“When I lost you, I was lost too, in this place… In this place, there’s something (nothing) more…” — This Place by Nicolas Snyder
Rewatched “Scavenger’s Reign” and it gave me the urge to draw something in a way inspired by the beautiful landscapes in the series. I’m out of practice with environmental illustrations, but this was a very calming one to make.
Trees so tall their canopies are lost to the eye, but their seeds drift down in gentle light and land among stones jutting from the ground. Not many beings get to witness it.

the blorbos
Tumblr media
This took a while because I wasn't sure about some visuals but I love my blorbos and how they ended up.
For anyone new to my characters, on the left is Neal, the professor of acoustics, sound manipulation, and other physical stuff that people of this time period can't differentiate very well. He lives a simple normal sloman life.
On the right is "bio man" (I still need to come up with names for 80% of my characters even though I have had them for ages). He teaches everything biology-related in a small school in a completely different country. But he would rather travel and discover the nature of the world (which he does with Neal in the story).
If it's not clear, they enjoy each others company (or at least will). This picture is for me to feel warm and to show the different ways they look at the world. It's abstractly set in the future where Neal gets to have a basic fasion sense and more open feelings.

The incident
Event log Day: 349 Subject ID: A008 Status: Post-exposure to Archframe prototype Subject A008 displayed elevated aggression levels following prolonged exposure to the Archframe prototype. Blood tests performed at 16:22 revealed a significant spike in cortisol levels (245% above baseline), suggesting a heightened stress response. Despite verbal commands and remote detachment attempts, Subject A008 refused to disengage from the Archframe. At 19:34, the security team initiated a manual extraction protocol, forcibly removing A008 from the biosuit. The process resulted in minor lacerations along the interface points where the Archframe’s cables had integrated with the subject’s neuro-linkage nodes. Immediate medical intervention was provided. Post-extraction: Subject A008 exhibited no further aggressive behavior, with vitals returning to normal levels. The subject retired to sleep at 22:43. Event log Day: 350 Subject ID: A008 Incident: Aggression escalation, violent interaction with Subject A149 At 03:12, security cameras recorded Subject A008 engaging in a violent assault on Subject A149 within A149‘s cell. Subject A008 was observed repeatedly biting and masticating A149, displaying a complete dissociation from prior behavior. Security intervened at 03:15, but despite efforts, Subject A149 sustained critical injuries and entered a coma shortly after the incident due to Subject A008's venom. Blood tests taken from A008 immediately after the incident showed a continued elevation in cortisol and the presence of unidentified neurochemical markers. A008 was sedated and returned to isolation. An emergency partition was erected to prevent direct interaction between A008 and the research team. Medical and psychological evaluations are ongoing. A008 has not responded coherently to any stimuli or questioning. Further investigation into the Archframe’s potential neurological impacts is underway. Event log Day: 483 Subject IDs: A008, A149 Status Update: Post-recovery and continued isolation protocols Subject A149 has regained consciousness and is in stable condition following extensive rehabilitation. Neurological damage appears minimal, though further tests are required to assess long-term effects. Subject A008 remains under close observation and has been prohibited from interacting with the Archframe or any related exosuit technologies unless under direct surveillance by an armed medical team. Aggression monitoring continues via regular blood tests, though no significant incidents have been reported since Day 350.

What’s the deal with Plague Doctors and crows? Why do they dress like crows? Why do they hang out with crows? I thought I’d let this rat-faced mad man rant about crows for a while so we could find out.
Sacred Crows
Participation in a quarantine was holy martyrdom at its far most extreme. No heaven awaited, nothing awaited. One would slam the door on existence, locking away the miasma and all within its perimeter, leaving land scraped bare a fathom down. Yet the doom that was expected never came. One Sun, one moon, against a backdrop of unfamiliar stars greeted a people whose chosen fate had escaped them. They beheld, the hinterland, the dwelling place of the disease and all it’s afflicted creatures, now servants to an indescribable reality.
Out of the reeds rose clouds of black birds, beholden to none. Doves and pigeons and quail thrived amongst mutated forms and across the plains thundered beaked, lizard-tail horses, long extinct beasts who had found in this hell, a haven. Serpents writhed in agony, fish went belly up, flies dropped like - well, flies, along side man and beast, but birds remained. Birds and whatever had preceded them in their ancient linage. Birds, were immune, such that they sheltered themselves within the very holy of holies of the adversary. Foremost among them, the sacred crow, bold enough to travel between the worlds of the afflicted and the clean, carrying nothing but messages to those left behind.
Through these particular black birds communication was established and knowledge of the hinterland dispensed. It was revealed that those who sought pilgrimage to counter the disease only worsened the spread, proving that the saints in heaven were infected, and this was not a thing of god but some infinite elsewhere.
These saints became our saints. Their relics burned and their names scratched from history, to be carved upon the floating stones that drift low over our fields on feast days, calling them down and away, least the miasma conquer heaven, and it’s lord. Some among us find these beliefs heretical, doubt is allowed given the mantra be maintained “Safety first.”
- Excerpt from the compiled histories of Darcy Milo.
