To add, I dealt with addiction and it took therapy to realize exactly what I was avoiding. Addictions happen because you’re avoiding feelings, be it crippling depression or anxiety or doomerism etc. it’s not easy to quit, but trying to find the real root of the problem is a good place to start, and then introduce things that are similar to your addiction without the harm, and keep going from there. Getting therapy helps. Getting proper meds to control mental illness helps. Life is hard but one day you’ll be 25 and realize that you don’t want to die anymore, which always sounds like a lie when you’re suicidal, but trust me. There will be a day where you realize you like the way the sun feels, or you have a plant/pet to take care of, or you decide to pick up a hobby you love. Don’t ruin your chances by starting a crippling addiction.

Self-care Cheat Sheet - a guide for people who can’t do exactly what they’re supposed to
Exercise:
If you can, go to the gym or go for a run or a bike ride. I know you don’t feel like it, but you’ll feel better afterwards both physically and mentally.
If you can’t go to the gym, exercise in your room. Maybe follow a simple Youtube video or do some exercises you know well with whatever tools you have - and if that’s all too hard, simply move a bit to some of your favorite songs for a while.
If you can’t go for a run, go for a walk. Take your headphones on and listen to music or a podcast while walking to make it less boring, or maybe bring one of your friends! It doesn’t have to be a long walk. Even if you’re only outside for 10 minutes the fresh air and movement will do you good and clear your mind.
If you can’t go for a walk or exercise otherwise, stand up and do some stretches and walk around your room for a little while. Your body will appreciate a break from sitting at your desk or lying in your bed even if it’s a short one.
If you can’t move that much, just open your window and enjoy some fresh air.
Personal hygiene:
If you can take a shower (even though it’s hard!), do it. You will feel so much better when your hair is not greasy and when you aren’t smelly and sweaty. If you can force the energy, it will be worth the effort.
If you can’t do a full shower routine, simply step into the shower and wash your crotch, ass and armpits. Forget about your hair and forget about shaving. Just quickly wash the most smelly parts. You’ll feel a lot better afterwards.
If you can’t take a shower, wipe your crotch, ass and armpits with wet wipes and then apply deodorant and dry shampoo. It’ll take the worst of the smell and will make you look and feel significantly cleaner.
If you can’t clean yourself at all, at least change out of your dirty clothes and put something comfortable and clean on. It’ll help you feel better.
Dental hygiene:
If you can, brush your teeth for 2 minutes twice a day. I know it’s hard to find the energy and the motivation, but you need to do everything in your power to take care of your teeth. They won’t care whether you have a good reason not to brush them and dental care is often expensive.
Doing it once a day is not a failure and is still a whole lot better than not brushing them! But if you struggle to brush as often as recommended, I recommend investing in an electric toothbrush to make each brushing more effective.
If you can’t brush your teeth for two minutes, brush them for 1 minute or 30 seconds. A short brushing is also still a lot better than nothing!
If you don’t like tooth paste, brushing your teeth without it is still better than not brushing them.
If you don’t like the texture of the tooth brush, look into tooth brushes for kids or surgical tooth brushes which are a lot softer.
If you can’t brush your teeth at all, use a wet wash cloth whenever you can to gently wipe the worst plague build up off your teeth.
If you can’t do that, invest in some mouth wash and gurgle it once a day or buy some of the gum which helps cleaning your teeth and keeping your breath fresh.
If you currently don’t have the energy to do anything for your teeth, at least try to limit your soda and sugar intake so that your lack of brushing won’t be too dangerous.
Eating:
If you can, cook a proper meal. Your body will appreciate you for providing it with the energy it needs to function optimally. If cooking is boring, put on a podcast, a show or some music - or maybe call or invite a friend.
If you can’t cook and you can afford it, order some takeaway. It may feel like a waste of money, but feeding yourself is never a waste and you will feel better once your body gets some nutrients. It doesn’t even have to be the healthiest option. Any food is better than no food.
If you can’t cook or order takeaway, make something very simple. A boring sandwich or instant noodles or a toast will provide you with some energy even if it isn’t that fun or enjoyable to eat.
If you can’t make a sandwich, just eat some bread or some deli meats or maybe some fruit or vegetables separately. You don’t have to actually make the sandwich in order for the meal to count.
If you can’t make a sandwich, eat whatever you have. An apple is better than nothing. A couple slices of cheese are better than nothing. An old chocolate bar is still a lot better than nothing. A dry slice of bread isn’t fun to eat but it is STILL better than nothing. So is a bag of chips.
If you can’t make yourself eat just anything, eat whatever you have (or are able of acquiring and capable of eating). Yes, even if it’s chocolate or ice cream or chips. It’s good to eat healthy when you can, but when it’s a question between not eating at all or eating something unhealthy, unhealthy food always beats an empty stomach. Yes, even if it’s the same things you ate yesterday and the day before.
If you consistently struggle to get enough food down, look into meal replacement shakes/bars and dietary supplements of various kinds. Maybe get some blood work done by your doctor to see what vitamins your diet might be lacking.
