Was thinking about how often I see reactionary pro-Jiang Cheng content, and I just realized something: jc stans, just like their fav, believe that every good thing Wei Wuxian has—whether loved ones or good memories or admirable characteristics or character growth, whether canon or fanon—is actually the rightful property of Jiang Cheng that Wei Wuxian “stole” from him through the sin of existing, and it is their sworn duty to correct this “oversight” of canon.

Wei Wuxian gets his happily ever after with the love of his life, so jc stans give Jiang Cheng Lan Xichen and call Lan Wangji “second place.” Or they make Lan Wangji a cheater because “he actually likes Jiang Cheng more (who doesn’t, amiright?)” or Wei Wuxian a cheater because “he can never appreciate a good thing like Jiang Cheng can.” People point out how Wei Wuxian and Nie Huaisang seem to have had a closer relationship than Nie Huaisang and Jiang Cheng, so jc stans make the latter two a ship or make them the bestest friends ever that bond over being annoyed with Wei Wuxian. Wei Wuxian has a close relationship with the Wen siblings, so jc stans make Wen Qing spend all their time together saying that Jiang Cheng “was right” about him while Wen Ning is being “bullied” into being “anti-jc.”

Wei Wuxian is canonically smart and driven, so jc stans say that he is lazy while Jiang Cheng is hardworking. Wei Wuxian is canonically charismatic, so jc stans say that it was actually Jiang Cheng who was loved by all the disciples and is the sole reason the Jiang Clan of the present was able to pull in new disciples post-fall. Wei Wuxian loves to learn, so jc stans say that Jiang Cheng was actually a model student being sabotaged by the slovenly Wei Wuxian.

People imagine the Lan as accepting Wei Wuxian post-canon or imagine aus where the Lan adopt him as a child, so jc stans make Jiang Cheng the adopted Lan child, who Lan Qiren now likes better than his own nephews. People write Nie!wwx, so jc stans write about how “actually” Nie Mingjue sees Jiang Cheng as the brother he never had and views Wei Wuxian as an unwanted nuisance and competition. People make the most batshit ooc au where the QishanWen are actually good and adopt Wei Wuxian, and jc stans turn that into actually, the Jiang siblings are adopted while Wei Wuxian stays with the “totally horrible, abusive” father in Yunmeng. Fucking Baoshan Sanren descends from her mountain to look for her martial grandson, and jc stans will shove Jiang Cheng into the narrative as a disciple because “he’s just so lovable!” In all of these cases, some will still imagine that Wei Wuxian still gets left on the streets as a petty afterthought.

Shit, even some of the BAD things that happen to Wei Wuxian canonically are misappropriated by jc stans to give Jiang Cheng unearned sympathy. Wei Wuxian was whipped as a child? Now Jiang Cheng was too, but also his dad hates him. Wei Wuxian is an orphan who creates his own family in adulthood? Jiang Cheng is now disowned/an unloved runaway who later finds his people because who wouldn’t want him (amiright?). Wei Wuxian was at risk of losing his golden core completely in the transfer if it failed? Well Jiang Cheng was going to DIE! “See? Look how much harder Jiang Cheng’s life was than that pathetic attention whore Wei Wuxian! Doesn’t he deserve all the things Wei Wuxian has? Aren’t they rightfully his???”

And it’s like, you can’t even escape into fan content with this type of mentality, because look out how much I mentioned is popular fanon. Notice how ubiquitous these ideas are surrounding anything to do with Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng, even if only one of them is mentioned. No matter what anyone reads in the novel, no matter what individuals come up with in their own heads, no matter what tag or platform is used or not used to keep it out of their hands, jc stans will be there to create a reactionary counterpart to prove that nothing, nothing can ever just be Wei Wuxian’s. Because at the end of the day, the “oversight” that jc stans want to correct isn’t Jiang Cheng’s supposed depreciation by the author. The “oversight” was the author daring to say that Wei Wuxian deserves to be treated as his own person and not Jiang Cheng’s personal property. And every fandom interaction has been retaliation towards that fact.

The main character of the novel is relegated to mere a lightning rod that exists to attract all of Jiang Cheng’s bad qualities while injecting him with all of Wei Wuxian’s good, but jc stans wonder why people are upset.

In one of the extras JGY talks about how JC has Chenqing so other people do know he has it. He specifically says he has it to bait WWX and that everyone considers him a mad dog obsessed with a dead person. The first thing he does when he suspects MXY is WWX is hit him with Zidian which would have killed WWX if he was possessing the body. And he plans to torture WWX before JL distracts him and threatens him with scattering WN ashes so he can’t get a proper burial. So I do think he hates WWX.

