Oban Star Racers Starters (part 2)
"Good thing I ate light."
"How was today's training?"
"They're making good progress. You'll be very happy."
"Me, me, me. A simple 'good luck' would be nice just once."
"Thinking about your dad again?"
"Now's the time to show Daddy what you're really made of."
"Unfortunately my dad happens to be a complete jerk."
"Keep digging. Remember I don't like surprises."
"Out of my way! I need this victory!"
"Cut her some slack, you're just gonna freak her out."
"I asked you to coach them, not me."
"What do you think I'm doing? Knitting you a sweater?"
"You did the best you could to stop them, but they still won the race."
"Maybe it's time you got a life."
"My life is perfectly fine as it is, thank you."
"I'd sure hate to be your son. Or for that matter, your daughter."
"You really have no sense of adventure."
"We're racing. Or was that not obvious enough for you?"
"I cut all links to my past in order to survive."
"I can't believe you managed to keep this from me all these years."
"Let's get out there and kick some alien butt!"
"You'd think I'd be more relaxed by now, but it's just the opposite."
"The higher we climb, the more I fear our fall."
"I don't make a habit of befriending opponents. It can lead to disappointment."
"I'm counting on you, my darling."
"Have you ever known me to be careless, honey?"
"I know that wicked creature."
"If we don't get him, he'll get us!"
"This creature is evil. We have to get rid of him, trust me."
"I'm asking you for the last time! Come to your senses!"
"I know who you are. You're not alone in life."
"I wish you would never have left me."
"Your optimism is commendable but I find that unlikely."
"Our relationship has always been rather tense, wouldn't you say?"
"If I was your daughter, I'd never want to see you again!"
"I just wanted to cheer on the kids."
"This is much better than being in the hospital."
"I do this under protest."
"Not even I could have pulled that stunt."
"Please don't look at me this way. It only makes it harder."
"It's time for me to think about my new life."
"You could sleep through anything."
"They've not been locked in. We've simply been locked out."
"I could stay here forever."
"Don't even breathe. Run for your life when I say go."
"I'm told he won't bite."
"On my planet, when you make a promise you keep it."
"Any attempt of a competitor's life is strictly forbidden!"
"If you're ready, we're off to the races!"
"I'm just keeping an eye on him. There's no law against that is there?"
"We don't need a dad to come along."
"I hope you're pleased with yourself. I was scared, you know!"
"Next time you're thinking of going on a little stroll, you're on your own."
"Where on earth have you been? We've been worried sick!"
"I'd advise you not to take my authority lightly."
"So long, pretty boy, I'll send you a card."
"I refuse to believe it's the end of the world."
"Oh great. Let them eat somebody else."
"That man is totally heartless."
"I never miss a music recital. Would you care to join. me?"
"No need to worry. ___'s in good hands."
"Oh, brilliant shortcut. We should just announce ourselves."
"You'll find heaters in the storage area."
"What'd she do? Steal from your shop? Leave her hotel room without paying for it?"
"She was up all night waiting for your call."
"I'm gonna win the race today!"
"I knew today was my day."
"So many possibilities... It's beautiful."
"The day a tin can gets the better of me I quit."
"Looks like we have a clear night tonight."
"I've never had a chance to ask you much about your life."
"I see. An only child. Your parents must've smothered you."
"If I were your daughter, you'd know it immediately."
"I hope you haven't forgotten our special date."
"Tonight's our anniversary. How could I forget that?"
"You really pulled out all the stops tonight, haven't you?"
"You married a racer, not a dancer."
"I've never actually waltzed before."
"I wish every night could be like this."
"Why, look who's here. It's my little champion."
"My poor baby. It's okay now, we're back."
"You've made me the happiest man in the world."
"Space would be a terrible place for me to die."
"Have you gone mad? We cannot stop half way."
"Stay away from me. For your own protection."
"Forget we were ever friends."
"Let's stick to the official theories, if you don't mind."
"I've wanted to tell you this for a long time, but something always seems to get in the way."
"Of course, if you don't feel the same way, I totally understand."
"You don't have to say anything. I'll just leave these flowers here and wait outside."
"Why did you change?!"

"Why did you put the Professor in the fridge?" Ryan asked curiously while brushing his teeth.
"Why are you opening the fridge while brushing your teeth?" Shane replied from the couch without looking up. He had a headache. -he had been having a headache for a while.
"I'm not sure," Ryan said. He exchanged the toothbrush for the Professor and closed the door before he continued to wander around in the room.
"Also, I did not put him in the fridge," Shane said. He was much too tired to argue.
Ryan smiled at the puppet and the puppet smiled back.
"Divorce Shane and run away with me," Ryan heard the Professor's voice in his head.
Disclaimer: This is just a little joke. More Meme than Fic. It's about the characters Shane Madej and Ryan Bergara and has nothing to do with the real people behind them: Brad Pistachio and Brian Cramblish.

Hi, can i request a zhongli x male reader angst to fluff hanahaki au where male reader was a God a long time ago who died to hanahaki because of zhongli and guizhong, but male reader is resurrected as a mortal and zhongli sees them again
Hey! I'm not completely sure if that is what you meant nonnie, but this idea was stuck in my head for a while now and I just had to write it! It's certainly not one of my best pieces but.. I hope you like it.. 💕
🌸In another life🌸
Pairing: Zhongli x Hanahaki! M! Reader
Warnings: Major Character Death, Angst to Fluff..? I think.. It's really bittersweet.
Notes: u_u ... I can't english
Zhongli turned his head towards the storyteller, who clearly caught his attention with the words that just left his mouth. Although for most people it was unknown, forgotten, Zhongli never forgot a single event in the story he started.
"Once upon a time, there was a young god who loved every creature in Tayvat."
He lowered the cup that he was holding, focusing his attention on the words of the story.
They always started out the same.
"The god that loved every creature in Tayvat, the same god that would offer everything to everyone by his love, lost life."
They always ended the same way.
Zhongli closed his eyes and took a deep breath, remembering the moment he met the young man with a smile on his face.
The man told him that he was visiting Liyue out of sheer curiosity, and that he was coming back to it out of curiosity as well.
"Do you think I could be any kind of a threat to you?" You laughed softly, turning your head towards your friend. Although you were a weak god and you were far from strong, somehow the Geo Archon decided to devote a moment of his attention to you. The moment that sprouted into feeling.
Morax smiled slightly and walked closer to you, gazing out at the sea of clouds.
"Things that are dangerous, not often have to look like a threat."
Just like love.
Love can be beautiful, but won't it turn into poison in the blink of an eye as soon as you lose control of it?
Like flowers, can delight with their amazing charm, when their roots must dig into the very center of the heart, almost breaking it.
"He taught him to understand."
"The young god introduced himself by the name [Y / N]. He befriended Rex Lapis, despite different views and observations." The storyteller continued.
Zhongli looked down at his cup, half full of tea. His mind was full of the thoughts he always chose to leave to himself. He thought that from the mortals, he probably would never hear this name again.
Morax sighed softly, smiling as you pulled his hand along the fields of flowers. He never really understood why you loved them so much, but he could accept that the time you spent with them made you feel relaxed.
"You have some really beautiful plants here, you know?" You laughed as you let go of his hand and ran to one of the trees, immediately sitting under it. The other male calmly approached you and watched as one of the butterflies sat on your finger.
Maybe it was your charm that all creatures loved so much? Until then, he was unable to answer this question. Why did he choose to protect you? Is it because he really thought you were a dear friend to him? Maybe it was because you seemed so vulnerable and weak, just making him feel pity.
You lifted your hand up, showing the creature to your friend. It's wings were golden that gleamed like the light of the setting sun.
"It's so small. but it was not afraid to sit on my finger.. just like I was not afraid to make contact with you, Morax." Glistening pupils looked at you now, taking their attention away from the butterfly. "If you wanted to, I would have been lying underground a long time ago. If you only thought that I was a threat.. ha.."
You laughed softly as you watched the butterfly fly away from your sight.
"You wouldn't hesitate to attack me, would you?"
"He taught him to look up to the future."
Sometimes being weak has its advantages. Not everyone sees you as their enemy, the stronger will usually ignore you, or offer help caused by feelings of pity. Pity over your existence and weakness.
Where do you see this land in a few hundred years, Morax? It was one of your first questions to him that he had to think seriously about. Of course, he cared about Liyue, but admittedly he never thought about what everything would look like in the future.
Will he still dominate these beautiful landscapes? Will he still be able to be called their Archon?
"He taught him to take care."
Zhongli smiled, closing his eyes. He would never have thought it would end this way. True, his life was not over, but the divine era certainly came to an end. People, although weak - will cope.
A soft laugh broke the silence in the room as you ran one hand through the god's hair. This was one of those days where you spent time together, without any worries. You gently braided Morax's hair, smiling to yourself.
"Maybe you should wear this hairstyle more often?" You asked, gently tangling some pieces of flowers into his hair. He just closed his eyes and relaxed in the feeling of your touch. Your hands always seemed extremely delicate. "No? The great god who rules over all Liyue doesn't have time to spend a few minutes making a hairstyle?"
"I didn't say anything." The man sighed and turned to face you. "Why should I worry about a trivial thing like my hair?"
You raised your eyebrows and tilted your head slightly, apparently surprised by his answer.
"Isn't it nicer to look at Liyue when everything is in its place?" You asked, getting up from the ground and placing both of your hands on his shoulders. "If you take care of every smallest element.. eventually these elements will fit together and create perfection.. No matter if it is the perfect weapon.. power.. or hairstyle.."
You were happy watching your friend become attached to more people. At first you enjoyed it, you thought you helped him open up to the world. On your journey together, you met a large number of amazing beings, but suddenly one goddess appeared that seemed to take the person dearest to you away.
"The young god taught him feelings that Rex Lapis did not understand before. He helped him open up to new things, to new people."
Zhongli gritted his teeth as he remembered the rest of the story. Even though you taught him so much, he still understood so little back then.
"[Y / N] had feelings for Morax stronger than to any other being. But it was not his will that made the love strong." The storyteller continued, drawing the attention of more people. "For one-sided love is the strongest. For one-sided love hurts the most."
Goddess of dust, beautiful and gentle, good-hearted and wise. She was a weak god, just like you, maybe that was why Morax had paid more attention to her back then? Maybe he forgot that in fact your strenght was nothing, but his presence near you. He spent every free moment with the goddess. You dreamt that he could give you more attention, but apparently it was not given to you.
You taught him so much and all he offered you was jealousy. Jealousy was eating you from the inside as you saw the goddess slowly pull Morax towards her. It hurt your heart when you had the opportunity to meet a man less and less. But you yourself didn't have the heart to stop it all, because you knew that this goddess meant well for him.
You understood that it was easy to fall in love with someone like him.
"The years passed, the gods drifted apart. The young god was helping Rex Lapis to understand the newer and newer feelings that the goddess had helped him to experience this time."
You understood that you are not the only one who deserves this feeling to be returned.
Zhongli shook his head and opened his eyes, staring at his reflection in the already cold tea. If he knew you thought so.. If he knew he was slowly breaking your heart while spending time with the goddess, it would have all ended differently.
Anyway, it never came out of his mouth that they were 'just friends', it never came out of his mouth that they were something more..
Zhongli clenched his fist, remembering your last moments with him. He remembered your tears, your painful, but smiling face.
"Over time, his feelings did not diminish, but bloomed like the flower buds that he admired so much on his first visit to Liyue. The feeling became unbearable, breaking his heart, hurting him, making him even weaker. The young god then wanted the feeling of love to become something alien to him. "
He remembered you asking him to tell you one of the old stories that he once told you at the beginning of your friendship.
"Why do you suddenly want to hear it? I must say, it's not one of the most interesting ones.."
You laughed quietly, but apart from the laughter, a choked cough escaped your mouth, which you tried to hide with all your might.
"It just.. this story really brings me good memories.. remember? You told it to me when we were sitting under the same tree.. years ago.."
Morax closed his eyes and leaned against the tree, staring up at the sky.
"Well then.."
Zhongli stared at his hands placed on the table in front of him. If he himself lost his life, would he be able to meet you again?
"It was their last meeting. The young god left after him nothing but flowers, which slowly choked him from the inside. Rex Lapis never lost the abilities he had received from his friend. Rex Lapis never forgot, he carried his feelings to the end. One can only hope that after the death of the God of Geo, the two met again."
"Master Zhongli, right?" A soft voice snapped him out of his thoughts, making him look up at the person that called his name. "Can I sit here?"
A joyful smile on the face of a stranger, unusually similar to the smile of a young god who left this world many years ago. The same gaze, that looked at his face with love and affection.
Zhongli nodded slightly, not taking his eyes away from the face of the newly met person.
"I see you here a lot, so I figured I'd introduce myself!" The male laughed, painting a smile on Zhongli's face as he reached towards the consultant. "[Y/N]."
"Maybe in another life, they'll be happy together'."

Every year you swear to yourself that you would spend the New Year’s at home, eating a peaceful dinner by yourself and maybe enjoy a good bottle of wine whilst you spend the whole night watching The Holiday. But just like all the other years you have spent alone since you’ve moved to New York, you end up breaking that same promise, pretty much with the help of your two best friends Emma and Katie.
Now, instead of being curled up in your living room, wearing your favourite knitted sweater and away from all the New Year chaos happening all at once in the very best place to celebrate such a festive occasion, here you are, getting your second glass of vodka tonic as you wait for the goddamn ball to drop.
The local bar has always been crowded especially during this time of the year. You and your friends already made it an annual thing which is probably the reason why despite the yearning you have for the idea of spending it all alone, you couldn’t find enough courage to ditch them and disappear even just for one night.
“Where are the girls?” Gavin, the owner of the bar whom you’ve already befriended due to the amount of times you and the girls spent helping him close up was busily wiping the counter when you sat in your usual seat.
You casually motioned your hand to where you left Emma and Katie, dancing with men they’d most certainly end up kissing once the clock strikes twelve.
“Alone again? You’ve got to blow off some steam, y/n.” He greets you with a concerned look exuding from his virile exterior. You idly shake your head, giving him a tight smile to reassure him that you were doing okay.
“It’s not that big a deal.” is the usual thing you say to people when your being ‘alone’ on the holidays becomes in question. “Besides, I’m a big girl, Gavs.” You proudly announce, leaning against the bar with your palm resting underneath your chin.
“I know you’re a ‘big girl’.” He rolls his eyes before his gaze trails off to your friends and then landing onto a couple of young lads from across the room. “I’m just saying, loosen up. Meet people. It feels nice to have someone holding you close at night so don’t be too hard on yourself.”
A snort bursts from you as soon as you hear the words leave Gavin’s mouth. Who would have known a guy as tough-looking as him would be too much of a softy underneath?
“What?” He holds his guard as he continues making your drink. The liquid swirling around a few ice cubes and a shot of liquor.
“Nothing, nothing. I just– I didn’t think you were one of those people.” You say, clearing your voice once you’ve finally gathered yourself. “You know, the sappy romantics.”
Gavin looks at you, giving you an ‘Oh, please.’ look. “No, ‘cause that’s where you’re wrong.” He protests. “I’ve always been this soft, “sappy romantic” kinda guy. You just choose to see me the way you see me; a typical macho man who hands you good drinks.” He pauses, finishing off with the last touches of your drink. “But you know what? That’s fine. ‘Cause that’s how I know you’re just like me.” He then slides the cold drink towards you.
“What do you mean?” You were intrigued to be fair. You already had your head tilted to the side trying to piece something that could justify what he just said.
