Hello! First time requesting anything...may I request a jealous Jiro? 👉🏻👈🏻 Or a Jiro that is experiencing "jealousy" for the first time? I like the idea of MC also taking care of Lyca and doting over him since she's supposed to be his "guardian." Perhaps Jiro noticed that MC spends way too much time with Lyca and babies a lot. Then Jiro just gets a weird feeling in his chest and gut. Honestly, it would be so great if Lyca had to go to Mortkraken for some type of injury and Jiro Is straight up glaring at him or rolling his eyes over how "dramatic" Lyca is and how much MC is catering to his needs.

It is a nice, regular Tuesday...

Well, almost regular, given how you weren't there.

Jiro stares blankly at the empty seat beside him. He pushes up his glasses, even though they are already pushed all the way up, and blinks blankly at the sight. Whatever content it was that the professor was explaining, Jiro could not bother to hear a thing.

The lecture was nearly over, so there was no way you were going to show up now. You weren't on a mission, unless you got summoned last minute (but you usually tell him when that happens). So why weren't you there?

If he knew you weren't going to show up he would have simply stayed in Mortkranken. It's not like he needed this lecture in the first place, he could have just read through the textbook in his own time.

Everyone begins to exit the room, signaling to Jiro that the lecture is over and pulling him away from his thoughts. He follows suit. Walking through the vast halls of Darkwick and making his way through the crowded stairs to the courtyard.

Should he text you to make sure you are alright? he is your doctor, after all... No, he should go to your dorm to see. This is because you might be sick or in pain, it's his responsibility to check up on you and Yuri might get angry if he doesn't, and-

oh.

You are sat on a bench, laughing deeply with your hand covering your mouth; swaying back and forth in a fit of laughter with your eyes shut and your face reddened. He can't help but crack a brief smile at the sight of you so happy, but then he sees the source of your laughter; a vaguely familiar face; Lyca Colt.

Jiro stops in his tracks over a slight pain in his chest.

You've told him about Lyca and your eagerness to help him assimilate with others before, but, when he sees Lyca shoving your elbow while saying something with a pout, and when you tap his silver hair lovingly as a response. Jiro can't help but confirm his suspicion that you are like that with everyone. That when you pat his head, or when you wrap your hands around him, you do it because that is how you show friendship, and not because you want to pat his head or wrap your hands around him.

You notice Jiro, but you don't notice his frozen stance and perplexed expression, and you wave him over with a warm smile, as if everything is normal and nothing happened.

But when Jiro is finally stood in front of you, you don't get up to hug him because Lyca growls at the sight of the looming intruder, and if you didn't grab his soft arm to quickly to tell him "It's okay, Lyca, Jiro is a friend." who knows what he would end up doing.

The pain in Jiro's chest spreads to his stomach, but why? If you are like that with everyone, than it doesn't matter, right?

"Oh, well, you're very tall." Lyca nods at Jiro.

Jiro does not respond.

"Jiro?" you ask.

"You weren't in class today, we have a test next week." Jiro says matter-of-factly.

"Oh-" you say, "I promised to help Lyca with a task and-"

Jiro hums and nods... something is wrong with him, he knows it. He coughs in response, feeling something tighten in him in a sharp, uncomfortable manner that is difficult to describe, something has to be wrong. "I-"

"Are you okay?" you ask, your tone worried and you hand reaching out to him, but Lyca grabs onto your hand with a questioning look.

"Something is wrong, I need to go to Mortkranken." Jiro manages to say.

Now is the time for you to say that you will help him get there. Then you will walk beside him and let him lean on you for support, and then when you reach his dorm you will make sure he is fine and stay beside him for the entire day... You are about to say something, and begin to rise from your seat, but you are stopped by Lyca once more.

"Hey!" he pouts, "You can't go, you said you'll stay until we're done."

The feeling in Jiro's stomach speaks for him, "I'll go alone, it's alright."

You give him a sympathetic look but he's gone before you can say anything else.

Yuri checked Jiro over, listening to his heart rate, taking his blood pressure, making sure he is breathing well, but nothing was off with him, he was just as good as he gets. So they just got to work on some diagnostic tests or whatever.

The pain in Jiro's chest did not go away, in fact, it got worse, and he began to see flashes of you and Lyca on the bench, laughing. He must be feeling good then, because when he thinks of you, he feels good. That's a simple response he has learnt to understand. But he doesn't feel good. He feels, bitter and he is unable to focus on the task at hand.

"Yuri," he asks, "What's that emotion where you feel something soft that is also sharp?"

"What?" Yuri responds, shooting up from his seat and staring at Jiro with a confused look, "What are you talking about, Jiro?"

"I appear to be having an unfamiliar neurophysiological response to an unknown stimuli, but it is quite difficult to catagorise as either pleasent or unpleasent."

"I wouldn't know, Jiro." Yuri states, "Ignore it."

"Alright."

And so he does, but it doesn't go away.

A few hours pass, and you suddenly walk through the doors to the lab with Lyca drapped over your arm.

"Jiro? Yuri?" you call out.

Jiro is out of sight, but he hears you first, his posture immediately straightening and that pang of emotion reignating in full capacity. He is quick to appear from around a corner, leaning on the doorframe with a gentle smile on his face. You came to check up on him, you probably waited so impatiently for whatever task you were doing to end so you could see him again, you-

"oh." he says out loud.

Lyca is groaning in pain, digging his face into the nape of your neck as your arm holds his back with a careful intent.

"Jiro-kun," you call out, "Lyca got attacked by one of the cats, could you take a look at the scratch on his face?"

"Yes." Jiro's voice is emotionless and dry, and his eyes scan you over from the place your hand rests on Lyca to your expression, which, believe it or not, he can't read just as you can't read his.

Jiro mutters something under his breath, it's inaudible, and you can't make out if he is searching for something or is otherwise upset.

You help Lyca sit on the operation table, moving to the side as Jiro slides a fresh pair of black gloves onto his hands and goes over to check up on Lyca, whom he is examining with a squint.

"You're a werewolf, correct?" he asks as he roughly grabs Lyca's face, rotating it around to see the reddened scratch marks on his cheek, "then how do you get attacked by a cat?"

