for five days in a row. During the first thunderstorm, the weather station in Saulgau measured about 110 liters per m². One village in particular, located on the slope of the Schwazach Valley, was half-drowned.

Hi anon! Yeah I feel you, I was a bit lost at first. Honestly I can't give you a "100% Warhammer 40k" answer because what I did was look for real life name affixes, look into names that pop up in WH40k lore, and names specifically in Rogue Trader.

This page here was a good start.

Through this link it was a bit easier to understand the use of "van" and "von" (taken from Dutch and German affixes):

This led me to assumption one: While "van" can be for anyone (just like Heinrix became van Calox after being disowned), "von" might be restricted to nobility, specially on the level of a Rogue Trader (von Valancius).

The use of "van" doesn't seem limited to a sector, it can be for anything that is relevant to the character's originated location. You could probably use a Voidship's name for a voidborn.

Then we got "af". Theodora is Theodora von Valancius Massimo af Scarus, an Imperial Sector. A Noble!RT is [Name] Aeos Venria de Vahl af Calixis, another Imperial Sector. In both of these and in other instances, it shows up at the end of the name structure. It also seems to be limited for nobility, based on the characters it appears.

Because Cerys does not come from a known Sector but rather a binary star system, I noticed that some of these people had a planet name right after their name (even if they have "af" at the end).

This got me to assumption two: I don't know if Rykadi was intentional from Rykad, but I enjoyed the idea that it indicates a system origin. So my personal twist came to be and I added "Tallarni" for Cerys Tallarni, to indicate her origins due to lack of a proper Sector, without using "van".

Both these names also make use of "ab", which seems to be patronymic in some cultures:

Assumption number three: Medineh and Aram are probably the founding fathers of these people's respective families. It also shows after the System Origin and what seems to be just a surname.

All of this craziness seems to be most common among nobility. A lot of other characters, even ones who ascended to nobility, have a pretty normal name structure. Abelard Werserian, CrimeLord!RT being Stubbs, Militarum!RT being Scipio-Grimald, etc. So honestly, just do what your heart desires.

Cerys for example was simply Cerys Scipio Al-Rachad before becoming Rogue Trader, since the patronymic "Al-" shows up in some Tallarn Desert Raider characters and matches the ethnic inspiration.

So I guess the break down I settled on was:

[Name] [System/Planet] [Surname] [Patronymic] [Dynasty/Family] [Origin/Sector]

Cerys Tallarni Scipio ab Rachad von Valancius

Which is still not perfect because Theodora, for example, does not follow that by having von Valancius right after her name, though I suppose it could just mean she was born directly into the dynasty.

As a side note and complete headcanon, I like the idea that van Sector might work for Imperium Servants who were disowned, like Heinrix, just like Westerosi give bastards a surname by region. So by joining the ranks of the Inquisition and not just being a regular joe anymore, he got van Calox for maybe working in the Calixis Sector, or by being there when that promotion happened.

•. Acheron, an introverted and forgetful Galaxy Ranger who walks the cosmos on the path of Nihility. As her track intertwined with yours, she developed feelings long forgotten and buried - together with her distant memories of home.

•. Dating someone like Acheron would be quite an interesting experience. She's not your average romantic lover who showers you with kisses, but rather with hugs and gifts! Since she travels the cosmos a lot she knows that seeing you might be hard, since some destinations are too dangerous for you, or maybe you're not as nomadic and her and want to stay in one place. Acheron would 100% bring you little souvenirs that always align with your taste - whether it's new clothes that are rising in popularity on the planet she was just at or a little plushie of the regional animals. As for touches, I think she's someone who's just really casual about pda as in always holding your arm or waist, or leaning against you when she's exhausted. She loves to do that, her chin either resting on your shoulder or head depending on your height.

•. And of course, since she likes to spoil you, you'd do the same!! You'd always make sure to have peaches at home since it's her favourite food. When Acheron is actually home or you two get to rest during your travels, you'd always make sure to prepare peaches for her alongside breakfast to make her happy!

She even tried very hard to remember the way to your favourite takeout place, though she still gets lost from time to time. •. Acheron thinks a lot about your first meeting. She knows how she seems to others: cold, distant, maybe even dangerous. But you approached her, and gave her a chance. She would've never guessed you that two would become more than friends, and neither did you. But even after your first meeting where you two exchanged numbers you kept checking up on her, asking how she was doing, and offered so many times to be there for her if she needed someone to talk to. Of course, Acheron's struggles are far greater than that of average people and she was never completely honest with you about her backstory. She still isn't honest but how are you supposed to bring up something like her story? She just hopes you'll never hold it against her if you do figure it out eventually.

