I don’t usually do discourse on this blog but that last reblog hit the nail on the head. Reader interaction is at an all time low for fic authors and whilst I’m eternally grateful for any and all kudos and comments that I do receive, I feel as if in the past couple of years there’s been this weird migration of comments - they’ve left ao3 and they’re on tiktok instead. So, rather than people leaving comments on my fics, they leave their comments on the videos of people reccing my fics. I see tiktoks about my fics and they’ll have double, triple the number of comments that the fic itself has. It’s so lovely that people are talking about my writing, but it’s just a very strange phenomenon and a very odd feeling when you have a fic that you assume wasn’t overly well received because it has hardly any comments on ao3, but then you see a tiktok full of comments with people saying that it’s their favourite fic.

And I’m going to say something potentially controversial here but not ONCE have I seen a tiktok creator, whose content relies solely on other people’s fics, say anything along the lines of “leave the author a comment if you enjoy the rec.” Literally never ever seen this. And I think that’s a real shame.

Aang being a shitty dad is fine, but it's the way tlok makes Aang a shitty I have a problem with. You're telling me a guy who's entire culture was whipped out and whole family was massacred wasn't overjoyed at the possibility of sharing his culture with his entire family?

Would Aang have given more attention to Tenzin? Probably, them being the only airbenders would have almost certainly fostered a complex dynamic between the two— even to the extent that it would damage the father/son relationship. I think it's also worth pointing out that Aang was raised in a culture without the nuclear family dynamic we see him participarting in with Katara and their kids, and it's not out of the realm of possibility that Aang would fall short of the expectations and responibilities being a typical father figure brings especially when he himself never experienced that dynamic. Especially, especially compounded with the task of rebuilding a struggling world and maintaining peace.

However, do I think he would neglect to show his kids his culture? Their culture? No. Certainly not the extent he did, and especially not when we see how excited he is to share it with his friends in the show. Why wouldn't he be excited to share it with his kids? With all his kids? How the writers of The Legend of Korra make him a bad dad is a complex series of failures not the least of which stem from racism, the unwillingness to even attempt an understanding of multicultural families, TLOK originally being a 12 episode miniseries that then got greenlit for another season and was suddenly taxed with building upon a world that was never intended to exist beyond its original scope, and a fundamental misunderstanding of Aang as a character.

yeah ok so I caved. Lit up another bowl, opened a new folder on my Obsidian vault, and I'm gonna rewatch the minecraft diaries and I'm going to take detailed notes on everything plot related I can, separated episode by episode, make observations, and then create a little personal wikipedia of my interpretations of the characters as they appear on the show.

I just did episode one to do what is essentially a "am I capable of watching this" test (I feared since it was 2016 youtube that I was into in the year 2016, a historically terrible year for me, that I would have some HEAVILY BIASED ideas on the quality of this show, and that if I rewatched I would ruin it for myself) and I honestly didn't have too hard of a time with the youtube of it all. Cringe is and has been dead, and I'm looking at this like a fun little excercise in studying how this piece of media tells the story it tells.

Speaking of, I find it so interesting how the machinima of Zenix and Garroth kicks us off and we then have Aphmau speaking as like... a comentary youtuber. The machinima sets up a plot that isn't even hinted more at in the episode, too, but I can see the first 10 or whatever episodes having all been recorded in 1 batch all at once and then cut up. I don't recall how characterized Aphmau gets in this whole thing.

And also I find Aphmau doing the voices for Garroth and Zenix so unironically fun and endears me to the series. Idk why but it made me smile!

I'll probably liveblog more of this experience bc I'm incapable of keeping my mouth shut.

i've decided to post my a softer world x MASH edits to a sideblog. i may periodically rb them here too.

since my annoyance has only grown, I decided to crunch some numbers

out of 508 works in the ao3 archive for zombies-

my own word count for zombies alone is 246,043 from 14 works (this number is without the 64 fics from tumblr I have yet to transfer to ao3), @zombiedadjokes word count is 262,994 from 18 works, @kokinu09 word count is 429,102 from 22 works, while @sayorseee word count is 146,764 from 17 works, and @c-rose2081 word count is 51,220 from 4 works.

Going off these numbers alone, it's absolutely ridiculous to hear people say there's no content. There's no content when it comes to people nitpicking what or who they will or won't read, and I'm done pretending it isn't a thing that happens every single time. Going purely by this information, why are some of these creators treated like they don't create??? The ones complaining that there's no content will go and read all 51,220k from rose, and will literally beg for more from sayorsee constantly, acting like they're the only ones currently writing chaptered stories, but then won't go and read the combined 692,096 words from both zombiedadjokes and kokinu???

