This is a bracket to determine which of the many memorable NPCs from across the Professor Layton games are the greatest.

GAMES INCLUDED: Every game except LBMR. Eternal Diva characters are also not included here.

WHAT COUNTS AS AN NPC?: Anyone who doesn't have a puzzle animation. Characters excluded are Layton, Luke, Flora, Clive, Emmy, Randall, Aurora, Des, Espella, Phoenix, Maya, Katrielle, Ernest, Sherl, Hastings, and Emiliana.

WILL THERE BE NOMINATIONS?: Nope! Every NPC will be included.

WHAT ABOUT THE LAYTONMOBILE/MOLENTARY EXPRESS?: No vehicles. Not characters.

WHY IS NAIYA YOUR ICON?: In my opinion, she's one of the more underrated NPCs of the series. I'll probably cycle through some of the ones I have available to me right now.

ARE ALTER EGOS SEPERATE CHARACTERS?: No. For instance, Ratman is not included because his secret identity is in the tournament.

US OR UK NAMES?: I will try to make available as many names for the NPCs as possible! Which includes their Japanese names and as many names in the localizations as I am able to obtain from the wiki and my own sources. I'll probably reliably have the English (both versions where applicable), Japanese, and French names for every character when I do the bracket rounds. The list below however is entirely in English.

Despite the warmth of the small house, you were shuddering and shivering all over. You pulled the blanket tighter around Rudy’s tiny little form, a little squeak emanating from him before you returned the pacifier to his mouth. 

Bob quickly entered through the front door with Patrick and Auggie clinging to the hem of his black Carhardt and his tan cowboy hat already covered in snow. Hawk poked his head around the corner from the kitchen as the cold blast of air hung for a moment before the boys hurriedly stripped off their jackets and boots, sticking them by the door. 

“Oh my God!” Bob exclaimed, shivering. “I forgot how friggin cold winters here are.” 

“Too much to handle Robert?” Hawk laughed. 

“DADDY’S NIPPLES ARE HARD!!” Auggie shouted. 

Bob turned bright red with embarrassment as you laughed under your breath. It was becoming more apparent than ever, that August was slowly turning into his godfather, the only differences being that he was the spitting image of Bob and his little glasses. 

“Highly inappropriate good sir,” Bob reminded him, practically unwinding the knit scarf from Auggie’s neck before he and Patrick ran off to find Alfie and Timmy. “And keep your voices down, your sister’s asleep.” 

“Let’em run a bit,” Hawk said with a wave of his hand. “We’ll send’em down to the basement later and maybe have them watch a movie.” 

Bob made his way over to you as Hawk set the two steaming mugs on the creaky coffee table. “You can put him in the cradle swing if you want.” 

“Are you sure?” you asked him. 

“Go right ahead,” Hawk answered. “The thing’s been in the family for close to a hundred years and it’s still got its mojo.” 

Tiredly you rose from the couch before Hawk offered to take Rudy from you, blanket and all, his deeply lined and wrinkled hands gently placing the newborn into the cradle basket that had been woven from hemp rope. “No matter how many times it happens,” Hawk chuckled. “I still can’t wrap my head around the fact that I’m a grandpa.” 

Bob’s smile grew broader as you scooted closer to him on the couch, the two of you snuggling close together under the warm blanket that Hawk’s wife had made some thirty years ago. “Thank you for letting us stay, Hawk,” you told him. “I know it was last minute but....” 

“No worries (y/n),” Hawk answered. “You and the rest of the family are welcome here any time. I just wish the wife was back from her trip but oh well.” 

“Same,” Bob replied, rubbing his tired eyes. “Mom and Dad said they’re coming back from New Mexico soon.” 

“Ah it’ll be good to see’em again,” Hawk sighed. “I miss your dad’s smartass remarks about that stingy preacher and his raisin faced wife.” 

You and Bob snorted as the laughter broke out. 

“I mean I always knew that the man picked low hanging fruit but Frida looks more like a road apple,” Hawk remarked. 

You, Bob and Hawk had a good laugh on the matter until the sound of tiny footsteps emerging from the bedroom caught you all off guard. Deidre and Marcy both emerged from one of the bedrooms with the big husky dog behind them. Deidre’s bedhead made her hair curlier than ever while Marcy’s little glasses were a little lopsided on her nose. 

