The Canonicity of the Digimon Wonderswan Games
I am right now a bit back into my old Digimon hyperfixation I am afraid. So let me nerd out a bit more about it, or in this case rant about another thing.
See, I am in a bit of a weird position in regards of this fandom. I am from Germany, where we got the dub names and stuff, but the Japanese cut of the anime. But also, I switched to watching the sub already by the time Digimon Tamers was starting to air in Japan, and had fairly easy access to most of the Japanese media for the franchise through the magic of the internet.
As such I grew up with the Japanese stuff for Digimon in the most part. Including the Wonderswan games, that are kinda legendary in the west. And man, let me tell you: I love those games. They are not really good games, I would argue. Like the game mechanics are just not very polished, and like in a lot of Japanese games at the time you needed to grind quite a lot. But I loved the story and the way it was portrayed. And I adore the game version of Ryou. He is my cute baby boy, who needs a serious hug.
However... Something that I have already been annoyed with was the fact that a lot of western fandom has always seen these games as canon. And I kinda get why - at least in regards to Adventure/02 - given that Ryou gets referenced in the canon a lot. It is canon that Ryou exists in this universe, as well as Millenniumon. And it is canon that Ken and Ryou travelled through the digital world. However... The game as it is, is in fact not canon and never was meant to be. This is because games very much contradict several aspects of the primary canon (the show). Let us go through those things, okay?
Anode/Cathode Tamer
This game takes place on New Years Eve 1999, so about 4 (or really 5) months after Digimon Adventure. Millenniumon, a Digimon that has been formed when the data of the defeated Machinedramon fused with a Chimeramon, messed up the digital world and brought back the villains the Chosen Children had already defeated. Being brought back, they kidnap the Chosen children. Agumon turns to a human child - Ryou Akiyama - as he needs a human to evolve. So, Ryou on his own has to fight through the villains of Digimon Adventure to free the chosen children. He is not a Chosen Child himself, though, being made to borrow Taichi's Digivice.
Now, this game is clearly not canon - the villains being brought back is never mentioned again, and it is explicitly said that spring 2000 was the first time that the Chosen Children returned back to the Digital World after their original adventure.
Other than that... I kinda love how vile the villains are in this game. I really adore it. But yeah, definitely not canon.
Tag Tamers
Tag Tamers starts during the events of the second movie. Diaboromon is defeated and just as this happens, Ryou and Ken get contacted by V-mon and Piccolomon. Millenniumon is back, and it is up to Ryou to defeat it. This time he has to partner up with V-mon, who is already destined to be Daisuke's partner. So Ryou and Ken go visit the digital world together - only to find out, that it was all a trap set up by Millenniumon to lure Ryou back.
This game at once is the one most directly referenced in the Show (with Ken's flashback to getting infected with the Dark Spore) and also the more most directly contradicted by the show. Because while the game takes place in March 2000, the series explicitly names the time of Ken and hence Ryou travelling to the digital world as August 2000, exactly a year post-Adventure. More interestingly we do not see any partner with Ryou in the flashback either, and it is pretty clear that if V-mon ever met Ken or Ryou before, he does most certainly not remember.
It should also be noted that in this game Ken and Ryou both get D-3 Digivices, while in the primary canon Ken obviously received a normal Digivice at this point, that only later turned into the D-3 at the Dark Ocean.
D-1 Tamers
D-1 Tamers takes place not too long after Tag Tamers. While watching over Ken, who is sick from the Dark Spore, Ryou finds an online quiz about Digimon and upon answering it gets once more summoned to the Digital World. Here, he is made to participate in the D-1 Tournament against other Children and their Digimon partners, including both characters from the anime and some original characters. However, soon enough it turns out, that the tournament was just something created by the Holy Beasts to train Ryou up to once more fight against Millenniumon.
Basically, the same from before applies. The kids in this game all have D-3 Digivices, that did not yet exist in this universe. Nowhere in canon is it ever mentioned that Taichi and Co. have travelled back to the Digital World at this point - and mind you, the entire thing with the Holy Beasts also does not make a whole lot of sense considering the canon of the show (with the Holy Beasts just being brought back).
As someone who tends to latch onto minor characters very easily, I loved the original characters in this game, even though they have very few lines.