1. I don't really consider the extras to be part of the main story, but sure. JGY knowing about something does not equal it being common knowledge, my man Jiggy knows a lot of things he shouldn't. JC does want to speak to WWX, he refuses to believe he's dead, and there's a lot of anger and pain still there. But bait implies that it's some kind of trap, and I don't think that's it. He does want WWX to come to him, but I don't think he's thought much further than that. Because when he does have WWX alone he does pretty much nothing except scare him.

2. If WWX was possessing MXY it would've been completely justified to expell him. End of story. It would mean he was a vengeful spirit that had taken over and supressed the soul of the body's owner. I don't think it would've given JC any peace of mind though and then any way of clearing the air would be gone.

3. He does not. He first thinks about about torture on Dafan Mountain, when it's still unclear if it's MXY or WWX, but there is definitely demonic cultivation going on so of course he wants to get to the bottom of it. When he captures WWX later, knowing for sure it's him, and has him alone with Fairy the only thing he says or thinks about doing is this: "Don't worry, you can go back to Lotus Pier and say your excuses while kneeling in front of my parents' graves." That's it.

4. Jiang Cheng absolutely hates Wen Ning. But that's another discussion.

it's wen ning's birthday so i'm taking the opportunity to say FUCK fan content that centers around his family members but has me like hansel and gretel, chasing crumbs to find where the hell wen ning went. maybe instead of writing a million posts about how no one appreciates jiang cheng's singular good deed we can all take a second to think about wen ning, who was actually consistently there for his family and was willing to take real risks to defend those he loves.

wen ning is the only little brother here who stood by wei wuxian at every turn & wei wuxian clearly adores and cares for him. people keep writing aus where jiang cheng is better to wei wuxian but that's just wen ning! wen ning is who everyone wants jiang cheng to be! he's loyal and sweet and hurt and lonely, and so powerful and brave despite the constant undermining of his skills. when wen ning lost his clan and family he focussed on cherishing and protecting those he had left, because he just wants them to be safe and happy, but jiang cheng was content leaving wei wuxian to die the second he became too inconvenient.

#1: Lan Wangji / Wei Wuxian:

Also known as “wangxian”, this ship is the main canonical couple for mo dao zu shi! Lan Wangji is the taller guy in white and blue, whereas Wei Wuxian is the shorter guy in black and red. They are very much an opposites attract sort of couple. Lan Wangji is a strict, law-abiding man, who likes his routines, his studies, and his peace and quiet. Whereas Wei Wuxian is a mischievous prankster with a hero complex that compels him to rush headlong into danger. Surprisingly, although Wei Wuxian was always teasing Lan Wangji when they were teenagers, Lan Wangji developed a crush on his tormentor, and has been hopelessly pining after Wei Wuxian for about eighteen years. Unfortunately, Lan Wangji is REALLY bad with expressing emotions (I personally headcanon Lan Wangji as autistic, because he’s also fairly semi-verbal), so for most of those years Wei Wuxian thought Lan Wangji absolutely hated his guts.

After Wei Wuxian dies and comes back to life (not a spoiler, I promise, this is the premise of the entire story, scene one begins with Wei Wuxian’s resurrection), Lan Wangji just spoils Wei Wuxian like mad because he’s just so glad that he got a second chance to be Wei Wuxian’s friend

They’re honestly one of the cutest fictional couples I’ve come across in a long time. Their ship has everything: childhood friends, enemies to lovers, slow burn, unrequited love, hurt/comfort, etc.

#2: queerplatonic Wei Wuxian / Wen Ning:

So this ship involves Wei Wuxian (from ship #1) with his zombie bff Wen Ning, who is a literal cinnamon roll. Despite being what is known as a “fierce corpse”, Wen Ning is actually a nervous bug who just wants to help others. However, Wen Ning does have a fierce loyalty to Wei Wuxian, who stood up for him once when he was being publicly shamed by his sect. I like the idea of Wen Ning and Wei Wuxian developing a semi-platonic, semi-romantic relationship, so he can continue to third wheel for the rest of his afterlife.

#3.1: Jiang Cheng / Wen Qing:

So this is kind of an odd one! That is to say, it’s not a particularly popular ship. They don’t even really interact, except in the live action, which deviates so much from the original story that it’s really it’s own separate thing. But I personally really like their dynamic! They’ve very similar characters. Jiang Cheng (the purple guy) is temperamental, overly competitive, and extremely hard working. Wen Qing (the girl in red) is similarly headstrong, short tempered, and devoted to her career. Unfortunately, they don’t have a chance to have a happy ending in canon. Sect rivalries get in the way, but that only makes me want it more. I love divergent fics where these two wind up working together. Many of those fics involve a political marriage, to cease war between their sects. And of course that marriage of convenience always turns into real love! Maybe it’s a cliche but I don’t care, it’s so good!

