Episode Four: Random Rewatch Observations
1. Shout out to Sophia and Lady Jane, sticking it to Barrow re: Arctic geography, how far the Admiraltyâs messages have reached, and his general condescension.
2. Their breath is visible in the air as theyâre leaving the Admiralty building and talking specifically about Sir John.Â
3. Jopson is hilarious even before his little innocent âMe, sir?â line when he first enters the scene saying âSorry to interrupt!â. Like, yes, sorry to interrupt your busy schedule of sitting in the dark doing literally nothing, sir! Great stuff.
4. Also shout out to Little being very competent off-screen, already making plans to move Terrors over to Erebus before Crozierâs even thought about it.
5. Love Crozier just pissing directly in front of Jopson too â another obvious thing but it just makes me laugh.
6. I think I spy Little doing his patented Awkward Shoulder Pat of Comfort to someone as they all troop back onto the ship. Heâs not in his slops a few moments later so it seems likely that itâs him and that he stayed behind to hold down the fort while they were out searching.
7. Another thing thatâs been pointed out by others, but I love MacDonaldâs annoyed table tapping â heâs so not in the mood.
8. âLook out for yourself.â âOh, I willâŚâ
Like, oh I bet you will, Hickey, sweetheartâŚ
9. Just a thought but Hickeyâs âWhoâs that?!â when he finds Strong/Evans on watch strikes me as unique. I donât know if they had specific phrases or codes to challenge and identify each other when on watch but all Iâm saying is that it would make sense if they did and it would make sense for that to be another thing Hickey doesnât know.
10. Extra-gruesome to note that the legs and the torso appear to be facing opposite directions.
11. How do we all feel about Hickeyâs whole spiel in front of the Captains, and the fact that Manson and Hartnell stay completely silent throughout it? Do we think heâs outright lying or what? The idea of them interrupting Silna in her attempt to take control of Tuunbaq isnât completely outlandish in and of itself, after all â she tries to do just that two episodes later - and surely if heâs just making it up completely then the other two would challenge that to try and save their own skins?
12. Also have to laugh at Goodsirâs helpful âFoodâŚ!â when he takes Silna some âdinnerâ. Like, I think she realises itâs food, Harry, she just thinks itâs bloody horrible (which it is!).
13. I am absolutely obsessed with how puffy they both look here. Look at their little sticky-out tum-tums! Silly little Weeble men.

I am too angry to sleep so I may as well post about this.
Alexander Darwall is a hedge fund manager who owns 4000 acres of Dartmoor. He has contested the right of the public to camp on his land. And he has won.
This has been portrayed in the media as a loss of the 'right to roam'. This is a stupid way to phrase it. We never had the right to roam. We have never had the right to wander and live on the land. The Romani people and travelling communities whose way of life is criminalised know this - but of course there isn't so much of a mention of the 'right to roam' until white middle class people think their children's dofe expedition might be threatened.
Anyway, I digress. Despite my badly-worded cynicism, this is a loss, and I am furious.
I am local. I have always lived in Devon, between the two moors. My dad knows the westcountry like the back of his hand. He and I could cross the county with our eyes closed. The tors and rivers and moorland raised me as much as he or my mum did.
And still, neither of us would claim Dartmoor as our own. Because it is not our land to claim.
But, as is the insurmountable self-centredness and inconceivably egotistical nature of the rich, Alexander Darwall visits the westcountry a couple times (as all rich people do, to recline in their seaside holiday cottage for the two weeks of the year that the ghost town they've driven all local people out of is actually populated, by other posh pricks, only to fuck off again and leave behind poverty and a decimated housing market), and decides that the local people can't be trusted with such beautiful land, and thinks he deserves to own it. And manage it.
Because of course the local peasants couldn't know anything about conservation. We don't have a connection to this land, oh no, nothing as strong as the connection between a rich man and the estate he can shoot pheasants on.
It makes my blood boil. The evil of it, the condescension. People like Alexander Darwell know nothing about the moor. It's not just about walking on it a few times: when you're local, you know it. You've seen it in all of its forms, all months and all seasons, you've seen it at its most beautiful and most ugly, you've endured its cold to stare at the stars, you know its history and you've followed its standing stones, walked silently and respectfully past its tombs and barrows, you've replanted trees and held the earth in your hands, you've counted the deer bolving, you've built the structures that will rewet the moorland and return its life, you've sampled the soil from the bottom of trenches and carefully replaced every layer to disturb it as little as possible, and you've sweated and ached to see all of these things and give all of this to the moor.
And still, the land is not yours to own! You can do all of this - I have done all of this - and still the land is not yours, and it is not mine.
And you can do none of this, and you should still have a right to access it. That is the point of our conservation efforts.
Conservation is the old men and women who I've planted trees with, the archaeologists I've uncovered my county's history with, my dad and his colleagues working on projects to protect the moor and the climate that is harmed by the loss of carbon-rich peat.
Conservation is not a hedge fund manager privatising the land for profit. It is not the mindless, evil promise of capital, that compels Alexander Darwall to build fences around Dartmoor and lock up his land. His land. I feel sick typing it.
Because ultimately, this was done for profit. There is contempt in it - Darwall has no respect for local people who aren't far-right politicians he can buy - but the main motivation is money. The national park will now give him money, money which should be spent on conservation projects but is now going into an evil millionaire's pocket, and the rich cunts who can't wait to butcher the pheasants and deer that should be existing wild, in naturally-sized populations, will give him money to shoot and hunt on his land and leave the carcasses there to rot.
I am angry. I am so, so angry.
I have every intent to camp on Darwall's land. I will break his locks and tear down his fences, and every local who can should do the same.
Dartmoor is no one's. But if it must belong to someone, it should belong to us, and not to him.

