vaermina redesign attempt #1
eso's vaermina design is extremely lackluster but I like the abstract mask they gave her. I tried to incorporate aspects of her skyrim art (the dragon shoulders), since her oblivion and daggerfall designs are criminally plain.
I also wanted to incorporate more characteristics of her mind terror daedra (since their design and animations are fantastic), but I can't find references of their movements/attacks: they've got good horror going on and I want to work more of that into vaermina herself. but for now I've settled with just giving her a face simillar to her horn-less mind terror daedra.
(also gave her too many fingers here and there)

Ask time! What era/type of art would you say you draw the most inspiration from?
oh god this is really hard. Mostly because my inspirations are all over the place! One is 2010's webcomics! A very broad category, I know, but I was really into reading comics when I was in highschool, and a lot of amazing ones were coming out around that time. The Meek (Der-shing Helmer), HINABN (Tess Stone), Lackadaisy (Tracy Butler), and anything by Evan Dahm (the artist behind Riceboy/Vattu/etc). I somehow avoided Homestuck, but Prequel Adventure (Kazerad) rewired my little Oblivion-Obsessed brain.
Speaking of Oblivion - the concept art for all three mainline games in the Elder Scrolls series did SO much for my imagination. Adam Adamowicz is one of my all time favorite artists, and I think his work on Oblivion was overlooked because of his (also stellar) work in Skyrim. There's an entire flickr album of his concept art for TES IV, though, and I recommend it! What that man could do with art markers bewilders me even now. I think this might be the single most impactful art influence I have.
The close runner-up would be the aforementioned Evan Dahm's work. I think he's still, years later, criminally underrated in terms of public appreciation and discussion. For me, Rice Boy blew open so many doors regarding art style, presentation, and character design. Vattu then stunned with just how much of an epic it was and it's fantastic titular main character. Now 3rd Voice is perhaps his most technically beautiful comic yet, and seems to meld the weirdness of Rice Boy with Vattu's super gripping character arcs and worldbuilding.
The way his comics are paced (both in story and the literal pacing of how he organizes his panels/the art in them) is my favorite...ever. Even though they're simple, he just gets the framing down so perfectly it's crazy. The fact he can make such alien characters so human in how they act and how we view them astounds me. I really do - no hyperbole or empty flattery intended - think he's a modern day comics master and I need more people to discuss his body of work.
Also all of his comics are FREE to read on his website rice-boy[dot]com! They're also on webtoon if you're already dedicated to that platform, and the blog @riceboycomic was basically a republishing of Rice Boy with added artist commentary. If you're not ready to dive into the behemoth that is Vattu yet (its over 1000 pages, though it's so worth it), 3rd Voice is his newest work and you can catch up to the current page (288) within an hour. Rice Boy is also pretty short, under 500 pages. Please do yourself a favor and get lost in one of the quiet, uncanny, heartfelt worlds he's created (and then talk to me about it pleaaaseee).
#no art here#ask#webcomics#webtoon#i have print copies of rice boy AND all of vattu i'm a huge huge evan dahm fan

• I want to preface this by saying art and musical preferences are subjective. Everything below is just my personal opinion and preferences.
• I also don't want anyone to confuse criticism with hating. I like Inon Zur but I have some thoughts on his musical involvement in TES 6.
I *really* hope that they get someone besides Inon Zur to conduct the OST for TES VI.
The Music is perhaps my favorite part of TES. There's been many times when I'm totally burned out or bored with the games, but I never grow tired of the music. For example I have fallen asleep to the Oblivion OST more times than I can remember and the Morrowind theme is my favorite piece of video game music of all time. (Inon Zur's theme for Fallout New Vegas is my second favorite!!!)
Hearing the Arena and Daggerfall themes on an old burned CD were actually my first exposure to TES in any direct form and were the impetus to my later interest in the series. The music of TES matters so deeply to me. I never want to feel the urge to avoid or feel disappointed by any of it. It would bum me TF out if I was disappointed by the music of TES 6.
For Inon Zur, I LOVE his work on the Fallout soundtracks, but I just do not think his style works for TES.
I really don't like his music in the teaser they used for the now (old) trailer for TESVI. I also don't particularly like Zur's work on the blades OST either. To be clear, his TES music so far is *fine* but its not excellent like the OSTs for Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim were. His TES music is..just fine..
Honestly there are parts of the Blade soundtrack that sound like unused tracks from Fallout (eg. "A worthy foe") Zur loves him some horns, large brass instruments, and drums and while those instruments are fine, an overuse of them just doesn't't work in TES.
His typical style is just too brassy and "hard" for TES IMO. Even when he's trying to be soft with his music it just sounds off. Almost looming and rough. TES is fantasy, it needs flutes, soft vocal harmonies, and strings. Even the parts of ths Blades OST with strings and harmonies sound weirdly harsh and coarse for what they're trying to do. His music has a "dark" tone to me, like everything is tinged in a looming danger. IDK how to describe it. There are also moments in the Blades OST where it feels like he's trying to imitate Jeremy Soule's style and it just falls flat.
I dont believe Zur operates with the necessary softness, warmth, and pulse lowering harmony required for a good TES soundtrack. Yes there are dungeon and combat themes in all the games, but the most beloved TES music is the themes and ambient tracks. Inon Zur's Fallout work is incredible but his style naturally meshes really well with the Fallout games. Don't get me wrong, he's a fantastic artist, but his forays into TES music have been unsatisfying to me personally and doesn't mesh with the series.
I want to be as clear as I can because im not trying to bash him. *Inon Zur is a really good musician and conductor* I just don't think his style works for TES.
I love most or Zur's work, but I hope they get someone with more fitting musical style to make the OST for TES VI.

Game Reviews #1 - Morrowind
I have the theory that is is likely the best game Bethesda ever did and everything that came afterwards its just a repeat of what they achieved here. The side content ranges from fetch quests to some okay and interesting stuff, but what tops it all is the main quest, there is a sense of discovery not only exploring wise, but in a narrative sense as well.