Ship #3.2: Jiang Cheng / Nie Huaisang:

This is a slightly more popular pairing for the ye olde sour grape (Jiang Cheng). This ship pairs Jiang Cheng with resident cowardly lion Nie Huaisang, an effeminate guy with an eye for fine art and a slight flair for the dramatic. The two were friends in school, but have since grown apart. Again, the main appeal of this ship is the whole opposites attract thing. However, I like both chengqing (Jiang Cheng / Wen Qing) and sangcheng (Jiang Cheng / Nie Huaisang), so of course I said “fuck it, Jiang Cheng should date both”.

Jiang Cheng notably has some very strict guidelines when it comes to the ideal woman he wants to marry: “naturally beautiful, graceful and obedient, hard-working and thrifty, coming from a respected family, cultivation [magic] level not too high, personality not too strong, not too talkative, voice not too loud and must treat Jin Ling [his nephew] nicely.” I think it’s neat that half of these could apply to Wen Qing, while the other half could apply to Nie Huaisang: Wen Qing is naturally beautiful, Nie Huaisang is graceful and obedient, Wen Qing is hard-working and thrifty, Nie Huaisang comes from a respected family, and his magic level isn’t too high, Wen Qing’s personality is not too strong, she’s not too talkative, and her voice is not too loud. And finally, I think both of them would treat Jiang Cheng’s nephew nicely.

Also, there’s just something so delectable about the idea of Jiang Cheng having a very effeminate boyfriend and a very masculine girlfriend.

And last, but not least, ship #4: Jin Zixuan / Jiang Yanli:

Jin Zixuan and Jiang Yanli (ship name: xuanli) are an especially adorable married couple in the story. Jiang Yanli is the elder sister to both Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng, and while they are both hard-headed and loud, Jiang Yanli is quiet and serene, but with an iron backbone. She stands up for what is right, even when it scares her half to death to do so. She also likes to dote on people. Jin Zixuan is the rich guy she was betrothed to from childhood. She’s loved him since the beginning, but he didn’t always love her. See, Jin Zixuan is a spoiled brat, who is as prideful as a peacock. He thought that any women who showed interest in him was only after his money, so he keeps all women at arm’s length. But surprise! Jiang Yanli liked Jin Zixuan for his personality all along. And once Jin Zixuan realizes that, he grows to love her in turn.

A lot of people will tell you that Jiang Yanli “deserves better”, and while I think that’s true in general, I don’t know if that applies to Jin Zixuan. Despite his inflated ego, he’s actually a pretty good guy. I can’t tell you why without getting into spoilers, but trust me when I say that there’s more to him than meets the eye.

1. How Do I Feel About Him?

Jiang Cheng reminds me so thoroughly of my own kid sister in temperment that every time he comes onscreen I experience a visceral sibling reaction. I love him because I love her, but if my sister had a different personality I would probably feel considerably less kindly towards him. He took a minute to warm up to, but now I think of him fondly.

2. Romantic Entanglements for Mr. Jiang:

I’m on the ChengNing train now and I’ll tell you why that is: SangCheng is fun but I don’t think it has any longterm power due to it being based more around who they were as teenagers than who they’ve become as adults. HOWEVER I think that being members of the We Know What Happened To The Core Club, as well as the We Love And Miss Wen Qing Club, he and Wen Ning have the opportunity to commiserate about some stuff and since they are also members of the Wei Wuxian Is Important To Us Club, that’s another thing in their favor. I think their personalities would be good complements, if only because they could supply each other with things they’re lacking in themselves (and that’s why I think Huaisang and he wouldn’t be a good couple as well; they’ve grown too jaded and similar in the years since their brothers died. They can share experiences, but I don’t think that’s the only thing to base a ship on).

3. Non-Romantic OTP (god that still feels goofy. Non-Romantic Teamup? idk):

This one’s a threefer because the man truly was happiest when goofing off with his two beloved siblings, and in a just world he would still be doing that to this day.

