The Resilient Roadster: Why the Miata continues to reign for over 30 years.
Tumblr media
The Mazda MX-5, known in the States as the Miata, was first introduced in 1989. Since then, Mazda has blessed us with four generations of the MX-5. I remember the first time I ever began to appreciate this roadster. It was in the late 90’s as a kid playing the video game Gran Turismo. The Miata was one of the first cars you got to choose. It wasn’t flashy, but it was cool that it was in one of the most prestigious video games at the time. Fast forward over 20 years later and the Miata continues to be the best affordable sports car on the market.
I must admit, during my entire life I never thought about owning a Miata. It’s tiny, it’s not that fast and most of their owners are going through a mid life crisis. I found myself always desiring something practical yet fun to drive. The Miata is defined by the latter, however it is far from practical. I never had money to blow on a weekend driver; two seater sports car. So I always resorted to purchasing Sport Utility Vehicles, or four door sport sedans. After I sold my Acura TL type S, I was in desperate need of a vehicle. I visited an Alfa Romeo dealer with my heart set on purchasing a Giulia. I’ve always wanted an Alfa Romeo ever since I was a kid. My dad owned a late 80’s Alfa Romeo Milano and that was the family car throughout my childhood. When my dad drove by, I would brag to my friends that the Alfa would one day be mine. They would all laugh and clown on me because it was old and weird looking. But I loved it because it was Italian and different. I guess I felt like it represented me welI. I love having things that nobody knows about. Since I was a kid I always had to buy Nike’s that no one in school had. I mean it would seriously ruin my day if I saw someone else wearing my sneakers. I didn’t care if someone else liked what I had. I just preferred to stand out and I’ve carried that mentality into my adulthood. As far as the Alfa Romeo goes, I never got a chance to call it my own. My dad sold it to his mechanic a few years before I got my license. Bummer.
Tumblr media
Back at the dealership, I couldn’t score a decent deal on a Giulia. Instead, I noticed an automatic Fiat 124 Spider Abarth. I remember when the 124 Abarth came out, it was only offered with a manual transmission. Rightfully so, a car like that should only be offered with a standard 6 speed. However, I didn’t want my daily driver to have a manual gearbox. At the time I lived in Los Angeles, and I’m sure you all heard about LA’s traffic. So a stick shift wasn’t going to cut it in bumper to bumper. So here I am in front of the next best thing, an Italian sports car with a scorpion for a badge. It checked all the right boxes. It was different, sporty, fun, and most importantly Italian. It could fill that void of always wanting to own a unique, Italian automobile. But there was a problem, it wasn’t practical. I’ve never owned a two seater sports car with enough cargo capacity to squeeze in my toiletry bag. So I passed on the Spider and ended up leasing a crossover; how original. Recently, I had the luxury of temporarily owning both the 124 Abarth and Mazda Miata. After driving both cars for a few weeks, I could definitively say the Miata is the better sports car. Although I’ve grown to be biased towards Italian manufacturing, I must admit the Japanese roadster is without question the better option.
Tumblr media
The Miata featured in this article is a 2019 base model with 181 horsepower, an increase from 155 in the previous year. The 2.0 naturally aspirated inline 4 engine boasts 151 pound feet of torque with a curb weight less than 2400 pounds. It comes standard with a 6 speed manual gearbox and redlines at 7500 RPM’s. Combine this with the Miata’s fantastic handling and it’s enough to make you feel like you’re in a Formula 1 race car. The naturally aspirated engine makes the throttle feel extremely responsive. The gearbox shifts like butter and urges you to rev it all the way up to its redline. This Miata was by far the most fun I’ve ever had in a modern day roadster. It’s so light that you can just throw it into turns and still trust that it will remain in control. There is nothing in this world that is more fun than going through the gears in this car. The dual overhead cam engine is refined and appeals to many car enthusiasts for its simplistic design. The engine doesn’t have any plastic covers over it, rather it appears to look simple and easily accessible under the hood. This is something that is becoming more and more rare to find in the auto industry. Nowadays, engines come completely covered and require special tools to access. Automakers are discouraging people to work on their own cars. Not Mazda, just look at that engine, it looks like something straight from the past. As clichè as it may sound, Mazda knows if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Unlike Toyota with their Supra, Mazda will never offer their Miata without a standard transmission. They understand that the car is designed to operate with a manual. Going through the gears and hitting the perfect shift is what brings out the fun in a sports car. When BMW introduced the new Z4 last year, it did not offer a manual transmission. Same goes for Porsche with their latest 911. Dedicated fans were appalled when they found out a manual was not an option. BMW and Porsche listened to their supporters and released a manual transmission for both those models. These automakers paid attention to the feedback and understood that there is still a large enough market for manual transmission owners. Now automakers don’t want to make the same mistake. Look at Ford with their new Bronco, they offer a stick shift for the 4 cylinder model with a crawling gear! These stories are a true testament to the value us car enthusiasts bring to the table. Car companies are beginning to listen. Mazda however has been listening for decades and this latest Miata is the perfect example. A new and improved engine, handling that you can trust and of course the buttery smooth 6 speed transmission. Everything you want in a high revving sports car.