(If you have a friend, a partner or a family member who you know likes cooking or who you know has a lot of money don’t be afraid to ask them for help. I’m sure they wouldn’t mind bringing you some leftovers, cooking for you or borrowing you some money for something you’d actually be able to eat if you’re out of other options.)
Sleeping:
If you’re tired and you can, go to bed. Especially if it’s late. Especially if you’re feeling particularly unwell. You cannot function optimally if you do not get a decent amount of sleep, so instead of staying up all night feeling shitty about yourself, put your phone down and get some rest.
If you can’t go to bed, have a nap. Set a timer for when you need to get back on track and allow yourself some rest. You do not have to power through the whole day just because you technically could. It’s okay to take 20 minutes or two hours to catch up on sleep if you’re feeling exhausted, especially if you didn’t get enough sleep last night.
If you can’t sleep at all, just lie down and close your eyes and rest for as long as you can. Studies have shown that even if you don’t sleep, lying down and letting your body and brain rest for a while helps you a lot. If it’s too boring, put on a podcast or music or something. But lie down. Close your eyes. Allow yourself to do nothing.
If you can’t sleep at all for several days, see a doctor and look into options for medical treatment. Sleep is important and if you consistently can’t get any, you need to act on it and try out various treatment options.
Socializing and connecting:
If you can, invite a friend, a partner, a family member, an acquaintance or anyone you like over. Have a nice talk with them or simply do something together. You may feel like isolating yourself is easier, but us humans are social beings and most of us need regular social interaction to thrive. (Maybe ask for a hug if you want one, physical contact can help a lot on your mood!)
If you live with someone, spend some time with them. Even if they’re not your favorite person and you’re not that close, having a conversation about something superficial is still a lot better than having no conversations. Who knows - maybe they can actually be pretty good company if you take the time to talk to them for more than two minutes! If talking is too hard, maybe ask them to play a game or watch a movie with you - or simply spend some time in the same room as them while doing your separate things. (Obviously you can disregard this tip if you live with toxic or abusive people!)
If you live alone and can’t get anyone to come over right now, give someone a call. Video chat if phone calls make you too anxious.
If that is too much, send someone you care about a text/message. Ask them what they’re doing. Tell them that you miss them. While talking to someone online or through texts isn’t exactly the same as actually talking to them, it will still help remind you that you aren’t alone and that there’s people who care about you.
If you don’t know who to text and don’t have a lot of friends, look into what opportunities you have for meeting new people. Maybe there’s a discord server for people who you have something important in common with. Maybe there’s a support group for people with the same mental or physical health issues as you nearby. Maybe you can find some lessons or meet ups for people who share your interests. Look into it.
If you need to talk to someone, anyone, don’t be afraid to reach out. Call that help line. Text that person you miss. Send an ask or a DM to that tumblr blogger you like. I promise you that even if you aren’t close to a lot of people right now, someone will be willing to listen and care. You just have to reach out.
(If you have a pet, cuddle it and play with it! Physical affection is physical affection regardless of whether it’s coming from a human or a dog. Friendship is still friendship if the two beings sharing it aren’t from the same species!)

Keeping things clean
Hygiene is a difficult topic for most people with a mental illness, for example depression, anxiety or PTSD, although I will be focussing on people with schizophrenia. Decline in hygiene also happens to be one of the signs that you may have this disorder. You may find yourself not showering, brushing your teeth, using deodorant or the likes, and you may not care either. While you can live without taking a shower or using deodorant you really need to take care of your teeth. Dental procedures are incredibly expensive and dental issues can be extremely painful. I will cover different ways to get the motivation the brush your teeth regularly. But more on that later.
Lack of good hygiene is heavily stigmatized by society, which means there are often feelings of guilt or disgust when we lose that standard of living. Despite that fact we may not feel motivated to clean our homes and our bodies and obviously this can be very distressing. I always say a messy home is a messy mind, in fact it might bring up your anxiety or push you farther into a depressive state, living in a bad environment can do a number on you psychologically. According to WebMD, clutter can lead to higher cortisol levels and causes embarrassment over living in a messy environment which can then lead to self isolation.
Disorganized behaviour may be another reason a person can’t keep themselves and their surroundings clean. Disorganized behaviour (and speech but that’s not relevant here) is a huge red flag for schizophrenia, but it can be overcome with some therapy and medication. You will always hear me advocate for medication and therapy, partly because that’s what I learned in psychology and also because it’s worked wonders for me. In particular, cognitive behavioural therapy, or CBT, is shown to produce good results in changing behaviour. Therefore it can aid one to change the behaviour of poor hygiene into one of good hygiene.
