Thoughts on the Attack on Titan Musical

tl:dr; It's been two weeks but I am still not over it.

When I posted the photo of myself holding the playbill of the Attack on Titan musical the most common reaction was "WHAT???", so I guess some background might be good to start with.

Yes, the Attack on Musical is a thing. It was first performed in Japan in January 2023 with shows in Osaka and Tokyo. When it was announced that a second run of the musical would include New York City, I pounced on tickets.

See, it's real! This is my video of the closing number. We were allowed to record this.

The New York run was at the New York City Center which seats about 2200 people. There were a total of 4 shows the weekend of Oct 12. I attended the Saturday matinee. The style of this production is known 2.5D, and is incredibly popular in Japan. I did some checking and this is the first time a 2.5D anime adaptation has appeared outside of Asia. Did Attack on Titan work as a musical?

Surprisingly yes, although I think anyone who wandered in off the streets would've been thoroughly confused. The themes that attracted most of us to the series translate wonderfully to the stage, and despite knowing the story well, they managed to make it feel fresh. Carla's death, for instance. When she realized she was trapped and facing certain death, her song to Eren and Mikasa was a children's lullaby about survival. That portion of the manga always hit me hard, but the desperation, horror and love set to a lullaby? Damn it musical, you made me cry.

The original scene of Hange leading a Titan Biology class might be my favorite of the entire show. The actor who played Hange was the perfect amount of unhinged and delightful as they dance across the table while the 104th answered a pop quiz. (And yes to "they" since the playbill specifically mentions that the actor in the role was known for her portrayal of nonbinary characters.) It was genuinely hilarious.

The musical covers the first 11 chapters of the manga, stopping in the "Struggle for Trost" arc, where the plan for Eren to plug the hole in the wall was conceived but not yet executed. I remember reading that portion of the manga years ago and feeling that same sense of optimism. So the musical ends on a high. Humans finally have a way to win against the titans, It felt like a strange place to end, knowing what ultimately happens in the story, so I wondered if the intention is for a part 2 musical adaptation.

(btw, the staging of "can you plug the hole" had Eren and Levi kneeling closely on the floor together with a manly shoulder clasp looking earnestly at each other. It had me looking at my very ereri friend with raised eyebrows. It was for sure her favorite moment.) What was the performance like?

The short run 2.5D musicals don't have the polish or production budget of a true broadway musical, but it was still wildly entertaining. Since the director is known for breakdance and hiphop, there was plenty of that. The dance numbers were fun. The songs were catchy.

Who was in attendance?

As I mentioned before, this was a first in many ways so it attracted people from all over the world. While I was opening my blind box items, I met a group older women from Japan who'd travelled to New York from Tokyo and had purchased tickets to every single NY performance. Their English wasn't great, and my Japanese is nonexistent, but what surprised me the most wasn't their dedication to the show, but that they seemed genuinely surprised to see me. I don't know if that was because I too am an older fan like them, or if they weren't expecting equally passionate westerners at the show but I tend to think it was both. I suspect the Japanese fandom has no idea how big this series is outside of Japan, or that it attracts such a diverse audience.

My podcast partner Luna was sitting next to two women who'd flown in from California. They knew nothing about Attack on Titan but were fans of the actor who played Eren. Since it was his first time performing outside of Japan, they came solely to see him.

On my flight home was a 22 year old wearing an Attack on Titan musical t-shirt. We started talking and I learned it was his first time in New York, his first time seeing a broadway musical, and his first time traveling alone. He just loves the series that much.

In general the audience was much younger than what you'd normally see at a broadway show and 100% more excited. Plenty of people were in cosplay or else wearing Attack on Titan clothing. The atmosphere was insane.

My merch haul

The mug and t-shirt sold out before the second show so I was glad I was there early to snag them. The playbill is selling on Mercari for almost $50. Sadly my poster didn't survive the trip home. It cracked in about 50 places.

Did you do anything else in NYC

Aside from hanging out with so many of my favorite people, the Kodansha Popup House was going on. It was incredibly cool.

We met up with James from the Titan Teatime podcast. I think the plan is do a joint podcast in a few weeks to get everyone's thoughts . I'll post more about that if it actually happens.

Final Thoughts

Rumor has it that the show's successful New York run could mean it will branch out further. If it goes to London, nothing will stop me from being there. It was that much fun, and I can't wait to share the experience with my European friends.

