i've been losing my mind over how poetic the korean lyrics are, so i tried translating them a little more closely to the original! there are so many implications and so much nuance that it's simply impossible to fully convey them in english, due to vocab and syntax differences, so there will be a ton of translation notes below. please cry over this tragic pair with me :")

[ disclaimer: i am in no way trying to imply that the official translations are subpar, because they're actually really good — it's difficult to convey the full extent of meaning while remaining concise enough for closed captions! i just want to share my own take on the original lyrics ^^ ]

"please permit me"

허락해줘, please grant me permission; implying the person Till is singing to (henceforth Mizi, for brevity) has authority over him.

"I wish for you to..." vs "I wish..."

a slight difference in conjugation; Till wishes that Mizi will do that action for him, whereas Ivan simply wishes for things to be a certain way.

"I don't want to lose you"

놓치다, to lose something or someone by missing them or failing to catch them; implies less agency and control than "to let go."

"I plead of you, inflict wounds upon me" / "I plead of you, make it so that I am hurting"

부디, implying an earnest entreaty, a fervent plea. here, the conjugation has Till asking Mizi to give him wounds, and give him pain.

"I dissolve in you" vs "so that I dissolve into you"

there is no exact translation for 물들다 (conjugated into 물들어 and 물들게 in the lyrics), but picture this: watercolour paints soaking into a white canvas, permeating across it, imbuing it. difference in adpositions: Till says 너로, indicating "by" or "with," whereas Ivan says 네게 (너에게), indicating "to" or "towards". so for Till, Mizi is the colour and he is the canvas, whereas for Ivan, he is the colours that are spreading towards Till. difference in conjugations: Till says 물들어, in present tense and active voice, while Ivan says 물들게 [하다], to make a certain state happen (note that this is different from the ~ㄹ 게 conjugation that indicates future intention). Ivan is saying please notice my pain and heal it, so that I permeate into you, which would then quieten my unease.

"which will crumble" / "which will fade into a blur"

the ~ㄹ conjugation here is a future indicative tense; the action it describes will happen, the state it describes will come to be. 무너질, "will crumble;" to fall by crumbling, crumpling, caving in, breaking down. 흐려질, "will grow blurry;" i chose to translate this as the more poetic "fade into a blur."

"buried within eternity"

묻힌, from 묻히다, to be buried; this word can also mean "to be stained," giving the phrase an alternative meaning of "stained upon eternity."

"read me, please" / "that's right, me"

the official translation says "read my soul," which might indicate the meaning that the creators intended, but the original korean lyrics only says "me." "그래," which i translated as "that's right," can be used in many contexts with varying nuance; it is an acknowledgement and a simple, light agreement. in some contexts, it can be perfunctory, in others, it can be an acceptance.

"even if the sharp words you gave me" / "even if they leave scratches beneath my eyes"

here, Ivan is downplaying the extent of hurt that Till has inflicted upon him. Till may use sharp-edged language, but Ivan describes these words as being given to him, almost as if they are a gift, implying he treasures every word Till throws his way. the word used for "scratches" is often used to describe scrapes left by fingernails; shallow, surface-level wounds.

"even if everything is shattered, it's okay"

부숴, from 부수다, to break, smash, shatter. the official translation says "you can break me apart," which might reflect the meaning that the creators intended, but since the subject and object can be omitted in korean and still be grammatically correct, this sentence doesn't indicate the subject that is doing the breaking or the object that is being broken apart.

"now, please, look at my wounds" / "now, please, cure me"

the word for "wounds," 상처, can also be used to refer to scars, but i chose the former to indicate the open wounds that Ivan wishes Till will cure.

"just so that my unease may be dampened"

그저, "just," implying that Ivan doesn't want for much, he is only asking for this small and simple wish. 불안, unease. it's not quite as intense as "fears," though it can be an indicator of it; it's closer to worries or anxieties. 가라앉도록, from 가라앉다, to sink, to subside, to become subdued.

"above these nights, which will be drawn"

그려질, from 그려지다, to be drawn, like a sketch or painting.

"screaming into the silence, which will collapse"

the more accurate conjugation would be "screamed," but i went with "screaming" for a smoother flow. 쓰러질, "will collapse;" to fall by collapsing, fainting, passing out.

"within your pupils that gaze at me"

translating it as "eyes" would probably read smoother, but the korean lyrics use the specific word 눈동자, meaning the pupil of the eye.

"drink me, please"

the official translation says "consume me," but 마시다 (original lyric 마셔줘) means "drink." it's simple and fluid, not as forceful as "consume" or "swallow." once again, Ivan never uses harsh or violent language to describe Till's actions.