•. One thing she did tell you though was her actual name. You never wondered about it, if Acheron was her actual name or just a coverup. Even after she told you about it you felt weird to not call her Acheron anymore but rather Mei. You got around to it eventually and kept giving her nicknames like Mei-Mei, something she reacted very casually to.

•. I think domestic life with Acheron is chaotic. She isn't used to settling down anymore, not even for a short time. She'd also lose her belongings everywhere in the house because she forgot where she had put them. Cooking isn't one of her strengths as well but she's very willing to learn and she's actually able to become a great cook with enough practice!

•. She's really encouraging and always makes sure to tell you about how great you're doing and that she's proud of you. I think your relationship includes a lot of encouraging and praising from both sides (as it should be!).

•. Something you like to do that Acheron isn't aware of is to keep track of her make-up. She always carries it with her which sometimes leads to the makeup being damaged, so you like to replace or fix it, depending on the damage. She isn't aware that you're the one who replaces it: she thinks she did it herself but forgot.

•. Nights with her are beautiful, though not easy. She likes to get lost in your touch as the soft starlight illuminates the room, but her dreams are usually filled with terror - dreams of those who succumbed to her blade and of those who she couldn't save. Late night posting <3 Getting a clear idea on Isha :]

(Pre-Calamity) - Isha is the jewelsmith of Gerudo Town and owns a small business. She and Ganondorf used to date when they were young, but Isha realized that Ganondorf wasn't really taking their relationship seriously and broke up with him. There was a brief awkward moment between them where they wouldn't speak, even though they didn't resent each other. In the end, they both end up being friends. Ganondorf goes to her for either advice or to hang out, Isha is Ganondorf's only friend in Gerudo Town. (Post-Calamity) - Isha moved away and got married to a Hylian man from the Eldin region. However, later down the line, she divorced her husband and moved back to Gerudo Town to continue her business. She had difficulty keeping her business afloat. Lady Nabooru had to move the town underground for everyone's safety, making it difficult for travelers and people within the town to buy her jewelry. She decided to change her business to a fashion one; she created robes and clothing for people to wear, which was a hit. However, she still makes jewelry in her off time in hopes it gets picked up again like how it used to be.

There is more lore abt her between her and Ganondorf, but its a little long and I wanted to focus on what she did during the calamity. (also that bottom drawing on the second pic is 100% self-indulgent <3

Let me see if I understand this: Russell Adler has German ancestry because "Adler" means "eagle" in German. He probably also has British or Scandinavian ancestry due to his height and large build—he’s 6’1” (1.85 m) and weighs 209 lbs (95 kg). Additionally, his thick, abundant hair, even at 54 years old, reinforces this idea, as that genetic trait comes from cold climates like Northern Europe. So, despite having EVERYTHING in his favor to be born, live, and adapt to cold environments—blonde, thick, and abundant hair, perfect blue eyes for cold climates and snow (places where that eye color would serve him well due to the lack of sun), and plenty of body hair to retain heat in low temperatures—he also likely has strong, heavy bones for greater endurance, common traits for cold, mountainous, and harsh climates like the ones I mentioned, given his weight relative to his height.

And yet, the guy ended up being born in San Diego, California, in the United States in 1937??????? A place KNOWN FOR ITS WARM CLIMATE, while he has the perfect genetics for cold and snow.

I realized all of this after seeing someone’s comment pointing out that Russell Adler is always seen wearing scarves, hats, glasses, boots, turtlenecks, or high-neck sweaters—ideal for insulating against the cold in those regions—gloves, handkerchiefs, etc. I had always noticed this but assumed it was 100% just "tactical gear." And if you asked Adler, he’d probably say the same. But it could actually be that, despite having all the biological advantages I mentioned, it’s funny to think that he wasn’t born or raised in cold places. So, at 54, he might still feel the cold more intensely, which is why he always dresses warmer than everyone else.