“That.” He looks at you, index finger circling before your eyes to make his argument even more compelling. “You act like a strong independent woman, which by the way you still are,– but you have to admit that you do want someone who’s gonna want to spend his New Year’s watching that dumb old movie of yours.” He says with a grin before he pours another customer a shot of tequila.
You were sure you wanted to just shrug it off, but somehow, you can’t help but think of how his words hit you in the subtlest way. Each word bearing an insane amount of possibilities of him being right all along.
But what’d he know anyway? It’s not like he knew you better than anyone else. Maybe it’s just his way with words. Or maybe he’s just that good. After all, that’s basically the reason why he’s running a goddamn bar, right?
𖥸
It wasn’t Mat’s first time spending New Year’s away from his family but if he only had a choice, he’d certainly take the next plane with no question. However, given how the team’s fight for the Cup is going stronger than the last season, he couldn’t bring himself to risk going away and missing out on his usual routines. So, for the past couple of weeks he’d let himself be stuck with Beauvillier throughout the holidays.
Now, for the sake of festivities, the two decided it’d be best to come out to the city and have fun welcoming the New Year along with some good friends that were surprisingly available at the last minute. That being said, the local bar was already the third one they’ve gone to having started the drinking binge earlier than intended.
“Happy New Fucking Year, Motherfuckers!” The loudest and perhaps, the drunkest man cheered at the center of the dance floor, holding up his drink carelessly as he danced to the mind numbing EDM coming off from the DJ’s booth.
“Way to get wasted. Am I right?” Dan says as he stands to gather everyone and clink their beer mugs for the nth time.
“Somebody’s definitely gonna miss the ball drop.” Tito snides, referring to the drunken man cheering tirelessly. Mat shakes his head and idly laughs. Their glasses meet halfway, causing some of the beer to spill over the table. The loud music and cheers echoed in Mathew’s ears, finding the whole scene a little too overwhelming despite how he liked to loosen up with bottomless drinks coming his way.
Somehow, he was thankful that he needed a second to breathe which only meant having to take his eyes off of the same guys he hangs with on and off the ice. Because if he didn’t, he wouldn’t have been able to see someone so beautiful yet seemingly out of place when his gaze landed onto that one girl sitting by the bar all by herself at what seems to be the loudest pub in the city.
“God, she’s pretty.” The words unknowingly slip off his tongue, making him realize he’s announced his thoughts out for the group just enough to make their brows quirk at the now out-of-reach Mathew.
“What?” Anthony leans closer to him so as to give himself a view of what Mat had his eyes peeled for.
“That girl by the bar, she’s— she’s really pretty.” Mathew says, completely sure that he has never said anything true in his life. Much to his surprise, the boys gathered around and turned their heads towards the girl sitting by the bar.
“So? Go and talk to her, man.” Anthony casually proposes with a nudge, urging him to go after her.
Mathew immediately lets out a foolish scoff and chooses to gulp a large amount of liquor from his mug.
“Yeah, just go for it. What’s the worst thing that could happen?” Tyson chides, looking at the girl who has utterly made their night a little more interesting. That being said, being stuck with the three biggest blokes wasn’t that too interesting to begin with.
“Oh, worst thing? She could hear me!” Mat runs a hand through his hair, incapable of taking his eyes off of her even just for a second.
“You know if you don’t, I will.” Tyson puts his beer down and acts as if to make the move Mathew was too hesitant to do himself in order to boost his mate.
“Fuck off. Fine. Hold my beer.” Mat rolls his eyes and shoves Tyson his mug before gathering himself by straightening creases off his suit along with a few sharp breaths to ease out the nervousness he’d been feeling.
You watch the teeny tiny leaf of mint swirl around the whirl of liquor you’ve successfully made, ignoring all the background noise, still evidently fixated on the words Gavin has left you with earlier. Has it really been that long since you allowed yourself to be fully vulnerable around someone?
A sad smile escapes your lips, one that made the man that was now towering all over you wonder what could have possibly caused such melancholy on the most beautiful girl he has seen all throughout the city. That’s a rather heavy way to put it but that doesn't mean he was lying. He did find you really pretty. Maybe even a little too much and too out of his league.
A tap on your shoulder pulls you from your thoughts.
“Hi.” He says, gray eyes illuminated by the strobe lights hitting your direction. You give him a tight smile, acknowledging his presence and frankly even the boldness he had to strike up a conversation.
“I just wanted to ask if what you’re drinking is any good.” Mat subconsciously reprimands himself for coming up with what is yet to be the lamest thing he’s ever told a girl.
Great. Now, you’re asking her if a vodka tonic is good? As if it could get any better? He thinks to himself. So, to compensate and reduce further damage, he plays it off by laughing quite sheepishly as he absent-mindedly massages his nape.
Noticing what the man was doing, you let out a shy laugh too, biting your lower lip as you find his foolish attempt of hitting on you quite adorable.
“Wow. You’re really good at this.” You tease, now giving away a playful smile, poking at his middle school pick up line.
Mathew chuckles. His doe eyes shy and alienated by the confidence he certainly knew he had not until a few seconds ago when he met yours. “I swear I’m better than this.” He tries again, this time earning himself a soft giggle from you.
Atta boy, Mat.
“I’m Mat by the way. Mathew Barzal.”
He reaches out his hand which you gladly took. It was calloused and rough around the edges whilst Mat found yours completely fitting in his. Your eyes meet halfway as you both shook each other’s hands. Fingers lingering quite longer than it should be.
“Y/N. Y/N Y/L/N.”
“So, you’re telling me you haven’t had a tonic before?” You ask him, hands now all to yourselves. Mat leans against the bar, his elbow resting on the counter, unable to suppress the embarrassment now dawning on him upon remembering his little set back.
“I’m sort of a vodka tonic connoisseur.” He kids in an attempt to redeem himself. “Come on, it wasn’t that bad.”
You look at him, shaking your head at how unbelievably gorgeous this man is. “Fine. It wasn’t. I’ll give you that.”
“So,” He takes a deep breath before taking one of the empty seats beside you. “I– I can’t help but wonder, I mean– if it’s not too forward of me, how come you’re drinking alone on New Year’s?”
You take a sip off of your drink and faintly shake your head, dismissing his query. “Hmm. Actually, no.”
Mathew muttered an “oh.” at the thought of hearing what he thinks you’re about to say next. To his surprise, and frankly feeling as if a weight had been lifted off his chest, you motion towards your best girls, Emma and Katie who were now obviously way too fond of the guys they just met.
“See those girls?”
Mathew nods, the answer to his question now becoming much clearer and put together. An answer that absolutely went along with his cards well.
“Those are two of the most important persons in my life going at it at a New Year’s Eve Party.”
“Would it be wrong to ask why aren’t you ‘going at it’ like how they’re doing it now?”
Is he always this formal? You think, lips curving to a grin.
“What?” He asks when he sees the expression (he can’t quite put a finger on) on your face.
“Nah. I’m all good. I mean, not that I don’t want to. I just–” You pause. Unsure of whether telling him the truth would do your case any better. What’s there to lose anyway? He’s just some guy you’re bound to meet at the bar. It’s not like you didn’t anticipate a scenario like this from happening, right?
“Just take me as someone who isn’t really fond of big parties,” he then cuts you off and finishes your sentence, “But still go anyways.”
“Exactly.”
Gavin pops in for a bit, handing Mathew a bottle of beer he was certain of not ordering. He looks at him puzzled. A silent question that Gavin answered with a wink before getting back to tending to his alcohol induced customers.
Apparently, it’s on the house.
“How come you’re here chatting with me when your friends are all the way there?” You motion towards a curly haired man and the other boys across the room. One was even smiling at you but you just opted on giving him a nod before turning your head back towards Mathew.
“Well, I didn’t like the idea of having you celebrate the New Year’s alone.” He honestly says. But since you were the kind of person who wasn’t the best at taking any type of compliment nor flirty exchanges like a normal person would, you roll your eyes and be the blunt person you were always known for. “Oh. I thought you saw a girl sitting alone at the bar and saw that as an opening.”
To be fair, Mat wasn’t really intimidated by your remark. In fact, he actually liked how straight forward you were with him. You didn’t look at him the way he’s gotten used to whenever he comes up and introduces himself to other girls; something that only made him more interested in you. He can’t help but want to know what exactly is going on in your mind. Not the creepy kind, of course. Just the one where he’d rather spend the New Year’s getting to know a total stranger than getting insanely pissed with the same men he’s spent most of his days with.
“That too.” He admits, taking a sip off his beer without breaking his eyes off you.
There was a sheer silence for a moment. The kind that Mat knew was much deafening than the booming sound of the usual dreadful New Year’s Eve Party. “So tell me,” Mat regains himself, catching your attention once again. “What would you rather be doing tonight? You know, if you hadn’t had to come out here.”
He watches your lips quirk thinking about what it was that you actually wanted to do tonight. Then again, you only had one thing in mind.
“I kinda wanted to spend it alone for the past three years.”
“That long? How come?”
“Well, you know, for some peace and quiet. Maybe watch a movie or two.”
Like what he has been doing since the moment he’d gone to talk to you, he watches you run your fingers around the rim of your cold drink. Evidently immersed in your own thoughts from trying to piece out the real reason behind your grave wanting to spend the occasion alone.
Turning the tables, you ask the same question back, “What about you? I mean, other than getting shit faced, what would you rather be doing?”
Mathew takes a deep breath trying to suppress the longing he’s felt for the past few weeks. He just misses his family so much that he couldn’t help but wonder how they’re doing even if he’s constantly kept in touch with them hours before he’d gone out with the boys.
“I’ll be with my folks. You know, all that usual family stuff.” He answers you shortly.
You didn’t think much of what he’s told you so you just tell him the very thing that crossed your mind. “You know, it’s amazing how two people who didn’t even want to be here find each other just so they could bitch about not wanting to be here a little bit more.”
The two of you share a good laugh, utterly and undeniably enjoying each other’s company. It didn’t feel weird having to talk to a total stranger, let alone let them have bits and pieces of yourself that only enables them to put together an image of you that isn’t even as close to who you really are. Regardless of that notion, there was something about how Mathew connected with you, and how you connected with him.
It was far from being the movie type of thing, but you have to admit, the remainder of the time you two have spent talking over a half empty bottle of beer and a glass of vodka tonic has definitely made the two of you feel this unexplainable wanting of having to learn more about each other. That being said, when all drinks were drunk till its last drop, Mathew couldn’t help himself from wanting to spend a bit more time with you. Maybe, even the whole night if you’d only let him.
“D’you want to get out of here?” He shoots his shot as quickly as he could, afraid that losing even just a second would mean losing a night of spontaneity with you.
You have long waited for a reason to miss the annual party. And if that meant having to wait three years just so you could stumble upon a tall and fairly handsome man that was going to save you from a dreadful evening, nothing would’ve felt as right as this if it weren’t for the push Mat had stored in his piercing eyes and mischievous grin.
You didn’t have to give it much thought. After spending a whole hour exchanging little trivias of yourselves, Mat finally had it easy in making a riveting case. You sigh in defeat as you fish out a few cash from your purse and slide it into your tab.
Excitement now exuding from Mathew, he bobs his brows up and down whilst he watches you roll your eyes once again for the hundredth time tonight. “I’m gonna hate you for this.” You tell him as you get off the bar stool.
Mat hurriedly signals Tito for his coat to which he was able to catch the moment he had tossed it towards his way. He then gets yours that was placed on the back of your seat before finally following you out towards the door.
“I highly doubt that.”
𖥸
Mathew draped your coat over your shoulders, helping you to slip into it. You politely say your thanks and hold your purse close, your gloves gripping onto the leather as the two of you stroll the streets of New York, the winter breeze brushing on your cheeks with every stride you make.
“So,” You begin, putting both of your hands inside your coat pockets. “Where are you taking me, Mat?”
He tries to think for a second. The thought of not having a concrete plan for the night finally dawns on him. He clicks his tongue and breathes in the familiar scent of the city. Mathew looks around the block and spots the good old food truck he and the boys once tried when they were out for an away game with the Rangers.
“How about New York’s finest burrito?” He points to where the truck was parked, clueless to how his sudden movement placed him inches closer to you. You didn’t notice it until you looked at him for his eyes were still pinned to where the truck was at.
Mat’s eyes were pretty. That’s a known fact. But what you didn’t realize was how astonishing they are not until you got this close. You took in the sight sitting before you as fast as you could while he was still preoccupied like a five-year-old kid seeing an ice-cream truck pass by the neighborhood. Your eyes linger from his well structured brows, his unbelievably long lashes, down to the tip of his nose and his rosy cheeks before finally settling down to his cherry plump lips. All of which were more than enough to send butterflies in your stomach.
“O-Okay.” You agree. Mathew takes you by the hand before you can even say a word. Thank the gods for letting you live in a city that seems to never stop the hustle to still have open food trucks good for a quick bite at this time of the night close into New Year’s.
“Hey, bud. Two sixes to go, please.” Mathew says politely once he knocks on the window.
“You’ve got to try this, I swear.” He looks back at you with the same warm smile beaming on his face.
“Unless you want a proper meal? I mean, there’s a diner down the–” You immediately cut him off and take out your purse, offering to pay for it instead. “No! It’s fine, really. I’m a bit hungry myself.”
After spending the whole time waiting for the wrapped snack, arguing on who would be paying, you let Mathew have this one for now even if you didn’t like others paying for what you can pay yourself.
You take a good look at your watch and see that you only have about an hour left till midnight. An idea pops in your head, making you gasp at the thought. Mathew looks at you with a half-eaten burrito in his hand, his brows all furrowed as if to ask a piece of your mind.
“Come on, I know where we should go.”
𖥸
Mathew never thought he’d found himself standing on a rooftop of a random building overlooking the Empire State during one of the coldest times in the city. The things that has only kept him sane was the girl who was still holding his hand, the city lights that have always left him in awe, and of course, the well heated rooftop.
There have been a few exchanges that are quite notable over the time you’ve spent with Mathew. He’s told you about the usual night outs he and the boys have for leisure, the family he had back in Coquitlam, how much he misses his mom and his sister, and how much love he has for hockey that he ended up doing the thing he loved most for a career.
Him, on the one hand, pretty much learned the same stuff about you. Well, almost, for he has yet to ask you the one thing that has been bugging him off all night.
You were telling him how this was your safe haven in the city and how much you loved going here every time you felt like needing to take a deep breath and step back from the world when he asked you a simple question. One that’s absolutely left you surprised (and a little bit impressed) that he still even remembered it at this point.
“What’s the movie about? You know, the one you’ve been wanting to see tonight.” He asks, both of his hands inside his pockets to keep warm.
The two of you sat on the bench facing thousands of lights illuminating the whole city. You look at him for a second, biting your lip as you contest with yourself, the thought of Mat being the kind of douché that would shit around women and their romantic comedy films comes rushing to you like a cold December breeze.
“Alright, why do you want to know?” You pass the ball back to his court. To which Mat shortly answers with a level-headed sigh. “I kinda get the feeling it has something to do with the three-year thing.”
“You’re nosy.” You kiddingly say, earning a chuckle from him.
“You’ve spent the whole night walking with me and I can barely even feel my legs anymore, y/n. Trust me, between you and me, you know you’re the nosy one.” The two of you share a small laugh, your voices are the only sound that can be heard besides the sleepless city acting as a white noise to you and Mathew’s little bubble.
