"You grew up like this?" for Clint. he has the Vibes of a ChildhoodTM but i actually have no idea. here's tk though

“Yeah, sort of.” A shrug, hands tucked into his pockets, as he wandered around the carnival with TK. Clint wasn’t having the greatest of days—there was noise coming from every direction, all at once, and that tended to be A Lot. It was all sort of blurring together and he had a hard time picking out individual sounds. TK’s voice was doing it’s best to blend in with the rest of it; it took all of Clint’s concentration to focus on it.

This was nice though, he thought, talking about a time in his life that he actually looked back on fondly.

“When I was a kid, me and my brother ran away from one of our foster homes. Joined a travelling circus.” A small smile played at his lips. “There’s no freeloading with carnies, though—you gotta earn your keep. So, we worked as roustabouts, doing stuff like putting up and tearing down tents, taking care of the grounds, working with the animals…all sorts of odd jobs, too. Any kind of grunt work, that’s what me and Barney did.”

Glancing off to his left, he watched as a kid tried to win one of the rigged games. Clint knew this one, knew how to win it, how to actually get the balloons to pop. Without really meaning to, he found himself wandering closer, still talking to TK as he did. “That all sort of stopped for me once the Swordsman and Trick Shot started training me, though. Spent most of my time practicing, then.”

I need Clint Barton to meet Dick Grayson.

I need Clint to roll into a SHIELD ops assignment meeting having absolutely not read the briefing materials before the meeting. I need Phil Coulson to explain that there has been a serious threat against the life of Dick Grayson. Wayne Corp is about to announce some new initiatives. Intelligence confirms a criminal syndicate plans to kidnap Dick Grayson to force Bruce Wayne to call off the plans. SHIELD needs Wayne Corp to go through with it (and kidnapped sons of billionaires are always a headache) so Clint, we've created an identity for you as a Wayne Corp employee to keep an on things.

And Clint has to be like, "Yeah that won't work."

The analysts immediately take offense. "It's an airtight identity, you've done worse undercover work than babysitting a billionaire's kid."

Clint interrupts. "I can't pretend to be someone else around Dick Grayson. I know him. Me. Clint Barton. We were friends when we were kids."

Everyone at the meeting is losing it and Clint stares at them all. "How many circus kids do you think there are? Haley's and Carson's didn't tour together but our paths crossed in the offseason."

That explains why during his afternoon walk home, Dick Grayson comes across his childhood friend, Clint Barton, wearing jeans and a purple tank top, juggling and doing tricks for cash on the street. SHIELD has adjusted Clint Barton's identity so he's down on his luck, busking for spare change because it's hard to get a job when you're a deaf former circus performer with barely a GED.

Of course Dick wants to help and they reconnect. Dick asks Clint to perform at a Wayne gala. The same gala where the goons attempt to grab Dick Grayson. Dick keeps trying to slip out and change into Nightwing but? Somehow? Clint is always behind him? They're both trying to fight off the goons, still in their civvies, each trying to rescue each other while also not giving away their secret idecities,

"Where did you learn to fight like that?"

"I used to be a cop. Where did you learn to fight like that?"

"Would you believe me if I said bar fights?"

When it's all over, there's some disagreement about who is walking who home but Clint insists since Dick was almost kidnapped. Clint gets into his Hawkeye gear and plans to spend the night watching Dick's building for trouble when he sees Nightwing go swinging away from it.

Naturally he follows. Nightwing is meeting with the bats to report on the kidnapping attempt when there's a wild bit of confusion and mistaken identity as one of the bats slams Hawkeye to the ground and demands to know why he's following Nightwing.

Clint's lying there partially stunned at being nearly splattered by one of the robins or something when Nightwing leans over him.

"Clint?"

"Hey, Dick."

Clint and Dick were already friends but that's the story of how Hawkeye meets Nightwing.

(In the sequel, Clint turns up outside Dick's apartment months later. He's wearing multiple bandages, drinking a coffee with the name on the cup horribly misspelled with a K and holding Lucky's leash. He looks at Dick and says, "The Tracksuit Mafia has moved to Bludhaven, you got any plans tonight?")

He didn't expect anything from anyone, but if Tony seemed insistent on finger spellings than he'd at least show him something. Clint shrugs, waving his hand in a dismissive manner as Tony says that he'll learn some more for next time. ❝ It's no bother, now you know something. ❞

We see each other. Oh, was he not going to let it be however many months it was since they had seen each other before this?

