What's Hornblower + what's it about? It looks interesting

Ok! So Hornblower is a miniseries and book series about the British navy from the French Revolution through the Napoleonic Wars (miniseries is only to the middle of the Napoleonic Wars) following the fictional character Horatio Hornblower! :33333 The original series is by C.S. Foster and is 11 books long! This time period is one that I'm not super into but these series is soooo good. I've always had a little interest in naval history so I find it very fun!

All the characters are very likable and there is never a dull moment. I can't exactly put my finger on why, but it is a bit like TURN but on the high seas and the characters are more likable. It is also a bit like Pirates of the Caribbean but no magic and no cringe (hooray!), the series is good all the way through! If you like James Norrington from PotC then you will like Hornblower. However, a lot of characters die which is sad, don't get attached. There are a lot of jokes making fun of France which is kinda silly.

I never have seriously kinned a character until now: The protagonist Horatio Hornblower is spectacular. He is a little silly guy little blorbo. He gets into shenanigans (war). The shenanigans seriously make me giggle sometimes. OH OH and he is good at playing the card game whist. :) and he's a little autistic (and we love that), every jokes goes over his head...autism creature incarnate!

I'm not integrated into the fandom quite yet but there is a little one here on Tumblr! I have some posted with the Hornblower tag, at least. Here is a link to the series on Internet Archive is anyone is interested in watching it! :)

The singular case of the Three Holmes

This is some Sherlockian fan art. I loved all three modern versions of Holmes and wanted to reference them in one drawing. Then, it started to grow, because it seemed a shame that others who'd played Holmes, and the Watsons, and even Moriarty, weren't in the drawing. And this is the result. This, for one reason or another, took me just under a year to create. I was going through some issues to do with age, with arthritis, and confidence. I also had a huge detour of six months working on train scripts for Open Simulator, which sort of knocked my visual creativity out of me for the duration (I even missed this year's Jenny Everywhere Day artwork).  I restarted this after turning 66. Arthritis is creeping up on me in my hands, feet, and knee. But, I'll draw for as long as I can. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The characters/actors shown are...

that post about asoiaf artwork and dark skin makes me think about those ar/ya stans on here that threw a bitch fit in the last few days over some artists drawing her with 'darker' skin while drawing Sansa with lighter skin. so they accused the artists of racism while simultaneously implying that ar/ya looks worse in the artwork as opposed to Sansa because the artist gave her darker skin......which is literally racist and colorist as shit? honestly can't imagine stanning a 10 year and being this weird and bitter on tumblr dot com but anyway

It’s like yeah sure, i think when george was coming up with the “northern look” that northern “coloring” he was thinking of was more similar to the way that like, a lot of welsh people have dark hair and a sort of, olive-tan coloring to their skin (think catherine zeta jones or ioan gruffudd) that makes them look darker than your average brit but usually in a “maybe they’re spanish?” kind of way rather than a “that’s a person of color” kind of way.

but death of the author, first of all, and second of all, depending on what your baseline is, “darker” coloring can look way darker in my imagination than in yours! and that “northern” coloring is vague enough that like, there’s a lot of poc who see parts of themselves in northern culture and explore that, and the Joy Of Reading is that we all see these characters differently!! me going “the starks are indigenous it’s the law” has no actual consequences for the series, someone else’s reading experience, or the fandom at large!! you can literally just block and move on if you’re that dedicated to being a loser weirdo?!?

also it’s funny that her fandom, specifically, is a breeding ground for the worst, most blatantly bigoted takes in the fandom aksjd like people will be like “oh arya is better than the other girls” arya actually loves and supports other women in canon “arya is the prettiest actually” arya herself doesn’t care about being pretty in canon “arya is gonna be a princess in a pretty castle and marry a lord” arya in canon explicitly says she doesn’t want to do that tho “arya is my lily white fave” one of arya’s besties is dornish icon edric dayne be SILENT ON WHAT ARYA IS BC U JUST WANT HER TO BE EXACTLY WHAT SHE HATES.

Unpopular Opinion: "GREAT EXPECTATIONS" Adaptations

I have seen three onscreen adaptations of Charles Dickens' 1861 novel, "Great Expectations". Needless to say, I have mixed feelings about them:

Directed by David Lean and starring John Mills, this adaptation from the 1940s seemed to be the benchmark of all versions of Dickens' novel. And for the likes of me, I cannot see why. Thanks to Guy Green and Robert Krasker's photography, it is a beautiful looking movie. The movie also featured some excellent performances, especially from Jean Simmons, Finlay Currie and Alec Guinness. However, I ended up feeling less than satisfied with the screenplay written by Lean and co-screenwriters Anthony Havelock-Allan and Ronald Neame. I found the movie's second half rushed and unfulfilling.

Directed by Julian Jarrold and starring Ioan Gruffudd, this adaptation seemed to be an improvement over the 1946 movie. I thought it did an excellent job of conveying Pip's obsession with Estella and in becoming a gentleman. And I loved Odile Dicks-Mireaux's costume designs, along with Ian McDiarmid as the attorney Jaggers. I was also impressed by Gruffudd's portrayal of "Pip" Pirrip. But . . . I thought Charlotte Rampling had been miscast as Miss Haversham. Her take on the character seemed to lack bite. And I did not care for the ending. Following a major character's death, the narrative's ending seemed to peter out in a vague manner.

