I'm just saying, the whiplash between his sheer disregard for the games without which his magnum opus wouldn't exist and his Oscar speech about how SatAM was his life's work is jarring. He couldn't spare the games so much as a cough of appreciation, but would wax poetic about how Sonic and Sally's relationship was so universal and touching and whatever else. And, again, he was not the show's principal writer; he worked with Pat Allee and Len Janson.

There was something extremely fauxteurish about him, eerily reminiscent of how BNFs conduct themselves now, to the point where I kept wondering if he maybe set the example with his attitude towards the games. "I can do better than SoJ," but then their life's work turns out to be painfully mid and it makes you wonder how low their opinion on Sonic was if that was the best they could do.

I would have respected him more if he hadn't, quote, "filled the script" of a play about Cherokee history "with bad jokes in English," but the dude was not the next Hemingway.

Aca Top 10: Sitcom Themes — VoicePlay music video

Since the emergence of TV sitcoms in the mid-20th century, part of their enduring charm has been the catchy songs that accompany the opening credits. There's something reassuring about a familiar tune that indicates whatever problems the quippy characters might face will be resolved in less than 30 minutes, and probably end with a hug. Hey there! Sorry to just drop this on you like that, but I though you might know something about this.

As far as I can tell Soult was basically banished from France for some time after 1815 and lived in Prussian exile thanks to his wife Louise who was from the Rhineland. I'd be very surprised if the Prussian government was really all that chill about letting one of Napoleon's top marshals, who had still been fighting for him as late as the hundred days campaign and who also didn't really make himself all that popular during the forth coalition, just live in their country. So my question would be do you know something about the Soults lives at that time? What did they think about their situation? Did they face some kind of restrictions or repressions?

Oh, thank you for the question! That's a good one! 💖 I think I've talked about Soult in exile at some points but as far as I'm aware I've never tried to give a summary of this period of his life. As to sources, I'll mostly refer to Nicole Gotteri once again, because what else.

Soult was already condemned to be exiled in an ordonnance royale from 24 July 1815, immediately after Louis XVIII had returned to Paris. While Ney's name topped the list of those condemned to death, Soult's was at the top of those to be driven out of France. However, execution of this decree was postponed, and after Soult had (barely) managed to get back to his mother in distant Saint-Amans, he was allowed to stay there (under strict surveillance, of course) some months longer. He spent the time working on a memorandum for his defense and to worry about the future: while public rumours abounded about how many millions he supposedly owned, the family had real problems to pay the 16,500 francs due as extra taxes for the contributions to the allies.

However, the loi d'amnistie from 12 January 1816 confirmed Soult's exile. He left Saint-Amans on 28 January and reached Maubeuge at the border of France on 6 February. Louise and the children, accompanied by Soult's younger brother Jean-François, followed mid-February. The family reunited at Barmen, where Louise's mother Wilhelmine now lived with the family of one of Louise's sisters, on 19 February 1816.

That was the beginning of an exile of three years. After a brief stay at Barmen, the family rented (on 21 April 1816) a house in Düsseldorf in Alleestraße (today: Heinrich-Heine-Allee) No. 7, close to the Ratingen gate and, more importantly, to the local gymnasium for Napoléon Hector. According to contemporary newspaper articles, it was an appartment of seven rooms (which is comfortable for a family of soon-to-be five, but rather modest for a duke), and the family did not even have a carriage of their own. They lived a rather secluded life, according to all sources. It was here where Louise, at the age of 46, gave birth to a daughter on 27 January 1817, whose death a couple of months later devastated the family. By that time, the two older children had already returned to France, in order to complete their education.

In February 1818, Louise also left for Paris, in order to look after the children, and Soult stayed behind, alone. As the house in Düsseldorf was far too big for him, he moved back in with his mother-in-law Wilhelmine. Louise and the children joined him in July 1818 for a prolonged summer vacation that they spent at a rented little chateau and that saved Soult from his growing depression. But it took another long winter that he had to spend alone, until May 1819, before Louis XVIII allowed Soult to return to France. Among other people, Soult's former aide Saint-Chamans (despite being at odds with Soult, as usual) had interfered on Soult's behalf and pleaded his case.