Mind you, if you have been in Digimon fandom spaces for a longer time, you might have come across the picture underneath before and thought to yourself: "Oh, this looks official." However... It is actually Fanart. To be exact this picture seems to originate with a fan-book on the games called Digimon Crusader. (I have been trying to get my hands on that one before. But I have only seen it two times up for auction and never could get manage to set up a proxy in time - as the sellers were never shipping to Europe.)
This is the book by the way:
Brave Tamer
Lastly there is Brave Tamer, a game that is rather hard to describe, because it involves a ton of time travel. Hurray, because this plot was not already convoluted enough. lol
Basically, it starts with Ryou at the very beginning of the Digital World, meeting Monodramon and then timehopping a whole lot to help both the Chosen Children and Tamers (who also show up here, because the game released by the time Tamers was out), and also get some closure. Please note, at this point in time the digital world has fucked up Ryou's mental health for good. lol
The game ends with Monodramon forcing a fusion between himself and Millenniumon, defeating the villain like this and leaving Ryou out of time with a single Digitama.
The plot of this game, due to the time travel, is a whole mess. I adore the game for the worldbuilding it does for the Adventure digital world, even though this, too, is doubtful in terms of canonicity. There is no real harm to take this as canon for the Adventure-world, though obviously the show itself contradicts this in terms of canon for the Tamers-world.
The crossover stuff between Tamers and Adventure verse is also very confusing to say the least. But yeah, given that none of the interactions here ever get referenced anywhere: This is also very certainly not canon. (Also, for some reason Ryou aged 2 years between D-1 Tamers and Brave Tamer, even though Brave Tamer starts up very shortly after D-1 Tamers ends.)
So, what is canon?
All of this might leave you wondering: What is canon for Ryou? Well, it is kinda hard to say. What we can assume is something like this:
In the universe of Digimon Adventure there is or was a boy named Akiyama Ryou. We do not know a whole lot about him, but based on his design he was probably 10 or 11 years old in August of 2000. When Ken first got called into the Digital World, he met Ryou there, and the two of them defeated Millenniumon, getting Ken infected with the Dark Spore. We do not know what happened to Ryou after this, but it seems unlikely that he and Ken stayed in contact, given Ken never brings him up. It is not impossible that he has died, though this is never confirmed, or contradicted by the canon.
In the universe of Digimon Tamers, there also exists a boy named Akiyama Ryou. Other than the boy from the games, he is not from Tokyo, but from a fishing village near Kitakyushu. We do not know whether he has a mother, but he has a father, as well as an uncle who lives in Tokyo. Whenever Ryou participated in the Digimon tournaments, he stayed with his uncle, apparently. In December 2000, Ryou meets Cyberdramon in Tokyo, and realized that Cyberdramon cannot stay in the real world because it is too aggressive. So he decides to travel to the Digital World together with it. Now, technically you can argue whether Cyberdramon is the Digimon resulting from the fusion of Monodramon and Millenniumon, but Ryou is very much a different character with a different backstory.
(And mind you: No, that US Comic that marries the Digimon Tamers story with some of the game story, is very much not canon, like all US-only material.)

@digi-noir mentioned you on a post “I’m right and I’ll keep saying it Side note: I...”:
@bossarmadimon Mayhaps I don’t remember my Adventure lore correctly but I don’t remember it contradicting any timeline stuff? Causes a lot of questions and inconsistencies yeah, but I can’t think of any specific timeline stuff. Can you elaborate more?
I'm not particularly knowledgeable on this, but @shihalyfie is, and I'll quote her on the WonderSwan Games that are the source of the problems: "Tag Tamers…doesn’t make sense with the anime, and despite what a lot of people like to claim about it being “necessary” to understand what was going on with Ken, it actually makes it even more confusing"

Alright folks.
Whenever Ni says "Ryo" without the "u" at the end, she's talking about Akiyama Ryo. Because this is how i used to call him and i feel like not changing it.
HOWEVER
Whenever Ni says "Ryou" with the "u" at the end, she's talking about Digimon Survive's Ryou. Because i feel like this to not mistake him with the "dude whose once was voiced by Kanemaru Jun-ichi in a digimon series."