The story is also tied to the sense of progression and leveling up, you start as a prisoner who is sent to work as a spy by the emperor, and there is a mystery you have to unveil, since you are a spy, you have to make a cover identity on your own, and the game tells you to do side content on your own and level up to get better at what you do, and better yet, it is all part of your mission, your cover identity, there is no weird sense of immersion breaking urgency like in Cyberpunk where you are dying and it just feels off when you want to explore, or like in Breath of the Wild where they say Ganon is about to break free and you are collecting dragonflies for a girl and her sister, Morrowind gives you the perfect mood to explore and do your own story and it only gives you the information you need at the final of the quest when things are about to go wild.
Morrowind also features a more natural and realistic depiction of the chosen one narrative, since this time you have to convince people and go through several tests instead of being told you are the one and being believed as such by others as a matter of fact, you have to win it, you have to convince them with actions, mere words don't do, people are very apathetic about the prophecy because naturally they don't believe it and just want to see results from you, people in Morrowind are all about to see to believe, and weirdly enough, even when it reduces the power fantasy factor, it makes the story feel a lot more real.
The lore is amazing and everything you hear about the Disappearance of the Dwarves is just neat, it is the kind of cryptic shit that scrambles my brain, the mystery about the real truth of the death of Nerevar, that weird wizard dude that clones his wives, the cult and the use of the Kagrenac tools by the tribunal and Dagoth Ur, it's just so good, it's all so good.
Also, no quest markers whatsoever. I first felt it was frustrating not knowing where to go, but Morrowind taught me about how rewarding the sense of exploration can be, and the sense of freedom that comes with it, no compass telling you where to go, its all about your own story, you get clues and get to discover things, beautiful things, scary things, unbelievable things.
The gameplay is fantastic too, there are just so many things you can use to achieve your goal, sure, the RNG combat is weird at first, the stamina use when walking is weird too, but the more you level up the more satisfying it becomes to hit more frequently, you can either specialize in long blades, or you can use stealth, the magic system is vast and full of possibilities. I was sad first when I used all my Icarian flight scrolls and I couldn't find any on the game, but then I learned you can do a spell to increase your jump and reduce your weight and boom, I was able to make a bootleg icarian flight spell myself, jumping from mountain to mountain. It is all about those little tricks and things you can do, the abilities, the possibilities that just add to the repeatability, the ability to levitate between cities, using the voice of the emperor to charm others, it is just all so good, so good.
Some of the lore was taken along with for the next games, but, I feel this is the only game for me worth exploring. I do like the nordic inspired landscapes, but I haven't felt the drive to explore them when its approach feels so soulless, and while Oblivion and Skyrim are the definition of what I would call generic fantasy, Morrowind's world is creepy and alien, it is scary and wonderful. The steampunk inspired Dwarf ruins, the construction in Sadrith Mora and the closer islands, the open maze that can be Vivec city, the houses made of stone and the manor district of Aldrun, the skeleton warrior filled castle of Firemoth, the altars in the Sixth House bases, the master index forts, that bonelord between the lava I found in a cave raiding one of my trials, it is all so good, so good!
While Daggerfall aimed at a sense of freedom and size with the procedurally generated world, Morrowind uses the manual approach and gives you locations that are all lovely handcrafted one by one without cramming up so many things in a small space, still giving you a big land to wander around and sight-see, Morrowind is the joy of being lost and discovering a place for the first time, to discover something beautiful or incredible after hours of walking, to find a lost fella and help them along the way for then discover the witch that cursed him was actually in the right, Morrowind is about dying, about fight your way in, Morrowind is about having an adventure, and it is one of my favorite games right now.
Plus Dagoth Ur is a pretty hot monster husbando. His aura is unmatchable.

Starfield & The Importance of Beginnings
SPOILER WARNING FOR STARFIELD!! DO NOT READ IF YOU DON'T WANT SPOILERS ON THE BEGINNING
-

Looks like we're good to go! Okay, so I've recently been dumping a steady amount of hours into Starfield. It's been fun, how they've evolved their character creation is fantastic, I've had a decent amount of positives. Throughout the six and a half hours I've played, there is only one thing that I have a problem with. That problem? The beginning of the game, particularly the first two hours. I understand that Bethesda games often have mediocre main storylines with characters that lack deep characterization. However, one thing about the main story that Bethesda writers usually do well is that beginning.
Skyrim is a notorious beginning. A decade after its release, the first two minutes of that game is still remembered. It is still celebrated through memes and video edits, references by other media. It does a lot of things right for an RPG! It provides just enough worldbuilding to give the actions of those surrounding you meaning, it gives you a purpose of being there without defining your backstory, and it provides an easy way to get the player from point A to point B without making the player feel dragged around. Oblivion works in a similar fashion. It doesn't work nearly as well as Skyrim's beginning, there is too much of it that relies on happenstance. However, it is still a rather solid beginning. Even Bethesda's Fallout games has some nice beginnings with Fallout 3. What matters the most with these beginnings and why they function is that, ultimately, the player feels like they're involved in what's happening. This is where I feel Starfield fails.
Starfield starts us off by putting us in the position of a miner riding an elevator down to the mines with a humorous veteran known as Heller and the stoic leader of the operation called Supervisor Lin. They seem to give you words of encouragement as you are carried down, dropping mentions of some of the more prominent factions of the Settled Systems along the way. For the next thirty minutes you're mostly following NPCs as they talk to you and order you to do tasks without much agency. This all goes until you touch the Artifact, an odd rock that is almost magical in nature. When you come into contact with it, you are almost blinded. Your vision is ejected from your body, flying through very matter itself until the whole universe is revealed to you. Then you are called back, told it was a hallucination, and provided the character customization menu through your employee file meant to remind you of who you are. After that you accompany the operations leader to hand the Artifact off to Barrett, a space explorer part of a legendary exploration group known as the Constellation. After the initial conversation and an unsuccessful raid from pirates, he invites you to join the Constellation on account of you "seeing what he's seen". He gives you his ship, his robot, and walks off.
