Interview with Modemagasinet IN (March 2020)

How do we react when faced with something that scares us? If we are Danes, we suppress and displace, because there is no need to spoil the hygge we are so famous for. But we must dare to talk about it, says Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. And that is why he has said yes to co-star in the film about the attack on Krudttønden and the Copenhagen Great Synagogue in 2015. Because art can help us to talk about the difficult things we otherwise cannot find words for. The same can be said about community, so we Danes must also be better at looking after each other in everyday life – the same way we do when our national football team is successful.

Hvordan reagerer vi, når vi står over for noget, der gør os bange? Hvis vi er danskere, har vi det med at fortie og fortrænge, for der skulle nødig være noget, der spolerede den hygge, vi er så berømte for. Men vi skal turde tale om det, siger Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. Og det er bl.a. derfor, han har sagt ja til at medvirke i filmen om attentatet på Krudttønden og Københavns Synagoge i 2015. For kunst kan hjælpe os med at tale om de svære ting, vi ellers ikke kan finde ord for. Det samme kan fællesskab, så vi danskere skal også være bedre til at søge hinanden i hverdagen - på samme måde, som vi gør, når vores fodboldlandshold har succes.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau

Født 27. juli 1970, opvokset i Tyberg på Sydsjælland.

Uddannet fra Statens Teaterskole i 1993 – året efter fik han sit store gennembrud i ‘Nattevagten’.

Siden har han medvirket i bl.a. ‘Black Hawk Down’, ‘Manden bag døren’, ‘Den gode strømer’, ‘Supervoksen’, Oblivion’, ‘En chance til’ og ‘Selvmordsturisten’.

Han spillede rollen som Jaime Lannister i HBO-succesen ‘Game of Thrones’ fra 2011 til 2019. Serien vandt hele 59 Emmystatuetter i løbet af de otte sæsoner.

Fra 5. marts kan han opleves som politimanden Rico i ‘Krudttønden’.

Senere på året dukker han op i den amerikanske thriller ‘The Silencing’, og næste år spiller han over for Katrine Greis-Rosenthal i ‘Smagen af sult’.

Han har været gift med Nukâka Coster-Waldau og er far til to piger, Safina og Filippa.

Han er goodwill-ambassador for FN med fokus på bæredygtige udviklingsmål og rettigheder for piger og kvinder.

Ansigtet er forpint. Øjnene små sprækker. Stemmen ryster let. 'Alting forandrer sig. Hver eneste dag', nærmest muser han. Det er slet ikke det, han skal sige.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau kommer blæsende ind ad døren. Hans tykke, gyldne hår stritter, og han har ingen jakke på, fur han ‘kom lidt hurtigt ud ad døren’. Han griner og giver opmærksomt hånd rækken rundt - han er klar. Hans ligefremme facon virker næsten kontradiktorisk, når man lige har set ham i ‘Krudttønden’ - Ole Christian Madsens film om attentatet på Østerbro-spillestedet og synagogen i København for fem år siden.

Her spiller han politimanden Rico. Den eneste af filmens fire hovedfigurer, der ikke er hentet i virkeligheden. Rico er manden, som jagter Omar el-Hussein efterdrabene på Finn Nørgaard og Dan Uzan. Den eneste af de fire, som overlever, og dermed den, der fortæller historien. Men den afrapportering, han bliver bedt om at levere af sin chef, bliver lige sl meget en tankestrøm om liv, død og (u)menneske(lig)hed, som hvisler ud mellem de sammenbidte tænder. Filmen har allerede inden premieren skabt debat: Er det fur tidligt at lave en film om attentatet på København? Er det for barsk aver for ofrenes pårørende og dem, der var vidner til drabene? Kan man overhovedet lave en film om noget, som vi ikke kender de fulde konsekvenser af endnu?

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau har hørt argumenterne. Og ‘alle har ret til deres holdning’, synes han.

– Men film og kunst generelt kan tage fat i det, der er voldsomt i vores verden, og hjælpe os med at bearbejde det, siger han og fortsætter:

– Jeg kan jo kun sige, hvad jeg selv følte og tænkte, da jeg læste manuskriptet: Jeg havde ikke glemt attentatet, men jeg havde nok fortrængt det lidt, og sådan tror jeg, mange har det. For det stemmer ikke overens med den måde, vi ser Danmark på. Vi kan ikke acceptere, at det er den nye normal.