4. Unpopular Opinion:

As above, I’m just not that interested in SangCheng. Don’t HATE it, but it’s not top priority, you know? Other opinion that may be less common: I read the last scene with him I think a lot more charitably than some people might be inclined to. And it depends on translation, because some of them are more blunt and some of them waffle around the subject a bit more, but it truly didn’t feel to me that he was accepting the natural end of a brotherhood. And that could also have absolutely nothing to do with dialogue and more to do with Wang ZuoCheng’s many yearning expressions, but I got the distinct sense that I wasn’t witnessing an ending so much as a transition. After all, once he lets go of his preconceived notions about what their siblinghood IS, there’s room to turn it into something completely new. Think the Death card in tarot: it’s not a card about death. It’s a card about change.

But I’m also aware that I think of it this way specifically because of my own relationship with my sister, which is frequently in a state of flux as we try to understand one another as people instead of family.

5. Things It Would’ve Been Nice To See In Canon:

How I feel about this character

I love him so much OMG… I was just thinking, yesterday or maybe this morning, that it’s early to tell, y’know, but he might join my ~FAVORITES OF ALL TIME.~

He is just!  Set up so well, (~it’s cheating,~ no, that was gonna be a post), he loses so fucking much (parents, foster family/home, newly created found family/home, beloved sister, #it’s complicated wrt beloved brother, um, magical ability (#it’s complicated), hm, DIES), and he also - gets? does? etc. so fucking much.  He’s good at way too many things tbh, at fighting and playing the flute (it’s also a form of fighting, it’s a magical flute), at charming people and inventing ~NEW MAGICS~ and… pissing people off? that’s a skill lol?  He takes up farming/gardening, cause he rescued a bunch of prisoners of war who need something to eat, (and he misses food from home); he takes up raising a very small boy (he says! miss me with saying he’s not!) as his own, because someone needed to, because he was one of those same prisoners of war.

He NEVER FUCKING STOPS, no matter what anyone thinks, no matter the cost.  He’ll take a curse mark on himself or go into a dangerous trance or (any number of other things that happen in the plot) for someone he doesn’t know, or doesn’t like… just because he thinks he can, is a lot of it, and isn’t that fascinating.  And because he can, he couldn’t not.

What I meant, though, re: ~the man is non-stop!~, is: he does it with a smile, a laugh, a joke.  A bowl of wine and a delighted stroll through the woods, looking around at the leaves, or a stop at a stall selling snacks or cute ornaments.  He’s always working, always thinking, always playing - and! these are the same thing! for him!  Even though his play definitely can get more physical than anything else, there’s always still this alertness looking around for an unexpected trick.  And the work he chooses to do, not the fighting, but invention and the studying to back it up, traveling and helping people with their monster/ghost/spirit problems… that’s play, for him, it’s fun.  There’s always something new and interesting to see or find or learn or make.

All the people I ship romantically with this character

LAN WANGJI aka his canonical soulmate/boyfriend/husband/cultivation partner, the one who knows him!, my heart.  Howwww… can I explain their connection?  They love each other, of course, and probably more importantly, they get each other… they trust each other, they work so well together, they make each other so happy.  That’s one of the things that I love, that although they’re both people who are highly liked and/or admired generally in their society on a superficial level, that they’re both fucking weird people?  Wei Wuxian is charming and Lan Wangji is impeccably virtuous (and they’re both very talented), but when you get to know them, Wei Wuxian never fucking shuts the fuck up and Lan Wangji will barely say one single word… they’re both a lot to handle, in a number of different ways!  But they.  Just like each other, a lot.

And the trust between these two.  Slays me.  Wei Wuxian lets Lan Wangji hold a sword to his throat, cause he knows Lan Wangji will know if he’s ~gone too far.~  Lan Wangji defies his clan, his family, the whole cultivation world, for Wei Wuxian, because he knows, that Wei Wuxian is and was right.  They pursue justice, goodness, together… they find it in each other.

People try to set up an opposition between ‘marry your best friend’ and ‘star crossed lovers’ high-drama types of scenarios?  But these epic losers (she says with love) are both… there’s no reason why not, after all.  And I love ‘em SO MUCH.

JIANG CHENG, who is is his foster brother.  Usually I’m not one for incest?  It only tends to be something I ship when a sibling bond between characters is broken, or twisted, … or fails to really exist in the case of Luke/Leia type scenarios.  (I have never watched a Star War, but I did read Splinter of the Mind’s Eye, okay.)  The relationship between Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng (and their sister, Jiang Yanli), very very much does exist, but… Jiang Cheng stabbed his sword into the rock of the cliff that Wei Wuxian was hanging off of, and yelled at him to go to hell.  And Wei Wuxian finished yeeting himself off the cliff, and D I E D.

(it’s totally a romantic setup!  what!?)

