Careful with this take, or you might get burned, but despite popular opinion, I think Malleus more than deserves to get his ass beat for all he did in book 7. On top of that—and get out the hose because this opinion is on fire—but it’s understandable that he is other people label him the enemy of mankind, as tragic as it is.

Good intentions or not, it doesn’t change the fact that he cursed people against their will for an eternal sleep where they would never be able to be with anyone ever again. On top of that, it was stated that if they stay under too long, all those people will eventually die. (Ironic, considering that he cast the spell in the first place to prolong Lilia’s life.) And most people aren’t even aware of Malleus’ reasons; all they know is that one of the most powerful mages in the world is spreading a curse that will put them in a cursed slumber to eventually die. And Malleus himself has no intention of stopping. He believes what he is doing is right and refuses to listen time and time again when they tell him otherwise.

And it’s not like no one tried to reason with him peacefully. Silver, Sebek, Lilia, Kalim, and Ortho all tried. He made a choice, and no one else’s opinion matters.

Now I get why he’s doing this and sympathize with him. But regardless of his reason, it doesn’t change the fact he’s actively hurting people even when they’re telling him to stop. For that alone he deserves a butt-kicking.

Not to mention, the butt-kicking is a theme in all books, as that’s the only way to cut them off from their phantoms. Whether fans like it or not—and the majority do not—fighting Malleus is the only way to save him. Once he’s cut off from his Phantom and NOT actively hurting people, then it’s time to talk to him—not before. But I’m getting off topic.

Bottom line, I like Malleus—despite this post hinting otherwise—but just because he’s sad doesn’t mean all his actions are okay or excusable. And it doesn’t mean that people in-universe don’t have the right to be angry or afraid or call him things when they don’t have the information players do. And it definitely doesn’t mean he doesn’t deserve whooping for cursing everyone, ignoring their wishes, and endangering them to die.

Don’t misunderstand; I don’t want him to suffer, far from it. I just want what every overblot boy got: a knock-off his high horse and a telling off so he can GROW. After that, they can have the most sappy the writers want.

(Sorry this became so long, I did not realize how into this I got. Anyway, Malleus fans seem “senitive” right now, so if you want to avoid drama, feel free to delete.)

Yes, it is Malleus' turn to get his tail handed to him and taken down a peg and learn that what he's doing is wrong even if it's coming from an understandable or even good place. He's messed up big time and needs to be forced to see that. He thinks his power lets him determine what the right thing to do is, and that cannot be allowed to fly!

I couldn't really add anything else to this if I tried. I'm not sure how sensitive fans of Mal are actually being, so I won't outright agree with that notion. But like . . . Come on guys. It was bound to happen. We all have to watch our faves be problematic for a bit and get curb stomped back into being sensible. Your boy will be fine. I promise.