Men det er vigtigt, at vi taler om det, der foregår, siger han. Og film kan hjælpe os med at skabe et sprog for det.

– Der er ingen, der bryder sig om at bryde den gode stemning - det er nærmest blevet vores ‘trademark’ her i Danmark. Hyggen, ikke? Men det er vigtigt, at vi får svesken på disken. Og lige præcis når det handler om at gi ud og skyde pi andre mennesker, skal vi stå fast og sige ‘dét accepterer vi ikke’, siger skuespilleren.

Han understreger, at ‘det voldsomme’ jo ikke går væk af, at vi ikke taler om det. Det er en del af verden og hverdagen. Han - som nok har rejst mere end de fleste de seneste år – henviser til den øgede sikkerhed i lufthavne verden over og ‘de kæmpe sten’, som nu ligger som sikkerhedsværn på Christiansborg Slotsplads. Men også til de krige, Danmark har deltaget i, og de danske soldater, ‘der stadig er derude’.

Fire mænd ved en skillevej

‘Krudttønden’ forsøger ikke at forklare, hvorfor det, som skete, skete. Eller om det kunne have været afværget. Den fortæller den historie, vi kender fra medierne, om en mand, som tager to liv og ender med selv at blive skudt. Men den fortæller også historien om fire mænd - Omar, Finn, Dan og Rico - som alle har noget, de kæmper med, da deres skæbner forbindes.

– Jeg kunne godt lide strukturen, og jeg tror, de fleste kan identificere sig med det her med at stå ved en skillevej og skulle vælge, hvor man går hen, siger Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.

– Rico har været en succes, men nu er han kommet til et punkt, hvor han skal prøve at acceptere, at der skal ske nogle forandringer, forklarer han videre - uden at det her skal røbes, hvad det er for nogle ting. hans fiktive alter ego bokser med.

– Han er pissebange. Og det kan jeg godt forstå. Men toget kører altså, og så skal du vælge, om du vil blive stående på perronen, eller du vil hoppe på. siger Nikolaj Coster-Waldau og tilføjer, at ‘forandring fryder - er det ikke det, man siger?’

I de scener, hvor Rico aflægger rapport efter attentaterne og indimellem kommer på mentale afveje, taler han om menneskelighed og det vigtige i at holde fast i den, når verden virker skræmmende, usikker og ond. Og Nikolaj Coster-Waldau er enig i, at kærligheden og fællesskabet er de bedste våben mod frygten.

– Det er en del af det at være dansk, at være reserveret. Det er jeg også selv. Men vi er nødt til at skubbe til os selv indimellem. Vi elsker jo også sammenholdet. Når der er store fudboldbegivenheder, springer vi hinanden om halsen og fester i gaderne, siger han og griner, da han erkender, at der ‘kan være lidt langt mellem snapsene’, når det gælder fodboldlandsholdets succeser.

– Men de fleste vil gerne være med. Det kunne vi også se, da Kim Larsen døde, og der var fakkeloptog gennem byen - han har jo også om nogen prædiket kærlighed og sammenhold, siger han om den folkekære sanger.

Åbne døre i USA

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau bragede igennen med ‘Nattenvagten’ for 26 år siden. Siden fik Hollywood øjnene op for danskeren og gav ham hovedrollen i serien ‘New Amsterdam’ og siden jobbet som den krigeriske Jaime Lannister i ‘Game of Thrones’ der har givet ham stjernestatus verden over. Sidste år sagde han endegyldigt farvel til den brynjeklædte ridder og otte års monstersucces og har siden lavet thrilleren ‘Domino’, dramaet ‘Selvmordsturisten’ og nu ‘Krudttønden’.

Han smiler skævt, da jeg nævner, at det ikke ligefrem er feelgood-film, og spørger, om han har haft behov for at lægge afstand til ‘Game of Thrones’ ved at lave en række alvorstunge film.

– Altså ... ‘Game of Thrones’ var jo et udstyrsstykke, og jeg har i hvert fald ikke haft travlt med at lave mere af den slags, lyder svaret, før han selv tænker videre og siger:

– Jeg bar ladet lysten drive værket.