So, that's the timeline. Now to your actual question, how was Soult treated. For context: Louise Soult's family lived in what had been the Grand-Duchy of Berg-Kleve (and had belonged to one Joachim Murat), a region now governed by the King of Prussia. And it may have been quite fortunate for Soult that most people in these regions did not like their new Prussian overlords much 😁.

As mentioned above, Soult had already been under surveillence by French secret police while he waited for the final decision in his case. Once he had crossed the border, Prussian police took over. The director of police for the region, some guy named Schnabel, dispatched a police inspector to observe Soult and report about his comings and goings literally from day one. According to these reports, Soult arrived in Barmen accompanied by his 14-year-old son in a heavily laden carriage pulled by four horses. He entered the house of his relatives - and was then not be seen again for several days. Some young people rioted loudly in front of Wilhelmine Berg's house, without police interfering. And of course, there were the usual rumours about Soult having brought a wealth of 27 millions with him.

Those malicious rumours seem to have been all that the inspector hanging out on the street in front of Wilhelmine's house was able to report. Inside, Soult had asked the mayor of Barmen to come to visit, informed him officially that he would stay for a bit with his German family, and asked for a teacher in Greek and Latin for Napoléon Hector.

Just because we've been kicked out France does not mean that you can skip homework, young man.

He also had the Prussian notary in Barmen, a Monsieur Leopold Alhaus, draft a document that would allow Soult's brother to manage his French possessions in his absence.

A week after Soult's arrival, by the end of February, Prussian police decided to tighten the reins, just so that this Frenchman would not get too comfortable. Police director Schnabel informed Soult that he needed permission by the Prussian government if he wanted to take up residence in the Rhine region, and gave him four weeks to obtain it. Soult answered on 2 March that he had not decided yet about where he wanted to go and that so far, he was only visiting. On 11 March, Schnabel triumphantly announced that the King of Prussia had just decreed that, while he allowed the French exiles to stay in his domains, he would only tolerate them staying in Pommerania and Magdeburg.

So, pack up, ex-duke!

However, before following her husband, Louise Soult had already talked about the possibility of staying in her home region with Prussian ambassador Golz in Paris. Golz in turn had written to prince Hardenberg in Berlin about it. So did Soult now himself from Barmen, as soon as this overzealous police director started to harrass him. Among other things, he wondered if it might be possible for him to stay in Düsseldorf, because his son could go to school there. (Obviously still a major point for Soult.)

And guess what? On 24 March (almost miraculously fast for Prussian bureaucracy), Hardenberg sent the official permission for Soult and his family to stay in the duchy of Berg as long as he wished. For Soult, the King of Prussia had explicitly made an exception to the rule that applied to the other exiles.

Which put an immediate stop to director Schnabel and his ilk. I mean, you don't want to get on the worng side of the government. Who would have thought that this Frenchman had friends in Berlin?

I do not know why high-ranking Prussians showed themselves so lenient towards Soult in this case. To some degree, this was likely a concession to Louise. But it also may have had something to do with the fact that Soult had governed a Prussian province for so long and had been tasked with the details of several difficult negotiations. While contemporary reports from that period often badmouth him, and while Prussian historiography from the 1860s and 1870s can be really vicious towards Soult, Prussian books from the 1890s and later seem to treat him with much more benevolence, explaining that Soult in all these negotiations had tried to be as generous as Napoleon allowed him to be, and always fair. I suppose his contemporaries, especially the Prussian government at the time, were quite aware of this (even if they never would have admitted it out loud). This may have been their way to thank him.

Of course both Prussian and French police kept a watchful eye of Soult all the while (even when he was allowed back his entry into France was immediately reported to Paris). But armed with the permission of the King, he could at least avoid all real harassment.

As to the locals in Düsseldorf, they seem to have liked Soult well enough. While Soult did not go out much he must have had some contacts in town and occasionally invited people to dinner who, as a French police report stated, did not talk about anything but trade and agriculture. Soult himself, as to him, apparently loved to tend to the garden. But I have seen a mention of him being member of a club in Düsseldorf, and I have come across the report of a book seller who visited him. So he had not completely disappeared from view.

