Stories that prove repeatedly that the power of friendship and the power of incredible violence don’t have to be mutually exclusive on the way to solving problems are my favourite kind of jam.

Re the previous magicians post about everyone having their own story that the other characters are butting into, in the alternate universe s1 magicians where Alice is the protagonist sneaking into magic school to discover the truth of her brother's mysterious death, Quentin is her drip boyfriend who cheats on her and we are all cheering for Alice/Penny/Kady endgame.

"...Walsingham, the monastic author of the St. Albans Chronicle, was by far [Alice Perrers'] harshest contemporary critic, who in his venom has (somewhat ironically) left us with the longest and most detailed account of her background and personality, her influence as Edward’s mistress, and her subsequent trial. He describes Alice as a shameless lowborn meretrix (a word variously translated as mistress, whore, or harlot), who “brought almost universal dishonour upon the king’s reputation […] and defiled virtually the whole kingdom of England with her disgraceful insolence.” Although Walsingham was not always accurate and, specifically in this case, clearly heavily biased against Alice, he nevertheless provides a truly contemporary account, and his importance as a source should not be underestimated. Likewise, the anonymous monk of St. Mary’s York recorded that in the Good Parliament the Commons (represented by their speaker, Sir Peter de la Mare) stated that it “would be of great gain to the kingdom to remove the said dame [Alice] from the presence of the king both as a matter of conscious and of the ill prosecution of the war.” During the same assembly, the bishop of Rochester, Thomas Brinton, preached from St. Paul’s Cross that “it is not fitting nor safe for all the keys of the kingdom to hang from the belt of one wife.” Although the word wife (uxoris) is used, it is widely accepted that this is a reference to Alice.”
-Laura Tompkins, '"Edward III's Gold-Digging Mistress": Alice Perrers, Gender, and Financial Power at the English Royal Court, 1360-1377", "Women and Economic Power in Premodern Courts" (edited by Cathleen Sarti). Italics by me.
#alice perrers#historicwomendaily#my post#edward iii#@ anon who asked me how much faith should we put in Walsingham's account of Alice#Walsingham is undoubtedly vicious and prejudiced (and thus not always accurate - perhaps deliberately so) where Alice is concerned#But he is also a direct contemporary eyewitness and is thus invaluable as a source. His importance can never be emphasized enough.#More importantly however - the image of Alice as a transgressive woman with improper influence who 'hijacked' the kingdom#is not merely painted by Walsingham or limited to his account#It's how these other sources - the monk at St. Mary's and the Bishop of Rochester - depicted her as well#('it is not fitting nor safe for all the keys of the kingdom to hang from the belt of one wife' is pretty telling in more ways than one)#as did contemporary literature of the time like Chaucer's 'Wife of Bath' and William Langland's Lady Meed in 'Piers Plowman'#the whole point of the Good Parliament & the Parliament after Edward III's death was to simultaneously restrict her influence & punish her#So...I'd say Walsingham's image of Alice (unfortunately) tracks with how she was widely perceived at the time#Of course that doesn't mean that this image shouldn't be reassessed and recontextualized#Misogyny and classism very demonstrably played a huge role in how Alice was regarded by contemporaries#Ormrod has also pointed out that no matter the extent of Alice's influence she would ultimately always be limited by the practical#reality of being a woman and a commoner#'Her sex and status simply did not allow her the regular and acknowledged access to power enjoyed by politically ambitious male favourites'#It is not impossible that she was 'a symbol rather than a cause' of the crisis in Edward III's late reign#And of course it's true that WERE people who defended her publicly and privately even after Edward's death as Walsingham himself admits#She can't have been as universally detested as most people think#(we should also consider Walsingham's deriding comment about her 'seductiveness' ie: she was probably very witty and charismatic)#But ofc none of this change the fact that Walsingham's image of Alice's 'impropriety' transgressiveness was a widespread one#Nor does it change the fact that this image was fundamentally rooted in the very real and impressive power she had#Alice WAS proactive and acquisitive and wildly influential (Edward III listened to her over several of his own children ffs)#She DID have more power and visibility than any other royal mistress in medieval England#She DOES seem to have acted in ways that would have been perceived as 'inverting queenship'#*That's okay*. Alice's actions & image should absolutely be recontextualized and given more sympathy than they are#but I have absolutely no intention of diminishing or downplaying them either. That's why I love her so much.

