Alright, I don’t want to sound repetitive or anything BUT you should know I’ve always had a soft spot for etymology (I even gave a presentation about it back in school), and since my last name can absolutely be considered the Italian adaptation of our beloved Lord Capon, I got hyperfixated and… I did some research 👀

First off—why we “translate” names into Italian?

There’s no real reason, and technically we shouldn’t do it, BUT here there’s a strong tendency to adapt names.

Mostly because of Fascism, actually, Mussolini was obsessed with Italian pride and didn’t want any anglicisms, so many names, especially Anglo or ancient ones, were linguistically adapted, and that trend is still ongoing.

(Examples: Marie Antoinette → Maria Antonietta; Prince Charles → Principe Carlo; Queen Elizabeth → Regina Elisabetta; Aristotle → Aristotele; Alexander the Great → Alessandro Magno, etc.)

So. I started digging! 👀

First, I looked into why the Czech name Jan Ptáček became Hans Capon in English.

Basically, Jan became Hans because it’s a German adaptation of John, and since it seems there were already enough Johns in the game, they chose Hans instead. Which makes sense 🤷🏻‍♀️

Now… Capon.

Oh, here’s where it gets juicy 😈

Ptáček in English roughly translates to “bird” (and I think the Czech voice acting even uses that imagery as a nickname).

But what’s a capon? It’s a castrated rooster, fattened for food.

Nice metaphor, right?

Because it ties beautifully into how Hans feels “castrated” in a symbolic way—chained to duty, restrained by Hanush.

And what’s the Italian for capon?

Cappone. With a double p and an e at the end.

But if we want to keep the sound similar without the double consonant, it becomes: Capone. (Like me, eheheh)

(Let’s just forget for a second that Capone is also one of the most infamous mobster surnames in the world—Al Capone—and yes, I got bullied as a kid for that until I nearly passed out 😒)

And Hans/John? That would be Giovanni.

So in Italian, he’d plausibly be called Giovanni Capone,

which honestly sounds exactly like someone who could be a distant relative of mine from southern Italy (where I was born, and where Giovanni is one of the most common names) 🤣

And I strongly believe Warhorse actually did this kind of research for the localization!

But then… why does the Italian guy in one of the KCD2 promo videos call Luke Dale "Hansi Caponi" when he recognizes him?

Here’s my theory:

They probably concluded that “Capone” was the most coherent and plausible adaptation, BUT there’s a strong issue with how vowels are pronounced in Italian vs. English.

And here’s where it gets a bit tricky to explain without being able to actually let you hear the sounds:

Italian and English vowels are basically flipped. 😅

A in English sounds like the Italian E

E sounds like the Italian I

I sounds like the Italian A

(Go listen to the Italian alphabet and you’ll understand why second graders struggle so much learning English pronunciation — Yes, it's me the drama)

So, I’m convinced that when someone at Warhorse read “Capone” aloud, they pronounced it as “Caponi”, and that’s how we ended up with “Hansi Caponi”.

Now—let’s talk about Henry.

This one’s way simpler, because he doesn’t really have a proper surname.

He just signs as “of Skalitz”, like many historical figures did (Leonardo da Vinci being the most famous example).

And in the Italian subtitles, Skalitz is actually one of the few place names that’s translated (along with Prague/Praga, obviously), and it becomes Scalica.

So, the adaptation of Jindřich is Henry in English, and Enrico in Italian.

Which means, he’d simply be: Enrico di Scalica.