“Fine. And you’re a fucking athlete, so don’t even start.”
You playfully give him a nudge on the shoulder when he starts mimicking what you say. Mat stops immediately and looks at you with the same doe eyes glinting under the security lights that the rooftop had. He then patiently waits for you to gather your thoughts, breathing in all of New York as he lets himself drown in your presence.
You didn’t know how but there was this unspeakable comfort you feel around Mat. Sure, he was just a total stranger you’ve met a few hours ago, but no one, not even the guy who dumped you after your five-date rule, was able to connect with you at the same level as Mathew did.
“It’s not that I want to see it so bad. I’ve watched it for like– a reasonable amount before it became my comfort movie. Plus, it’s literally called The Holiday. Why wouldn’t you want to see it during the holiday?”
You tell him a bit more of how you’ve come into liking it, stalling him from the real reason why you wanted to celebrate the New Year’s alone. But you know, that even after all the circles you’re willing to go through just to keep Mat at bay, you’re bound to lose all your strings and resort to telling him in the end. You just hope you wouldn’t be making the same mistake you’ve made three years ago.
You told Mathew about your on and off childhood sweetheart Claude who has always kept you high and dry throughout the years of being together. (That is if you were in fact together.) He was the constant reminder that you will never be the kind of person someone would want to stick around with.
You and him go a long way. You both ended up going to the same university because he just had to have you around and that he couldn’t afford not being with you even just for a second. He said that he couldn’t take the thought of having to see you only on the holidays so as the dumb kid you once were, your feet followed his everywhere he’d gone.
That cycle went on and on until you finally had the courage to leave everything behind and move to New York. Months as a new kid in the city, you were scared, of course. You spent your days hanging around your apartment, doing all sorts of crap you can even think of just so you wouldn’t have to leave your flat. Although, meeting Emma and Katie was the biggest push you needed to finally let yourself let loose. Long story short, at the first New Year’s Eve Party you’ve ever gone to after moving in the city, the person you least expected to see was the very first one to come out of Gavin's bar. Claude.
Just like what a normal person would do, the two of you sat down and caught up. Pretty much the same thing you’ve gone with Mathew. Although only a lot less chit chat and a lot more kissing.
Claude told you his real intentions. He said that he wanted to start something with you for real. Of course, you had let him but you have made the biggest mistake of telling him about your five-date rule.
Lo and behold, Claude did stick around for the fifth date. That being said, he had stayed only for the fifth date. You saw him sneaking out of your flat so early in the morning, leaving you nothing but a voicemail that said his foolish reasons and insincere apologies. Since then, after a lot of major hook ups here and there, you’ve never let yourself become as vulnerable and stupid as you once were with the biggest douche you’ve ever met.
“It’s crazy, I know. You can laugh about it.” You say when Mat hasn’t spoken for a few seconds.
He takes a glance at you, a tight smile on his face. “I don’t think it’s crazy. That man is crazy. And also, a big prick. Classic dick move.” He tells you before he turns his eyes back to the city.
“Well, yeah. That’s me. That’s the holiday story.”
“A crappy one, of course.” You add.
Mat shakes his head no. He didn’t know why exactly but all he wanted to do at that moment, a few seconds before New Year’s, was to give you something,– even just a memory you could look back on. That that story isn’t going to be the one you’d be remembering for the next holidays. He wanted his to be something that’ll make your three-year-old crappy story long gone and forgotten. That his version would be the one that’s stuck.
“Definitely not this one.”
As the clock strikes twelve, cheers erupted throughout New York along with fireworks shooting into the city’s midnight sky. The first thing you see upon looking back were the same kind eyes of the man whom you have randomly met at the party you dreaded most. Only this time, drowning you little by little as it becomes iridescent under the thousands of lights covering New York City.
You were frozen to your seat as Mat’s face inch closer to yours. You feel his breath against your cold skin as if it was lulling you to sleep. His hands find its way to your face, cupping both of your cheeks rather gently as he finally paints a new memory you’d be carrying for the rest of your holidays.
“Happy New Year.” He greets you, almost like a faint whisper whilst the two of you gasp for breath. You blink a few times just to process what had just happened and digest how unbelievably good that kiss was.
Mathew’s hands were still on your cheeks. You held them close so he’d know you weren’t ready to let go. You take a deep breath, gathering enough courage to ask him an unusual way of greeting someone a Happy New Year.
“Will you walk me to my car?”
𖥸
You have both of your hands tucked inside your coat pockets as you walked the street leading to where you left your car. Mat was just telling you about the game happening next Thursday against the Bruins and how it would mean a lot to him if you’d come and see him play.
“To be fair, the Bruins are good.” You commented, a playful smirk plastered on your face rather teasingly.
Mathew lets out a snort as he rolls his eyes, chuckling at the thought of you dissing on his team the moment you had the chance. “Hey, both teams are good.”
“It’s just the matter of who’s better.” You finish his sentence, yet again working your way with a clever remark. Mat hums, not necessarily agreeing with your sentiment.
“So will you come?” He asks again just so he could hear you say yes. You take a deep breath, not letting yourself think too much of the said invitation. If you’re going, you’re going as a friend. Actually, you weren’t even sure if you could even call yourself such a label.
You nod your head yes to which had become the reason of Mathew’s glee. The two of you walked side by side in peace, basking in the comfort of each other’s presence.
Once the rush of excitement about you coming to one of his games starts to wear down, Mathew begins to feel the weight of walking befall on him as it grows quicker with each step he takes. With his brows meeting halfway, he looks at you, eyes evident with confusion.
“Where did you park your car exactly? I feel like we’re walking straight to Long Island.” He chortles, scratching his temple quite adorably.
You bit your lower lip as you looked up at him. Mathew’s physique towering over yours. “I uh– I took a cab to the party. My car’s actually parked outside my apartment.” You admit with a shy laugh.
Mat’s mouth went agape upon hearing you confess; awkward silence envelops the two of you with every second spent not talking to one another. Not long after, he decides to break the ice, undeniably impressed at how he’d never seen it coming.
Clever. He thinks, incapable of stopping his gut from swirling. His smile widens when he sees you looking at him; unfazed and perhaps, enamoured.
𖥸
Mat did walk you to your car. The two of you exchange your thank you’s; utterly grateful for what has to be the best New Year’s you had in years.
You wanted to ask him for one last cup of coffee because the last thing you wanted him to do was leave. But after all the things you’ve gone through with the man within such a short amount of time (and frankly, even a tedious walk) you still failed to muster enough courage to stop him from doing so.
Once you see him get in the lone cab that miraculously passed by your neighborhood at such an ungodly hour, you close the door behind and head straight to your flat.
You get home to the sight of your weighted blanket spread over your couch along with a couple of pillows that seems to be the best place to bury yourself in after a tiresome night out. Things were just as they were left hours ago; prepped for a much awaited movie night. As planned, you quickly get out of your winter clothes, head for a quick shower, before finally slipping into some comfortable nightwear.
You were just finishing up putting the bowl of popcorn and a bottle of Chardonnay on top of the coffee table when a buzz coming from the intercom catches your attention.
Once your hands were free, you quickly made your way towards the box, a bit irked at the thought of Katie and Emma ruining your long-overdue New Year agenda upon remembering how she’d told you to let her in the building just in case Katie gets a little too overboard.
“Emma, I’m about to watch Jude Fucking Law. Just come up!” You hurriedly say, turning your head back to the screen which already had the movie on pause.
However, instead of Katie’s whiny and drunken voice, what you heard was the same familiar chuckle that had been cruising your mind all night.
“You know, I don’t think I mentioned that I haven’t watched The Holiday. Is Jude Fucking Law any good?” He asks. A mental image of how his eyes crinkle when he laughs comes to mind upon hearing his voice.
Once again, pretty much like how you’ve spent the whole evening with Mathew, a wide smile lets loose as you press the black button. “Come on up.”

Angel on Fire
Warnings: Language, Murder, Little Fluff, Smidge of Smut
Words: 4.2k
Pairing: Steve Rogers x Fem!Reader, Bucky Barnes x Fem!Reader
Summary: You literally fell for Bucky Barnes in 1944, Steve was there when it happened. How is it possible that you’re sitting across from him now in 2012 looking exactly the same?
Song: Angel on Fire by Halsey
A/N: Please do not hold me accountable for any of this lore.
I’m standing in the ashes of who I used to be.
1944
It was a celebration.
A small gathering to acknowledge everything The Howling Commando’s had accomplished thus far in sabotaging Hydra’s operations. There was only one reason you were here – him. Steve Rogers, America’s golden boy. You had to admit the newspaper clippings did not do him justice. He looked so young and innocent in his service uniform that night.
Guilt. It echoed through the very depths of your soul.
You had traveled this far though, so you finished your glass of wine, a little liquid courage, and ran your hands along the front of the emerald green chiffon material of your dress to smooth it out. You inhaled deeply, trying to calm your nerves before you left the bar and waltzed across the room towards him with sheer confidence. The moment he saw you, his blue eyes widened, and he shifted on his feet. Chest out. Shoulders back. You kept your eyes on him, the corner of your lips turning up in a smirk at how utterly distracted he was by you – it was adorable.
An unseen force slammed into your shoulder, knocked you off balance, and strange hands grabbed at your waist and arm as you fell. The man had managed to catch you in time and pulled you back to your feet. His hand slipped from your waist to lower back as he steadied you against his strong frame.
“Dammit Dugan,” the man who was pushed into you hissed as you instinctively clutched his arm for support.
“Oh shit,” a large, burly man in a bowler hat and red moustache gave you a look of embarrassment as he tipped his hat. “Sorry ma’am.”
“Sorry about that,” the stranger’s hand was still on your lower back and heat radiated from his palm. Your skin prickled where his fingers gripped you ever so slightly through the dress, his hand felt as if it encompassed you wholly. For a moment you were terrified the fire that pulsed through your veins might consume you both. Dark hair and eyes that were blue as the ocean only emphasized the boyish grin on his face. “They’re idiots.”
This feeling was unlike anything you’d ever felt before. Lust? Love? One thing was certain, for the first time in a long time you felt safe. You smiled at him because his charm was infectious, “It’s okay.”
“I’m James,” he offered his hand as an introduction and you took it carefully. “My friend’s call me Bucky.”
You had given him your name and as he brushed his lips across your knuckles you knew things would never be the same. Sergeant James Barnes stole your heart that night and saved you from yourself without knowing. He wasn’t who you had come for, but sometimes fate has other plans.
The two of you fell in love hard and fast. The kind of love that absorbs two people so fully that nothing else exists in the entire world except each other. He was your first real love – first real mistake – being in love with Bucky had meant bringing his best friend into your life.
The photo Bucky had carried with him of he and Steve showed the person Rogers was before the war, the shield, the serum – a rail-thin kid from Brooklyn. Bucky had told you stories about having to save him from fights he’d get into and how awkward he was with girls. He’d also tell you how proud he was that Steve had volunteered for that experiment. Bucky wanted you like Steve, because that was important to him – Steve was important to him.
You tried not to like Steve Rogers, you really had. After all, you knew where that road would lead. There was no escaping it though, because Bucky was a brother to him. They were a packaged deal. You didn’t get one without the other. So, Steve had befriended you, against your better judgement.
“Watch out for each other,” you told them.
“Always,” Bucky placed a chaste kiss against your lips before he turned to join Dugan and Morita.
“Will do,” Steve gave a small smile, warm and assuring.
They were just young men – boys – fighting the monsters of the world. Not exactly the same types of monsters you were accustomed to, but monsters nonetheless.
One year felt like forever.
In the middle of a war, you had snuck around to places to you shouldn’t have been, just to spend a few moments with the guy you loved and the one you shouldn’t have met.
It was amazing.
Until it wasn’t.
People die. It’s the curse of being human. That’s one reason you’d never let your guard down before. Bucky Barnes had been worth the momentary lapse in judgement though, Steve too, even though you hated to admit it – he was a good friend.
When you lost them both, you had been devastated, but in your life, you knew you would outlive people.
Lose those you love.
That didn’t make it any easier.
However, with Steve Rogers gone you had nothing left to lose – literally.
2012
You had seen the news – The Avengers had saved New York.
At first you thought it was someone imitating him, just a cheap knock off behind the mask. So, you had come to see for yourself, after all, it’s been over sixty years.
They said he was frozen in the ice.
What is your excuse going to be?
You watch as he sits across the patio from you, a half dozen empty tables between you, sketching away in his notebook. Steve used to do the same thing, all those years ago, always drawing in his spare time. Against your better judgement, you pull your sunglasses lower on your nose, peering over the rim of them to get a better look.
It’s him – it’s really him.
The same golden boy you remember, he’s not aged at all. Your mind is racing and for a moment you just stare at him as a flood of memories wash over you. Your heart stops as his eyes flick up from his drawing and immediately focus on you.
He recognizes you instantly. You’re still as beautiful as the last time he saw you, but that was over sixty years ago. Steve blinks, afraid his eyes are deceiving him. His mind is telling him there’s no way it’s you, but his heart is reminding him that in a world full of aliens and gods – maybe – just maybe the universe could give him this.
A piece of home.
He’s been stumbling through a world that’s not his own. Everything has changed. At least when he puts on the suit, he has a job to do, responsibilities as Captain America.
He’s a hero.
A damn national treasure.
Take away the red, white, and blue, and he’s just Steve Rogers, a man who doesn’t belong here.
This isn’t his time – it isn’t either of your time.
Why are you both here?
The recognition is evident on his features and you quickly push your sunglasses back up on your face as you carefully stand, trying not to draw attention to yourself. It’s too late though, because he’s on his feet, notepad forgotten on the table.
He’s halfway across the patio as you head for the sidewalk, calling out behind you, “Hey.” You don’t stop, but he’s persistent as he chases after you. “Excuse me, miss?”
You pick up the pace, but he doesn’t relent. Images of your smiling face flash through his mind. Bucky’s arms wrapped tightly around your waist, his chin on your shoulder, the wide smile on his face crinkled the corners of his eyes. He had been happy for his friend, even if there was a tinge of jealousy there. Steve had saw you first that night, but after everything Hydra had done to Bucky – he was the one who needed you.
Rogers has to jog to catch up with you and gently places his hand on your shoulder to stop your escape. For a moment you forget to breath, his touch familiar – yet foreign. You close your eyes as he circles around to get a better look at you. An almost silent whisper falling from his lips, “It is you.” You look up at him slowly, staring into his curious blue eyes as he continues, “How – how are you here?”
“I could ask you the same thing,” you remark.
“Long story.”
“Mine’s longer.”
***
Steve tells you about everything, the fight with Schmidt, the tesseract, and crashing the Valkyrie, then about Loki and the battle of New York. You can see a happiness in his eyes when he looks at you, as if no time has passed.
It has though and so much has changed.
“How?” his brows furrow. “How are you here?”
You don’t want him to know the whole truth – not yet. You’ve lost a lot since he’s been away and having him here brings back feelings you’d long since forgotten.
You didn’t think it was possible anymore.
“It’s complicated,” you say before taking a sip of your coffee.
Steve knows you’re holding something back and his hand finds yours on the small patio table between you and he gives it a gentle squeeze, “Tell me.”
He had developed this uncanny ability to ready you like a book during that time together in the war.
Maybe it was from being a third wheel in your relationship with Bucky.
Maybe it was something else.
It had been wrong, and you knew it, but fate be damned. There had been something very pure about Steve Rogers – innocent. In a world full of monsters and demons, he was good and kind, and oblivious to it all.