Some other ways you can change your behaviour is through operant conditioning, or using rewards to change your behaviour. One example that I do is I write a few things on a whiteboard, such as brushing my teeth, cleaning for half an hour, taking my morning meds, exercising, and I tick one off after I finish that task and once I complete all of them I can drink all the iced coffee I want (hot coffee in the winter). If you feel as though you can’t follow your guidelines ask someone else to uphold them for you. So if you can only play your switch after you brush your teeth ask someone to stop you from playing it until after you’ve done it. And you don’t have to start off with a long list, it really could be as short as brushing your teeth. You can build on it after you set up that particular habit. I use brushing your teeth as the primary example because its the most important habit to build, brushing (and flossing, don’t forget to floss) twice a day is the key to healthy teeth, I also like to use non-alcoholic mouth wash twice a day just for added protection. If you seriously don’t have the energy to brush at least use mouthwash and floss, there are even these plastic flossing tools to make it easier.
The second but not less important thing to remember is to attend to your pets needs. This means feeding and watering them first and taking them for walks or cleaning litter boxes or just general pet cleanliness. Make sure to reward yourself with something after you do so you can build up those habits. If you find you can’t take care of your pets consider finding them a new and loving home.
Now, showering can be tedious if you’re suffering from a mental illness, you have to undress, and then get in the shower which can take a lot of energy, then once you get in you don’t want to leave, and then you have to get dressed which costs even more energy, I’ve been there. But smelling funky can be a serious blow to your self esteem. And if you don’t care, well I’m not sure why you’re reading this. Anyway, if you’re feeling self conscious use that feeling to find the energy to get into that shower or bath. I like to put on my favourite perfume after a shower, it makes me smell even nicer and it’s a little reward so doing it. And again, using rewards is a great way to stay motivated. I will however say that using positive punishment (I’ll list a reference about the types of punishment in the reference page) is actually the worst thing you can do to successfully change behaviour, I mean if you try it and it works for you more power to you. But make sure you don’t harm yourself in any way, that’s not the point of punishment in operant conditioning.
As for keeping your space clean, it’s really really hard to keep a house or even room clean when you have a mental illness like schizophrenia. One trick that I have found is to not wait until you have a sudden burst of energy and try to do it all in one night. Set aside 5, 15 or even 30 minutes per day, and dedicate that time to cleaning. Listen to upbeat music while you do, sing along. And just do that every day and eventually you’ll have a place that doesn’t make you depressed or anxious, which is ideal and what we all really want.

Meaning… When we move to a new area or maybe our long-term dentist chooses to move; we now must search out a new dental office that will make us feel at the very least as comfortable and cared for as our previous dental office did. And as many of us know, this search can be a literal tooth-pulling process. Thankfully, we’ve got you covered here with a few great tips that can help narrow down the options and reveal the best dental office for you and your family.
1.   Check the Insurance
Comfortability is of course one of the most important factors in choosing a dental office. We believe this should also include financial comfortability and giving patients options to enable them to afford their dental care. Dental procedures like fillings or root canals can be expensive, leading to financial hardships for many families. Most quality dental offices welcome the ability to discuss their insurance coverage which gives that patient the knowledge and security to make the best decision for them whether they have insurance or not. If you do have insurance coverage, they can be a very good resource to inform you of the dental offices in your area that will cover your care. For the most part, we all want the best possible for ourselves as well as for the members of our families. And when it comes to trusting someone to work on something as delicate as your mouth and teeth, finding the right dental office with very well-qualified dentists is crucial! I know what you are thinking…
“How am I supposed to research all the qualifications of each dentist in my area?!”
Thankfully, being in the internet age, any credible and highly qualified dental office will have their own website that you can go to and not only read about the dental office and read about their values but also find information about each of the doctors in their practice and what the doctors’ qualifications are. Don’t just stop there however, it’s important to know they are continuing to improve their medical education and knowledge as the dental industry constantly evolves and improves.
4.   Check the Reviews
Don’t judge a book by its cover. This age-old saying not only applies to dental offices that may appear to be advanced and new but also offices that may look old and unkempt. Getting to know untold information and experiences comes from the reviews from current and past patients. One important tip is to look for recurring themes in the reviews you read. Let’s also not forget to also get both sides of the review board story; the good and the bad. As some of us more experienced visitors know, dental offices have very similar floorplans, equipment, and services as one another. That being said, in the last two decades or so dental offices, their equipment, and the amenities they can provide us patients has improved immensely. Depending on the oral needs of us or our family members, specific services and procedures may be needed in our dental office. The last thing any of us want to do is juggle several different dentists, locations, and bills! This is why doing the due diligence and getting a variety of services from our dental office is imperative. Dentists often offer family plans, emergency dental care, cosmetic services, restorative services. If you find a dentist’s office that offers all of these options, they’re a great choice for you and your family.
6.   The Waiting Room
Ahhh the dreaded waiting room… The way we think of a waiting room or as I like to think of it, the transition area, needs to evolve and become more realistic. Before we get into the actual waiting part of the transition area, one way or another we will be spending some time filling out paperwork or simply seated before we’re seen by our dentist. Therefore, it’s important we feel comfortable with the entire setting from the furniture to the paint and artwork on the walls. Settling any anxiousness you may have or simply enjoying yourself while you prepare for a little self-care should be an important factor in the dental office experience.