De senere år har han lavet flere film i USA og spillet over for internationale stjerner som Tom Cruise, Jessica Chastain og Juliette Binoche. Det vil han rigtig gerne blive ved med, og nu hvor ‘Game of Thrones’ ikke længere lægger beslag på kalenderen, åbner der sig nogle muligheder.

– Det føles, som om der er et ‘moment’ i USA lige nu. Jeg får nogle møder. Og det er enormt sjovt, siger han.

Samtidig er han bevidst om, at han er ‘midt i livet, måske lidt mere endda’ og at de ting, han gerne vil, skal han rykke på nu. Det er derfor, han har lavet et produktionsselskab sammen med en ven. De er i gang med at producere en dokumentarfilm, og til efteråret skal de lave en spillefilm.

– Jeg er stor fan af dokumentarfilm, som jo også har oplevet en stor opblomstring de senere år. Det er en kliche, men det handler om, at virkeligheden ofte overgår fantasien, forklarer Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, der mener, at dokumentarfilm også kan være med til at belyse verden - både de dele af den, vi ikke kender, og dem, vi kan spejle os i.

– Jeg oplever, at verden føles fragmenteret, men også at mennesker har en enorm lyst til at være fysisk sammen. Der er en ny bevidsthed i forhold til at engagere sig politisk - det har jeg også set på tætteste hold i USA, siger han og nævner bl.a. antivåben-bevægelsen March for Our Lives, som opstod i kølvandet på endnu et skoleskyderi, denne gang på Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School i Florida i februar 2018.

Her gjorde særligt gymnasieeleven Emma Gonzáles sig bemærket, da hun gik på talerstolen og talte med både styrke og følsomhed om attentatet på sin skole.

– De her unge mennesker er meget inspirerende, siger Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, som selv er far til to store teenagepiger.

Han forsætter:

– Det er ligesom Greta Thunberg - det er jo også fuldstændig fantastisk sindssygt, hvad hun har skabt! Hun har formået at få klimaforandringerne sat højest på dagsordenen - det er utroligt, som hun kan formulere sig, selv på de største scener. Hun er så konsekvent i sine holdninger. Hun sagde, hun ville strejke hver fredag, og alle sagde naja, det går nok over: men det er ikke gået over endnu!

1) Rhiannon Cousland x Loghain Mac Tir ~ OTP: Alpha and Omega The Mother Ship, the one that’s still going strong eleven years later. Mind you, when Rhia was my Nerevarine in TES Morrowind she was married to Wulfren from Emma’s exquisite White Wolf Of Lokken Mountain quest mod. There even was an earlier Alistair like bf, namely Julan, another fantastic companion mod. These two have made me happy for years and they still do.

2) Katja Shepard x Thane Krios ~ OTP: Across The Stars Jesus Christ, these two have given me feels no other pairing has. The tears, the smiles, the amazing depth of Thane as a character....I’m still blown away by them. He loved her so much, he knew and understood her like no one else before or since. And if we get that Remaster, I hope they fix the missing Thane content, I mean even Patrick Weekes stated that they dropped the ball here.

3) Desideria Hawke x Anders ~ OTP: Without you life is a desert Okay, you may wonder why such a fractured pairing is all the way up there but I love exploring layered, difficult relationships, even those that don’t end in a Happily Ever After. There is just so much to work with here and I need to write them more.

Note: Sign-ups will not close, so you are welcome to jump in at any time so long as your fanwork is posted by the deadline.

You can drop out at any time, just please make sure to let the mod know.

2. You cannot claim a movie that has been used in a previous year for the same type of fanwork OR pairing, but you can claim it for a different type of fanwork or pairing. Example: if a fic has been written for 50 First Dates, the movie cannot be claimed again for fic purposes, but can be claim for fanart/fanvid/etc. If the 50 First Dates fic was for 1988, it can be claimed for another pairing.

Scroll to the end of this page to see the list of previously claimed movies. 3. Minimum word count: 1,000 words (no maximum) / Minimum fanart: 1 (no maximum) 4. This is not an exchange fest, nor is it an anonymous one. You are allowed to talk about and discuss your fanwork throughout the duration of the fest. 5. Post your fanwork to the collection by the deadline.

Which pairings are allowed?

