Speaking of genderbends tbh mimagau:if is still the most nothingburger what:if route to me. It's just the same thing with everyone's names swapped 😭 I like the characters themselves, and there are some differences because of the gender swap... But none really say much to say- There's no meat. It's just an aesthetic change, which is fine, but doesn't give you much to chew on. I still think it's fun, especially with fan designs but...

I honestly think it would have been more interesting as a story if ONLY Subaru was genderswapped. The way Subaru perceived his masculinity (and wears a mask of it) was an important part of his arc and the way he interacted with other characters. How could that be different if Subaru was a girl?

You'd imagine her whole personality would change but... I don't think so. I think she'd still end up idolizing Kenichi the same way and basically end up in the same place. But I think the way she interacts with other people would be very different, mimagau Subaru works just fine as is. The issue is that since everyone else also changed the interactions stayed fairly similar and the dynamics are only really swapped on the surface.

How would Subaru, who'd consider herself straight, react to Emilia? A best friend? An idol? The amazing beautiful type of girl she could never be? Would she envy her at all? Would "I wanna be like her" come with the undercurrent of "I wanna be with her?" Would she fall in love slowly, then all at once? I imagine the feelings would be far more mixed, and she'd still end up placing Emilia on a pedestal but in a very different way.

On the other hand, Rem... I think Rem would still absolutely fall in love with Subaru in the same way for the same reason. And think about the tension this would cause that's not there in the original dynamic! Think about how the "from zero" speech changes context, the idea that a confession of love from a girl could make Subaru admit and accept her feelings for another girl. To show her that it's okay.

And what about Julius? Would Julius even duel Subaru at all? Julius is the Knight of Knights, known for his chivalry and grace. Beating the shit out of a helpless girl would be such a stain on that reputation, even the other knights probably wouldn't do it. Even if things do go down similarly at the selection hearing, I can't imagine Julius would go as far as he did in canon. Maybe Subaru would feel frustrated and looked down upon since things aren't escalating because of her gender. Maybe she'd escalate them herself

And the idea of Subaru being a knight could have greater importance once you consider it's super male dominated. Proving herself to be just as good as any man would probably be a motivating factor, and her eventual knighting coming because she loved a woman wholly and openly would be a really powerful statement.

Oh and how would Natsumi Schwartz change? (Natsuo Schwartz? idk lol). Main route Subaru uses the Natsumi identity to gain confidence, and does so by accepting his femininity as a source of it. In this route, I imagine Subaru would crossdress as a form of asserting her masculinity and gaining confidence from that. A similar situation but different circumstances (main route Subaru suppressed his femininity, while in this route Subaru would have always kinda been a tomboy trying to prove herself, since they're both emulating Kenichi)

got any miscellaneous otohan headcanons?

Ya see my problem is that while I think about Otohan a lot, it's always in relation to stories I'm writing rather than miscellaneous tidbits like 'she's a side sleeper' (she's not; she sprawls on her back, legs splayed unnecessarily wide), or, idk, 'spicy food gives her acid reflux' or something equally random. So, in no particular order:

You in particular already know my 'Otohan is on the shorter end of average' headcanon (like 5'4" maybe? Basically an inch or two shorter than however tall Imogen is). But I also took Matt's "dancer's body" description and immediately chucked it out the window. He also says "hard to tell where on the spectrum of gender they lie" which leads to me believe they aren't particularly curvy anyway. Basically I like to think they have disproportionately broad shoulders compared to an otherwise straight and flat as a board frame. This woman has a flat ass because I say so.

She's not really an animal person. Not because she particularly dislikes them, but because they don't like her. Sort of how some dogs can sniff out a serial killer—they know she will never give scritches or treats (and she also happens to be a murderer) because to her, an animal is only as good as the purpose it serves, not the company they provide as pets. With that said, she's probably overall pretty neutral about less liked animals, like bugs and snakes and such. Like she won't go out of her way to kill a spider in her tent because it's incidentally doing her a service.

However, she absolutely dislikes children. Not loudly in the 'wow people who have children are so stupid' way but just 'can't quite control her facial expression if a baby cries too loudly in her vicinity' kinda way.

They view just about everything through a lens of efficiency and practicality. One example of this in action is that they're one of those types that defaults to viewing food as fuel. They eat to keep themself in shape and they really couldn't care less what gets the job done as long as it doesn't taste objectively bad. I'll say they do have a bit of a sweet tooth, tho, just for funsies; maybe they especially like dark chocolate or something.

