ChenAi's 1st Time (Kiseki: Dear to Me) & MhokDay's 1st Time (Last Twilight)

ChenAi's 1st time had me in a chokehold for months. Every time I watch it I'm like: wow, cinema, absolutely fucking fantastic.

The dialogue before, the crying, the things that happen after... You know what Ai Di is doing is wrong, Ai Di knows what he's doing is wrong... Chen Yi finally realises what it actually means to love someone...

Oof. Such a good fucking scene. Chiang Tien ATE, okay? Ate. (Chen Bowen as well, ofc, but this was not his scene)

And MhokDay... As previously established, I do think that there are a lot of good things in Last Twilight, despite its last few episodes. This is one of them.

I loved that scene so much, it was so... Grounded? Ig, that's the word, really, yeah. I felt so at peace watching it, it made me really happy for the characters that they got to have that moment in such a calm and loving environment like that. It was really nice.

AlanJeff's absolute bliss got to me. They were just so... Engaged with each other and devoted to one another and in the moment like... There was such a strong sense of belonging...

It's the consent for me, okay? It's still so rare to see it so explicitly in BLs that the entire thing to me was an absolute victory. Plus it's a really important thing for me personally so it was very cathartic to watch Win be so adamant about answering the questions and getting clear answers.

The Nameless City trilogy by Faith Erin Hicks (rereading it recently with the other two volumes I snagged at TCAF was amazing!)

Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer (watching the movie first scared me cause I don't do well with horror, but the horror aspect of this is one that lingers and isn't just all jump scares. It's the existentialism of it all that captivates me much more, happy to say that the book gives more of that)

This Is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone (SO GOOD, I CANT RECOMMEND THIS ENOUGH. Changed my life, made me cry, made me even more gay than before. i want to draw fanart SO BAD)

Stories of Your Life by Ted Chiang (it's a compilation of many short stories from Chiang in the early 2000s, and it's hard for me to name favourites cause they are all very strong and they all have wonderful ways of linking different sciences to philosophy concepts)

All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr (it took me many years to finally finish this book but it's a good journey, Doerr's writing is prose-like and I enjoy the melody of it)

the Captive Prince trilogy by C S Pacat (so gay. truly unparalleled problematic enemies to lovers. I would say to go into this with the mindset that you're going to be upset, but from what little I've seen of game of thrones this book series has content matter that's p much is about the same level of brutal-ness as GOT at times)

the Witch Hat Atelier series by Shirahama Kanome (Shirahama's art style is my ideal, and everything about this series captures the feelings of aspiring artists so well, and successfully weaves it all into a wonderful tale that is just as attention grabbing even on my second reread)

Queer Ducks by Elliot Scrafer (changed my life, made me gayer :) please read it for good gay science)

Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao (changed my life too, made me love triangle polycules forever. I love that Xiran wrote this book out of spite and wrote the best girl to support women's wrongs)

The Sweetness At the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley (the Flavia de Luce series has been a longtime favourite of mine, I should really keep up with the newer books that have been coming out, but here's my pitch: if you love young girl detectives who are stubborn as hell and live for danger, this is the book for you. The protag loves poisons and I love that she has an unhinged interest towards mortality and biochemical murder methods)

End of year reading round-up! Woo-hoo!

My reading goal for 2023 was to read a book a week – while using very broad definitions of “book” (includes things like plays, novellas, and graphic novels), “read” (audiobooks and radio recordings count, not just written texts), and “week” (sometimes I read multiple short things in a week, sometimes it took me two or three weeks to get through a longer book).  I’m also defining “finished” as when I’m done with the book, but not necessarily when I’ve read every word on every page – I picked and chose chapters a bit from the essay collections, for example, and bounced off a few books halfway through if they just weren't for me or weren't for me at that time. Anything with an asterisk is a reread.  I have these roughly in chronological order of when I finished them, but I tended to be in the middle of several books at once and didn’t keep a good spreadsheet to keep track, so it’s a bit cobbled together from my memory and library records.  Also, please note that just because I read a book, doesn’t mean I agree with or endorse all or even most of the ideas in it.