Anyway, they both really really love each other, they need to reconcile ASAP PLZ, and pairs of characters who both really really love each other but also have deeply conflicted and fucked up and sometimes even murdery intentions towards each other are extremely my jam.  I want to smush them together!  Mostly involving conversations, and extremely fraught invitations to visit, and small significant gestures.  But also sometimes involving sex, because… why not.

SOMETIMES JIANG YANLI, though only in concert with Jiang Cheng as an OT3, because if Jiang Yanli’s still alive… you can’t have two of the three siblings together ~like that~ without a third.  (So I guess this is the first exception that I’ve found so far to my usual pattern!  Of only shipping incest when it’s already all fucked up.  Jiang Cheng’s got enough fucked-up-ness for the all of them?).  Anyway, I would like to thank the scene where Jiang Yanli shows Wei Wuxian her wedding dress for including the line from Jiang Cheng ‘you don’t think she’d marry you!?’ (to which I always say, it’s okay, Jiang Cheng, no one is leaving you out! how very dare you).

Together the two of them (Jiang Yanli and Wei Wuxian) are sweet and mutually supportive, and simply the delight of fucking even further with societal expectation and rumor is not going to get me shipping that.  But as a threesome!  Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian struggle with issues of insecurity, of jealousy, vis-a-vis family, and poor Yanli - she’s always trying to be enough for both of them, for everyone, and it must be very hard, … she reconciles the two of them, it’s a pattern, and they’re more united in thinking she deserves the world than they are in anything else.  It can be fun to play with.

WEN NING!!  Wei Wuxian walked away from his family and set his face against the cultivation world for Wen Ning, and Wen Qing, and their followers.  He says he would’ve done it for anyone, but in fact he does it - the prison break, the dive all the way down into dark magic - for Wen Ning.  He brings Wen Ning back to life.  Which is a huge gift, but not necessarily one that Wen Ning would’ve accepted?  But.  He doesn’t get to be asked, he was dead.

And Wen Ning, in turn, is just ridiculously incredibly loyal to Wei Wuxian.  It’s part of how Wei Wuxian brought him back to life, but - he’s the knife in Wei Wuxian’s hand.  (That’s almost literally what his sister, Wen Qing, says).  That sort of intimacy, being a human weapon, turning over your own volition, (not voluntarily! but Wen Ning’s okay with the fact that it’s a thing that happens!), to someone else, is… man, it’s a lot.

And there’s also the things Wen Ning does control: after Wei Wuxian comes back from the dead, (so they’re undead buddies! ;) in different ways), he follows Wei Wuxian everywhere he goes.  Which causes some problems!  One cannot have a zombie everywhere, with one, at all times.  Even if he does save your life when you don’t expect needing it.  … so, anyway, they both do these huge amounts of things for each other.  They won’t give up on each other.  They keep trying to take care of each other - Wei Wuxian gives Wen Ning his sword to wield.  They never ever meant to depend on each other like this, but that’s what happened when they wouldn’t let go - and now they don’t need to, by the end of the story.  But that story is A LOT, and I want them closer, and also to fuck with the controlling-the-undead angle ;).

XUE YANG!  This is a never-ending list, lol.  Anyway, if Jiang Cheng was the answer of ‘ship my two favorite characters,’ this is very much the answer of ‘ship the two characters that are hottest to me.’  ;).  Anyway, I should point out that I don’t ship-ship them.  Xue Yang’s a mass-murdering sociopath.  And even if you can catch him in the plot before he goes all mass-murdery… Wei Wuxian would never love Xue Yang.  (Never-minding the distinction between ‘love’ and ‘in love with,’ he definitely loves all the above.)  But would Wei Wuxian fuck Xue Yang?  Maybe!  If you can set it up right.

(my current attempt stalled out with Xue Yang threatening to murder a small child in Wei Wuxian’s care, so… there’s no fucking in that case.)

Anyway.  They’re very similar in some ways.  They’re fearless, they really really hate boredom, they love to fuck around… just for fun.  They’re both curious!  When Xue Yang meets Wei Wuxian, for the first time, he asks him about the charm Wei Wuxian had invented that he’s fighting him with.  While they’re fighting.  (Which really strikes me as a very Wei Wuxian move.)  Pity about the being evil thing, lol.  But Xue Yang is a demonic cultivator who’s following on the magical paths that Wei Wuxian laid out… so a sorta teacher/disciple thing could be interesting.  Again!  If you could get around the killing people thing for just a second, before of course bringing it back in to smash everything down.

and that is, finally, all the major answers re: actively shipping, (really my main ships in this show are Wei Wuxian/almost everyone he significantly interacts with, and then I guess some other people who aren’t Wei Wuxian can also have some ships too?), but a few more quick answers I’d Definitely Read:

NIE HUAISANG in a friends-who-have-sex way back during their time in summer school together.  You can’t tell me Lan Wangji thought that he wasn’t walking in on a Wei Wuxian/Jiang Cheng/Nie Huaisang orgy, that one time!  You can’t tell me that Nie Huaisang lent Wei Wuxian gay porn book(s?) and never at least tittered about the idea!  Their friendship at that point isn’t all that deep but… I think they both might very well find it a fun way to ~let off steam,~ or whatever, and I’d be into it.