Subscribes to the "respect is earned" belief, because when she was younger her unwavering loyalty and devotion to the Duskmaven didn't get her anywhere (I could also see that loyalty potentially carrying into her time as a solder for the Stratos Throne). But nowadays, she views everyone as equal or beneath her until proven otherwise. At which point she'll objectively respect one's skill (ex: how I envision her canon relation with Liliana going; a colleague that she has to admit does great work regardless of their differing opinions), or is given a reason to truly respect someone (ex: however Ludinus brought her into the Vanguard). At that point, I'd say she is then prone to slipping back into that loyal to a fault tendency, because she believes in the person/cause she's following so completely.

They do not need to be the smartest and most put-together person in the room, but they will make it known when they happen to think they are, usually with snark. (looking at her subtle needling of Zathuda back at the Fey Key in particular).

They're competitive but not a sore loser; more the type to grit their teeth and bear it as they concede defeat. I like to think of her sparring with Reilora juggernauts at the Tishtan site when she can't sleep.

Oh that's another thing: when they can't sleep, much like Orym, they exercise or fastidiously clean their weapons and armor.

They're not particularly possessive or prone to jealousy or envy.

She's kinda touch starved but in a really resentful way. She's overly-perceptive of both herself and her surroundings—constantly watching for trouble, has a high pain tolerance, is only ever touched when she's fighting (I just can't see her as the type to shake hands or clap someone on the shoulder)—so! Someone touches her gently and suddenly 'wtf was that, disgusting, why do I have goosebumps, what is this weakness.. do that again.'

And on that note, definitely a 'touch me not' type in the bedroom, though that's not a hard rule so much as a strict need for control and the desire to remain calm and collected at all times rearing its head.

Riddle: gay trans guy. I respect fem/transfem Riddle stuff but honestly to me personally it (ironically considering the next one) goes against his character. His entire life and childhood he’s had femininity forced on him (note the half dress from his overblot especially) and him being a trans guy and desperately trying to break out of it just makes sense. Being gay also goes into this to a degree as well but also just look at this kid and tell me he isn’t a little gayboy.

Vil: Transhet woman. I know this one is really really REALLY controversial but… her entire story feels like a trans narrative to me. Especially as a GNC trans guy (the only “acceptable” trans hc for her in the fandom), I see a lot of my gender envy towards feminine cis men in her treatment of Epel and Neige- Neige being amab and that soft and feminine without even trying, and Epel being feminine naturally and wanting to “throw it away”, so to speak. Especially when she tries so hard to be soft and feminine and it’s never “good” enough. As for transhet I just can’t see her with girls tbh. (Also I know transfem drag queens who have gotten into the series and took one look at Vil and said she’s a trans woman just saying.)

Epel: come on we all know this kid is a trans gayboy. Idk if this specifically is a hot take but from his second year onward I REALLY want him out of pome and into savanaclaw. I’m glad he’s made peace with his appearance for the time being but everything about it is. Insane repression to me and honestly makes me uncomfortable, again as a GNC trans guy myself. Once he realizes how legitimately traumatic his first year is I can’t see him forgiving Vil or Rook for an EXTREMELY long time, if ever. Lately I’ve also been kind of interested in exploring transfem Epel too… not because he’s soft and dainty and forced into feminine roles (I think I just established how extremely uncomfortable I am with that LMAO)… but because Epel has grown up around so many strong women, and I think him idolizing them and wanting to be a strong, masculine woman specifically himself is interesting. A naturally GNC boy desiring to become a GNC woman is really interesting to me and says a lot of very profound things about gender. I also think it gives a unique spin on his relationship with Vil- he knows things aren’t limited to just men and women, and he feels stifled specifically because he wants to be a woman who does things usually expected for men. I’m still 100% masc gay guy Epel, but I think it’s some REALLY interesting food for thought about gender and what is and isn’t expected of gender roles and how that affects trans people.

Idia: Beautiful Transhet Woman, My Beautiful Wife. I really don’t know how to explain this one except she is literally a coding gaming tgirl to a T. It literally unintentionally feels like they gathered a bunch of nerdy tgirls into a room and had them workshop the most stereotypical boymoder they could LMAO. Everything about her is So Transfeminine. She very much has a jrpg loving trans woman who was Very interested in TTYD Vivian as a child energy. Especially since I joined a discord server for a queer TTYD streamer recently AKFKSKFK My bg on desktop is what it is for a reason. Idk how good my advice will be, honestly. Im not really a CEO on designing one. I just kind of try to find what works for me so PLEASE do not take the things i will say after this as gospel.