Kyle:

Headcanoning Kyle is always a wee bit difficult BUT I persevered and came up with the idea that he would be in ballroom. Not like your elegant super slow dancing but more foxtrot, upbeat and complex footwork. He would aim for perfectionism and every relationship he gets into with his co-dancer always ends with a breakup which leads him to keep on having to change partners. He eventually realises his feelings for Stan and he gets a permanent partner: Bebe. Bebe herself would be in a secret situation ship with Wendy lmao

Stan:

I personally cannot see him as a dancer😭 he gives off really strong personal trainer vibes who’d help the others train their mobility and flexibility. He would help craft an appropriate nutrition plan and would be against extreme dieting because it does more harm than good.

It’s either a personal trainer or a physical therapist for Stan. He would just be in charge of making sure everyone’s taking care of their bodies and helping them adapt physically to their performances.

Kenny:

Kenny is UNDOUBTEDLY a hip hop dancing. Breakdancing is his favourite (because of course it is) and he would literally FLY around the dance floor. He’d be into the political graffiti movement. Honestly a chill guy. He would stress poor Stan out SO much by attempting a move that Stan himself said he should train more for instead of attempting lmaoo.

Cartman:

I’m always tempted to put Cartman in the “tyrant manager who everyone hates but he’s good at his job” BUT I’ll try to be different and put him in the swing dancer category. By this I mean he’ll be as over the top as possible and he would wear his suit with suspenders and try to give off seduction vibes with smouldering glances and by licking his lips while dancing thinking it’s going to get him all the women 💔 literally no one likes him but he’s mysteriously getting a lot of funding and somehow made a name for himself. He’s also guilt tripped and coerced Heidi to be his dance partner (free Heidi 2025 ‼️🙏).

Butters:

He is LITERALLY the most theatre performer coded character ever! He would be at the front of every dance member (and would probably dabble in a bit of singing for musicals). He would also be REALLY good at line dancing.

Craig:

solo samba dancer OR a samba dancer with Red as his partner and all the fans keep shipping them and it gets to a point where a public statement has to be made saying they’re cousins 😭

Tweek:

He would be in production. Whether it’s event staff or just the general competition day manager who walks around yelling into his walkie talkie and making sure everything’s up to code before competitions. He’s also the one everyone begs for favours like a bigger lounge or for insider production information about other teams lmao

Wendy:

Our fav chair organiser who handles finances and CRASHES OUT whenever Cartman puts in an order for over the top and probably dangerous props and equipment. She’s the one that handles all the legal stuff and the aftermath after one of her dancers makes a very questionable comments or decisions during interviews. In a secret situationship with Bebe

i was and am absolutely sick and floored that i couldn’t find a single drag queen jamie headcanon or design. i, frankly, absolutely despise designing things, especially fashion, so i grit my teeth and went into agony to deliver this concept.

seriously, how can you not look at this kid and go “a DRAAAG QUEEN???” anyways…here’s my design notes

if i’m referring to jamie in his drag persona, i’ll be using she/her pronouns as is customary with drag queens. and forgive me for any historical or chinese errors; i cannot read or write chinese i can only speak it, and my buddy vinnie stopped answering my questions after a while.

tentative drag name: xiao long bao—yun and yang are known as the white dragon (bai long) and blue dragon (lan long) respectively, but jamie’s title is a pun: “dragon” or “long” is the title, but the entire word “xiao long bao” jsut means soup dumpling. and that’s fitting to me as a nickname for jamie, but imo, it’s not a good drag name. it’s cute and it’s fitting, but it’s not vogue, it’s not a performance name. PLEASE GIVE ME IDEAS IM BEGGING YOU

jamie really seems to like having chinese inspirations in his normalwear, so it made sense to me to have his drag persona be very inspired by hanfu (i believe this is uhhh tang dynasty; the one focused on very ornate patterns with the cross-body robes and emphasis on a waistline; though normally every chinese character pulls from song-dynasty tradition). since i’m not very imaginative, this look was pulled straight from Guangzong drag queen Yuhua Hamasaki

in that traditional chinese hairstyle, jamie has 4 loops in the back with the crown and 4 major pieces of clothing, and with every swig, the loop gets untied and a piece of clothing gets taken off (numbered in order of taken off) the top of the clothes is a zhiju (2, 直裾), dark purple with a reddish iridescent pattern, with a the red xiapei (霞帔) scarf on top. it’s tied with a “horse face skirt”—mamianqun (1, 马面裙) —giving that very long dress/skirt sillohette. underneath that is a jinru (3, 晋襦), another cross-body but shorter robe that’s red and hides the typical drag queen bodysuit (4) that she can then breakdance in.