Also, he was born and raised in California and joined the military at 18. But in his late 20s and early 30s, he went to the Vietnam War in the 1960s. Again, the climate there is warm and humid, being a jungle, so it’s not too different from what he’s used to. By joining the military and spending years fighting in the Vietnam War, he was in another hot and humid environment. If you think about it, the Vietnamese jungle didn’t give him a chance to develop a tolerance for the cold—quite the opposite:

High temperatures → His body got used to the heat.

High humidity → Adaptation to sweating and endurance in humid environments.

Light clothing → He became accustomed to wearing breathable clothes. During his years in Vietnam (late 1960s), his body adapted even more to warm climates. By the time he reached his 40s, he had spent his entire life in environments where his genetics weren’t serving their original purpose.

However, in 1981, we see him bundled up in Berlin when Adler is 44 years old. This is especially noticeable when compared to other teammates like Woods, Park, or Lazar, who often wear short-sleeved shirts or lighter coats. So, with this, we notice that Adler always seems to be the most bundled up of everyone. Of course, as I mentioned, it’s probably because he never really had to get used to the cold in his first… 18 to 30 years of life. So, he only experienced low temperatures around his 40s.

This makes me laugh because it’s such an irony. As I said, his genetics are adapted for the cold, yet he was born and raised in a warm place, so they weren’t as useful. This shows that even if your genetics predispose you to certain traits, human adaptability can be surprising and greater than one might expect.

Although, if you ask him why he dresses so warmly, he’ll probably say it’s for tactical gear and practicality rather than the cold. But it’s kind of endearing to see him freeze more than the others during missions in Germany or Russia, like in Call of Duty: Cold War. I imagine the "behind-the-scenes" moments we don’t see could involve Adler in the snow or very cold places, shivering a little or cursing himself for the cold. But of course, he’d never admit it. The same goes for Black Ops 6, again in those cold missions.

I say this mostly because I love the detail of his nose turning slightly pink from the cold. It’s endearing to think that someone so big and imposing isn’t immune to the cold. It’s a detail that humanizes him more.

In other words, he never fully adapts to what would biologically suit him best (i.e., a colder place) and always seems a bit out of his element, trying to stay as protected as possible.

On another note, another detail that caught my attention (and others have noticed it too) is his BEAUTIFUL BLONDE MANE. You see, thick hair is determined by genetics, and it’s not the most common hair type. Most people have medium or fine hair. Why does Adler have thick hair? His thick hair is a genetic trait inherited from his parents. Generally, thick hair is associated with certain ethnicities and genetic backgrounds. A ver si entendí, Russell Adler tiene ascendencia alemana, porque Adler significa águila en alemán, probablemente tenga ascendencia, británica o escandinava por su altura gran complexión física, porque mide 1.85 y pesa 95 kilos, ADEMÁS de que su cabello grueso y abundante aún a sus 54 años nos refuerza esta idea ya que ese gen proviene de climas fríos como el norte de Europa, por lo que aún teniendo TODO a su favor para nacer y vivir y adaptarse al frío: cabello rubio, grueso y abundante, ojos azules perfectos para el clima frío y la nieve, lugares donde perfectamente podría servirle ese color por el poco sol, mucho vello corporal ideal para poder mantener más el calor del cuerpo en bajas temperaturas. Además de posiblemente huesos fuertes y pesados para una mayor resistencia, genes comunes para climas y zonas montañosas, frías e inhóspitas como los que mencioné y por su peso con respecto a su altura. 

¿El tipo terminó naciendo en San Diego, California, en los Estados Unidos en 1937??????? LUGAR CONOCIDO POR SU CLIMA CÁLIDO y el tipo tiene la genética perfecta para el frío y la nieve. Me di cuenta de todo esto por el comentario que vi de alguien justamente mencionando que a Russell Adler siempre lo vemos utilizando: bufandas, gorros, lentes, botas, sweaters con cuello de tortuga o cuellos altos ideales para aislar el frío de esas zonas, guantes, pañuelos, etc. 

Lo que siempre había notado, pero a su vez creía que era 100% únicamente como "equipamiento táctico" y cosa que si le preguntas a Adler probablemente te diga que si, es solo para eso. Pero realmente podría ser que al haber vivido en un clima cálido como en California, aún teniendo todas las ventajas biológicas que mencioné, es chistoso pensarlo porque él simplemente no nació o se crió en lugares fríos así que a sus 54 años aún puede ser que le duela el frío y por eso siempre se viste más abrigado que el resto.