Imagine how much more content this fandom would have if people actually showed their support for anything other than the two authors they solely support? That For the First Time story you all love by sayorsee, everyone realizes that's just a mix of rose's Starchild and kokinu's Alien Armada stories, right? Granted, all stories are made of one another, that is what is so great about writing, but since when is this fandom so desperate that we're just losing any individuality and creativity? Like come on. This wouldn't even be a thing in the first place if there was enough support for literally anything that's different around here.

I support kokinu even if I don't read everything she writes due to personal preferences, and I support zombiedadjokes every time she posts something period because she gets zero recognization for anything she does in this fandom, or otherwise. You guys know that that chaptered story she's writing, the river near the valley, is a completely unique built from the ground up story that's at a casual 66,921k, right? That's still being updated? Within this dead fandom? You guys also know that kokinu has literally written every au you could possibly want from just two characters that she loves? That she is also still updating today, just because she loves these characters that much? Those that are saying there's no content, like, you know this, right? You know this before making annoying comments, right?

"there's no content" give me a break, you just want the same recycled content over and over again, and refuse to interact with anything that's not that. Interacting with content creators and just talking to them like normal human beings (aka when you leave comments on stories they write) goes a long way in keeping a community going, we're all aware of that right? It's also how you get things that aren't just the same thing over and over again. Ridiculous that I even have to say that.

Finally, I want to get one last thing clear. I'm not begging for views with this post, for myself or any of the people mentioned. I'm literally just saying something that apparently still isn't clear to this day, which is support the content in your fandom. If you truly want to keep something alive, support is all you need.

Send asks. Reblog. Interact.

okay after watching this in it's entirety; his intention for this video was...okay I guess but it's ultimately like kind of disjointed and all over the place. like in between the constant glazing of john waters, the thing he's ultimately criticizing is rainbow capitalism. like the main critique being how queer characters in mainstream media need to be more messy and toxic (he uses nimona and she ra as examples, dead ass) + critiques disney's handling of them with side characters or blink and you'll miss it footage of two same gender people kissing and holding hands. there is no 'good social media' in 2023 that will ever be equipped to solve this problem until the financial/cultural issue is addressed. decentralisation is your best bet. sorry.

Old Tumblr Dashboard (Userstyle)!!

I created a Userstyle for the Chrome/Firefox Stylus Extension that reverts the new dashboard to the old look!

You need to have Stylus installed. So if you don't have it:

Install the Stylus Firefox Addon or the Manifest V2 Chrome Extension (You can install Chrome Extensions on Edge as well)

Once it's installed into Firefox/Chrome/Edge you can proceed with adding this style or any other.

To add the style (Stylus), follow the instructions:

Click on "install".

Style will open a tag with it and in the left side you'll have a button that says "install style", click there. (Step-by-step copied from the lovely dorothyoz39 who wrote this in a reply!) For Manifest V3 only Chrome Or Stylus incompatible browsers:

For Chrome Manifest V3 install the Tampermonkey Extension

Only two columns in Masonry view. Semi-Unfixable, Tumblr creates columns based on monitor size, if I try adding another column (because it doesn't exist) it just perpetually loads on screen. Semi-fix: Zoom out in chrome/firefox and it adds more columns, you may need to change the font size of the page though

Search bar doesn't appear on some pages (like viewing a post), this is because Tumblr removed the search bar on those pages completely. Unfixable but not a big deal

Tumblr has ONCE AGAIN CHANGED THE ACCOUNTS MENU. The menus are now shorter and have less information on them. This is unfortunately permanent. I do not see any way to fix this. Unfixable.

If you want people's icons to stay fixed in place, instead of scrolling with the dashboard change this in Stylus;

Solved issues: (Update)

Menus need to be manually closed SOLVED! in V.4 and updated in V.5! The menu & icon WILL scroll with you if you have removed the sticky header CSS, however, clicking anywhere on screen will make the Menu disappear still.

Brought back SOME of the icons for Tumblrs latest update - Unfortunately, this does not bring back user icons for Reblogged posts! Make sure to yell at Tumblr for removing the icons as well as the horrible dashboard update here! v7.5 Fixed icons for all posts and put them back where they came from!

v6.9.6.9 (I promise this is the last funny number): Fuck Off Buggy The Clown Update + All languages support for the old header design!

v7.0: Fixed the search bar for tumblrs new collections feature, so it looks like the original search bar!

v8.0: Fixed masonry view icons, hidden the reblog icon on dashboard icons, fixed icons in blog viewport
