this is a story about many stories. you would be forgiven for thinking it an anthology, one which moves from one tale to the next with identifiable delineations in between, the usual deaths and births and corresponding blank pages to mark them, but this is not quite that sort of chronicle. the story i am about to tell you is one that overlaps, one that has been written from one pot of ink onto the same few scraps of paper. if you lift each page to the light, you will see the overlay of the dozens who have come before whispering in faded ink: ghosts in the margins. this story, as you must understand, is a palimpsest. i cannot tell you about her without speaking of everyone who came before.

it begins with someone very far away, an ancestor very distant and yet not so remote to be the very first man. he was a sahin, as she is a sahin, and he lived in the cove, as she lives in the cove. yet the one we know now sits on great wealth, and this man has been dirt and rock to lay upon. but as the tale-tellers would tell it, he is clever as a fox and just as willing to dig in the mud to find his meal. clever and foxlike enough, they say, not to care what bones he unearths in the process. smart and beastial enough to do what must be done to ascertain a future. what is known for certain is this: one day the sahin family line has no hope, the next it prospers. what can be said of the dates is that they are coincidental at best, damning at worst: this change occurs on the meridian line of the cove's great shipwreck. it is never proven, ne'er so much as confirmed by the breath of a dying man, but still there are whispers of men who stood out on the cliffs, hanging a great lantern from a tall distance, calling a ship to its fatal end so as to gut and skin it. profit born from death.

so that man from very far away, he grows very rich very suddenly, and from the seed of business he plants grows the sahin empire. their profit tangles inevitably with the sleepy town of kilmer cove, twisting until they stand as a pillar of the very community, but so too does tragedy braid itself into the family line like supporting beams. inexplicable deaths and strange misfortunes plague the sahin family generation by generation, and amongst the townsfolk comes the word curse. cursed they are, each and every one of them, for the acts of their ancestor.

in all the time that passes the world grows more modern, and perhaps less superstitious, but no less strange. there seems a time where curses and sea-doom has been outgrown or at least cast off, shed like the worn shingles of an aged house, but the curse in our blood always comes back. safiye sahin-van ness is a woman of untenable loveliness. though she passes before her granddaughter may meet her, it's said they bare an eerie resemblance to one another: a thing vedia may only gauge from old photographs and the haunted look upon her father's face. but safiye, beloved as she is, meets an early and tragic death like so many come before her. held by a mental health condition that would never fully relent no matter what treatment was provided, safiye would come to believe she was a kelpie being forcedly kept from her home in the sea — a idea no doubt acquired from the town's oft-discussed dark lore. in a fit of delusion, she sought to return to the saltwater: and in pitching herself from the cliffs, met a final end. in the sahin-van ness household, who blame the townsfolk's gossip for the ideation fixed in safiye's head, talk of the curse and all local legends are banished.

in vedia's birth, the world alters its very material. everything becomes silk and satin. paranoid for the safety of his child, the sahin-van ness patriarch keeps his daughter swaddled at all times, and ensures that which she comes into contact with shows only its soft underbelly. weaned on the milk and honey of the world, the girl grows to be as she is fed, soft and heavily sweetened. how could it be any other way, when she's been shown no salt, no fat? undoubtedly spoiled, indefensibly selfish, she is also a delight incarnate: a heady mix of charm and beauty, naïvete and genuine warmth, that can only be bred under the proper circumstances. perhaps it is this tincture of soul that sees her so beloved, or perhaps this love the town shows her is built from fear, the wariness that without protection, she will be dragged under by the same dark force that stole those innocents that came before. a preeminent darling. a doomed daughter.

the township releases its breath as she grows, drawing finally into the shape of a woman: this, surely, is a good sign. but fate likes to strike at the weak places, the liminal spots of the body, the space between exhale and the very next inhale. drawn to the glamour of the thespian, vedia debuts at the playhouse: a talented little ingenue, all agree. compelling and convincing in equal turns, masqueraded from one role to the next, too skilled for their little stage. yet it is not until her first tragic role that the audience goes still — her performance so real, so terribly raw, that they can feel the scratch of pain in their own throats. for one long minute the room stays silent, no sound to be heard but the clenching of jaws. the applause, then, is ravenous. a great beast rising up and over her heard. the girl in the spotlight blinks as if stunned, as if forgetting where she finds herself — who she finds herself situated within. then in a moment she is back, great doe eyes blinking coyly at that array of hands, the scent of honey filling the room once more. yet as this great talent persists across more shows, growing more consuming with each tragedian role — from shakespeare to chekhov, tennessee williams to arthur miller — so too do the rumours. no mortal thing, this talent of hers. too strange, too overlarge. this unnerving ability is a portent, an omen, a sign: the curse is back. and it possesses vedia's thick-beating heart.