And he course corrected again, could be handy in the field. ❝ Sure, it could be or at parties. ❞ Not that he can remember the last time there's been a big superhero gathering, social party, nor can he recall last time he's attended them. He knows the X-man had that one thing, but the point stands. Clint hasn't gone, and he can't recall the late Avengers celebratory gathering.

And then just sitting in here alone?

Clint's not going to answer that part. They needed to go back to normal, and normal was what they had been doing before last night. ❝ I'll work out, push my limit, than see where the rest of the day carries me. Walk Lucky too. ❞ Do stuff. Find something to do. Sit in here alone.

The harder question to answer was the one that broached the topic about the Avengers. ❝ I did my time with the new West Coasters. ❞ Until he wasn't part of them anymore either, until that was finished. At least for him. He felt like the odd one out, the butt of the joke. Why he'd think avenging around with the next generation was a smart idea? Oh, Kate, that's right.

It's not entirely an answer. He doesn't know and he really doesn't want to get into it. ❝ I'll be back when I'm back. ❞ He will be back, but he wasn't sure himself.

Tony watches closely taking in the words and following along. It wasn't much, but it was a start. He wondered if there were a lot of different grammar rules. That would the the harder part to learn.

"Shit, how did I not even notice you put them in," he said shaking his head. "Thanks for the lesson. I'll have to learn some more for next time." That didn't come out right. "We see each other." Nope. Try again. "Could be handy in the field." Nailed it.

He raised an eyebrow at Clint. "Working out all day long? Or are you going to be working out and then just sitting in here alone?" he said. "How long is this holiday for Clint? You know you could come back to the team if you wanted to."

As far as Tony was concerned it was always the more the merrier of the team. They always made this big deal who was officially on the docket but it wasn't like they would chase someone off if they came to help. And now he'd spent so much time here, he was a little worried about him. Or maybe he was just looking for an excuse to make sure they saw each other sooner rather than later.

My original plea for help was, for context on the type of recommendations you may find (though delightfully, there are others mixed in):

‘I'm looking for Winterhawk fic recommendations.

Ones where Clint finds/meets the WS (as either Hawkeye or an AU Clint, not picky)

Or ones where it is Winterhawk with a Hurt Bucky or Bucky in Distress kind of vibe.

AU or otherwise, even if it is a full on Clint/Bucky AU.’ I also had asked simply for favorite authors and favorite stories. The answers were plentiful and wide spreading, and I’m still making my through (I am a multishipper as long as one of ‘em is Bucky Barnes – welcome to my hyper fixation. So I jump around).

So, in thanks to so many who took time to dig for the recommendations, I wish to spread the love and make it easier to view what others took the time to dig up for me. It really did help. ❤️

He’s used to walking by the place, not visiting, but the next thing Bucky knows, he’s hanging signs and being used as a climbing tree for a bunch of freshly-acquired kittens. And he just...keeps going back. First for the kittens, then for the disaster shop owner who rescues actual kittens from actual trees and teaches archery as a side-gig, and eventually because he’s hopelessly in love.

Instead, the Winter Soldier held a fist out containing Clint’s hearing aids and then, once he’d tucked them in pretty much on autopilot, thrust a cat in Clint’s face and growled out, “Tell me about this kitten,” like he was demanding the passwords to a nuclear weapon.

Somehow Clint ends up co-owning a kitten with the Winter Soldier.

Let’s see, what else?” He squints down at the ground, rubbing the back of his neck. “Oh, yeah, I won the building in a poker game with the Russian mafia and every once in awhile they show up and try to take it back, but usually I handle it, no problem. Uh...”

Clint happens to looks up and Bucky’s eyes are wide, his mouth hanging open. Clint’s hand freezes where he’s rubbing the back of his neck, suddenly embarrassed. Yeah, when you put it all out there at once, it doesn’t sound so good.

There’s another explosion, closer this time and throwing more light. He turns his head sharply and sees Bucky Barnes hovering near the door, looking… off. Clint pushes Rogers and he finally stands up so Clint can scramble out of the bed and grab some clothes. He’s wearing only boxers because it’s fucking hot in Wakanda, and he catches Barnes’ eyes flicking across his body.

Clint long ago stopped being bothered by people’s reactions to the many scars on his body – not that that many people actually see them - but that doesn’t mean he appreciates when they stare. “Like what you see?” he asks with a hard edge as he pulls on his shirt. Barnes turns his head, at least having the decency to look embarrassed for being caught staring.