Directed by Brady Hood and Samira Radsi, and starring Fionn Whitehead; this television adaptation was loathed by the critics. I actually enjoyed it, but I had some quibbles that included the heavy and unnecessary use of profanity, the resolution of Magwitch's arc occurring at Miss Haversham's home, instead of the Thames River; and Pip's fate regarding his profession. On the other hand, I really liked the performances, especially those from Olivia Colman as Miss Haversham and Ashley Thomas as Jaggers. I also liked how the miniseries conveyed how Pip's obsession with Estella and in becoming a gentleman, along with the access of easy money came dangerously close to corrupting him.

But if I must be frank, I have yet to see an adaptation of "Great Expectations" that knocked my socks off.

I’ve just purchased a copy of the bio on 5th Officer Harold Lowe (“Titanic Valor” by Inger Sheil) and it’s arriving tomorrow, I’m so excited already because he’s a remarkable character (and I think Ioan Gruffudd is the perfect casting for him especially after I found a clip of Ioan singing in Welsh)

Well, I am also going to get a copy of “Sincerely Harry” by Mike Beatty because I love Henry Wilde too much

okay i mean obviously we've gotta start with Our Flag Means Death. period piece (and EARLY C18th, that's less common than i'd like!), mundane comedy, pirates, queer as hell, lots of body and accent diversity (accent diversity!!! in a period piece!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)... if it was just a bit more accurate about boats, it'd just be my brain on the screen XD

I'm putting Elementary on here, because it's definitely in the top three Sherlock Holmes adaptations, and you can't understand me without understanding my preoccupation with early detective fiction and queer history and adaptation analysis. but Elementary specifically has Lucy Liu and a Sebastian Moran plot, which are also dear to my heart :)

Stellar Firma. weird british improv. sci-fi comedy that if you think about it too long turns sharply into existential horror. anarchist anti-capitalism. an interesting and complicated sentient computer. also i love everything Tim Meredith does, so, jot that down

on the note of sci-fi comedy that's secretly existential horror: Red Dwarf, maybe? even when it's bad, it makes for a FASCINATING encapsulation of, like, the inevitable entropy of the classic sitcom format, or late 80s/early 90s homophobia, and god knows I love to over-analyse that shit

John Finnemore's Souvenir Programme. not JUST season 9, although season 9 is also Everything To Me (queer characters! ACE CHARACTER?? complicated but generally very sweet family dynamics!! interesting format and structure!! lawry lewin is there!), but the whole show is just whimsical and silly and full of puns and historical jokes and... it's just so fucking refreshing, and Finnemore's such a good writer it makes me angry

Good Omens s1 is actually an extremely good encapsulation of my existential outlook (through the lens of christianity rather than atheism, but like... well, yeah). also: those bitches gay, and indulging in earthly delights like oysters and sushi and old books is Very Important

I really liked bookshelf's idea of putting in something you hate (and Vikings was an excellent fucking choice there), so it's gotta be Sherlock. what a wild disappointment that show was, for so very many reasons, all encapsulated by the hbomb video essay <3

Hornblower. what can I say? I watched it way too young and imprinted on the boats and learned a lot about personal and political structures in closed societies. also, Ioan Gruffudd and Paul McGann are hot.

Anyway, you can totally ignore the rest of this ask, I hope I’m not infordumping or annoying or anything but since I also got into this ship through movieverse, I thought I might introduce you to these little headcanons of mine (which again you can totally ignore them)

In King Arthur movie (2004), Ioan Gruffudd (the actor who plays Reed Richards) wears armor and it looks like Reed wearing Victor’s armor

Julian McMahon (the actor who plays Doom) starred in Charmed series where his character is a “devil evil” who had to trick his enemy into falling in love with him so that he could kill her. But it didn’t go as planned because he ended up actually falling in love with her. It’s not as simple as them living happily ever after together though because their history (their families are enemies and have been battling against each other for idk now long, maybe decades or centuries, it’s been a while since I watched the show) forbade them from being together and he still needed to kill her. He wanted to abandon his life’s purpose to be with her, but he’s coming to realize that if he truly loved her he needed to let her go and that she “deserved someone better”. It’s a tragic love story full of betrayal and pain where they both love each other but can’t be together. The point of me rambling about this? DOOMREED CHARMED AU WHERE VICTOR TRICKED REED INTO FALLING IN LOVR WITH HIM SO HE COULD KILL HIM WHEN REED’S GUARD WAS DOWN. BUT OH NO HE ACTUALLY FELL IN LOVE WITH REED???? AAAAAAAAAAA

Another, Julian McMahon as Doctor Christian Troy in Nip/Tuck series? Chefs kiss. I just think he’s extremely hot as a “sexy and naughty playboy doctor” (yes, this is literally how his character in Nip/Tuck is, sexy and naughty doctor)

Oh and did I mention Ioan Gruffudd as Doctor Henry Morgan in Forever series and Ioan as Doctor Daniel Harrow in Harrow series? Both characters are literally so Reed coded it’s insane and it’s so amazing. Henry Morgan is a medical examiner and Daniel Harrow is a pathologist so they both solve crimes through dead bodies. But like… they’re both literally so Reed Richards coded, character and personality-vise and everything. Henry is like a younger version of Reed (the one we saw in the movies) while Daniel Harrow is like a more-adult version of Reed, the funny thing is that Ioan as Daniel Harrow looks so much like how Reed looks in the comics. But like it’s not just their appearances, their characters (Henry, Harrow and Reed) have SO MANY THINGS in common in terms of personality.

A bonus is that Henry Morgan’s enemy, Adam, and Henry’s relationship with Adam also reminds me so much of DoomReed.