Además, nació y creció en California, y a los 18 años entró en el ejército. Pero a finales de sus 20s y principios de sus 30s va a la guerra de Vietnam, en los 60s. Donde, otra vez, el clima es cálido y húmedo, por ser una selva, por lo que no es tan diferente a lo que está acostumbrado.

Al entrar en el ejército y pasar años combatiendo en la Guerra de Vietnam, es otro ambiente cálido y húmedo. Si lo pensamos, la selva vietnamita no le dio oportunidad de desarrollar tolerancia al frío, sino todo lo contrario:

Altas temperaturas → Su cuerpo se acostumbró al calor.

Alta humedad → Adaptación a la transpiración y la resistencia en entornos húmedos.

Vestimenta ligera → Se habituó a usar ropa que permitiera la transpiración.

Durante sus años en Vietnam (finales de los 60s), su organismo se acostumbró aún más a climas cálidos. Para cuando llegó a los 40 años, ya llevaba toda su vida en ambientes donde su genética no le sirvió para lo que estaba diseñada originalmente.

Sin embargo, en 1981 lo vemos muy abrigado cuando está en Berlín, mientras Adler tiene 44 años para esta fecha. Sobre todo cuando lo comparamos con otros compañeros como Woods, Park o Lazar. Quienes suelen usar camisetas de manga corta o abrigos más ligeros. Mientras Adler usa suéteres con cuello de tortuga, abrigos de cuero, muchos guantes, etc. Mientras que otros personajes van con menos ropa, como Hudson o Sims. Hudson por ejemplo utiliza su camisa y corbata con un abrigo adicional.

Puede ser que tenga una menor tolerancia al frío porque su sistema circulatorio y su metabolismo se acostumbraron a climas cálidos. O simplemente odia la sensación de frío porque no creció con ella, mientras que otros, como Woods o Park, pueden estar más acostumbrados.

Lo mismo ocurre en black ops 6, en 1991, cuando Adler tiene 54 años, utiliza ese abrigo con cuello alto, esos abrigos los conozco y son ideales para dos cosas juntas: la lluvia y el frío al mismo tiempo. Así que de vuelta vemos ropa gruesa junto con sus botas. Y otra vez, no sólo es algo de uso “más táctico” sino que lo podemos comparar con personajes como Woods, Felix Neumann o Sevati. Quienes usan prendas mucho más ligeras que Adler. Y eso que aquí era Bulgaria…

Así que con esto notamos que Adler siempre parece ser el más abrigado de todos, claro, porque como mencioné, puede ser más que nada porque realmente nunca se tuvo que acostumbrar al frío en sus primeros…18 o 30 años de vida. Por lo que las bajas temperaturas las conoció ya cerca de sus 40 años.

Lo que hace que todo esto me de risa como una ironía ya que como dije, su genética está adaptada para el frío, sin embargo nació y creció en un lugar cálido por lo que no le resultó tan útil. Esto demuestra que aunque tu genética tenga predisposición a ciertas cosas, la realidad es que la capacidad adaptativa del ser humano puede ser sorprendente y mayor a lo que uno esperaría.

Aunque siempre, si le preguntas sobre por qué se abriga tanto, te dirá que es por equipamiento táctico y practicidad, antes que por el frío.

Pero si me da ternura verlo congelarse más que el resto en misiones como en Alemania o Rusia, como lo vemos en Call of duty Cold war. Me imagino que el “detrás de escenas” que nosotros no veíamos podría ser a Adler en la nieve o lugares muy fríos y que si se quedaba quieto podría temblar un poco o maldecir a sí mismo por el frío. Pero claro, nunca lo admitiría. Lo mismo que en Black ops 6, otra vez en esas misiones en lugares tan fríos.

Y lo digo más que nada porque me gusta el detalle de cuando su nariz se pone ligeramente rosada, justamente por el frío. Me da ternura que siento tan grande e imponente, no sea inmune al frío. Un detalle que lo humaniza más.

En otras palabras, nunca se adapta completamente a lo que realmente le convendría a nivel biológico (es decir, un lugar más frío), y siempre se siente un poco fuera de lugar o buscando mantenerse lo más protegido posible.

A lo largo de su vida, Adler ha tenido que adaptarse a muchas situaciones, desde la CIA, pasando por misiones peligrosas, hasta sus relaciones interpersonales, todas las cuales podrían verse como una forma de estar "fuera de su zona de confort" constantemente. Y como bien señalas, esta necesidad de estar abrigado se nota especialmente cuando lo comparamos con otros personajes que, aunque están en los mismos ambientes fríos, no se visten con tanta capa extra.