"Yeah, aren't you also some kind of monster? I heard people call you Frankenst-"

"Lyca!" you stop him, "that's not polite."

"But- I was just curious" the werewolf pouts, crossing over his hands, "it's always so hard to know what isn't polite."

Jiro continues to examine the scartches, squinting his eyes at them as he replies, "It's fine, I'm not a monster, no, but I am very strong."

"He is-" you begin, but are interrupted by Lyca,

"I'm also very strong, I can pick MC up with one hand."

You're sure he means no harm, he truly never does, but his tone sounds challenging, and makes your eyes dart to Jiro as you take note of his seemingly angered state. He stands straight, showing off his true height, and towering over the room. The cause of his anger is hard to place, but it worries you nonetheless.

Nonchalantly, Jiro states, "You got attacked by a cat."

Jiro might not be a monster, but he does feel like one over the feeling in his chest; which has grown into an ugly sort of mass that makes him feel... upset? It has to be the feeling of upset, because Jiro feels something in his strong arms as well, as if something is trying to move him and grab you just to hold you there, away from everyone else, where only he can have you. But you wouldn't like it, right? He's too rough and scary, that's what everyone always says, and you probably also think that, because why wouldn't you? You would cry if he picked you up and took you away, right? He knows this, he knows himself and that he wants you to feel safe, so why is he hearing these thoughts that tell him to place you in his hold and not let you go?

"Jiro, are you alright?" you stand close behind him and ask, once again concerned when you notice how tense he has gotten. He smirks, very, very slightly, and turns around to grab a jar of cotton rounds on the shelf behind you. Instead of asking you to move, he wraps a hand around your waist and simply picks you up and places you three steps to the left.

"Of course." he nods, leaving you to blink in confusion and returning with the jar and placing a cotton round on Lyca's wound, at which Lyca yelps, and Jiro asks, "Does this sting?"

Lyca responds to you, "He looks fine to me." and ignores Jiro's question.

Jiro doesn't respond further, instead, he continues to tend to Lyca's wound, placing a band aid over it after making sure it is cleaned properly.

"MC?" Lyca calls for you, and you are quick to appear at his side as Jiro raises an eyebrow ever so slightly. The werewolf droops his head onto your shoulder, whimpering quietly.

"Are you alright, Lyca?" you say, placing a hand on his shoulder.

Lyca raises his head and looks up at you with a pout, his eyes big and bright, "Could you take me back to Obscuary? I don't want to deal with that moth-eaten casanova..."

That's it. Jiro can't stand it anymore, he doesn't even know what "it" is but he just can't do it.

"No." he answers.

"Who asked you-" Lyca begins.

Jiro feels wrong, he has no idea what has gotten into him to get him to say that out loud, so now he is burdened with finding an excuse as you look at him with a confused expression. The last thing he wants is to scare you, and if he doesn't find a good excuse now, he probably will.

"I- hm, we, - erm, has to- hm, study with me." he manages.

You are about to burst out laughing at Jiro's odd behaviour, but you hold yourself together and decide to help him instead, "Yeah, I promised to study with Jiro tonight, I can call Suba to come get you?"

Jiro's eyes widen at your answer and whatever feeling he has thanks you for collaborating with his lie.

"Oh, well, you said you can't back down on a promise, so that's alright with me." Lyca nods.

Before he even exits the room to meet Subaru outside, you are dragged by the hand over to Jiro's dorm.

The tall ghoul walks in front of you without any expression, pulling you even though you walk behind him willingly. He appears rather distant, as if something has washed over him, and you are worried.

Once you are in his dorm room, he is quick to close the door and for a moment he towers over you with your back to the wall, trapping you in place as he breathes heavy, reaching out a hand to lock the door. You look up at him with a warm face, unsure what is happening, but before you can react, he apologizes and finds himself in the other side of the room, sitting by his work-desk.

"Jiro," you walk over to him, noticing how he buries his face in his hands, "What's wrong?" sliding your hands over his back, your tone is comforting and worried.

"I-" he tries, "I feel strange."

You go to sit in front of him on the chair he has brought over a few weeks back especially for you to be able to study with him.

Jiro faces you now, and you realize just how perplexed he appears, his nose scrunched slightly, and his eyes squinting in an attempt to focus on something internal that is out of your sight. "Strange how?" you ask, smiling gently at him.

"Yuri didn't know, but, what is the emotion where you feel soft but also sharp?"

"I don't know." you laugh, "Maybe, if you try to figure out what made you feel it, it would make it easier to understand?"

He nods, concentrating onto his own self, trying to find the right words to describe it. He realizes then how guilty he feels over dragging you there with him and for whatever he feels, which, as he knows now, is 100% because of you, but he doesn't know why or how.

"It's," he tries, "Well to start, I feel the need to be in your physical proximity."

"I'm here." you reassure, chuckling kindly.

"Closer." he shifts in his seat.

With a warmed face, you clear your throat and rise from your seat, standing beside him and allowing him to guide you down to sit on his lap. When you do, he attempts to be gentle with his hands and to move your hair to the side so that the side of your neck facing him is bare, you flinch slightly. "Why do you do what I tell you to?" he asks, almost fearful that he is making you do something against your will.

"Because I want to." you nod.

"Oh." he looks away, "are you sure?"

"Yes," you chuckle, "are- you alright, Jiro?"

He nods, "Have you- hm. It feels like, if I had something, and then someone else took it? does that make sense? it doesn't feel like it makes sense."

It doesn't really, because you are unsure what he is talking about. But the way he shakes ever so slightly as he looks up at you, and the way his gaze focuses on your neck, makes you think you know what he means, "Jiro, are you jealous?"

Jealous. Is that what it's called to want to hold you close and mark you in all possible ways so that anyone who looks at you knows you're his? But you're not his, and he isn't the type to get jealous. He is the type to scare you into sitting on his lap and to scare you into coming back to him, he isn't gentle, and he isn't comforting, and he isn't anything that can make you happy... and now he is jealous over you being happy -- over something so minor?

"You're not mine, and I-" he says.