"this song without an end"

i intentionally chose this syntax to emphasise the lack of an end, and to more closely mirror that of the original. it can also be translated as "this endless song."

"towards each other, we dance"

향해, towards, indicating direction. the official translation, "face to face," can be inferred from the word, but i like the idea of them dancing towards each other, going towards each other, as if drawn together in each other's orbit. (also, the irony that in reality, it is only Ivan doing so, only Ivan going towards Till; Ivan sings this line, like he wishes it were the case, like he wishes it were mutual, even as he knows it is not.)

"our story, buried within eternity"

in the previous instance of the phrase "buried within eternity," the object is not specified. here, the clause is completed with 채, meaning "the state of." specifically, this line would be "our story, in the state of being buried within eternity."

[ and that's it — thank you for reading! please note that this is mostly a line-by-line translation, as the original lyrics are composed of distinct clauses that connect in meaning, but not in grammar. the official translation wove the clauses together in proper sentences, whereas my translation mirrors the scattered discontinuity of the korean lyrics. ]

Something that I’ve noticed about Alien Stage is that the songs that feature Luka in them have a lot of lyrics that are in English and hardly in the other songs. I know Black Sorrow (Ivan’s Song) has English Lyrics too and that could be some relations to it. There might be some correlation with why these songs have English Lyrics in them (Maybe its allegory catering to overseas/english fans of an idol as Alien Stage is a commentary on the idol industry but that could be a stretch)

Something else to mention that Luka’s and Ivan’s names are also traditionally European names but again, another stretch lol

Okay I’m normal now,, I’ll do my best to explain it and try to sell it!

It’s a series of animated music videos on YouTube created by Vivinos!

The basic plot (the way I see it) is that it’s set in a future where aliens are the superior race in the world and they own humans as kind of slaves/pets. In Alien Stage, there’s a singing competition where different aliens set their humans against each other to see which is the best. The competition has several rounds where the humans compete one-on-one, and once they perform their song, they’re judged and the one with the higher score wins and gets to go on to perform in the next round. The loser is (usually) killed onstage. The story follows a few of those humans and how their lives are based around that competition.

There’s drama! Cool concepts and really good characters! Beautiful art! Absolutely banger songs! Doomed tragic gay people!!

The songs are mostly (but not completely) in Korean, but there are English subtitles available for the videos! I don’t speak Korean but I still had a great time watching/listening, the lyrics are lovely :)

"Big Time Battle of the Bands", Chapter 11: Big Time Flirting

That afternoon, Palmwoods Park was buzzing with people from Griffin's crew. A huge stage had been set up in the park, and several stage hands were making adjustments to it. Several hundred chairs had also been put in place.

Carlos was lounging on one of the props: a black motorcycle (Griffin had insisted that cool vehicles were the "pinnacle" of youth appeal). Between the fast-approaching concert and the Logan/James feud, rehearsals had been tense. So, he was content to be on his own.

He was trying to review the song lyrics on Big Time Rush's setlist, but it was tough. Mikee and Chloe were also reviewing lyrics at the other end of the stage, and his gaze kept drifting to them.

Mikee had decided to ditch her ponytail and let her hair down. Carlos sighed as he watched the sunlight bounce off the chocolate waves. Why was someone like her (and her friends, of course) stuck under the thumb of a weasel like Hawk? he thought.

Kendall meandered by the stage, humming to himself. He was also holding a lyric sheet. He glanced up and saw Carlos eyeballing the girls. He grinned as he put two and two together.

Kendall stealthily popped up beside him. "Whatcha staring at, dude?" he asked, nearly scaring Carlos off the motorcycle.

Once Carlos had regained his composure, he shrugged nonchalantly. "Nothin'." He immediately directed his gaze back to his sheet.

The blond rolled his eyes. "Carlos, that was the worst lie you've told since we were eleven. English class? Remember?"

"Hey, you can't prove that aliens didn't abduct me and make me forget about that Shakespeare assignment thing!" Carlos argued, reddening slightly.

Kendall sighed. "Why don't you go talk to Mikee? I'm eighty percent sure she doesn't bite."

Carlos groaned and finally lowered the paper. "'Cause she's—it's—it's just—she’s the enemy!" he tried to reason. "If I talk to the enemy, Gustavo will kill me!"

Chloe had also noticed that Carlos kept glancing at her friend. Eventually, she cleared her throat and smiled. "Carlos looks kind of lonely. Why don't you go talk to him? Show him that there are no hard feelings in this whole ‘competition.’"