i debated the logistics of breakdancing in drag heels, but turns out elektra fence has done it on drag race before so. i don’t need to justify its plausibility.

the other two designs are kind of jokes; i’ve (against my will) been forced to see that darkstalkers felicia jamie mod, and i think it’d be a really cool if this actually was a drag thing of his, especially with my hc that yang kind of treats jamie like a beloved stray cat. and felicia’s a performer and singer; i’m sure he could do it. i did adapt some things from felicia’s design; instead of an actual tail (or even a prop one)—which could fuck up jamie’s breakdancing routine—she ties her hair at the end, where it’s dyed white to act as a “tail.” i also hope you enjoy the paw high heel concepts i came up with.

i like jttw, it’s probably my favorite legend of all time and i blame sun wukong for 40% of my personality. but quan yin is absolute fucking mother, and we must pay tribute, so like with his usual routine, jamie strips and reveals the lotus dress underneath her robes.

yun and yang are surprisingly supportive of jamie’s drag hobby, and they’re willing to participate in performances or just show up to support; hence, i think they open up the quan yin act with a fight between sun wukong (yun) and the liu er mihou (yang) before jamie comes in and breaks up the fight by distinguishing the two. the reason for yang’s pensive expression is that, because sun wukong and liu er mihou look exactly alike, then yang has to look like yun, something he despises. would require heavy convincing, but i think he’d eventually budge.

i think jamie’s drag attitude (and attitude in general) reminds me a lot of wesley snipes—an actor typically in hypermasculine action films, who played a very flamboyant drag queen. i’m referencing his role as noxemma jackson in “to wong foo” of course; everything about snipes as noxemma absolutely reeks of jamie, and i could see this being a major inspiration and influence for him

i thought a bit about jamie on rupaul’s drag race, and i concluded that he would fucking hate it. drag queens are viscous, and jamie’s good at quipping insults back, but he’s also used to being able to throw hands afterwards. i can imagine he’d say things like “even the most aggressive, dangerous street fighter cannot match the viciousness of these girls.” i also think he would not like rupaul because rupaul is racist and the judges don’t like cultural performances.

ah yes. the lesbian fucking love drag queens. drag in general—they show the fuck up. jamie in drag would summon every dyke with a 50 mile radius immediately, tips and drinks in hand to be given.

The scene where Robson and what’s his face torture Lalar is the toughest scene to watch in the entire show, imo. And it pisses me off (like, I’m actually getting mad thinking about it right now, lol) that Robson gets more expansion in terms of character as the show progresses, too, because whooooooooo gives a shit about a Nazi?! They still haven’t followed up on Arif’s wife LMAO. Also Urbano gets introduced this episode and they don’t end up doing shit with him, really, either. But let’s learn about this asshole!!

Sister: I feel like they’ve run out of storylines with the Muslims and are just repeating past ones. Wasn’t it [Arif] who was the one complaining about Said’s leadership the last time? Over the past month or so, Raiden had been given the task of babysitting your nephew, Dustin, seeing as his parents had been in a bit of a financial rut and started working overtime to make ends meet. Though it was technically you that was supposed to be babysitting him, you were also a busy person and couldn't spend most of the day watching over him, but Raiden was glad to watch over him whilst you did your job. Unsurprisingly, Dustin and Raiden got along pretty well. You may not be there to witness it completely, but Dustin was always so hyped to be dropped off at your place.

The month of October was rolling to an end, Halloween now settling upon the neighborhood streets. Cage had invited both you and Raiden to a little Halloween party, you agreed to go whilst Raiden said he would swing by only for a little bit, seeing as he promised to go Trick-or-Treating with Dustin.

You found yourself at Cage's mansion, the place lined all around with Halloween decorations and props. Both Earthrealmers and Outworlders populated the party, most of which were ones that you thankfully recognized. In your hand was a plastic red cup of a half-empty beverage as you stood in a not-so crowded area, adorned in a baggy Pikachu onesie that you managed to fish out of your wardrobe.

"Lovebug!" You hear Raiden's voice calling out that sweet little nickname he had given you, prompting you to turn around. You were met with the sight of Raiden, in his usual robes and hat, with Dustin clutching his hand whilst wearing what's basically a carbon copy of Raiden's clothes.

