Why so many mentions of Barb in S4? Because it's not just about Nancy

@chirpsythismorning @lilitblaukatz I finally have a theory. I didn't understand what all those mentions meant until I found another one in 4x01.

A hidden reference, in a school project, to Barbara Henry, the woman who teached little Ruby Bridges, the first African-American child to attend the all-white William Frantz Elementary School, New Orleans. Barbara, Henry and William. And El had Henry as a mentor...

EDIT (spoiler of The First Shadow) There's another mention in . The name of main character of the play in the play (Joyce's play) the Dark of the Moon, is Barbara Allen.

So, if most of these Barb mentions/references are connected to Will and El, maybe she's not just important for Nancy's arc, but the writers are also using her story to hide hints about Will and El's story.

I talk about the references here and here. For example, Lenora is in Santa Barbara County, the hint being 805, the area code number on the Surfer Boy Pizza van. There are two Barbaras in Brenner's crossword puzzle, the day of the massacre. This means twin imagery= Willel (and Henry/Edward) and maybe different timelines.

Another twin imagery is in S2. The owls.

Also, Rick's house, where Eddie is hiding, is at 2121, Holland RD. Barbara Holland. 2121, another twin imagery, and 12 mention (the number associated with Will), but reversed. Rick is a reference to Dr Richard Brenner, mentioned in two articles in S1 (here). One of them is The boy who came back to life. The kids also say that there are 12 Ricks... I don't think these are coincidences.

So, S1 is all about the boy in the UD and the girl who escaped from the lab. Brenner refers to them as the boy and the girl. Will and El, the keys to save the world. In fact, this is the first question Joyce asks after Will's vanishing: 'Where are they?' (the keys) After they showed a key on the wall and keys on the table in Hopper's house.

Also, close up of the number of Hopper's badge, in his first scene: 380 (11) Imo, a hint that Will and El are the keys, and Joyce and Hopper are their parents.

But S1 is also about finding Will and another girl, Barb. So my theory is that Barb represents El and the writers hid some important hints in their parallels.

The boy and the girl

Barb is bleeding when she's taken to the UD, and her attack is different from what happens to Will. But she's attacked right after the scene in Will's room, where Should I stay or should I go starts playing, and the light gets brighter, something that only happens when El and Vecna use their powers. Also, Joyce sees the Demogorgon in the wall. They connected Barb to Will.

Another connection. El finds them in the void, and Joyce helps her. She helps El to find the boy and the girl, a parallel with her trying to find the keys in 1x01. And if Will is one of the keys, Barb represents the other key, El.

If this is true, what are the hints about Will and El's story?

1. Water. They find Will's fake body in the quarry, and in S1 there are random shots of lakes. Something bad happened in the past (more here and here)

Barb is taken in a pool, and water is important in the show, but it's mostly associated with danger/death. They mention another death in the quarry in 1976. Will has the first vision of the UD in 1x08, when he's washing his hands, and a vision of the Mind Flayer after he washes them in S2. El sees Heather in the bathtub, Billy sees the Mind Flayer in the shower. The song when Hopper and Joyce revive Will (I don't want to swim forever... When it's cold I'd like to die- the same song that plays when Max dies). And Owens says that El is going to drown in the water tank.

This scene in S2 also seems to hint at a parallel between El and Maria's drowning scene in the movie Frankenstein.

And after the shot of Maria walking towards the lake, they show the radio and the number 11. Maybe this means that in the past El died, too, and was revived?

Also, the first time Will communicates with Joyce, she only hears him breathing. Then she tells Hopper that she knows her son's breathing. But in 1x08 Will is not breathing. In S2, when he sees the storm, he feels frozen, like when you can't breath or move or do anything. He says it again in S3, three times. In S2 Becky says that Jane wasn't breathing, and the first thing Terry says to El is: Breath.

And this is also connected to the other big hint hidden in Barb's story.

2. The official "cause" of her death, the experimental chemical asphyxiant (so she couldn't breath) is a parallel with Agent Orange and a hint about the real connection between Willel and Hopper

In S3, Will, El, Hopper and Joyce are all connected to the word orange. I didn't notice it when I watched S3 years ago, because I didn't know Hopper's backstory, but now...