SPARKNOTES .

vedia is the daughter of the sahin-van ness family, one of the wealthiest & oldest families in town. though well-respected, local rumour is that the family is cursed due to their ancestor's terrible act -- allegedly purposefully causing the infamous kilmer cove shipwreck which resulted in many deaths. the family has had many great tragedies over the years, including several early deaths; most notably among them vedia's grandmother (who she's said to very closely physically resemble), who had a delusive disorder which saw her believing she was a kelpie. in an episode she throws herself off the cliffs to "return" to the sea, resulting in her death. due to her father's belief in the family curse, vedia is coddled and closely protected as a child by himself and those around her. consequently she becomes a darling of the town, an unofficial princess. long thought to have been swaddled enough to avoid the family doom, lately there is talk that the curse has reached vedia, due to her performances at the playhouse — her tragedies on stage seem so real, so genuine and heartbreaking, that it can only be the mark of some kind of haunting.

HEADCANONS :

per this quote, vedia has something of a classic transatlantic accent, as does the rest of her family.

vedia sleepwalks something terrible, a challenge she's dealt with since childhood. generally this only occurs within the house, but there have been a handful of occasions she's been found in her nightgown in town.

while she is genetically only a sahin, the hyphenated surname van ness comes from a second/late in life marriage three generations ago. at the time it was a big deal, as the van ness family (and their fortune) predates even the sahin's, and the merging was the cause for great celebration. while the marriage never bore any children, the surnames have remained hyphenated, and children in the family are given a middle name from one of the van ness ancestors.

the sahin-van ness's have a storied history of getting their dogs from the same breeder one town over, and have also had teddy's mother, grandfather, and various other ancestors in the house.

she wears a locket baring a figure vedia has yet to identify, but is actually melpomene - the greek muse of tragedy. she borrowed stole this locket from a box in her father's room. it belonged to her grandmother - the one she supposedly bares a great image too. he does not know she has it, and she takes great pains to hide it from him. is vedia possessed by the spirit of melpomene .... has she made a deal w her .... whose to say !

she knows far more about the world and the "curse" than she lets on :) the charade is upkept for the benefit of others, most especially her father

as could be expected, vedia's family live in their ancestral home, by now a couple hundred years old. why yes it is on top of a hill, however did you guess? why yes there is decay below the opulence, wood rotted by seaspray, a view of the cliffs...

I AM NO BIRD . tourist or out of towner. an individual who has come from outside of kilmer cove, and bonded with vedia. perhaps they're still dazzled, but they witness her without the mirage of fog that is applied by those steeped in the kilmer cove lore: and they can see clearly that the bog of this place and this mythology is not mystic, but it is dooming her all the same. she should leave and start anew elsewhere, and they don't understand why she won't do just that — so they intend to convince her of as much, or perhaps take her with them when they leave.

WE CAN NEVER GO BACK AGAIN . an longterm crush of vedia's that's likely unattainable, be it because of age or relationship status or some other quality. they have to her over the years evolved beyond a person and become more of an idea or ideal, and she's never been able to let this affection go. / ALTERNATIVELY, this can be done the opposite, with someone harbouring this sort of crush on her.

I WALK ENCHANTED . an individual who become particularly stunned by her performances at the playhouse, and has since been sure to attend every one. they have the desire to get to know her, but her status has kept them shyly afar. pls come give her a rose at the stage door she'll promptly fall in love (for at least a week)

MallCop HM 2023 Harriota AU

This is an idea that me and @youngstarfishphilosopher were talking about so here's the idea so far...

-William Gracey and Allistair Crump are both rival store owners in New Orleans in this AU. I think Gracey's store would be called The Haunted Mansion Store and would sell themed products, with local legend Constance Hatchaway being a large part of it (she's pretty much the store's mascot). Crump's store would be called Hatbox Supply or something, which earns him the nickname Hattie by the townsfolk.

