The Arcana Drabbles: Storm Traditions

~ written for the @vesuviaweekly prompt "snuggle weather" - enjoy some found family platonic fluff! ~

"Watching the storm?"

The change in view is drastic enough to give you mild whiplash. Outside, torrents of rain are battering the cobblestones as the canal rushes by. Inside, Aisha is offering you a shawl to drape around your shoulders while Salim sets a fresh pot of tea next to the incense burner on the low table. She smiles as you accept the warmth.

"Asra was like that as a child, too. Always observing every new detail. We used to say that he would memorize the stars if he let him stay out late enough."

Salim laughs from the tea table. "Some things never change. Did you see him in the marketplace yesterday? I thought he was about to dismantle that poor new merchant's cart!"

You can't help but smile. Watching their family slowly knit back together has been a highlight of the last year. That said, this is perhaps the second or third time you've been with the older couple without Asra present, and you're a little unsure of where you fit in without that connection. There's a brief pause bordering on awkward where they share a look with each other before Salim breaks the silence.

"I'm so glad you decided to come over today and spend some time with us. Do you have a tradition of watching storms when they come in?"

You shrug. "I'm ... not sure. I might have picked that up from Asra when ... well, you know."

"Ah."

Another awkward pause. Salim scratches at his stubble sheepishly as Aisha gives him a look that says "seriously?". You pull the shawl tighter and scoot towards the tea table with a smile.

"It's okay, really. I don't mind talking about it."

"Oh, we shouldn't have brought it up -"

"In that case, where's your family?"

It's slightly hilarious to watch the breakdown in how synced they usually are. They both give each other wide-eyed "what was that??" looks, Salim absentmindedly passing you a cup of tea as Aisha sets a plate of treats down. You wrap your hands around the warm glass and shrug.

"I'm not sure. Asra knew about my aunt, but it's only been safe for him to tell me more about the past in the last year. Everyone else has been helping me search for clues - Nadia let me look at the city ledgers and census and Julian and Portia have been asking the ship crews that come in - but it's taking a while."

"If there's anything we can do -" Aisha begins,

"Yes! Anything at all -" Salim adds,

"Let us know."

You sip your tea and nod. "Thank you, I will."

"And ..." This time, it's Aisha who risks taking a relational step forward. "If you find yourself in need of a mother or father to talk to ..."

"Oh," Salim straightens, "Yes - not that we'd try to replace anybody -"

"- of course not." Aisha affirms. "But ... please, as much as you're comfortable with it. We'd love to be your family too."

You don't expect the sentiment to hit something so deep inside you, but it's hard not to tear up for a second. You nod.

"I'd like that. ... thank you."

They both light up. Aisha moves to a corner and picks out an old book from their shelf. "In that case, may we introduce you to one of our stormy weather traditions?"

Salim claps his hands, clearly caught up in the new idea. "I'll go get the powder!"

"What's the tradition?"

"May I join you?"

"Sure." You scoot to the middle of the couch. Aisha curls up next to you, tucking her feet in and showing you the cover of the elaborate story book in her lap.

"We used to do this whenever it rained. We'd all snuggle together under blankets and read stories, while we played with the pictures."

Salim reappears with a heavy quilt thrown over one shoulder and a pouch in his hand. He pulls out a pinch of sparkly powder and tosses it into the air before approaching the sofa. "May I?"

You nod and he sits down on your other side. The quilt gets spread across your laps and you find yourself cozily situated between two people absolutely delighted to dote on you.

"Now then," Aisha opens the book and passes it across your lap to Salim, "I think we should start with the one about the seesaw."

He adjusts his glasses and peers through them down at the page with a fond smile. "This one's a favorite. Ahem -"

Aisha raises her hand and the powder floating around the room seems to come alive with a subtle lavender glow. An image of a child and their parent appears, walking hand-in-hand across a grassy, hilly plain. Salim begins to read.

"Once upon a time, a giant built a playground for their little one. There was a slide, a swing set, a sand pit, and most importantly, a seesaw."

Above you, the images move and transform as the story unfolds. The storm lies forgotten behind you, Salim's voice drowning out the thunder, and Aisha's pictures lighting up the overcast room. The blanket and tea fill you with warmth. You fall into a drowsy, happy state, safe with the loving couple giving you a long-lost feeling of home.

Lt. Abubakar's sense of style draws heavily from Aisha Babayo Shehu's brand, Babayo, which embroiders Fulani cultural narratives onto modern designs. Her clothes are loose and comfortable. Triangles are often incorporated to reflect her Vulcan heritage. Kadiatou wears cowrie shell hair charms and bracelets.

Ens. Nako's sense of style consists of revealing, form-fitting tops and flowy, feminine accessories. She wears natural materials from her home planet, Oistir, such as woven algae, ocean crop, and carved seashell. Nako's school is identified culturally by their simply weaved beige crop and Utut recreates the practice for her own clothes.

do u have any opinions on the voidling designs from the new plot?