“Uh-oh, someone’s awake,” you said in a pleasant sing-song voice.

Deidre ran right to you and Bob while Marcy climbed into her grandfather’s lap. Though there was no sign of the other four miscreants, you and Bob reveled in the feeling of closeness with Hawk and the kids, enjoying every last minute of it and feeling more whole and complete than you ever had.

Ok so this is a fic from years ago that I’ve decided to sort of change up and develop, imagine Tommy Shelby had a daughter before he went to war, she’s around 12 now.

Molly woke up to a dark room, she sat up on the sofa and rubbed her eyes, the room was hazy, she heard whispering and whimpering, she walked to the door a peered through the crack, two men both in balaclavas, holding Polly and her father at gunpoint, she gasped and stumbled backwards, suddenly someone grabbed her, covering her mouth to muffle her screaming, they dragged her out into the room where Polly and her father were, the figure dragged her out the door as she clawed and screamed, one of the masked men held a gun to Tommys head, Molly was dragged out of sight as a gunshot was heard, she screamed and cried out

“Molly, Molly!” She woke up gasping for breath, her eyes wild and terrified, Polly was crouched in front of her holding her face, “it was a dream love it’s not real” she said, Molly looked around, “the….they…they shot him, he’s dead I need to find-“ she said trying to stand up, Polly stopped her, “look at me Molly” she said, Molly looked at her, her eyes filling with tears, “you were dreaming, your fathers in his office, your uncles are down in the shop and I’m right in front of you” she said calmly, Molly got up and moved past Polly, she pushed the door to the shop open and searched the room, she saw her dad talking to Alfie, she went to go to him but Polly stopped her, “not when he’s discussing business” she said, Molly nodded and waited back, watching like a hawk, John noticed first and walked straight over, taking in Mollys pale and tear stained face, he leaned down to look at her, “you alright?” He asked looking between her and Polly, “nightmares” Polly said, Molly looked at the floor, John ruffled her hair gently, “you want me to go and get Tom?” He asked, Molly nodded.

John approached Tommy and Alfie, “Tom” he put his hand on his older brothers shoulder, “Molly needs you, she’s not right Tom, her eyes, they’re like Danny’s after an episode” Tommy looked towards Molly and nodded her over, she quickly pushed through the shop and to his office, Tommy guided her into the office followed by John and Alfie. “Molly, this is my business associate Alfie Solomon’s, Alfie this my daughter Molly” Tommy said, Molly nervously glanced between her dad and Alfie, she looked to John who just nodded. Alfie sat down in a chair, his gaze never leaving Molly, “anyone ever told you that you look very much like your dear old dad” Alfie said, Molly nodded, “I’ve heard it before” she replied, “now your old man tells me you’ve had a troubling couple of days” Alfie continued, Molly nodded again. “Nasty business” he said, Molly looked at him, “why are you here? What do you want?” Molly asked, her voice laced with anger, “Molly” Tommy said in a warning tone but Alfie held didn’t look phased, “you know I’ve seen that look before, yeah many times, you see when the soldiers came back from war some of them yeah? Their bodies were back in Camden but their minds, their minds were still in the trenches, now you, your body is stood in this very room with us but your mind is still in that house” Alfie said, Molly clenched her jaw, swallowing the lump in her throat and the burning in her eyes. She looked up at the ceiling to stop tears from falling, she looked to her dad “can I go back in the house?” She asked, her voice barely above a whisper, Tommy looked disappointed but nodded, Molly left the office quickly and over to Polly.

“She’s definitely a Shelby” Alfie said standing up, Tommy shook his hand and saw him out, the second he was out of sight Tommy went to find Molly, he walked into the kitchen and saw Polly and Ada, Polly nodded her head towards the bedroom, Tommy pushed the door open and saw Molly sat on the bed with her legs crossed, he approached and sat down next to her.

“You’ve never let me meet your business associates before” Molly said picking at her nails, Tommy pulled out a cigarette and lit it, “Alfie is one of my most trusted associates, I thought it might help to introduce the two of you, so if myself or your uncles aren’t around that you know someone, if something happens there’s someone you know” Tommy said, Molly nodded, “he seems nice, don’t love the mind reading stuff though” Molly said, giving a small laugh and wiping her tears away, Tommy chuckled, “he’s a very smart man” Tommy said, they both sat in a comfortable silence for a while.