Margaret( Russell ) McIver was born on May 9th 1879.
âMaggieâ went on to found the famous Barras in Glasgow..
Maggie was born Margaret Russell in 1879, to Margaret Hutcheson, a french polisher and Alexander Russell, a policeman, in either Bridgeton or Ayrshire sources differ. Maggie Queen of the Barras, had her first taste of business when she looked after a family friendâs fruit barrow in Parkhead. She was just 12 years old at the time.
Maggie met her husband and future business partner James McIver at the local fruit market. The couple ran a small business in the Calton, hiring out horses and carts to local hawkers, mainly women, on a daily basis.
After the first world war, the McIvers started organising Saturday markets on land that would become the present-day Barras market. In 1926, Maggie decided the market should be covered, as she was concerned about the health of the hawkers in bad weather.
When husband James contracted malaria during the war and died, Maggie was left to raise nine children and think of new ways to raise income.
She came up with the idea of opening a ballroom above the market, partly to give the hawkers somewhere to hold their Christmas dance. The Barrowland is now a world-renowned, much-loved and respected music venue, famous for its sprung floor and impressive list of performers.
Maggie asked former Bluebirds bandleader Billy McGregor to form a resident band for the Barrowland and it became Billy McGregor and the Gaybirds, a hit with Glasgowâs dancers throughout the thirties. Foxtrots and waltzes were the order of the day until American servicemen introduced jiving and jitterbugging during the Second World War.
When Maggie died in 1958, astute, caring and creative businesswoman Maggie McIver was a multi-millionaire.
The ballroom was burned down in a massive fire shortly after Maggieâs death, but reopened in 1960, with the famous neon signage erected around 1982.
The world-renowned music venue is still owned by Margaret McIver Ltd and has played host to some of the biggest musicians from across the world from David Bowie to Oasis, I was last there in September 2021 to see the late great Terry Hall and his band The Specials.

Avebury by Truus, Bob & Jan too! Avebury, England. Bob and Jan went on holiday to South West England. Avebury (/ËeÉŞvbÉri/) is a Neolithic henge monument containing three stone circles, around the village of Avebury in Wiltshire, in south-west England. One of the best-known prehistoric sites in Britain, it contains the largest megalithic stone circle in the world. It is both a tourist attraction and a place of religious importance to contemporary pagans. Constructed over several hundred years in the third millennium BC, during the Neolithic, or New Stone Age, the monument comprises a large henge (a bank and a ditch) with a large outer stone circle and two separate smaller stone circles situated inside the centre of the monument. Its original purpose is unknown, although archaeologists believe that it was most likely used for some form of ritual or ceremony. The Avebury monument is part of a larger prehistoric landscape containing several older monuments nearby, including West Kennet Long Barrow, Windmill Hill and Silbury Hill. By the Iron Age, the site had been effectively abandoned, with some evidence of human activity on the site during the Roman period. During the Early Middle Ages, a village first began to be built around the monument, eventually extending into it. In the late medieval and early modern periods, local people destroyed many of the standing stones around the henge, both for religious and practical reasons. The antiquarians John Aubrey and William Stukeley took an interest in Avebury during the 17th and 18th centuries, respectively, and recorded much of the site between various phases of destruction. Archaeological investigation followed in the 20th century, with Harold St George Gray leading an excavation of the bank and ditch, and Alexander Keiller overseeing a project to reconstruct much of the monument.