Robin sees a pretty girl with read hair and says: 'Twelve o'clock!' Orange and 12 mention. Will.

Then El explodes the cup of another girl. Curiously, another redhead. Imo, another twin imagery that connect the two scenes. Also, there are four cups: Hopper, Joyce, Will and El. And the guy's outfit reminds me of a lab orderly. (I'm not forgetting Jon. I just thinks he is Lonnie's son)

In this shot the word orange is behind Lucas, but he's telling Hopper that the Mind Flayer destroyed his cabin: Hopper's connection to the events of 1959 and the curse are haunting him and his family?

Then my favorite part, because it connects all of them to Agent Orange and the keys.

Murray gives Jon and Nancy the keys of his house.

Then we see one of the keys, Will, with Joyce. When she hugs him he says that he can't breath.

And even when the camera moves on Hopper and El, we can still hear him saying 'I'm suffocating'.

And here. Billy (William), El and the Mind Flayer/Henry, the other person connected to the curse.

The reason why I decided to analyze Barb's connection to Will and El is a strange detail in S4.

When El blames Brenner for all the deaths, the flashback shows Bob's death first, then Barb's. But in 4x02 the journalist says that it all started with Barb's death. I'm not sure what this "error" means. The only thing I could think of is the score at the Arcade in S2.

11 comes before 12 but in the Dig Dug score it's second. Barb dies before Bob, but in the flashback they show her death after his. Maybe this is also about something in Will and El's past? There's still a lot to analyze.

And, of course, Barb is very important for Nancy's arc, too. I just noticed a connection to other characters and wanted to see what it could mean.

Just subjected my mother to this rant, so now you guys are going to hear it as well:

I've recently been watching (or rewatching in my mother's case) American Horror Story. I had seen parts of various seasons before but not all the way through. I just wanted to clarify that to make the point that I was aware of the general tone and severity of the show. I had seen some comparisons to how Don has gone 'too American Horror' in the show, and I understood the comparison but didn't realise how damn close.

I'm towards the end of Season 6 right now (Roanoke), and I have noticed blatant parallels between events on AHS and how the legacy characters have been treated in Chucky.

1. Nica's dismemberment (and arguably her treatment in Cult as well). In Asylum there is the Nazi Doctor guy (I can't remember his name) Who repeatedly sexually assaulted patients, much like Foley did to Nica in Cult of Chucky, and also imprisoned and dismembered a patient. Once again, a strong parallel to Tiffany dismembering and imprisoning Nica.

2. Andy's imprisonment with the colonel in Season 2. Where he was imprisoned and cannibalised over the span of a year, similar to how the Polk family in Roanoke imprisoned people before eating parts of their body.

3. Kyle losing her ear in the explosion. Whilst the way the ear was lost is different in this example, it just feel like the significance of two characters losing their left ear and there being a certain focus on it is strange. There was the close-up shot of Kyle as she showed the prosthetic to Nica and Glenda in Chucky whilst there is a close-up shot Lee's ear being put in a jar in Roanoke.

Now, here's the point I want to make, the issue I have is not necessarily what happens on its own, but in the context of the different shows.

American Horror Story, especially now, is so well known that you have a degree of understanding when it comes to what to expect. You know it's going to be dark, and you also know that it will impact the characters, and no one is safe because it's a different story every season. You know there will be the trauma and the effects of that because it's not something that has to be continued in the next season.

However, with Chucky, this isn't the case. This is a continuous story that has been going for over 35 years now. Plus, the series was never intended to be that dark. There is supposed to be comedy, and it's supposed to be camp, and if dark shit happens, it usually happens to minor characters or additional antagonists.

That's why this level of horror doesn't work. Not only is it the fact that this is happening to legacy characters who fans have grown to love and root for over years, it's the fact that the actual trauma they have experienced is just glossed over or played off basically as a joke.

It just doesn't work, and it's one of the main issues I have with the show as a whole. It also feels kinda disrespectful that the legacy characters who have been surving this stuff for years suffer with this whilst the teens who seem to NEVER LEARN from their experiences manage to escape similar fates every time (because honestly, we all know the teens will be out of those dolls by the end of 4x01 if the show gets renewed)

More Willel and Twelvegate in S2

Old and new things I noticed.