Rogers looks at them both impatiently and quickly switches gears. “Clint, I need you to take Bucky. Get him out of Wakanda and somewhere safe.”

OR Bucky and Clint fall into each other. Bad shit happens. Then it all works out in the end.

Ok hear me out!

I know Clint Barton (Hawkeye) gets a lot of shit especially for his Avengers movies adaptation, but I have always loved his character. Granted, I appreciate his comics depiction (and the TV show because it had a lot of comics stuff in it) the best, but I really like the character in general.

Not only is an awesome representation for deaf/ hoh folks (using !Accurate! ASL in comics and the TV show) but he is also an awesome example of someone who had a shitty childhood deciding to break the cycle. Granted, that is less of an under-represented character type, but it's still important.

The avengers movies did sort of give Clint a family out of nowhere (believe me I have my issues with it) but they never showed Clint doing anything but loving/ caring/ desperate to be around his kids. Do you know how rare it is to see a bad-ass male character who is overjoyed at the idea of spending time with his children doing nothing cool or interesting. I will bet good money that MCU Clint played princess dress up with his kids more than once.

I have the habit of ignoring MCU Clint in favor of his pathetic, constantly tired/ injured, painfully normal, amazing comic counterpart, but I was reminded recently just how awesome MCU Clint is.

I found a fanfiction that was a post-Avengers AU. Now, I'm not generally a connoisseur of that genre, but I gave it a shot, and damn. Not only did the author do an amazing job setting up the timeline and seamlessly creating the AU, but they showed just how much of a dad Clint is.

Clint Barton is a man who never had a good dad growing up. Zero positive parental role models. And yet, even after a life of assassin work and lies and stealing, he became something better than his past. Childish and constantly-in-the-vents Clint is entertaining and has its place, but the truest form of the character to me is when he looks at his teammates, at the younger heroes he helps mentor, or even at an enemy, and decides that he will take care of them like he was never taken care of as a kid.

Clint is amazing not only because he's the epitome of an average guy deciding to stand up to the bigger enemy, but because he cares so much.

Communication when their comms are down - great plan! And including the local vigilante, who's been working closely with them on this, is a real no-brainer.

Until it turns out said vigilante is an asshole that thinks sign language is beneath him, judging by the way he's stubbornly refusing to learn it.

Aww Katya! I love her so much so thank you for asking and getting my brain juices flowing! Hehe

Katya is as smart-assed as her father when she’s comfortable around you. As soon as she feels like she can let her guard down around you she quickly becomes the most sarcastic one out of the bunch! She’s also very opinionated like her mother, you will know if she doesn’t like you. (Although that’s rare, because she’s genuinely a pretty laid back person.)

She gave a kid a black eye at the age of eight, which greatly alarmed Clint who was fully prepared to give her a stern talking to. His rehearsed I’m disappointed in you talk however flew right out the window upon the news that the kid with the black eye was also the ring leader of a group of bullies. A group of bullies that were harassing Katya’s new friend Daisy, a deaf child. Once the principal told him that, Clint shrugged his shoulders and told the principal, “Actually I think my daughter is the one who deserves the apology for having to do your job for you! And I deserve an apology for you wasting my gas, Principal Townsend!”

Katya later asked him, after a pit stop for some ice cream, why some kids were mean to those who couldn’t defend themselves.

“Sometimes it’s because at home they can’t defend themselves so they take it out on other people. They think it makes them feel better.”

“But that’s stupid, daddy.”

“Yeah, it is stupid ain’t it? If you promise not to tell mommy, do you wanna do something fun with daddy tonight?”

Later that night on a secret spy mission with daddy Katya learned that the bully, little Kevin Granger, couldn’t defend himself at home. She also believed that her daddy was a hero for real that night and that there were far scarier monsters than aliens in New York. Mommy was NOT happy with daddy when they got home.

Katya almost caused an international incident when she went on a ski trip to Finland. Having grown up around little influences of Russia via her mother’s heritage Katya was insanely curious about her maternal country. Natasha, however forbade her from ever visiting, and discouraged her at every turn to learn more out of fear that someone or perhaps the Russian state might kidnap her for testing or training. Katya was after all the daughter of a Widow. So, when Katya and her friends have some free time, Katya ever so carefully persuades her friends into a quick in and out trip next door. “Come on! They won’t even find out! I just want to see it! Please!!”