Mikee took one look at him and flushed. "I...I don't know, Chloe." she said hesitantly.

"C'mon, Mikee. Just because Hawk has a history with him, doesn't mean you can't be friendly."

Mikee inhaled a steadying breath. "Well..." She watched Carlos again. "Yeah, okay. Yeah, I'm gonna do it!" she said confidently. Chloe smiled back, patting her leg encouragingly.

Kendall saw this. "Looks like you won’t have to worry about making the first move, buddy." Carlos followed his eyes and double-taked. Mikee had stood up and was...walking towards him.

He tumbled off the motorcycle and landed with an "oof." Lyric sheets littered all around him. He tried not to grin like an idiot, but failed miserably.

Mikee was one-upping him in the awkwardness department. Hawk had given her a ridiculously tall pair of high heels to wear for the concert. Being a sneaker-lover, she was not at all used to stilettos. So, now, she was slipping all over the stage as she made her way over to the Big Time Rush member.

"Oh—oh boy, here we go—whoa—" she grunted as she stumbled along. Once she was only a couple meters away, she finally lost it: She tripped over a fallen mic stand, skidded the rest of the way, and landed in Carlos' arms.

The pair giggled nervously as Mikee found her balance. "Thanks for that, that was very..." She paused, unsure of how to finish that sentence. "Just, thanks for catching me."

He chuckled again. "No problem."

An uncomfortable silence followed. Mikee held up her lyric sheet. "I was, uh, just looking over my band's setlist. I saw you were doing the same, and I wanted to see how you were doing."

Carlos shrugged. "Yeah, well, y’know...the songs are great."

Mikee looked expectantly at his anxious face. "But?" she pressed.

He looked up, brows raised. "How'd you know there was a 'but'?"

She rolled her eyes, laughing. "There's always a 'but', Carlos."

He squirmed a bit. "I wish this didn't have to be a contest. I mean, we have the same goal anyway, right? We all wanna save the Palmwoods."

Mikee nodded. "I know, right? I hate making enemies. I like to hang out and have fun. I played a ton of sports in Arizona, so I guess that's why I like being part of a team."

Carlos looked up, eyes wide. "You like sports?"

"Totally. Been playin' basketball since I before I could walk." she joked, giggling.

He swallowed and asked weakly, "Do you like...hockey?"

"Oh, yeah. I actually tried out field hockey in the seventh grade. It was fun."

After grinning at each other for several moments, they looked back down at the stage. While he was looking down, Carlos noticed her shiny red heels.

"Um, cool shoes, Mikee!" he complimented.

"Thanks...they're not really my style." Her face darkened. "Hawk says that I gotta try being more ‘girly’, so..." She drifted off, feeling awkward again.

He took a better look at her: Not only was her hair down, but she was wearing mascara and blue eyeshadow, to match the blue of her irises. She had also traded in her tank top and athletic shorts for a red off-shoulder blouse and white skirt.

"But why?" he asked incredulously. "You already look awesome without any of that stuff!" The words spewed out before he could stop them. He blushed as soon as they'd left his mouth.

Mikee's head shot up. She was red, too. "Really, Carlos...?"

Carlos nodded. "Uh-huh." The butterflies in Mikee's stomach became a whirlwind. She decided that she never wanted to stop looking at his beautiful, sincere smile.

Suddenly, he gasped and pointed over his shoulder. "Hey, they just put up a concession stand that sells jumbo corndogs! Wanna grab a bite?"

When she raved, "Sure! I love corndogs!", Carlos' smile somehow brightened even more.

As they walked off the stage together, he quickly turned and gave Kendall an excited thumbs-up. Kendall grinned and returned the gesture.

"Guess we're not bad matchmakers." Chloe said, appearing by Kendall's side.

He jumped. "Oh! Uh—hey there, Chloe!" he said, trying to keep his cool. Great, he thought. He was as bad as Carlos.

She smiled affably. "Actually, with all the dancing that Hawk's been making us do, I'm famished. A corndog doesn't sound half bad right now. Or maybe one of those pink smoothies?"

His jaw dropped at the offer. "Pink smoothie? I...yeah, that'd be great! And you know what? I'm buying." he said, a crooked grin tilting his own mouth.

"It's a date." Chloe grinned. Her jet black hair swished against her back as she walked away, a striking contrast to the eye-catching yellow tee.

Well, who says we can't get a little "distracted" every now and then? he thought as he followed her.

In another area of the park, Logan was seated at a table. Papers were strewn in front of him. He figured that it was better to focus his stress on homework, and not on James and his stupid Diamond Ring.