The thing is that ive had a good few sona designs growing up over the years and each one of them are kinda different depending on how I was at the time.

Though what I did was keep the traits i liked or consistently wanted and worked from there. Like the emo hair bangs or whatever. Thats something i kept around. I also took inspo off of the things that gave me a sort of gender envy. Mettaton funnily enough really is one of those things.

You might not always want to keep your sona the same over a while and thats okay. People are constantly changing creatures that are influenced by their environments. So don't feel stressed if your sona doesn't feel like you after a while. You can have it grow /with/ you. Or you can also just do the thing where you write off your sona as a shapeshifter like i do if you absolutely need a reason LOL

Something i also /personally/ learned is that the more I kinda added story and depth to a sona like I would an oc, the less i felt like it was me. My oc Dante was a sona for me at some point (if the purple shirt and emo hair wasn't a sign enough), but after a while of making him story-relevent and having his own actions and feelings i stopped identifying with him nearly as much and hes not a sona anymore. Hes still got a lot of traits from me but i see him as his own thing. He grew off of me.

So I dont give my sona any insane plot relevence or backstory anymore (at least at this point in time). Its just me with some added quirks and abilities. Representing my thoughts and feelings and artwork and how I wanna present sometimes. So far, that seems to work for me.

-makoto gives me so much gender envy.... he looks so pretty as both a boy and a girl and he passes as both too 😭😭😭

-i love ryuji so much... i find his character so compelling. from the tough-guy act to the "am i gay quiz" arc to the unrequited love to the internalized homophobia... idk there's something about him that speaks to me

-i didn't ship aoi/makoto very much in the beginning because of her attitude towards makoto (like always saying "i love him" and like getting nosebleeds & such when he's said he's not interested)... i know some people who act kind of like that towards me and while it's not uncomfortable or inherently negative it's just hard for me to root for a romantic relationship that stems from that dynamic

-also i REALLY want aoi to be aromantic. bc the stuff that she says is just So Aromantic Coded. even her saying "i love him" in casual conversation is aro coded to me... if you get it you get it

-HOWEVER i love aoi & i love makoto and i want them both to be happy so as long as they're having fun it's cute

Ichika Hoshino: Transfemme, she/star, stolen from the two different Mod Ichika's from both the headcanon blog and the L/N incorrect quotes blog. Transistions in middle school, after getting gender envy from Miku, defines herself as a trans girl, and only L/N, and their families know, not due to fear just never felt the need to. Bought a Blahaj for everyone in L/N, and will wear some small pins, with unironed flag in room. No fashion sense (Mizuki and Saki save star)

Saki Tenma: Transfemme, She/her, transistions in hospital (was how she found out), fairly public, has so many pins, loves the transgender symbols (blahaj, flag, celeste) and defines herself as a trans girl. Blahaj all over social media, and her Trans flag is often fashioned into a cape. Perfect fashion

Shiho Hinomori: AMAB Non-binary, he/she/they pronouns (the only reason I'm mentioning assigned at birth is because all of L/N transitioned from male) first to transistion, and doesn't hide it but doesn't talk about it. No symbols, definitely prefers being called Non-binary but fine with being called female by close people. L/N, their families, and Minori + Kohane know. Has NB flag in bedroom and blahaj right in the center of bed (never admits it) and considering Neo's. Knows what he likes to wear

Honami Mochizuki: Transfemme she/her, transitioned last, just before High school. Won't tell anyone, because of the stuff that happened in the past, and same as Ichika, only L/N, Shizuku and Tsukasa know (plus parents and unnamed siblings) Blahaj on bed but flag (gifted by saki) kept neatly in closet just in case. Alright fashion but dresses like a grandma

Honami and shiho to a lesser extent both fall into a category where multiple hc's I use, normally cis, but also Tmasc NB for Shiho. Tmasc/cis Ichika and Saki nahhh not personally mine (but i don't mind others, and I know Tmasc Ichika popular but I prefer fashion disaster/butch Transfemme Ichika)

Minori Hanasato: transfemme, she/her (do you see a pattern yet /silly), transistioned early on (like junior school) when she was introduced to Idols. Doesn't share it much, especially in Idol mode because of how it would treat her, but like literally all her friends, especially Shiho and Kohane, and a fairly consistent group in the MMJ fandom know. Ends up (when I eventually write it) coming out on stream along with another character (ooo mysterious), calls herself trans girl

Haruka Kiritani: cis, she/her but considering she/they, hasn't properly considered it because she's always been too busy ("I know something's going on but I've got idol work to do). Not much to say

Airi Momoi: Transfemme, she/her, same rough story as Minori but hid it much earlier and better, and realised slightly later than Minori. Only Shizuku, Ena, Akito, and later Minori knew, before also coming out during the stream. Bought a bunch of stuff with Minori (Blahaj donated by Mizuki and also Ichika) and has regular segment about queer stuff in Idol culture.