- Gracey's store is a lot more successful than Crump's because Gracey is just a better businessman in general, so Crump ends up trying to sabatoge the store a lot. Crump ends up paying Kent Owens, the now middle-aged, broke, estranged son of the local priest, to help him steal stuff and sabatoge the store.

- In order to combat the thieves, the rich Gracey ends up hiring Harriet Lee and Leota Curtis (yes I'm giving them both Jamie Lee Curtis references for last names, be quiet) to be the security guards. Leota is something of a local legend, retired cop and town hero, and is a MASSIVE inspiration to Harriet, aka the reason why she tried to join the police force in her 20's. She didn't pass at the academy, however, and ended up working in security.

- Ben Matthias and his adoptive father Bruce Matthias are 2 store regulars, and close friends of Harriet. Ben's wife recently died, which caused him to quit his job, so Bruce ends up spending a lot of time trying to get Ben to apply at Haunted Mansion so he can begin living a normal life again (and also stop living with Bruce, because Bruce works as a professor and can barely afford to feed himself, let alone a depressed Ben).

- Gabbie and Travis Hauss (get it because in the movie they owned the house so their last name is Hauss) are 2 other store regulars, and family friends of Gracey's. Ben is broke as hell and can't cover all his groceries when Bruce sends him out, so Gabbie helps cover some of his stuff because she's rich and nice, which is how they meet.

- Ben catches Kent screwing with the shelves and ends up calling security (Leota) on him, but when Leota starts getting really mean towards him for being, like, an idiot and a failure for being unemployed and essentially disowned by his dad (cuz yk Leota is friends with Kent's dad and also in on all the town drama), Ben steps in and defends him (cuz even though he's trying to sabatoge the place, Kent is really really bad at causing any real trouble, and he wasn't stealing stuff either, and Ben takes pity). Ben tries to clarify that he doesn't really like Kent, but Ben got him off the hook, so Kent has decided they're friends now. There is no escaping him.

- Now that Kent has chilled out, he and Ben make a promise to each other to go job hunting and get their lives back together. Crump gets really pissed that he lost Kent as a pawn and starts actually causing damage to the building.

- Long story short, the whole thing turns into an investigation (that the actual police won't touch since there's no evidence), so Leota and Harriet become an unofficial cop duo and start collecting evidence to prosecute Crump for the various crimes he's trying to commit in order to shut down The Haunted Mansion Store.

This is just a basic outline of the story, I might polish this and turn it into an actual thing later but uhh yeah :D (also yes ofc there's background Ben x Kent how could I resist...)

harry wanted to make this brand seem like it was bigger than him, and was an actual real brand, not just a celebrity off shoot brand. but it turns out people don't care as much if he doesn't seem involved, in fact all their conspiracies are that he isn't involved in order to justify why it's such a shit show of bad quality and greed and zionism.

saw a post on linkedin about resume tips for people who aren't having any luck. fairly common list of things that "the experts" say, including "you should change your resume for every job you apply to, customize it for the position". made me very mad! started writing a comment then kinda went off the rails so i decided NOT to post it but imma post my rant here ha ha

Many of these points are helpful, but one thing that I see recommended to stressed out, broke job-searchers (usually unemployed folks just trying desperately to make ends meet), is to tailor the resume for each job. Now, a cover letter I can understand, and I agree that it’s super important to write a custom cover letter that makes the company feel special and calls out the applicant’s unique fit for the role. But telling folks to make a new resume for every job we apply to is so out of touch. Maybe you’re thinking, oh, how many different types of jobs are out there? How difficult can it be? Just read the job description closely, research the organization, take a couple minutes to practice your breathing exercises because they’re asking for someone to do what really should be three people’s work for what is not even considered a living wage in most cities and you still can’t even get a job and the search feels endless and hopeless and you’re having an existential crisis, then connect which parts of the job description you want to highlight in your application, then figure out which parts of your meticulously crafted resume you need to take out to make it fit and not be really long, and so on.