This was proving to be a difficult task, as James had set up a "Buy One Fandana, Get a Free Comb!" vendor at the other end of the park. The faithful Ring cheered on the sidelines with streamers and pom-poms. Logan turned his eyes skyward. He had to get this "solve for x" problem done.

He was so focused on his work, that he didn't even notice the girl trip until she face-planted on his table.

"Whoa! Are—are you okay?" he gasped. The frazzled girl quickly rose up, a few stray curls falling from her bun. As their brown eyes met, Logan's heart skipped a beat: Elena. Of course.

"Sorry! Sorry! I was, um...I was practicing for the concert." she stammered, hugging a book to her chest. Her breath caught in her throat. He was even cuter up close.

Despite his surprise, Logan couldn't help but laugh a bit. "With a book?"

Elena's blush deepened as she tugged at her purple skirt, which had also gone askew. "Uh, well, Hawk told me I'm...pigeon-toed. I was studying, and I thought of the trick that models use to help them walk straight. They put books on their heads, and they just...walk, right? I tried to do it with my science book, but I...er...tripped over a soccer ball." She mentally kicked herself for rambling.

Logan didn’t know how to react. "Um...well, I've seen you dance, and you look pretty. Good! You—you look pretty good." Now he was flushing as brightly as she was. They shared a very awkward smile.

As he looked back down at the table and sighed, Elena could sense his stress. "Hey...are you okay? You seem...I dunno...kind of down." she observed.

He couldn't stop the snort that escaped his lips. "I've been better. James has been acting like a bigger idiot than usual. As you can see, he's established his very own franchise." Elena followed his scowl. She giggled at the sight of all the bandana-wearers.

"Wow...that's actually kind of interesting. Jessica's been letting the fame get to her, as well." She gestured over to another spot, not too far from James.

Jessica had set up her own vendor. Her table was hot pink, and it was straining under the weight of merchandise. A line of teens waited in front of it. The boy at the head of the line departed with a Cross My Heart cap on his head and an infatuated smile on his face.

Every time James and Jessica happened to share a look, they glared.

Elena sighed. "She's always been rather...dedicated. But, hey, look at it this way: At least their money is going towards a good cause, right? They're just helping in their own way."

Logan didn't know which astonished him more—the coincidence, or the new way of thinking she'd just given him. "Huh. Well—yeah, I guess that makes sense."

She cleared her throat and indicated his papers. "So, um, what're you doing, if you don't mind me asking?"

He snapped out of his daze and glanced down at his work. "Oh! Uh, just homework. I've been slaving over this problem for, like, ten minutes now."

She sat beside him. Logan's pounding heart was not soothed by this sudden closeness.

After some analyzing, she smiled. "'x' equals six." she concluded.

He worked through the formula, pencil scratching across the paper. His eyes widened. "Hey, that's—that's correct! How'd you do that?" he asked, impressed.

Elena shyly lowered her gaze and brushed a curl off her forehead. "I have a proposition for you. If I help you with your homework, will you help me with my coordination?" She held up her book, smiling anxiously.

Logan grinned, his dimples on full display. "Anything for a fellow braniac." As they reached for the same piece of paper, their hands touched. Following much blushing and chuckling from both of them, Logan let her take the paper. He smiled to himself. Maybe this day wasn't all bad.

Antenna — S-T (Urge)

Royal Headache had a close to decade-long run, but it was never easy. They went from dive bar shows to opening for the Black Keys within only a few years and flamed out finally in 2017, as substance abuse and interpersonal disputes took their toll. And yet, if you like your punk rock spiked with romantic tunefulness, if you harbor affection for the Buzzcocks, the Jam or, further back, the Small Faces, there just weren’t any other bands like Royal Headache. A lot of that was due to one Tim “Shogun” Wall, vocally a dead ringer for a young Rod Stewart, but scrawny, amped to the gills, grappling with the mic and stalking the stage floor, making an anthemic, super-charged racket.

Interviews suggest that Royal Headache’s rapid rise and fall left Shogun in a pretty nasty place, but now, half a decade later with Antenna, he’s back at it, making music again. We covered Finnogun’s Wake, his duo with Finn Berzin in the first Dust of 2024. Andrew Forell placed it, “somewhere between the concise attack of Shogun’s former band Royal Headache and the anthemic end of Britpop.” This five-song EP from Antenna runs faster and more punk than the last Royal Headache album, and it’s, thankfully, not as indebted to Blur/Oasis and their ilk. It’s better than Finnoguns Wake then, and as good or maybe even better than the two Royal Headache records.