I hope this answers your question somewhat. There are some more details about Soult's life in Düsseldorf (local newspapers occasionally mention his name, Napoléon Hector successfully graduated from Düsseldorf's gymnasium and even had the honour to hold the graduation adress in Latin etc.) But this has already gotten quite long.

Animation Night 158: The Carnival Is Back In Town

Hi everyone, it’s Animation Night! Still happening!!

Tonight I am evidently running quite late. The reasonable reason for this is that I just arrived at my friends’ house in Glasgow and it’s taken a minute to get everything set up. The less reasonable reason is that I spent a lot of time today playing Beat Saber. But anyway!

Today is going to be a combination of old stuff and new stuff! Back in the day, one of the first things I showed on Animation Night were short film collections such as Meikyū Monogatari (1987) [lit. Labyrinth Tales, but known in English as Neo Tokyo and Manie-Manie] and Robot Carnival (also 1987).

The unifying factor in both of these is Katsuhiro Otomo, but let’s not make it all about him! Both are collections of short films by a huge variety of directors. For Otomo himself, it was a ridiculously busy time - as well as directing films in both collections he was hard at work on Akira. For Robot Carnival he created the intro and outro, telling the story of the Robot Carnival itself, a massive crawling machine whose displays have turned into deadly weapons to the apocalypse survivors it runs over below.

And alongside him are a number of familiar names. Kōji Morimoto, future cofounder of Studio 4C, made the ridiculously involved short film Franken’s Gears almost singlehandedly (his family helped with the inbetweening!). Animator Manabu Ōhashi, who tragically passed away last year, made a beautiful abstract short film called Cloud. And Yasuomi Umetsu, whose uniquely chunky hyperrealist design style I’ve written about now and again, directed a troubling short called Presence about a man who creates and destroys a gynoid, probably the most technically spectacular film he’s done. Takashi Nakamura (who I must cover soon, director of e.g. A Tree of Palme) brings a riotous midnight dance of machines in The Tale of Chicken Man and Red Neck. Hiroyuki Kitakubo, future director of Golden Boy and Blood: the Last Vampire, brings a satirical 19th-century fight in Strange Tales of Meiji Culture: Westerner’s Invasion.

All in all it’s one of my favourite short film collections - this is probably like the fourth or fifth time I’ve shown it to people? It’s a great and very varied ride.

And Meikyū Monogatari, this is the work of Madhouse, and as such it has films by Rintarō and Yoshiaki Kawajiri. Rintarō who introduces us by leading a girl into a strange surreal circus to set the stage for the other shorts. Kawajiri directs cyberpunk racing short The Running Man, which is pure imagery and carrying 1000 synthwave music videos on its back - but the original is surprisingly dreamily paced. The biggest highlight is Otomo’s Construction Cancellation Order, in which a salaryman attempts to shut down a massive out-of-control autonomous construction project, butting up against a robot foreman who will do anything to continue the work. If you watched Akira and felt like “damn I think this needs more machinery porn”, Otomo’s got you covered! It’s a great short, unfolding with a sense of wonderful comic inevitability.

Tonight the plan is to revisit both of these short films! But also to check out some recent short films that I thought were neat. For example, we have How And Why Don Jose Dissipated by ‘Animoshe’, a psychedelic short about a bee and a tourist with a truly unique style...

And Record Highs by Beryl Allee about an athletic competition among frogs amidst... striking circumstances.

It’s also coming into CalArts season, so if we feel hungry for more, I’ll check out the latest student films. Plus, if you’ve seen anything neat you’d like to watch together, tell me and I’m sure we can find room!!

Well FUCK here’s the problem it’s that I texted Allee back once and she didn’t respond. And then I texted again with the “right” response and THEN she texted me. And that felt like shit. Okay? And it was confirmation that doing the right thing for other people means the reward of their presence and acknowledgement; conversely, doing the wrong thing means being ignored. And, in extension, being ignored means doing the wrong thing. So now every goddamn time I don’t get a response, I assume it’s this same situation where I did something so wrong that that recipient doesn’t even know what to do with me. I’m such a goddamn fuck-up that they have nothing to say. And I know it isn’t true but my mind works a mile a minute lately and I am so fucking scared. And to top it all off! Every single time I curse now I see my mother crying. I think about all the ways I haven’t helped get a-goddamn-gain and I just need to learn how to make these things go away. How do you make this go away? There’s nothing to learn here. Please, please go away.