Tumblr media
Yes it isn’t practical and maybe it shouldn’t be your daily driver. But the Mazda Miata is still around because Mazda continues to put love into manufacturing their beloved roadster. What do I mean by putting love into it? Well think about your mom or grandma’s cooking. You know when they make your favorite comfort food with love. You can tell when you get the same dish at a restaurant and it’s not made with love. Mazda does the same with their Miata. They are consistent and refrain from cutting corners to save money. And if they do find themselves not pleasing their hardcore followers, they make adjustments with the following model. The improvements Mazda continues to make on the Miata is a testament to the roadster’s longevity. It still continues to thrive in an automobile market that finds companies reinventing new crossover SUV’s. Mazda in particular wasn’t satisfied with their lineup of crossovers. The CX-7 was one of the early pioneers of the vehicle class. Now Mazda offers four options, including the new CX-30. Like the CX-3 wasn’t enough, they had to confuse us with a slightly larger CX-30? Mazda could easily shift all their attention towards their SUV lineup and stop focusing on their tiny sports car. The Miata has never been Mazda’s bread and butter or volume vehicle; but it will always define their brand. In a world full of crossovers, props to Mazda for not neglecting their pride and joy, their roadster, the Mazda MX-5.

The Honda CRX Del Sol
If you’ve ever driven an Alfa Romeo, you know they’re special. It’s a cliche, but a true one. I used to own a little 146 with the 1.6 boxer engine and I absolutely loved it (until it decided to spit most of its diff and part of the gearbox onto my bosses driveway). It would buzz down the street like a mini WRX, cock it’s inner front wheel on tight corners, get me waves from other Alfa drivers (leather jackets, moustaches and all) and then I could chuck four friends in it and head up the coast for a weekend at the beach. A truly wonderful and quirky car. It seemed to achieve all this with no sign of actual performance either. Sure, the engine sounded good but it barely scraped 100bhp, and while the handling was awesome, it wouldn’t do me any good unless I was in the winding Italian countryside where this car was designed. It didn’t matter. Alfas of the 90’s were a drivers car, not a performance car.
Tumblr media
I thought hot Hondas from the 90’s, bar a little soul, were much the same. Something fun to drive when you couldn’t afford a turbo or a V8. A co-worker of mine at a well known Wellington pizza place owned a Honda CRX Del Sol VTi-S. In Fact, he owned 2 of them! I hated both. I thought not only has this car clearly tried to deceive me by attempting to look like a RWD, mid-engined sports car, it’s also sacrificed any style or practicality in doing so! This car was designed by an idiot, for an idiot. The idiot, in this case, was Chris. Chris loved Hondas more than any other. The kind of guy who had an NSX poster on his wall since he was 4 and would aggressively dismiss any other car as “shit”. He was wrong about most things in his life, Chris. He was incredibly bossy, valued money over any relationship and by far the laziest worker in the restaurant. But since he was quite often the only other car guy on my shift and everyone else was terrified of him, we’d end up chewing the fat more often than not.
One evening, after another shift-long debate, he figured the only way to convince me was to get me into the driver’s seat of the Del Sol. So, once the lights were off and the doors were locked, I followed him down to a quiet spot, just outside of town to a long, open and empty highway for some danger-free blasting. My doubts were inflated at this point. I thought “you idiot, little cars like these are built for corners, not long Hollywood black tops into the valley”.
I parked up, he shifted over to the passenger's seat and I settled in behind the wheel. It felt good. The position was low and the controls had that 90’s, Japanese, Gran Turismo 2 feel about them. The gearbox was tight and the engine blipped freely as I dabbed at the peddle. Definitely, a car designed for the person on the inside. “Go for it” instructed Chris. I eased into first to get a feel for the clutch, then punched it once I was over 2000rpm. It was quick, but nothing crazy. I changed up into second, did the same and felt the same. It was at this time that Chris said: “Stop, stop, stop!” I eased off. “Watch the gauges for when to change gear. Watch the red line”. I gunned the engine back alive in second, this time keeping my eyes on the gauges.