2x02 The half way happy scene

In Hopper’s cabin there’s so much yellow and red I could post twenty screenshots. I love it, and I love that Hopper’s secret knock spells “US” (his family) But to me the most interesting thing is when he and El have breakfast. There’s a owl on the table and a bottle in front of two “little people”, a red one and a yellow one. But they’re only in this scene in S2, when El says that she’s half way happy. Only in 4x01, when she’s with Will, sheìll say that she’s twice as happy.

Same episode. 

Bob shows Jon how to use the camera, a Back to the future Easter egg. When he says how to zoom in, it’s 5:42 (5+4+2=11)

And when it’s 5:43 (12), he says “And double u to zoom back out.” Double u (you?) Twins?

But this moment is also interesting because the Willel hint is not there when Joyce rewatches the tape. The time is different. So, different timeline? But what does it mean for Will and El? Why does the hint about them exist in one timeline but not in the other?

2x03. In the Phineas Gage scene, that is about Will, behind Mr Clarke there’s the news about Kathryn D. Sullivan, the first American female astronaut who stepped outside her spacecraft, on October 11, 1984. Also, the two Extras?

Later, Hopper and Owens mention leaks spreading into Hawkins, like Will says. They say it twice. Also, some red and yellow.

2x05. I just rewatched S2 to be sure. We only see the number twelve on Bob’s car in this scene (the same sticker is on Steve’s car in S4). When Will is possessed and they’re trying to find Hopper.

And I just noticed this parallel between Will and El.

While Will is trying to find Hopper, El is trying to communicate with Terry, and there’s a red X on the blanket like the X on the drawing, and a lamp that looks a lot like the disco ball of the snow ball, the one at the Arcade and at Rink-o-mania. The ball represents the Mind Flayer (I made a post about it) Not a good sign. 

Like the song we hear when El arrives at Terry’s house, Green green grass of home. A man dreams about coming home only to realize that his family is dead and it’s all an illusion because he is actually in prison and about to be executed. What a happy song for a reunion with “mom”. Oh, and there’s also the name Peter on the truck. And if Henry is Peter, yeah. Not a happy reunion.

2x06 At the lab, after Owens’ little experiment and Hopper being very protective of Will

I'm the "we all agree it was lying right" anon. I just watched some scenes from 2x04 (the one where Carlos introduces TK as a friend). The theme of that episode - people feeling safe in their relationships - made me think about 4x01. Since it aired, I've sympathized with both TK and Carlos. Carlos because of how he felt when he was younger and having to deal with it all alone, and TK, because he'd been lied to for so long and didn't get a chance to express any frustration about it. I kept thinking, "Ah TK's grown so much coz he didn't run away, he was patient, named and analysed his emotions, and showed his usual concern for others' wellbeing."

But after the 2x04 rewatch, I'm thinking about what that internal emotional analysis must have been for TK - "okay so Carlos hid this important thing from me, he lied to me for so long, what do I think or feel about it?" And his mind must have immediately gone to "his lies were about him, his past, his fears and insecurities and not really about me or us" because TK was THAT secure about their relationship. TK's growth must have helped, but surely a lot of that credit for TK feeling that level of security goes to Carlos. Carlos has been able to convince TK about his love for him completely, that maybe the lie registers as a lie, but not at all as an indictment of their relationship.

Since 4x01 aired, the fact that it was a long-term lie keeps nagging at me so much. The lie itself and the duration bothers me but maybe it's because I've never experienced any relationship where I feel THAT safe. It seems so unbelievable to me, almost like it's an idealized instance which could never actually happen between two real people. What do you think? Can people feel so secure that a long-standing lie wouldn't bother them very much?

Yes I think people absolutely can feel so secure that something like this wouldn't bother them very much. I don't think it would be the most common reaction to it, but it's certainly not impossible. I also hope that they do give TK a bit more space to express the fact that this was upsetting and destabilizing even if he understands Carlos's reasons, I think that would be a really healthy thing for him to be allowed to show, that kind of like "I'm upset and I wish you hadn't done this but I still love you" sort of thing that happens all the time in stable, healthy relationships (romantic as well as platonic and familial.)