After that, you run into some pirates, are lead to take down a pirate outpost, and the first quest ends there. That is considered your tutorial. There is a main story after that which can act as introductory quests, but the game lets you explore and accepts quests as you wish from this point. There are issues with this beginning, issues I have. First off, there's the more obvious problem of you not really being in control of what happens. There's no small choices you can make that give you that sense of agency. You are brought from story beat to story beat with no real care for investment. Even in terms of your "decision" to accept Barrett's invitation, there's no negotiation there. If you refuse, Supervisor Lin tells you that this is your purpose now and you should go along. There's not even really a way to ensure Barrett can get back home, you simply take his ship and fly off. That also runs into the issue of why Barrett would even lend you the ship.
He could fly you back and through him we could be provided important information on how the galaxy works. We could be informed what all these terms and factions being thrown at us during the tutorial and character customization even mean. What are these religions we can choose to align ourselves with? What are these places we can choose to hail from? What are the factions and how do they defer? We could've been told all this through Barrett and even have someone that could vouch for us to the Constellation. As the game is now, the Constellation accepts you immediately with no real resistance. If Barrett were to come along with us, it could provide an interesting dynamic where the Constellation is initially unsure of if you should be welcomed into their ranks. You along with the praise from Barrett could convince them to let you join, allowing the beginning to break from the "Chosen One" narrative it falls into far too readily.
I could go on about what Starfield could've done, like how being one of the Crimson Fleet Pirates taking Barrett's ship the "Frontier" would've provided an interesting hook and give you a more realistic route to get the ship and run off with it. Simply being there when Barrett was killed and escaping the planet as the mine is overrun with pirates would work much the same way and even provides minimal changes to how the story plays out in the next few hours. However that's not the point of this little rant here. The point is to showcase the flaws of the game's beginning. The game's story shows a nice amount of promise so far, being opted as an explorer gives you sufficient reason to run off and interact with the side content that often defines these Bethesda Game Studios games. However for any work the beginning is the most important. It is the first impression of your game. If that first impression is lacking in any way, the player could be made to feel like the rest of the game will follow its example. The beginning is the easiest time to lose your player and it deserves care. Starfield's beginning lacks care. It feels like it's almost treated as a second thought, which is such a travesty in a big budget game.

Top 5 video game trailers?
Oooo good question. Narrowing down this list was tough, not gonna lie.
5. Skyrim's Official Trailer - from the before times before Skyrim became a total meme - still goes absolutely hard. The slow ramping up of the chanting in the music, the narrator's words alongside the dragon, the panoramics of this beautiful world that was miles ahead of Morrowind and Oblivion, the promise of this open world to explore full of history battling these dragons and gaining the power they hold? Absolutely fantastic. Plus it has the *greatest* parody trailer
4. Total War: 3 Kingdoms' Mandate of Heaven DLC I think is pretty magnificent. It does a *phenomenal* job of illustrating the situation that led to the Yellow Turban Rebellion that the DLC centers around, and the imagery of Zhang Jue reaching for the sun trying to grasp it as he would try to wrench the Mandate of Heaven away from Liu Zhi and the Han Dynasty as they see the new day dawning knowing what's coming, the brilliant music, Dong Zhou is there, and the fact that it uses in engine assets delights me to no end.
3. Destiny's Become Legend Trailer If there was ever a trailer that captures how Destiny *actually* plays, it's this. While the game touts this sort of Space Opera Sci Fi Epic with Serious Stakes, the players are often *exactly* like this. The clans I've been a part of love doing stupid stuff and cracking one liners, and it showcases the fun that can be had. Also, live action trailers are an absolute delight.
2. The Halo Reach 2009 E3 Announcement Trailer. I cannot stress how when I saw this back in high school it got me on the edge of my seat and left me with shivers from it. I spent so much time in high school playing Halo with my friends, that this sits in my mind as the peak of all that. Halo Reach is still my favorite of the series to this day. It's simple, but it's *so effective* to immediately grasp you and fill you with the same feeling you get before you drop into the rollercoaster that is that game. 1. Mass Effect 2's Launch Trailer - from the epic music from Two Steps From Hell, to the way it uses basically 100% in game assets and scenes to showcase itself, it's a masterclass in making a trailer that hooks in and gives you a taste of what to expect from what has been one of Bioware's greatest games. THIS is how you do a trailer - you showcase just enough to get the player excited to see who these new characters are, what this new threat is, and how the stakes have been risen, narrated by an in universe character to draw the player in and immerse them immediately.

huh, i'm not totally sure what part of my thoughts on starfield are particularly sought after, but i guess i'll give a shot, because god knows i've spent a stupid amount of time ranting to my friends about this game in vc.
tl;dr: do i like it? yes and no. it is a bethesda game, for all the good and bad that entails
as an avid enjoyer of the elder scrolls and fallout, and in all of my familiarity that includes for bethesda games as a whole (granted, skyrim and fallout 4 and now fallout 76 in particular feel like they symbolize a very specific era in bethesda-isms), starfield just is a bethesda game. i know a lot of people said that it was similar to no man's sky, but the only similarity i can really feel between the two is just the UI and the ability to scan flora/fauna/minerals, which is kind of a negligible part of the gameplay. it feels a lot more like fallout 4, although they did make the right choice in not voicing the protagonist. (phew…)
it's a lot easier to convey this in voice because all the words spill out of my brain, but i will do my best in text: i think that a lot of bethesda games have a particular strength and weakness that have everything to do with each other, which is to say, "fantastic sidequests and faction quests, extremely weak main plots". i know that this is extremely subjective, and i am certainly not trying to speak for anybody but myself and my own experiences and preferences in roleplaying games, but it is what it is. i find myself far more invested in side quests than i do in main quest, and i especially feel this in skyrim, fallout 4, and starfield.
to preface what i want to say about starfield, i should first set up a reference level, or at least some framework of comparison: i said skyrim/fallout 4/starfield are kind of a group of specific bethesda-isms, and i guess the most gratuitous example of the similarity is in a weak main plot that revolves solely around the player character in a way that feels weird and immersion-breaking.
