Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD-08) is a living national treasure of democracy.
Rep. Raskin visited with Alicia Menendez, Michael Steele, and Symone Sanders-Townsend at MSNBC's The Weekend to talk about a number of issues.
He said Trump "came back to the scene of the crime" with his first visit to Capitol Hill since 06 January 2021. Trump met with GOP members of both chambers who ignored the fact that he put their lives at risk with his coup attempt.
Of course Trump offered no apology for his endangerment of their lives or for his damage to American institutions of democracy. It says a lot about the mindset of most Republicans these days that they will suffer no humiliation too great to show their grovelling loyalty to wannabe dictator Trump.
Rep. Raskin also talked about the GOP Supreme Court's NRA-friendly approval of the use of "bump stocks" – devices that permit assault rifles to be converted into machine guns.
Republicans willingly gave up their claim to being the party of law and order so they could incessantly pander to Trump's lust for dictatorship and to empower the NRA's goal of putting machine guns in the hands of every nutjob in the country.
This election requires more personal effort than previous ones. Be willing to do more grassroots work and make our case to low-information voters you may know.

Lee Moran at HuffPost:
Authoritarianism expert Ruth Ben-Ghiat spoke on MSNBC’s “The Weekend” about one particular appeal that President-elect Donald Trump had for some voters that resulted in his decisive 2024 election victory ― and how the “illusion of competency” is “one of the biggest scams of all” of authoritarian leaders. Many people “would like to be relieved of the burden of choice” when it comes to voting in elections, and that is what Trump promised during the campaign to evangelical Christians, Ben-Ghiat noted. “They are not afraid of being relieved of that burden of choice and letting somebody else make the decisions,” she explained. “And so, in fact, often authoritarian personalities who are like the big boss at home or in the workplace, the bullies, they are the ones who are glad in the political ground to give up their agency and voice to somebody else.” Trump promised voters that “I alone can fix it,” Ben-Ghiat recalled.
Appearing on MSNBC's The Weekend this past Saturday, Ruth Ben-Ghiat highlighted that the "illusion of competency" is one of the "biggest scams of all" and that a sizable chunk of voters "would like to be relieved of the burden of choice."

Lyle Menendez & his high school girlfriend Stacey Feldman ca. 1984.
“Who was your first girlfriend?”
“Stacey Feldman.”
“What years were you and Stacey together?”
“Until I was eighteen and started between fifteen and sixteen.”
“Did you consider this a serious relationship?”
“Yes.”
“Did you talk to her about marriage?”
“Yes.”
“Did you two pick out the names for the children you were going to have?”
“Yes.”
“Did you buy Stacey presents?”
“Yes.”
“What kind of presents did you buy her?”
“Jewelry, flowers every Friday.”
“What kind of flowers would you give her?”
“Roses, every Friday.”
“What kind of jewelry did you buy her?”
“Bracelets and a few heart pendants, got her an emerald heart pendant for her birthday and lots of gifts. A whole family of stuffed animals.”
“When you say a whole family of stuffed animals, how many stuffed animals did you get her?”
“Like twenty. These white teddy bears that we called Pookies.”
“Why did you call them Pookies?”
“That was because of the Garfield cartoon, he has a teddy bear that’s called Pookie and when he gets insecure he always gets his teddy bear. So I got her that because we were apart so much because I lived with my parents.”
“Did you think that animals would be comforting to her?”
“Yes, I… you know they were soft and they had made me feel safer and when you’re feeling lost and she was, her parents were divorced and there were problems. For me it was very comforting, you know you could have your own little family there in the room with you and play. So I slowly built up a family for her.”
“Were the animals you had like family for you?”
“Yes. They were especially early on but all the way through my teenage years sometimes they got me through the day.”
“How did they get you through the day?”
“Just taking me out of where I was and to this other world of these friends. Was very, very important to me and as I got older it was embarrassing cuz really stuffed animals are for little kids but they were just important to me.”
“Is it embarrassing for you to talk about it?”
“Yes.”
“At one point did Stacey tell you she was going to break up with you?”
“Yes.”
“How old were you?”
“I was eighteen.”
“Did you buy her something then, a big present?”
“I bought her a fur coat or actually I made payments on a fur coat that I wanted to give to her.”
“What did you have to pay to get the fur coat?”
“I put down $150 dollars or something like that.”
“Did she take the coat?”
“No.”
— Lyle Menendez direct examination with his attorney Jill Lansing talking about his first girlfriend.
—————-
“Did he then find a girlfriend?”
“He found a girlfriend.”
“And is that Stacey Feldman?”
“Yes.”
“And was there something unusual about the relationship between Lyle and Stacey?”
“Yes.”
“What was that?”
“The other kids thought it uncool to hold hands or be so unguarded in the hallways to show affection towards each other but they were always holding each other, they were always together. Which again was brought up in many faculty meetings, what do we do with this?”
“Was it a problem for the school or just unusual?”
“We just viewed it as something Lyle needed and as long as it didn’t go beyond this it just was holding hands and this kind of thing that it was okay.”
“Was there something unusual about the amount of time they spent together?”
“It was obsessive. Really that’s all they had, they had each other.”
“And the school decided to not interfere?”
“To sort of turn their head a little bit and not report as we would with any other kid.”
— Alicia Hercz, (teacher & friend of Jose and Kitty Menendez) describing Lyle’s first relationship.
—————
“Did you know Lyle to have a particular person he was close to at school?”
“Yes.”
“Who was that?”
“He had a girlfriend that he was very attached to.”
“Was that Stacey Feldman?”
“Yes it was.”
“Was there something unusual about their relationship compared to other kids?”
“It was just a very soft and caring relationship that I could see. They always held hands and at school sometimes there are students that you have to break up that they get too close but I never witnessed this with Lyle and Stacey. I saw them holding hands across the table, they’d be sitting you know with all four hands clutched together looking intently into each other’s eyes.”
“Did they appear to be very close?”
“Yes they did.”
“Were they always together?”
“I almost always saw them together, unless Lyle was on his way home.”
— Charlene Elmore (school nurse) describing her observations of Lyle & Stacey