I also think there's a tendency (and do I do this too? Absolutely) to sort of project your own emotions onto a character. So "I wouldn't forgive Carlos so easily if I was the one engaged to him" easily becomes "if TK reacts differently than I would, it's unrealistic." It's sort of the same mindset that leads to people saying they wanted TK to have to *earn* his forgiveness after the break up (although its rare anyone ever lays out exactly what that means or what it would look like). There's a bit of "I wouldn't have forgiven him immediately, so Carlos shouldn't either" in that, and from my view, TK doesn't have to earn anything. He deserves forgiveness because Carlos forgives him and that's that.

So I hope they show TK having a few more emotions about this, and I hope they show Carlos explaining why he kept the secret and apologizing, because that's how I would want that to play out if I were the one writing it. But if TK doesn't have those feelings, I mean sure ,maybe it's a bit of a cop-out on the writers' part. There's that. But maybe it's also okay for someone to just forgive someone else, without all this highly Christian and American notions of earning it and the concept of 'accountability' that is always purposely vague and has been thrown around so much it's become meaningless. Not telling anyone else what to do but it's been good for me, having been raised in a culturally Christian and Western society, to question why we're so married to the language of penance and repaying debts and earning forgiveness, and why we think those things are so universally irremovable from the concept of justice.

3x01 Exposed

A local FBI case involving two murdered women and a sea of powerful men turns into a manhunt for the dangerous leader of a far-reaching criminal enterprise.

This is Part 3 of the 1st FBI Crossover. Alexa Davalos joins the show as Kristin Gaines. This crossover would also be the introduction of Luke Kleintank as Scott Forrester on FBI International. Alexa and Luke starred opposite each other in Prime Video's alt history thriller The Man In The Castle. That is my next set of gif sets that I will be working on.

3x02 Patriots

New Fugitive Task Force member Kristin Gaines joins Jess and the team as they head to DC to find a dangerous fugitive from the January 6 Capitol riot.

3x03 Tough Love

When a judge known for serving harsh sentences to juveniles is murdered, the team looks into his lengthy list of cases in the hunt for his killer; Kristin faces family hurdles while resettling with her teenage daughter in New York City.

3x04 Inherited

The team must determine if the kidnapping of a young Chinese-American woman is a random hate crime or if she was specifically targeted; Jess and Sarah struggle with Tali's continued rebellious streak.

Trivia: We meet CIA Agent Kevin Miller in this episode. Kristin asks him about the interest the Chinese have in CRISPR tech. Kevin will show up later in 3x22 A Man Without A Country.

3x05 Unhinged

After a deadly fire at an arcade, the team discovers the blaze was just the first step in an intricate plan to exact revenge on one of the victims; Hana rejoins the team, finding new adjustments in all aspects of her life.

Trivia: There is a blooper in this episode. When Hana and Kristin are talking to the loan shark you can see a wedding ring on Kristin's hand. Later when Kristin talks to Hana and Sheryll she tells that she's divorced from Nick.

3x06 Lovesick

The team attempts to hunt down a family annihilator before he continues his murder spree; Barnes' intrusive mother puts pressure on her marriage.

3x07 Gladiator

The team investigates the murder of a professional basketball player's wife, who was a famous lifestyle guru; Kristin and her ex-husband grow closer; special agent Isobel Castille checks in with the team on the high-profile case.

3x08 Sport Of Kings

After a prized Kentucky racehorse is stolen and its groomer is taken hostage, the team quickly learns they may be the only ones who consider the young woman's safety a priority over the horse's; Byron returns to celebrate the holidays with Jess.

3x09 Run Hide Fight

While holiday shopping, Barnes and Jess are caught in the middle of a mall shooting; Gaines, Hana and Ortiz try to help from the outside, knowing their team's family members are inside and at risk.

Trivia: This episode marks the introduction of David Hudgins as the new showrunner for FBI Most Wanted. It is also the first episode that follows a new format of jumping right into the action.

3x10 Incendiary

The team hunts for a young man who is using napalm-style bombs to attack his targets; with Tali away, Jess and Sarah begin to adjust to their empty nest.

3x11 Hunter

The task force chases a killer who plays a twisted game of cat and mouse with his victims; Hana shares something personal about herself with her new roommate, Ortiz.

3x12 El Pincho ( 7 Parts )

The team searches for a notorious Colombian drug lord after he escapes from a U.S. prison; Kristin begins to open up to her ex-husband about her past.