"But I am yours." you confess, wrapping your hands over his neck, "and you don't need to feel jealous, I might hug Lyca, but I wouldn't sit on him like this."

His eyes go wide, "You are... mine?" you can see the wheels in his head turn and let out smoke as he tries to solve some sort of puzzle you can't place, "But, I don't own you, you can do what you want, I don't want to feel like this."

There are many reasons why he said it; the first being that he does mean it, he doesn't feel like he owns you, you are in control of yourself. However, he does want you to be his and no one elses, and he does want to keep you here forever, but he should redirect that to something else, just to be sure.

As if reading his thoughts, you say "There's a way to make it go away."

"Really? what is i-"

You stop him with a kiss.

He doesn't move at first.

But then something clicks in his brain and he grabs onto you with restrained force, pulling you by the neck and waist to kiss you with all of the pent up emotions he can't describe.

He breaks the kiss just to tell you, "You're mine." it is a confirmation of your own words from before, but also a statement.

And when you grab his hair and pull him in deeper, and cause his glasses to slide up his nose and misalign, he truly feels that it is true, so now all that is left is to break the kiss again and soften the skin of your neck with breathy kisses.

"Ji-Jiro?" you whimper, "What are you doing?"

He chuckles into you, sending vibrations through your body, as he begins to suck large marks into your neck, which will in no doubt be visible for weeks to come, "Making sure everyone else can tell."

Firstly, thank you much for the ask @velox-the-knight. I thought I’d do one better and write a short one shot fanfic on this. But I’ve tweaked the facts a little. I’ve made it so that they’re both 28 (23 feels a bit too early for someone like Max to marry idk?) and I’ve not made it on her birthday. But I’ll hope you’ll like this!

FAIRYTALE

The path to the dojo was covered in chrysanthemums and a young, blithe man strolled down the road, inhaling the fresh scent of spring into his lungs in the hopes that it would inspire him to finally pop the big question. The golden strands of his hair mirrored the bright beams of the radiant sun above, and twenty-eight-year-old Max Mizuhara strode into his best friend’s house with every ounce of his courage tucked away in a little black box in his pocket. Today was the day that he would ask her to marry him.

The familiar, idyllic setting of Takao’s house greeted him at the entrance and comforted him as he tried to pull himself together and calm his nerves. The oddly mature words of wisdom of his precocious younger sister, Charlotte, surfaced in his mind – if you know she’s the one, then she is. If she’s not, you can move on to other things. Like buying me a Playstation.

His eyes scanned the dojo. He half hoped that Daichi would not spring out of some corner with a bowl of soup in his hand and ruin the bouquet of wild flowers that Max was carrying, by tripping and falling over some rock as usual. Max’s mother, Judy, had not appreciated Daichi’s clumsiness when he had all but destroyed her immaculate designer pantsuit by spilling a drink on it by accident.

I can’t believe that I brought flowers, he thought to himself amused. Max had never really been the flowers-and-chocolates type of boyfriend. Romantic gifts were more of Rei and Takao’s domain. Mariam and Max had always had a jovial, easy-going relationship. They did many things together – from trekking to mountaintops and sleeping under the stars together, to skydiving and dancing at carnivals to which Raul and Julia often invited them. But romantic cliches had never been something that either of them was particularly fond of.

Growing up with parents who rarely lived in the same city, Max had never had the occasion to watch any romance blossom between them. Family dinners were often a cold affair, with his mother being an emotionally distant workaholic and his father being in blissful denial about the crumbling state of their marriage. Even as things had improved between his parents after he had won his first world championship, Max’s faith in romance and marriage had forever been marred by the shadow of his childhood in a dead home.

Yet, here he was, ready to ask the love of his life to marry him, with flowers no less. The irony was not lost upon him.

Oddly, it was his two friends Kai and Hiromi who had suggested that he take flowers with him as he proposed to her. Max could swear he almost choked on his drink as he heard those words leave Kai’s mouth. It made him wonder if, in private, Kai had actually ever given his nature-loving boyfriend Brooklyn any flowers. The thought of a romantic Kai seemed almost as inconceivable to him as the thought of Yuri and Takao’s errant brother Hitoshi hooking up. But stranger things had happened in their world – Balkov becoming a reality show star, for one. He certainly gave the Kardashians some stiff competition in the vanity department. Yuri almost retched at seeing Balkov’s vainglorious Instagram account.

Chuckling, Max looked down at his bouquet as the memory of his last conversation with his friends popped up in his mind.

“You listen to me Maximilian Mizuhara…”

“Actually, it’s just Max,” said Max, cutting her short, meekly.

“Did I say that you could interrupt me?” growled Hiromi, rolling her eyes. “Now, as I was saying…you have to get her flowers! You can’t propose without flowers to a woman who has been raised in the mountains in the lap of nature. Back me up, Hiwatari!”

Kai put down his drink on the table and shrugged. “You heard the woman.”

“You can’t be serious,” said Max, surprised. “And what if she does not like flowers?”

“Then you can take off your clothes and hope that she forgets about the flowers when she sees you in your magnificent birthday suit,” said a drunk Takao, laughing at his own joke without a care in the world.

“Takao!” said Hiromi, smacking him lightly on his head.

“Ow, what was that for?” said Takao, crossly.

“Your jokes are getting worse every day. Soon you’ll give Ivan a run for his money and that is not a compliment. Ask Yuri and Boris. They had to make a jar specifically for him in which he has to drop a penny every time he makes a terrible joke. There was enough money in it by the end of the year for Yuri to buy Julia a gift pack from Victoria’s Secret and have money left over for Boris and Sergei to go drinking expensive wine at Ralf’s vineyard. Do you want me to make such a jar for you too?” said Hiromi, narrowing her eyes.

“If it helps get you your favorites from Victoria’s Secret, why not,” said Takao, playfully.

Hiromi blushed and pretended to text on her phone.

“Okayyyy, get a room you two,” said Rei, laughing.

“Alright, guys, can we deal with my problem before Mr. World Champion here starts his drunken monologue? Is it yay or nay on the flowers? Won’t it be too cliched for Mariam to appreciate?” said Max, frowning.