“I can’t die,” you say simply as if that sums up everything he needs to know, “technically.” He stares at you for a moment, waiting for you to elaborate, but you take another sip of your coffee instead.
Steve raises his eyebrows after a few moments of silence, “I’m going to need more than that.”
“I’m not human,” you finally say, your fingernail anxiously scraping at the chipped paint on the table. “I’m what they call a Phoenix.”
His blue eyes are inquisitive, and you can see the flurry of questions waiting there, “Like the mythical bird?” You nod and he continues with boy like curiosity, “Do you breathe fire?”
“No,” you shake your head with a smirk and hold your hand up, wiggling your fingers. “That comes from these.”
He gives a slow nod as he contemplates another question, “Can you fly?” You give him another shake of your head and he takes a deep breath as he leans back in his chair. “Okay.”
“Okay?” it’s your turn to look surprised. “I just told you I’m not human and you’re just going to roll with it?”
“I fought aliens two months ago,” he gives you a half-smile, “alongside an Asgardian. Weird isn’t so weird anymore.”
Truth be told, as long as you aren’t Loki, he could care less what you are. You’re here. That’s all that matters. Seeing your face brings back the good memories of the war, those small moments in time, which he’d forgotten about.
“You know what we should do,” Steve says suddenly, as a thought crosses his mind. “Let’s go see a movie.” Your brows furrow together in confusion at him, the large smile on his face making him look like a teenager. “Remember? Me, you, and Buck, we used to talk about when the war was over and we got back home, we were going to spend all day at the theater just watching whatever was playing. Eating popcorn.”
“With butter,” you do remember those discussions.
“Loads of butter,” his eyes widen with excitement. “What do you say?”
You just got him back, you’re not ready to let him go just yet, even though you know you should. It’s selfish, and you know that, but you agree, “Deal.”
The two of you spend the rest of the day watching movies and binging on theater popcorn and snacks while reminiscing about the past and how much things have changed. When Steve talks about how everything is different now, you can see a glimpse of that rail-thin kid Bucky had always protected.
You know what it feels like to be lost, and even though you had told yourself you wouldn’t stay – you can’t leave him like this.
He was Bucky’s best friend – your friend.
2013
Just a few months, until he’s more adjusted.
That was the phrase you had started telling yourself in the beginning. Steve had no one and you couldn’t leave him. He needed you and the fact your friendship was able to pick up right where the two of you had left it in 1945 made it easy to stay.
But you shouldn’t be here.
You know it.
Yet, here you are, assisting Captain America and the Avengers in taking down another Hydra facility, this time in D.C. of all places. The fighting, the violence, it’s too much. Fueling the flame inside of you, making you irrational sometimes, but you can’t tell him that. Then you would have to explain everything, and you can’t do that either.
The mission is going according to plan until two Hydra agents get the drop on Barton and you’re the only one to see it. You react without thinking and your right arm juts out towards the two agents, hand igniting in a beautiful combination of red and orange flares. The action immediately causing the two men to burst into flames. Their screams of agony are short-lived as your manipulate the blaze with your hand. It only takes a few moments until nothing is left of the men but a pile of ashes.
Clint raises an eyebrow in concern because you’ve never used your powers like that, then gives you small nod of appreciation for saving his life.
“What the hell was that?” Steve says from behind you, ignoring Tony’s ‘Language Cap’ over the comms.
“Sorry,” your tone almost flippant.
“We’ve talked about that,” he reprimands you, making you feel like a child, which only pisses you off. “Incapacitate only. Killing is a last resort. We don’t do that.”
“You don’t kill people,” the cold look in your eyes is one he’s seen before.
“Neither do you,” Steve voice is still firm, calmer.
Shaking your head, you glare at him, “You don’t fucking know me. There’s a whole world of bad out there Steve. It can’t all be contained. Some of it has to be killed.”
You know you’ve said too much and you storm off. You’re going to have to tell him, but you’re too angry at him right now. You died too many times during the sixty years Steve was frozen in the ice. It’s taken a toll and you know he’s seen it, his blue eyes filling with concern and uncertainty at some of your actions. You aren’t the same carefree soul you were when he and Bucky met you, in fact, you know there’s not much of your soul left at this point.
That was part of being a Phoenix.
You and Steve have talked some on the subject of Phoenixes. He knows you’re a rare species who can control fire with your hands, although he’s not a fan of that. You haven’t mentioned the issue with your soul though, or how he plays a part in your story. There’s no easy way to tell him and you know it will be easier to leave – disappear.
Steve approaches the quinjet seeing everyone on the team except you and glances to Tony his eyes questioning your whereabouts without him saying anything.
“Hey Firestarter,” Tony says over the comms, even though you hate that nickname. “You still inside?”
“Yea,” you respond.
No one expects the explosion that originates from somewhere inside the warehouse and rocks the quinjet, but Steve’s eyes go wide in horror. Tony has to grab him to stop him from running into the flames. Metal arms cling to him tightly, as his world goes up in bright orange and red waves.
You told Steve you couldn’t die – technically. He never asked what technically meant because he was afraid to.
He searches the warehouse himself after the firetrucks leave. Tony and Natasha help, but there’s nothing left.
This is technically.
Later that night, you wake up in the rubble of the warehouse – naked and cold.
You know you’ve stayed too long. You can barely feel any of yourself left inside and it scares you. Feeling completely empty, void of any emotion or empathy. That is a fate worse than death.
It’s time to let him go. He’ll be okay without you. He has Tony and Romanoff now. You should leave while you can, but Steve Rogers is the only friend you’ve ever really had – which in itself is a cruel fucking joke.
***
You rap your knuckles against the wooden door in a rhythmic beat. The hem of the oversized bright yellow t-shirt you’d stolen from the construction worker’s truck brushes against the middle of your thighs, and it reminds you just how numb your body feels from the cold. It had been a long walk from the warehouse to here.
Steve opens the door to the apartment, red-rimmed eyes staring at you in shock. Your face has smudges of ash, sprinkles of it are in your hair, and you smell like the thick smoke of a campfire.
“Have you been crying?” Your tone edging on derisive as you enter the apartment.
“I thought you died,” he replies slowly, before closing the door hard behind you.
“And?” You can’t help the cockiness in your voice, chalk it up to being almost soulless, and you turn to him. “I told you, I couldn’t –”
His mouth is on yours, shutting you up as he pushes you back against the wall. One hand grips your waist firmly while the other tangles in the hair at the nape of your neck. Your mind races because this isn’t supposed to happen – it can’t. You shouldn’t be here.
The muscles in his shoulders flex under your fingers as he tightens his hold on you, pinning you to the wall with his body. Steve’s kiss is punishing and as his tongue slides past your lips, your body arches into him instinctively, overriding your thoughts. His assertiveness makes you forget the reason behind your visit, the warm, wet sensation between your thighs quickly becoming your new motivation.
He presses his forehead against yours as he breaks the kiss for a moment, whispering against your lips, “I thought I lost you.” He has never looked at you like this before, with such longing and desire, and you feel it.
Really feel it.
The small part of you that is left is suddenly overcome with a surge of emotions and feelings.
Joy. Fear. Sympathy. Confusion. Love. All colliding together, twisting and spiraling inside of you like a whirlwind. Making you question yourself, ‘When did I fall in love with him?’
This need you’re feeling.
This ache.
You’ve forgotten what tears feel like as they prick the corners of your eyes and you cup his face gently with your hands, staring up at him. Your golden boy, “I’m here – I’m right here, Steve.”
It would be easier if he fucked you. Cold and hard against the wall of his apartment or with reckless desperation in the shower as water streams around the two of you, but he doesn’t. Steve Rogers makes love to you that night. Forcing you to melt as rough hands trace every curve and line of your body with feather like strokes and tender touches. His mouth both insatiable and intimate with kisses, expressing his feelings for you without words.
It’s raw, intense, and passionate.
You shouldn’t have come back, it’s not fair to him.
But you’re thankful you did.
Because you’ve never felt more alive – the irony of that is not lost on you.
***
The next morning you’re sitting at the kitchen table when Steve comes out of the bedroom and he can immediately see the look on your face. He notices the duffel bag by the door, and it makes his heart stop.
“We need to talk,” you say ominously, and the man slowly moves to sit across from you at the table.
“I don’t like how this looks,” there’s a noticeable tick in his jaw as he keeps his eyes focused on you.
“I didn’t tell you everything – about what I am,” you begin to explain, wrapping your hands around the coffee mug in front of you nervously. “Everytime a Phoenix dies and is reborn, or rises, a part of our soul burns off. It’s an incentive really, to keep you from dying. The more you die, the sooner you become a soulless monster, not caring about anything or anyone. Killing others becomes a second nature to us then, at least while we have a soul, we can keep that part of us in check.” You watch him closely as you speak, making sure he’s understanding everything as you say it.
“So, the two men at the warehouse?”
“Yea,” you nod shamefully. “Phoenixes are immortal, but we are destined to be killed eventually. A final death, one which we don’t rise from. When a Phoenix rises for the first time, there’s a name you’re given. The name of the person who will ultimately be the one to kill you – bring about your final death. Usually a hunter, or someone along those lines. Sometimes, that person may not enter your life for hundreds or thousands of years.” You glance out the window thoughtfully, “You have no idea what it’s like to know the name of the person who will kill you. Live with that for years, but you can’t run from fate.”
Steve sits across from you solemnly as he processes the information you’re sharing, “Can you change it?”
You shake your head. “I wanted to though. I wanted to change my destiny, kill the person whose name I was given before he had a chance to kill me. I found him too, but fate had other plans,” you glance away from him. “She’s cruel that way – fate – destiny or whatever it is that’s written in the stars. None of it would have ever happened if I’d not been trying to change it.”
“Whose name were you given?” he asks quietly.
“Yours,” you say, looking back over to him. “Steve Rogers.”
It looks as if you’ve punched him in the gut. That night, all those years ago, when he saw the prettiest girl at the party walking his way, it was because you had planned on killing him. Because eventually he was supposed to kill you.
“I never wanted to be your friend Steve,” you let the words slip out quietly. “Then Bucky happened, and I let my guard down. That wasn’t fair to you and I’m sorry.”
His mouth goes dry as he shakes his head, “But I wouldn’t –”
“You won’t have a choice Steve,” you reply. “When my soul is gone, that’s it.”
There’s a moment of silence between the two of you as he shakes his head in frustration. “How much is left?” he questions you, his brows furrowing together. “Of your soul?”
“Not enough.”
“There has to be a way we can fix this,” he tries to reason with you.
“No, we can’t,” you look at him hopelessly. “This is it. We both know what’s coming and I need you to promise me, when it happens, you’ll take care it.”
“I can’t do that,” the pain on his face is enough to break your heart.
“You have too. When there’s nothing left of me, I’ll just be a shell. The person you love won’t be here anymore, I’ll be a monster,” you can see the wretched expression on his face as you stand up from the table. “Promise me.” Steve looks out the window as he starts to chew on his bottom lip. You reach down, placing your hand on top of his, squeezing it gently, “Please.”
He glances up at you with glossy blue eyes. He’s broken because of you and you’ll never forgive yourself for this. You shouldn’t have come back.
“I promise,” his words are barely audible.
“I should go,” you say before leaning down to kiss his cheek gently. “I do love you.” The words come out as a whisper against his skin before you stand back up. You make it halfway to the door when you hear the chair scraping across the hardwood floor roughly. Steve is on you by the time you turn around, his hand flying to the side of you neck roughly, pulling you back to him. His lips crash into yours hard and desperate as tears slowly stream down your face.
Sometimes your soulmate isn’t the person you fall madly in love with, sometimes it’s the person you least expect.
A beautiful disaster.
Steve Rogers is your soulmate.
He’s also the man who will have to kill you one day when your soul no longer exists.
The thought of it shatters your heart and you’d give anything if you could take that burden away from him, but fate is cruel.
“I’ll see you around Steve,” you state quietly as you move to grab your duffel bag.
He watches as you open the door to his apartment, his face full of sadness as he says the words firmly, “I hope not.”

I think something so fundamental to Naruto as a story is the fact that Naruto and Sasuke’s individual journeys in relation to Konoha—as a system and as a collective of people—are always going to send them in opposite directions. Like I realize that a lot of fans (including me, at times) wanted anything but angst for them as a conclusion, after all that they went through, but in doing so I think people ignore something undeniable about the story itself. As the story progresses, Konoha becomes a home to Naruto, and a source of exile to Sasuke. More under the cut!
The problems I have with Naruto’s post-canon—Chapter 700 and onward—lie mostly in the idea that Sasuke is willing to bend and cater to this system that:
manipulated his brother into massacring his whole family,
isolated him as a result of that massacre, fixing his hatred on a singular point with no thought to how that situation could easily spiral, which it did,
provided him with no knowledge as to why that massacre actually occurred,
and when he did find out the reason, lead him to realize that Konoha was a village that had never wanted him to begin with, that he had been spared solely because his brother loved him that much (but even then, that love wasn’t without consequence, and it was manipulated by the background intentions of Konoha’s elite),
and, regardless of all these facts, continued to alienate and criminalize him rather than help or address his trauma and his very valid reasons for rage aimed at the village.
Do I agree that there were better ways for Sasuke to go about his intentions once he recognized Konoha’s elite for the scum of the earth that they were? Sure. But I also think it’s important to recognize that he was incredibly destabilized as a child, and it’s amazing, because for some people this is a very hard thing to understand? I think fandom doesn’t realize the difference in the words ‘justified’ and ‘explained’. Were all of Sasuke’s actions in canon justified? Maybe not (although a lot were). Were all of his actions well explained by his trauma? Honestly, yeah.
So to circle back to the point that I am trying to make—it’s true that during Part I, he grew very close to Team 7, and for a brief moment in time, these relationships were like a lifeline for him. But think about it—is a connection that you hold to three people enough to keep you in a village where you hardly feel connected to the rest? This is only a mild issue for Sasuke at the end of Part I; he doesn’t feel very connected to most people in Konoha, but at best, they’re just annoying background noise, trivial obstacles in the face of his goal to hunt down and murder Itachi.
By the end of Part II, however, it’s overwhelmingly integral to his situation. Over the course of his journey, he’s come to learn that Konoha as a system always viewed him—his family—as a potential threat. His life was spared by his brother, but even that came with consequences and orders orchestrated by Danzo and co.; add onto that the chaos that he wrecked once he was free of Orochimaru’s tutelage, and you have a person who didn’t just alienate himself from his village, but who was alienated by that village in turn.
It just makes so much sense to me that he leaves at the end of Chapter 699, because while he obviously cares deeply for Naruto and Sakura, is it really realistic to imagine him staying there just for them? What would he do, and what purpose would staying there serve him? This village rendered his entire life a lie, trivialized his existence, and traumatized him as a result. Aside from his connection to Naruto, by the end of the manga, Sasuke is purposeless. For someone whose entire arc is propelled by hate and sadness that stems from a very specific purpose, he ends up in this strange, sort of in-limbo space. . .
. . . which is why I actually like the idea that he decided to go on a journey for himself. It’s why I like the Blank Period notion of him being this forever traveler who drops in on occasion to help when circumstances are dire. It’s a good balance for him. In the fast-forwarded post-canon, however, we see that he’s essentially become a more child-friendly Itachi equivalent—he’s signed his life away to forever protect Konoha from behind the scenes, despite the fact that it comes at the cost of him neglecting his own family, and for the sake of a populace that for the most part does not care for him. It just feels like such a cruel way for his story to come full circle, after everything that he went through, because as much as he loves Naruto, Sasuke admitting to loss is more an acceptance to let love in, in full, and to let it guide him over the hatred he’d harbored in his heart for so long. That doesn’t have to be equivalent to submitting himself to Konoha—it just means that he should allow himself to prioritize his own needs and desires, rather than let anyone else’s evil or trauma guide him, as it has for the whole story.