i will try not to take too much time in talking about bethesda games that aren't starfield, but that means i'm going to be really condensing this preface in reductionist ways. i am sorry! nonetheless, it boils down to autonomy in roleplaying games:
in skyrim's main plot, you are the dragonborn, the prophesied chosen one, and you don't really have to fight hard to prove the fact. skyrim's saving grace is in that you can also be whatever you want. all the guilds, faction quests, side quests, give you a lot of roleplaying wiggle room. yes, you may save the world from alduin, but you can also be as much of a saint or an evil little bastard, and that's why i've put so much time into it. compare this main plot aspect to morrowind's main plot, in which you have to fight tooth and nail to prove that you're the chosen one, that the prophecy refers to you, and you learn of the many before you that have died trying to prove themselves. it's far more engaging to participate in a roleplaying game that pushes you to prove yourself, rather than handing it to you on a silver platter. that feels good when it's done right. likewise, in oblivion, from how i see it: you are not the main character. your friend, the heir to the septim throne, is the main character. how interesting it is, to have a game say that you are not the chosen one, this friend of yours is! you are plenty special on your own (see the sidequests and dlcs), but the spotlight is not on you alone. and so, you get freedom to cause trouble or solve problems with less scrutiny.
in fallout 4's main plot, your protagonist has a preset career (that is gender-locked), a spouse and a child, and the main plot railroads you into following this thread. already you've set up a pre-requisite roleplaying method, so to speak: your character, while having autonomy within the bounds of the plot (of choosing to be a soldier/lawyer, of choosing to have a spouse and a child), removes a lot of agency from the player. from how i see it, it becomes very difficult to justify some forms of playthrough or immersion, when so much of your character's characterization is there from before you take control. compare it to fallout 3, which has you as the 19 year old kid of a doctor who causes serious faction conflict due to his objectives. you do not choose who you are born to, or what your parent does, which leaves a lot of free space to roleplay who or what you want to become. likewise, compare this to fallout new vegas, which adds very little context to your character: you're a courier who was shot in the head but you're alive. little else is added, which adds spectacular amounts of wiggle-room to do whatever you want out in the mojave. being able to mold your protagonist with what the world around you presents helps to bond with your character, and likewise your character's ability to bond with npcs and the setting as a whole.
ultimately, when it comes to goals of the protagonist specifically with regards to fallout series, fallout 3's main plot feels the easiest to follow, in my opinion: if i don't care about fallout 4's mandatory spouse-and-child situation, i'm not going to care about pursuing the plotline that revolves around them. if, in side quests and other overworld stuff, these aspects are near-constantly referenced, it sours the mood, it breaks immersion. the urgency of a parent looking for their missing child is serious and it's understandable that it's repeatedly brought up within the bounds of the story, but i'm personally not given enough time to put myself in the shoes of the protagonist i've made, and atop that i don't feel like i've made the protagonist at all. i've given them a face and a name, certainly, but the character has already been built for me. on the other hand, for the case of fallout 3, a child not only looking for their only living family member, but also unveiling the various aspects of their father's projects and the allies and enemies he's made along the way? now that's interesting, because it's a mystery i can pursue with my own level of urgency and my own agency.
in no man's sky main plot, and i'm sorry to be mentioning this when it's not a bethesda game nor does it have any similarity between starfield anyway (again: only the UI and scanning!), i still find it worth mentioning that the lore around the player character is so roundabout and so simultaneously "you are the protagonist" and also "you are but one speck in an incomprehensibly large universe" that it feels staggering in the best way possible. i've logged over 700 hours in NMS and i do lots of lore-hunting and i will say, that of all the space roleplaying games i've ever played, i like NMS's execution of space roleplay more than any others. this includes other space RPGS like the outer worlds, mass effect, starbound, what have you. i could talk forever about this but this is not about starfield, so i will stop here. haha
that said, let me actually get into starfield here:
roleplaying/sidequests:
i've enjoyed the time i put into starfield, but i dont particularly foresee myself playing much more of it. the most engaging parts of the game were, to me, the side quests that you can find in established cities or outposts, which really give you a feel for the cultural and societal expectations of each setting. that's one of the main things i really look for in a roleplaying game: things that make the world feel populated, that make it feel like i'm really within a community, whether i be an outsider or not, the interactions that i can have with the world around me is what gives immersion and allows the "roleplaying" aspect of a roleplaying game to truly shine.
as i do in a lot of roleplaying games i play, i went with a high-charisma character - a diplomat in this game, passing speech checks with ease and buttering up npcs to get them to join me in whatever cause i'm trying to advocate for. the atmospheres of the areas that are densely populated - the stark differences between akila, or neon, or even the mining outpost on mars - really adds a lot of personality to this game, which is something i really enjoy. in side quests, the stakes are significantly less high than in the main plot, and that just organically creates openings to go with your own approach, or to take your own path of roleplaying. that freedom of choice feels immersive. things like diplomacy vs. guns-blazing approaches to conflict, or choosing theft over sweet-talking to acquire assets, or to make complicated choices in the face of an engaging ultimatum: that's the essence of roleplaying, and it's unlike the main plot, which often seems to railroad you into one singular direction. if i create a character that i want to characterize using the interactions around me, having the ability to engage with my surroundings via the personality and the mannerisms of my character is a must.
