All-American (2016) by David Hernandez
In Episode 315, Rachel brings an all-american poem!
Rachel: David Hernandez said, “My poems are partially autobiographical. To put a percentage on it, 57.4%.”
Griffin: [laughs]
Rachel: “Honestly, it depends from poem to poem. Some are more informed by events in my life, while others are less so. Here’s the thing. When I’m writing a poem, that’s based on an experience from memory, I don’t feel beholden to the facts. That’s the job of journalists. I’m more concerned about conveying an emotional truth, with making art through language. If the poem’s telling me ‘Look, I know you had bananas this morning in your cereal, but blueberries is sonically more interesting’, I’m going with blueberries.” [giggles]

All-American XIII was a volume in Bruce Weber's annual survey of American legends. That year's theme was "speak up" and features an eclectic array of activists and actors, musicians and writers, newcomers and veterans who proudly share their unique - and out-spoken - visions. After all, free speech and diverse opinions are integral parts of the nation's heritage. This book is a tribute to all those who stand up to share their stories with the world - inspiring, entertaining - and at times challenging us. One thing is certain: when these compelling individuals speak up, you just have to listen.

Just saw the news about The CW/Nexstar not only laying off somewhere between 30 to 40 people at the network (these aren’t writers but people who actually work at the network offices), more executives stepping down, and deciding only to have both “The Winchesters” and “Walker: Independence” have 13 episodes for their first season and it is really worrying. I forgot till I saw these articles that Nexstar did this when they bought WGN America to turn it into a 24 hour news channel. They cancelled all the scripted shows and none of them were able to find new homes. Now they keep saying they haven’t made any decisions about next season besides wanting to do more comedies, reality shows, buying shows from other countries, sports, and news, but they did say they might keep a few of these shows.
If that’s true I only think “The Winchesters”, both “Walker” shows, and maybe both “All-Americans” will survive while everything else either gets a “final season” or is cancelled. They have to air everything they announced at the Upfronts last May till next May, but I really don’t think anything else will be saved. All the DC ones are also in jeopardy due to the new forming of the DCU and what sounds like WBD only wanting HBO Max to have shows directly tied to the film side of DC. I also don’t see any of the streamers or other broadcast networks stepping in to save these shows either as most want their own content. Just preparing the likelihood all these shows are going to end and getting really sad as I’ve been watching The CW all the way back when it was originally The WB and UPN over 20 years ago.
ETA: I’ve added a reblog with some more info as today there was a new interview with the new head of entertainment programming they’ve hired.

Honestly pokemon is the ideal universe not just because there’s cute animals that are your life companions, but because they have walkable cities and adequate biking infrastructure

i don't think people really understand what's happening in gaza. with each passing day that sees more and more palestinians dead, it's becoming easier and easier for those in the west to perceive them as nothing more than a statistic. they might engage w the occasional palestine post, sure, but it's just as easy to scroll right past that moments later w no real outrage for the genocide retained.
it's vital to stay reminded that palestinians who are with us today won't be with us tomorrow. it's happening every second of every minute of every hour, and it's relentless. somewhere in gaza a little girl is losing her mother, a little boy is watching his siblings bleed to death, elderly people are infirm with starvation and illness, palestinian women and girls are being sexually assaulted and kept in cages, fathers are leaving tents to find food for their families and not coming back. this is all happening right now, and it's a direct result of the west's complacency. it's a direct result of their not seeing arabs as people worth saving.
it might be hard to compute as a westerner, but this is real. don't let your privilege blind you to your humanity.

to any americans who feel "paralyzed" and "dont know what to do" to help with gaza:
reading a fucking book. i beg of you.
in a time of knowledge suppression is it your duty to arm yourself with knowledge.
read about americas occupations in the middle east.
read about 9/11 from outside of america and see how they inflicted senseless harm and violence to countless amounts of people and have been suppressing your rights for the past 2 fucking decades.
read about any of the countless wars from the past 30 years. especially from a civilian's. and the victims and survivors' perspective. listen to the horror stories and do not plug your fucking ears as to what your country is doing.
and read about fucking gaza and palestine and keep up with what is happening no matter how "sad" or "uncountable" you might get.
dont look away from this.
you dont have the right to be comfortable during countless active genocides.
if you're knowledgeable, you're powerful, and our current state doesnt fucking want that.
you have the power to change things if you open your eyes and scream to the world.
wake the fuck up.
Edit: please check the reblogs there are readings and ways to help

genuinely it will never stop baffling me how people will wear twilight shirts and talk about team Edward vs team Jacob and then the same people will be like "I'm not basing my personality off of a piece of media (harry potter) made by a transphobe 😌" like good that's great! so you can excuse racism but you draw the line at transphobia? good to know