Since this is a Hawks fest, pairings must include at least one Hawks player, past or present in the endgame pairing. Side pairings or past pairings are allowed. OT3 and threesomes are allowed.

Which movies are allowed? All of them except for the ones listed below (see rules). Any genre. You don’t have to choose a romcom/romantic movie even if you are writing a romance. Rambo, The Karate Kid, The Revenant are perfectly valid choices so long as you can make your fanwork focus on on your Hawks pairing of choice.

TV movies are okay, as well as long, self-contained TV episodes of movie-length such as an episode of Black Mirror. Miniseries and other types of TV shows aren't eligible.

A movie can only be claimed by one person no matter the type of fanworks the creator chooses.

Do I have to stick closely to the plot of the movie? Nope! You are more than welcome to take the movie as a simple prompt and run away with your own idea, so long as it’s vaguely recognizable.

For example: You can choose, say, Mad Max: Fury Road, and set your fanwork in its post-apocalyptic desert-like world filled with dictatorian towns & awesome car chases without going over the events of the movie (the rig, saving the wives, etc). Though you can also incorporate elements of the movie if you choose: the war boys, or the towns, etc.

It is also possible to choose a single storyline within a movie (this is especially true for movies like Love Actually). You aren’t bound to follow the greater plot if you choose.

Basically: you decide.

How long does my story need to be? As stated in the rules above, it needs to be at least 1,000 words long. No upper limit.

Can I write a crossover? Yes and no. Since this is a hockey fest, focus on hockey players is preferable. You can use some of the movie canon characters if you want, but they should be supporting at most.

Example: If you write a Harry Potter fusion, Professor Sprout can show up during a herbology class, but it would be better if Jonathan wasn’t BFF with Harry.

Can I choose more than one movie? Yes and no. You can only claim one movie at a time. If you’ve submitted your fanwork to the AO3 collection and the fest is still ongoing and you wish to create another one, then you can claim a second movie so long as the movie isn’t already claimed.

NOTE TO FANARTISTS: if you have an idea for a series of fanart (movie posters for example) based on more than one movie, please contact the mod (see below for contact information), and we'll arrange something.

What kind of fanart is allowed? Every kind. Here fanart is used as shorthand for any kind of visual fanwork: art (digital or traditional), gifs, edits, vidding, crafts, etc.

Can I sign-up with a friend? Yes! Collabs are welcome! Just make sure both your names are stated in the sign-up (only one of you has to fill the sign-up form). Writers and artists can also work together. How does posting work? Fics (and possibly fanart if you wish) should be posted to the fest's AO3 Collection. A post will be made with more info closer to the dealine.

If you can't post to AO3 or you'd prefer posting on tumblr/elsewhere, a posting date will be given to you and you'll be able to post then. Contact the mod when your fanwork is done.

Webtoon Reclist

So I discovered a bunch of webcomics on Line Webtoon recently. I keep binging things, so here’s a list of recommendations from what I’m up to date on. Links to the comics themselves are included.

Completed

Always Human - Sunati Raval lives in a world where genetic modification is easy and hip, and she loves changing her look. Meeting Austen, a girl whose immune system rejects mods, makes Sunati see a new angle of things. She and Austen are interested in each other, but they only just met, so making this relationship float will take work from both parties.

Girls Have a Blog - Sarah and Tara had a webcomic while they were in art school, but after Webtoon found it years later and asked to feature it, they decided to make a new version on the same premise: the two of them living together and having adventures in art, writing, and adulting.

My Boo - Yuri So can see ghosts, but ever since she was young, she’s made it a point to never let anyone know, not even the ghosts. No matter what, when someone finds out it becomes a burden for her. Unfortunately, a careless mistake leads to her moving into a house inhabited by a ghost named Jun Ko. Yuri’s only able to ignore Jun for so long, and it’s time she finally confronted her personal demons.

Note: My Boo is on Webtoon’s “Daily Pass” system. The first five episodes are freely available, then every successive episode requires a Daily Pass to unlock for two weeks, of which a user will only get one a day without paying for more.

Oh! Holy - Jamie Oh has had a hard time making friends due to his ability to see ghosts. The one friend he had, Holy Joo, moved away long ago, abandoning their promise to see the world together. After that, he gave up on trying to connect with anyone but ghosts. But after Jamie crosses paths with Holy again in high school, an accident threatens her life, forcing the two to make a deal with a reaper to stay alive.