THAT SAID, i have so much praise for the mileage i got out of speechcraft and diplomacy. i put the main plot on the backburner for a stupid amount of time because i had so much fun with passing speech checks with flying colors in side quests and faction quests. something about speechcrafting my way through the world gives me a dopamine hit like no other. it's satisfying to talk your way through a scenario that would otherwise require gratuitous violence. i guess ultimately it kinda leans into my goal of roleplaying in this game, which is to say, to really lean into my character's role as a diplomat, and as a sweet-talker and an incredibly charismatic orator. fantastic stuff.
anyway, i know at this point i'm saying this lightheartedly here, but the addition of they/them pronouns is great. i have my fair share of bethesda game OCs whom i use they/them pronouns for but the game doesnt acknowledge them as such, so it's a nice change of pace. as someone who exclusively uses they/them pronouns, although i dont project myself onto my player characters, it's still got a level of relatability, i suppose.
characters/worldbuilding:
the NPCs are fun enough, the banter between the constellation crew is endearing and the conversations you can have are nice - as is standard bethesda, the romance routes aren't as in-depth as some other games can be, which is not a complaint as much as it is just an observation. i romanced andreja, and her route is sweet, especially considering her backstory and her personality. unfortunately i feel like compared to bioware games, bethesda games do make it a bit harder to really communicate with important npcs whether that be on a platonic or romantic level, solely on account of not being able to interact with them outside of talking to them about plot events. would be nice to have a change-up of having lunch with everyone and talk about less-pressing less-main-plot-y stuff, it's a fantastic way to get some characterization laid out without having to rely on reactions to plot events to really formulate personalities. that's a minor complaint though. i like the constellation crew enough. andreja, barrett, and vladimir, shout out to them
the religious factions and their relation to the main plot (that is, revolving around the existence and abilities of the starborn) was interesting. the sanctum universum, the enlightened, house varuun, although, i guess i dont recall getting that much lore about them outside from what is given to you from main plot and specks of side plot. dunno. still, the presence kinda enriches the world of starfield.
main plot:
[starfield spoilers zone!]
uh, where to begin? i didn't really like it. my favorite part of this ordeal is the pretty light show of the artifacts and the starborn ability-unlocking. it feels like the whole "chosen one" aspect falls into your lap without any resistance or need to particularly pursue any pressing matters in particular. i can't exactly pinpoint everything i disliked about it, but i guess i can start somewhere. if anything seems off, it's because i havent picked up the game since late september, and i've played a lot of games between then and now so things are still hazy, but here's what i starkly remember:
I LIKE:
i think the hunter and emissary are interesting characters conceptually, and i did really like their banter and your dialog with them
exploring stuff back on earth and trying to kind of unravel that mystery about the destruction of humanity's home planet was really compelling! i really like this kind of "exploring the ruins to discover what went wrong" to always be fascinating, and as is with future-setting storylines, it always feels bittersweet to explore the ruins of our home planet.
scripted character death of major speaking-role npcs. this was interesting, and i was wondering what the catch would be when i found that sam died in my playthrough. (the catch was the roguelike aspect of this game which i dont like!)
I DON'T LIKE:
i dont find the pursuit of unity to be compelling. maybe this is just a me thing, but i dont really have any reason to care? i'm sure there's something to be said about how i roleplayed a character best described as "frustrated diplomat who knows they're in over their head", but nonetheless, i never found the idea to be tempting in any way. shrug.
the whole roguelike-esque "reset to a new universe and start anew" thing feels so unbelievably out of place in a bethesda roleplaying game. why. i dont have anything nice to say about this. i dont really have anything else to say in general about it. i feel like it cheapens the importance of making choices in the game and seeing how they unravel, which granted is addressed by the writing, and by hunter/emissary if i recall correctly (interesting meta, i guess), but acknowledging the fact doesnt make it feel any less cheap. shrug.
the "looking for temples with artifacts" thing felt really repetitive, and you know that's a serious complaint coming from me (a frequent enjoyer of repetition in video games)
this is a qualm with the general "chosen one" type stories more so than just starfield specifically, but since it is prominent in starfield, i will mention it: i don't really get the appeal of being put on a pedestal as the chosen one, especially when it doesnt feel like you've put in effort towards it. how npcs will praise you or express amazement at your chosen-one aspects, how your powers are so cool or unique, it just feels kind of off. i understand the appeal and the basis of why it's so prominent in video games, which is to say, the wish-fulfillment of being special and unique in a world full of people, but i feel that it singles out the protagonist and the player in a way that i find unpleasant. when i play a roleplaying game, i want to immerse myself in the world and i want to feel the world come to life around me, to experience the average hustle and bustle of daily life and to notice the societal and cultural bits and pieces in the world around me, and being singled out for being special makes it harder to integrate into the story, into the lore, and it makes it harder to feel that i have a footing in "average society presence", so to speak. i guess there's a precarious balance to be achieved between "center of the spotlight 24/7 protagonist" and "some uninteresting nobody protagonist" but it leans so hard into the former that i find it weird! just a me problem.
i understand how difficult it is to cater a main plot to a full scope of roleplayers, and i understand that it's a steep ask to request a high-stakes main plot to feel engaging when my character is a hapless frustrated well-meaning diplomat who just wants a break, so chances are i may be alone in this feeling! i wouldn't be surprised. still, though, as a lot of bethesda games manage to pull of, i have ridiculous amounts of fun in the low-stakes tiny side quests and tasks that make the mundane and unextravagant parts of world feel more alive.
[end starfield spoilers zone!]
functions and other stuff:
the outpost-building aspects and the ship-building and other-building felt particularly weak. i was never really that into the base-building aspects of fallout 4, nor did i feel particularly compelled to here either. i seem to recall that people considered base-building for resources to be a waste of time on account of the returns not being worth the effort, although that's from other people and not myself. not sure what to say about this one, aside from the fact that i don't find it engaging enough to pursue further than me putting down an outpost on some lush planet that only has 3 tiny mining rigs, a few lamps, and some mannequins that i put in inconspicuous places to jumpscare myself as soon as i forgot about them. (it worked, btw.)
anyway, a lot of this is kinda half-baked rambles that i would be happy to elaborate on if needed. i have thoughts about this game and some are nicer than others, and i dont know how much of this is coherent. most of it probably isn't. oh well!
anyway, here's my character, their name is akemi :) they/them hafu diplomat who is so tired 24/7, gets nauseous in low-gravity settings, and loves to collect plushies.
hey besties on tumblr! what are your thoughts on starfield?
tell me your praises and criticisms of it, whether you’ve just seen gameplay or it or have actually played it yourself!