They make it in just fine and are visiting St, Petersburg Square when she gets the FaceTime call from her mother. It all goes to shit shortly after that. Katya tries to hide her surroundings with the help of all of her friends hoodies dumped over her head, but the call quality is shit and all Natasha sees is Katya’s slightly alarmed face with what looks like a black bag over her head. Then Natasha hears Russian voices in the background and the call cuts out. (Russian police had started to approach them to question what they are doing and spooked Katya. She jolts and her phone flies out of her hand and skids right into a rainwater drainage grate!!)

Tony stark nearly kicks off WW3 (Russia had restricted their air space, because of course they would!) Clint severely injuries eight police officers and one train conductor. And Nat, well…Nat slaps her daughter across the face for the first and only time in her life. It was intense and a very fraught time for the Barton-Romanoff family. It’s after this entire mortifying fiasco that Katya learns what exactly her fearless mother fears the most in the world. Ultimately it brings Katya closer to understanding her mother on a very deep level.

Katya didn’t start officially dating until her junior year of high school. Can you guess why? Starts with a C and ends with a T. She’s a daddy’s girl alright! She loves her father so so much. Not more than her mother or anything but she just understands Clint better. Clint is also a girls dad too, which such a combination does not for vivacious blossoming romance make! She tried of course, but after Clint met her date to the middle school dance by sharpening his knifes on the porch, Katya realized she had to play things a little differently than her peers. This of course doesn’t mean that she didn’t come home at three in the morning a little high or drunk with hickies on her neck once or twice. Her mom, of fucking course, was waiting for her on her bed.

“Sit, before you wake up your father. We need to talk.” “Are you going to tell dad?” “Only if you don’t tell me the truth, are you going to lie, Katya?”

She really hates it when her mom uses mind tricks on her, because damn it they work. After that Katya stops sneaking out. She brings her boyfriend over for breakfast two weeks later. Clint’s cordial on the surface, but obviously doesn’t really like him.

“He’s got a tongue ring Nat!? Do you know who has tongue rings these days! Bad boys! Boys who think no means yes and—“ “Do you trust our daughter, Clint?” “Of course I fucking trust her, it’s him I don’t trust! Look at him! He smells like weed!” “Trust her, Clint.” A sigh. “I just miss my little girl. When did she grow up so fast?” “All things grow old, honey, even you.” “Yeah?You still like this old man?” “Play nice tonight and I’ll prove it.”

Katya would later erase this conversation from her memory, and sleep with her headphones in. Eww. Parents. Are. So. Fricken. Gross.

Eventually, Katya and her high school boyfriend drift apart. She is now dating a young med student at Princeton. She’s planning on bringing him home in the fall.

What do you hope to see for Clint Barton in the year 2024

Ah I’d like to see the return of competent Clint. I think we’ve really lost sight of the fact that this is a human being with crazy skills that have kept him moving with people blessed with powers and so forth.

No, he isn’t just some dude down the block as fun as that trope is. He’s human, of course, but this man is like an Olympic level athlete who has spent his life honing incredibly impressive skills and idk if the comics involving him lately have reflected that.

We’ve had “down on his luck shit sucks” Clint for at least a decade now. He’s learned a lot of lessons over the last 10 years and I think we can handle him applying those lessons to his life to improve it ya know? It’s time for things to look up for him again and for people to remember he is fucking Hawkeye.

I’d also like his deafness be seen in his regular interactions, let it effect his storylines and show what it is to live with a hearing disability and not just added on in the end like “oh shit we forgot he’s deaf!! Quick add it in so we don’t get canceled.”

Endings - as stated, characterization, story flow, cadence, dialogue, smut scenes, minimalist world building but not a lack of - I get a lot of comments from people who also have aphantasia (we can't picture things in our heads) and I think it's because I don't describe every stupid ass tree (Tolkien, I'm talking to you)

Reasons why I love it: Honestly, when Clint flexes, I dare anyone to keep their concentration. Reasons why I love it: Clint falling head over heels for Bucky's murder strut, we love to see it. I can totally see Clint offering services like this, and I love that bit with Todd in the beginning there. This fic is super funny and sweet, so I hope you check it out for yourself!

Reasons why I love it: This one is just beautiful. Bucky slipping so effortlessly into his role as the one who takes care of Clint, giving him everything he needs – I could read that all day. The story beats that touch on their trauma are heart-breaking, but it just makes the fluff that follows all the sweeter. I love this fic, and I highly recommend that you check it out for yourself!