This is only valid for me.

PSA TO NON ROLEPLAY BLOGS
Please do not reblog my posts. This is a roleplay blog and having my rp’s or headcanon posts spread around is really frustrating. It super messes up my activity and it’s really disheartening to see a notification and realize it’s not an ask or an rp reply. Those posts are not for you, and it’s stated in my rules that I block non-rp blogs on sight.
To-Do List:
Drafts ( 22 ) / Inbox ( 24 ) / Queue ( 4 )
Other Blogs:
Mike Total Drama
Rules + Muse List below The Cut!
1.) Fandoms
My blog is, as a rule, not affiliated with any of the fandoms that my muses come from, and are largely products of my own headcanons, I'll list on the muse page which muses are fully canon divergent and which ones follow canon, as it can vary depending on how I feel about the media they come from.
2.) Basic RP Etiquette
Don't control or override the actions of my characters, don't kill them without asking, no forcibly shipping with my character without talking to me first, really basic stuff for everyone's comfort, really.
3.) NSFW
I generally don't like NSFW unless we're very close rp partners, and if we do engage in that kind of shipping it will lead directly to fade to black, I don't have a sinblog, and don't have an interest in one, so any smut will have to be implied at best. Otherwise, darker subject matter like gore and other darker themes involving mental health will be explored and tagged appropriately.
4.) Dropping Threads
I'm guilty of dropping threads when I lose my muse for them and get overwhelmed. I'm working on reaching out more and sending memes to my mutuals, but I'm a very shy person. The best way to start things with me is to approach me in DM's or send me a meme.

The Thing About The Age of the Characters in Digimon
Okay, let me talk about one thing in the western Digimon Fandom, that has always bothered me. And it has to do with something very weird: The age of the characters in the first four seasons.
See, in a lot of western fandom discourse there is this idea that the main characters in Tamers are 1 year younger than the characters in Adventure, 02, and Frontier. This mostly originates with one thing: The Japanese dub of the other three seasons do not give any age for the characters, as they introduce themselves saying just their grade in primary school. Tamers meanwhile gives official ages for the characters (with pretty much everyone but Shaochung and Ryou being 10). While the western versions of the other seasons gave an age for the main characters, making the Goggle Boys 11 years in their respective seasons.
However... This does not make them a year older.
See, most of the main characters in the first four seasons of Digimon are 5th graders. This maintains to Taichi, Sora and Yamato in Adventure, to Daisuke, Hikari, Takeru and Ken in 02, the entire main cast in Tamers, and Takuya, Izumi, Kouichi and Kouji in Frontier.
What does this mean for age? Well, basically it means that these characters should have been 10 by the 1st of April of the year that they entered 5th grade. To be exact, it means the birthdays should be like this:
Taichi, Yamato, Sora: Between April 1st 1988, and March 31st 1989 (through Sora's birthday being recent in movie 2, which takes place during spring vacation, we can assume her birthday is in March 1989)
Koushirou, Mimi: Between April 1st 1989, and March 31st 1990
Jyou: Between April 1st 1987 and March 31st 1988
Takeru, Hikari, Daisuke, Ken: Between April 1st 1991 and March 31st 1992
Iori: Between April 1st 1993 and March 31st 1994
Miyako: May 21st to about June 21st 1990 (we know her star sign is Gemini)
Takato, Jianliang, Ruki, Hirokazu, Kenta, Iori: Between April 1st 1990 and March 31st 1991 (this should also be true for Junpei in Frontier)
Shaochung: Between April 1st 1993 and March 31st 1994
Ryou (Tamers Version): Between April 1st 1986 and March 31st 1987
Takuya, Izumi, Kouichi, Kouji: Between April 1st 1991 and March 31st 1992
Tomoki: Between April 1st 1994 and March 31st 1995
And yes, if you have autistic knowledge of this franchise, you will know that there is in some cases stuff that does not make sense.
Notably the fact that within the old Artbook with the character reference pictures 02 Sora is referenced to be 14 years old. However, that book has been released years later, and the information came from Seki Hiromi, so I am fairly certain this is just her not quite realizing that Sora's birthday is somewhat confirmed to be in March through movie 2. (The same is also true for Ruki, who also has her birthday in movie 6, which also takes place during the spring vacation. However, other than with movie 2, which is confirmed as canon for the series through 02, the canonicity of movie 6 is a lot more doubtful, as there are several ways in which it contradicts the canon of the show.)
