OKAY, SIT DOWN BECAUSE I HAVE MORE TO SAY ABOUT HER THAN I ORIGINALLY THOUGHT (I've been here for like an hour or more)

Her design was made by both me and my friend @xommed, and more than a variant we think of her as our interpretation of the character, which may or may not be very different from the original Lux because the only thing we have from he is fro when she was a kid, so we kinda made up all about her lol

She lives in the Omega Timeline with her parents Dream and Cross, and her half brother Palette. Her best friends are Shino (one of the afterdeath kids) and Drew/Sasha (Mine and Xomma's horrordust fankid), though she is friend with a whole lot of other characters and fankids (The Death kids, Gradient, Blue Print, PJ, etc)

Lux doesn't have a defined age, as sometimes we may draw her older or younger depending on the situation, but most of the time we draw her as a teen or young adult. If I had to be a bit more specific regarding her age, I'd say she's about a year older than Shino and Drew

She is a calm and kind person who won't hesitate to help people, but she's not afraid to say things just how they are or kick someone's ass for being an asshole. Her world view is similar to Dream's but a bit more realistic; she belives that anyone can be a good person if they try, but she knows that not everyone really wants to try to be good

In her friend group she is the voice of reason, but just because she's usually the smart one it doesn't mean that she doesn't have her stupid moments either. She can be very silly, but knows when to get serious. Lux usually likes going along with whatever dumb thing Sasha and Shino have going on, sometimes even she herself initiating said dumbery, but knows where the line lies for things

Regarding school, Lux is a decent enough student. She is a smart girl, but school is just so boring! She does just the bare minimum to pass, leaving homework undone and projects half baked. She may be the "voice of reason" in most occations, but that doesn't mean she follows her own advice when it comes to responsability

As noted in the previous paragraph, Lux can be a bit "rebelious". She doesn't take certain laws, rules and regulations seriously, either because she thinks they're dumb or can't make any sense of them (Example: doing grafities in the Omega Timeline, eating in class, elbows on the table while eating, etc). There has also been ocations in which she has skipped classess she finds easy (like English class to give an example) out of boredom or gotten out of her house when she wasn't allowed to (She always notifies Palette though, so at least someone knows where she is + she knows her brother is not gonna snitch, because she does the same for him)

Lux has a very good relationship with her family, but her parents can sometimes be a bit too overbearing for her, specially when they talk about responsability. With Palette everything is all good all the time. They constantly tease each other about certain things, but they know there's no intent to hurt behind their words. The siblings are always there for each other when they need them

Some fun facts about her: · She can change her "hair" however she wants. Most of the time she has it like how you see in my art, but if she wanted to she could change it so it lookes more like canon Lux, or make it longer, make it defy grabity, etc. The only thing she can't change about it is the colour · She's very intuitive when it comes to figuring out people's feelings and what to do about them. However, she has a bit of a rougher time when it comes to figuring out her own feelings · She is a self sacrificing type of person. She'd do and give anything, and I mean, ANYTHING for the people she loves · She's a lesbian (of course she is) · Her design was subconciously inspired by Hatsune Miku (we didn't realise how similar they were until later on)

Internet news:

About a month ago, popular VTuber Pikamee was planning to stream Hogwarts Legacy. There was a backlash to this, though how much of a backlash is now unclear because some of the obvious lightning rods for backlash (e.g. Pikamee's Hogwarts Legacy tweets) were later deleted.

During this backlash, Pikamee canceled the Hogwarts Legacy streams, then decided to take the rest of February off. It's unclear whether this is related to the backlash, but many people have assumed it is, because it's the simplest explanation that can be constructed from available evidence. I think it's a reasonable assumption; riding out the storm was probably a major contributing factor in the break, though other considerations (like stress or IRL issues) may have made it a more appealing solution.