“The building on the outskirts of the Tiergarten in Berlin Mitte was built as a grand bourgeois palace in the neoclassical style by Friedrich Hitzig in 1870/71 and has served as the seat of the Swiss Embassy since 1919. This building was originally one of many similar buildings lining the street. Today, it stands as a solitary building on the banks of the Spree, located on a river bend between Berlin’s Central Railway Stations, the German Bundestag, and the Office of the Federal Chancellor. Under National-Socialist rule, nearly all the buildings in the area fell victim to the projected “Large Hall” that was to be part of the “World Capital Germania;” allied bombing raids destroyed the remaining buildings. After 1945, the Swiss Embassy was the only building left standing in Berlin Alsen. When the Berlin Wall was built in 1961, the building was relegated to the outer periphery of West Berlin. 

With German reunification in 1989, this urban situation again changed fundamentally and the building inhabited a strategic central location in Germany’s capital city: the embassy building had gained new relevance. A key intention behind the east wing extension was to complement and frame the existing palatial building as an urban fragment. To this end, the new building stands next to the original palace as a second and separate building. A free symmetry determines the composition of its façade as seen in Gunnar Asplund’s extension of Göteburg Town Hall. Within the context of this entire development, the façade loses some of its heaviness and gains a sense of vitality. The new building does not appear to stand as an autonomous volume but as a wing developed in close correlation and formal interaction with the existing building. Old and new come together to form an architectural whole. The present day and the historic past remain equally present. The annex houses the diplomatic and consular services. A courtyard arranges the north and east facing rooms. Facing the schematic order of the neoclassical palace façade is an elementary figure consisting of wall and voids. The interaction of empty and infilled wall cavities produces a manifold dialogue between inside and outside, massiveness and emptiness. The material quality of the annex’s exterior also stands in contrast to the existing palatial building. 

The cement mixture used contains coquina stone and follows a special processing method, which produces subtle tonalities running from ochre to gray. This produces a correspondence between the historic and the new building without the temporal distinction in their architectural language being denied. Helmut Federle’s framing artwork completes the development’s west façade, giving the firewall its unique features. The raw cement orthogonal relief covers the entire front, its sculptural quality congenially combining with the architecture. This relief forms both an integral part of the building and represents what remains absent. The wall no longer stands in for the destroyed house that used to stand here. Instead, the massive cement bands contain inscribed within them the memory of temporal durations. These are given lasting expression in the shape of the relief.”

New Capitol set photos and video from The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes filming location at Karl-Marx-Allee in Berlin, Germany.

This could be preparations for a flashback scene since the pics show snow on the ground, and the main portion of the book takes place in summer. After the reaping, when he starts to smell food from the buffet, Coriolanus starts thinking about hunger and the horrors of the war:

“One winter’s night, Coriolanus and Tigris had slipped out of the apartment to scavenge some wooden crates they’d spotted earlier in an alley. On the way, they passed three bodies, recognizing one as that of a young maid who served tea so nicely at the Cranes’ afternoon gatherings. A heavy, wet snow began falling and they thought the streets deserted, but on the way home, a bundled figure sent them scurrying behind a hedge.”

They witness a horrible scene they never speak of again.

You can also see the lasting effects of the war described in the book, with rubble littering the streets. There are rabies warning posters in a similar style as the other Capitol posters previously revealed.

😭 For Amelia and Aiden? Or Yaeko and Kome?

I do both I think.

Aiden was on his way out from his dorm, to the city to get some ingredients for his next big competion. However he heard a familiar voice sobbing around the corner of a dark allee... He saw his girlfriend Amelia... breathing heavily and it seemed her wrist was hurt. She cried tears. The first thing he did was to hug her tight. But his voice was more angry.

"Who did this to you?"

"Please don't... if you meet them you will be in danger too..."

"I want you to tell me such things... anyone that wants to hurt you will have to go through me."