“Make it so that it isn’t,” said Kai, in a deep voice.

 Make it so that it isn’t. I hope I’m doing this right.

Max walked further into the dojo to see Mariam sitting on the porch, with her long blue strands of hair casually tied up on top of her head in a bun. She was dressed in a white shirt and red skirt, while a tattoo of Sharkrash on her smooth, porcelain skin glimmered under the light of the sun. Max gasped as he watched his beautiful girlfriend concentrate on the book that she was reading, one that Max instantly recognized as his favorite, personal copy of Bitches Gotta Beyblade. Ming Ming had written quite the tantalizing but wonderful biography of her life as a beyblading and singing sensation – and though Max had initially found her annoying during her BEGA days, he had come to admire her over the years. Juggling school and Beyblade while winning Grammys every year was no mean feat.

As Max stepped into the garden by the little pond, Mariam lifted her face from her book and looked at him with a smile on her face.

“Maxie. What’s up? Why are we meeting at the dojo when neither Takao nor grandpa are here? Feels a little weird,” said Mariam, suspiciously.

“Weird? Why is that? We’re always hanging out at the dojo on weekends,” said Max, hiding the bouquet behind his back.

“You know…like we’re trespassing or something while he’s not around,” said Mariam.

“Trespassing? Did your conscience prick you like this when you were stalking me day and night to seal my bit-beast?” teased Max.

“For the last time Max, I wasn’t stalking. I was just gathering intel,” said Mariam, feigning annoyance.

“Alright, Mata Hari, pipe down,” quipped Max. “Ozuma can’t hear you, you know. We both know that you couldn’t get enough of me.”

“Oh yeah, and who was the one putting on all the moves in a collapsing building? Seriously Max, who flirts when they’re almost about to get crushed by a building?” said Mariam, playfully.

“Guilty as charged, m’lady,” said Max, laughing.

Mariam uncrossed her legs and leaned against a wooden pillar casually. “What have you got behind you?”

A romantic cliché, that’s what.

“Hmm, let’s see,” said Max, pulling out the bouquet and presenting it to her.

“Flowers…” said Mariam, surprised.

“Not just any flowers,” said Max, handing her the bouquet.

Mariam looked more closely at the bouquet and Max could see her face lighting up.

“Orchids…from my village in the mountains…” said Mariam, looking touched.

Max knew that Mariam missed her village frequently. Even though she quite liked her life as a marine biologist, free from the shackles of her tribe’s strict and conservative rules, Max often found her wistfully longing for the mountains that she called her home. He knew that if flowers were the way to go, he would personally write to Yusuf and request him to send them to Japan, where he and Mariam were living temporarily after taking a sabbatical from their jobs in California.

“What…what’s the occasion?” said Mariam.

Oh boy, here goes.

“Well…I don’t know how to do this…” mumbled Max, as he slipped his hand into his pocket.

Mariam watched him curiously as he pulled out a little black box.

“Oh…my…” said Mariam, intuitively, the minute that she laid her eyes on the box. “Are you asking me to…”

Max stared at Mariam, unsure about how to proceed with it. He stood quietly staring at her for a solid two minutes until Mariam said, “Uh…Max?”

Kneel, you moron. You can gawk at her later, thought Max as he mentally slapped himself, before going down on one knee.

“Mariam…I never thought that there’d come a day that I’d find myself asking you…or anyone, to marry me. I have never believed in fairytale endings or happily ever-afters. And I don’t believe that being with you is my fairytale ending, because nobody knows what the future holds. But you certainly are the beginning of my fairytale. Now I wish I had Rei’s eloquence to be able to come up with a romantic poem on the spot, but that’s not me. I’m all smiles and jokes and mustard on noodles and we have had always had an unconventional relationship. So, in the spirit of that…” said Max, opening the box, mid-sentence.

Okay, here goes nothing.

Much to Mariam’s surprise, Max pulled out a red, silken bandana from the box and tied it around her forehead.

“I could have got a ring…and I will after this, but I don’t do cliches. Now, I’m 14 years late, but here’s a long overdue replacement for the bandana you tied around my arm when I injured myself protecting you in that collapsing building. I’m tying this around your forehead as a promise to protect you for as long as I can, no matter how many buildings collapse on us and no matter what hurts me in the process. So…will you…marry me?” said Max.

Mariam gasped. She looked like someone had punched her in the gut.

“You know, Takao’s garden has just been hosed an hour ago. My jeans are getting soaked in the mud. Could you answer faster?” said Max, sheepishly.

“Well…yes, you idiot!” said Mariam, throwing her arms around Max and hugging him tenderly.

Kissing her softly on the cheek, Max pulled away and looked into her gorgeous green eyes. He had spent many a night looking into them, but this was the first time that he had seen a touch of vulnerability in them. If anything, her eyes looked even more beautiful now.

“Oh, that was so fucking cute, I’m going to faint!”

“Hell yeah, go Maxie!”

“Max, you dawg…”

Shocked, Max and Mariam looked to the left to see their friends peering at them from behind the dojo and giggling amongst themselves. Kai and Brooklyn did not seem to partake in their laughter, but smiled approvingly at him and Mariam.

Letters from Heaven: haikyuu!!, kagehina, 60k

this fic was written for last year’s kghn big bang and it was so fun! It’s the longest thing I’ve written yet, and boy oh boy it was such a challenge to juggle a bunch of different things that I hadn’t done on this kind of scale before, like longer character arcs and, especially given that this is a violet evergarden AU, describing things in a way that fits with kyoani’s style and VibeTM. My last longer fic, thy kingdom come, was about half this length and almost made the list simply because of how bonkers it was (like I hadn’t written at all that year and suddenly signed up for a big bang and then had to take a month long break in the middle because of school stuff, and then boom I ended up writing the latter half of it a few days before the deadline LOL), but anyway. It’s not perfect (nothing is!) but it’s chock full of recurring metaphors and long-winded descriptions about the sky and pining out the wazoo (basically: all wildly self-indulgent things catered to me and me alone) and I love it all the same. (also bajillion thanks to janine for this one heh she is to blame for most of my kghn madness)