The other thing is one very specific for Tamers.
See, Tamers is unique in giving the ages of the characters. And in fact with every screenplay of the series (which have been digitally distributed and are most available and actually super interesting for some background information) in the list of characters showing up in that episode most ages are given. This is why we know the ages of the parents in Tamers. However: Tamers takes place over the time between April 2001 and late February or early March 2002, so over the course of a roughly year. And even in the last episodes the ages for all characters are still the same as by episode 1. However, I assume this is just simply an oversight, that nobody has thought about. At least this is a lot more likely than none of the main characters (including the adults) having had their birthday before March. lol
So yeah. Generally speaking: All four goggle boys are 10 or 11 in their respective season. 5th graders at the very least.

Yakkid - Akiyama Ryouga
The younger Akiyama twin. Eighth and last in the poly-verse.
Analytical, studious, and hard working. He somehow took a hard left away from the rest of the Akiyama's more relaxed personalities.
He has one hell of an ego, but does everything he can to back it up. He won’t just say he’s the best, he’ll prove it, and works very hard to hold onto that standard. He puts a lot of pressure on himself to perform at peak at all times.
Prefers dance over any other form of fitness. He's especially talented at ballet. When he feels himself getting burnt out mentally, he'll spend a few days in the studio working through it physically.
He acts like he hates it but he actually appreciates his family dragging him away from things to take a moment to relax. They found a balance that works for everyone.
He absolutely adores any and all animals, from a distance, given they all hate him. He's never figured out why, they just immediately are stand offish at best. He's been scratched/bitten more than once.
January 11th, 11:56, birthday
Typical twin pregnancy, except in an unusual turn, they were 8 days late. Kimi insists it's because they inherited Akiyama's lazy streak. Like she isn't just as bad.
He knew he wanted to do something with math, and money, like his father. Eventually settled on being a financial advisor and investor.
Trauma for Flavor : Ryou ends up having a substance abuse problem through highschool. Mostly to help with his studies/extracurriculars/etc. It takes time but the family rallies around him to help him recover.
#yakkimi#yakkids#AkiMi#Akiyama Ryouga#also jokingly called kid seven point five#the last of the kids that 4 way tied XD#from here I'll just do the rest in whatever order

WIP Wednesday, except I was having writer's block so it's WIP Friday
Another excerpt from the Iron Chef Sengoku universe, starring OFC Maki and Shingen. I've written 2000 words of this in the last two days because Min Rei on the Ikemen discord responded to my pleas for help and successfully talked me out of my own head.
“Ahhhh.” Shingen’s expression was unreadable. Something about it reminded her of their first meeting, when she had so innocently asked if he had children.
“It’s important to me that my partner love Aoi for herself, not because she fills in a spot on someone’s family tree.” Maki shook her head, remembering Ryou’s disappointment that their beautiful daughter wasn’t a handsome son. “And . . . “
When she didn’t continue, Shingen leaned forward and let his knee nudge hers. “And?”
She took a deep breath but didn’t shift away from him. “And. I would hope my partner felt the same way about me.” She stared into her tea, unable to meet his eyes. “Happy to be with me because of who I am, not just a pretty escort at work parties and provider of heirs.”
Shingen was silent. His knee still rested against her, providing an anchoring warmth. “You sound like you’ve been down that path before.”
“Ryou – my ex-husband – it wasn’t until Aoi was born that I realised he saw me that way.” She drained the tea and set the cup down before folding her hands in her lap. “He was so angry that she wasn’t a boy. And then angry that I wasn’t ready to try again yet.” Maki’s cheeks burned at the memory of the disdain he’d had for her pride and joy, and the fights in that first year of Aoi’s life. “He wanted to get pregnant again right away, and I –” She realised she was about to make a frank confession about her sex life to a near-stranger, and stuttered to a stop.
“Akiyama-san?”
She looked up, finally, to meet Shingen’s eyes, and smiled ruefully. “I don’t know why I’m telling you such personal things.”