She looked up at him her tears not stopping.

"Please Aiden... if you are gone, I wouldn't know what to do."

"Then stay with me for today... in my dormitory... this way they can't find you... I patch you up and make you something to eat."

She seemed more calm and she wiped her tears away... however she tugged at his sleeve.

"We can't do this forever... one day I need to get back to school."

He placed a kiss on her forehead.

"But please if you have the opportunity send me a message if they bother you again.. Even if its just a emoji of a knife... so I know you are in danger..."

"I will."

Kome got out of class, she wanted to meet up with Yaeko at their dorm, but as she knocked at her room, she heard someone crying.... coming in seh saw her on bed sobbing...

"Yaeko... whats wrong?"

"I had a nightmare... and it brought up some bad memories..."

Kome sat next to her and pulled her in a firm hug...

"I know how it is to struggle with Nightmares... let it out if you need it... I am here with you."

"Komeeee." And so they found themselves cuddling together in Yaekos bed and Kome tried to calm her down..

"Hey wanna watch a cute movie to calm down`?"

"I would love that."

I'm gonna be really real here & say: I am not bothered by this at all & here's an article that gets into it + an interview where he straight up states his musical influence has always been Black performers...

I'll also say with some things the cat has been out of the metaphorical bag for decades, the can of worms is open, there's no takes backsies. I don't like when Miley decided to try on being Black as a costume to rebel in, but I can't make little white girls not do that, all I can do is observe... and even then, that's not the impression Bruno Mars gives me. He doesn't seem to be "performatively Black-adjacent" or trying on a Blaccent for a gag or wearing cornrows for IG likes, and his creative voice has been consistent for his whole career.

On top of which, I'm not gonna say every & all expressions of Black music & art ever were, are, or automatically should be 100% Black exclusive, esp once you take into account who all has done songwriting, backing vocals, instrumentals, production, etc in the music industry for decades going beyond "just" the face. You aren't automatically a parasite or a poseur for having historical or cultural links to or influence in arts spaces that don't appear to represent you on the surface.

This also applies to theatre... for example, the problem with the raps in Hamilton is not the ethnicoty of who wrote the raps, but that I damn sure ain't trying to hear a rap about Thomas Jefferson when rap is a Black cultural art form & that mf owned, raped, and by that rape produced more of his own slaves. Lin Manuel Miranda not being Black is insult on top of injury, esp once you realize the awful politics & money plays he and his family engage in, abusing Puerto Rican people for profit.

But then on the flip side, Allee Willis, who recently passed, was a White Jewish woman who co-wrote all the music for The Color Purple on Broadway, wrote "Boogie Wonderland" & "September" for Earth Wind and Fire, and grew up listening to Motown records be recorded in Detroit. Do we disavow her despite her cultural authenticity, do we stop listening to "September"? Do you decide that's somehow different than Lin Manuel Miranda & create a double standard, do you deride both of them just to make a point so you drag her down with him, or do you distinguish artistic integrity by what the end product is used for, whom it elevates, who profits, and if that product is indeed exploitative, harmful, or dehumanizing?

There is a difference between communal, joint engagement with an art you may very well already have ties to, use of art, and misuse of art. There are differences based not just upon having a right, permission, or access to an art in the first place, but also the level of respect with which that access is gained, how it is used, and how it is shared.

I'm not mad at being sampled, I'm not mad at Bruno Mars for being a little Filipino Puerto Rican boy who grew up listening to good-ass music, but that's a different thing than Gwen Stefani toting around the Harajuku Girls like accessories or Iggy Azalea trying to sound street when the woman's Australian or Justin Timberlake deciding he's white again.

We gotta get past 101 levels of Cliffs Notes theory & definition, and move on to application, and understanding of what appropriation looks like in action in different contexts & different industries (and from or by people of different ethnicities, and how that influences their "claim" to a thing or not), how it works (incl inherited appropriation ie we can't un-gentrify Americanized yoga at this point so it's not the YMCA group class trainer's fault vs active appropriation ie Vanessa Hudgens does not need to wear a bindi to Coachella), and being able to recognize & express why it's appropriative— if you even have all the information you need to make that judgement in the first place.