okay this one almost went to my other killugon fic again bc everything I write is so self-indulgent but!! this fic is probably one of the few fics that I set out to write very intentionally? that sounds weird, hmm how to explain. I tend to write fic mostly to let out Emotions but tbh it’s so much easier and way more fun for me to do that through reading other people’s works--less work for me to read abt my faves than to write them, after all! so most of what’s on my profile before this fic is exactly that: I sat down at like one in the morning with my notebook and fever-dream scribbled out a oneshot that I spent maybe the next two or three days typing up, reading over once, and then yeeting it up onto the archive. but not with this fic! I had already written my Vent fic for the boys in question, but my goals with this fic were more deliberately geared towards examining and changing up my approach to writing: 1) I really wanted to explore gon after the world tree and what his healing might look like, but gon is Really Hard for me to write (the boy is so!! ARGHSLKDFJ). So: deeply inhabiting unfamiliar character pov practice. Asking myself, after every single line of dialogue and event and inner monologue, how this character would react and why. How will this impact their next action? How will it impact their relationship with this other character? How about this? and this? and so on and so forth 2) I wanted to find a balance with my metaphors on both a sentence by sentence and an overarching basis (I tend to just go for the first--I can’t help it I love purple-y prose jslkdfj). 3) Time!! I also went a lot slower with this one. Every night for over a month, writing a little bit at a time in my notebook. And I found that going slower...is actually really nice? Takes a lot of the stress away. tldr; this fic was basically one long exercise in me examining my writing (also ngl my creative writing professor’s feedback on my work for class really kickstarted this LOL) and boy oh boy was it satisfying to see it posted when I finished. I learned a lot! Also I got some of the kindest comments that made me tear up, which was so wonderful. god this got long okay moving on.

your heart, bright heart: natsume yuujinchou, tanunatsu & gen, 7k

after over a year of quarantine I’ve read more fic than I ever have in my LIFE and I have figured some stuff out about what makes me go absolutely bonkers, writing-wise. this fic was an attempt, after several months of reading literally hundreds of fics across dozens of fandoms and relationships and pairings (like geeze! hxh, run with the wind, hq, yuri on ice, the great pretender, ouran highschool host club, snk, mdzs, final fantasy xv, and yes natsuyuu too LOL), an attempt at making myself go bonkers, if you will. and I still can’t quite put my finger on what it IS but I know it has something to do with the naming of things. like an author will Name a Thing, very specifically, whether it is an action or a character thought or something very simple about the environment--and that something speaks volumes about the character and their relationships and the core themes of the series and it’s like. it’s like there’s a moment of understanding between that character and the reader, an oh! I know what that means. it’s wonderful and I’m butchering the explanation here but anyway. I still have no idea how to do this myself yet but goddammit I’m gonna get there one day. This fic was my first attempt in the Naming of Things. idk if there are any oh! moments in it myself, but natsuyuu is the perfect series for the kind of quiet that I think you need for those small moments. 

holy SHIT this got long uh. if you’ve made it this far--thank you?? this was also useful for me to articulate what the hell I’m doing in hamsterland. Recently a visiting poet came to one of my classes at university and talked about language-making as a physical art. Language has a physical existence, she said; it leaves the body and enters another and causes a physical reaction in both speaker and listener. She talked about how writers are creators of physical things, and how writing is mostly thinking before the creating. The physicality of language. To say it made me lose my marbles is an understatement!! tldr; there’s so much inspiration everywhere, and I wanna write more!!! So I’m gonna!!

finally. i decided to do this. anyways hello there, i am jake and today i want to talk about something; you see, if you are in the tf2 fandom, you probably know about heavymedic. Wherther you are a hardcore gamer who resents f2p’s or a person that never played the game but has trillions of notes on their art- you know heavymedic exists and most of all you probably ship it.

And I find that weird. In the few fandoms in my life I have been in I had never seen a single ship be so widely if not shipped, then accepted. Sure, maybe everyone in the GF fandom knows what Billdip is - for better or for worse. Sure, maybe the HS fandom is 70% shipping.

But I have never ever seen such a phenomenon in a prominent multiplayer game fandom. A fandom, sadly, oftentimes filled with toxicity. Overwatch is very similar here - yet ships are either a hot topic of discussion or straight up ignored. But TF2? In here for whatever reason we ship these two mercenaries. And in this essay I will try and find a reason or two why is that.

Apologies for any mistakes or incoherency. English is not my first language, I need to ramble, and my vocabulary is all over the place.

Content warning: mentions of homophobia, blood, death, mentions of WLW fetishization, nsfw mention. Also MASSIVE SPOILERS FOR THE TF2 COMICS.

Part 1: Canonical Evidence and Interactions

Let’s be honest: I could ramble about this one for days on end. But I’ll try and keep it short.

First and foremost we have the official videos. And of course the first thing that comes to mind is Meet the Medic.

At the very start of the part where Medic himself appears, we see him telling a joke about a particularly gruesome situation to Heavy.

He laughs along with him, visibly enjoying his company. He even smiles as he waits for another joke. Heavy only shows genuine fear a lot later.

And of course this damn scene always cracks me up. Medic slightly pinches Heavy’s cheek and strokes his lip gently (the other part is almost not noticeable unless you play the video at slow speed).

Of course we all know about the Hand Hold that happens somewhere halfway in the vid. I don’t think I have to explain the gayness in that. The fact their hands stay interlocked even after Medic helps Heavy up. The deep breath Medic takes because even he cannot handle the emotions. That few seconds is unresolved sexual tension manifest.

Overall the short shows a strong feeling of trust between these two. Medic confides in Heavy and reverse. Yeah he puts a baboon heart into his friend’s chest cavity but the fact (as proven at the end of the video) that Heavy was the first one to have an Ubercharge implanted into him shows that Medic at the very least considers him a lab rat.

I treat End of the Line as non-canonical, as do many others, and as such won’t discuss it here. But it will forever crack me up that Valve endorsed such levels of homoerotic subtext.

These two have some short moments in other videos, like for example in Invasion Heavy helps Medic up (CINEMATIC PARALLELS) but it’s nothing major so I guess I’ll skip forward.