Recently, Pikamee announced her "graduation". For my mutuals that don't follow VTubers, that basically means the retirement of a VTuber persona. Graduation has many possible causes; disagreements between talent and agency, scheduling problems, the talent losing the interest/time/etc required to be a VTuber, etc.

It should go without saying that a lot of people blame the Hogwarts Legacy backlash, because it's the simplest explanation that can be constructed from available evidence. This assumption, I think, is less reasonable. Graduation is a big decision, most controversies are (or at least are assumed to be) temporary. If the Hogwarts Legacy thing played a part, I suspect it's a secondary consideration, e.g. the Discourse around it made Pikamee more cognizant of how her gaming preferences would by publicly analyzed if she kept streaming on such a big public platform.

To my knowledge, the VTuber group Pikamee worked for (VOMS Project) has not provided a specific explanation for Pikamee's graduation or responded to questions about whether it was Harry-Potter-related. For some reason, they're reluctant to touch this controversy made of smaller controversies and plugged into a much larger one with a 10-foot virtual pole.

Anyways, the Internet reacted typically. By which I mean that marginalized groups (in this case mostly trans VTuber fans) worried about their safety, a vocal minority proved them right, and most people don't care. A lot of Pikamee fans have blamed trans people, their allies, and the broader LGBTQIA+ community for Pikamee not streaming any more, which is ridiculous.

Even if the Hogwarts Legacy controversy is the only reason Pikamee graduated, it's not necessarily related to trans stuff. JKR has other questionable political beliefs, many of which leaked into her work. There's also the fact that alt-right/GamerGate figureheads played leading roles in the game's development. Put this together and you have a game whose primary sin is not being connected to (and directly supporting) a transphobe, but having an antisemetic plot.

And even if it was just the trans stuff...blaming all trans people for the actions of Pikamee's critics is just...pointless, unjust, and dumb. Also a form of bigotry in and of itself. I doubt these people would react well to all white women being blamed for the shit JK Rowling writes. And for that matter, I'm willing to bet real-world money that more of the critics were VTuber fans than LGBTQIA+. If you're going to blame unrelated people for the backlash, shouldn't you focus on people who share demographics with an overwhelming majority of the critics?

The transphobic shit being done in Pikamee's name covers the whole spectrum of Internet activity. On one hand, some people are doing things like drawing Hatsune Miku burning a trans pride flag, which would be charmingly lolrandom if it wasn't also transphobic. On the other hand, there's the typical harassment and slur-tweeting and shit, either trying to make queer people feel unwelcome in their communities or expressing anger at them which achieves the same end result.

Pikamee is as eager to address the controversy as VOMS is, but most fans (including the ones that don't really care about the controversy) agree that the anti-trans backlash is not how Pikamee wants her community to act. They think that fans should adopt Pikamee's generally easygoing attitude to her graduation.

But some people are angry, and won't let things like that get in the way of lashing out. And contrary to what certain pundits imply, trans people make a very easy target.

My favorite part of illustrating is the sketching phase! Followed by inking and coloring, however I had noticed something that made me think...

And then it hit me...

THE MIKU BANG(S)

Without even thinking, my muscle memory always prompts me to draw the Miku Bang (or that large chunky bang between a character's eyes). Its obviously not called that, but it was sort of an inside joke during college with @skelelock without any hate for it or towards Vocaloid.

It was a stylistic choice that most people influenced by anime/manga seem to do whether intentionally or unintentionally and thats fine. I had downloaded tons of Vocaloid songs to my phone and even cosplay several different characters from the fandom back in the day, so I understand the appeal. My only struggle was trying to move away from this sort of style because, like most artists, their style evolves as they continue their creative journey. I personally didn't want to focus on this anime style, that's not to say no one should, but it just wasn't for me when I got into college.

I spent all of high school trying to draw anime because that was my goal back then, however its now become like a "battle" to break that habit. I still love anime, but I found a different style that I enjoyed more: in fact I found several, so my journey is still not done!