(this is for a video essay, so your response may be featured in it)

So! I actually have a lot of different answers!!! I can’t really decide on one specific game, so games it is! Some of my favorite games include Kingdom Hearts, Pokemon, NieR: Automata (duh), Dungeon Defenders, and if you could not tell via my dear icons, Elsword! All of them are great games that I love for a host of reasons: characters, music, art, they’re enjoyable-- man I could kill hours on Civilization: V!
Just to scratch a few off the top.

Hello to all of my wonderful friends and fantastic readers! This may be a little different from all I have recently uploaded onto my blog, but I am coming to you guys with a little bit of an interest post in regards to something exciting that has been on my mind for quite some time now. It should come to no surprise that the massive storyline involving my Oblivion character Korbin Redd and his relationship with his adoptive siblings has been steadily growing in depth and detail over the years I have been working on it. However, what may be more of a surprise is the fact it has grown so much where I have over seventy stories that I wish to complete in this journey and then ultimately place into an official compilation entitled “Shadow and Flame” rather than “The Knight, The Emperor, And The Assassin” which you might be more familiar with. With every new development, every new story, and even every new small meme or joke post I have created over this long road has brought new readers, new interest, and support that means so much that I surely could never possibly repay. To know there are those out there that actually enjoy my writing and the things I create is something I could have only ever dreamed of having. Perhaps it is because of this very same interest and support that has led me to consider a new type of creative outlet. And thus, today I offer you all a question I would truly enjoy hearing your responses and reactions to! That question being:
“Would you join a personalized server that would be half dedicated to Korbin and his brother’s story and half dedicated to Elder Scrolls related fan content?”
Of course, I am certain most of this is very overwhelming and quite strange, but not to worry! A lot has been in development for a considerable amount of time, and if you wish to see what sort of ideas and events will be apart of this server in a much more coherent list, please feel free to look below:
=A very welcoming and casual space for LGBTQ+ Elder Scrolls fans and content creators to share their creations, original characters, worlds, and more with those who create the same~ =The Elder Scrolls related news and updates from actual games such as ESO but also from popular Mods such as Beyond Skyrim and Skyblivion =Fun events such as Screenshot and Writing Competitions, Question of the Day, Game and Movie Nights, Art and Writing Trades, and Secret Santas~ =TKTEATA related events such as Q&A, FAQ, and Suggestion sessions in both written and Voice Chat form, Writing Games, and Create a Character nights~! =Never before seen works in progress and lengthy writing scenarios based around Korbin and his brothers, early access to content before it gets posted on Tumblr such as full stories, Incorrect Quotes, edited screenshots, cover art, as well as timely updates on all things coming soon, and content based of things that have not been seen outside of Discord such as stories and edits involving my ESO Verse, Modern Verse, The Search for the Razor, The Gardener and The Mad Man, and so, so much more~!
That’s quite a lot of nice looking stuff, wouldn’t you say? There’s a lot more in the works such as fun bots, roles, and an experienced modding team to keep things friendly and enjoyable for everyone, of course, but I think for now this will suffice in the hopes of gaining interest from those who are familiar with my work, my company, or just those who are looking for a nice place to relax when they need it! Also as a side note, while my activity regarding my Tumblr has been extremely lackluster for some time, I am actually more active on Discord than ever. I rarely go a day without interacting in some fashion, and most of my work gets posted there first, as well as times where it actually gets created from chats and suggestions! So, if you ever wanted to witness my creative progress, or just wanted to have a way to interact with me one on one about anything and everything involving my TES work, or just in general, then know that this would be a very good way to do so!
In any case, please feel free to look this post over, let me know what you think by either reblogging or leaving a like, and if there are any questions, suggestions, or those falling in between, please feel free to message me either here on my Discord -- PowerOverNothing#3480 -- and I will do my very best to answer whatever I possibly can! Thanks so much for reading! And until the next post comes~! ♥

What is your favourite npc from each tes game you've played? Just curious
HMMM. hmmmmmm. hm.
alright so to get the very obvious answers out of the way i'll be disqualifying major plot-important npc's, like almalexia, lucien, etc. bc i feel like those are boring answers.
morrowind: i really liked mehra milo!! she was super interesting and really raised the stakes, and made the main plot feel less like bootleg tolkien magic prophecy nonsense and more like 1984 With Elves, which i LOVED. in wacky fantasy settings i love characters that don't really have any extraordinary powers of their own or grand designs on the future, but still help the protag to the best of their limited ability because it's the right thing to do. that's exciting!!
oblivion: oh my god, glarthir. fucking HILARIOUS. i only played oblivion a few years back so obviously i never got to experience that old-time feel of no wikis/walkthroughs for it specifically, but i did glarthir's quest totally blind with no spoilers and had a blast. he's an excellent microcosm of the very particular weirdness that makes oblivion so special and charming.
skyrim: ARGIS!! my first husband and true love out of all the possible spouses. skyrim was my first tes game, and when i played it in 2012 i was just barely 15 and still blissfully stuck in the closet... i had also just watched 2011 avengers at a friend's house, and totally latched onto mcu thor as The Ideal Man against which all others would be (impossibly) judged. y'know, #justcomphetthings. ANYWAY, argis was like a manifestation of that... i just picked the housecarl that looked like thor. over the past decade i've remade that first oc, minnie the moocher, like three or four times and married her to argis each time. i don't care if it's not gay OR that argis isn't a popular husbando!! i'm just really really invested in the dynamic between minnie and argis and i only want the best for both of them 🥺
eso: it's a tie between quen and walks-softly. what can i say, i loved the thieves guild dlc!! everyone in that guild was fantastic but these two are just the best. quen is sooo precious and sweet and MUST be protected at all times, and as for walks-softly, you know i'm always a sucker for dandies of delicate constitutions. both of them seem wildly incompatible with what you'd expect from a thieves guild, and yet they totally worked, both as individual characters and as cohesive parts of the broader narrative. AND their backstory quests were A+++ so fun to play and seriously tugged at my heartstrings!!