Second is their interactions ingame. You might call me a weirdo for trying to find stuff in there but holy shit I have things to say and I’m going to say them.

You thought I was going to fanboy over the “i love this doktor” voiceline huh? Well not really. I wish these two had unique lines if they assist one another.

Heavy is literally listed on the official wiki as the “ideal medic buddy” and multiple pages on that exact wiki say some pretty interesting things.

I have to say something about the Gentleman’s Ushanka and/or Pocket Medic. They are both community cosmetics - but the fact they both got accepted by Valve says a lot. Above is text snipped from the actual wiki.

Last but not least: The Comics. Darned comics. The pair of mercenaries has basically no interaction - unless you count issue 6.

Heavy getting absolutely PISSED when Medic is killed by Ch*avy. Their reunion. Medic referring to Heavy by “my friend” in a totally straight way. Kind of sad Valve wasted an opportunity for them to hug. Maybe they knew their comic artist ships them and wanted to avoid having to answer the Question™.

Part 2: Dynamics

This part’s a bit trickier, mostly due to the reason that I’m new to this whole dynamic analysis thing. Yeah I’m good at spotting canonical evidence but very specific shipping dynamics often escape my gaze.

The most obvious one is Big Guy, Little Guy. Quoting the TVTROPES page:

[…] This trope describes a pair of guys who always fight together, are best friends forever, and quite often have a very obvious hierarchy: The little guy is often in charge […] The little guy is usually listed first, since he’s the leader, and they are always listed together, as if they are one entity. In fact, some episodes may center on the fact that they can’t live without each other. […] If this is a case of Brains and Brawn, the Big Guy is usually the Brawn, and the Little Guy the Brains. It’s almost never the other way around, but in some cases the Big Guy can be rather smart too. […]

A sub-type of this, a common favorite here on Tumblr is known as “small chaotic big calm” and hoo boy if that isn’t these two. I don’t really have much to say here - again I am not an expert.

Part 3: Fandom Impact

So you don’t think Red Oktoberfest (as Heavymedic is sometimes called) is super popular on anywhere else than Tumblr? Wrong.

It’s hard to find TF2 fics on Archive of Our Own not tagged with Heavy/Medic. Of course most of them only contain hints to their relationship but go in the main tf2 tag and I can guarantee you, you’ll gonna see “implied heavy/medic” all the time.

But these two go further than AO3 or Tumblr or Instagram or whatever. They are recognized even within the wider circle of the fanbase. Take this SFM, for example. (I am using the Saxxy Awards version of Secret Lives here mostly due to the fact that the Heavymedic moment is much gayer. In the normal version, the dialogue isn’t changed, but they simply hold hands.)

But it gets deeper. (WARNING: THE GAY MOMENT IN THIS ONE IS NSFW. NOT EXPLICITLY SO BUT JUST A HEADS UP TUMBLR PLEASE DO NOT FLAG ME)

And the best part? The comments are extremely positive. You’d expect hoards upon hoards of homophobes screeching but no, the comments are supportive. Even on places such as Reddit or Youtube, comments like “yeah they’re gay and in love” do not get downvoted/disliked to hell; in fact the opposite.

Part 4: Canon Status

Let’s be real. Most ships are shipped because people want to explore the dynamics in fanfic, fanart or something else. But Heavymedic is shipped because… well, I have no idea.

Actually, I kind of do - but only theories. You see, while the canonical evidence is here, the creators have never said anything about them. No confirmation, no disproval, no hinting, nothing.

But the ship is so prominent! There has to be something causing this!- you say. And to that I present you 2 theories on why Heavy/Medic is so popular.

Theory number 1 states that we simply all choose to interpret their interactions as homoerotic. And this is very easy to disprove - there’s simply no way we just collectively agreed on these matters out of nothing. There has to be something bigger.

And theory 2 states that, well, our interpretation is the desired interpretation. But this is even more ridiculous than theory 1 for a number of reasons. If they are in fact gay, why hasn’t Valve made them canon yet?

A Theoretical Scenario

I am going to ramble big time on this one, so buckle up lads. I’ll discuss a theoretical scenario in which, well, if that was not obvious, Valve confirms Heavymedic as canon. Maybe then we will see why they will probably never do so.

TF2 is considered by typical capital G, alt-right Gamers as a “non-political” game. This means no women (in the game itself, at least, and if even, sexy women only), no queer folk and no minorities (for some reason they accept Demoman but throw a fit if someone draws any other merc as not being pearl white). Team Fortress 2 was around before Gamergate and other things like Gamers Rise Up. It’s a classic and Valve is regarded as the good guy to Epic Game’s bad guy. If Valve did anything to confirm doubts, wherther it be clearing up popular fanon or confirming ships, these people would throw hands. (Although they seemed to ignore when one of the writers confirmed Miss Pauling is a lesbian. Huh.) Even those that don’t play TF2 would come to the aid of their bros.

Let me illustrate with two very similar examples. In both cases these confirmations were the first made by the company as a whole, both are fairly recent and both confirm a character as gay.

First we have the confirmation of Tracer from Overwatch as a lesbian. It was done in one of OVW’s comics. Tracer is the FACE of Overwatch as a whole and while most of the fanbase accepted it (thankfully the Gamers are reluctant to infest ow), some people threw what I can only describe as a hissy fit. At least her girlfriend’s a background character.

Second is Neeko from League of Legends. Unlike Tracer she was added a while before it was confirmed she was gay. LOL is much more toxic and filled with Gamers than OW and holy shit people smeared LOL so much.

Of course these are not accurate to Heavy/Medic. In both of the cases I listed it was girls being wlw and we all know how much cisgender heterosexual gamers LOVE yuri porn. Apparently only girls can be gay because they can jack off to it - if it’s two guys then it’s disgusting. Nevertheless I think these are good approximations - in every case the company gets “shat on” on social media and other sites. With the community that Valve has, I think even if they wanted them to be gay, they would never ever confirm it.