And actually, that notion, to me, is what made Naruto’s character progression and ending make a lot of sense in comparison. He is someone who constantly strove for heartfelt connection to others, despite the pain and rejection that it could very often inflict on himself. In many ways, it was a dangerous way to think, and he often came off as naive(, which Naruto as a story is plenty criticized for, because it easily runs counter-intuitive to any sort of worthy political commentary on the series), but it also made him a very hopeful and independent person. He didn’t allow what others thought of him or inflicted upon him to guide his thinking, and he was very much someone who prioritized his own heart over the malice of others.
So naturally, Naruto always ran in a direction opposed to Sasuke as a result of this thinking—and we know this. Befriending and changing the people around him for the better was what propelled Naruto more than anything, and it’s why Konoha ended up as a home for him despite everything it and its people did to discourage and put him down. He had to go to ridiculous lengths to prove himself, and in many ways it was cruel to realize, but he also formed so many valuable relationships along the way. Like, his relationship with Sasuke obviously takes precedence, because it is the foundation and catalyst for everything, but I don’t really agree with people who view Naruto’s dream of becoming Hokage as an obstacle to that bond. I actually feel like those were goals that ran in parallel for him. And I mean, he even says it, doesn’t he? How is he supposed to become Hokage if he can’t even bring back this one friend from darkness. It just resonates so much to me that by the end of the story, Naruto is someone actually prepared to take on the mantle of Hokage—because he understands other people’s pain, and he runs with it, and he is insistent upon making the people around him love themselves because he knows how miserable he was as a child hardly able to love himself.
In that sense, Chapter 699 is, to me, a really great chapter. I think it captures that forever diverging dichotomy between him and Sasuke perfectly. Naruto is a story equally about Naruto making a home for himself in Konoha as it is about Sasuke freeing himself from the same village’s shackles. True, there is this intense, deeply rooted love that they are always going to have for each other, but that love is something that runs alongside their own personal feelings and ambitions, rather than against it. I think people get caught up in the idea that a happy ending for them has to mean that they’re together together, but to me there’s a certain poetry in them going their own separate ways. Konoha is no longer a home for Sasuke (if it ever was, even a little), but that relationship to Naruto and Team 7 will forever be important to him and influence him wherever he goes; and Konoha has become a home for Naruto, but it’s also with the peace of knowing that Sasuke won’t ever succumb to the darkness of others again, and will love himself first.
So, tldr; I think the notion of Naruto ending with Naruto and Sasuke going their separate ways is kind of ingenious, because it ties deeply into what Konoha means to each of them by the end of it. This isn’t me saying that I think they’re never going to see each other again—I just don’t think the conclusion to their individual arcs has to be in opposition to what their relationship means to them. They can continue to be intensely important to each other, while prioritizing their own hopes and dreams. That’s the beauty and tragedy of their relationship to me. (Chapter 700, who?)

Supercorp
It was a precarious situation. Lena wondered how she always seems to find herself in the middle of those. Right now, Supergirl was tied to a wall, barely conscious due to the Kryptonite conveniently placed all around her; just the right amount to subdue her yet keep her aware of her surroundings.
Lena had just come to after being knocked unconscious by Eve in her office. She should have seen that coming, she thought to herself. Her head throbbed in sync to the beat of her pulse. She watched her brother pace back and forth in front of a screen, replaying what seemed like every interaction she ever had with Supergirl on a loop. Something wet and warm trickled down her forehead, and when she reached she found her fingers sticky with red, hot blood.
“Ah, finally! You’re awake. We’ve been waiting for you to wake up for 13 minutes Lena. You know it’s rude to keep people waiting, I taught you better than that. Sit up straight! Respect is built on the foundation of propriety and composure. Show your big brother some respect! Then again, it is not entirely your fault is it? Miss Teschmacher may have been a tad bit... overzealous in her execution.”
“What am I doing here Lex?” Lena bit out.
“Yes of course, straight to the point as usual. You see, I told you, Lena, to always mind the company you keep. And sure, I can disregard many things... you sending me to jail: sibling rivalry. Changing the company name: petulant yet expected. But, working together with that alien scum to take me down is a betrayal I wasn’t expecting from you!” Lex’ voice started out as mild taunting but by the end had been consumed by rage. He was living up to his reputation as a mad man; wildly gesticulating, spit flying everywhere. If he had had hair it would be sticking out in all directions. So much for composure.
Of course Lena knew what this was about. She’s known for three weeks, ever since Lex escaped from prison, that he was going to come after her. She wasn’t really worried about herself; she knew their confrontation was inevitable. Neither could live as long as the other survived. If only her life was as magical as these novels. Unlike Harry though, she was all alone. No dependents who would suffer from her proximity, no family to mourn her untimely and cruel death, and no friends who would miss her during random lunch dates or impromptu game nights. Well, one friend. Kara. Kara was her solace in an otherwise dreary existence. Kara who she had come to care for as more than the best friend she pretended to be. Kara who she should have cut ties with as soon as she received the first foreboding letter. The letter, sent anonymously by Lex, that seemingly was just fanmail by a devoted admirer, sweetly relaying his adulation through Ancient Greek song. Turns out she could have avoided a tragedy, but she was Icarus flying too close to the sun, incapable to resist. She will pay the price for this.
“Let her go. Please! It is me you want. Take me!” Supergirl feebly tried to fight off her restraints. Her voice barely audible, rough and scratchy from exhaustion. Lena admired her perseverance. Supergirl’s sense for justice never seemed selfrighteous, a feat her cousin couldn’t quite pull off. Despite their dissent Supergirl didn’t falter in trying to protect her; maybe in a promise to Kara? Wishful thinking.
“There won’t be much of you left to take, Kryptonian! Besides, you have no value to me, no. This is personal. This time I came here to quench my thirst for revenge. You see, most people think we Luthors don’t have emotions. And usually they would be right in their assessment, however limited it might be. Average brains produce average results. But nothing about us Luthors is average. We are eminent, exceptional, extraordinary. And so are our feelings. And you,” he turned his burning eyes to Lena, “hurt mine. It is not just that. It is a matter of respect, isn’t it. How dare you drag our name through the mud-”
“Me?! I wasn’t the one who went on a suicidal mission-”
“How DARE you use MY company, my brain, my knowledge, my tech for the empowerment of those roaches ?! HOW DARE YOU. Everything you have is because of me. Everything you built, every business deal you closed, every prestigious award you got, the recognition, the applaud, the esteem. EVERYTHING you are, is because of me. Without me you are nothing. I made you who you are and you go against me.” He closed his eyes and exhaled sharply, seemingly gathering his composure. “How dare you betray me like that, sis?” He turned his back to her. Supergirl was stunned speechless, deliriously following Lex’ tirade. Lena used this opportunity to scan her surroundings. They were being held in what looked like some sort of cave. It was dark and moist, and the air smelled of sulfur. Against the confinements of the cavern Lex had constructed his head-quarters. The only exit was a tight tunnel, pitch-black and not very promising to aid them in their escape to daylight, it was also very inconveniently located on the opposite end of where Supergirl was tied up. And Lena was not leaving without her. Their future seemed dismal.
Lex took a deep inhale. “It is vile. What you did to me... I want you to feel it to. Before I kill you, I will see the same betrayal in your eyes and on your dying breath you will realise, that you were alone all along, just like me.”
“She is not alone! And she will never be like you. Don’t listen to him Lena.” Lex laughed hysterically. “Oh, that’s rich coming from you, Supergirl. See, I realised some while ago that people with feelings tend to be more concerned about their loved ones. Indeed, they care more about those who are near and dear to them, completely disregarding their own self in the act, which turns out to be the grounds of their demise. And, unfortunately for you, Lena, you are as selfless and tempestuous as they come.” Lex paused for seemingly no other reason than dramatic effect. For a guy so aversed to theatrics he had a flair for ostentatious performance.
He side-eyed Supergirl surreptitiously. “Say, how is that reporter friend of yours? Kara Danvers?” Lex smirked mischievously. Supergirl began fidgeting frantically. Lena’s brain whirred to life. She started working through all the ways that this could play out at a highspeed. “What about her?” She chose nonchalance. She knew she had been putting Kara at risk by befriending her, but staying away seemed impossible. If anything happened to the bubbly reporter just because Lena wanted to indulge in a hopeless little crush, Lena would never forgive herself.
It might have even been more than a crush. Lena remembers the night vividly that she realised she was in too deep. They had known each other for a little over a year by then. Eventhough they were colleagues now (well, technically, she was her boss) the acquisition of Catco brought with it a shitload of paperwork, board meetings, and late-night phone calls that had to be dealt with, and Lena was stretched even thinner than usual. They hadn’t seen each other for a month after their reconciliation, and Lena was just happy to spend some quality time with her best friend who finally seemed to be over her ex. When Kara had initially invited her over Lena wanted to decline. Abstaining that long from Kara’s cheeriness had made her revert back to old customs. Lena had resigned herself to go back to being lonely, writing Kara off as a shooting star that briefly flew by to illuminate her firmament for a precious while, too good to last. But Kara had insisted and she couldn’t resist her pull.
So she had made herself comfortable on Kara’s couch, dressed down in comfy clothes that no one was allowed to see her in except for Kara. She had ordered Chinese food, knowing Lena’s taste by heart, and while Lena was animatedly telling her about her childhood before she was adopted, Kara not so sneakily stole some chicken from her box. There was nothing new about that; Kara was known to be a voracious eater and often snuck some food in from foreign plates. What she did next, however, was unprecedented: she replaced the chicken with a potsticker from her own plate. She had spent enough time with the Danvers sisters to know that Kara sharing food had near-apocalyptic implications. But for her to do it so casually, while keenly and earnestly absorbing every word of Lena’s most treasured tales, that’s what made Lena’s heart simultaneously expand and implode at once. In the warmth of the fairy lights, lounging on the snuggly sofa, Lena lost her heart to riveting eyes and giddy laughter.
Now, she wished she would have closed her eyes and made a wish. Letting the shooting star take its destined course. Now, that star was gonna crash and burn, diminishing all hope in its wake, all because Lena could not stay away. Because Lena was selfish. “Don’t play dumb now, sis, inanity doesn’t suit you. We all know how you feel about that bimbo. Though I have to admit, you always had a keen eye for beauty. Unfortunately, you never bothered to look beyond what’s on the surface. Well, how do they say? ‘Love is blind.’ Isn’t it right, Supergirl?”
If they weren’t in a situation of life and death Lena would have been petrified. She was very careful to never show even an ounce of her overwhelming affection to anybody. Least of all people who she knew were connected to Kara and might tell her about Lena’s deplorable feelings causing Kara to finally abandon her, kindness be damned. Least of all people who had a unyielding sense of rectitude and might believe Kara had a right to know about what Lena was so desperately hiding. Least of all people like Supergirl.
Alas, she had more pressing matters to attend. “Don’t you dare touch her! You hear me, Lex, you go after her and you will regret the day you were born!” Lex’ grin turned from smug to wicked. “Oh, don’t worry little sis, I won’t even come near her. You see, it just happened to be the case that you, dearest Lena, embraced the provenance of your own demise. It just happens that delay is the deadliest form of denial. And you’ve been in denial for so long. We Luthors, we do feel emotions. Just not all of them, no, only the crucial ones. Avarice, pride, rage, and betrayal. Fuelling our power. And once you feel that betrayal, Lena, you will kill for me two birds with one stone. You will drive yourself to death in your quest for revenge and you will take that pathetic Supergirl with you. Feel the rage Lena. Feel the betrayal.”
Lex turned towards the screens mounted on the cave walls just as Supergirl tore free of her restraints in an anguished scream.

Why would you recommend the untamed to someone? I’ve seen all your posts and reblogs and I know you love it (I’m already intrigued and will watch it) but it’d be nice and fun if you could explain why you love it so much, because 1. I really want to know and 2. At least I love talking about things I love sooo I hope you don’t mind this ask 😬🥺
ooh okay i’m so bad at trying to put my thoughts into words but i’ll try my best. i’ll put it under a ‘read more’ because this going to be a long response, i feel. also let me just start by saying thank you. i love, love, love talking about what i love and sharing my loves with others; and i don’t always have people in my life to do that with. so it means so much to me that you’ve reached out like this and are asking me to do this. like, that just has made my day. also, please feel free to DM me if you’d like and we can talk more that way. alrighty, the rest is under the cut!
first of all, i was drawn to the trope. the kind of enemies to lovers (they’re not really enemies to lovers, but there’s still that kind of banter to it), banter and flirting trope that i am a huge sucker for. i knew nothing about it going into it, and when i learned that the wwx and lwj are canonically romantically involved and not just shipped by the fans of the show, that definitely caught my interest in a massive way. they are canonically soulmates and lovers. i decided to give it a shot and within the first few moments, i was completely immersed. some of the special effects come across a bit goofy but the cgi scenery is stunning and every scene looks and feels like a work of art. that’s something that really captured me.
then there’s the characters themselves. without giving too much away, let’s talk about them for a moment. wwx (wei wuxian) is every bit the playful, mischievous little monster who always has a smile on his face and is always ready to tease and make others smile. but his story is one of immense pain and suffering, and yet in spite of these things, he still smiles. in spite of his childhood, in spite of the people who raised him, in spite of so much pain he still smiles and giggles and flirts and teases. and the moment he sets his eyes on lwj (lan wangji), he’s pretty much completely smitten. he wants to befriend him and make him smile and have fun with him but lwj is so immersed in the rules of his clan that everything wwx is and does is so alien to him. but wwx is persistent. always smiling, always waving, always trying to do everything he can to get lwj’s attention on him and make him smile.
as for lwj, his brother says it best: he raised him very strictly, and wwj doesn’t have anyone besides him. his brother sees wwx as being good for him. he’s amused by wwx and thinks lwj having some like wwx around would do him some good. but imagine being lwj, in this very rigid society having known nothing else outside of rules and regulations and here comes this little gremlin to throw a wrench into it all; with his total lack of obedience and formality; however all at the same time still being your closest match both intellectually and when it comes to fighting. wwx catches his curiosity. there’s a point where they’re traveling together and lwj’s brother tells him he invited wwx along because he knew lwj wanted him to come along. all the while lwj still can barely make eye contact with wwx.
all the characters are extremely multifaceted. some will make you feel such genuine hatred and anger while at the same time, making you feel immense pity for the pain they’ve endured. the story that unfolds is so beautiful and you truly grow attached to these characters as you watch them fight and endure.
the love story itself is another huge point. i am a sucker for pining and kind of that pride and prejudice level of romance of secret gazes, soft touches, blushing cheeks, quickly turning away of gazes, stolen looks. it’s filled to the brim with those little moments. lwj is the very definition of Panic Gay and wwx is the very definition of confident gay (or bi). he isn’t afraid to strip out of his clothes without a care if lwj is right there, or pester him with flirting and teasing; all the while with lwj having a complete existential criss every single time lol also the soulmates aspect. at the heart of the story is the story of soulmates being reunited once again, years later. the story of how they first met, fell in love, came together, became tragically separated, and how they found each other once again.
the story of family is another huge point too. the brokenness of family and the relationship of wwx with his brother just guts me to my core. there’s such a conflict of both deep hatred and deep love. i don’t want to give much away about that, but it’s something i love deeply about the show.
lastly, the humor. this is a show that centers quite literally around death. there’s awfulness quite frequently. death, destruction. but there’s so many moments of such genuine humor and you’ll be crying one moment and laughing the next. it balances itself out so well like that. in so many ways it creates such balance. there’s fierce scenes of battle with blood and death and destruction and then beautiful scenes of nature and serenity and peacefulness. it’s like that with so many other aspects as well. it just all comes together in such a beautiful harmony.
i’ve never found anything like this that has sparked something like this in me in such a profound way. and maybe my posts about it are a bit excessive and annoying to those who aren’t interested, but i haven’t been moved like this by something and i kind of want to metaphorically shout it from the rooftops and share it with literally everyone i can how beautiful and profound this story is. i really want to share it with so many out there and i do hope you take these things into consideration and do give it a chance. it’s a beautiful, beautiful story.
also, please feel free to DM me and we can talk more in depth and i can share some youtube videos with you that can help you test the waters a bit. thank you so much for reaching out and asking me about this ♡
#this is a verrrrrry rough outline of things lol#there's so so so much more#and so much more to the characters#so much darkness and light and depth than i can go into right now#but i hope this helps you understand a bit#and i hope i managed to express myself in a proper way#i'm still very new to the fandom and so i don't know much#but this is what i can share with you#without giving too much away about the story itself

anons on the dragon prince
Yes, we all know the comparison points, so I’m skipping those to focus solely on tDP. Alright, starting from the top.
