i'd noted way back in my caeldori interview ( yo, 3 years ago........ ) that the winged headband she always wears is a sentimental gift from her mother — whoever that is. it'd always struck me as a part of her design that makes her look younger than she actually is — even taking into consideration that i've been aging her up in toa in accordance with the actual years she's spent as part of the group's narrative — and i kind of decided to fold that in as part of her characterization:

caeldori is aware ( painfully, even ) that the headband is kind of a puerile touch, and indeed it was a gift from when she was much younger. she thinks about finally getting rid of it, or at least not wearing it anymore, ( aging out of it ), every once in a while; but each time, she ultimately ends up not having the heart to do so. she felt very close to her parents growing up despite only seeing them once every few years or so insofar as how time moved for her; as a result, any token of them helps her feel more like they were a proper family and gives her a much-coveted sense of normalcy, and so was and continues to be greatly treasured.

You ponder the best way to respond, the sound of water from the fountain all that fills the space. Things had been tense between you recently, Belphegor seemingly taking more chances to push you away just as it seemed you two were growing closer. Was this another attempt to insert distance, to hold you at arm's length?

“I did, at first.” It’s best to be honest, you think. It was true that your relationship had been an … interesting one, to say the least. ���But, time has passed. You know how important you are to me now.”

A ‘tch’ leaves his lips, gaze lowering as he shakes his head before bringing his knees to his chest. There’s a heaviness that surrounds him, sinking into the atmosphere around you. “I just �� I don’t understand. I don’t get you.”

“What do you mean?” You ask warily, unsure where he was going with this.

“I just … “ His hands go to his head, claws digging into his scalp as he tries to form the words he wishes to speak. “You’re too nice. After everything I did, you still manage to smile and spend your days with me.” His body is trembling, you notice now. Basked in the dim moonlight like this, he looks so terribly vulnerable, like a lost child being swallowed by the shadows. “I...I feel like I’m waiting on the day you don’t want me tomorrow.”

“Belphie…” Your arms go to wrap around his shuddering frame, your lips going to gently rest against his temple. There is an ache in your chest, wanting to comfort both him and yourself but you know that it will only hurt to speak assurances that cannot be guaranteed. “I … I can’t promise things will always stay the same. I don’t know what the future holds, neither of us do, but…” You brush the hair that so often obscures half of his visage to the side, gently placing your fingers around the demon’s jaw as you turn him to look at you.

“But what I know is that now, in this moment, I want to be with you, Belphegor. Isn’t that enough?”

The look in his eyes tells you that he’s not sure if it is, but he leans forward to rest his forehead against yours, his body having calmed to a still in your embrace. His voice is soft yet heavy with a longing that wraps tightly around your heart.

“I want it to be.”