Well, as someone who’s been on the hunt for almost as much time as I’ve spent employed (three layoffs at inopportune times), I can tell you that every position (based on the job description) is a little different. There aren’t like, a handful of archetypes I can make a handful of resume versions for. The amount of consideration and time that goes into a resume PLUS a cover letter makes this advice unrealistic. We are out here applying to literally hundreds of jobs. We are qualified and could totally do all of them! The truth is, the folks hiring have hundreds of applicants and can be extremely selective, rejecting people for even the slightest thing. The truth is it’s out of our control, as applicants. All I can do is find positions that I’m qualified for, and put in a reasonable amount of time and effort in. Every job I apply to, I have probably less than a 1 in 500 chance at, often 1 in 1,000. Maybe folks in hiring should be asking themselves questions like, is this really a helpful indicator for the applicant’s fit for the role, or are we making irrelevant hoops for people to jump through? Are these hoops creating barriers for qualified candidates? Is this elimination process discriminatory and further replicating marginalization for already marginalized people? Have you considered that applicants are doing enough already, and blaming us for our struggles is incredibly out of touch and cruel?

is my resume perfect? no. is my cover letter perfect? no. my portfolio? not perfect! but are these JOBS perfect?? are they hiring me for perfection? are they offering perfection pay? are the companies even REMOTELY even just competent??? why do they expect such perfection from applicants who have to do hundreds of applications. they’re not special. i’m not special. i just want enough money to survive PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

you know. this was a joke post. but I think I accidentally understood something about the book's relationship to virginity just now?

Because see Valjean, Javert, Enjolras and Fantine all died virgins (in the case of Fantine this is what Hugo says in the actual book so the virginity aspect is more metaphor in her case but anyway) and they ALL were social outsiders. Valjean becoming a convicted criminal and fugitive, Javert being born an outsider, Enjolras's own self-banishing from participating in regular society (aka the company of women, but also sentencing himself to death for participating in the violent uprising that will lead to the end of the need for violent uprisings), and Fantine not only being born extremely poor but getting a glimpse of social acceptability as a grisette and then becoming an unwed single mom, indebted, unemployed and then finally a street prostitute (which doesn't give you the status that a courtesan maybe could get).

All of the 'outsiders' have the choice to protect and uphold the institutions that made them outsiders, or attempt to undermine them. Rebel, as Javert calls it. But the key factor is that they're not allowed to participate in them. It's not really so much of a volunteering as much as it is a leash that keeps them from rebeling against the institution of marriage.

So like. Virginity is not here an individual choice, maybe someone just doesn't feel like doing it, but a social phenomenon. You can't participate in proper marriage so you can either be a virgin forever or refuse traditional marriage and fuck out wedlock. i wouldn’t call seclusion prison, bc i’m pretty sure at least half the reason he was in seclusion after was to rest and heal up from the whipping, but yeah. high likelihood he wasn’t taking care of lsz during that time. i also disagree that lwj could be considered lsz’s parent, i think it was more likely lsz was raised communally as an orphan of the war. definitely agree that he puts out unemployed vibes lol. and that his little widower shtick was pathetic. also my hc for why jc’s got ‘hasn’t slept properly in 13 years’ energy is bc he remembers what happened the last time he slept in (wwx went and crashed a banquet to steal away the wens) and now he refuses to sleep more than necessary.

yeah i considered shen jiu when i was thinking about the top contender but ultimately for me he xuan wins out bc he would actually literally eat the rich and i think that’s funny. i hadn’t considered xue yang though, really the only thing that happened to him bc of the rich was getting his pinky obliterated. which was somewhat minor imo considering the other chars. plus he paid it back tenfold and was pretty happy with himself.

lando's said himself the move to monaco is partly for financial reasons:

So I saw this this morning, and I would assume this is the article he was wanting to get out ahead of, but boy that quote is...not good. Buckle up for a rant (not aimed at you anon, just the situation in general).

The crux of his argument there is essentially “I need to avoid paying tax, because if I don’t, I might not have much to live off if this all goes wrong for me” aka ‘I might have to slum it like a normal’.

Lando’s tax bracket would presumably be 45%, his earnings in the multi millions. Even paying the full amount, he’s taking home more yearly than some people could dream of earning in a life time. If he had to stop racing tomorrow, he would have enough to live comfortably, and that’s before you take into account his family wealth.

Look, tax avoidance (or ‘tax management’, as rich people like to call it to feel less guilty about it) is a rich man’s game. It’s privilege and entitlement and greed all rolled into one. It’s played on other people’s dime and 99% of the time, the burden of people choosing not to pay their tax is redistributed on to people who can’t afford to pay theirs. Don’t kid yourself that every person struggling to get by is unemployed/on the dole. Plenty of them are earning, paying taxes and have no option to stop. They’re not rich enough to indulge in schemes to protect their earnings. If they stop, they end up in jail. Someone paying 20% tax is still taking home small change in comparison to someone in the top tier.