Trivia: This is the episode that delves into Kristin's past in Miami. We'll learn more in 4x03 Succession.

3x13 Overlooked

The team searches for a businessman wanted for murder and an embezzlement scheme; Jess takes advantage of his empty nest to properly court Sarah.

3x14 Shattered

The team pursues an abusive man who is on the hunt for an ex-girlfriend trying to escape him; Jess and Sarah make plans to take their dream vacation together.

Trivia: This is the final episode with Julian McMahon as SSA Jess LaCroix.

3x15 Incel

The team must track down a murderous member of the incel community targeting those he believes never give him a chance; Barnes, Hana, Ortiz and Kristin deal with their grief in the wake of Jess' death.

Alexa Davalos is marked as the lead actor for this episode. This is the first time in the FBI verse. She was the lead actor on The Man In The High Castle.

3x16 Decriminalized

The team gets called to Vermont after a married couple who grow illegal marijuana massacres their employees; Barnes begins to regret not taking any time off to bond with her new baby.

okay but there really is something so malicious about how supernatural was allowed to acknowledge dean’s Intense Subtextually Gay Relationships With Men and how they’re Clearly Different From Sam’s Relationships With Those Same Men as long as it’s all directed at the other character. anyone and everyone was allowed to make cracks about cas and crowley being in love with dean for years on end but when dean admitted that his relationship with cas is different than sam’s--i lost cas and it damn near broke me--the line had to be cut. yeah these guys’ relationships with dean are different than their relationships with sam but it’s all because of them being the weird gay ones who insisted on falling in love with dean despite his valiant heterosexual effort to keep them at a platonic arm’s length. of course dean wasn’t allowed to reciprocate cas’ feelings or react to the confession or even be particularly nice to cas because if we acknowledge that dean is part of the reason deanandcas is so different from samandcas then we’re also acknowledging that the gay subtext isn’t just coming from cas but from dean too, which means we’re acknowledging the possibility that our all-american marlboro man action hero isn’t straight. and we can’t have that because it failed the market research

This is an interesting shot. There seem to be two Nancies and two Robins. It makes me think about different timelines, and the description of the UD as a dark reflection of our world. Richard and Martin Brenner, Henry and Edward Creel, vengeful demon and ancient demon, Will singing If I go there will be trouble. And if I'll stay it will be double...

And the first article they read: Elvis cloned by aliens

This reminds me of the line in the Horoscope in 4x01: In the year following your birthday by sending your copy of Star-Signs letter (and the address, Lakeview, could be another hint at the car crash in 1976. I just love that theory, ok? lol)

But all the titles intrigue me.

Man Finds Gold Mine and Strikes It Rich. I'm thinking about the caves in Nevada where Henry disappeared when he was seven. And Rich could be a reference to Richard Brenner. It could mean that he is the Brenner we see in The First Shadow. More aggressive, more obsessed. In 1x03, Hopper tells Powell that Martin Brenner runs the lab, but the name mentioned in the article is Richard. Then Hopper says that maybe Will was in the wrong place at the wrong time (like young Henry, who was near the lab where Brenner was conducting his experiments?)

Powell is not convinced tho and says: It's a rich. And Hopper replies: It's a start. Maybe that's the truth. Richard is the start. The beginning.

And after this dialogue, they go to the quarry where they find Will's fake body. So, a sort of clone.

Eva Gabor's psychic powers save a dog

In S1 Lucas compares El to a stray dog. And Gabor was an Hungarian-american actress, she voiced Duchess in The Aristocats and Miss Bianca in The Rescuers. I found more references to Hungary, all connected to El. The movie My Fair Lady, in the scene where El gets arrested (I talk about it here) At some point in the story, the main character Eliza dances with a Hungarian man, who declares that she's a Hungarian princess. But there's another Hungarian.

Inside Jayne and Mickey's Palace. This is a reference to Mickey Hargitay, a Hungarian-American actor, and the palace mentioned is his and his wife's Pink Palace. Also, Mickey, hm...

I love these details!