WEN QING, even though I really like the fact that her friendship with Wei Wuxian is a hundred percent platonic (yes, it is, I’ll fight you).  I love how they run the Burial Mounds together, I love the mutual sympathy and the mix of teasing and deadly seriousness in their dynamic, what I really want is SO MUCH MORE of just their friendship - and working-together partnership! - but, you see, I have a weakness, for friends who are not romantic!  Just friends!  But they fuck once or twice or in a while for fun, in between doing things that are more important.

(Also I particularly like when they’re exes who are better off as friends, in a modern AU?  Idk somehow it just feels like a perfect fit for these two.)

… and I realize belatedly that the question asked ‘romantically’ and not ‘non-romantic fuck-buddies’ and therefore half of my answers don’t even apply, but whatever, I do what I want, and honestly for non-OTP-level ships I’m just as likely to ship them as fuckbuddies as I am romantically.  So there, meme, I cannot be constrained.

My non-romantic OTP for this character

I COMPLETELY REFUSE TO CHOOSE: like, okay, fixing his relationship with his brother is the number-one most important thing to me about how canon ended.  So I guess??  I’d have to say that??  YUNMENG SHUANGJIE (the Pride Twins of Yunmeng) 4EVER, sure, definitely.  They both sacrificed everything for each other!  More importantly, to me, I think both… of them, just really miss each other a lot.  Jiang Cheng’s fucking furious at Wei Wuxian, and Wei Wuxian’s pretty much given up on making any sort of attempt to change that, but I love them both and want them both to have everything that they still can that they want in life, and that means each other.

But I also love Wei Wuxian’s friendship with Wen Ning!  And his friendship with Wen Qing!  So much!!!  They are ALSO family, okay, they made a new home together (and then it died) ;___;.

And then!!!  The way he relates to the kids!  Is just so wonderful.  I love how he tries to be the ‘cool uncle’ to Jin Ling, how he balances the side of ‘I was an obnoxious brat too at your age… and in fact I kinda still am!’ with being a very responsible and caretaking adult.  I love the way that he gets down in the mud and plays with Sizhui as A-Yuan, being silly, and is also so thrilled and proud of Sizhui as an adult.  So uh yeah these are all of my favorite things

My unpopular opinion about this character

Hmmm I’m not so sure what’s unpopular.  (Besides a lot of my non-canon-OTP ship choices, but those aren’t really ‘opinions about the character.’  I don’t think he’s likely in near-canon-verses to be with anyone besides his husband, I just like stories where it can happen!).

I think I’ll say: I think he’s generally a pretty happy person.  He hides suffering with smiles, certainly!  That’s what he does!  But even though he has lost a lot - and even though I think he feels guilt over some things, like his sister’s death, and his nephew’s being an orphan - he doesn’t tend to dwell, on either the sorrow or the guilt in his life.  He is genuinely pretty okay... and finds ways to be okay, even happy, even in the worst parts of his life, day-to-day!  Even in the Burial Mounds, for example, when he’s missing his family and his almost-not-quite-yet boyfriend, ... sometimes he drowns in the missing, yeah, but far more often he’s happy with the things and the people that he’s growing there.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon

HE AND LAN WANGJI SHOULD HAVE KISSED???  That’s the most obvious and unarguable thing.  They’re together, they’re so fucking together… on the steps of Carp Tower, in ep 42?  Or maybe in the snowy night in the Jingshi, in ep 43, before the scene faded away (to black).  (And presumably multiple times in the eps after that, but, eh, whatever).  The only reason why this didn’t happen is censorship - though I do admit, I love all the post-canon get-together fics.

Also: HE SHOULD”VE STAYED AT CLOUD RECESSES???  With Lan Wangji???  Or Lan Wangji should’ve gone with him, to ~wander the world together,~ though personally I prefer the ‘Lan Wangji is Chief Cultivator’ ending.  Anyway the fact that they separated is bullshit, (although, yes, I know all about that reunion implied in the last scene, but it’s not really satisfactory imo)… but, again, censorship.  And, again, I love!  All the post-canon fics where Wei Wuxian wanders around for some time before he finally ~comes back home~ to Lan Wangji.