Orange Marmalade - Mari Baek is a vampire who only wants to live quietly in one place instead of being run out of town every time someone finds out what she is. Unfortunately, the most popular boy in her school takes a shine to her after her instincts get the better of her in the presence of his strong-smelling blood. She doesn’t like attention, but maybe a few friends and a boyfriend wouldn’t be so bad. Assuming, of course, that she can trust them.

Shard - Shay is a witch on the run from her coven, desperate to keep out of their control and live her own life. There’s a certain spell she wants to cast, a portal she wants to open, and the missing piece is a virgin. Her best bet is one of a group of geology nerds she manages to come across, but the trick will be getting him into the ritual before her coven can get their claws back on her.

Super Secret - As far as Emma Ji knows, she’s just very close with her next door neighbors. But the truth is that her parents signed a Rapunzel-esque contract with this family of supernatural beings after wronging them before Emma was born. The son of the family, Ryan, developed feelings for Emma over the years, but he’d rather do things on her terms than because of some contract.

unTouchable - Vampires have evolved over the centuries, moving from consuming blood to absorbing energy through touch. Sia Lee is one such vampire, and Jiho Shin – the best target she’s ever set her sights on – has extreme OCD, so she decides to help him get over it. Is Sia really going this far just for a meal, or is there actually something to her claim of feelings for Jiho?

Where Tangents Meet - Landon Takahashi was left cynical and bitter by 17 years of people pretending to like him for his money and balking at his geeky hobbies. Rachelle Fletcher is a year older, yet so sweet and flighty that she blows away all of Landon’s preconceived notions about people. They grow close quickly, and decide to navigate the foibles of their first serious relationship together.

#Blessed - Joanna is young and frustrated with her love life. She thinks playing around with a dating app will improve her situation, but things only get worse when a mistaken swipe locks her into a contract with a gaggle of godly beings who all want a chance at dating her. She has to choose one of them in the end, and they won’t leave her alone, but the rest is in her hands.

Aerial Magic - Wisteria Kemp is a textblind mage who dreams of doing aerial magic professionally. Her only hope of joining a guild and being officially qualified is an apprenticeship. Apprentices are a dying practice, so the only person who would take her on lives in a city far away from her town. Wisteria has to not only learn as much as she can from Cecily, but navigate interacting with Cecily’s son Lachlan and her employees Amal and Killian.

Assassin Roommate - Mags isn’t the most adept in social situations with new people, but she needs a roommate to afford her new place. She’s read all about the problems of being too close to one’s roommate, so she’s determined to be strictly professional. And as friendly and gorgeous as her new roommate Kurt is, he could never know about her job as an assassin even if they did get close.

Castle Swimmer - Many of the underwater kingdoms of merfolk have prophecies, but they all have one thing in common: they center around a golden mer called The Beacon arriving and bestowing some boon upon the kingdom. The shark kingdom is a cursed community, hoping against hope for The Beacon to arrive and fulfill their prophecy… of being killed by their prince to lift the curse. But what happens when neither prince nor beacon want any of this prophecy burden?

The Croaking - Humanoids with the wings of birds populate an island civilization. As an Osprey, Ky Cedoc is an unusual recruit at the Roost military academy. As a Crow, Scra Eldwode is even more unusual. How perfect, then, that these two misfits are placed as roommates on top of having met right before the semester started. Well, not so perfect, since Scra is hardly around, sneaking out every night, and there are whispers among the city gangs about something called The Croaking.

Crumbs - Urban fantasy meets easygoing slice of life. Every Friday, Ray makes a trip to her favorite magical bakery, where customers can buy pastries imbued with confidence, inspiration, anything you can imagine. Every week, Ray walks in and has her favorite flavor: romance. And one day, the baker’s nephew reaches out to her.

Empyrea - Soul-stealing demons known as keres plague the twelve realms, and only the Aetherborn knights have the power to combat them. Tristan, otherwise known as Hawk, is a strange knight who refuses to serve a lord. Kira is a young inventor straining against the expectations of her family. The two cross paths one night, and their lives begin to change.