This is when stuff gets freaky in a Honda. Normally you listen and recognise an engine has to change gear at around 7000 rpm and every instinct was telling me to do so. It’ll just explode otherwise, but Chris was giving me the Obi-Wan treatment; “No! Use the Revs AJ!”. So I stayed in it. We passed 7000 rpm pushing off into the great unknown. The engine screamed like nothing I’d heard before. I’d heard motorbikes and F1 cars accelerate like this but not a street car, not a Honda. I assume it’s what people feel like when they see a ghost; it doesn’t make sense and it’s breaking all your worldly rules of reality but, it’s there. The needle kept on climbing well beyond the point of logic as I could feel a black hole opening around us, bending our reality. As the car was approaching 9000 rpm, I could bear no more. Either me or this car was about to lose it and so I shifted into third. Back down to 6500 rpm.
Oh yeah. This was perverted, and I wanted more. The power delivery was smooth and it seemed to be the world’s most generous barman, with revs on tap. We were flying at about 130 km/h by now. If Chris minded, I didn’t notice. I was absolutely hypnotised by this engine. It was the child that holds its breath underwater 20 seconds longer than you thought humanly possible, then pops up with you in a panic going “what’s the problem?” No problem Damien, you’re just a goddamn freak of nature is all.
We blasted on like a banshee through the night. 7500, 8000, 8500. 140, 150, 160, fully aware that the pistons in this car must be moving faster than 99.9999% of things on this planet could possibly move. What was this like? Death? An orgasm? Heaven? Hell? I didn’t know. I didn’t need to know. The feeling was enough. Just as I thought this car was about to destroy physics and send us back to 1955 Hill Valley, I changed up into fourth and eased off. I knew if I kept on it I would be all the way to 200 and then onto hell with Julian in tow.
“Holy balls!” I exclaimed through some manic laughter and between drags of the fastest cigarette ever smoked. I thought over the previous 15 seconds of my life/death. “You see now?” asked Julian. Yes, I do see now Chris. This is no Operatic Concerto like my Alfa, beautifully guiding you through winding corners with the girl of your dreams beside you. Or it’s not the awesome guitar riff that makes you laugh and smile as you chew jerky and burn tires in a Commodore SS. No. No this was death metal. This is the music you listen to before a fight, something to make you howl at the moon. This is the kind of thing you do when you wanna be bad to feel good. This is leather, whips and chains. This is awesome.
Everything else about the Del Sol is wrong: It’s hideous, they’re always in a weird colour, they’re slower and less practical than the Civics of this era thanks to its weird folding convertible roof and they were blatantly just made to chase the success of the MR-2. But that’s where the beauty lies in this car. Yeah, you’ll look like a fool in the parking lot or in heavy traffic, but once you unleash this thing on the open road or around a track, nothing can touch you. Not the guys laughing at you, not the girls ignoring you, not the taxman, not your boss, not that idiot with the blonde wig on the news, not your ex, not your lack of a vacation this year, not that tosser in a Q7 who cut you off and best of all, without even a hope of brushing you, not even your reflection. The Del Sol is your secret weapon, and it’s quite possibly a nuke.

Tumblr media
<span class="hidden">–</span>Divulgação/Alfa Romeo
Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA
Tumblr media
<span class="hidden">–</span>Divulgação/Alfa Romeo
Toyota SUV híbrido do Yaris
Tumblr media
VW Golf GTI/GTE/GTD e Tiguan reestilizado
Tumblr media

Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo

Alfa Romeo GTV: worthy heiress

Alfa Romeo GTV: worthy heiress
The name GTV, for Gran Turismo Veloce (Grand Tour Rapide in French), will return to Alfa Romeo in 2021 after more than 16 years of absence, and more than a decade after the disappearance of the last big coupe of the Italian brand. And, according to the first information distilled by the FCA group on this future model, it should do better than to live up to the reputation of its illustrious predecessors.
Giorgio platform
Developed on the Giorgio platform already used for the Giulia and Stelvio, the GTV will indeed be able to count on an excellent mechanical propulsion base or 4-wheel drive to compete with the Audi A5 Coupé, BMW 4 Series and Mercedes C-Class Coupé. Better, the one whose FCA leaders have already unveiled the silhouette will be declined in a version of advanced that should be able to be both more powerful and more restrained than its German rivals RS5, M4 and C63 AMG.