“The house is ready for us to go back” Tommy said, putting out his cigarette. Molly looked at him, “I’ve missed the bookcase in your office” she said, Tommy laughed, “we’ll leave after dinner” he said and kissed the top of her head.

Deadly Game, the debut novel from Michael Caine, will be published in the UK and US in November, it has been announced.

The actor, 90, has long harboured the desire to write a thriller, and was inspired to do so by a news item, says his UK publisher, Hodder’s Rowena Webb, about “the discovery of uranium by workers on a dump in London’s East End”. The novel’s lead character is DCI Harry Taylor, who, according to the synopsis, is “called in when just such a package is found, mysteriously abandoned in Stepney and stolen before the police can reclaim it. As security agencies around the world go to red alert, it is former SAS man Harry and his small team from the Met who must race against time to find who has the nuclear material and what they plan to do with it.”

Key suspects in the case include “the aristocratic English art dealer Julian Smythe” and “mega-rich Russian Vladimir Voldrev”. The plot also involves “British neo-Nazis and Colombian drug cartels”, leaving Harry “just the man to cut through the red tape and get to the heart of an extraordinary criminal enterprise”.

Says Hodder fiction editor Nick Sayers: “When Rowena and I met Sir Michael last year, I discovered that he is not only a lifelong reader of thrillers, but also an author bursting with ideas for fiction of his own. Deadly Game is a cracking thriller with a real voice and a super twist.”

Caine discussed the novel, which he wrote during lockdown, in an interview with the Guardian in 2021, when the title was still If You Don’t Want to Die.

“I only read thrillers,” he told Xan Brooks. “I’m an adventure man, I’m not a literature person, so I’m not trying to replace Shakespeare here. But it’s based on something I once read about two dustmen, two rubbish collectors in the East End. And they find uranium in the rubbish.”

One of the best known and most beloved British film stars of the past 60 years, Caine has appeared in more than 130 films, including Zulu, Alfie, The Italian Job and Sleuth.

He won supporting actor Oscars for his performances in Hannah and Her Sisters and The Cider House Rules, and more recently has collaborated with the director Christopher Nolan.

Caine himself hails from south-east London, and has six times played a character called Harry, most notably in The Ipcress File and its sequels, and in 2009’s Harry Brown.

He will next be soon alongside Glenda Jackson in The Great Escaper, based on the real-life story of a second world war veteran who fled his care home to attend the D-Day anniversary in Normandy in 2014.

Lucian Freud – The {Surprisingly} Interesting Life Of A British Painter.

In 1940, he had two pet hawks that would sit om his shoulder and stare at anybody that would approach him, Freud liked animals, he liked the dead and living ones, always studied at London zoos and Taxidermy shops.

When Freud decided to get into portraits, his work was demanded excessively. Every portrait would need at least a few hours. David Hockney, who was the subject of one of his portraits, claimed that he sat for hundreds of hours for Freud.

He was a absent father! With fifteen children, only some tried to bond with him in his later years. As a gambler, and would sometimes pay off his bookie, Alfie McLean, with paintings. When McLean died, he had a collection of around 23 works that had a valuation in the realm of £100 million. He should’ve been Amish, maybe then he can have a good explanation for all those…offsprings.

His portraits of his children, done as nudes like most of his other portraits, have garnered the most controversy; while some consider them exploitative, others have attributed this to the prudish culture of Britain at the time. {BEWARE IF YOU EVER LOOK THEM UP! Curious Creep.}

Freud was known for his near obsession with detail {besides when it comes to the backgrounds, I guess.}, and simultaneously his ability to render nearly anyone in his portraits in an unflattering way—perhaps best exemplified by his full length, nude portrait of Kate Moss.

In 2000, Freud gifted his studio assistant David Dawson a whippet. The small dog would go on to feature prominently within the artist’s oeuvre.

Only once did Freud complete a portrait of someone he did not like: the book dealer Bernard Breslauer. He made the portrait overly grotesque, and Breslauer had it destroyed. – {More in the “Famous Artist Beefs!”}