Sure, tax avoidance is legal, but it’s absolutely not ethical. ‘Everybody’s doing it’ doesn’t make it right or okay and I think we can all do better than applauding it, especially when people like us are the ones who bear the brunt of its effects. It’s crappy, privileged behaviour. It doesn’t have to alter how much you support someone, or be the linchpin in whether you continue. It doesn’t even have to be something you even think about all that often, or a drum to bang constantly as a point of detraction, but I think it’s absolutely okay to call it out for what it is when relevant.

Lewis gets enough flak for it constantly, even when it’s not relevant, so I think even just for balance purposes, all the time that’s still happening it’s important Lando/George/Alex etc DO get some flak for it, just so they’re all getting the same energy.

Dear minor regional civil servants with unusual names, I hope you realise how much you are appreciated by the social historians who one day are going to hunt you down and put you in their dissertation.

Okay, context: so the second English trans guy I know of who got his birth certificate changed (and the first who publicly wrote about it) was, by his own account, chronically depressed and unable to hold down a job for most of his pre-transition life. In 1944* a disability like that made it incredibly difficult to get any kind of legal gender recognition at all, let alone the holy grail of a corrected birth certificate. And this guy was not rich and famous. Working-class kid from a town near Liverpool, left school at 13, kind of wandered around a lot, not at all the kind of person who could flash around a bunch of cash to get a registrar to look the other way. So I’ve been trying to figure out, bluntly, how on earth he managed to pull it off.

ANYWAY, here’s where the unusual names come in: the superintendent registrar who signed off on his new male name and birth designation was called L.M. Worgan. As he’s apparently the only L.M. Worgan who has ever existed, I was able to track the guy’s career through a bunch of local newspaper articles and learned that Worgan was, in 1944, not just the registrar but also the chief Public Assistance Officer--aka the man who ran the local welfare office, with which our chronically-depressed-and-unemployed trans hero was intimately acquainted.** And Worgan seems to have been a decent welfare officer overall. Shows up in the papers a lot for fighting a stingy council over food and housing shortages etc. Non-transphobic enough, at any rate, to preside over the trans guy’s eventual marriage to a woman. Which suggests to me that for once a public servant looked at a man who was obviously, debilitatingly unhappy and instead of telling him to hike up his skirts and get a proper job thought well hmm, maybe the whole having-to-pretend-to-be-a-woman thing might be contributing to the obvious debilitating unhappiness; lets see if we can fix that for a start. 

Moral of the story is, if you have a weird name please go into the civil service and be decent to people. History will vindicate you.

I just saw the embargo ask and like. That isn't even on James. The Embargo stops the dust from leaving Atlas and its territories (aka Mantle). If dust shortages were caused by the embargo, we would see it in Mystral, Vacuo and Vale, not in Atlas. The dust shortages in Atlas and Mantle would be caused by Jauques pulling them from the supply chain in a protest against the embargo. The Embargo would have a large impact on the world of Remnant, yes, but the writers are not competent enough to show it properly. If they wanted it to originally be a flaw of James', it would have been shown as such in the previous Arc, when the gang were in Mystral. Not when they are in Mantle and Atlas, because then the effect is more so caused by Jaques. (Yes, some of it could be due to profit lost without the markets, but also they should have been able to set up to be self sufficient if the writers have any clue as to what a magi-tech city state should look like. Atlas should have been Solarpunk Art Deco, showing off how they can grow food in the dead of thw North Fucking Pole and I will die mad)

That is actually a very good point! It really should have come up in earlier volumes with the huntsmen complaining about not being able to get much needed dust because of the embargo but in the show the only people complaining are Mantel and Atlas citizens not anyone who should also be realistically affected by it. Which is....interesting. This should read as spoiled rich people complaining about not being able to go out and vacation or something but instead it’s treated as it’s actively harming the kingdom. Atlas’s hurts is solely on Jacques, he’s the one shutting down factories and making people unemployed because he’s pissy he’s losing some of his billions in riches. But the show wants to beat down James and make us hate him so the show tries to tell us he’s the problem and not the actual problem Jacques in a weirdly pro capitalist propaganda that just flies over everyone’s heads it seems. Oh don’t get me started on how mad I am about Atlas and Mantel not being designed to their potential or shown off that will turn into a rant.