Hybrid version of more than 600 hp
To achieve this result, the GTV will not be content to take over the V6 2.9 liters biturbo Giulia QV, it should add a hybrid system that will bring the cumulative power of the power train to more than 600 hp, while allowing a 100% electric range of about 50 km. That lovers of beautiful Italian reassure, Alfa Romeo did not say his last word.

Review: The BMW 640i xDrive GT
is the nicest hatchback you’ll ever drive
If you go to an auto show, you'll notice that German carmakers tend to have a lotof models in their lineups. Not so much Porsche, but Audi, Mercedes-Benz, and especially BMW have a dizzying array of cars to choose from. For those contemplating an Ultimate Driving Machine, you've got your 1 Series all the way through the 7 Series, the X models, the Z4, M models, and the i Series. The lineup looks straightforward at first glance, but it's really not. Want a coupe or convertible? 2-, 4-, or 6-series. [N.B. this includes those four-door "coupes" that still confuse me—Ed.] How about a sedan? 3-, 5-, or 7-series. SUV? X marks the SUV spot, unless it's an X4 or X6, which look more like a 3-series or 6-series GT. Hatchback? 3- or 6-series. And that's where I found myself last week, behind the wheel of an $84,000 hatchback. The 640i xDrive Gran Turismo is new to BMW's lineup this year.  Previously, BMW's high-end hatchback was a 5-series car, but the German automaker decided to move the model a bit upscale while continuing to use the 5-series platform. The GT is also the least-expensive 6-series car, starting at $69,700 for the base model. The model I drove was maxed out with the M Sport package, Driving Assistance Plus, Dynamic Handling Package, and Executive Package. Add in the destination charge and a couple of other bits, and the sticker price is $84,010. That's a big number for a body type that is not that popular in the US. The mechanical bits on the 640i GT are compelling. Powering the car is a 3.0-liter inline-six engine, turbocharged to crank out 335hp (250kW) and 332lb-ft (450Nm) of torque. It's gas only for the US, with a diesel engine available in other markets. An eight-speed automatic transmission is paired with all-wheel drive. The Dynamic Handling package adds active roll stabilization, height-adjustable air springs that are new to the 640i, dynamic shock control, and rear-wheel steering. All of that combines for a zero-to-60 speed of 5.1 seconds, according to BMW.

Loads of room in back.
All of the performance in the world isn't enough if you don't like the looks. I've always associated hatchbacks with the lower end of the car market—perhaps not surprising given that I used to drive a 1981 Plymouth Horizon. That car was hideous; the 640i GT is anything but. The forward-sloping profile gives an impression of readiness to run hard, and to me, the shape of the 640i is reminiscent of a Saab 900. There are also hints of the Alfa Romeo Montreal or maybe a Datsun 280Z 2+2. Obviously, the 640i is a four-door four-seater, not a 2+2, but they're at least second cousins on the family tree... maybe a couple of times removed. There are no sharp angles or unnecessary trim on the 640i GT. The front has what BMW calls air curtains and air breathers under the front license plate holder and below BMW's familiar kidney grill. A side-skirt design element runs nearly from wheel well to wheel well down near the bottom of the doors, providing a bit of visual interest from the side. Speaking of wheels, you'll roll away on 19-inch rims (alloy if you go with the M Sport package). All said, the 640i GT sports a very clean-looking design. Frameless windows top the soft-close doors (with the Executive Package, at least, which also gets you BMW's excellent heads-up display). Slide into the comfortable, 16-way adjustable driver seat (with extendable thigh support) and the terrain will look familiar to anyone who has sat behind the wheel a BMW. The leather-wrapped steering wheel is heated, and behind it is BMW's instrument panel, which combines an HD display with physical elements of an analog dial. The dials themselves differ depending on whether you're in Eco, Sport, or Comfort mode.  I love BMW's heads-up display, except when I'm wearing polarized sunglasses. When I'm not, not only can I see my speed and the local speed limit, but I can see GPS directions, radio stations, fuel warnings, and driver-assist info. The center console has the standard two cup holders positioned right up against the dashboard, a wireless charging pad, dual climate control for the driver and passenger seat, and the usual dial and buttons needed to interact with BMW's infotainment system, iDrive. I covered iDrive (and the instrument panel) in some detail in my review of the X3, so look there if you want more thoughts on it. That said, the combination of dial, buttons, touch-screen, and a 10-inch display makes for a fantastic way to interact with the 640i. If nothing else, you'll be very comfortable inside the 640i xDrive GT. With lumbar support and bolster adjustment, the front seats are comfortable for longer trips. My only complaint is the cup holder at the bottom front of the door, which I noticed mostly when my lower leg would rest against it. There's plenty of headroom and leg room, both in the front and back seats. The rear seats are spacious, with suede pads on the headrests and a motor to adjust the backrest angle. Even with the gently sloped roof and moon roof, there's plenty of headroom for tall folks. The only thing missing from the backseat is a USB port or two—in 2018, USB ports are more useful than cigarette lighters. Aside from that, it's the ideal "black car" back seat. There's also plenty of room behind the back row—31 cubic feet, and if you fold the rear seats down 40-20-40 style, that number more than doubles, to 65 cubic feet. As an aside, the hatchback and height of the car makes for a perfect impromptu locker room. I had to referee a rugby match on a cold, wet Saturday morning, and I had forgotten to grab the fold-up lawn chair I use for changing. I popped the hatchback open, sat down, and put on my boots in relative comfort.