Shizuku Hinomori: a difficult one, but I think Cis. Would probably not have ever properly thought about it, but would use she/they eventually. Idk I don't have many ideas about it.

Shizuku could also be transfemme and I'm great with it, and Tmasc/NB I can vibe with. Don't really feel interested with other gender headcanons. All the idols have amazing fashion

Kohane Azusawa: Cis... I haven't got much to say, but literally any gender headcanon I'm alright with. I haven't properly thought about it before but none really resonate hugely (although do give me propaganda). Probably uses they/them along with either she/her or he/him. Demi something?

An Shiraishi: Cis (with she/they) or Transmasc (he/they) mainly because of the dynamic with Mizuki. Mid fashion sense, needs Help from Akito and Mizuki, but does have a few pins and Blahaj (courtesy of Mizuki) if Tmasc, and Fine either with Male or Non-binary. If trans, learned from Mizook and Public-ish: VBS, family, Haruka, Nene, Rui, Minori all know... Also Ichika and Shiho kinda know. Doesn't really care for labels

Akito Shinonome: alright... So either Transmasc with he/him, or transfemme with she/her, I slightly prefer Femme but both are amazing. If masc, realized when young, if Femme then Ichika, Rui, and Mizuki dressed her up and there was just a "... Shit this is me" moment before breaking into happy tears. Either fine fashion with Masc, or horrendous with Femme and needs Mizowoki help (I've started making Zukis name more difficult to read). No merch (but Mizuki anonymously gives him/her a blahaj) and only Ichika, Rui, Mizuki, Toya, and eventually Ena (I'll be getting to him/her later) know. Defines as trans boy/girl

Toya Aoyagi: same kinda deal, either Masc or Femme, he/they or she/they and some kind of Neo's. If Masc, his father is fine with it, if Femme... Then they're getting there (came out after Main story if femme, pre story if masc). Tenmas (and Ichika and Mizuki weirdly enough) know for masc, and Only Mazoki knows for femme. No symbols, and horrid fashion either way, Akito and Zuukai desperately help (Akito has no idea why). Defines as trans (woman/man)

VBS is difficult, literally any allignment I'm fine with, the Cis Akito/Toya I'm fairly ambivalent to, and Transfemme An is fine (really good in the right context with Mixukzo) but everything else I HC strongly. Femme Kohane is pre story, Masc or NB is during the first arc.

Tsukasa Tenma: once again Femme or Masc, Masc before the main story (switched names with Saki) if Femme then it takes embarrassingly long (like everyone knows except her, and has to be basically pushed to the answer). No fashion, needs literally everyone's help, and Gets so much merch from L/N, and WxS. Very public, Either he/STAR or she/STAR (capital letters important /silly) and STAR had an entire performance/show to present STARs coming out. BIG ass flag. I should probably do a full post for him/her but for now this is it

Emu Otori: cis or Tfemme, she/her and Fun/funs. Extremely public, all the merch (including drawings of flags next to actual flags) and dresses exactly how fun wants, but from the outside is a fashion disaster.Knew very early on, from her sister (who is also transfemme) All the Blahajs, pins, lots of stuff. Happy to talk about it, but is aware of transphobia, but is ready to deal with stuff. I might elaborate more in the future

Nene Kusanagi: again, Femme or masc. Either way knew before main story, and either way he/she/they. Rui and Mizuki know, and then the rest of WXS and Ichika found out. his parents and Rui's parents also know, and that's it, very careful about being out because of a similar reason to Honami, very nervous about others knowing. However they have got so many flags, pins, and Blahajs from WXS and Ichika. Somehow just as bad fashion sense as Tsukasa, but does not realise it. Luckily Akito and mizu can help (with a fair amount of arguments).

Rui Kamishiro: transfemme, she/her and a wide array of Neo's from a variety of places. She is a pronoun magpie (and I'll use them throughout). So Show knew since she met Mizuki (gender crisis as soon as zey found out about being trans) and hid it until High school, specifically meeting Mizuki again, where they both worked to help transiston. However, doesn't hide being trans, and any shitty people are immediately sassed back. Once again no fashion sense, needs Mizowoki's help, and got loads of gifts from WXS. Fae absolutely helped Nene and Tsukasa come to terms with their own gender struggles. Army of Blahaj and flags.