It does speak volumes [...] that tDP has seemingly (and unless proven otherwise in s2 by a fan theory coming true) killed one of a major CoC after only 3 episodes [but] the fandom, and PoC fans more importantly, still trust Ehasz/Wonderstorm and the story to not let them down ...
I was talking to someone the other day who DM’d me about finally seeing tDP, who said something along the lines of “I feel like I can breathe.” Which isn’t that far off what @ptw30 and I were telling each other, when we binge-watched tDP the night of its release.
First episode, we were both a little ennnhhh over the animation style. Second episode, we barely noticed that anymore. Third episode, everything went to hell in a handbasket and yet our shared reaction was something along the lines of, “I feel like I can settle in, and let the story go where it’s going. I don’t have to stress about this. The writers have got this.”
Think of being a passenger when the driver isn’t sure where they’re going. They slow repeatedly to check road signs, show an ‘ehhhh oh right no no we’re fine’ expression (or say it out loud), or switch lanes back and forth unexpectedly. Eventually you’re going to give serious thought to pulling out your phone and offering to navigate, just so someone in the car has a clue. Failing that, you end up worrying whether you’ll get there on time (or at all).
Not once did tDP give me the remotest worry about where it’s going. Even if it seems counterintuitive that we could get to a Manhattan happy ending by way of a Brooklyn character death, the story must have a good reason. We can relax and enjoy the trip.
It’s hard to pin down what creates that trust for an audience, because it’s so many things. It’s a combination of setups and payoffs. It’s getting emotional beats at regular intervals. It’s having questions raised and getting just enough answered that you don’t feel like the story is covering for not actually knowing and/or hoping you won’t notice it’s making things up as it goes along.
More behind the cut: tDP’s handling of race, who’s right vs wrong, and whether tDP’s storytelling can/will surpass AtLA.
I rewatched The Dragon Prince recently and it's amazing how carefully they show racism in only 9 episodes [where other shows failed in multiple seasons]. You can see what happens when people in charge care not only about their own characters, but also the audience following their story.
It’s a very thoughtful story, in the sense that the writers clearly put a great deal of thought into each character’s perspective and place. General Amaya is a walking poster child for How To Do This Shit Right Yo, as is Ava. It makes sense that no less attention was paid to the potentially complicated issue of racism, and how viewers’ real-world experiences would impact and layer on top of what the story is trying to do.
I mean, tDP could’ve decided that Amaya would be deaf... and then proceed to make up its own sign language. Or that magic could (and should) heal disabilities. When the story did neither, it told me the writing team is aware stories don’t exist in a vacuum: that disabled viewers have also been waiting to see themselves on screen, as characters with agency, treated with respect.
(The lack of subtitles for Amaya may’ve confused those of us who don’t know ASL, but it was absolutely a gift to those who do. It was saying: hey, this is just for you. All those times you’ve missed something that hearing people take for granted? Now’s your turn to be the one in the know. And come on, that’s just awesome.)
Will tDP stumble at some point? Sure. Stories and people are complex things, and the world is a thousand times more so. It’s not the stumbling that bothers me. It’s when a story is thoughtless, because it won’t even recognize its stumbles, let alone fix them.
I really struggle with liking the show, specifically because it seems to take the stance that the elf girl was "right" to betray the other elves (leading to the slaughter of her entire team). beyond the pain of the ribbon, she doesn't seem to show any sadness or remorse, and then it seems that the human characters are quick to condemn the elf assassins, instead of the king's slaughter of the dragon king. what writing purpose does this serve?
It serves to prompt exactly what you’re doing: asking questions.
The story is full of conflicting interpretations of events, actions, reactions, and motivations if you just think twice. The humans may fear the elves, and do their best to prevent the elves from succeeding --- but Harrow acknowledged explicitly that it’s not as though the elves don’t have just cause. Harrow wasn’t going to go down easy, but I saw no condemnation on his part upon the elves’ retaliation for human crimes.
Callum argued with Harrow over why Harrow couldn’t just ‘make peace.’ When Rayla shows Runaan the egg and demands Runaan call everything off, isn’t she effectively arguing the same thing? Additionally, Rayla went into the castle determined to make up for her failing; if she’d succeeded in her mission (especially with Callum’s misdirection), it’d be a very short story, indeed. Instead, the three protagonists end up unified in their hope that this could prevent any further bloodshed.
Note that I say ‘further’ because what is done, and out of their control, is done. Rayla didn’t act out of a wish to betray; when she choose not to assassinate the prince, she acted out of a hope there could be peace. When the first ribbon falls off and the messenger-arrow flies overhead, Rayla’s assumption makes sense, based on those two details: her team achieved at least one of their goals. We don’t know their fate (other than Runaan), but it also sets up a later plot-point where Rayla discovers the team did not, in fact, all return intact.
For that matter, by the time she learns those details (and concludes who won and who lost), she’s already befriended the princes. From the very first scene, it’s clear Rayla isn’t cut out for this assassination business. She’s incapable of seeing targets. As Ezran later notes, she sees people as, well, people, even when they’re strangers. Is it really so surprising that she’d waffle even more, once those strangers have become something nearing friends, or at least allies?
So she chooses to keep silent, and her motivation is wonderfully complex, from a writer’s perspective. She wants peace, and believes returning the egg will do that, so reminding the two princes of her role in their father’s death would alienate them, and put her desires at risk. She likes the princes by that point, and doesn’t want to hurt them with such news. And she’s also feeling guilty for the part she played, especially knowing her secret (not just of failing her mission but of preventing anyone else from succeeding) is probably already known.
Most of that thought process seems to get decided early in the journey. After that, Rayla goes through all the stages as she realizes the consequences of failing to fulfill a sacred oath: anger, bargaining, grief. At the end, Rayla weighs the two options --- keeping her hand, vs killing someone innocent of any crime --- and decides her hand is a small sacrifice in comparison.
(Note that thematically, this is echoed in Ava’s story. Ava’s paw was caught in a trap, and escaping came at the cost of her paw. Yet Ava remains perfect as she is, and it’s only other people who require Ava appear to be whole. Part of the reason for going up the mountain is to save the egg, but Rayla also implies she wishes she could save her hand, too. Ava’s story is telling us that such a disability doesn’t and shouldn’t render Rayla broken or useless.)
Alongside that, the boys don’t seem to have fully put together their father’s role in the current situation. I think Callum might have (in a roundabout way), but not so much for Ezran. It’s a process, though. First we’re shown the princes were raised with a bias they’ve never had reason to question, about elves being bloodthirsty monsters. The story lets Rayla call them on it and express her hurt, and the boys are remorseful.
The story also doesn’t position Callum (as human) as always knowing the rightness of things; hell, it takes Rayla calling him a mage before he even realizes the meaning of what he’s done. The story also shows the boys are eager to learn (and willing to question their assumptions), when Callum asks Rayla what it’s like in her country.
By the end of S1, both princes have worked their way through several points: from ‘all elves are bad’ to ‘Rayla is the one exception’ to ‘maybe elves aren’t the monsters we were told they are.’ The next logical step is for them to begin questioning their father’s actions. Like you, the story is leading them into questioning things that they took for granted when the story began.
That’s the purpose of creating a story where perspective shifts with each new character: the story is rewarding you for digging deeper.
A story that doesn’t want those questions raised --- that isn’t prepared to grapple with them --- would tell you from the get-go, “elves are plain evil, that’s all there is to it.” Or, “humans are always good and their actions are righteous.” Any hint of a conflicting perspective would eventually be revealed as false within the story, or a minor oversight outside the story.
Where tDP is so well-crafted is that it’s given everything enough layers and conflicts that poking at the story reveals more underneath. All you have to do is give it a bit of thought, and you can see a larger picture, and that larger story’s view may be tilted from what you’ve seen so far, if not flipped outright (or flipped back again). That’s the beauty of a large cast where each character has their own motivation, agency, reasons and beliefs and assumptions: there’s always another side to things.
That’s what makes a story truly rich and deep. Not the worldbuilding, not the complexity of the final solution, not the number of product placements or jokes or high-octane fight sequences. It’s characters with individual perspectives and motivations, agreeing and conflicting per their own purposes, and each one seeing themselves as the hero of their own story.
...what is it about TDP that makes it a good show for you? What is it you like about it, what about it pulls you in? And would you say it's on par or close to the quality of Avatar?
I think my answers above have probably already covered your question, but I’ll add this: I think tDP has potential to not just be ‘on par’ with Avatar but to leave it far, far behind.
I mean, AtLA is already ten years old. In 2003, Ehasz’ credits consisted of three freelance episodes for two shows, and one episode as a staff writer. That’s it. That he catapulted from that to head-of-story for AtLA speaks to a definite talent --- but of course he’d get better from there, with ten intervening years of continuing to hone his craft.
I’d say there are two places where it’s most apparent: exposition and humor. While I (mostly) like AtLA, the exposition could be somewhat clunky. It needed to be in there, but it wasn’t always quite as deft as I would’ve liked, in terms of combining information with characterization.
The writing in tDP is far superlative in that regard. We get exposition, yes, but it's not delivering answers so much as answering one thing to raise ten more questions. There are almost no “as you know Bob” exchanges. When Rayla talks about what her country is like, it’s exposition, but it’s also a wonderful characterization moment; Rayla’s love for her world shines through, along with a certain ambivalence about her place in that world.
The other place Ehasz has improved a thousand-fold is his humor. One of the things I hated most about AtLA was its use of bathos: taking a serious moment and turning on a dime to crack a joke and trivialize the moment. (Sokka was the worst offender, but no character was immune.) As AtLA went on, the story scaled back on that, but it still raised its head often enough to make me wince.
In contrast, tDP’s humor is seamlessly organic. When Rayla yells, “I’m not falling for that flashing frog trick again!” she’s deadly serious, but that makes the bizarre phrase even funnier. When Gren translates Amaya’s sarcasm and has a beat in which he’s clearly trying to find a family-friendly way to translate “bullshit”... that beat is the joke. We don’t need someone gesticulating wildly to tell us it’s funny.
At the same time, Ehasz is clearly unafraid, now, to let the serious moments be. He doesn’t trivialize the characters’ emotions with a joke; the story isn’t afraid we’ll see it as cheesy or asinine -- as less -- when it’s being sincere.
As Carol Burnett once put it, comedy is tragedy at a distance. What tDP is doing isn’t comedy in that sense, where the characters themselves (as AtLA often did) use humor to distance themselves. Instead, it’s humor most often in one of three modes.
One is when a character intends to crack a joke: Soren and Claudia jibing each other, or Callum attempting to lighten everyone’s spirits. This is kept relatively light, so it’s not a constant thing, as if too much levity is to be feared.
The second is simply a witty delivery, like Rayla when her temper’s up. She doesn’t deliver the line “I’m habsolutely hurious” as if she expects a laugh; she is angry, after all. Or when Soren decides to let Callum 'win’ the bout: Soren’s melodramatic as all get out, but he’s not mocking Callum, for whom impressing Claudia is a big deal. Soren’s dramatic words and over-acting are actually a wonderfully compact characterization that tells us a whole lot in a single scene of what someone should expect when Soren tries to ‘help’.
In the penultimate episode, when Rayla accepts the consequences of her choice and decides she’s okay with paying, this is a significant emotional beat. Her conclusion is... well, it makes sense given her thoughts to this point.
But it’s also a blunt and rather startling way to put it. Again, this isn’t cracking a joke to create distance from emotion. It’s wittier than that.
Ezran’s shock as he registers the words is barely two frames. Any longer and it’d be overplayed. Between basically saying someone's friendship is worth a body part, and Ezran’s half-beat of shock, the combination definitely startled a laugh out of me.
And here’s the thing: in AtLA, one of the two would’ve cracked a joke. The story would’ve backed away from what really, underneath, is a pretty phenomenal admission. Not just of friendship, but also of how Rayla herself has changed so significantly between when she made that oath, versus where she sits now.
Ezran’s response is both funny (again, in a witty sense) but also just as heartfelt. It’s also extremely telling in terms of Ezran’s characterization.
The one character most likely to crack a joke --- Callum --- doesn’t always, either. In fact, sometimes he’s remarkably vulnerable and honest in ways Sokka, his spiritual predecessor, wasn’t allowed to be. At the same point that Ezran and Rayla are having their heart-to-heart, Callum’s admitting freely that he doesn’t have immense power; he just has a swirly stone that does the work for him. He doesn’t make a joke of Ellis’ compliment, nor make fun of himself.
Ellis’ line was delivered seriously, as she has every reason to believe her perspective is true. If Callum were to joke, he’d be mocking her sincerity, and the story is willing to respect that Callum is someone who responds to sincerity with sincerity of his own.
In a word, tDP is unafraid of its own heart.

Could you do thirteenth doc x reader where somehow on every adventure, reader manages to find, and befriend, some animal, and cute fluff
Here you go, love. I hope you like it.
“Is that a dog?” Yaz asked.
You glanced behind you, noticing the friend you’d made following along behind. You shrugged, not knowing what to say. All you’d done was give him a belly rub and ear scratch. He’d been following you since, tail wagging and tongue lolling.
“Nope,” the Doctor said, scanning the dog with her sonic, “more like an alien dog. Well, almost a dog. Very like a dog.”
“Alien dog?” you asked, looking down at your friend, “cool.”
You knelt down, reaching your hand out to him. He trotted over, sitting himself in front of you. You patted him, looking him over. He looked like a normal dog, like the one you’d had as a child growing up. He rolled over onto his back, asking for more belly rubs. You happily obliged.
Ryan wandered over, looking as if he wanted to get in on the love fest, but the dog rolled back over, growling at your friend. You put your hand on the dog’s back, shooing Ryan away. He took a step away, hands raised. The dog stopped growling, turning back to you with a wagging tail. You scratched behind his ears and stood up again.
“I love him,” you told the group.