A close-up of the rear spoiler.
Driving the 640i xDrive GT is rewarding. The interior is quiet, blocking out most road noise. With the 5.1-second trip from zero to 60, the GT is very fast off the mark. Actually, it's always fast when you want it to be. It's one of those cars that makes you do a double-take at the speedometer because it doesn't feel like you're going that fast. Especially on highways; where I needed a bit of oomph to change lanes and pass a slowpoke, the GT felt instantly responsive. BMW provides three ride options with the 640i: Comfort, Sport, and Eco. Put it in Comfort and the result is a stable and comfortable ride where you'll feel connected to the road while remaining blissfully unaware of pavement imperfections and the like. There's still plenty of zip when you open up the throttle, but the handling is more akin to that of a luxury sedan in Comfort mode. Sport mode is where it's at with the 640i. Not only is it blazing fast, with accelerated shift points, but the car is nice and grippy. And once you get over 75mph, the car will drop 0.39in via the adaptive suspension. Cornering is just plain fun, with the 640i leaning into curves with confidence. I may have even laughed out loud once or twice while tooling down a winding, hilly country road. The only downside to Sport mode for some will be the piped-in engine noise. I'm a sucker for the sound of a finely tuned engine and exhaust system, so I didn't mind it too much, but it ain't the real thing, either. Unless you're down to your last gallon of gas and far away from a service station, don't bother with Eco mode. I tried it a couple of times, and not only did it make the car feel sluggish, but it sucked the joy out of the cockpit. Speaking of gas, BMW touts 23mpg for the 640i xDrive GT: 20mpg in the city and 28mpg on the highway. In a week of (really fun) driving, I wound up averaging 21.4mpg on a combination of highway, suburban, rural, and city trips. The 640i also offered my first opportunity to try out BMW's driver-assistance tech, which requires the $1,700 Driving Assistance Plus package. That includes the usual adaptive cruise-control, lane-departure warning, and lane-keep assist. Lane-departure warning is on by default, and when you wander out of your lane, you'll get a gentle vibration on the steering wheel. Lane-keep assist is activated by a button on the steering wheel, and the heads-up display will show that it's active. It's one of the better systems that I have tested. Should you drift over the line, the car offers gentle correction, just enough to recenter you in your lane. It also handles curves—the kind you'd see on an interstate with a speed limit of 65mph—very nicely. If you drop your hands off the wheel, you'll be prompted to remedy the situation. Adaptive cruise control works well, too, even in heavy traffic. Off the highway, it will come to a complete stop at a red light if there's a car stopped in front of you. Press the Resume button, and you'll be back on your way. BMW has built a very nice car with the 640i xDrive GT. It's an excellent combination of style, comfort, and handling with little in the way of compromise. I'd even say that the 640i is BMW at its best, using its engineering experience and expertise to craft a vehicle that is an absolute blast to drive. At the same time, we're talking about an $84,000 hatchback here. I have a hard time recommending anyone buy anything this expensive. What's more, the 640i is a body type that's not the most popular to begin with—and virtually nonexistent at this price point. Price tag aside, hatchbacks aren't for everyone, but because BMW insists on being all things to all people, we have the 640i at the top of the BMW hatchback heap, above the 3-series GT, X4, and X6.  The top of the heap is rarified air, especially when the entry point is $70,000. If you like the styling of the 640i and want the ultimate driving experience, climb on up and breathe deeply. You won't be disappointed. Listing image by Eric Bangeman