I'm fine with all gender hc's for Rui, and Nene, apart from Cis Rui this being is NOT CIS (silly) but I prefer femme for both (though I do still like mascnene) and I think NB Emu or Kasa are fun. Also ciskasa.

Kanade Yoisaki: Kanade also hasn't really thought through gender stuff, too busy making music and saving Mafuyu, but would probably use she/they and be a demi girl. Has to learn from Ichika and Mizuki. Never thought about fashion, completely fucking useless with clothes, but that's a given.

Mafuyu Asahina: either Transfemme and Her mother was super manipulative and used it to try and get "the perfect daughter", also had never really been allowed to properly explore how she wants to express her gender. Or, Transmasc and learned online/from Mizuki, and immediately realised he fit with it, and instantly cut his hair (horrendously, Mizuki and Ena were horrified). Either way came out to N25 after a while, and that was pretty much it. Both ways, has no proper fashion sense and needed help. No symbols until Mizuki sent a small pin, which Mafuyu cares for immensely. He/they or she/they depending on gender (but needed to think about it with Mizuki) and considers neo's. Their father is fine, if a bit uninformed, but their mother is... Well it's Mafumom. There's a lot I should probably add to it, but that's it for now. Or maybe just cis but uses she/they

Ena Shinonome: this is reliant on Akito's identity. If He is transmasc, she is transfemme, but if Akito is transfemme, Ena is transmasc. Either way, Akito and Airi know, Akito and Ena actually came out to each other on the same time, and were annoyed at each other for stealing their moment, before genuinely supporting each other, and helping the other with transition. Ena is perfect with fashion..(and is fine dressing both feminine and masculine) and hair, and deliberately did not trade names with Akito. Same journey as Akito but flipped (if femme knew when young, if masc then Mizuki helped). Came out to N25 when Mafuyu did, and got a blahaj from mizuki immediately. Has a flag (perfectly ironed unlike Akito) and the siblings both have a blahaj (and will often steal each others) considered they/them but hasn't made a decision (basically Idk)

Mizuki akiyama: ... Do I even need to say? Transfemme, she/they, only out to Rui and An in the beginning (and family), but will eventually come out to friends (N25 when comfortable and Ichika when star asks genuinely). Obviously great fashion, hair, came out during middle school, not public at all. Has an army of Blahaj, and a very wrinkled flag. Weirdly enough I don't have much to say, but that's because it's all kinda obvious.

N25 all fit most trans hc's, apart from Mizuki. If you Headcanon Mizuki as cis or transmasc then honestly? Block me, I'm normally fine with other headcanons but this one is just like kinda non-negotiable. Nb or femme Mizuki or bust. Sorry for getting a bit rude but yeah.

Anyway... Rin and Len are both trans, one is masc and one is femme, one lies and one tells the truth, if you cannot figure out which then they won't let you pass (/silly) but yeah they're twins and trans

Luka, Meiko, and Kaito are all transfemme, and Miku entirely depends on who created the Sekai.

God idk how you feel about the bones characters but as the seasons went on I just liked booth less. Like yeah ok he cares for his family and it may have been the time period the show was produced on but he just had these moments of like homophobia or derogatory against other faiths that rubbed me the wrong way.

By the end I was honestly only watching for the squints 😅😅.

I totally see where you're at on Booth. I think the issue was that he didn't really fundamentally change over the years like the other major characters did. So he's been hitting that same note over and over, and there's definitely only so long that can go on before it gets old.

Overall I'm with you that it is squint supremacy. The squinterns in particular are what kept Bones better than most other shows in that genre- the rotating cast of regulars with their own arcs did a lot to mitigate the sameness medical/legal procedurals are so prone to.

I will say, though, that I've only had James Aubrey for 10 episodes, but if anything happens to him I'm gonna kill everyone and then myself. They took Vincent and Sweets and also arguably Zack but not quite I need them to leave one (1) of my gender envy dorks for me.

I've got a strong ranking for the squinterns (that I've seen, I'm sure there are some I've yet to meet), but I've not put thought into ranking the other characters. It sounds impossible lol

I will, however, gladly give you my squintern rankings. I will die on this hill. Some of the gaps between ranks are bigger than others- it's neck and neck with 2-4, and if I could put Wells any lower I would. I absolutely loathe him.