Also also: if we’re talking about artistic decisions that weren’t cause of censorship: he and Jiang Cheng should’ve thawed just a little.  Been just a little bit more hopeful.  Towards each other, at the end of the show.  Jiang Cheng wanting to say something, but not..?  It was very ow, to me, it’s not a bad ow, but it needs to be remedied.  Let Jiang Cheng find a way to be able to tell his brother he misses and still loves him, please.

How I feel about this character: I love her so much and she deserved so much BETTER like both in that she should have lived and that there are so many little seeds of her being such a badass but she was infected with mxtx sexist brainrot and was simmered down to a helpless damsel in distress nothing beyond that. the way she took care of her bby brothers reminds me of my sister and I so I can never have a cohesive thought about them cuz I just start crying. like I'm literally crying right now

All the people I ship romantically with this character: even tho jin zixuan was an asshole he really did love jiang yanli and I think the bits we see of them when they're actually Together are very sweet. I am a big yanqing stan tho sometimes I just sit and think about how well wen qing and jiang yanli compliment each other like. narratively and I'm like holy fucking shit and that's not even getting into the fact that I just think it would be sweet :^)

Anything goes, but I think I’m going to stick with The Untamed, Word of Honor, Final Fantasy (specifically FFXIV), and Persona for these since since they’re the fandoms I’m most actively seeking out content for.

1: What OTPs in your fandom(s) do you just not get?

Obligatory disclaimer that if you (general you) like any of these, that’s totally fine; I’ve limited myself to ones that just make me go “Huh?” instead of ones I actively dislike. (I’m also going to censor ship names—even the ones I like—so I don’t clog up ship tags.)

For The Untamed: Pretty much any post-canon Jiang Cheng ship that isn’t Cheng//qing in a Wen Qing lives AU. (Though I’m intrigued by Cheng//ning or Jiang Cheng throupling it up with Wang//xian, depending on the circumstances.) I feel like there’s a general fandom desire to see Jiang Cheng in a relationship, but there just aren’t that many characters still alive and single by the end of the series, and I personally don’t see them as having the kind of automatic chemistry with JC that most of the fandom clearly sees.

Also most F/F Mianmian ships, because for some reason fandom has made Mianmian the patron saint of girl-kissing even though she doesn’t interact with most of the ladies she gets shipped with. (All while completely sleeping on other F/F ships like Madam Yu/Madam Jin, I might add.)

Word of Honor: …So I actually do get it, but I am mildly puzzled at just how popular Ye//xie has become. Like, it’s currently tied with one of the canon couples on AO3, and the only ships that outnumber it are THE main couple and RPF of the main couple’s actors. Not bad for a ship that has one canon interaction and seems to be mostly built on the idea of cucking Zhao Jing for great justice. XD (Though I might have to be the change I want to see in the world and create content for a Scorpion Sect/Bureau of the Unfaithful polycule.)

Final Fantasy: I’m not going to touch any of the single-player games with a thirty-nine and a half foot pole, as some of those ship wars have been raging so long they’re old enough to drink; I will instead kick the hornet’s nest that is FFXIV and say I do not understand the appeal of the cherry catboy. XD Specifically people trying to push him as the canon love interest for the WoL (player character).

Persona: Pretty much any Sumire ship besides her with Joker because P5R doesn’t do the best job of integrating her into the Phantom Thieves, but Sumi//taba in particular because it actually crops up as a side pairing in a lot of fics despite them barely interacting.

5: Has fandom ever ruined a pairing for you?

Not ruined, per se, but…

The Untamed: So I do like Wang//xian, but I don’t follow many Wang//xian-focused blogs due to how many of them uphold the main pairing as the true arbiters of moral virtue and spend a good chunk of their time hating on my favorite characters.

Also most Wen Qing ships, because there’s a tendency among fans who ship her with characters besides Jiang Cheng to warp him into a pushy incel. And Cheng//su because the idea of it was cute at first, but I quickly discovered that some fans (especially the ones who added Nie Huaisang to the mix) were Jin Guangyao haters whose main draw to the pairing was seeing Jin Guangyao get cheated on.

Final Fantasy: I have become so thoroughly sick of every couple involved in FFVII’s Love Triangle Debate that even seeing one of them in passing causes me to roll my eyes. XD Also I still ship WoL/Emet-Selch to a certain extent, but I’ve been side-eyeing other shippers over their behavior post-EW. It’s like getting the slightest hint of official approval got to their heads, and they started pearl-clutching over other WoL/villain ships even though they were on the receiving end of that behavior not too long ago.