Conclusion

I’m sorry for that ending. I had to theorize a bit. Regardless I’d love if you shared this on other sites, reblogged or whatever - I wasted at least 1 and a half hours of my life on it. Feel free to cite this as a source if someone asks you why you ship the big heavy weapons expert and the feral battle medic.

what’s up HEATHENS.

stating the goddamn obvious here, it’s been a HELLUVA YEAR. One emotional rollercoaster after another but we’re ALMOST DONE. I know things aren’t gonna magically get better the second it flips to 00:01 on January first, but I’m excited to put this year behind me, and (SHOCKINGLY) a bit sad to see it go.

It was a year where the whole world completely stopped, we realized what is really important, what is really worth fighting for, and took a GODDAMN SECOND to just breathe.

For me personally, the year (which I’m counting off from November 1st) started out UNBELIEVABLY SHIT. I had just been kicked out of the country I called home for the last four years (thank you Brexit), I had ZERO job prospects, my depression was the WORST it had ever been, and I just didn’t want to get out of bed in the morning. And in the beginning, the pandemic felt like salt in the wound, an extra kick in the teeth to my early twenties that had already “failed to launch.”

But I tried to embrace the madness, really take advantage of the world (that I always thought moved to fast) properly slowing down, and take time to try and become myself again. I wanted to figure out what I loved and try and become a bit more like the person I was before my depression got so bad.

I often say I became that Manic Trash Planet Lady™ you see in sci-fi adventure films; a bit zany to say the least, with a million ideas and a very eclectic fashion sense, but embracing the insanity as it comes...

*cough cough* audrey, get to the goddamn point!

Right. lol. THE POINT IS! 

I’m not 100% “healed”, I’m not sure if I think depression is a “oh look you’re officially cured! hooray!” type of disease, but this year I let myself ENJOY SHIT for the first time in god knows how long. I still don’t know “wHaT i WaNt To dO WiTh mY LiFe”, but I’ve got a better idea and I’m heading in (what feels like) the right direction. And most of all, I can look back and say I am better than where I was a year ago.

So I wanted to say T H A N K Y O U to the mad lads on this website that introduced me to the fandoms, shows, movies, fics... THE SHIT that made me happy this year and were there to be one (BIG) piece in my healing journey.

November 2019  The Arcana (Visual Novel)

I had just gotten home and I was in a LOOOOOOW place. Randomly decided to download this app when it came up and it proceeded to ruin my life (and my bank account...) for pretty much the rest of the year. It was exactly what I needed to get me through a tough time and I was thoroughly, horse-blinders-up-to-the-rest-of-the-world, OBSESSED. These gorgeous magical fiends ruined me and all I could say was thank you.

A kagura is a type of dance, y’see, and one of the characters matches one in the Japanese word for “music”, ongaku. The other can be found in Otonomiya’s name, in fact.)

The scenery in this show is nice, at least…(?) But is that a CGI carriage I see?

Comic Earth Star…that doesn’t bode particularly well for me. The only series I’ve watched that has a series that hails from that magazine is SekaTsuyo (Wanna Be the Strongest in the World!) and I didn’t like it much in the end.

Now that I look at the title again…why is it called No Guns Life when Juzo’s life will always have a gun in it for as long as he’s like that (i.e. he has a gun for his head)…?

Wowwwwwwwww, chibi gunhead (which was hinted in the OP) was not something I expected from such a hardboiled show.

I thought there was seriously a pun there by having the gun head’s name be “Juzo”, but it turns out his name has the kanji for 13. Maybe that hints at how unlucky he is instead. (Same with Inui and it containing the character for “dog” – turns out it’s a different kanji.)

I think this is reminding me of Mahoutsukai no Yome – strong in its core genre at first, but then shows some weakness when it comes to comedy.

I worry about how this show will look during the midseason slump period…it both has traces of CGI and the still camera pretending it’s “properly animating” a scene.

That ED really is something…and hey, I got an explanation for why the show has traces of CGI in it from the credits! Unreal Engine was credited there and that’s normally used for games.

Kabukicho Sherlock 1

Dammmmmmmmn, that’s one sweet soundtrack!

Man, I know I said for Stars Align that there’s no slap to the face like a slap to the face, but…this was a slap to the face in that I did not expect Mrs Hudson to do an entire Coraline-style musical routine in the first half of the episode. I could tell from her (?) appearance that she was a drag queen/trans caricature, but they didn’t need to make her a singer in a bar…and the “sexy” shots of Mrs Hudson’s butt are kinda disturbing…and especially the part where Watson (I think it is?) gets a butt grab for his trouble…

The woman in the blue dress is Diana Oldoini (spelling needs confirmation). The woman with the blue hair…seems to be called Tenkill…(yeah, under the subs, I can’t really make it out.) All the women at Pipe Cat seem to be trans stereotypes, which vaguely annoys and unsettles me.

Kyogoku = Natsuhiko Kyogoku and Sherlock is Holmes, but I dunno about “Michel” or “Kobayashi”.

The Watson from the Holmes books was a doctor in the Afghanistan war…I know that much.

Natsu -> Fuyu (summer -> winter), hiko (“brilliance/brightness”, a common component to Japanese boys’ names) -> to (“person”, also a common component of Japanese boy’s names).

I…don’t get why Sherlock is screaming because I don’t know what Watson’s bottle-thingy is for, but I’ll assume it has to do with pain for Sherlock’s genitals or something of the sort…and go “ouch” for him.

Okay, so the next-ep preview’s “Why not join the staring at eye moles squad?” is a joke. You see, the word nakibokuro refers to a mole (or beauty spot) under the eye (where hokuro = mole and naki = cry, so it’s as if the person cried the mole into existence). Then it’s mitsumetai, meaning “want to stare”, but then the tai for “want” is substituted for the tai meaning “squad”. So that nonsense English line is just a very literal translation that isn’t funny…just confusing. I don’t get the “Cobra?/ Farewell” exchange though…

This very last scene before the end of the episode seems to be a page of info about the setting of Shinjuku in this series. East and west were split by a wall and train tracks, it seems, and you ned to pass through the gate to go between them…I spotted this omake because of the cat in one corner.