#yknow what this was a fun ask so as a reward i'm gonna keep anon on for a little while longer!!#shebbz shoutz#tes#long post

I'm not sure if I should make this the finale post or not to be honest because I plan on playing some of the DLCs soon, so I'll make this a 'light' finale post because I'm sure I've said more than enough through my playthrough.
Morrowind genuinely surprised me. I heard all the oldguard TES fans saying it's way different and some claiming it was miles better.
Specifically I remember when Oblivion came out I heard from somewhere that Oblivion was just "dumbed down Morrowind" and kid me was like "What the heck are you talking about, Oblivion is the best game in the world (right now)???"
But man, they weren't wrong, but that's hardly what I'd point at in Morrowind in comparison.
Then again my memory of Oblivion is all rose tinted nostalgia and half memories.
What Morrowind is to me today is a fantastic fantasy game with some really interesting lore, a villain I love, a world that feels alien, troubled, imperfect and intriguing, and a gameplay cycle that felt really satisfying to me from the very start to roughly level 20 or so.
I REALLY like how pitiful and overwhelmed I felt at the start of this game- it felt fucking awesome to me and I know for some that's a weird statement and others it's the most obvious thing in the world but man is it true.
Level 1 in Morrowind as a newbie who doesn't know up from down is like waking up in the woods naked with the sound of hungry wolves all around you.
It's brutal, and exciting- every little victory- a potion, a new dagger, a new piece of armor- feels like the world to you.
I LOVED the early game in Morrowind, more than I ever liked it in Oblivion, Fallout 3, Fallout NV, Skyrim, or Fallout 4 (yeah I'm looping the bethesda engine NV in).
Because I constantly felt like I was punching up at a behemoth but I was getting away with it from time to time until I started to feel more on par with the behemoth, and eventually I overcame and hit end game and really became the behemoth and that was fun in its own right.
But I've been "mega end game god" in like 900 dang games at this point, it's always fun! And feeling like I earned it (like here) makes it feel better! But the journey often beats it and Morrowind's journey was so fun to me.
But yeah, beat the main quest. I did a lot in this game, and barely scratched the surface.
Beating it immediately made me think of how fun it would be to challenge myself to beat it- or another objective- right from the start without dumping hundreds of hours into leveling because that early game is a treat.
About the only things I didn't fully love were most of the quest designs showing their age.
Nothing super egregious, but there really was a lot of extremely simple "fetch thing" "Kill thing" "Walk to place" quests that didn't hold additional story value to make up for it.
Not to say simple is bad, but to say having a LOT of my playtime being killing various creatures for no real story reason beyond being asked to makes some actions feel pointless and like busy-work.
There were also quests that DID tie story in, which was really nice to see- things like inter-guild relations becoming a thing for some quests, or some quests having consequences further down the quest chain depending on how you completed it, and of course (as implied) some quests having multiple solutions with some of those solutions being interesting in how you find out about them.
I mean I think it's really neat how the fighter's guild has like 4 quest givers and if you blindly follow them you'll be doing all kinds of questionable stuff with questionable end goals, but if you talk to each of them you'll find that one of them is much more trustworthy and honorable than the rest, and it becomes a common loop to be sent on a quest for the FG and swing by him to ask if the quest sounds legit- AND MANY AREN'T! AND HE OFFERS ALTERNATIVE SOLUTIONS! THAT'S COOL AND LET'S YOU MAKE THE MISTAKE OF BEING TOO LOYAL AND FORGETTING YOUR MORALS BECAUSE YOU ARE "JUST PLAYING A GAME" BUT REWARDS YOU FOR QUESTIONING THAT LOYALTY AND SEEKING ALTERNATIVE SOLUTIONS! THAT'S AWESOME! Though the solution almost always being "just talk to the good guy before you do the quest" was slightly lacking, but such a cool idea.
But there wasn't a ton of this, but there also wasn't not a lot of this- it was an idea they clearly considered playing with and did when they could- I just wish there were both more and that it was used more on the menial tasks you're asked to do as well. I'm a sucker for multiple solutions is all, and consequences appearing later and altering how events play out or quests line up is always cool and I think it only happens a couple times in some guild quests if I'm not mistaken-
But again, I didn't do much in the grand scheme of things lol.
A TON of time invested and still, a metric fuckton to do including 100% of both expansions lol.
So- Morrowind. I really like this game :)
I think it's my favorite TES game, though I might change my mind whenever I revisit TES4, but I can at least say it's my favorite early game BY FAR and PROBABLY my favorite TES game.
I wonder if I can get buff enough to kill Dagoth Ur with like potion abuse. I haven't looked into it, all I know about him (and I knew before this gameplay also, I was just attacking out of curiosity) is that phase 2 rapidly regens health at like 2 billion a second or something, so you have to one shot him if at all possible.
Also I knew that he was supposed to be weaker depending on how many ash vampires you killed, but that that wasn't properly implemented (and I don't think the morrowind code patch bothers fixing it?).
Anywho- great game. I've been playing a lot of good games lately now that I think of it. I mean most of this blog is me playing good games, but I feel like, and I could be mistaken, but I feel like there was a stint there where I was playing "complicated" games and "games I don't enjoy but want to see the merit of so I'm being a sourpuss while I play".
Now I feel like the last 10 dang games were strictly good and or great. Can't say that's a bad thing :)
If you haven't ever played Morrowind before but you're familiar with say Skyrim, I'd honestly say give it a look. A look first- because it's a thick game to begin and you might be able to discern it's not for you based off a look- but a look none the less.
It's Skyrim with more RPG nonsense going on and a more brutal "rags to riches" hero story for your protag. Might be up your alley as much as it ended up being up mine :)
So up next is EITHER an entirely different game with some ocassional Morrowind posts as I touch on the expansions, or more direct Morrowind content as I emphasize the expansions until I finish them, but I'm leaning towards the former.
I think beating the main quest has earned Vaksten the Idiot a short break.