Freaking Romance - Zylith is striking out on her own after being thrown out of her parents’ home at age 18. The only apartment she can afford on her savings was reported by previous tenants to be haunted, which only intrigues Zylith more because of her fondness for the paranormal. She’s excited to start seeing a boy who seems like a ghost around her apartment, until she and her friend do some digging and find out the last girl who lived there disappeared after seeing him.

I Love Yoo - Yoo Shin-Ae couldn’t care less about romance. She cares way more about food and making ends meet, and she loudly rejects any sort of advances. Through a series of shenanigans at a party, Shin-Ae’s life ends up entangled with two boys, one who takes a shine to her immediately and one who’s just as prickly about girls as she is about boys.

Ketchup - Soulmates aren’t necessarily a romantic relationship, but they do have a link that can pass glimpses of the five senses as well as emotions between the pair. Riley and Kelyn were childhood friends, but right when Riley was figuring out that they were linked, one wrong move destroyed their friendship. Years later, they’re reunited when Kelyn finally discovers their link. Kelyn wants to rekindle their old bond, but Riley still carries a grudge from their falling out.

Lackadaisy - In a version of prohibition-era St. Louis populated by anthropomorphic cats, the Lackadaisy speakeasy was once a booming beacon of night life. But with its owner dead, his widow Mitzi is left with a ragtag handful of employees and not enough booze to go around for her few customers. Mitzi will be damned before she sees the place her husband built die, and she will do whatever it takes to put Lackadaisy back on top.

Lore Olympus - This modern retelling of the Taking of Persephone sees the mythological Greek gods and heroes in a metropolitan setting. Persephone is a country mouse at her first big city party, and Aphrodite decides to play a trick on her and grim Hades. Persephone and Hades end up thoroughly embarrassed, but also oddly enchanted.

Mage & Demon Queen - The demon tower is a gauntlet where adventurers of the highest order test their mettle, but very few make it to the top, where the demon queen Velverosa dwells, and no one has ever managed to kill her. Many have died trying, respawning back in town to tell the tale. Malori is a young mage who climbs the tower countless times. She faces the demon queen over and over, in hopes of wooing her.

Melody of Orange - The Curse of Eve binds soulmates together, not by a love link but by a death link. When one dies, the other will die in the same manner, no matter the situation. While love isn’t explicitly part of the curse, soulmates are generally encouraged to be together. However, when Mikan meets a scary boy she finds to be her soulmate, she wants nothing to do with him. It’s not for the reasons you might think; it’s Mikan herself who’s carrying an intense guilt that makes her feel unworthy of happiness.

Nothing Special - Callie doesn’t think of herself as anything special, not when there are fairies, demons, and all sorts of magical creatures just beyond a doorway. A boy from her school disagrees when he’s freaked out by his sudden ability to see spirits and impressed by her knowledge of the supernatural. Together, they embark on a journey through the spirit world to save Callie’s dad, and maybe learn a little about themselves and each other along the way.

Siren’s Lament - Lyra is a bit of a wallflower, content with her ordinary life, content to run her flower shop and silently pine for her friend Shon while he dates someone else. But one night, her emotions get the better of her, and she ends up involved in a curse with a siren named Ian. Ian is the opposite of helpful, and the curse he brought with him is nothing but a burden, but he does challenge Lyra to seize the day and ask for more from her simple life.

Strawberry Seafoam - The Delphic Academy teaches magic to young mermaids who hope to one day become powerful Delphiniums. Frasei is one such mermaid, eager to follow in her mother’s footsteps, and her life does not at all go according to plan. Dark forces begin to mobilize around the academy, and Frasei finds herself the only one able to combat them with her newfound unique ability to transform her tail.

Tyran Awakening - Zoe is an average teen living in the not too distant future. When she picks a fight with some bullies, however, something unbelievable happens. She survives certain death, and she begins to feel powerful. Almost like a dragon. Ancient forces are awakened, and the only one Zoe feels she can trust with all this is her friend (or maybe more) Marthe.

unOrdinary - It’s a given in this world that just about everyone has some kind of superpower. John Doe is a rare exception, having no ability at all yet somehow going to a school with a high premium on abilities. He firmly believes that might shouldn’t make right, but it’s only due to his high-tier friend Seraphina that he hasn’t been beaten to death several times over for ignoring the hierarchy in place. (Warning for repeated use of the word “cripple” to describe John’s lack of powers)