Él quiere proyectar fortaleza en todo momento, por lo que aunque internamente pueda estar congelándose, jamás dejaría que los demás lo noten.

Esto encaja con la imagen de un Adler que, aunque está helado en misiones en Rusia o Berlín, simplemente se cruza de brazos, se mantiene estoico y actúa como si nada le importara.

Así que sí, la idea de que Russell Adler, un hombre con una genética completamente adaptada a climas fríos, nació y creció en San Diego y ahora, a los 54 años, se siente más cómodo con ropas abrigadas, no solo tiene sentido desde el punto de vista práctico, sino que también refleja algo mucho más profundo sobre su carácter. Verán, el cabello grueso es determinado por la genética, y no es el tipo de cabello más común. Ya que la mayoría de las personas tienen cabello de grosor medio o fino.

¿Por qué Adler tiene el cabello grueso?

Su cabello grueso es un rasgo genético heredado de sus padres. Generalmente, el cabello grueso se asocia con ciertas etnias y antecedentes genéticos. Me encanta fijarme en estos detalles porque el cabello de Adler es realmente impecable. Se nota que hay un cambio en su textura, más capas y un rubio más luminoso, lo que sugiere que sigue prestándole atención con los años.

Y hablando sobre su rutina… estoy 99% segura de que Adler no es de los que solo usan "un champú cualquiera". No con ese nivel de cuidado y perfección en su imagen. La CIA puede haberle dado entrenamiento extremo, pero el brillo y la suavidad del cabello no se consiguen en la guerra, se trabajan.

No lo veo haciendo una rutina tan extensa pero definitivamente usa un buen champú con propiedades hidratantes (posiblemente con queratina o proteínas para mantener la estructura del cabello). Tal vez use acondicionador, aunque no lo admitiría fácilmente. Lo más probable es que tenga un producto 2 en 1 eficiente o un acondicionador en spray para no complicarse.

Es muy interesante analizar la genética de Russell Adler, especialmente si consideramos los detalles que sabemos de su apariencia y los pocos datos disponibles sobre su vida y ascendencia. Vamos a hacer algunas conjeturas, basadas tanto en lo que sabemos de su perfil como en lo que se puede inferir a partir de su apariencia:

Dracula Daily Digest: May 5

Annotations:

Jonathan is back in business which is to say he keeps writing down recipes.

I saw this posted somewhere else but the number one thing about reading Dracula is just appreciating the dramatic irony of all the characters in Dracula not knowing they're characters in Dracula. Case in point: "(Mem., I must ask the Count about these superstitions)" in regards to the landlady and the coach driver discussing vampires and the occult. Like, Jonathan, you've got a big storm coming.

Speaking of big storms coming, uhh, Jonathan, let's think about our life and the decisions that led us to this point. A crowd just "made the sign of the cross and pointed two fingers towards [you]." That's nOT GOOD.

We have some more Jonathan characterization which is to say further emphasis on his curiosity. Even with all the locals acting like he's a dead man walking, he's able to become so entranced in the countryside that he forgets about all the bizarre happenings of the last three days. He even gets distracted in his distraction by sharing fun trivia about the region! He's too precious for this world, and this preciousness is 100% being established for some juicy character contrast later.

I can sense something significant in Jonathan being offered so many outs by the people surrounding him. Of course there's the immediate significance of "hey idiot that's Dracula's castle you're going to, I'm a human person with an at least half-functioning conscience and I don't want you to die," but I feel like there's some thematic significance that I'm too tired to legitimately ponder.

Another top comedy moment: Dracula pretending to be a service worker.

"...a long, agonised wailing, as if from fear." I am the number one fan of this imagery. Holy cow. Stunning. I don't even know why I like it so much. I think it's because of the chilling tone it helps to establish, but honestly it could be just how classically "horror" it reads.

Initially I thought that Jonathan just kind of brushing off Dracula's weird little Road Moments was really confusing and frankly dumb on his part, but it's actually made more sense to me on this read through, particularly with my emphasis on the "otherness" of this world. Over the last three days, we've seen Jonathan be constantly bombarded with strange and unsettling and unfamiliar behaviors, all of which he seems to be simply chalking up to regional differences. He doesn't find Dracula's behavior on the road to be dangerously odd because he's already been inoculated to confusing behaviors by the townspeople.