#RetPlays#Morrowind#TES#The Elder Scrolls#Also maybe I should make a new character for the expansions so I'm not OP but I dunno#might just crank the difficulty to max instead of leaving it unaltered and say that's good enough :P#Youtube

Explaining the Iceberg finale
This one is definitely nsfw, and there’s a brief mention of abortion
Moon Cum Vaults: To preface, I hate this, i fucking hate this. This comes from a collaboration between Trainwiz (popular mod creator, made the thomas the train dragon replacer, not active much on here anymore) and MK, called Tatterdemalion, sequel to the wheels of lull. Initially had a section where Reman’s cum was placed into vaults for cryogenesis. May have had a part where you had to swim through it and female characters could get pregnant, but this is a second hand source and I don’t want to think about this any further!
Manni/Makatosh: I couldn’t find anything on this besides mentions of it as a play on ‘Macintosh’
CHIM Quantum Witness: Quantum physics is a bit above my paygrade, but essentially Quantum physics are the rules of how particles behave. A problem with Quantum physics, is that we can’t always observe how particles behave, meaning we can’t really understand how everything works. A Quantum Witness is a device or function that helps us determine if particles are ‘entangled’ which means sharing information across any period of space because they’re bonded. If you’re omnipotent with CHIM, you could act as this witness.
The Hemisker Dreamsleeve Broadcast: If you thought Hemiskir wasn’t annoying enough, he’s now projecting his speech directly into your consciousness.
Romaneli: In the redguard trailer, the titles of subsequent games were leaked well before their release date, by titles on the spines of books. After Oblivion, came ‘Romaneli’ (or what people think says Romaneli) Obviously this was changed, or it was just a placeholder name.
The Blind God: Mentioned as a dungeon name in Daggerfall, Sheogorath is in one room in this dungeon. I doubt the developers intended this to be anything, but one possible theory is that this refers to the Witness in the Enantiomorph, where the one who determines who wins out of the rebel and the king is often blinded or otherwise maimed. Magnus and Alandro Sul are examples of this.
Tiber Septim was an Orc: An interesting comment made by MK, a fan/associate of his stated ‘Everyone agrees there was a Tiber Septim’ in a discussion on what’s considered canon/not canon. MK made a pretty passive aggressive statement saying that there were 24 Tiber Septims and one was an orc, essentially making up canon to contradict someone. The teslore community seems fairly split on this issue, some defending him, others saying this wasn’t right.
Watch the Skies… : A creepypasta, not particularly good. https://creepypasta.fandom.com/wiki/Jvk1166z.esp
The confession of Boma Kyro 143: A book from ESO depicting a play that never made it to the final cut. (Also, the play it depicts is also said to have never made it to the theater)
Bug Jar Inscriptions: Anyone who's ever watched a skyrim video ever will have this recommended to them by youtube. Multiple people theorizing what those inscriptions on the bottom of the bug jar lids mean, up to theorizing they’re a giant thalmor ritual circle
Trans-Amaranthian travel: Travelling between Amaranths, if you believe Akavir is an amaranth, then this applies.
Mokafa’s theorem: Mentioned in the Four Suitors of Benitah, A character named Kena Zombel Mokafa writes out a mathematical theorem proving the man in front of him does not exist, and makes another guy disappear on the spot. Some consider this a form of zero-summing.
The Dwemer made our universe/became us: Or Kagrenac’s numidium worked and we became beyond the gods/the game and became humans in our world.
Hist Antithetical Amaranth: Memories of this seems to be vague for what i’ve seen discussed. But it seems to rely on the thought of ‘the hist-jillian’ wars being odd, considering Jills (those ‘female’ dragons) are supposed to keep order and time working right? And The hist being from a previous kalpa/connected to the infinite spirals of kalpas in the universe (according to one eso book perhaps), they could be contradictory forces and that’s why they’re fighting. MK may have backed this up, but that’s unsure.
Section 22: Mentioned in the King Edward books, Akatosh the dragon (worthy to note King Edward seems to be set in a fantastical setting, not an event of the past) says he wants to name the town he founded with King Edward and co ‘Section 22’ because it’s an alright name.
Mubcrabs run world economy: The Mudcrab merchant
Reman Tsaesci Gangbang: I don’t particularly feel like looking into this
Nightmara: Not much found for this, besides mentions of nsfw works that I will not be clicking on. Possibly a reference to a horror book? Possibly just a play on the words Mara and nightmare.
Gemile: Another really common piece of lore, Caius Cosades believes that this person was the mother of Martin Septim in a short story from Ken Rolston.
The Pig: probably a reference to the book ‘The Pig Children’
Uriel Septim’s Daughter: In the french version of the arena manual, Ariella Septim is mentioned as Uriel Septim’s daughter and the current heir to the throne. All mentions of her disappear after this.
Talin Amaranth: This one is a joke
The abortion/The Black one: A short post made by MK, before he privated his tumblr, describing a possible sequel to c0da, called Dres Irae. Dres Irae can be assumed to be the aborted child of Barenziah and Tiber Septim, and MK said this story would explore a dark future for Morrowind.
House Redoran Gravity Control: A joke from the old rp threads that made it ingame. Morrowind describes ‘gravity’ as one of the values House Redoran has.
The Fargoth Cycle: Another joke
Final thoughts: This image first popped up on 4chan around 2019, when those iceberg images were popular. Just knowing that this arose on 4chan should be a warning flag, but as I researched topics, It became more and more clear just how shitty the writers of the earlier games were. I started this as a project just for something to come back to during these months of lockdown and I don’t regret doing this, but i’ve definitely learned the extent of my distaste for hardcore fans of tes.

Skyrim SSE mod list for new playthrough.
This is the modlist and loadorder for my new Skyrim SE playthrough. Some of the ESP are not active because they are included in a merged plugin to save space but left on this list to show they have been included. There are also a few mods showing up in the load order that aren’t in the plugin list because while I wanted to include them, the build wasn’t stable enough while including them. (That doesn’t mean these mods are bad or that you shouldn’t try them, just that my load order has far to much going on in it to support that many resource heavy mods.)