if i did a reread of the walking dead and wrote an essay on how aegon ii and carl are doomed to be the last man standing by their narratives, and what starts out as a sort of cool & nifty super power of always surviving turns into this horrific curse where everyone they know is dying around them & sometimes it’s their fault & sometimes it’s not but either way they can’t ever stop it until they’re sitting at the ending with nothing but their lone daughter to protect but so broken they can no longer connect to her and then their story abruptly ends-
would that be like the Most stupid, nerdy thing i have ever done in my life or
#valyrianscrolls#aegon the usurper#carl grimes#i associate the phrase ‘last man standing’ so heavily with carl that i used it to describe aegon and my brain short circuited#also…something something ‘if we forgive our fathers what else is left’ and ‘you can never escape your mothers blood’#re: carl’s life going so badly bc of his father’s vicious & world destroying love. and viserys destroying aegon’s life bc of his own lack of#love for aegon. completely accident. neither viserys or rick set out to create a worse world and yet.#and lori and alicent standing like ghosts over their babies. what do you do when your mother’s misery in her marriage is the reason your#life went off the rails. how do you hate her for it yet how do you love her.#rick ultimately dying at the hands of one of his victims. viserys rotting to deal surrounding by the children he emotionally abandoned.#THERES SOMETHING HERE#ROBERT KIRKMAN I KNOW YOU WERE AT CONS WITH GEORGE DID U EVER HANG OUT A BIT. YOU BOTH LOVE DOOMED BY THE NARRATIVE STORIES#AND HATE HOW PUSHY YOUR FANBASE IS AJSJDJ#getting on my soap box#this is comics carl obviously show carl is also my child and last man standing it’s just that they didn’t want to pay chandler riggs money#and killed him off. in my mind show carl outlives rick & michonne & judith & rj. just carl & maggie on opposite sides of the coast#alone with their grief and refusing to speak bc they no longer have the words.#carl’s daughter asks why her name is mj and carl’s grief chokes the words

This is my last post in my series of rainbow recs. If you've enjoyed my content and can donate, my ko-fi is linked in my bio and my stories.
Thank you to everyone who has read my posts, saved them, shared them, and commented. It really means a lot that so many people have said they resonate with what I’ve said. It hasn’t been easy sharing some of this stuff as it’s not something I always like talking about. But with the #JesusJune reading challenge that was created by Christian bigots, I felt it was an opportune time to let my fellow religiously traumatized queers know that you’re not alone.
It’s been a hard journey to get to where I am today, and I don’t think I could have done that if it weren’t for my partner and queer representation in books. Before joining booksta back in 2017, I can think of only two queer books I’d really read, M or F? by Lisa Papademetriou and Chris Tebbetts and Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green and David Levithan. I read them both in high school and then fell off the reading wagon because college was a lot and I was too busy surviving to leisurely read. But it was the first time that I had read books with explicitly queer characters.
I am so very thankful that queer books exist at the capacity they do now. Even though scared adults are trying to ban queer content, it’s there for kids that need it and I greatly hope the ones that do need it are able to get it. If I had books like Loveless by Alice Oseman or known of any out and proud asexual authors, I might have discovered my asexuality sooner. That being said, I’m so glad that kids these days have better access to information that I did growing up (despite what some people want) and seem to know who they are at an earlier age. I think they’ll turn out okay, all things considered.
Remember: whether you are out or not, know you are greatly loved and my account is a safe space. 🌈 Bigots can't and won't win.

all of the comments on chapter 15 were making me curious about something. we all hate otto rn, and there's obviously a huge list of characters who have a bone to pick with him for one reason or another. let's say you can choose any character to get like a solid 15-20 minutes alone with him in a room. which character would you most want to see beat him up?

Idk why my brain went Hatiçe is a happily married version of show!Alicent.
Like both women who just wanted to be happy, who lost children and who's husband kinda ruined their lives before and after their death. That angelic motherly perfect princess facade and pretty crying face, the descent into madness from grief, the trauma, the marriages they didn't want, the children who died and at least one who they subconsciously believe/know who's death they caused. The father who used them to secure power, the people around them enabling their bad decisions and friends turning into enemies because of their husband, their sheltered upbringing that made them pawns in a bigger game and also overestimating their own ability which leads to their doom.

I can’t get enough of your writing
Hibari and her aren’t friends but they are friendly. He fights her in the mornings and she feels well enough to do better in the morning. They fight at lunch and she passes her afternoon classes. She sneaks out at night to hunt down gangbangers with him and she can breathe.
But it gets better when she meets a white haired girl who is screaming in her own skin.
In another life when they’re both boys or when she is, Sasagawa Ryouka is a loud and Hercules boxer. Strong and manly.
In a world where she is a woman, Ryouka is bond by her parents nagging. ‘To loud.’ ‘To violent.’ ‘To masculine.’ ‘You’re a woman Ryouka act like it.’
‘Act like your sister.’ ‘Stop.’ ‘Stop.’ ‘Stop-‘
Ryouka did stop. She stopped when a girl with eyes that seemed dead launched herself at Hibari with a laugh, eyes coming alive. She stopped when the girl spotted her and offered to fight her.
She stopped caring about her parents and joined in on the fight. It was thrilling.
Tsuna simply loved to have a partner. A fighter alongside her who thrived in fighting, who felt alive. When her partners little sister scolded her for letting Ryouka fight-
“At least I’m not forcing her to be something she’s not.” Tsuna told Kyōko after the girl had confronted her in class. “You and your parents kept telling her to stop, to pretend she didn’t like to fight, to ignore her wishes. You were terrible people to her, selfish in your own wants and desires for what Ryouka wanted.” Tsuna hated her teeth as Kyōko stepped back at the glare she was being given. “You’re no idol. You’re a self little brat who somehow has everyone fooled.” The door opened and Ryouka stepped in.
“Kyōko.” She gave a nod to her sister before turning to Tsuna. “Imouto! C’mon! Hibari is waiting for our EXTREME spar!” Kyōko flinched.
Tsuna smiled.