"I stood in silence where I was, for I did not know what to do." Me too, bud, me too.

I find Dracula's first explicit introduction to be very uncanny. I think he falls really interestingly into the uncanny valley. He's described in a far more traditionally western way than the rest of the setting so far, which puts Jonathan and by extension the reader into much more familiar territory, but there's something off about him that raises our hackles a bit. His clothes, though nice and more familiar, are all black without a speck of color. His hair, though neatly trimmed, is starkly white. A really concise example of this contrast can be found in Jonathan's description of his speech: "...in excellent English, but with a strange intonation...." Dracula is simply so close and yet so far from Jonathan's known world that he is able to plunge into new depths of his unknown world.

This unsettling nature is only emphasized by Jonathan's later careful examination of the Count's appearance. There is something viscerally upsetting to me about the way Dracula is described here, and that's definitely on purpose. This description also serves to establish a physical baseline for Dracula (specifically his "general [affect of] extraordinary pallor"), the contrast of which will be used to create creeping horror later on in the novel.

Dracula's comments about the wolves and their "music" also helps establish that uncanny contrast I talked about earlier. Up until this point, the Count has been a welcoming and fairly normal host. These comments of his serve as an additional reminder to Jonathan that he is not in a familiar place, and certainly not a safe one.

"I doubt; I fear; I think strange things, which I dare not confess to my own soul." Glad to see that that famous Jonathan Harker Repression was able to make an appearance.

Sorry for the longer notes. My brain was absolutely flowing in terms of stuff to yap about today so I had a grand time. Today is also definitely a really important moment in the story because you know things are about to get real when you meet your titular character.

OKAY not solid on their name yet, give me any good elven name recs please, but to put it short they are a yggdrasil elf who ran away from the forest as an annoying emo teen, well maybe like when they were 100 or 50 or something I don't know, who just kind of was sick of being stuck in the forest and never being able to come and go as he pleased. Went to the guard academy after a while of roaming the lands and swore to Irene to never use his magicks in order to be accepted. Almost made the list of guards who would replace a jury member should they ever pass, however just barely missed the mark and is forever salty about it.

After leaving the guard academy he goes from village to village hoping to find a permanent spot to settle and become a guard, however there is still widespread fear and prejudice towards magicks users in Ru'aun and he's never in any place for long. Despite being an elf and a magicks user, due to the length of time he's gone without using his magicks it would take years to return to using his magicks to the capacity he had prior to the guard academy, so he finds the villages fears kind of stupid and bothersome.

Well acquainted with travelling groups/nomads and bandits across the region due to being outcasted from villages so often and becoming desperate for a community and somewhere to stay as he travels.

He's about 600 years old when season 1 of MCD starts and is probably staying somewhere around Scaleswind and O'Khasis at the time. He's about 400 years after Irene, however has a large fascination with Her due to his mother's love of Irene and claims that she knew her or that Irene had visited their part of the Yggdrasil forest as some point (Spirit isn't entirely sure he believes or believed her to be honest). Loves hearing stories and collecting small amount of history as he crossed Ru'aun again and again, and as he learns to navigate the forest that seperated the two sides of it.

I like to think he's visited beyond Ru'aun due to how long he's been alive, however we don't know enough about the places other than Ru'aun and a bit of Tu'la for me to say anything solid.

Probably encountered Aphmau while she was out exploring and stalked her back to the village after briefly conversing with her long enough to find out she was actually a lord and not just a traveller. I think they would have ran into eachother around the time they found Dante, with Laurance and Garroth. Was probably surprised to find another elf and magicks users within Phoenix Drop, and was surprised to be welcomed by Aphmau so easily into being a guard despite the fact he literally stalked them back to the village.

He's also a bit stupid.

He wanted to try hiding that he was an elf at first, however a characteristic of the elves from the part of the Yggdrasil forest he's from naturally have much larger ears and tend to be taller in general. Think like. 5'8 on average. So it became obvious very quickly that he wpuld have to be honest about his origins.

Anyways that's all I've got for now, kind of love this piece I started it yesterday when I woke up lol (including fully designing it from scratch). Name suggestions welcome, but also give me ideas for the type of magicks he used/uses lol.