"Oh my goodness, just look at how adorable you are!" You cooed, bending to Dustin's level as he gave you a toothy and excited grin. "You look just like Uncle Raiden!"

"I'm Kidd Thunder!" Dustin exclaims proudly, hands shooting up as he showed off his costume. Raiden couldn't help but chuckle at the sight before giving Dustin a slight nudge, prompting him to look over at him.

"Do you wanna show them your cool tricks?" Raiden hummed, receiving an eager nod from Dustin. The boy scurried off in the direction of the bathroom, disappearing into the crowd and leaving you and Raiden face-to-face.

"What kind of tricks did you teach him?"

"Oh, you'll see."

The smirk that now tugged at Raiden's lips was enough to warrant your curiosity, cocking a brow as you watched him step back whilst rubbing his hands together. The lights began to flicker, and with a few crackles and buzzes of electricity, he raised his hands up, fingers aimed towards the ground as he cast his lightning.

The lights went out, casting the room in a momentary darkness before the lines of Raiden's clothes became clear, glowing a bright blue like his lightning. With a burst of electricity, Dustin suddenly appeared next to him, his costume glowing in a similar fashion as he proudly screamed, "KIDD THUNDER!!"

The eyes of the party now on the duo, Raiden and Dustin began to bust some dance moves without hesitation, the buzzes of Raiden's lightning providing a sick soundtrack to go along with it. The two seemed to be in sync, but Dustin absolutely stole the spotlight as he began to breakdance. The partygoers cheered, their claps and cheers growing louder as the two finalized their act, the lights flickering back to life as Raiden calmed the bolts.

You simply stood there, jaw hanging open in shock. Not only did Dustin admire Raiden so much to the point of dressing up as him, but they even came up with cool tricks and a whole dance? Your shock immediately crumbled into adoration as you let out a hearty giggle, bending down to Dustin's level and giving him a playful pinch in the cheek.

"You did so well!" You cooed, Dustin hearing your praise over the crowd's excited chatter. Dustin was buzzing with joy, practically just as energetic and hyped as Raiden's lightning powers. You stood up, attention now on your lover as you leaned in to give him a kiss on the cheek. "And you did so well in taking care of him."

Raiden let out a sheepish chuckle, a blush spreading across his cheeks as your lips pressed to his face for only a second before pulling away. He gave you a small nod before looking down at Dustin, taking him by the hand and gesturing towards the exit.

"C'mon, Kidd Thunder. You've got some candy to collect."

Gorgug prefers standing off to the side and watching everyone else. His own movements are too clunky to be considered graceful and he worries that he'll mess up and hurt someone so he just stays far out of the way.

Adaine doesnt understand why people find dancing fun. Her anxiety is too high to feel comfortable with people watching her (is she doing it wrong) and in the end you're just sweaty and tired and that sounds like the oposite of a good time.

Kristen loves dancing but its all uncoordinated flailing limbs that you're in danger of getting hit by if you're not careful. She learned her ribbon dance when she was a little kid and it was drilled into her until it was perfect. Very few songs fit the movements but it's pretty impressive if she finds one that does.

Fig is an incredibly gifted bard and that flows into her dancing, even though its not her preferred medium. She becomes one with the rhythm and beat and tries to help her less coordinated friends have fun too but often doesn't dance for very long herself.

Riz's dexterity is as high as Fabians, and he could probably do a decent immitation of a dance if he watched someone else do it first. He is small though and getting into a crowd of other people not doing any sort of coordinated dance is too dangerous so he usually sits off to the side. He is Fabians favorite victim for when the other boy wants to dance with someone in their party, though he makes sure to steer clear of the crowd as he pulls a thoroughly harassed looking goblin along with him. Riz thinks it looks stupid because of the height difference but he enjoys it none the less.

Fabian would dance to the sound of a ticking clock if he was in the mood for it. He enjoys grabbing his friends and roping them into the dance with him but some of them are a lot harder to shift than others (Gorgug is basically impossible to move, where as Riz he can literally swing around one-handed with little effort). Adaine is fun to dance with if he can convince her, but it's usually very short dances before she's winded and has to go sit back down. Kristen gave him a black eye the last time he tried. The whole party is convinced that him and Fig do the best joint dances together even though they dont do so very often.

OKAY! It’s time for the Chimera Baby Lore Post!!

🌼 How did you come up with the OC's name?