This particular style just had an awful representation in our "professional" setting (also known as college) which is DUMB!

There is nothing wrong with anime being what inspired someone to get into art. Its how I started and you can clearly see some references to it in my work. Now when I in that transition phase of finding my art style, it was usually when I was told that my art had big eyes and other exaggerated features that made my professors and colleagues say that it was still anime. (See below finished piece for context)

Now this isn't the "traditional" anime style, but I was trying to focus on getting into children's & middle grade book illustration and publishing so of course I'm still not going to drawing hyper-realistically. That field of work is still filled with exaggeration between styles, but again, because when I started college doing anime art, my brain has now associated anything I create that even remotely looks like anime as "bad".

WHICH THAT MINDSET IS OBVIOUSLY TERRIBLE TO HAVE SO I HOPE NO ONE HAS TO GO THROUGH THAT.

But because that's how my work and I were perceived at the start, having the feedback be rather negative, its become a very long almost healing journey to repair my way of thinking. Now the funny thing about this whole thing is, I truly believe that the professionals, teachers and mentors I met through college all were not trying to be negative on purpose.

It was them trying to push me outside of my comfort zone.

Everyone's creative journey and artistic ability is different, so please try to not beat yourself up over feedback/critiques. If you want to be good at something, a hobby, an artistic style, etc. You need to practice.

You will get discouraged, but thats just part of the process.

2021 year in review

It’s crazy to think I have to sit down and write another one of these because *surely* it hasn’t been a whole year .. surely?? Σ(°Д°υ) But Christmas definitely happened, and so did New Years ... So I guess it has to be. 

I worked the entire year from home. In January, we finished up bits and pieces at Trackdown, and then the end of January I switched studios to Blue Bandicoot, to work on a reboot of an existing web series. It was so much fun! (ෆ˙ᵕ˙ෆ)♡ It’s just a small studio, only 7 of us, most friends I already knew, so it’s very tight knit and friendly, with kinder deadlines and more relaxed notes. 

Though I mostly worked from home, I did get to visit the studio now and again, which was nice. Everytime I visited me and Pat got to have a mini Blue Mountains holiday! 

Unfortunately annoying stuff happened,  we had record breaking floods that closed the studio for a bit (Short street in Port was underwater! The water was as high as the train bridge in wauchope! What!! )

And of course Covid got worse, as it tends to do, cases exploded causing us to have an -incredibly- long lockdown ... it was around 4ish months for most people, though I had to suffer a month longer because I had to wait to be fully vaccinated 😭It was torture not being able to visit my friends or do -anything- vaguely interesting outside ... 

Thankfully work was enjoyable, and helped the time pass very well. Those 5 months as well as the whole year went by in a flash! Σ(ﾟ口ﾟ;) I was pretty tired from working everyday so didn’t really have as much time or energy to draw as usual, but I managed to find some other creative outlets! For example ...  Figure photography! 

This year I made a figure collection instagram account specifically as a way to document all my figures, but now it’s sort of become a fun way to experiment with figure photography and I’ve already made a few sweet friends in the community. (ˊ•͈ ◡ •͈ˋ)

Our figure collection pretty much exploded this year lol, I suppose the thrill of looking forward to a package arriving helped the monotony of having to stay at home every day. I promise I’ll slow down somewhat next year haha ;;;

Also, figures made our annual easter egg hunt even more fun! :D

The figures are a nice way to rediscover things I used to like when I was younger. Similarly, I’m trying to rediscover my love for piano too. The passion was always there, but kind of stamped out of me by a dumb ex (like my love for figures). So this year I bought a keyboard to re-learn my old pieces and learn some new ones. I’ve almost got Stars Appear down, which makes me really happy ^_^

Other ways I battled lockdown blues, is VRchat! You can play for free without the VR, so it’s a really fun way to hang out with friends. I also love having people see me as Sakura Miku rather than the blob monster I am in real life lol. 