I have opinions on practically everything relating to neopets, lol

I don't hate them, but I definitely have critique for them. I think the main problems I have are that their poses are stiff (the 'neutral' poses in particular), and their faces feel flat in a way that feels unintentional- the line drawn above the bridge of the nose is used to imply depth, but if the mouth and nose are placed on the same plane as the eyes, the illusion of dimension doesn't work. The lines not having much variation in thickness also seriously contributes to the flat feeling.

did some rough sketches to illustrate how i'd personally tweak them- maybe i'll finish these later to take a stab at the line weights.

Conceptually, cat-based imps are a decent enough enemy type, but I do think that they're too close to wraiths visually. Not sure if they're planning on connecting these with those or not in the story, but as of right now they feel a bit redundant. It would maybe be fun to have more of the round shapes from the little floating molecules reflected in the designs, like if they were more liquid than gas? idk

ngl I'm still pissed off that the writers wrote Aisha out of the show because "there are no more storylines for her" but then added a million different characters (most of them underdeveloped and nowhere near as interesting as Aisha).

Yeah, same :/ she was literally my favorite character and the show just has never been the same without her. I know season 3 was their last youtube season so there could have been budget cuts or smth associated with why they cut her, but ultimately the reasons don’t really matter to me as much as the effect it had on the show. I know she wasn’t a “main” character but she was truly the beating heart of the show for me in so many ways. Johnny’s first real student after Miguel, Sam’s childhood best friend, close friend of Miguel and Tory. She connected and humanized a lot of the other characters, as well as just being her own standalone character who felt real and compelling. I miss her so much

Catching up. Flirting with Ryan and the Josh hate. Does that also come from the Family Fued episode. Because I completely forgot that was filmed in, May?? If they wanted to create buzz they could have had Tommy there instead of Josh. But they choose Josh. And good for him honestly. They must forget he's actually a real character that had a hate crime arc but that wouldn't surprise me.

Honestly, I think there's a chance it is about the family feud? Because obviously Bryan and Oliver like each other, and the Ryliver of it all was a lot. Also the way that the other team had 6 people, so if 911 really wanted, Lou could've been there. But he wasn't. Good for Bryan really, Josh is an important part of dispatch. I think people really don't appreciate the fact that we have more people on dispatch. Like, in lone star we only had Grace and now that Grace left, the dispatch scenes feel rough because we have no one else we are invested in there. Josh, Sue, Terry, Linda, they add a lot into making sure the dispatch scenes don't feel forced. And a lot of them admit to only having watched s7, so they probably really don't know about josh's backstory.

One underrated habit Aisha and Salim brought over from Zadith was water lanterns. Asra had completely forgotten about it until he saw them making some to celebrate together, and sending little flickering clay candles down the waterways on mini leaf-woven boats was the first time you really felt like part of their family.

How do you imagine the Winx Team B relationship between each other?

by winx b team do you mean tecna musa and aisha? bc they are super duper close lol

ill put a ~read more~ so i can ramble

musa and tecna are room mates and best friends. they frequently stay up way later than they meant to talking and tecna helps musa with her homework all the time. musa is really good at taking care of tecna when she has flare ups and keeping her up to date when she cant go out much. musa is great at getting the scoop from people and while tecna loves gossiping shes pretty bad at getting people to spill. tecna does not like riven from day one and tries to get musa to move on, but that girl is so stubborn. musa likes timmy in a little brother kind of way and they hang out together comfortably while tecna takes her iconic naps. tecna holds a grudge against riven for longer than either musa or timmy do (riven was pretty mean to timmy at first), the longest out of everyone probably, but eventually he does manage to redeem himself to her.

musa and aisha met in class when aisha was still using the psuedonymn "layla" and considered themselves friends but didnt really hang out much. musa was preoccupied by the fact that her crush started dating her ex and also theres shadow creatures on the loose or whatever. aisha felt bad about lying constantly and she was still shaken by her encounter with darkar, so she had a hard time making friends under her fake identity. musa was outgoing enough for them to connect despite that. once aisha joins the group she and musa become really close, and aisha basically spends all of season 2 secretly pining for her while she has her ups and downs with riven, and by season 3 they end up together! aisha marries nabu so he can be king and she moves to melody to live happily ever after with musa.

tecna and aisha are an interesting duo bc at first it seems like theyre only such close friends bc of musa, but actually they have a lot in common! both grew up pretty isolated; tecna with her health issues and aisha as a sheltered princess. while aisha is definitely extroverted and loves to dance and go out (once shes comfortable with the group), her social battery still drains much faster than musa's and she likes to spend time recharging by being wallflowers with tecna. i can imagine the two of them being movie buddies and aisha having a nerdy side that only really gets to shine when shes with tecna and timmy.

they are such a cute trio to me ^-^ musa and aisha definitely drag tecna out of her room to do stuff and get some vitamin d, but they also bring her places that she enjoys more than they door just hang out at home when shes not feeling up to it. tecna is new to having friends and having such an extroverted roommate was a blessing she didnt expect, and then adding aisha into the mix as someone a bit more level headed ensures that she can push her boundaries while not feeling like shes holding musa back or being pressured too much.