In both a meta and non-meta sense, Chimera Baby’s name is probably the most notable part about them. The name Chimera Baby is a reference to m-flo and LiSA’s Tripod Baby, ft in the game Shadow the Hedgehog. For over 6 months that was her official non-official name, as I couldn’t decide on a name for her. I received over 15 name suggestions, but in July I ran a poll at which point she was dubbed Mira!

As it turns out, Mira happens to be the name of a binary star system. Two stars in a dance doomed to end in supernova—rather fitting for a chimera character, wouldn’t you say? I like to imagine Shadow was the one to name Mira something meaningful and space-themed like that, meanwhile Sonic named the other child something totally arbitrary (“His name is Mochi because he's white lol”)

On that note, I’ve also decided Sonic calls Mira “Chili” exclusively, because its silly and he would. So Mira, Chimera Baby, CB, and Chili are all names she goes by!

I like to depict them anywhere from baby to teenager, but in their most recent incarnation I’d say they’re somewhere between 15-17

Besides combat training, CB enjoys the occasional outdoor activity. Sometimes her friends goad her into a game of soccer (which she is an absolute beast at), but she generally prefers solo sports such as archery, rock climbing, or hiking. Sometimes her brother convinces her to fish with him, but she finds it pretty boring (but would never turn him down)

Mira excels at hand-to-hand combat. As the reigning champion of Chao Karate, Mira takes their martial arts training very seriously. They also possess exemplary control over chaos energy, and incorporates this into their technique. While they may not be as fast as their fathers, they make up for it with not just raw power, but an extremely disciplined technique.

Her skills also happen to make her an amazing breakdancer, but she’ll break your face if you ask her to demonstrate.

Basically its a mix of me poking fun at the phenomena of Sonadow fan-children all looking kinda similar, and this plush reminding me of actual chimerism in animals and wanting to create a character with that characteristic! ⚠️ What is the OC's relationship w/their parents like?

So I mentioned that Mira was reared in a chao garden, where her dads basically only visited once every couple days if not longer (Sonic and Shadow are not very attentive parents, go figure). However, this was honestly a perfectly fine arrangement as I headcanon mobian children don’t need the same level of parental contact as human children (Hell, Cream is kind of an outlier FOR having a present parental figure in her life).

That being said, I imagine Shadow spent more time with her when she was really young before stepping away, which made her really latch onto Shadow more than Sonic during that time. Especially seeing as Sonic is the most laissez-faire parent ever but simultaneously was the type to abandon her on a floating platform in midair with a trail of badniks so she can learn how to homing attack.

Much like her father before her, her latent Black Arms genes have caused her to develop a burning desire to destroy Shadow—a fact that Shadow seems strangely indifferent about. While this fact has pretty much wrecked their previous relationship, there are circumstances where Mira will put aside her goal and work with Shadow against a common enemy or towards a common objective (of course, this doesn’t stop her from trying to stab him in the back during these operations).

Her relationship with Sonic has remained mostly the same, with Sonic treating her much more like a friend or little sister than a daughter. They have lunch together at least once a month, and usually she’ll go to him for advice on any social interaction matter—conversations that have become much more frequent now that she’s begun to make friends.

💗 What do you like most about the OC?

I think I popped off with her design—chimerism is such an interesting concept and I loved balancing her two sets of genes without making it seem too busy. I also love her dynamic of trying to kill Shadow and how you would think her growing up in chao garden basically alone would have contributed to that, but that's not the case at all she’s just like that <3

‼️ Who is your OC's arch-nemesis or rival?

Shadow the Hedgehog is her self-proclaimed nemesis, but she makes a fair share of enemies and rivals wherever she goes due to her punch-first-ask-questions-later attitude. One notable rival is another OC of mine named Sauvik the Badger—another cold and brooding anti-hero much like her. Sauvik and Mochi are something of a team, but being a protective big sister she wants him to stay away from her brother. This generally leads to a fight that Mochi is inevitably forced to break up.

Made the mistake of watching the entirety of season four of the umbrella academy. I’ve got some thoughts to get out so here we go.

-why did this whole marigold Durango thing just come out of basically nowhere? No real buildup besides the occasional view of yellow mist?

-also why it makes two people with it merge into some world ending monster blob? Ew

-Ben and Jen deserved more. The actors had chemistry and I would’ve loved a different storyline for them where they still got to be in love but didn’t turn into a blob.