“Cube,” for instance, rages headlong, double-time, in a fury of drum-bass-guitar flailing. It’s fast but precise—Shogun has put together a very capable band here—and it feels like it might fly apart at any moment but doesn’t. But where most bands operating at this pace and volume might content themselves with shouted lyrics, Shogun puts frill and ornament into the singing, nailing the tune and ending phrases in lavish, multi-toned flourishes. It’s like Tom Jones finding himself in front of Bad Brains, and it’s fun.

“English Three” bangs just as hard, slamming the one-two beat with a jackhammer intensity. Musically, it’s got an antsy, carnival glee vibe, which contrasts with the lyrics, which deal with mid-life alienation and isolation. “Don’t own me, touch me, I don’t need anybody, until the ending of the day,” declares Shogun. By the sound, you’d think it’s a stirring manifesto, but the words are more like a suicide note.

The EP ends in glory, with the seething, soaring, blue-eyed soul anthem “Antenna State,” hemmed in by with flaring guitars and Motown-style backing “oohs and ohs.” “Don’t smoke god, don’t smoke god, love should be all that you need,” wails the singer, in fluid, florid dramatics that would carry to the back rows of even the largest venues Royal Headache used to play. Maybe we don’t need religion or drugs to feel this good, but we sure do require quality rock and roll.

Hmm, if we're talking about school-school, no I don't think so. I used to say that, but I think with having experienced uni now I wouldn't like to be put back into that rigid system. If we're talking about uni though: I never ever eeeever wanna leave, so I guess that's a yes, haha

Hmmm, I don't think I've had too many unusual jobs. I used to work in hospitality every summer and then one summer I had a reeeeally cool job where I worked as a stage technician but since I'm kinda doing stuff with theater now in uni as well maybe that's not so surprising?

I think the universe is too big for us to be the only life form out there, but I don't think aliens are out here trying to abduct people or something like that

NOTE 1: First stanza was the most awkward to make and probably still is the most awkward in general. But I couldnt think of an alternative thats without even more awkward sentence structure. And I think it works out in terms of Luka uncomfortably dogpiling Mizi with compliments, while also calling her “The light and sun, my star.”

NOTE 2: Sad vs. saddened has an odd difference in nuance in my mind but using a synonym for sad felt more jarring and excessive. Left it as is because it does get the point across, and maybe its just me overthinking it, lol.

NOTE 3: Ive considered changing “I don’t believe. You’re a liar.” to something like “Dont believe it,” or “Dont believe you,” but I try not to change lyrics that are already in English. I also think the awkwardness serves to portray Mizi’s state (of struggling to sing) in Round 5 very well and that there may be some intentional play on words of taking the “You” from “You’re” to finish the first phrase, so it works out.

NOTE 4: The original translation of “The endless walls / A fall with no ground” is actually pretty interesting to ponder about and I encourage others to do so about Luka’s character!

At first, I personally interpreted it as walls being obstacles to a goal, in which, no matter how much you overcome, there is another to face. And then the fall part is simpler to understand and just illustrates the hopelessness and despair of such a situation.

Thinking more, I considered joining the two lines and perceiving the walls' “endlessness” in terms of “height,” which would be why the fall would be perceive as "with no ground." Even if you were to overcome and stand at the top of such a wall (potentially referring to Luka’s position as a winner of Alien Stage), the situation is terrifying. And of course, falling from such a height (dying) is terrifying too. So this lyric could refer to how Luka views life as terrible either way (theres no winning) and/or that, despite his “advantageous position,” he’ll never be able to properly overcome his circumstances as a human pet.

Anyways! *kicks my feet* I translated the wall line as ambiguous to either interpretation because the ambiguity is likely the intention and I think theres value in all those takes.

ALTERNATIVE LYRICS (Line 9 and 27): “When our darkness overlaps onto each other” You have to pause on the “o” in “overlap,” which is a bit awkward. The current lyric works out well since the syllable that needs to be paused on is a single word (“starts”). This line rhythmically was probably the most difficult to tackle, haha.

ALTERNATIVE LYRICS (Line 14 and 32): “Your beauty is forever.” As someone who prefers not deviating from a translation as much as possible, to be frank, that just sounds bad, imo, lol. But if you prefer that option, go for it, I guess!

ALTERNATIVE LYRICS (Line 21 and 22): “I will lose all my sense / I will go blind and deaf” I enjoyed the first half implying that one’s losing their “mental” sense (mind), but felt that it deviated from original meaning too much.
