I love it when characters have inherent animal imagery. I love when it’s unsubtle, right out in the open for everyone to see. From the way they act to the way they interact with others to the language used to describe them. When they try to escape it but they can’t because it is their very nature. When they fear or hate themselves for it but have to learn to accept it instead, using it for their advantage. Animal imagery.

"Human saliva reverses the magic." And Alex did it herself.
Darlington, I expected you to do it, with a few kisses on her collarbone. Shame on you.
(I haven't read Hell Bent though)

One of things I love most about Leigh Bardugo's books is her focus on the violence committed against women and girls. In Shadow and Bone, there's Genya and Alina. Both have been manipulated by the Darkling and exploited, Alina for her power, and Genya for her beauty. Genya was repeatedly raped by the king and the Darkling refused to help her because he wanted to use her as a spy. The Darkling and the Apprart saw Alina and her powers as a way to push their agendas and gain power.
In Six of Crows, there's Inej and Mayra Hendriks. Inej has sold into human trafficking as a young teen and suffered abuse from men. Even when Kaz rescues her from Tante Heleen, she is still bound to Per Haskell. Then in Crooked Kingdom, she is kidnapped by Van Eck and starved and threatened with torture. Mayra Hendriks, Wylan's mother, was put into an asylum by her husband for having a child with a disability.
King of Scars explores Zoya's character more and we learn that she was almost a child bride to a pedophile, and was then manipulated by the Darkling when her aunt rescued her by taking her to the Little Palace. Nina discovers the full extent of the misogyny in Fjerda in these books too. She finds the Fjerdan Grisha women, who are being drugged and forced to have children for the government. Through Hanne and Nina's experiences with Jarl Brum, we see how men like him confine women and their femininity into a rigid box.
In Ninth House, Alex has suffered so much at the hands of men. Len, her ex-boyfriend, was abusive to her. Eitan the drug dealer also exploited Alex for her ability to use the strength of Grays. There were also the women like Tara who are murdered for greed and power. Mercy and Hellie are two young women who were raped by powerful men.
I am sure that I have forgotten some characters and I apologize for that. Violence against girls and women is something that tends to get swept under the rug, so to speak, and I am glad that Leigh Bardugo touches on this topic repeatedly in her books.

I think I’ve identified why Leigh Bardugos romances make me so rabid. It’s because the characters become insanely intimate before they ever kiss or “get together”. Like Zoya literally chaining Nikolai into bed every night? Nine and Matthias huddling nude for warmth in a hut after a shipwreck?? Kaz and Inej saving each others lives 400 million times??? Alex holding Darlingtons goddamn soul inside of her?????????

Erin Reed at Erin In The Morning:
On Wednesday, viral posts on Facebook and Twitter falsely identified a transgender person as Trump’s shooter. These posts, shared by right-wing disinformation accounts, gained millions of views and were amplified by major far-right figures. The individual in the image has now come forward, stating she is not the shooter. This incident is the latest in a series of attempts to falsely claim a shooter is transgender by using the picture of a random trans person from social media. The major source on Twitter for the image appears to be Paul Hookem, a right-wing disinformation account. According to the account’s profile, it was previously banned for four years before being reinstated by Elon Musk. In a post by the account, the transgender woman’s picture was used along with the caption, "Anyone wondering why they aren't using this photo of the shooter?" The image of the person bore little resemblance to the shooter. The post received 7 million views, with many quote tweets gaining additional millions of views.
Now, the person depicted in the photograph has come forward in an exclusive interview with Erin In The Morning. Her name is Rose, and she learned about her picture going viral after a friend alerted her to a now-deleted Facebook post. Rose was alarmed to see her image, stating, “I’m just an artist, I enjoy drawing and writing, and occasionally playing video games. I’m literally the most average random person…” This is not the first time mass shooters have been incorrectly identified as transgender by right-wing accounts. In the Uvalde shooting, an unrelated transgender woman’s pictures went viral and were shared by major right-wing influencers and sitting United States representatives. Fact checks later corrected the disinformation: the person depicted in the photos was Sam, a transgender woman who lives in Georgia. In Texas, a megachurch shooter was also incorrectly identified as transgender. Similarly, right-wing influencers like Libs of TikTok and sitting congresspeople shared the disinformation before it was fact-checked.
The far-right disinformation machine is playing their “trans shooter hoax” games by baselessly insinuating that a trans woman was the shooter who tried to assassinate Donald Trump. The trans woman in question spoke to Erin Reed to debunk the far-right disinformation machine’s “trans shooter hoax” propaganda.
In reality, the shooter who tried to assassinate Trump was a cisgender male by the name of Thomas Matthew Crooks.