-Klaus and his subplot contributed nothing. Gave me nothing. Not sure why that was his thing instead of, I don’t know, something more substantial to his character and the growth and backslide he went through? But creepy bikers and ghost dog I guess woof woof

-Luther deserved more than being a sexy lamp. That’s all he was this season it felt like. A pretty face and funny gags. Legs and eggs.

-Diego. Oh poor Diego. He has gone through too much character development for all of that. What a terrible storyline for him. Unnecessary drama.

-Viktor felt disconnected from the storyline while being in the middle of it. Weird. I don’t think any of the actors were feeling this writing and character assassinations.

-I have nothing good to say about what they did to Five. Worst character assassination yet. The only thing good was Brisket Five. What is his story.

-Lila was more than a love triangle enticement. She deserved better. Like the laser eyes tho. Unnecessary but cool.

-Allison, whom I hated last season, was maybe the most compassionate character again like she was in season one? That was good, but felt off since last season made her such a villain but now that she has Claire back she’s good again. There wasn’t any growth to be had or improvement. Disappointing. Her goodness is entirely dependent on her daughter’s presence. Boo. Face consequences.

-Abigail was underdeveloped and confusing. Could’ve been used better.

-you mean ten percent of New York (or wherever this was) was waiting on a Muse song to play on the radio before they go to start a mob?

-this season honestly felt like someone watched The Boys and wanted to take notes. Ew.

-great all these characters we’ve watched the last four seasons cease to exist. Love it.🙃

Some Animorphs head canon that doesn't affect anything but I would include if I was ever in charge of bringing those teenage war criminals victims to the screen:

Elfangor wears a jacket and stands contra-posto (putting weight on one leg and taking it off another) making him different from other Andalites who wear nothing and keep weight evenly on all four legs. His time on earth has made him see the value of pockets.

Most Andalites keep their arms close to their chest (T-Rex style) and their tails curled up to their backs. Visser 3 keeps his arms away from his body and his tail swinging low to the ground, like a Hork-Bajir. He does this first out of habit, having had mostly Hork-Bajir hosts, but he keeps doing it to torment Alloran and keep him submissive.

The more time you spend in a morph the more that morphs mannerisms bleed into your own. Near the end Rachel starts lumbering like a bear, Marco beats his chest, Jake will pace like a caged tiger, and Cassie will occasionally whine like a wolf, when human Tobias will stare at you and preen his hair.

Ax will have a weird relationship with the previous point. He develops human mannerisms when an Andalite but shows Andalite mannerisms when he's human. He can never seem to get it quite right.

Human controllers smile just a little too much. They also sometimes get distracted by sensory things. They'll stare at the way light refracts off a window pane, or subconsciously rub their hand against an interesting texture. They play music a little too loud, and tend to drown their food in hot sauce.

Whenever we see the Chee without their holograms, we see markings and old stickers all over their bodies. Like a child drew all over them.

The Chee will always introduce you to whatever dog is near by but that gets weird because....

The Chee give their dogs the wildest names because they've been naming dogs for millennia and they're not going to reuse names so with a very serious face they'll introduce you to The Throgolizer, Space Cadet Cheeseburger, and the Right Goodly Lord Paphershinerpeppinpeppershireson.

The free Hork-Bajir get it in their heads that if they're on earth they need to adopt earth culture. First they start wearing clothes. They get a bunch of stuff from a thrift store dumpster but do not understand how clothes work. Like not at all. They wear pants as hats and like to put shoes on their blades. Toby is the only one who understands fashion. She's adopted a sort of hip-hop bad girl style that leaves Rachel conflicted.

Ax fixed up an old TV for the free Hork-Bajir and that's where they get most of their understanding of earth culture. Because of this a lot of them will misquote pop culture stuff and they have started screaming whenever someone enters a room (they're still working on understanding the subtle differences between screaming and applause). They're big fans of Seinfeld, even though they don't understand any of it.

Toby has been experimenting with breakdancing in her free time. Her handle is T-body and she keeps getting her blades stuck to the floor.

Time for the first backlog report of the new year! I didn’t actually finish as many games this month as I thought I would. I was intending to put Octopath Travler 1, The Lost Child, and Pokémon Black on this list, but such has eluded me.

Bravely Default II:

I gotta be honest. This game isn’t on here because I completed it. It’s on here because after several years of playing on and off, after having been stuck on optional bosses one too many times, after reviewing the fact that it is number five on my longest played Switch games (sandwiched between Dragon Quest XI and Trails of Cold Steel 3 if you’re curious), I still find myself not liking this game. I played for more than ninety hours, but only rarely in that time did it ever feel like I was having fun. I have many, many issues with this game, which probably deserves its own post.