The Doctor nodded and started walking again. You followed behind, watching the dog, making sure he was keeping up. Ryan was staying well away from him, warily watching the dog. Yaz kept smiling at him.
“We can’t keep him,” the Doctor said over her shoulder.
“Please,” you asked, hurrying up to slip your arm through hers. She looked at you, that knowing look in her eye.
“We don’t know if someone already owns him,” she said.
“But I love him,” you said pouting.
She shook her head, chuckling. She tightened her arm around you, stopping you from falling back. You lent your head on her shoulder, looking up at the smokey sky. You knew you’d have to say goodbye to your new friend, just as you had every other time.
“Why do you always make friends with the local wildlife?” Graham asked. He skirted around the dog to fall into step with the two of you.
“Dunno,” you said, “maybe I’m a Disney princess.”
Yaz had to stop from laughing. Ryan snorted but then jumped back when the dog barked. You shushed him, dropping back to pet him. He calmed under your hand, looking up at you with those big eyes. You gave him a final pat and stood up again.
“I really do love him,” you told the Doctor.
She threaded her fingers through yours, pulling you along beside her. Graham was shaking his head at you but Yaz looked as if she understood.
“We’re not bringing him home with us,” the Doctor said.
“You’re mean,” you said, pouting.
The Doctor stopped you, looking down at you with eyes very similar to the dog’s. They were all big and beautiful, and you felt as if you could fall into them. She squeezed your hand and you had to bring yourself back to the present.
“Do you really think I’m mean?” she asked.
You shook your head trying to hide your smile. She titled your chin up. She scrunched her face when she saw you smiling and spun away from you, continuing on towards the building you were investigating.
“Aw, come on Doctor, don’t be like that,” you said following after her, “you’re not mean.”
“In her defence, it’s a very cute dog,” Yaz said.
“She asks if she can keep every animal she meets,” Graham said, “we would have had a huge eagle flying round the TARDIS if you’d said yes.”
“Or that squid thing,” Ryan said.
“Hey, that squid thing was very useful,” you said, “made that guy fall into the lake letting the Doctor be brilliant and save the day.”
No one could argue with that. The Doctor took your hand again, pressing a kiss to the back of your hand. You smiled, feeling very proud of yourself.
“I think you’re right,” the Doctor said to you, “I think you are a Disney princess.”
You blushed, hiding your face in her shoulder. She wrapped her arm around your shoulders, kissing the top of your head. You pressed a kiss to her neck and straightened up, trying to ignore the flush on your cheeks. She turned your head, kissing your lips quickly.
“You’re adorable,” she whispered, squeezing you.
“Oi, you two,” Yaz shouted, “save it for later.”
You blushed harder. You dropped back, picking up your canine friend. You buried your face in his fur and he yapped happily. The Doctor slid her arm around your shoulders, reaching out to pet the dog in your arms. You bit back a smile, ignoring the whistling from Ryan.
You really did love your fam.

Misfit au (visions from the future)
N/A: I like to play here with the idea of Kitty having the ability to see the future. Is it real or just the joke is taken too seriously?
@djinmer4 @sailorstar9 @dannybagpipesarecalling @discordsworld @look-ma-no-hands336 @bamfoftheundead
Vera Sweet stop her grimace at whatever Kurt Ryder was saying as the TV is on and people in the studio can take 30 minutes to laugh and forget they work for the most arrogant man in all New Gotham. "Ryder, shut up, your girlfriend´s show is on" and she didn´t forget how Cord´s eyes lit at this mention, albeit, with a certain melancholy.
Kurt promptly ignores this exchange in favour of looking at Kitty´s show. For once, the show won´t make fun of Journalism in New Gotham, which is a damn shame, if you ask Kurt Ryder, because he does like the version of Kurt Ryder Kitty makes.
_______________________________
The scene opens with Kitty Pryde and Chambers speaking political nonsense. After some time, discussing the nothing, a waitress appears to assistant them.
"Would you like "our politicians are corrupt" or "New Gotham is in the epicentre of every wacko"?" the waitress asked with the menu.
Chamber uses a hand signal to communicate and express the desire to eat real food, of course, the concept of real food can be a wild range of meanings.
"I want to eat a chicken" is what he said thanks to his hand sign language, however, chicken has several meanings.
"I´ll want ''our politicians are corrupt'' and a side entrance of ''mayor Green is an alien in disguise'' thanks" Kitty speaks and Chamber only communicates this line. "Eat here was your idea"
And the restaurant shows the punchline. Food for thought.
_______________________________ Mayor Green is in his office with his entourage as the TV Sketch is finally over. The mayor is letting a groan escape from his thin lips and in a whim, his white skin morphs to blue skin and soon the entourage follows suit.
"This is a problem," Kantique said in a low tone as her face is anything but pleasant.
"Kantique, this is just a human making joke. Nothing more or less. There´s no reason to worry" the minion/henchman or whatever was his rank was shoot dead by Kantique that has little patience today.
The others clearly see this now.
"You think I would care if this was just a dumb comedy show?" Kantique shows her fangs and is clear that the woman is enraged enough to become a beast. "This Kitty Pryde has made those jokes in the past and she is correct in all the assumptions"
And pressing the bottom on her desk. A TV shows up with the compilation of all Kitty´s scenes.
"Maybe mayor Green is resentful he can´t enter the beauty contest" which Kitty did reply "Or he is mad that he is a shapeshifter and shapeshifters aren´t allowed"
and
"Mayor Green is sad, let´s all sing the famous song of his home planet, Gravernox" everyone look at Kantique impressed as she continues to show Kitty´s jokes.
"You think an extraterrestrial life infiltrate the higher position of Earth to control our weapons and make possible assimilation and annihilation on our kind? Well, I would pick New Gotham to start"
"And there´s more" Kantique said bemused. "still think is a mere comedy show?"
"No, of course not, but, what do you want us to do?"
"If she has the vision of the future...we must treat this careful, a direct attack may blow our cover, however, we can be discreet. Mayor Green can play the part of the good sport very well and befriends her...if necessary, I will even bed her"
Someone mentions she has a boyfriend, but, Kantique waves off. "I can be anyone, anywhere. It does not matter"
______________________________________________
Kurt Ryder smiles amused as lately his girlfriend has making many jokes with mayor Green, truth to be told, Kurt Ryder does not like that man. Have meet once in the gala there´s something awful about him.
"Your cute girlfriend gives some crazy jokes, but, hey they entertain us" Vera answers as she goes back to her work pulling Cord along. Kurt thinks for a moment about the jokes.
Why she is always making jokes with Mayor Green?
________________________________________________________
Meanwhile, Kitty receives a note without any signature, and it was posted in her locked room without anyone noticing. The note has this message.
"Stop digging around or you will lose your head"
"What Am I digging around?"
Lorna knocked on her door with a big smile. "dear sister, rejoice, I have great news"
And Kitty notices something is off. "Yeah, what is the big news?"
"Mayor Green loved the jokes and wants to meet you for dinner" Lorna is smiling widely.
"Really? Then he could have the courtesy of showing up himself...also, you should have the courtesy of showing your own face"
Lorna stops smiling and said nothing for a moment. "Just follow me"
_______________________________
A few days later, JLX finds out that mayor Green is Kantique in disguise and who uncover this conspiracy? A comedian named Kitty Pryde.
"Look," Sparrow said to Dark Claw " is the second time one of her predictions come true"
"And she has got things wrong before," Logan said taking off his mask and turns to look at Jubilee with a deadpan expression, "she said I will be a father and grandfather at the same day"
Jubilee watches him go and gets a text of her boyfriend as he wants to ask her out to a romantic getaway. Meanwhile, Logan is receiving a similar call from one of his girlfriends.
#misfit au#kitty pryde#kurtty#kurt ryder#kitty has the gift?#Jubilee is dating Chamber here#Chamber is a mute cause I´m basing on Jericho#a few weeks go by and now Logan is starting to beleive Kitty has the gift

Gods and Monsters - 2 - Cruel World.
- part 1 is in my master list! -
Lanque Bombyx x Reader; SFW
You deal with the repercussions of post-pailing regrets and Lanque is a bitch.
Because you’re young, you’re wild, you’re free You dance in circles around me You’re fucking crazy Oh, oh You’re crazy for me
- Lana Del Rey
You bided your time with the Soleil twins after escaping the abandoned mansion together. Something told you that this was to be the end of your journey, and yet you were unwilling to come to terms with the depressing thought. So when the wilderness beckoned you to embark on another round of aimless wandering, you bit back the urge to answer its calls.
Barzum and Baizli were more than happy to distract you from your worries. Where once you shied away from them in fear, now you gleefully sat through their choreographed performances and entertained them in turn with stories of your adventures. You never imagined yourself to develop such a fondness for children, but all of the young trolls you had befriended sparked a bit of hope within you — no matter how bleak Alternian society might be, there were still remnants of innocence.
You wondered if the twins would have enjoyed Karako’s company. Did Bronya allow him to frequent his blood cast’s church?
Bronya. You should visit her soon; it’s been quite a while, and you have yet to check up on Lynera apart from the brief texts you exchanged during your stay with the twins. Perhaps you could play with the grubs — you needed to feel useful again.
Your body has been fairly useful. No. You were not going to think about that damn jadeblood.
You suggested a trip to the church in an effort to quell your ridiculous existential crisis. They were becoming embarrassingly frequent lately, and you could not afford to fall into a deep depression after having amassed so many wonderful friends. Why hadn’t you been relying more on them instead of flitting about like a social butterfly for superficial connections?
With a newfound determined attitude, you set off with the young trolls to find some sort of comfort in their strange religion. Chahut greeted you with a warm smile as you situated yourself on one of the rickety chairs and continued with her sermon. Barzum and Baizli were enthusiastically whispering to themselves about how much they had missed the church while trapped at the mansion, allowing you a moment of peaceful solitude. You leaned back in your chair and looked up at the multicolored ceiling, a light smile playing on your lips as you recalled hazy memories of a carousel, and falling into a blissful sleep with Karako in your arms.
A heavy thud came from the seat beside you. You tilted your head and saw Marvus’s easygoing expression staring back at you. “Waddup lil buddy, funny seein u here lol.”
You grinned in earnest now, happy to see your friend. And quite a handsome one, at that. “What can I say — this place just reels me in. I feel safe here, somehow.”
Marvus nodded slowly and patted your knee. “The mirthful messiahs b protektin us buddy.”
“Amen to that,” you replied, letting Chahut’s deep, droning gospel tether you to the moment.
The air was saturated with a sugary smell wafting from the purple candles on the altar. A tingling sensation creeped up your body, as though you wanted to join the other purplebloods in their honks and whoops at Chahut’s every word. You might be getting a bit high from the fumes.
Was it a sense of belonging that kindled the fire of elation within you? You felt like flying, reaching out past the colorful hues coating the ceiling to become one with the dark carnival all over again.
You have never felt more real.
Marvus’s comforting presence was all you needed in order to clear the fog of doubt that had plagued you. Somehow, you suspected he understood your place in the world far better than you did. Hadn’t he once talked about timelines and reality with you?
Or maybe you were too busy stuffing your face with food as he fed you, too captivated by his charm to really listen.
Wait, maybe you were remembering wrong. Marvus had definitely brought up the hemospectrum and the oppression of his cast.
You closed your eyes and slumped against him. Without question, his arm settled around your shoulders. You smiled to yourself and decided not to think about the past. There were new memories to be made, after all. And you had plenty of friends to make memories with.
-
Unfortunately, you would learn that new memories were to be made with trolls who were distinctly not your friends. One such person who had climbed his way to the top of the list was Lanque, and in a cruel twist of fate, you somehow managed to cross his path once more.
Your evening was supposed to be fun! Remele was hosting a party for highbloods to garner socialite points or whatever her reasoning had been; as soon as you heard about the dancing, you had stopped listening to details. Even your faux pas with regards to asking Tagora for fashion pointers had worked in your favor. He pampered you with a brand new dress and agreed to letting you use the iridescent lotion that had once made Galekh mistake you for a rainbow drinker, blushing all the while as he explained your mission — get some dirt on Remele to help him win his plagiarism case against her.
Would you do it? Would you sell out one friend in favor of another?
As you checked yourself out in Tagora’s full-length mirror, you decided to let luck guide your way. Since when have you ever been a planner, anyway. The furthest you’d gone with brilliant planning was to invite Stelsa with you, and boy did she squeal in glee at the offer. The two of you had taken great care in pampering each other at her home before heading out, and throughout your drive to Remele’s abode, you could not help grinning at how well things were going for you for once.
And here you currently found yourself, locked in a staring contest with Lanque from across the room. Oh, how lucky you were.
A bubbly ceruleanblood pressed close to him singlehandedly continued the conversation as he folded his arms and dragged his gaze along your body. He regarded you with the same distasteful sneer he threw at Lynera after roasting her. You hated how he managed to still look attractive with that sour face.
A passing partygoer broke the stare-off. When you managed to catch sight of him again, he was focusing all of his attention on his friend and blatantly ignoring you. Should you go confront him?
You chose to keep yourself busy instead. What good would it do to stir up complicated drama in the middle of a public event? Besides, you were trying to be classy for once in your life. You didn’t lather up your leg struts with Tagora’s elixir for nothing, after all. The old you, scavenging for scraps of clothing from dumpsters, was a thing of the past. Now, you were as close to presentable as you had ever been on this godforsaken planet, and damn it did you deserve a drink for all of your troubles.
Remele had excused herself some time ago to speak with Stelsa after the energetic troll had gone off on a ten minute tangent about loving her webcomic. Left by yourself and feeling uncharacteristically awkward, you made your way to a table with what you assumed to be refreshments, and reluctantly picked up the most appetizing drink available. It glowed a dull red hue and shimmered in the light. You prayed this wasn’t some sort of filtered blood before taking a small sip. A sharp fruity flavor coated your tongue, and you hummed in pleasure as you helped yourself to more.
“Careful there, don’t drink too much … lest you actually become un”. You peered over the lid of your cup. There he was, Lanque in all his bitchy glory, smirking down at you as the ceruleanblood clung to his arm and giggled at you with mortified curiosity.
You gripped your cup and sighed. “Hello, Lanque. Are we really doing this?”
His friend narrowed her eyes at you and haughtily asked, “Whaaat aaare you supposed to be? Aaa deformed lusus?” Lanque chuckled and earned a fawning look from her.
You rolled your eyes. “Never seen a rainbow drinker before, I take it.”
Her overdramatic gasp was music to your ears. But before the silly girl could hightail it out of the party, Lanque gripped her by the forearm and sneered, “Don’t be ridiculous. She’s the alien eVeryone’s been raVing about.” He cast a snooty look at you and added, "A Very underWhelming one.”
“Oh my, look aaat how red her faaace is turning! I caaan’t believe I missed spotting thaaat hideous blood, how silly of me!”
“See, darling? Underneath all that makeup, she’s quite the boring creature.”
If you held your cup any tighter, you might crush it. And spilling this presumably expensive drink all over your good friend’s flooring would hardly be appropriate, would it? You were not an uncouth person.
But you were not the most tactful person, either.
“How am I boring, exactly?” you asked through gritted teeth, loathing the fact that your height forced you to look up at his smirking, punchable, beautiful face. “You hardly know me.”
”Hardly?” A tittering laugh escaped him as he hid his cruel smile behind a hand. “As I recall it, We became fairly intimately acquainted, last We met.”