Persona: In a similar vein, Ake//shu; I still ship it, but I’m very picky about both characterization as well as the writer’s opinions on other morally ambiguous sadboys, as there was a wave of hypocritical moralizing from some Ake//shu shippers after P5R’s vindication. (Like, “If you own a Darth Vader Funko Pop, you should be put before a firing squad!” while happily stanning the pancake boy and saying he should have a little more murder, as a treat.) In particular, I truly loathe the widely-accepted fanon that turns one of my favorite new characters into a mustache-twirling cardboard cutout of a villain who only exists in their fics to create scenarios that one half of Ake//shu must rescue the other from.

6: Has fandom ever made you enjoy a pairing you previously hated?

Not that I can think of, no.

Nope, as I turned anon asks off back when I first made my blog all those years ago. XD

12: Is there an unpopular arc that you like that the fandom doesn’t? Why?

Can’t think of any for The Untamed, Word of Honor, or Persona, but…

Final Fantasy: I’m going to be basic and say that ARR and SB both get way more hate than they deserve; ARR provides the setup for so much amazing payoff in ShB and EW that I’m flabbergasted at the people who still insist you should just skip it, and SB might split its attention too much, but it has a lot of standout moments. (Plus it properly introduces Zenos, and for that alone it deserves all the love.)

20: What is the purest ship in the fandom?

I don’t typically consider “pure” to be s as compliment, so I’ll interpret this one as which ship makes me go “D’aww!”

The Untamed: Honestly kind of hard to narrow down; I have a lot of ships, and most of them make me go “D’aww.” Jin Guangyao ships in particular often get that reaction out of me. (Which probably doesn’t fit the original “pure” definition, but meh.)

Word of Honor: Gu Xiang/Cao Weining. (What’s their ship name?) I’m rewatching WoH with my sister this time, and literally any time they interact we both go “D’aww!”

Final Fantasy: WoL/Haurchefant, I say through my tears. XD

Persona: From P3, I’d say FeMC with any of her love interests. (Except Ken.)

23: Unpopular character you love?

Oh, so very many. XD

The Untamed: Jiang Cheng, Jin Guangyao, and Su Minshan are the big ones; Su Minshan is probably the only one of those three who’s genuinely unpopular, as Jiang Cheng and Jin Guangyao do have their fair share of fans. (Their haters just tend to be uniquely unhinged; I almost added Xue Yang here, but at least his haters usually limit themselves to hating him for the crimes he actually committed in canon instead of making shit up.) Also Jiang Yanli doesn’t have tons of haters, but the ones she has can get weirdly intense about it?

Persona: Takuto Maruki did nothing wrong, actually. XD Yet another character who has done bad things, but the fandom seems determined to blame him for shit he didn’t do or ascribe motives to his actions that directly contradict canon.

26: Most shippable character?

The Untamed: Jin Guangyao, by a landslide. XD Most characters I can imagine one or two ships for, maybe three or four, but he gets a whole fucking armada.

Word of Honor: Maybe Liu Qianqiao? I think she’s the character who has the most “Ooh, maybe there could be something there?” moments with other characters. (Though it is a closer race than The Untamed, with Zhou Zishu and Xie’er not too far behind, if not tied.)

Persona: The protagonists. XD

27: Least shippable character?

Leaving aside characters obviously meant to be unlikeable, of course.

The Untamed: Nie Mingjue and Song Lan; I can’t quite put my finger on why, but I do find it kind of difficult to ship them outside of 3//zun and Song//xue//xiao, respectively. (And with the former, I can be very picky about 3/:zun characterization and dynamics, as I tend not to ship it in the sense of it being fully reciprocated on all three sides at the same time.) Jin Zixuan can also be kind of difficult to ship with people besides Jiang Yanli, but the reverse does not hold true for me.

Word of Honor: Zhang Chengling, mostly because there aren’t really any characters close to him in age besides his eventual, post-canon wife.

Persona: For P3, saying Ken is kind of like shooting fish in a barrel, so I’ll say Junpei because he’s in a relationship with Chidori but Atlus not being able to decide whether she’s canonically dead or alive kind of leaves him in limbo. (Though of the newer games, P3 seems to have the fewest bits of ship tease between the party members, with Yuka//mitsu being the one with the strongest backing.) For P4, probably Rise, because she’s pretty thoroughly focused on Yu, but if you decide not to romance her there isn’t really a default backup ship for her like Yuki//chie or Kan//nao. For P5, Sumire, as previously mentioned.