What I’ve learned from this game is this. 1.) If you don’t like the demo of a game, don’t purchase the full game in the hopes that it will get good. It won’t. 2.) You can disagree with literally everyone else without being a contrarian if you have actual beef. 3.) Sunk cost fallacy is a bitch. If it sucks, hit da bricks!

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective:

Now for a game that is perfect in every way! :D

The music, the rube-Goldberg puzzles, the story, they’re all great! Every single character has unique motion to them, from Inspector Cabanella’s style to Bailey’s Panic Dance, to *Spoilers* unnerving self-manipulation. The amount of character packed into this game is untouchable. It stole my heart so completely that it’s become one of the few games I’ve ever 100%’ed.

Now go play it for yourself! It only took me like two or three days!

Shantae, Half-Genie Hero:

This game has been sitting in my Switch Library for quite a while. I’ve enjoyed the Shantae series since Risky’s Revenge, on the DSi.

Wayforward seems to have put significant effort into the presentation. The 3D modeled environments actually help the platforming in a way, making it easier to distinguish background from interactive elements. The music is nothing short of great.

I do find the plot to be a bit thin however. I hopping across levels to fulfill Mimic’s grocery list isn’t exactly high-stakes adventure. They try to tie this all up with a supposed threat to the realm of magic, but it only comes up at the beginning and end, making the individual ‘episodes’ feel disconnected. I also find it odd that they try to put in a ‘You can rely on your friends’ Aesop when in this game they debatably do the least, outside of Sky and Wrench being your taxi.

On that note the whole ‘Shantae is fired’ bit would have hd more weight to it if we visited more than one town.

Regardless, I do think it’s a fine game, and one worth the time spent on it.

As long as there’s music, she’ll keep on dancing! And there is music and dance aplenty in this game!

The combat is just as smooth, with the introduction of the Umbrian Climax only adding to the experience. The music and visuals are both crisp and clean, though I have to say that I prefer the first game’s soundtrack overall.

The plot is good, with plenty of twists, but I find that they should perhaps have split the ‘Jeanne must be rescued from hell’ and ‘amnesiac kid gets involved in supernatural family drama’ should have perhaps been saved for different games. I like Loki, (breakdancer who fights with a tarot deck is such a fun character idea)but we came for the girlfriends. I also wish they leaned in more with being able to fight demons. Having a separate enemy category for them is a nice step, but less so when there’s only like, ten or twelve of them.

Always tired because she stays up playing games and is on the grind 24/7

Is a streamer as well as takes classes at Hope's Peak (She does touch grass)

She loves rhythm games and dating sims, and her least favourite are fighting games and horror games (but she's still pretty good at them, although horror games scare her)

She doesn't like Just Dance. She's TERRIBLE at dancing, but she finds it a fun game regardless and enjoys it more seeing her friends being silly (Kokichi's gonna break his ankles and "Miu please don't break the controller") or the real dancing pros while playing (i.e. Maki and her ballet or Tenko with breakdancing)

Sometimes people will come up to her saying they recognize her because of her streams

She often deals with "why do you take games so seriously" and she's very passionate about games being about fun and enjoyment, but also knows how doing well on a leaderboard can be a part of that

She's 100% a perfectionist, she wants the S rankings and to top frag/be the winner and to unlock the best endings

She's also quite competitive but she's not the boastful type (unless she's playing against Kokichi whenever she can convince him to, because HE is the boastful type and she wouldn't miss an opportunity to put him in his place)

In the past she's been asked by other people to be the "carry" and at first it flattered her until it just became her doing all the work while they went AFK or gave her their phone/console, which was heavily isolating and upsetting for her

In that sense, she dislikes people who completely rely on her rather than just play the game, which is why she doesn't play multiplayer games as often unless she's off-stream and on an alt

Also she's been teased for liking games and called a "Game Freak" bc she enjoyed them but as she grew up games became more mainstream. She's still self-conscious about bringing up her passion though

She's super upbeat but will make references from time to time that some people may not catch about gaming

She also thinks in gaming references (i.e. Tsumugi's like an NPC) and not overly familiar with being social (she's a little awkward, just kind and used to having a persona that presents as social- courtesy of streaming)