”Whaaat!” his friend shrieked, pulling at Lanque's arm with such gusto that his polished facade cracked into a displeased grimace. “Whaaat does thaaat mean, deaaar? You paaailed with this — this ugly thing?!”
“It Was certainly … a Very interesting experience.”
You thought you had grown accustomed by now to how repulsed most trolls were by your human physique. But Lanque had seen you at your most vulnerable, he had even seemed somewhat into you during your tryst, and now he had the nerve to mock you like this? You didn’t know whether to scream or cry. You chose to set down your drink on the table instead, ruefully looking away.
“The novelty of it all Wore off quite fast,” he continued, leering at you as he spoke. “She just Wasn’t that good — “
And suddenly, a very unfriendly retort tore its way out of you, like a sweltering bile of pent up anger that could no longer be contained.
“Like you were any better.”
Lanque’s smile faltered.
The flood gates broke open.
“Don’t you dare stand there and act all high and mighty, like you were some kind of blessing I squandered,” you hissed, stalking up to him with each bitter word. “You didn’t even get me off!”
A peel of snickering broke through the ensuing silence. Lanque stared down at you with such a blank expression that, for a split second, you wondered if your words were getting through to him at all. But the rising jade colored flush staining his cheeks, the contracted pupils and quickened breathing brought you a sickening sense of justice.
When had you become so aggressive?
“Was it because you didn’t feel like putting any effort into it?” you asked, secretly wishing for an answer. "Or because you’re so used to getting what you want that you don’t know how to care about anyone other than yourself?”
“Oh my …” the ceruleanblood whispered in a sing-song voice as she looked between you two, and you were seconds away from snapping at this invasive bitch before Lanque’s eyes flickered behind you, and a large hand settled over your shoulder.
“Hey there lil mama,” a familiar voice rumbled above you.
That smooth tone instantly lulled you into a happier mood. “Marvus,” you greeted with a smile, looking up at him and feeling your heart swell at his dopey grin.
“Wuz wondering if u’ll be bustin thiz shitshow,” he said, sticking his tongue out at you. “Now it’s a par-tayyy!”
You heard excited whispers in the distance — no doubt Lanque’s friend losing her cool over Marvus’s arrival. A small part of you desperately wanted to see Lanque’s reaction as well, but you were utterly done with him.
“I’m just here for the dancing,” you replied, ignoring someone’s rude scoff and focusing on how Marvus’s thumb ran circles along the divot between your neck and shoulder.
“ ♥ And you certainly look the part ♥ ,” another voice chimed in near you. A very unwelcome voice. The voice of someone who was arguably more horrible than everyone in this room combined.
You glanced at Zebruh as he winked at you and threw you a shark-like smile that chilled you to the bone. Oh, what wonderful friends you have. “Zebruh, th — thank you,” you stammered, inching backwards until you felt Marvus’s solid form against you. “What are you doing here?”
“My dear, I am a connoisseur of the arts, a true patron and supporter of Alternia’s most brilliant artist,” he raved, and turned his adoring gaze to Marvus. Knowing what you know now about how the purplebloods perceived him, you bit back a giggle. “ ♥ But when I found out Alternia’s greatest musician would be here as well, I simply could not resist making an appearance! ♥ “
“Aw thx lol,” Marvus quickly said. You could hear the strain in his voice, and decided to pat his hand gently. The poor man just could not catch a break from his crazy fans.
Lanque’s eyes followed your hand movement, much to your ignorance. His friend chose this precise moment to bounce up to Marvus in unrestrained glee, unable to hold in her excitement any longer. “I — I just — I waaannaaa saaay how much I love your work aaand aaand aaand I love you!” she cried out, gripping her hands together as though in prayer.
Zebruh was on her — and by association, Lanque — in an instant, sidling up between them. He tutted your name in displeasure and said, “Now, don’t be rude. ♣ Who are these two lovely guests? ♣ ” His hands settled on both of their shoulders, and they reeled back in opposite directions, with the ceruleanblood struggling to escape and Lanque baring his fangs in a wide snarl. You almost felt bad for him.
Get your fucking hand off — “
“Yo dog why don’t u keep ‘em bizzay while me and the lil shorty buzz off for a bit k thx,” Marvus butted in, and suddenly you were being lifted off the ground and cradled against his broad chest and your mind was short circuiting from the drama of it all. You love your clown friends so much.
You whispered a grateful thank you to your savior and peeked over his shoulder one last time. Lanque had managed to dislodge himself from Zebruh’s hold while the blueblood petulantly sulked off after the girl.
And when you finally met his hardened stare, you could have sworn a hint of color bloomed across his face once more. He must be really angry by now, you wondered as you were led away. Maybe you managed to make him jealous of Marvus for stealing you.
Yeah right, you sardonically thought. More like he was jealous of you for being swept up by a gorgeous highblood.
“U lookin’ fiiine tonite babe,” Marvus quietly said into your ear.
You looped your arms around his neck and smiled to yourself.

Dichotomy
Part 7
Author’s note:
You know what’s rare? Mallory smiling. By god, does she deserve it. She’s been through hell. Does it last? No, what’do think this is, American Happy Story?
“Hello, Mallory!”
Lydia strutted into Mallory’s room, pushing past a caught-off guard Rhoda.
Mallory stood, surprised, but pleasantly so, “Hi.”
Rhoda closed the door, eyeing the woman suspiciously.
“I didn’t expect to see you again,” Mallory told her as she was pulled into a hug. She didn’t return it, more so from shock than unwillingness.
She pulled back, “Well, I came to ask a favor, one that I think will be mutually beneficial.”
Mallory furrowed her brows, but nodded for her to continue.
“Mallory, fashion has always been my deepest passion in life, but I am so tired of these stuck up, socialite bitches who only know how to complain. I truly enjoyed making you a dress all those months ago, and well, I was hoping you’d be willing to be my muse. I’ve been feeling so stifled lately, and if I may say, you have this...innocent beauty about you, something very alien yet...real, genuine.”
Taken aback, she offered a shy, confused smile, “Thank you.”
Rhoda circled around behind Mallory, eyeing Lydia like a mama bear watching a hunter who’s gotten too close for comfort to her cubs. Mallory didn’t notice as Lydia flitted and touched her hair and face, “There’s just this...I don’t know, aura around you. Oh, please say you will, Mallory. You’ll have my eternal thanks.”
Mallory shrugged, having nothing to lose, “Sure. It’d be an honor.”
Lydia’s smile grew wider as she unloaded her bag onto the nearby counter, already off into rambling, “Perfect. Now I already have a couple designs in mind. Some are just everyday wear, and then there are some for balls and big events, we have those so often here...”
Rhoda stayed close to Mallory’s side.
* * *
Michael’s personal office was located on the first floor of the main complex, where the majority of the business side of the Cooperative was operated. It was, of course, the largest of them all, and the most grand. Rumor was it was modeled and inspired after The King’s Office in the Palace of Versailles; rich, detailed oak desk and cabinets, perfectly polished floors, almost like glass, gold an velvet decorating every surface, all bathed in warm light. Michael sat in his leather chair at his desk, a large French window framed by crimson curtains behind him. The artificial sunlight streaming in, casting a soft halo around his head. A stack of papers lay in his lap, but his interest in them was cursory at best. Every so often, he would take to tapping his finger on his chair’s arm, gaze far away.
“You haven’t been very talkative lately.”
Michael was drawn from his inner thoughts to look at Ms. Mead who had walked behind the desk, looking at him with a motherly concern.
“I never knew I was talkative,” he said pulling one side of his mouth into a small smirk.
She patted his shoulder, “I’m sure if I had more memories of you from before, I could contradict that.”
He reached up and placed his hand over hers, trying to hide the twinge of sadness in his eyes.
“Something’s on your mind,” she continued, walking around to sit in a small leather chair, “It’s that girl, isn’t it.”
He bit the inside of his cheek, but gave no response. He knew it was more of a statement than a question.
She leaned in, “Is she one of the witches who escaped?”
He nodded, “Yes, she must be. But...”
“What?”
He stood, walking to the window and staring out into nowhere, deep in thought, “There’s something else. She’s something else.”
Mead kept her gaze steadily on the back of his head, as if trying to read his mind. He liked keeping to himself, despite how he told her how close they were. It was as if something had once again separated them.
Perhaps he could sense that she’d lied at the Outpost.
She’d told him that she knew where her place was, by his side in this new world. That wasn’t true. She’d never felt more out of place than at this so-called Sanctuary. At the Outpost, things were simple and clear. Venable ran things strict, but efficient, and Mead was her right hand. Venable had been the closest thing to a friend she could remember, but at his command, she’d shot her dead. Here, she felt next to useless, she wasn’t in control of anything, and this entire place was run with too much bureaucracy. Mead often had passing thoughts that perhaps Michael hadn’t so much had a problem with how she had run the Outpost, but that she could have no real authority, and yet have such a tighter grip of control than he did. Mead kept these thoughts to herself, knowing that in the end she had no power to change things. Michael was still the beautiful boy, the idealized image in her mind of long forgotten, and cobbled-together rosy memories.
And perhaps that’s all she was to him as well.
“Did you ever notice any deformities on Mallory?” he asked, breaking the long silence, “Scars or birthmarks?”
She shrugged, “I never paid much attention to her at all. She never seemed all that special to me.”
He turned to face her, brow taught with curiosity, “Perhaps that was the point. To hide her in plain sight.”
* * *
Lydia had practically given Mallory a wardrobe to last a few months. An outfit for every occassion it seemed. Although the ensemble she wore today was probably one of her favorites. It was black, sheer in some places, draped over elegantly, decorated with silver stars and moons. She even had given her a little silver star hairpin. She stared at herself in the mirror, indulging her vanity briefly. She’d never owned anything designer before. It certainly felt more expensive than what she was used to.
“I feel like a...goth princess or something,” she told Lydia with a smile; who stood beside her, admiring her work.
“You certainly look like a princess.”
Rhoda slipped on a simple silver chain with a pearl pendant around Mallory’s neck. She looked Mallory up and down with a cautious smile.
“Well, twirl around!” Lydia encouraged, “Give us a fashion show!”
Mallory laughed and spun with a flourish, picking up the hem between her fingers and strutting around the room, much to Rhoda’s delight.
Lydia cheered, “Beautiful!”
Mallory leaned dramatically against the chair, throwing her hand over her head, “Am I a model yet?”
Rhoda clapped, feeling such joy at seeing Mallory smile.
She whirled out back into the middle of the room, “Coco would be so jealous--”
She stopped, her smile faltering. Rhoda’s heart sinking with it.
She looked at Lydia and said more quietly, “Thank you, Lydia. It’s beautiful. Everything you’ve made me is beautiful.”
She waved her off, “Oh, no, thank you. I haven’t had this much fun making clothes in over a year. You’re much easier to get along with than some of the others here.”
She began packing up her supplies, suddenly looking up and telling her, “You know, maybe you should be out and about today, show off to all these rich folks how beautiful you are.”
She nodded, the sadness obvious in her tone, “Thank you, Lydia.”
“Perhaps she’s right, Mi-Mallory,” Rhoda said as she closed the door behind Lydia, “You have been cooped up in here for so long. Maybe it would be beneficial to have a change of scenery? Some fresh air?”
Mallory gave her an incredulous look.
“And you do look lovely.”
She smiled, “Yeah, I guess I’ll have to learn to get around this place at some point. So, tell me, what’s there to do around here for fun?”
She paused to think, “There’s a theatre.”
“Of course there is.”
Rhoda laughed, “The Cooperative has a collection of nearly any movie you can imagine. Sometimes they hold special theme nights.”
Her eyes lit up, “What, like for Star Wars?”
She nodded, “Yes, I have heard of that.”
“Have you ever seen it?”
“No.”
Mallory’s jaw dropped, “You’ve never seen the Star Wars movies?”
She shook her head bashfully, “I’m afraid not. Not entirely. I’ve caught brief glimpses when I was delivering extra popcorn to the woman I served before you.”
“Which ones?”
“I...beleive the prequels.”
Mallory stood up, with a serious look, “Well, that settles what we’ll be doing for the day.”
* * *
Rhoda was fond over Mallory almost instantly when she entered the Sanctuary. Lydia was correct in that regard, she emanated an aura around her that instantly drew Rhoda to her; something so gentle yet powerful. It gave her a sense of peace, invigorating her, renewing energy. Yet, she could see that Mallory might’ve been giving off such effects without consequence to herself. She was sluggish, her skin had taken on a gray tone with the lack of light, she’d lost weight, not much, but enough to warrant Rhoda’s concern. She hadn’t looked like this when she arrived. Yet, it was as if the effects of the Apocalypse were only now pressing down on her; almost like a preservative energy had left. Rhoda tried her best to be a friend, even though she didn’t know how. She’d never been close to anyone, never beyond servant and master. No one had actually cared to learn her name like Mallory, just out of desire for human interaction; an effort to maintain sanity. That’s why Mallory saved Bartholomew, why she befriended Rhoda, she refused to lose herself, even after losing everything.
This made Rhoda’s betrayal all the more heinous in her own eyes.
Langdon had approached her barely a week after the incident at the Temple. She’d gone to fetch some food, in hopes that Mallory would at least try to eat something. She felt him approaching long before she saw him. Darkness and power followed him like a perfume, sharpening her senses. She bowed deeply without a word when he stood over her, frowning; not displeased, but grave in his intent.
“Look at me, Rhoda.”
She trembled at the way her name left his lips like a dark command. She shakily raised up to rest her gaze on his chest.
She gasped with fear when his fingers took her chin and forced her head up.
“In the eyes.”
“Yes, Lord Langdon,” she answered, her invitation for his will.
He smiled, but it was without joy. It was cold, inhuman. He dropped his hand.
“Were you present at the Temple the night of my return?”
He knew, of course he knew. He was daring her to lie.
“Yes, Lord Langdon.”
He nodded, “Then I’m certain you’re aware of the disturbance caused during the sacrifice.”
She don’t know why that prompted her start vomiting out words the way she did; perhaps paralyzing fear that he would do something to Mallory. Surely he knew it was her that was responsible.
She stepped closer, pleading, “Lord Langdon, Miss Mallory is deeply apologetic for disturbing the sacrifice. She swears she will never interfere again. And perhaps it was not her at all. Perhaps The Dark Lord was trying to communicate with you.”
His gaze was a dagger straight through her chest, his tone even more dangerous, “You dare to presume what my Father does and says to me?”
She violently shook her head, protesting, “No! My Lord, that wasn’t—“
He started stepping closer, backing her against a corner, eyes never straying from hers, “Does the slave think she knows more than the master?”
Tears pricked at her eyes, “Never, Lord Langdon.”
She was flat against a wall, shaking with terror.
“Has Miss Mallory’s influence planted a root of disobedience in you? Will corrections need to be made to curb your sudden defiance?”
Her muscles tensed as if she expected a slap, “No! No, my Lord.”
He brought his lips closer to her ear, his breath hot on her face, “If Miss Mallory’s head is stuck to a pike and displayed in the temple, will you be rid of your rebellion?”
A single tear escaped down her cheek, “No! No! I will obey, Lord Langdon! I will obey!”
He slowly stood up and backed away, looking her over cooly, “You will observe Miss Mallory and see if you can find any evidence of...unusual displays of power. Upon any discovery of such, you are to immediately report to me.”
She nodded, wiping away the tear, feeling like there was a sinkhole in her stomach, “Yes, Lord Langdon. It will be done according to your word.”
He turned to leave, saying with cold confidence, “Of course it will.”