Just started my s4 rewatch, and I have some thoughts concerning Spencer. In 4x01 after Coop got shot, we see him at his dad's grave lamenting about all the things that briefly went right, saving South Crenshaw High, his scholarship, he got named an all american, he got his girl and even said he was happy for the first time. Only to end the scene by saying, "maybe people like us ain't supposed to have it all." Then again, when planning Billy's funeral at the church, he said probably one of the most heartbreaking lines I've heard on the show, "in two years, I lost Shawn, my dad and coach Baker, maybe I'm built for moments like this."

As resilient as Spencer is portrayed to be, there's something so depressing to know that his life has prepared him more for hurt than happiness. Like that should not be the reality of any 19 year old to feel built for moments like that, but that's sadly his reality. I think that's why his relationship with Liv genuinely terrifies him because she's his happiness in the midst of everything else. Pair that up with his abandonment issues, and it makes sense why he would cling on to her for dear life. He's constantly weary about being happy for too long because he knows life will knock him down again eventually. He has some of the most heartbreaking lines throughout the show, and I'm noticing it more on my rewatch. He's a true tragic protagonist, which makes me hopeful that he'll get his happy ending one day, even if the show doesn't give it to us onscreen.

Do you know that his line "maybe I'm built for moments like this" had me weeping? Nice catch about the parallel with what he says at his father's grave.

I do think we'll see him get his happy ending onscreen. He practically got it at the airport.

I completely agree with you. This is a gorgeous, heartbreaking analysis of Spencer. And I really like the use of the term "tragic protagonist." Love that this rewatch has you making connections and digging deeper into his characterization.

How to improve the mentorship arc, an essay by me

What doesn’t sit well is that we haven’t really seen Kara acting as a star reporter long enough to justify her being assigned junior reporters to mentor. They did the best they could with the opening montage, but we didn’t see any hard-hitting questions, and seeing the effects of her work ethic just isn’t enough to justify not seeing the ethic for ourselves.

So, how do we preserve the Kara-as-a-mentor arc without making it feel forced?

Let her stumble into it. There’s a new batch of reporters coming in, and she runs into one in the elevator. She spots Nia’s coffee-stained skirt and goes “ohhhhh no, no, no, I’ve got a trick for that” and pulls out an old executive assistant’s trick to remove/hide the stain.

She runs into Nia again in the breakroom, and starts conversating, and Nia shares why she wants the fashion piece. Kara is blown away and goes “that, do that”.

Kara is part of the pitch meeting (not observing like a school principal, wtf), and looks expectantly to Nia when fashion comes up. That scene can play out the exact same way, except the follow up happens in the women’s bathroom a little while later. 

And Kara does offer advice. Not as a quote-unquote Mentor, but as someone who has been in Nia’s shoes. “I get that it can be scary to put yourself out there, and risk rocking the boat. I was the exact same way. I was so worried about being the best that I can be that I didn’t give myself the room to make mistakes.”

“What changed?” Nia asks.

“I realized that no matter what I did, no matter how safe I tried to play it, I was going to mess up. There would always be something for Snapper to criticize. Knowing that took enough of the fear away that I could make myself take risks. And I did mess up. A lot! And at times it was awful, but making mistakes is how you grow, and improve. It made me a better reporter, and it will for you too... you just have to have enough faith in yourself to take the leap.”

And the episode would end with the next pitch meeting, where “more popular than oprah” girl pitches another rival article, but this time Nia takes a deep breath, raises her hand, and tells James why her own idea is better. James agrees, and Kara shoots Nia a smile and reassuring nod.

I wish there was more unexplained weird shit that happened in spn. like most of the weird stuff is just the brothers going oh there is something supernatural happening better go stop it. which is fine it’s a show about weird supernatural stuff happening but it feels too neat and tidy. and there’s even a lot of dropped plot threads and retcons and stupid coincidences, but it’s usually all still explained. they always have an answer even if it’s dumb. it makes the world feel too legible and bounded. it’s one of the reasons why 4x01 is so fun, because the brothers spend the entire episode trying to figure out what’s going on and the episode ends with them realising they have zero fucking clue what’s actually happening, and what’s more, the extent of their ignorance makes the world feel so much larger and unknowable.

and this is a show set on the periphery of modern american life! most notably cheap motels, 24 hour diners, and long stretches of rural road. weird stuff should be happening all the time and nobody should be able to figure out what is happening or why