I don’t quite get why the case had to be treated like a gameshow at one part, but that would be a cool plot if someone ever wrote a story about it…(actually, wait. I think I do know a similar plotline from Detective Conan – the one with Natsuki in it – plus the Running Man by Steven King is somewhat similar to it too.)

This is a sequel to a series I watched ages ago in Cantonese, so…heck if I’ll understand what’s going on, but I’ll try. Even though my memory of these characters should be better than everyone else’s, it might even be worse, considering all the anime I watched in the years between…

All these faces are familiar…but I’ve forgotten most of their names…If I remember right, the blonde is Sanche, the only one I really remember because he gave his all to cutting radish by moonlight so that it was proven it was so thin you could see the moonlight through it…yeah, I think that’s the only character aside from Mao I can really say anything about. (I don’t think he was blonde last time I saw an anime about him, though.)

These chickens are adorable...in this day and age, we know these chickens aren't carriers of misfortune...but just roll with it for now.

This could be the show that decides it all. Iruma-kun is the 2nd-last show on my prospective shows for the season, so I’m cutting the fat fast by watching a few shows that indicate the quality of everything underneath as well as itself.

Okay, so the pun in the title is Mairimashita! Iruma-kun (“I’ve Arrived! Iruma-kun”in formal Japanese because he’s the demon king’s grandson), but it’s “demon entry” rather than the standard kanji…so there’s absolutely no way to make that joke work in English, hence “Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun”. The pun in Iruma is that it’s an anagram of the formal iku/kuru (come/go), mairu. Yes, that’s the mairu I was talking about earlier.

I love how the narrator is just like “akuma deeeeeee~su” with all the enthusiasm of a postman; that is, he’s not very good at covering up his sarcasm.

When was the last time you cried, and why? Uhhh, I think last week? I’m not sure whether it’s because I’m so sick until I feel so frustrated or when I was having a huge row with my parent LOL

Do you prefer staying at home or hanging out at your friends’s place? Depends, really. When I’m in the mood for going out and socialize, I’d rather hanging out at my friend’s place. Though there’s one friend of mine where I can totally relax and because my house is not so peaceful right now I think I’d rather be there kkkk. Though, mostly I prefer to be at a coffee shop alone with my laptop :)

If you were in a situation where your fav SLBP character and your 10 yrs old child with him are at the brink of death. You are given the chance to save only one of them. Who would you choose? My child. Hi! I'm happy your anon mode is back! I wanted to write about TG in the past weeks, but then exams came and I forgot what I wanted to say lol, hopefully I will remember :) So I saw another anon recommending KS. Is it good? I don't know if to read it or not. About YOI I wasn't interested, then I saw the last episode which I liked and watched it from the end to the beginning XD Yurio is my fav too btw! Happy to have you back!

Hi Anon and awww, thank you <3 You were in exam hell recently too? I hope things went okay for you! I’m sorry for the inconvenience with the Anon mode though, but I couldn’t do differently, I had too much work. :/

About YOI, yeah I just love Yurio hahah, he was instantly my fav because of his bratty attitude although I like Victor and Yuri too. One day I might just watch the rest of it, but since I know the entire story, it’s not one of my priorities right now :)

As for KS, um, well here’s the thing, it is unexpectedly good as in, even considering the title, I wasn’t expecting it to please me so much (seeing as I thought this would be yet another cliché type of a story centered on BL love with one dude being Bad™ while the other still loved him despite the blood on his hands, Oh How Sweet™).

I’m completely exaggerating it of course, but basically, that was my idea of it when I first saw it on my dash two weeks ago or so (thanks @theawesomefanatic and a few others).I still gave it a try one evening, almost closed my phone after the first ten pages because it already gave off an extremely creepy and unhealthy vibe when nothing had even happened but then I couldn’t sleep anyway so I went through ch1 and 2 thinking ‘ew that’s so messed up’ and… well, it’s so well done in being so damn messed up that you just can’t stop reading, haha.

It’s a bit like when you’re watching one of the most gory episodes of Criminal minds (or Silence of the lambs) alone at home and without any light on, being on the edge of your seat because you’re scared to see what could happen but at the same time you still want to know, and since the author constantly plays on that, that’s why it’s a really good psychological thriller.

So all in all I’m 100% in it for the psychological horror part of it and because the two main characters are really fascinating to read about (both on their own and through their relationship obviously) and honestly, I just can’t wait to find out where all of this is going. :) The rumors about the series aren’t fake at all though:

it’s not just called “Killing Stalking” for show, it’s really a high level of violence 

it’s sexually explicit and R18 for a reason

it’s emotionally disturbing

there is a lot of Discourse about it in the tags so if you tend to be emotionally involved when it comes to fandoms, well… just be careful :3

The first two chapters (available for free here) really put me off (totally on purpose of course) and who knows if I would have continued afterwards if I hadn’t been unable to sleep that one night.

So the point is, you might not believe it’s actually that violent or disturbing but it is (personally I was just laughing it off like “oh reeeeeally?” and yes, really xD) and it’s meant to be that way in the first place, so you’ll have to see by yourself if it appeals to you or not. :3 

As for some personal pros of mine:

actual good characterization and not just your usual BL tropes more or less copied and pasted onto 2 characters to fit with the horror/thriller genre which is an A++ point and something I hadn’t found in a long time when it comes to this specific genre.

actual character development for the two main guys is totally a thing and it’s great

cliffhangers everywhere and not just at the end of chapters

good pace (+ chapters are weekly)

both characters actually have big issues in and outside of their relationship (which is 100% my thing because one does exist as an individual outside of a relationship, and it’s especially important in a toxic one)

and to end this, two good posts without spoilers that I agree with (amongst many others) in case you want to read some more about the series before seeing whether you’re to try it or not: [x] [x]

Some people might see this post and argue that “no it’s just supposed to be a BL story under extreme conditions” but honestly I don’t really care: as I was saying to that other Anon, I’m after plot and characterization (though in series with a small cast, characterization > plot) and so as long as I’m getting that from KS, I’ll keep on reading :) 

I hope that made sense, sorry for this huge ramble. :3 Just weigh that decision carefully okay? I have no idea about what you like or how old you are, so I hope this helped you to get a clearer idea about KS.