Several gold bars discovered by federal agents in Democratic New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez's residence as part of a high-profile bribery investigation can be traced to a violent robbery a decade ago.
According to a sprawling indictment unsealed by federal prosecutors in September, Menendez and his wife allegedly played a role in a years-long bribery scheme that involved the Egyptian government and local businessmen including Fred Daibes, a wealthy New Jersey real estate developer. Prosecutors revealed they retrieved multiple gold bars from Menendez's home which were allegedly used as payment in the scheme.
At least four of the gold bars discovered by investigators can be linked to Daibes, both because of their unique engraved serial numbers and thanks to court documents related to a 2013 robbery which Daibes was a victim of, an NBC New York investigation revealed Monday. In November 2013, four assailants beat and robbed Daibes at gunpoint in his Edgewater, New Jersey, apartment, stealing 22 gold bars, jewelry and cash.
"Each gold bar has its own serial number," Daibes told local investigators in a 2014 transcript obtained by NBC New York. "They’re all stamped … you’ll never see two stamped the same way."
5 EXPLOSIVE REVELATIONS FROM DEM SEN BOB MENENDEZ'S BOMBSHELL FEDERAL INDICTMENT
Photographs released by the Department of Justice in September showing the gold bars discovered at Menendez's home, for example, reveal one of the bars has a serial number of "590005." Daibes reported a gold bar with that same serial number stolen during the 2013 heist, NBC New York reported.
And the federal indictment notes that the serial numbers on the gold bars indicate they had previously been possessed by Daibes.
MSNBC'S ALICIA MENENDEZ ADDRESSES FATHER'S INDICTMENT: COLLEAGUES HAVE 'AGGRESSIVELY' COVERED
"A court-authorized search of the residence of Robert Menendez and Nadine Menendez, a/k/a ‘Nadine Arslanian,’ the defendants, revealed, among other things, approximately two one-kilogram gold bars and nine one-ounce gold bars that had serial numbers indicating they had previously been possessed by Fred Daibes, the defendant," the indictment states.
In addition, when Daibes reported the robbery to police in 2013, he said 22 gold bars had been taken. Similarly, the September indictment states that Daibes sold 22 gold bars to Wael Hana, another defendant allegedly implicated in the bribery scheme.
Police ultimately arrested and charged four individuals for robbing Daibes in 2013, according to local media reports. Then, in September 2015, the suspects all pled guilty and were ultimately sentenced to several months in prison.
Meanwhile, since the federal bribery indictment was unsealed earlier this year, Menendez has repeatedly asserted his innocence and remained in the Senate.
"The allegations leveled against me are just that, allegations," Menendez said Sept. 25. "For anyone who has known me throughout my 50 years of public service, they know I have always fought for what is right. My advocacy has always been grounded. And what I learned from growing up as the son of Cuban refugees, especially my mom, my hero, Evangelina Menendez. Everything I accomplished, I worked for despite the nay sayers and everyone who has underestimated me.
"I firmly believe that when all the facts are presented, not only will I be exonerated, but I still will be New Jersey’s senior senator," he added. "The court of public opinion is no substitute for our revered justice system. We cannot set aside the presumption of innocence for political expediency when the harm is irrevocable."