One of my resolutions was to animate something outside of work, and I’m really happy I was able to ace that resolution by joining some re-animated collabs! I’ve completed 4 shots all up for a Rapsittie Kids and Sailor Moon collab, and plan to do more for those ones - and I’ve signed up for a K-ON! and Scott Pilgrim collab as well, which I’m really looking forward to ^_^

I also tried animating my own faux anime clip, which is something I’ve been wanting to do for a while now. I learnt a lot just through that short clip and am keen to try it again with my own characters!

And speaking of firsts / milestones, I entered my first Piapro x Sega Prize collab! I hope to enter more in the future, not in the hopes to win but just for an excuse to design another cute miku outfit and be part of an official collaboration!

What are some more highlights ...

I upgraded my working space with a standing desk (which I got for free!) and replaced my old crappy chair / keyboard / mouse with pretty pink ones :D

Tried omurice for the first time! And loved it :D 

Discovered my new favourite album of all time (so far anyways) - Nurture by Porter Robinson! Musician is such a bop, I’d be interested to see if any other songs ever top it in my lifetime haha xD

Got into Space Boy :D It’s an amazing Webtoon and is proving to be wonderful inspiration for my own Webtoons ^_^ I love it so much I became a Patron!

Even though most of the year was spent in isolation, we did managed to go on 1 trip before the lockdown happened - we travelled to the Southern Highlands for their ‘Southern Pielands Pie Trail’ event they run every June. I tried so many pies (research for webcomic I swear!) Also probably the first and last Pie and Wine tasting I’ve ever experienced :0

Speaking of pies, I also discovered my new favourite cafe Tokyo Lamington! They do lots of japanese inspired pies (beef sukiyaki, chicken curry, pork katsu sausage rolls!?) they also do Onigiri and of course the stars of the show, Lamingtons in all kinds of wonderful flavours :D

Also me and Mel got to check out the beautiful Monet and Friends exhibit, it was pretty amazing!

In last year’s ‘year in review’, I got a bit scared about all the death happening around me and was paranoid for what was to come ... I did unfortunately have to suffer yet another loss, my Nan ... It was heartbreaking, and I have so many memories with her that I wont ever forget, but she was suffering a lot, so in a twisted way I’m glad she doesn’t have to be in pain anymore and gets to hang out with Pop again 💖

But, I don’t want to end this on a low note. Here’s some fun things that happened too!:

Pat’s family threw a late surprise dinosaur themed birthday party since we both had our birthdays during lockdown! It was so wholesome, everyone had dinosaur face paint and there were dinosaurs everywhere!

It was the year Ellen opened up her own florist! I’m incredibly proud of her and looking forward to seeing how her little shop grows, its already been getting a lot of support!

We finally got a new car, a Honda CRV! Curvy! Ka-ru-bi ... Kirby? Will that name stick? Stay tuned haha

Annnd speaking of lucky expensive things lol, we were gifted a DSLR! So now I can take professional photos of Charlie :D

That’s about it for 2021!

Last year my goals were:

“have a decent plan, concept art, chapter ideas, script and little animations done for Little Bakers”

Well, I’ve got a fairly comprehensive plan, a little bit of concept art, plenty of chapter ideas and the script is done for the 1st chapter! I didn’t get around to the animations though, but maybe those will come in 2022 :D

“hopefully I can do at least one little animation of my own!”

I did 5 animations outside work! 💪

Hmm, I didn’t do this, and I’m starting to think my animations should just live on my main social medias, no reason making any new ones :)

I drew 9 Miku drawings in 2021 xD So I definitely smashed that goal!

I don’t really know what to expect for 2022, but rather than being nervous I’m quite excited to see what it brings. My job contract will finish at the end of January, and then I’ll be able to have time for Etsy, commissions, and conventions (covid permitting). The biggest thing though will be that I’ll have time to seriously work on my new Webcomic, Little Bakers!

It’s gonna be a fun time :D
